Located in the rolling green Ozark Mountains on the north edge of Arkansas, Eureka Springs is a hotspot for travelers. Visitors flock to the small urban area for both its charming Victorian-era city center and the natural beauty surrounding it, including a wealth of mineral springs for bathing in. Plus, in spite of its tranquil location, this destination is easily accessible by car from major Midwestern hubs like Kansas City (230 miles) and Oklahoma City (250 miles); cities like Springfield (Missouri), Tulsa and Little Rock are all even closer by. That makes Eureka Springs ideal for a weekend getaway, although there are plenty of reasons to stay longer, if you so choose. Here are the most interesting and fun things to do in the area.

Beaver Lake

While it may boast plenty of stunning natural beauty, Beaver Lake is actually an artificial reservoir, built in the 1960s by damming the White River. The eastern shore is about 10 miles northwest of Eureka Springs, and this lake contains more than 28,000 acres of water at full pool. Beaver Lake is thus a popular destination for outdoor activities: With numerous coves and inlets and nearly 500 miles of shoreline, you will find no shortage of scenic places to stake out for a hike through the woods or a swim in the blue waters. Picnic spots and boat launches dot the area around the reservoir, and the creation of Beaver Dam has made for a popular cold water fishing spot on the White River (striped bass is one common catch here). If you want more than just a daytrip, various cabins, hotels and campgrounds are scattered around the lake, making it a viable alternative to staying in Eureka Springs proper: Beaver Lake Cottages and Beaver Lakefront Cabins are two nearby options that are highly rated.

Thorncrown Chapel

Nestled in the tranquil woods less than 5 miles northwest of Eureka Springs sits this renowned architectural icon. Designed by famed Arkansan architect E. Fay Jones − a one-time protege of Frank Lloyd Wright – to complement its natural surroundings, the woodland sanctuary stands 48 feet tall and features 425 windows. Thorncrown Chapel, set atop native stone and colored flagstone, was commissioned by Jim Reed, who wanted to share the beauty and views from his land with Ozark visitors. Since opening in 1980, this serene, nondenominational place of worship has welcomed more than 7 million visitors and was listed as one of the American Institute of Architects' top 10 buildings of the 20th century. With Thorncrown Chapel described by its creator as a "place to think your best thoughts," the public can visit for free and contemplate life's issues, big and small.

The chapel is open daily from March to November, and visitors can also stop by for Sunday services from April to December; it's closed in January and February. If you're visiting in the afternoon, particularly on a weekend, you'll want to call ahead, as the chapel can sometimes close early for weddings and other events.

Despite Eureka Springs' relatively small population size of around 2,200 residents, its historic downtown is a major tourist destination. The city's location on numerous hills gives it a unique layout with winding streets and houses perched on cliffs. For a frighteningly good time, take a tour of the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa, billed as "America's Most Haunted Hotel." The architecturally unique hotel opened in the late 19th century and mixes French Renaissance and Richardsonian Romanesque building styles: With turrets, verandas and other intricate building features, it's the kind of spot with plenty of places for ghosts to hide. Experienced guides walk guests through some of the hotel's most historic – and creepiest – rooms, as well as a former morgue on-site. Visitors say the tour guides in period clothing are entertaining as they share stories about people who died at the hotel – and whose ghosts have reportedly been spotted in the years and decades since. These tragic figures include a stonemason who fell to his death during construction, a 4-year-old who died of appendicitis and even a hotel cat buried on the property.

Tickets can be bought online or at the hotel, but advance booking is recommended, as tours can sell out. Featured on "Ghost Hunters" and "Ghost Adventures," the tours can get a little spooky and are recommended for children ages 8 and older; visitors 16 or younger must be accompanied by an adult. Alternatively, shorter, kid-friendly tours operate on select days.

Tour the mineral springs

As its name suggests, Eureka Springs encompasses 66 cold mineral springs, which were historically thought to have healing powers. (If you're looking for springs of the hot variety, you'll want to drive about 200 miles south to the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas .) A number of these cold springs bubble up to the surface in peaceful city parks and gardens, which were established by Eureka Springs to preserve them. For a relaxing jaunt around the city, consider a stop at least one of these parks, or build your own walking tour around the 15 different springs that sit within easy walking distance of the city center. Basin Spring (formerly known as the Indians' Healing Spring), which now feeds a fountain in Basin Spring Park in the heart of the city, is one of the most notable. Other popular springs include Crescent Spring in its namesake park, which is known for its Victorian gazebo and rock walls, and Sweet Spring, set in a park amid the flowers. The city has a helpful map pointing out the springs you can walk to.

Bathe in the healing waters at a local spa

Unfortunately, you can't just jump into the mineral springs dotted about Eureka Springs; many of them are, after all, in small public parks. To soak in those mineral-laden waters, you'll need to head to a local bathhouse or spa. For a unique experience, the Palace Hotel & Bath House is a good bet. This historic property has been in the wellness business for over a century and still offers some of the same services it did back in the day, such as mineral soaks in claw-footed tubs and eucalyptus steam treatments in wooden barrels. Past guests call the hotel a wonderful way to pamper yourself, complete with relaxing massage services.

Eureka Springs Historical Museum

Trace the evolution of Eureka Springs at this museum downtown. Its location in a classic three-story Victorian-era home built in 1889 is ideally suited to a history museum. The Eureka Springs Historical Museum covers major ground, from when Native Americans first discovered mineral springs in the area to when Eureka Springs morphed into first a "health resort" and then a countercultural town for artists. This attraction houses a collection of more than 10,000 artifacts, including musical instruments, travel memorabilia and photographs. Naturally, patrons can browse exhibits showcasing local artists, along with a restored mural by H. Louis Freund. Recent visitors say the interesting displays and exhibits make this museum worth a stop year-round.

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church

Adjacent to the historic Crescent Hotel you'll find this intriguing church, which has earned several mentions in Ripley's Believe It or Not! publications. The reason? The sole entry point to the St. Elizabeth Catholic Church is through its bell tower. But the unique entrance isn't the only reason to visit this place of worship: Its architecture, inspired by the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, is truly distinctive. The interior is decked out with marble surfaces, and the pink-tinted ceilings combined with a chandelier made of thousands of crystals give an ethereal sort of lighting to the church's auditorium. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

Here's one for cat people: Drive about 10 miles south of Eureka Springs and you'll hit this refuge for big cats. A family-run nonprofit, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1978, when three members of the Jackson family took in an 8-month-old lion cub that had been chained to a tree. More than 40 years later, this feline-focused haven houses nearly 100 rescued animals, with an emphasis on tigers, lions, cougars and leopards.

Turpentine Creek isn't a zoo but rather a home for animals in need, aimed at treating them with dignity and compassion while letting them roam. So while activities like touching or feeding the wildlife are off the table, recent visitors enjoy the opportunity to see what this refuge is doing for the rescued animals, adding that the tours are educational and the staff is knowledgeable. Entry includes an hourlong tour around the refuge on a tram, and visitors can wander freely in a self-guided discovery area afterward. Turpentine Creek even has on-site accommodation, so you can make the experience feel like a safari with a stay in an eclectic range of lodges and tents.

