And Old Trafford gives the traveling fan so many reasons to visit, too. It really is one of the iconic sporting venues in the world, with an even more iconic nickname: The Theatre of Dreams.

It’s known globally not only for its long history and status as one of the largest venues in English football, but also for the reverence of the home club. Manchester United, of course, is one of the most popular teams in the world, beloved by many (and hated by fans of rival clubs, of course).

For fans of the club and of soccer in general, a visit to Old Trafford can feel like a religious experience — and yet at the same time, surprisingly “normal” in relation to similar sports venues.

However you view Man United, it’s worth watching a match at Old Trafford at least once to get a sense of what makes supporters of the Red Devils, fans of English football in general and the city of Manchester tick.

Old Trafford isn’t just used by Manchester United, either. Occasional rugby matches and concerts are also held at the facility, and talk has persisted for years about major renovations.

Getting to Old Trafford

Old Trafford the stadium takes its name from Old Trafford the neighborhood — a municipal area just two miles southwest of Manchester’s city center. Several other landmarks, such as the nearby Old Trafford Cricket Ground, have the name, so know that it’s not just based on Manchester United’s ground.

However, if you tell a local — such as a cab driver — that you’re headed to “Old Trafford,” the association will usually be made that you’re on your way to watch football, especially if you’re from out of town and getting picked up at a hotel or train station.

Besides, from central Manchester, the ground is pretty simple to reach. For vehicles, the easiest route will be along the A56 (Chester Road), which cuts through the Old Trafford area and is lined with strip malls and industrial businesses. Note that on matchdays, the road becomes restricted to traffic the closer it gets to Warwick Road, which turns into Sir Matt Busby Way and leads north directly to the stadium.

The primary public transit option to Old Trafford is Manchester’s Metrolink light rail service, which has several stops within the city center, including at the Piccadilly and Victoria train stations. The Old Trafford stop is adjacent to the cricket ground, and you’ll have to walk about half a mile to get to the football stadium. However, it’s a lively one — more on that below.

Old Trafford is located next to railroad tracks for Britain’s rail network. There is a “Manchester United Football Ground” station along these tracks but it has not been open for matchday transport for several years.

Parking at Old Trafford

Old Trafford is surrounded by several “official” parking lots (or “car parks” in British nomenclature). The E1 and E2 lots are the most popular, as they are adjacent to the stadium’s main entrance on the east side.

Parking permits for Manchester United matches at Old Trafford can be purchased via the club’s website and begin at £12. If you’re set on driving to the match, buy a parking permit early, as these can be sold out months in advance.

Otherwise, you’ll find plenty of nearby businesses selling parking along Chester Road and other nearby streets, just like at most American sports venues.

Manchester hotels near Old Trafford

While there are several hotels, brand-name and otherwise, in the Old Trafford area — and, of course, many more in central Manchester — there’s one specifically worth seeking out if you’re a football fan: The Hotel Football, Old Trafford .

Owned by several former Man United players, the hotel is not only geared specifically for football fans (obviously) but it’s located just across the plaza from Old Trafford’s northeast corner. Things to do around old trafford.

Like many English football grounds, Old Trafford is nestled neatly into the neighborhood in which it’s located, co-existing among rows of houses, warehouses, car dealerships, grocery stores and other trappings of city life.

But on matchdays, the area comes alive with mobile vendors, musicians, food trucks and other types of entertainment to take advantage of the influx of people.

If you’re walking toward the stadium from the Old Trafford Metrolink station, you’ll see plenty of this, particularly after you cross the A56. The final walk on Matt Busby Way might be one of the most iconic for English fans, with the street teeming with people, the sidewalks lined with flags denoting food and souvenir stands, and the stadium visible in the distance.

Beyond this, there are a handful of neighborhood pubs around the Old Trafford area that cater to football fans. The nearest are The Bishop Blaize and The Trafford, both near the intersection of Chester and Warwick roads.

