Philip Selway: Tiny Desk Concert

Philip Selway knows how to surround himself with talent. Best known as Radiohead 's longtime drummer, Selway also presides over richly rewarding collaborations on his gorgeous, ruminative solo records.

For his Tiny Desk concert, Selway brought in a fresh group of high-octane partners in the form of former Antibalas drummer Chris Vatalaro — "There is absolutely no way I am playing drums in front of Chris, ever," Selway said as he introduced the band — as well as four members of the brilliant American Contemporary Music Ensemble . (A similar ACME lineup graced the Tiny Desk with Max Richter in early 2020, in case you feel like revisiting it and having a li'l cry.)

For his part, Selway performed three songs from this year's Strange Dance — his first solo project in nearly nine years — with a mix of deep warmth and wry, self-effacing modesty. It's an approach that suits his kind, lived-in songs, which echo everyone from Nick Drake to, in their gentlest moments, bands like Pink Floyd and The Kinks .

Philip Selway is an English Musician who has made such a name for him self as the drummer for the internationally recognised band, Radiohead. It is all about his debut solo album, which has quite an acoustic vibe to it, especially when he performs it live. He performs songs such as “It Will End In Tears” and “Around Again” making some pretty vast waves in music, not to mention he already has the undying love for his music coming from those real die-hard Radiohead fans that have been accumulated from the last twenty years plus. “Let it Go” is an interestingly experimental song with its strange time signatures and odd melodies above some interesting chords. The whole vibe is very interesting an experimental in this intimate atmosphere this evening. Fair play to Selway for releasing a good batch of solo material. It’s definitely worth going down to your local record store and picking up this album, with it’s simplicity and complexities all married into one.

Selway is a great musician, a great artist. Seeing him take the stage after so many years being around, in the almost backstage place of the drummer, was an intimate experience. It is like seeing a kid, maybe your kid - depends on how much you like radiohead, growing old. And because of that, you forgive a bit of clumsiness, nervousness and stress. Selway and his band, breathe music. All of them play two or three different instruments, the even use a chainsaw. Selway's music reflects the methodology and perfectionism of a drummer and the romanticism of a quitarist.

Big downside was teh Southabnk Centre who delayed the gig more than an hour.

Coming Up For Air

Philip Selway Weatherhouse Bella Union

One of the inherent risks of being in a band like Radiohead is that any further work bearing your name will be judged in its overbearing critical light. Oftentimes this weight of expectation is enough to deter artists from going it alone, yet Philip Selway is the third member of the superband to take that plunge – not a bad ratio in a group with only five members. This commitment to pursuing extra-curricular musical projects is certainly worthy of praise. However, while Thom Yorke’s commensurable musicianship and experience as a lead vocalist can (usually) be relied upon to produce material not far from Radiohead’s own standard, a couple of listens to Phil Selway’s debut effort Weatherhouse leaves one lasting impression – there’s a reason he’s not ordinarily a singer. And Selway isn’t so much a bad singer, just a rather bland one. The instrumentation across the 10 tracks is, for the most part, pretty robust. Opener Coming Up For Air is compelling in its ponderous broodiness; It Will End In Tears has a genuinely rousing, string-backed finale; while the drumming on Around Again is – as you might expect – both dense and skilful. However, for the most part the songwriting feels shallow and undeveloped, with Selway’s naive lyrics and predisposition towards twee melodies resulting in something that is, ultimately, a little lacking in impact. From a new artist on the scene, Weatherhouse might seem like a competent debut with room for real promise; from an artist as well travelled as Selway, it’s a little too predictable in its choices to be really memorable.

Philip Selway: “Allow yourself to be in the moment”

Name: Philip James Selway DOB: 23 May 1967 Place of birth: Oxfordshire, England, United Kingdom Occupation: Musician, singer, songwriter

philip selway tour setlist

Mr. Selway, after over 30 years as the drummer for Radiohead and several successful solo albums, how would you describe the place you’re in as a musician today?