The Great Passion Play

Add a spiritual side to your vacation with a trip to this epic open-air theater, which puts on a reenactment of the last days of Jesus Christ's life. With its multilevel set, intricate lighting design and cast of over 100, recent attendees say the visual effects are impressive and the performance appeals to all ages; some even attend the show multiple times per year. The Great Passion Play is performed in a large outdoor amphitheater with 4,100 seats and a 550-foot-wide stage that has multiple levels. Beyond the show, travelers can check out the on-site Bible Museum as well as the Holy Land Tour, which will take you through important biblical sites such as a historically accurate, full-size re-creation of the ancient East Jerusalem Gate and Marketplace. Since this is an outdoor venue, the play typically only takes place from late May to late October. However, in the off-season, you can still visit the Holy Land and Bible Museum.

Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down Music Theater

For a knee-slapping good time after dark in Eureka Springs, consider this nightly variety show at a theater on the east side of town. Running for nearly 40 years, the Hoe-Down offers up a must-see mix of both country and gospel musical numbers, alongside family-friendly comedy skits. The cast is led by charismatic comic Mike Nichols, who brings characters like Uncle Posture Pedic and bumbling janitor Tator "Chip" Patches to the stage, accompanied by a professional troupe of actors and musicians. Shows run four nights a week from April to November, and you're typically advised to buy tickets in advance. Recent attendees say the shows are a refreshing mix of comedy and music that entertain a wide range of ages.

Onyx Cave Park

Less than 10 miles northeast of Eureka Springs lies this cave with layered rock formations made of natural flowstone. This rocky material is formed from minerals left behind by flowing water, which, in a setting like Onyx Cave Park, takes on a beautifully textured and rippled shape that can resemble curtains. Flowstone is sometimes known as "cave onyx," but visitors should take note that no real onyx can be found here.

For a small entry fee, visitors can take a self-guided tour through the cave complex, equipped with radio headphones that give you all the details you'll want to know. This family-friendly attraction requires no specialty caving equipment – but be sure to bring a jacket or sweater, as the temperature hovers around 57 degrees in this subterranean space. Once you're out of the caverns, other activities on-site include ax throwing and gemstone panning; if you're good with the pan, you'll hopefully walk away with some gemstones to take home with you. Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway

Amtrak might not stop in Eureka Springs, but you can hop aboard this train for a scenic 4.5-mile ride into the Ozarks aboard a vintage 1940s-era diesel locomotive. You have several options for your ride on the Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway. The Excursion train, for example, lasts an hour and features commentary from an on-board conductor. You can also opt for one of the lunch or dinner trains in a 1920s-style dining car without narration; both of these come with a full meal served in an ornate dining car. The dinner trip is a fancier affair, with dishes like prime rib on offer – and it's recommended you dress up. Children under 5 cannot take the dinner train, but they're welcome on the shorter and more affordable lunch trip. Recent riders appreciate the ambiance of a bygone era but note the lunch and dinner rides are more about the experience than the cuisine.

The Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway is a seasonal attraction: It runs regularly from mid-May to late October, while in April and early May it operates on a much more limited schedule.

Intrigue Theater

Mix together an illusionist, a medium, and a stunning church-like theater with stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings, and you get this stellar night of entertainment in Eureka Springs. The dynamic duo of illusionist Sean-Paul and private investigator-turned-clairvoyant Juliana Fay have performed everywhere from the USS Oklahoma submarine to the main stage on "America's Got Talent" – but their home is the Ozarks, where they put on a show up to five times a week before an intimate audience of 100 people. The pair's talents, which include everything from levitation to comedy sketches to other magic tricks, make for an eclectic event.

Recent attendees enjoyed the performance, saying the small size of the theater gives everyone a good view and the audience participation provides a unique magic show experience. Given the theater's size, however, buying tickets in advance is highly recommended.

Quigley's Castle

Billed as "the Ozarks' strangest dwelling," this oddball home south of Eureka Springs is the product of a nature-loving woman who designed her house to have maximum room for greenery. On top of that, the creator of Quigley's Castle demolished her previous house while her husband was away at work so he would be forced to help build her dream home.

Quigley's Castle features large gaps between the flooring and walls where designer Elise Quigley planted flowering tropical plants that now stretch up to the second story. Quigley continued to collect plants and natural objects and integrate them into the house and garden through to her death in the 1980s. Both inside the house and outdoors you'll find numerous rock formations and plenty of other decorative odds and ends. Recent visitors state that the garden, unique architecture and historical details make this "castle" a truly one-of-a-kind place to visit.

And visit, you can: Quigley's grandchildren now take care of the site, which is open regularly from April to October; travelers hoping to head there in March and November should call ahead to confirm opening days and times.

Blue Spring Heritage Center

A must-see for anyone interested in nature or history, this beautiful 33-acre outdoor attraction was a trading post for Native Americans. Later, it became a stopover point and respite for the Cherokee people during their forced migration known as Trail of Tears; they were drawn to the blue-tinged natural spring found here given its prominence in Indigenous stories. Blue Spring is still active and releases some 38 million gallons of water per day. The land around the spring-fed trout-filled lagoon hosts a garden filled with native plants and flowers, and you may well spot some helmeted guinea fowl walking around the grounds. Stop by the on-site visitor center to learn about the historical importance of Blue Spring.

Blue Spring Heritage Center is situated less than 10 miles northwest of Eureka Springs. The center is typically open from mid-March to late November, before closing for the winter months.

The Thorncrown Chapel is a 48-foot-tall wooden structure and a stunning place of worship and spirituality. This forested retreat has 425 windows and 6,000 square feet of glass. Designed by noted architect E. Fay Jones, the chapel hosts public Sunday Services between April and December and is available for weddings throughout the year. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a sanctuary for big cats and other large animals. It's home to abandoned, abused, and neglected tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars, as well as bears and bobcats.

Visitors to the refuge have many ways to interact with the resident animals and learn more about their species. Guided habitat tours happen daily, and exclusive behind-the-scenes tours occur on the weekends.

The wildlife refuge also hosts numerous special events throughout the year, which help fund Turpentine's efforts, like festivals and educational programming. The refuge also provides lodging options, including a family-friendly treehouse and an adults-only safari lodge.

It is hard to miss the Christ of the Ozarks, which is one of the most notable attractions in Eureka Springs. The monument stands 67 feet tall on Magnetic Mountain , and it can be seen from almost anywhere in town. The Christ of the Ozarks has been a fixture in Eureka Springs for more than 50 years, and it is worth seeing up close while you are in town.

There is free parking in the complex near the statue and pedestrian paths that lead to the base of it and below for various vantage points. Walk around the statue to see its 65-foot arm span, and learn about the efforts that it took to create it in 1966.