If you’re staying in Manchester’s center city, you’ll find football fans taking advantage of the numerous restaurant and pub options before making the trek to Old Trafford.

Another option for spending your pre-match time is visiting the National Football Museum , Britain’s shrine for the sport that’s located adjacent to Victoria Station.

But if you’re specifically interested in Manchester United’s history, you owe it to yourself to head to Old Trafford early to soak in the atmosphere before the match.

Watching a game at Old Trafford

Whether you’re a Manchester United fan or not, you should still spend some time exploring the perimeter of Old Trafford before going inside — partly to check out the vibrant scene, and partly to see the tributes to the club’s history.

The two most prominent nods are in the east plaza at the end of Sir Matt Busby Way. On the wall at the stadium’s southeast corner is the Munich Memorial, a tribute plaque to the players and club officials who died in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

Around the corner from here is the East stand, where you can find the most recognizable exterior view of Old Trafford — a glass façade with red “Manchester United” signage mounted above it. In the same plaza is the entrance to the United team store, as well as the “United Trinity” statue featuring three of the greats in club history, George Best, Denis Law and Bobby Charlton.

Entrance gates are available throughout the perimeter of Old Trafford, though tickets are marked with a specific gate — patrons should make sure to enter at the correct gate to be close to their designated seating area.

Like many English grounds, Old Trafford has four seating stands. The Sir Alex Ferguson stand on the north side, named after the club’s longtime manager who retired in 2013 is the largest in terms of capacity — if you’re a visitor trying to score a ticket for a single match, you’ll likely wind up sitting here.

The East stand is where the visiting club fans sit, confined to a few sections in the southeast corner. On the south end is the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, the only single-tiered stand.

Meanwhile, the Stretford End on the west side is the designated seating area at Old Trafford for United’s most fervent supporters. While it’s exceedingly difficult to score a ticket in that stand, it’s fun during matches to watch those hardcore fans in action from a distance.

Old Trafford has gone through many changes to its structure, seating bowl and appearance over its more than 100 years of existence, with more seemingly on the way . Expansion from its current 74,000-seat configuration is likely in coming years, particularly via expansion of the Sir Bobby Charlton stand — though it’s complicated by the below-street level train tracks just behind it as well as the fact that the club locker rooms and training facilities are located within.

One aspect of Old Trafford that allows it to keep a bit of an old-timey charm: There are no videoboards anywhere within the seating bowl. However, there are several small digital display boards in different spots around the ground to display time, score, player substitutions and so on.

Food and drink at Old Trafford

Unsurprisingly for an older ground, Old Trafford doesn’t have concourses to roam, so the food and drink available to you depends somewhat on your seating section. Plus, most in-stadium concession stands tend to have only 2-3 registers, so long queues can build up.

The fare at these stands are somewhat standard, with hot dogs and fries readily available. British fare like fish and chips and meat pies can also be found within.

If you care to eat something more substantial, or wish to have more variety, eat before going inside. The perimeter and surrounding blocks are lined with food stands and mobile trucks on matchdays, serving items ranging from chip stands (fries to Americans, but with a variety of toppings) to kebabs to burgers to pizza.

Manchester United recently earned raves for reducing beer prices at Old Trafford to as low as £3 a pint — the lowest in the Premier League.

How to get to Old Trafford Stadium

The closest train station to Old Trafford is Manchester Piccadilly , which is roughly 30 minutes away. The easiest way to get to the stadium from the station is on the blue Metro line to the Old Trafford stop, from which it’s just a short walk to the stadium.

There are free bicycle racks at Old Trafford if you want to cycle to the stadium. It’s also possible to drive, but bear in mind that the roads in the area get very busy on match days, so getting to Old Trafford is usually faster and less stressful when you take public transport.

What to do at Old Trafford Stadium

Old Trafford is the home of Manchester United Football Club and plays host to the club’s home games against both Premier League and UEFA Champions Cup teams. The stadium has also played host to an FA Cup final and semi-finals, as well as England games and the 2003 Champions League Final. It also hosts the annual rugby league Super League Grand Final - so even if you’re not a football fan, there’s still plenty of sporting events for you to enjoy at Old Trafford.