I would say simply that musically, I’m in a position that I'm enjoying probably more than ever before. I have an awful lot of outlets at the moment and each project that I've been involved in draws on something different, musically, from me and satisfies all the different musical itches that I have. I still have this sense of being far from finished, like there's still a lot to learn and a lot of music to make as well. And that's a great feeling, because otherwise you would just shut up shop and do something else, wouldn't you? It feels like a good place to be.

Do you think you would ever have felt this creatively and artistically fulfilled if you’d stayed just a member in a band?

I think you need to take the two together. That's what makes up my full creative access, because these projects are such different experiences. When we come back to Radiohead, I love doing that as well, but I’ve realized that drumming doesn't have to offer me absolutely everything, musically.

“There isn’t an instrument to hide behind. You’re singing, and it can feel quite vulnerable. But you also gain a greater understanding of yourself, and what you can bring to that role.”

Drummers are also often seen as being a bit more in the background of the band, even though for a project like Radiohead, the percussion elements are really foundational to your sound.

Sure, I mean, it’s a lovely position to occupy when you're on stage in the shows, because you're not center stage. You get that sense of connection when you're playing, but you’re also one of the background figures, you can observe what's going on around you and how the audience is responding. And that feeds back into my playing. It's been really interesting over this past decade making that transition from being at the back of the stage to the front of the stage.

I can imagine. What do you remember about the first time you went on stage as a solo artist?

I was petrified! ( Laughs ) And I think that kind of fear stays with you for quite a while because it's a whole different kind of stagecraft that you've got to learn. There isn't an instrument to hide behind. You’re singing, and it can feel quite vulnerable. But you also gain a greater understanding of yourself, and what you can bring to that role.

Did you also feel some pressure to meet the expectations of Radiohead fans?

Coming from Radiohead, of course that brings some expectations with it. Even with Radiohead, we had to deal with those expectations until we got to a point where people accept that you’re a band that can go anywhere. Each record was kind of a reaction to the last one, and we got into a very luxurious position where our fans understood and encouraged that in us. I'm very grateful to how people take on music in that way. So yes, there definitely can be those pressures that you're talking about, even more so as a solo artist. I remember those initial shows, going out and thinking that people have this impression of what a member of Radiohead should bring to this. And that was really scary. It was something that I really wrestled with.

How did you get through those fears?

The only way of doing it is by going out to do it. I kind of tried to hold my nerve with it and stuck with it. It’s kind of trusting in your process now, knowing that I’ve done this enough times where it has been really scary, but something does emerge from the darkness of self-doubt. I do feel more confident in that now. Self-doubt doesn’t ever go away, I think you just learn how to work alongside it.

Is that also how you approached things like singing and songwriting for your solo project? Was there an adjustment period there as well?

Yes, very much so! Coming into it, I knew I could sing in tune. But I didn't feel that my singing voice was at the same point as my drumming. I had a very distinctive drumming style, and that’s what I wanted to find in my singing — but I had a lot of doubt over whether that was even attainable. I remember on my first album, Familial, I sort of tried impersonating Beth Gibbons, you know, from Portishead? It started to gel more, it was like the first rung on the ladder, and that’s where my singing grew out of, I developed it from there.

“For me to find some kind of space where these songwriting ideas bubble up in me as they’re doing in Thom and the others… It’s really been an amazing process for me.”

You eventually decided to forego drumming entirely on your most recent album. Is that because you wanted to focus more on that development?

I'd actually started off drumming at the beginning of the sessions for Strange Dance , and I realized it just wasn't happening in the way I wanted it to. I'd spent a lot of time crafting the songs and getting them to that point that I hadn’t really thought about drumming to be honest with you. And as a consequence, I hadn't really been drumming myself either. I felt a bit off pace, my musical mind was focused elsewhere. I knew the textures that I wanted to be in there rhythmically, I had this idea that I wanted to make a record with a big soundscape to it, that is tall and broad, and that would accommodate many musical voices. I ended up asking the incredible drummer Valentina Magaletti, and she dropped this whole energy and life into the songs which I would have missed out on otherwise. It was kind of a blessing in disguise.