The foundation is made from 340 tons of concrete, with steel welded directly into the rock of Magnetic Mountain, and it weighs over 2,000,000 pounds. It is easy to continue your visit with a walk on the grounds to experience the other buildings and points of interest, including a section of the Berlin Wall that is on display to the public.

The Great Passion Play brings to life the epic drama surrounding Christ's death and resurrection. The play is performed in an outdoor amphitheater surrounded by luscious landscaping. The production is based on the Old Testament prophecies and New Testament accounts of the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth before and including His ascension.

Numerous performances occur throughout the year, ensuring ample opportunity to catch this Christian attraction comprising a multi-level stage, live animals, and 150 trained actors. The Great Passion Play's typical season spans from Memorial Day through October. Performances take place in the evening.

Beaver Lake is one of the best recreational lakes in the area, with more than 480 miles of shoreline. The scenic limestone cliffs, wide lake, forestland, and caves make for a great day outdoors, whether you are enjoying it from a boat or from a picnic bench in one of the public areas.

The St. Elizabeth Catholic Church is an inspiring landmark of Eureka Springs. It's over a century old and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The walkway leading to St. Elizabeth Church is lined with the Stations of the Cross, and a small prayer garden can be found at the side of the building. Visitors enter the church through a charming bell tower.

You cannot visit Eureka Springs without soaking in some of the natural beauty that the area is known for and the natural springs bubbling in the pristine Ozarks environment. Within this depot-turned-museum, visitors encounter a collection of vintage rolling stock, a restored turntable, handcar, and an automobile outfitted to run on the rails.

The real experience of visiting the depot comes from the daily scheduled rides and the chance to hop aboard the historic line. Quigley's Castle is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and noted as the "the Ozark's strangest dwelling." It was the dream home of Elise Quigley, an Italian immigrant with a passion for gardening. Perennial gardens surround the home, with lovely paths, benches, and other features.

Inside the home are full-size tropical plants and trees, growing from natural ground soil on the first floor. And on display within the home are several unique collections, including butterflies, crystals, fossils, glassware, and arrowheads.

Quigley's Castle is open from March through November. Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of this quaint and memorable residence. Tours take place both inside and outside among the beautifully landscaped gardens. Children under 14 years old receive free admission.

Comprised of beautiful gardens, local history, and a large natural spring, Blue Springs Heritage Center has been a popular tourist attraction for over 70 years. Prior to attracting tourists and Eureka Springs residents, the spring was considered a sacred space for local and traveling American Indian tribes.

Today, it's a popular family destination and a great place to enjoy the Ozark outdoors. The history of Blue Spring is on full display with every visit. Artifacts and exhibits are interspersed throughout the park, including the remnants of an old mill that was once powered by the moving water.

First discovered in 1891 and hosting tours since 1893, the Onyx Cave is just a short drive east of Eureka Springs. It offers a family-friendly opportunity to see some amazing cave features and wildlife. The cave is small, and visitors can walk through it with relative ease on a self-guided audio tour that takes about a half hour or less.

Onyx Cave also hosts a popular Gem Panning station outside the cave, which entices both children and adults. My family visited Eureka Springs in the early 1990’s. Two of the highlights were Thorncrown Chapel and the outdoor Passion Play—both very memorable. I can tell from your delightful visitors Internet site, we missed a lot & could have stayed much longer! There was no mention of the unique setting & presentation of the wonderful Passion Play & I’m wondering if it’s still performed? A Quick History Of Eureka Springs

Eureka Springs was founded and named on July 4, 1879. The town was originally a site in the legends of the Native Americans that roamed this land.

The tribes told of the healing waters in the mountains. The waters of Basin Spring drew visitors from all over to enjoy the healing waters of the mountain town.

People flocked to the area when words of the healing waters continued to spread. They built tent cities all over the area to partake in the waters of the hot springs.

The city then quickly developed, and investors took note of the city’s success. They then formed the Eureka Springs Improvement Company in 1882. This improvement company brought the railroad and other amenities to the city to meet the growing population.

The historic town center and the Crescent Hotel soon followed suit. The city of Eureka Springs was built in two short years, and many of the buildings still exist today.

This exciting history landed the entire town of Eureka Springs on the National Registry of Historic Places.

Today you can still see this throughout the town when you see the Crescent Hotel, the Basin Park Hotel, and the Bath Houses.

Historic Downtown Eureka Springs, Arkansas

A great place to start your visit to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is to visit the historic district in downtown Eureka Springs .

Lined with buildings boasting gorgeous Victorian Architecture, Spring and Main Street are the perfect streets to get a feel for the historic district.

Eclectic boutique shops will carry everything from unique housewares to clothing items.

Be sure to check out Basin Spring Park during your time downtown.

Basin Spring Park is located next to the historic Basin Spring Hotel. Basin Spring Park is home to the original spring in Eureka Springs that Native Americans and pioneer settlers used.

If you’re lucky, live music will be played in the historic bandshell located in Basin Spring Park during your visit.

Of course, the downtown Eureka Springs area is also home to some great restaurants, art galleries, and evening entertainment options.

Marvel At Thorncrown Chapel

The Thorncrown Chapel is a gorgeous 48-foot-tall chapel tucked away in the woods of the Ozark Mountains.

Thorncrown Chapel is an architecturally unique chapel that has won multiple awards and draws millions of visitors to its doors annually.

When you visit Thorncrown Chapel, you will immediately see why!

Thorncrown Chapel features 6,000 square feet of glass, 425 windows, and 100 tons of native stone and flagstone.

The natural light through the windows mesmerizes visitors inside, while the abundance of glass makes you feel as if the Ozark forest is engulfing you.

Designed by architect E. Fay Jones, Thorncrown hosts public services on Sundays between April and December. You can also rent the chapel for weddings throughout the year; book early, as this chapel is in high demand!

You can visit Thorncrown Chapel daily between April and November, and have some limited hours in March and December.

Visit the Great Passion Play

The Great Passion Play is a Christian-based production that brings to life the Old Testament prophecies and the New Testament accounts of the last seven days of Jesus of Nazareth.

The Great Passion Play depicts accounts surrounding Christ’s death and resurrection.

Occurring several times throughout the year, the Great Passion Play can be seen from Memorial Day to October.

The Great Passion Play employs over 150 actors and uses live animals on a multi-level stage to truly immerse the audience in the experience.

During your time here, explore Passion Play Rd to see the other attractions this area has to offer.

There is a vast monument called the Christ of the Ozarks. The Christ of the Ozarks monument is a larger-than-life statue of Christ on the side of the Ozark Mountains.

Visitors can also take the Holy Land tour offered on-site, which includes a replica of the Eastern Gate in Jerusalem and a recreated Marketplace.

On-site, you can also enjoy a Noah’s Ark petting zoo, a museum, and mountain biking trails.

See Quigley’s Castle

If you want to see a unique dwelling during your visit to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, then you want to visit Quigley’s Castle.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Quigley’s Castle was built as the dream home for Elise Quigley.

Elise’s love for gardening is apparent when you visit the house. Not only will you see plants and flowers outdoors, but you will also notice that full-size trees are growing inside the house.