About Old Trafford Stadium

Old Trafford was officially opened on 19th February 1910 with a football match between Manchester United and Liverpool, with MUFC losing by one goal. The stadium was originally called United Football Ground but was renamed Old Trafford in 1936. Old Trafford was suffered from extensive bomb damage during World War Two, during which time the club shared premises with their rivals Manchester City.

With a capacity of 74,140 seats, the “Theatre of Dreams” as it’s known, is the largest club football stadium in the UK - and the second-largest stadium overall, behind Wembley in London. If you want to experience world-class football in a fantastic crowd, it’s easy to get to the nearest Old Trafford train station, Manchester Piccadilly, when you travel with Avanti West Coast.

Concerts at Old Trafford Stadium

As the biggest football stadium in the UK, Old Trafford has also been one of the greatest outdoor music venues to grace the Manchester skyline. While it’s been a couple of years since concerts at Old Trafford were held, this stadium has played host to some incredible artists over the years, including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Status Quo, Rod Stewart, Madness and the Rolling Stones.

Like most places in Manchester, the extensive Metro network makes getting to concerts at Old Trafford easy, with lines running up to midnight every day to ensure you get back to your home or accommodation safely. If you’re travelling from outside the city, Manchester Piccadilly is the closest train station. It’ll take you around 30 minutes to get to the stadium from here unless you hop on the Metro or jump in a taxi.

Getting there by tram

There are a number of stops within easy walking distance of the ground:

• Trafford Bar (Altrincham/Bury/Rochdale/Shaw and Crompton/Airport/East Didsbury lines)
• Wharfside (Trafford Park line)
• Exchange Quay (Eccles/Ashton lines)

Post-match, trams towards Manchester city centre on the Trafford Park line will not stop at Imperial War Museum. Please use the Wharfside stop for trams back to the city centre or, alternatively, consider walking to Exchange Quay.

If you have to drive, did you know that there are 24 park and ride sites in Greater Manchester, where you can park your car for free and hop on the tram to your destination? The nearest Park and Ride sites to Old Trafford are:

• Ladywell (Eccles line)
• Parkway (Trafford Park line)
• Sale Water Park (Airport line)

Beat the queue at the machines and touch-in and out at the on-stop machines using contactless Save money and travel with the family using our family travelcard. Remember, this is only available on the on-stop ticket machines. The stadium and all tram stops close to it are in Zone 2.

Getting there by bus

If you are intending to catch a bus to or from Old Trafford, the following commercial bus services will bring you closest to the ground – 250 , 255 , 256 , 263 and X50 .

You can see the nearest stops to the ground with our dedicated map .

Journey times could also be impacted due to the increased levels of traffic, so be sure to plan ahead and allow extra time for your travel.

Post-match shuttle bus

A match day shuttle bus service will operate for Premier League games (not for Champions League or League Cup games).

The service will depart from Chester Road (outside the Ford Car Garage), with drop-off points at Deansgate-Castlefield and Piccadilly.

There will be 10 buses to take fans back to the City Centre.

Tickets can be purchased on the bus with a single costing £3 for adults and £1.50 for children.

Get on board a bus with simple and clear low bus fares.

Adults will pay no more than £2 for a single bus journey, while a £5 1 day AnyBus Adult travelcard will cover unlimited bus travel within the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester until 3.59am the following day.

Getting there by car

Congestion on the roads close to Old Trafford will start to build from around 2 hours before each match as fans start to make their way to the ground.

According to data from previous matches, consider adding the additional journey time below, dependent on which direction you are approaching the ground from:

• If you are travelling from the west side of Manchester , plan an additional 20 minutes into any journey by road.
• If you are travelling from the east side of Manchester , along the Mancunian Way, expect an additional 15 minutes to your journey.
• If you are travelling from the south of Manchester via junction 7 of the M60, expect an additional 30 minutes added to your journey along the A56 Chester Road. The quickest route to the official car parks is via Parkway and Wharfside Way (M60 Junction 9).