It must also be great to have this kind of creative control; where you can make decisions entirely on your own without needing to consult with bandmates.

Having that freedom, it’s kind of scary because it’s all coming from you. In Radiohead, it’s definitely a different process because I'm responding to what everybody else is doing, and then I'll bring drum ideas into the mix. It’s very much part of that collaboration. I think the way that we work in Radiohead is that Thom is is the principal songwriter, and he's amazing. So for me to find some kind of space where these songwriting ideas bubble up in me as they're doing in Thom and the others… It’s really been an amazing process for me. And then that feeds back into it when you go back into the band set up, it informs how you approach those projects.

It sounds like you’ve really found your ideal way of working, where songs are coming out very naturally.

Oh, absolutely. And the ideas that resonate the most are often the ones that have just bubbled up when you've been looking the other way, you know? Suddenly, you have an idea! That's brilliant. That's how I work, really, I don't sit down and think, “Right, I've got to write something today.” That doesn't produce the goods for me. It’s funny, I’ve been back on tour recently and I started to try and prepare a few things to say in between songs, but when you actually get on stage, it becomes a monologue instead of a dialogue. So instead, I’m trying to just relax into it more, to plan it less and let it bubble up in that same way. You have much better ideas. It feels like a much better process when you allow yourself to be in the moment.

Philip Selway

philip selway tour setlist

Philip Selway followed in the footsteps of Radiohead bandmates Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood by releasing a solo album, Familial, in 2010. Previously known for his drumming, drum programming, and occasional background vocals, Selway slipped easily into songwriting mode while also switching to guitar. The groundwork for his solo album came with his participation in Neil Finn ‘s 2001 all-star concerts, dubbed 7 Worlds Collide. 7 Worlds Collide later took the shape of a group and released an album, The Sun Came Out, in 2009. In addition to playing percussion and acoustic guitar, Selway provided a pair of hushed, folk-tinged songs — “The Ties That Bind Us” and “The Witching Hour” — and sang lead on them. Re-recordings of these two songs formed the basis of Familial. The album involved assistance from 7 Worlds Collide associates Lisa Germano , Soul Coughing ‘s Sebastian Steinberg, and Wilco ‘s Glenn Kotche and Jeff Tweedy . It was released in August 2010 through Bella Union in the U.K. and Nonesuch in the U.S. Selway’s sophomore effort, Weatherhouse, followed in 2014. More complex and involving than his mostly acoustic debut, with a broader instrumental palette, it had something of the feel of latter-day Radiohead or Yorke ‘s solo work but with an uncategorizable ’80s/’90s melodic twist.

Following the 2016 release of Radiohead ‘s A Moon Shaped Pool, Selway turned his attention to scoring the Polly Steele film Let Me Go. The soundtrack arrived in October 2017. ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi

Matt Pond (of The Natural Lines)

philip selway tour setlist

“sweet, yearning indie rock” – Brooklyn Vegan

“Matt Pond’s latest incarnation heads for the wide-open spaces of heart-swelling, Petty/Springsteen American rock.” – MOJO

Pond’s songwriting builds up to a soaring high, tapping into a magnetic vein of instant indie joy.” – Under the Radar

Matt Pond’s very name evokes the natural world in which his songs are so often set, with their evocative lyrics about the sometimes jagged edges of love, the pros and cons of connection, and the agony and ecstasy of memory. He has always mapped the universal emotions of being alive onto the contours of his own stories.

From the band’s beginnings in Philadelphia in the late ’90s to their current home in the heart of the Hudson Valley, through 13 albums (among them Emblems, Several Arrows Later, The Dark Leaves, The State of Gold, and, most recently, the luminous The Natural Lines), Matt Pond PA has always been a living, breathing organism—one that’s constantly changing. One notable mainstay: Pond’s longtime right-hand man, Chris Hansen.