There are also several exciting collections on-site for you to view. These include a collection of fossils, arrowheads, and butterflies.

Visitors are welcome to take a self-guided tour of the home from March through November.

Make Friends With Big Cats

One of the unique things to do in Eureka Springs, AR, is to pay a visit to Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge.

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a rescue operation for large animals, including big cats.

In addition to the big cats, which include tigers, leopards, lions, bobcats, and cougars, Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge also houses bears.

The refuge offers guided tours daily and special behind-the-scenes tours on the weekends. This allows visitors to learn more about the big cats and the rehab efforts of Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge.

If you are inclined, you can even stay on the property in one of their treehouses or adults-only safari lodge.

Tour Onyx Cave Park

Head east of Eureka Springs, AR, and you will find Onyx Cave Park, a cave opened to visitors to tour.

Onyx Cave Park has welcomed visitors since 1893 to the small cave on site. Visitors can take a self-guided tour of Onyx cave to see the cave’s features and the wildlife inside.

You can try panning at the Gem Panning station before finding the perfect souvenir in the on-site gift shop during your visit to Onyx Cave.

Visit a Winery

Wine enthusiasts will be happy to know that you can visit a winery in Eureka Springs.

Keels Creek Winery is a boutique winery that allows visitors to try their delicious wines made from locally harvested grapes.

Here you can do a wine tasting of their red, white, blush, and dessert wines. Their tasting room is perfect for finding a new wine you love.

Surrounded by artwork from local artists, the Keels Creek Winery is a great spot to enjoy some local wine and support local artists.

Pivot Rock and Natural Bridge

Pivot Rock Park was naturally produced over 100 years ago.

Walking along the pathways, you can look for two of the park’s most interesting features, Pivot Rock and Natural Bridge.

Ask the locals, and they will tell you that this park was once used as a hideout for outlaw Jesse James!

Visit The Crescent Hotel

Even if you aren’t staying at the Crescent Hotel, you should still visit this 1886 historic hotel.

Sitting on the hilltop above the historic district, the Crescent Hotel is one of the shining jewels of Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

The Crescent Hotel offers numerous activities for guests and visitors to enjoy. These range from haunted tours to spa treatments.

A great ghost tour takes place after dark in the hotel that tells you all about the spirits that haunt these historic halls.

Learn Local History at the Eureka Springs Historical Museum

You will find the Eureka Springs Historical Museum in the Eureka Springs historic district inside the historic 1889 Calif Building.

Ride a Train

If you want to experience what it was like when the rail service arrived in Eureka Springs in 1883, pay a visit to the Eureka Springs and North Arkansas Railway Company.

The historic rail line allows visitors to hop aboard the historic line daily. The train rides include a sightseeing ride, lunch, and dinner excursion.

These seasonal journeys are available from April through October.

Beaver Lake

This lake is located a few miles from Eureka Springs in the Ozark Mountains.

One of the main draws of this lake is the 487 miles of scenic shoreline that the lake offers. This is the perfect area to enjoy a relaxing day on the lake.

Beaver Lake offers numerous recreational opportunities. Scuba divers love the crystal clear water, and photographers will be in heaven with the dramatic limestone cliffs and wildlife found around the lake.

Lake Leatherwood City Park

Located on the north side of Eureka Springs, Lake Leatherwood is a 100-acre lake located on the property of a 1,600-acre park.

Lake Leatherwood is one of the great places to visit to enjoy outdoor recreation. The family-friendly activities on this lake include boating, canoeing, fishing, and kayaking.

You can also spend the day enjoying hiking, running, or biking on the trails of the park.

Numerous structures were also located on site built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. These buildings allow Lake Leatherwood to be listed as a historic district in Eureka Spring, Arkansas.

St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church

Another building listed on the National Register of Historic Places, St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, is a beautiful church located near the downtown historic district.

The church is famous for its Bell Tower and the gorgeous architecture of the building.

The grounds of the church are perfect for taking some outdoor photographs, thanks to flora and fauna in the area.

You can also visit the church to see the Bell Tower and the stained glass windows. Take time to do the self-guided tour of the church and visit the on-site gift shop to view the religious items and jewelry for sale.

Holiday Island Marina

Those of you visiting during the warm months of the year won’t want to miss some time out on the water. That is where a visit to Holiday Island Marina comes in handy.

This marina allows visitors to enjoy renting a watercraft so that guests can get out on the water.

The marina on Table Rock Lake offers all sorts of watercraft rentals. These include jet skis, pontoon boats, and more.

Holiday Island Marian also offers an on-site snack bar serving everything from ice cream to pizza.

Holiday Island Marina has everything you need for a fun and safe day out on the lake.

They even offer life vests, fishing equipment, and anything else you need.

Another of our favorite tours in Eureka Springs is the ghost tour the Crescent Hotel offers.

The Crescent Hotel’s tumultuous history only adds to the intrigue of this tour.

Originally built as a luxury resort for the rich visiting Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in the late 1800s, the hotel later changed owners numerous times.

The Crescent Hotel even served as The Baker Cancer Hospital in the early 1900s, meaning the building had several people pass away on site.

A hotel ghost tour introduces guests to the spirits that haunt the hotel. You never know; you have had an encounter of your own during the tour!

This is one of the unique attractions in the Eureka Springs downtown district.

Inspiration Point is an incredible scenic overlook in Eureka Springs, Arkansas.

This is the perfect place to enjoy a picnic, take a gorgeous picture, or enjoy some time outdoors in nature.

Here you can see the White River and views of the valley 500 feet below. This is the perfect place to visit any time of year, allowing you to see the gorgeous Ozark Mountain scenery.

If you can visit during the fall, you will be treated to the changing of the gorgeous fall foliage. It is such a treat to see the beautiful colors of orange, red, and yellow as the trees begin shedding their leaves for winter.

You will want to bring your camera when you visit Inspiration Point, as the view from this vantage point is fabulous.

Aviation Cadet Museum

A visit to the Aviation Cadet Museum is another great thing for history buffs to enjoy during their visit to Eureka Springs.

The museum is dedicated to sharing and honoring our military’s aviation accomplishments.

Kids (and kids at heart) will love the hands-on exhibits throughout the museum that allow you to get up close and personal with history.

Some noteworthy items on exhibit at the Aviation Cadet Museum include historical planes, a fighter bomber used in the Vietnam War, and a T-29 training plane.

This museum is a great attraction for lovers of aviation, history, and flight.

Thorncrown chapel.

Located just 5 miles Northwest of Eureka Springs, Thorncrown Chapel is one of the best things to do in Eureka Springs!

The church was designed by Arkansan architect E. Fay Jones who was a protege of famous architect Frank Lloyd-Wright. The design was made to compliment the natural surroundings making it a woodland sanctuary perfect for all practitioners and travelers!