At the end of the game, there will be road closures in place for supporter safety. Expect delays of up to 50 minutes if travelling in and around Old Trafford.

Planned roadworks

There are works underway to support the upgrade of cycling and walking facilities in the Talbot Road area. Please allow plenty of time to travel.

The next phase of the Chorlton to Manchester cycleway is now underway, with temporary traffic lights installed at the junction of Barlow Moor Road and Sandy Lane/High Lane. With three sets of lights now in place along Barlow Moor Road, journey times are significantly increasing on match days. Fans should look to avoid the area or to beat the queues by using public transport.

Match day car parking

Official parking is available at Old Trafford and can be booked online via the Manchester United website.

Please ensure that you are parking responsibly on match days, so that other road users and local residents can also use the highways in and around the ground.

Getting there by train

The ground is also only a short Metrolink ride (20 minutes) from Piccadilly Station in the city centre.

• From Manchester Piccadilly : Please board an Altrincham tram and get off Old Trafford. For tram services, just take the stairs down from the main concourse area at Piccadilly Station.
• From Victoria : Please board an Altrincham tram and get off Old Trafford.
• From Oxford Road : Please board an Altrincham tram from Deansgate-Castlefield to Old Trafford.

Please note that on some maps of the area, it depicts an Old Trafford train station. This is no longer in use, but the nearby Old Trafford tram stop provides links to all corners of Greater Manchester. Please see the information above for details.

Remember to plan your journey in advance of your trip by checking with your operator or on the National Rail website .

Getting there by bike

With a network of cycle lanes around the stadium, beat the queues and make cycling your top choice for getting to and from the match.

Cycle parking

No need to wonder whether there will be somewhere safe to park your bike, as Old Trafford provide free cycle racks at the following car parks:

• N2 (Sir Alex Ferguson Stand)
• E2 (East Stand)
• W2 (West Stand)

To secure your bike, make sure you take your own bike lock with you.

Please ensure that you use the bike racks provided, as locking your bike up at an unauthorised location around the ground may result in your bike being removed. For more information, please visit the Manchester United website .

If you're cycling to the ground via MediaCityUK, this is where TfGM's nearest Cycle Hub is located. Providing safe cycle parking with CCTV in operation, more information on how to use a cycle hub can be found on the Bee Active website .

Greater Manchester now offers the option to hire bikes. Through the Beryl app, you can locate and unlock your bike, get from A to B, then safely lock your hired bike up again - easy! Whether you decide to walk for a full or partial journey, you can beat the queues, see more of your city and make a positive choice for the environment by walking to Old Trafford.

Getting to Old Trafford from Piccadilly Station

Old Trafford Stadium is an iconic venue for football fans around the world. If you are visiting Manchester and staying in the city centre, Piccadilly Station is likely to be your starting point for getting to Old Trafford. In this article, we will outline the steps you need to take to get to Old Trafford from Piccadilly Station via the Metrolink tram system.

Step 1: Exiting Piccadilly Station

Upon arrival at Piccadilly Station, follow the signs for the exit. This may involve navigating through a shopping centre, so take your time and follow the signs carefully. Once you reach the station exit, turn left onto the main road (London Road).

Step 2: Walking to the Metrolink Station

From Piccadilly Station, the nearest Metrolink station is St. Peter’s Square, which is approximately a 10-minute walk away. To get there, continue straight along London Road until you reach the junction with Mosley Street. Turn right onto Mosley Street and follow it until you reach St. Peter’s Square.

Step 3: Boarding the Metrolink Tram

At St. Peter’s Square, locate the Metrolink tram stop and purchase a ticket from the machine or ticket office. Make sure to validate your ticket before boarding the tram.

Step 4: Choosing the Correct Tram Line

From St. Peter’s Square, take the Altrincham line towards Altrincham. Old Trafford Station is the third stop on this line, and the journey takes approximately 10 minutes.