“I named the band after myself, but the fact is that this is a complete collaboration,” Pond says. “Everyone I’ve worked with lives in my head and in my songs.”

American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME)

philip selway tour setlist

Since 2004, led by cellist and artistic director Clarice Jensen, the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) has risen to the highest ranks of American new music through a mix of meticulous musicianship, artistic vision, engaging collaborations, and unwavering standards in every regard. The membership of the amorphous collective includes some of the brightest young stars in the field. NPR calls them “contemporary music dynamos,” and Strings reports, “ACME’s absorbing playing pulsed with warm energy. . . Shared glances and inhales triggered transitions in a flow so seamless it seemed learned in a Jedi temple.” ACME was honored by ASCAP during its 10th anniversary season in 2015 for the “virtuosity, passion, and commitment with which it performs and champions American composers.”

The ensemble has performed at leading international venues including Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, BAM, The Kennedy Center, Washington Performing Arts, UCLA’s Royce Hall, Stanford Live, Chicago’s Millennium Park, Duke Performances, The Satellite in Los Angeles, STG Presents in Seattle, Melbourne Recital Hall and Sydney Opera House in Australia, and at festivals including the Sacrum Profanum Festival in Poland, All Tomorrow’s Parties in England, Auckland Arts Festival in New Zealand, Summer Nostos Festival in Greece, Boston Calling, and Big Ears in Knoxville, TN.

World premieres given by ACME include Ingram Marshall’s Psalmbook, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Drone Mass (commissioned by ACME in 2015), Caroline Shaw’s Ritornello, Phil Kline’s Out Cold, William Brittelle’s Loving the Chambered Nautilus, Timo Andres’ Senior and Thrive on Routine, Caleb Burhans’ Jahrzeit, and many more. In 2016 at The Kitchen, ACME premiered Clarice Jensen’s transcription of Julius Eastman’s The Holy Presence of Joan d’Arc for ten cellos, the score of which had been lost since the premiere in 1981. Jensen transcribed a recording of the work to recreate the score.

ACME’s collaborators have included The Richard Alston Dance Company, Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance, Gibney Dance, Satellite Ballet, Meredith Monk, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Max Richter, actress Barbara Sukowa, filmmaker Jim Jarmusch, Blonde Redhead, Grizzly Bear, Low, Matmos, Micachu & The Shapes, Jeff Mangum, A Winged Victory for the Sullen, Roomful of Teeth, Lionheart, and Theo Bleckmann.

In March 2022, ACME released the world premiere recording of Jóhann Jóhannsson’s contemporary oratorio Drone Mass on Deutsche Grammophon, with Theatre of Voices led by Paul Hillier. Gramophone included the album on its list of Best New Classical Recordings. Of the album, Gramophone wrote, “Since Jóhann Jóhannsson’s death in 2018 at the age of only 48, his label DG has done much to promote the Icelandic composer’s posthumous reputation by releasing several soundtrack albums and retrospective collections. One nevertheless senses there exists among the many musical cues and film themes a work of real vitality, power and significance – a jewel in the crown of Jóhannsson’s creative achievements. Drone Mass may well be that work. On one level, this contemporary oratorio for voices, string quartet and electronics – commissioned by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME) led by cellist Clarice Jensen, who are superb on this recording – is typically Jóhannssonian in its uncanny juxtaposition of the strange with the familiar and its rich interplay of multiple meanings.”

ACME’s discography also includes its first portrait album, Thrive on Routine, on Sono Luminus; Jóhann Jóhannsson’s Orphée and Max Richter’s eight-hour piece, Sleep (which the ensemble regularly performs live), both on Deutsche Grammophon; Fantasias with thereminist Carolina Eyck on Butterscotch Records; Joseph Byrd: NYC 1960-63, the first commercial recording of the music of rediscovered American Fluxus composer Joseph Byrd, on New World Records; William Brittelle’s electro-acoustic chamber work Loving the Chambered Nautilus, and Jefferson Friedman’s On In Love with vocalist Craig Wedren, both on New Amsterdam Records.