As one of the really unique things to do in Eureka Springs, the building itself stands at 48 feet tall and features a grand total of 425 windows! It was commissioned by Jim Reed who wanted to share the beautiful views of Arkansas with the Ozark visitors! Officially opening in 1980, this nondenominational church has seen more than 7 million visitors!

Admission to Thorncrown Chapel is free, so this is definitely one of the great options for free things to do in Eureka Springs, but they accept donations if you’re feeling generous! It is regularly booked for weddings so it’s afternoon hours are varied, but it is accessible for visitation from March to November with Sunday Services from April to December! It’s closed during January and February! Don’t forget to take pictures in this awesome structure!

Beaver Lake

Beaker Lake is a perfect option for what to do in Eureka Springs if you’re looking for somewhere to enjoy the great outdoors!

It is an artificial reservoir that was created in the 1960’s by damming the White River and holds 28,000 acres of water! This is definitely one of the fun things to do in Eureka Springs if you’re looking to enjoy the best outdoor activities! There are tons of great scenic places to stop at for some memorable hikes and swim in gorgeous blue waters!

There are a lot of picnic tables and boat launches in the area! If you’re a cold water fishing fanatic, this is also a great spot for you! This is a very popular spot for other cold water fishers so definitely don’t skip Beaver Lake!

Crescent Hotel Ghost Tour

This haunted tour is definitely one of the best activities in Eureka Springs that you cannot miss out on!

It was built in 1886 and made to be the Crescent Hotel and Spa! It’s on the list of America’s Most Haunted Hotels, so if you’re a nut for the supernatural and need to feel the presence of ghosts this is definitely one of the best Eureka Springs activities for you! The hotel opened in the late 19th century and mixes French Renaissance and Richardson Romanesque architectural design!

The Tour guides lead in period clothing as they share stories of the Crescent Hotel and Spa’s history and walking you through the most haunted halls and rooms that the hotel has to offer. There are two tours, one for adults because it can get scarier and one that’s okay for children as well. Prices range from 15 to 27.50 depending on age!

Come check out the Crescent Hotel Ghost Tour where you can feel the presence of ghosts who have haunted these hallowed halls for years! Ghosts including that of the stonemason who fell to his death during construction and a four-year-old who died during construction and even the hotel cat who was buried on the property!

Christ of the Ozarks

Christ of the Ozarks is definitely one fo the interesting things to do in Eureka Springs that you should make the effort to see.

It is a 65.5 foot (20m) statue of Jesus Christ that stands with his arms spread wide as if he were on the cross but without the physical cross, this is similar to Christ the Redeemer in Brazil and Christ the King in Poland! It is the work of Emmet Sullivan who worked on Arkansas Dinosaur World and assisted in the work at Mount Rushmore! This is definitely one of the attractions in Eureka Springs that you should consider!

There is no cost of admission to see Christ of the Ozarks so this is definitely one of the free things to do in Eureka Springs that you shouldn’t skip!

Mineral Springs

Eureka Springs gets it’s name from the 66 cold mineral springs that are encompassed in the town! You can’t visit the town without making an effort to see these unique places to visit in Eureka Springs!

These springs are historically thought to have healing powers and they are scattered throughout the city parks and gardens that were established to preserve them! Springs include Basin Spring which feeds a fountain in Basin Spring Park, Crescent Spring known for its Victoria gazebo and rock walls, and the Sweet Spring which is set amongst gorgeous flowers in the park!

St. Elizabeth Catholic Church

Adjacent to the Crescent Hotel, the St Elizabeth Catholic Church is another architectural marvel that resides in Eureka Springs!

It’s architecture was inspired by the beautiful Hagia Sophia in Instanbul, and has several mentions in the Ripley’s Believe It Or Not publications due to it’s unique features! It’s singular entrance is through it’s bell tower, it has unique marble surfaces on its interior and pink-tinted ceilings! This with it’s gorgeous chandelier made with thousands of little crystals give it a very aesthetic and ethereal internal vibe to the auditorium!

Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down Music Theatre

The Ozark Mountain Hoe-Down Music Theatre is one of the best things to do in Eureka Springs at night!

It is a nightly variety show at a theatre on the east side of Eureka Springs! It’s be running for 40 years and features a must-see combination of country and gospel musical numbers and family-friendly comedy skits!

If you’re looking for ‘date night’ things to do in Eureka Springs for couples this is a great option! Shows run four nights a week with admission ranging between 10 to 35 dollars a ticket! They are active from April to November and make sure to buy your tickets in advance!

Eureka Springs Historical Museum

The Eureka Springs Historical Museum is housed in a beautiful three-story Victorian-era home that shows just how beautiful the town’s architectural legacy is. It was built in 1889 and is perfectly suited to a historical museum making it one of the best things to do in Eureka Springs

This museum shows off the evolution of Eureka Springs and covers significant historical events such as the mineral springs being discovered to when Eureka Springs was established as an artists paradise!

The museum houses more than 10,000 artifacts including instruments, travel memorabilia and photographs! This is a year round museum with a five dollar admission making it one of the cheap places to visit in Eureka Springs!

Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

Just 10 miles south of Eureka Springs Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is a fun option for things to do near Eureka Springs!

This is a family-run nonprofit founded in the late 1970’s when three members of the Jackson family who took in an 8-month-old lion cub who was chained to a tree! This feline-focused habitat houses close to 100 rescued animals with an emphasis on tigers, lions, cougars and leopards! It is a home for animals in need, they do not offer tours to touch or feed the animals, but their tours are educational and the staff knows a lot about the cats they house!

Entry fee between 15 to 32 dollars includes an hourlong tour on a tram and wandering freely with a self-guided discovery area! This refuge also has on-site accommodation so you can make experience feel like a safari making this one of the unique things to do in Eureka Springs!

Onyx Cave Park

Next on our list of the best things to do in Eureka Springs is Onyx Cave Park!

This activity is perfect for those wilderness adventurers who want to discover the deep (or shallow) underbellies of the earth! Being less than 10 miles from this small town, this is definitely one of the things to do near Eureka Springs that you will never forget!

Onyx Cave Parks is a cave with layered rock formations made of natural flowstone! Flowstone is formed from minerals left behind from flowing water which is what gives it such cool and unique texture! Entrance is a very low fee from 3 to 7.50 with age requirements! Visitors can take a self-guided tour through the cave with headphones giving details, but there are activities such as axe throwing and gem panning nearby!

There is no requirement for cave-equipment because it’s an easy trek inside but take a sweater or jacket because it can get chilly inside!

Intrigue Theatre

Intrigue Theatre is another great options for things to do in Eureka Springs at night!

Intrigue Theatre is a combination of illusionist, medium and church-like theatre building that features gorgeous stained-glass windows, vaulted ceilings and amazing entertainment to keep everyone having fun!

The theatre is headed by the dynamic duo of Illusionist Sean-Paul and private investigator turned clairvoyant Juliana Fay! The pair has toured everywhere together from the USS Oklahoma Submarine to the main stages of America’s Got Talent so you know they know how to put on a show!