Step 5: Alighting at Old Trafford Station

Once you arrive at Old Trafford Station, exit the tram and follow the signs for the stadium.

Step 6: Exiting Old Trafford Station

Option 1: Walking to Old Trafford Stadium

If you prefer to walk, follow the signs for Old Trafford Stadium, which is approximately a 10-minute walk from the station. The route is well signposted, and you will pass by the Manchester United Megastore and the Sir Alex Ferguson Stand on your way to the stadium.

Option 2: Taking a Shuttle Bus to Old Trafford Stadium

Alternatively, you can take a shuttle bus from the station to the stadium. These run on match days and cost around £2 per person. Follow the signs for the shuttle bus and purchase your ticket from the driver.

Alternative: Taking a Taxi to Old Trafford Stadium

If you prefer to take a taxi, there is a taxi rank located outside Old Trafford Station. Taxis can be expensive, especially on match days, so make sure to agree on a fare before getting into the taxi.

Old Trafford Stadium Tour – Theatre of Dreams

Manchester United are one of the most famous football teams in the world and they play at Old Trafford.  Reasons to take an Old Trafford stadium tour include;

• You’re a huge Manchester United fan
• One of the biggest football teams in the world

• Learn about Old Trafford in World War II

Due to the popularity of Manchester United, I recommend you book the Old Trafford stadium tour online in advance .  Moreover, if you’re looking for something extra special, consider a Legends Tour .

You can choose a hotel in Manchester City Center and take a tram to the stadium.  Alternatively, there are several hotels close to the stadium .

Old Trafford is in southwestern Manchester, adjacent to Salford Quays and Old Trafford cricket ground.  You can take the tram from central Manchester to Old Trafford station.  From there, it’s a short walk past the cricket ground and along Sir Matt Busby Way to the stadium.  Alternatively, I recommend the Media City stop if you also plan to visit Media City UK.

Holy Trinity Statue

In front of the East Stand are 2 important statues.  Firsty, is the statue of Sir Matt Busby who is arguably the greatest ever Manchester United manager.  Opposite Sir Matt Busby statue is the United Trinity statue.  This features 3 Man United legends, George Best, Denis Law and Sir Bobby Charlton.  Sir Bobby Charlton was one of the survivors of the Munich Air Disaster.  All 3 of these went on to win the European Cup in 1968 with Manchester United.  For this reason, Manchester United was the first English team to win the European Cup.  Did you know the first British team to win the European Cup was Celtic in 1967.

Berlin Air Disaster Memorial

On 6th February the Manchester United team were returning home from Belgrade.  As a matter of fact, they had just qualified for the European Cup semi final.  The plane landed in Munich to refuel.  Due to severe weather the plane crashed on take off.  As a result, 23 of the 46 on board lost their lives including several first team players.  Manager Sir Matt Busby was onboard and survived.  He went on to rebuild the team and Manchester United won the European Cup 10 years later in 1968.  Finally, did you know there is also a Berlin Air Disaster memorial in the Red Star Belgrade Museum in Serbia ?

Sir Alex Ferguson Statue

Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the most successful and respected managers worldwide.  He retired in 2013 after 26 years in charge of Man United.  During this period he won 13 Premier Leagues and 2 Champions Leagues.  As a matter of fact he won a total of 38 trophies during his Manchester United reign.  Not a lot of people remember this but Sir Alex Ferguson also took Scotland to the World Cup Finals in 1986.  You can see his statue outside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand which holds over 26,000 spectators.

Old Trafford Stadium Tour Meeting Point

The stadium tour starts from inside the Sir Alex Ferguson stand.  When you take the stadium tour you also have access to the Manchester United Museum.  Some of the historic turnstiles from 1910 are on display in the museum.  In fact, there are still some in use throughout the stadium which work perfectly despite being over 100 years old.