This awesome option for things to do at night in Eureka Springs has shows five times a week and has an audience cap of 100 people due to theatre space! Their shows have great range of content from levitation to comedy sketches to other magic tricks that make it an amazing and entertaining event! Make sure to get your ticket in advance!

Quigley’s Castle

Quigley’s Castle is a unique destination that you shouldn’t miss!

It is Ozark’s strongest building as is the result of a nature-loving woman named Elise Quigley who demolished the previous house while her husband was away at work so he wouldn’t have any other choice but to help her build her dream home! What a woman! The house was designed to hold the maximum amount of greenery possible, it’s got such a great vibe you cannot miss out on this amazing place to see!

Quigley’s Castle features large gaps in between the flooring and the walls for plants to be placed, they stretch all the way to the study now! This house is an accumulation of an eclectic collection of plants and natural objects and integrate them into the houses structure! Elise collected until her passing in the 80’s.

The house is now managed by her grandchildren and is open from April to October every year! Check out this houses unique architecture and historical markers, don’t miss out on one of the best places to visit in Eureka Springs!

Underground Eureka Walking Tour

The Underground Eureka Walking Tour gives you a new perspective on the history and folklore of one of the most fascinating cities in Arkansas!

The tour is 17.50 for anyone over the age of 12, anyone 12 and under is free with a paid adult ticket! The tour discusses the origins of the healing waters and the sacred Indian Spring, as well as teaching about the people who have passed through such as Alva Jackson and Norman Baler, and the Starr gang and bank robbers!

As one of the unique things to do in Eureka Springs this is perfect for people who are okay going underground and (maybe) seeing some spookiness! It is a 75 minute tour and does not promise ghosts but anything underground can give off that vibe! Don’t miss out on the historical character’s coming to life and spilling the secrets of Eureka Springs!

War Eagle Cavern

If you’re looking for another of the outdoor things to do in Eureka Springs, War Eagle Cavern is a great option!

It is stroller and handicap accessible and has pet-friendly tours available! It has beautiful nature trails and lake views with unique activities for the whole family to try! There are guided tours available for different skill levels, the first only goes a little bit into the cave and along the edge of the stream so you have the option to take children. There is another portion of the cave that needs more experienced equipment but there are guides for this as well!

As one of the best activities in Eureka Springs, War Eagle Cavern has admission available from 12 to 35 dollars a person and depending on your tour! It’s home to bats and salamanders so keep an eye out!

Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway

Last but not least, The Eureka Springs and North Arkansas Railway is a perfect option for things to in Eureka Springs for couples!

The track is a unique excursion train that takes you on a scenic 45-mile ride into the Ozarks on a vintage 1940’s era diesel engine locomotive! This is one of the many unique things to do in Eureka Springs that you definitely should be looking into. Tickets range from around 43.50 but there are different tour programs so look into what interests you!

There is a lunch and dinner train service available in the 1920’s style dining car, both come with a full meal service! Children under 5 cannot take the dinner train but are welcome on the lunch trip!

This excursion train is an hourlong and features great commentary from the on-board conductor! It operates from May to October so don’t miss out on one of the best things to do in Eureka Springs!

Eureka Springs, Arkansas, is a charming town in the Ozark Mountains, perfect for a weekend getaway. With beautiful scenery and a quaint, historic downtown, it’s no wonder that this town is a popular tourist destination.

Eureka Springs is an excellent destination with lots of history, natural beauty, and exciting activities. My husband and I visited in the fall and found plenty of things to do in this small town, and you can easily walk to most of the attractions. Here’s how to make the most of your time in Eureka Springs.

We were provided lodging and some meals and activities during our visit to Eureka Springs. All opinions are my own.

Things To Do In Eureka Springs

1. take the eureka springs tram tour.

Get an overview of the town and its history on the narrated tram tour . The tour takes you past hundreds of old homes and historic buildings. You will also see the healing springs that date back to the late 1800s and made Eureka Springs famous. Lasting approximately 90 minutes, the tram tour is a great way to become familiar with different things in the town and figure out what you want to revisit.

Another option is the trolley. It stops at various locations throughout town, and is an easy and inexpensive way to get around the area if you don’t want to walk.

2. Admire The Architecture

Various styles of architecture, from “Gothic Revival” to “Queen Anne,” are sprinkled throughout the town. Architectural Digest reports Eureka Springs is recognized as having one of “the largest collection of unspoiled Victorian houses in the central United States.” 

During your tram tour, or while walking around the historic district, take time to admire the beautiful architecture and feel like you are taking a few steps back in time.

3. View The Art

There are numerous art galleries in the small town of Eureka Springs. As you explore the town, be sure to stop in and check out the local works of art. 

4. Shop Unique Boutiques

Shop ‘til you drop at one of the many unique boutiques in downtown Eureka Springs. You can find plenty of souvenirs in the charming and quirky shops lining the district’s sloping streets. You will find stores selling unique foods, soaps, socks, sweets, and various other items.

We spent an afternoon shopping. My favorite stores were the sock store, the nut house, and the soap stores.

5. See The Christ Of The Ozarks Statue

A modern statue of Jesus stands 65.5 feet tall on Magnetic Mountain and looks down on the town and surrounding area of Eureka Springs. The statue and the view of the town and countryside are stunning when you visit Christ of the Ozarks .

6. Watch The Great Passion Play

The Great Passion Play is offered near the Christ of the Ozarks Statue from the spring season through the fall season. It is “America’s #1 Attended Outdoor Drama,” according to the Institute of Outdoor Theater and Drama at East Carolina University at Greenville.

Hosted in an outdoor amphitheater, it features a multi-level set, live animals, special lighting and sound effects, and over 100 biblically-costumed cast members create the thrilling and epic drama of Jesus Christ’s last days on earth.

7. Visit Thorncrown Chapel

Noted as one of the most beautiful chapels in America, Thorncrown Chapel is a remarkable structure just 3 miles from downtown Eureka Springs. The Chapel is 48 feet tall, standing amongst the trees in the woods. A true sight to behold, the structure consists of 6,000 square feet of glass and is one of America’s most photographed buildings.

8. Ride The Train

Ride the scenic Eureka Springs and Northwest Arkansas Railway through the Ozark Mountains . The Excursion Train is narrated and takes you on an hour ride, or ride in the Eurekan Dining Car to taste recipes from 100 years ago on the 2-hour trip. It is another chance to go back in time to when locomotive transportation was king.

Pro Tip: It’s only available April through early October.

9. Explore The Caves

The Onyx Cave is Arkansas’s oldest Show Cave. Onyx is a small cave located 6 miles east of Eureka Springs. You can enjoy this mysterious cave at your own pace with a headset that provides a self-guided tour.

Located near Beaver Lake, War Eagle Cavern is a seasonal attraction offering cave tours, a children’s maze, and gem panning. If you are the adventurous type, they also offer spelunking tours.

Speaking of the underground, consider taking an Underground Eureka Springs tour to learn the hidden secrets of downtown Eureka Springs. 

10. Visit Eureka Springs Historical Museum

Learn how Eureka Springs became a Victorian health spa and so much more. The Eureka Springs Historical Museum will educate and entertain with various permanent and temporary exhibits.

11. Check Out The Views From Inspiration Point Overlook

Gorgeous panoramic vistas can be found all over Eureka Springs, but the view from Inspiration Point Overlook is absolutely spectacular. A cliff sitting 550 feet above the White River provides breathtaking views of the Ozark landscape.  

12. Explore Beaver Lake

A 32,000-acre water playground, Beaver Lake, located approximately 30 miles west of downtown Eureka Springs, is the perfect place to bike, hike, swim, dive, fish, paddle, boat, and more.   

13. Take A Ghost Tour

Ghost tours are offered at various hotels across the town. We stayed at the Crescent Hotel and participated in an evening ghost tour within the hotel when we visited. It was a fun way to learn the spooky history of the hotel and the ghosts who supposedly roam the halls. (I did not see or feel any spirits while there.)  

The tour was fascinating and educational. We were there two nights before Halloween, so a great time to enjoy some ghost stories. It is a must-do activity when visiting Eureka Springs.

The Basin Hotel is also thought to be haunted and hosts “Paranormal Investigations.”

Pro Tip: The whole town celebrates Halloween. Every place is decorated. Halloween weekend is one of their busiest times. So if you plan to visit near the holiday, be sure to make your reservations far in advance.

14. Visit The Springs

The town became famous because of its springs. The natural springs are said to have healing properties. Although they are cold springs, they are thought to be therapeutic, and the water is heated for use in the spas located throughout the town. Basin Spring Park is where the original spring is located. It also features benches to sit and relax.

15. Go Mountain Biking

Some of the state’s best mountain biking trails can be found in Eureka Springs. There are a variety of trails for all skill levels. Many of the trails are downhill and provide shuttle services back up the mountain.  

16. Visit The Spas

Don’t miss the opportunity to enjoy a massage or soak in a tub of water thought to have healing benefits. The famous spring water is pumped throughout the town. It is heated and used in various spas for therapeutic benefits. I visited the New Moon Spa at the Crescent Hotel when I was in Eureka Springs. The Basin Hotel has a 1905 Spa , and the old Palace Hotel is now a hotel and bathhouse with spa facilities.

17. rogue’s manor restaurant and lodging.

Located on Spring Street near the historic Sweet Spring, Rogue’s Manor features fine dining and a unique lounge. Lots of locals were eating and drinking there when we visited.

We enjoyed a special intimate dinner at Rogue’s Manor. I ordered the pork tenderloin with a sweet apple relish. It was so tender and delicious. The food and service were excellent.

18. Crystal Dining Room

We enjoyed breakfast at the Crystal Dining Room in the 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa. They were only open for breakfast and weekend evenings when we visited due to COVID-19 issues. But I’m told they are open for both breakfast and dinner now.

19. 1886 crescent hotel & spa.

This historic hotel is located on a hill above downtown and offers beautiful views of the Ozark Mountains. It looks like a hotel out of a movie or fairy tale as you drive up the mountain. It has been featured in a few films and TV shows. 

The 1886 Crescent Hotel & Spa is supposedly haunted, which is a big draw for many. They offer ghost tours and a variety of activities for all ages at the hotel. We stayed at the Crescent Hotel when we visited Eureka Springs.

20. The Basin Park Hotel 

The 1905 Basin Park Hotel is in a prime downtown location. Guests can walk to the cafes, bistros, galleries, shops, and night spots. The Hotel features the Balcony Bar and Restaurant with views of Spring Street and Basin Spring Park.  

21. Oak Crest Cottages & Treehouses

You might enjoy the Oak Crest Cottages & Treehouses for a unique stay. It’s located a short drive from the historic shopping district and only minutes from the Passion Play.

There are dozens of bed and breakfasts scattered throughout the town.

12. Lake Leatherwood

This man-made lake was born in the 1940s when a limestone dam was built to store the large amounts of natural spring water that feeds into the reserve. It is still one of the largest hand-cut limestone dams in the US!

The lake is surrounded by acres of beautiful woodland that you can visit on foot or by bike. There are over 25 miles of trails, with a variety of terrains, that you can explore during your visit.

If the water looks enticing, you can also go kayaking or canoeing on the lake or stand on the lake’s edge and do some fishing. The nature, solitude, and adventures offered by Lake Leatherwood make it a must-visit during your holiday.

11. Onyx Cave Park

This is an ideal stop-off for visitors who have always wanted to explore underground caves, but aren’t looking to spend hours in the cool, damp, dark environment within. The Onyx Cave Park is home to a small network of underground caves that take about half an hour to explore.

You’ll get to see the incredible geographical formations within the caves that continue to grow and change throughout the years! Once you get cold and tire of the musky smell below, you can come up and try your hand at axe throwing or go wild in one of the Onyx Smashing Rooms.

After all your adventures at Onyx Cave are done you can head over to their shop and buy some unique souvenirs, like natural crystals, to take home.

10. Basin Spring Park

This small Park in the center of the town is a place of historical significance and legend. The natural spring, Basin Spring, that trickles away beneath the park was an important healing spring that was honored and used by Native Americans who lived on the land of Eureka Springs.

The spring attracted visitors who came with the promise of having their wounds healed and being cured of diseases by the spring’s water. It later became the center of the town as plans were made in the late 1800s to build homes and streets around the Basin Spring.

You can stop for a rest in between activities at the small park, catch your breath, and soak in the impressive history of this little spring before continuing your holiday adventures.

9. Christ of the Ozarks

This large, imposing religious statue was erected in 1966 above the town. The statue of Christ is the village’s own Christ the Redeemer. Though it’s smaller than Rio’s version, the Christ still stands 67 feet high!

The statue is on top of the nearby Magnetic Mountain, at some 1,500 feet of altitude. It’s one of the town’s most visited attractions. Each year hundreds of tourists climb the steep hill up to the statue, and marvel at its size.

Another interesting fact to spark your curiosity – the statue was built using 340 tons of concrete! A short walk from the town, the Christ of the Ozarks is a must-see on your visit.

8. Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge

Eureka has its very own exotic rescue center, the Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge. The refuge has a variety of species of big cats within its walls. If you’ve always wanted to see one of these impressive animals but you had ethical concerns, this is a great way to do it!

The wildlife refuge provides a loving home for big cats that have been abandoned, abused, or neglected by their previous owners. You’ll see tigers, lions, leopards, and cougars on your visit.

The refuge is a great opportunity to get up close to these extraordinary animals and learn about how they are cared for. A fun and educational day out for the whole family!

7. Quigley’s Castle

Quigley’s Castle was built by the Quigley family in the 1940s. This strange home is a one-of-a-kind, and its history is even more peculiar! Mrs. Quigley moved to the states from Italy as a young girl and grew up in the local area. She later happily married and had children in town.