As you would imagine, a football club with as much history as Manchester United has a huge museum.  In addition, the Manchester United trophy room is huge.  The museum takes you from the formation of the club, through the war years and up to the present day.

Old Trafford Facts

Old Trafford is the largest club stadium in the United Kingdom.  It’s also the 3rd largest stadium in the UK after Wembley and Twickenham .  The capacity is 74,994 spectators and it sells out regularly.  It’s often referred to as the Theatre of Dreams which was definitely true throughout the Sir Alex Ferguson era.  The nickname, Theatre of Dreams was created by Busby Babe, Sir Bobby Charlton.  Lastly, Old Trafford was a 1966 World Cup stadium and hosted Portugal, Bulgaria and Hungary in Group 3.

Imagine the greats who have enjoyed a game from the VIP section.  Prince Harry, Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham have all enjoyed a match from which are arguably the best seats in the house.  Furthermore, you could stretch it and add Victoria Beckham to the list!

Away Team Dressing Rooms

Unfortunately, the away team dressing rooms are not part of the Old Trafford stadium tour.  Due to the fact this is a 5 star venue I expect them to be of excellent quality.  Unlike the away team dressing rooms at St James’ Park , home of northern rivals Newcastle United.

Home Team Dressing Rooms

I visited Old Trafford towards the end of the Jose Mourinho reign.  Although he had an unsuccessful reign at the club, he was highly influential in the design of the home team dressing room.  As well as featuring the homely Manchester United logo it also features state of the art analysis equipment.  Lastly, you’re welcome to take a photo next to your favorite players shirt.

Players Tunnel

You will enter the Old Trafford stadium through the famous players tunnel.  The guide will play the entrance music which is ‘This is the one’ by Stone Roses.  It became the entrance music in 2000 after a request by Gary Neville.  Although the song has nothing to do with football, Stone Roses are a Manchester band.

Pitch Side and Dugouts

One of the most identifiable parts of Old Trafford are the dugouts.  You’re welcome to sit and take photos from both the home as well as the away end.  Do you remember the infamous moment when Arsene Wenger was sent into the crowd for kicking a bottle?  You’re welcome to stand there and recreate the moment!

Old Trafford Time Capsule

In between the dugouts is the Old Trafford time capsule.  It was created in 2010 to celebrate the 100th birthday of the stadium.  An interesting fact is that relatives of Archibald Leitch helped bury the time capsule.  Archibald Leitch was in fact the original architect of Old Trafford.  He also designed other famous stadiums in the UK including Anfield , Ibrox and Hillsborough .  Did you know there’s also a time capsule at the Emirates Stadium ?

What Remains at Old Trafford from the World War II Bombings?

Old Trafford was bombed in 1941 by the Germans.  Not only Old Trafford but the whole city of Manchester was heavily bombed in what became known as the Manchester Blitz.  As a matter of fact, Old Trafford was almost completely destroyed and became abandoned until 1949.  What remains of the original stadium built in 1910?  The narrow tunnel between the dugouts is all which remains from the original stadium.

The current Manchester United manager will talk to the press after the match.  You’re welcome to sit in the iconic Manchester United press room and pose for photos.  You may remember Jose Mourinho made many infamous speeches from this room!

Man United could have five potential temporary home options if they have to leave Old Trafford

M anchester United are at the beginning of their new era under Sir Jim Ratcliffe yet already the fanbase is at odds over one of their new co-owners' ambitions.

Ratcliffe wants to redevelop United's home to bring it into the 21st century. At the moment, his ambition is to build a completely new stadium while many fans would rather see the money pumped into the existing Old Trafford.

The INEOS owner's compromise is to build the new stadium within a stone's throw of the current stadium. However, whichever option ultimately comes to fruition shall run the risk of United having to find a temporary home while the plans are completed.

This begs the question as to where United could move. MEN Sport takes a look at the five options which could be on the table should they need to leave Old Trafford briefly.

Etihad Stadium

The option which is in equal parts the most likely but also the most detested decision is to ground share with Manchester City . Neither fanbase will like the idea but it could be the only realistic choice on the table.

City are unlikely to want to give United a helping hand to become a direct rival once again while the Reds will be cautious of being charged extortionate rent from the blue half of Manchester which they could use to distance the gap. For this reason, it must also be considered the last resort.

Toughsheet Community Stadium

Amusing sponsor's name aside, Bolton Wanderers' stadium is certainly a viable option. With a capacity of more than 28,000 it would be a big reduction for what United have at the moment.

However, it wouldn't be a big move away from their current home and it also offers good transport links for fans who are travelling from Manchester city centre. It would be interesting to see if the Reds would be happy taking that hit to their attendance though.

Blackburn Rovers' home offers a bigger capacity at more than 31,000 however it is nearly an hour's drive from Old Trafford. For the extra 3,000 fans United could squeeze in for home matches, it is unclear whether Ratcliffe would be happy to make match-goers travel that far out of their way.

Bramley Moore Dock Stadium

Like playing at the Etihad Stadium, temporarily moving to Merseyside would be a hugely controversial decision. Pigs will sooner fly before United play home matches at Anfield but Everton could be open to letting the Reds rent out their stadium temporarily.

The prospect may appeal to United considering they would not have to give money to a direct competitor and the Toffees could use the extra money with Financial Fair Play (FFP) restrictions still a big concern. Whether fans would welcome the club playing home matches in Liverpool is unclear.

Emirates Old Trafford

Finally comes the wildcard option which fans may prefer. United could ask their next-door neighbours Lancashire County Cricket Club whether they could rent their stadium temporarily.

The other Old Trafford stands outside the regeneration area where the 'new Old Trafford' will be built and it would be received much better by supporters to be giving money to a non-competitor. The stadium holds 22,000 when test matches are played so United may have to fund new stands to bump the attendance to their needs.

Lancashire may have reservations considering the toll playing football would have on the square but they are building a new ground at Farington which is set to open in 2025. Maybe they would be open to allowing United to take on the ground temporarily so long as reassurances were made that the pitch would be returned to its previous state once done.

Gary Neville has predicted Manchester United will all but end Arsenal ’s Premier League title hopes at Old Trafford.

The Gunners, currently sitting one point above Manchester City having played a game more, visit the Theatre of Dreams on Sunday in the 4.30pm kick-off.

Two more wins from Arsenal, against United and Everton, would see them finish the season on 89 points and pile the pressure on defending champions Man City.

Pep Guardiola’s side will reach 91 points if they win their final three games but any slip-up will open the door to Arsenal due to their superior goal difference.

Neville believes Arsenal will be the first to wobble, however, predicting the Gunners will drop points at Old Trafford to leave Man City on the verge of a record fourth successive Premier League title.

Manchester United are struggling under Erik ten Hag and suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace last time out , but Neville is nevertheless backing his former side to produce a performance against the current leaders.

‘This is the big one,’ he said on The Overlap . ‘Arsenal have a poor record here.

‘There’s three things that stand out to me. Firstly, this is massive for Arsenal. Secondly, United’s record against the big teams isn’t that bad at home. A lot of the top teams haven’t beat United at home. And thirdly, Arsenal have got a really poor record at Old Trafford.

‘People are almost dismissing Man United in this game because they’ve been that bad, which we all get, but it can be a graveyard, Old Trafford.

‘Look, Arsenal should win but I’m not sure they will. Arsenal should win but there’s a madness about Old Trafford and this game, usually in a title race it doesn’t work out how you think.

‘I’m going 2-2, this is just my feeling. Arsenal should win but it’s a feeling I have.’

If Neville is correct, Arsenal can reach a maximum of 87 points, meaning Man City would need just two wins from their final three games to guarantee the title remains at the Etihad Stadium.

While all eyes will be on Old Trafford on Sunday, Manchester City are in action 24 hours earlier, travelling to west London to face Fulham before they take on Arsenal’s north London rivals Tottenham and finish the season against West Ham.