But, she wasn’t satisfied with the home they lived in. So, when her husband went to work one day, she and her children tore it down and moved into the chicken coop! Now she could get to work building the home of her dreams, Quigley’s Castle.

The building’s design and interior haven’t changed since Mrs. Quigley passed away, and the gardens and home all reflect her love of nature. There’s lots to explore in this unique house and its beautiful gardens!

6. Eureka Springs & North Arkansas Railway

This unique museum and its attractions are a blast into the past, taking its visitors back into a time when the railway was the most effective and used way to get around the country. A must-see for train enthusiasts, curious engineers, and anyone looking to do something out of the ordinary.

You can put your mind to work contemplating the old steam locomotive exhibits and wonder at the 1940s diesel locomotive in action!

The Railway center also offers its visitors the chance to ride the 1940s locomotive and enjoy a 1920s themed meal whilst onboard. If you fancy riding an old train but aren’t looking for a meal, then you can hop on board a short excursion ride instead!

5. Blue Spring Heritage Center

This ancient land was once the home of the Cherokee, who found and were nurtured by the land during the Trail of Tears. The center has a rich history and areas of outstanding natural beauty for visitors to explore and contemplate.

A great day trip from the town, the Blue Spring Center has gardens full of native fauna and flora. There are lots of idyllic benches where you can stop and rest on your way around the winding paths that run through the grounds.

Another treasure of the Center is the Blue Spring. This natural spring pours 38 million gallons of freshwater into the center’s lagoon each day and it is a hotspot for native trout species.

4. Beaver Lake

This big, crystalline lake is a popular tourist destination for water sport lovers and all kinds of nature enthusiasts. Beaver Lake is surrounded by green forests and grassy meadows with lots of hiking trails zig-zaging through them.

It’s also an ideal place for bird watching, a gentle stroll around the lakeside, or a picturesque place to stop and read a book in the sun. You can also bring your fishing pole and try your hand at catching a bass!

If you want to get out onto the water you can boat, scuba dive, water ski, wakeboard, kayak, canoe, or go for a quick dip. You aren’t short on options at the Beaver Lake, no matter what your interests.

3. St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church

The St. Elizabeth Catholic Church is a small, picturesque church nestled among greenery and nature on a small hill in Eureka. The church was built in 1908 and replaced the original chapel that was previously visited by worshipers from the area.

The church was erected using dolomite limestone from local quarries, giving it a stone cottage appearance. The bell tower was constructed later, in 1910, adding to the church’s unique charm. The church underwent lots of remodeling after its construction, but the original structure still stands today.

Visitors can attend a daily mass at the church or walk around the church’s grounds and interior and admire its unique appearance. You can also get married in the church!

2. Eureka Springs Historical Downtown

Downtown Eureka is the town’s most lively area, full of locals and tourists enjoying the sun at a café in the morning and joining in the town’s bustling nightlife later on. The streets of Downtown Eureka are great for shopping, dining, and meeting new people.

During your visit you can take a Downtown Walking Tour to learn about the town’s unique history or sit peacefully and people-watch in Basin Spring Park, where it all began. If you head up to Spring Street, you can hop between art galleries and boutiques till your heart’s content.

From an awe-inspiring religious landmark that rises 65 feet into the Ozark sky to a network of dark, navigable caves, Eureka Springs offers a wildly eclectic array of photogenic places. The Flatiron Building

Right where Spring and Center streets split and form a “V” sits Eureka Springs’ very own flatiron building, one of the most photographed structures in Arkansas. That’s because Flatiron Flats , as it’s more formally known, is simply stunning to behold — an ornate blend of brick and concrete, with tall windows in the narrow front and wrought-iron balconies on the both sides. Flatiron Flats is home to four luxury suites, with boutique shops on the bottom floor. Spring Street slopes upward, while Center Street slopes downward, making for some very intriguing photo angles.

Humpty Dumpty on a Wall

A whimsical sculpture of Humpty Dumpty overlooks the intersection of Main and Spring streets. Yes, he’s sitting on a wall, a multi-tiered one made of stone. And, no, he won’t have a great fall — despite his slightly worried expression — because Humpty is anchored in place with rebar and cement. Created from a piece of solid white oak by Missouri chainsaw carver Keith Gregory, Humpty weighs 1,480 pounds and looks rather dapper in his blue, yellow and red ensemble. Unfortunately, you can’t take a selfie with Humpty, as he’s out of reach on private property. But he’s always happy to pose for shots from the street.

Rainbow Stairs

A long, steep set of stairs connects North Main and Center streets. In 2015, a group of artists and volunteers painted a swirling, colorful mural on it — based on the combined artwork of two members of the Eureka Springs High School Art Club. The trippy painting covers the entire length of the stairs. Have a seat for a quick and colorful selfie, or get more ambitious and shoot from multiple angles.

Crescent Hotel

You must visit this grand hotel that sits atop a hill overlooking downtown, offering photo-worthy views in every direction. The Crescent — which originally opened in 1886 and was restored and reopened in 2000 — sits on 15 acres of manicured gardens with hiking and biking trails that loop throughout. You’ll get the best photo ops if you lodge here, of course, but if not, you can dine at SkyBar Gourmet Pizza and snap pics of the vast green landscape in between bites and sips.

Spring Street at the New Orleans Hotel

Here’s an ideal spot to shoot a few pics and capture the ambience of our quaint and walkable downtown. The wrought-iron-draped New Orleans Hotel sits amid a cluster of shops and makes for particularly lovely night shots, when the buildings turn their exterior lights on. While you’re here, be sure to snap a few pics in the hotel’s lobby, with its rich wood floors, beautiful rugs and vintage furniture.

Diva of the Ozarks at Basin Spring Park

Shortly after Spring Street breaks north from South Main, you’ll encounter a small park with a bandshell that hosts regular live music (if you like to photograph bands, this place is for you). Just past the arc-shaped entrance, you’ll see a fountain and a statue — nice spots for selfies — but don’t miss the ornate sculpture of a mermaid-like figure wearing an elaborate crown and holding a staff. We call her the Diva of the Ozarks, and she’s ready for her closeup.

Palace Hotel & Bath House Spa

Built at the very beginning of the 20th Century in the style of a European castle, The Palace is allegedly a one-time brothel and getaway for W.C. Fields as well as mobsters (just picture them in their rakish fedoras). The hotel has been restored to its former glory and is on the National Historic Register. But the real photographic draw here is the sign, purported to be the first neon sign west of the Mississippi. It doesn’t take much imagination to recognize its…well, shape . We suggest posting it and letting your followers discover it on their own.

Lake Leatherwood City Park

You’ll run out of energy — or battery power — before you come close to exhausting the Instagram and selfie possibilities at this wonderful park, just five miles north of downtown. Roam the 1,600 acres, which include 25 miles of hiking trails, as well as mountain-biking courses. The park includes 85-acre, spring-fed Lake Leatherwood, and there are a lot of places to jump into the water (action shots anyone?) The property has a long bridge and a man-made waterfall. Best of all, this may be the only park in the country where you’re guaranteed to get a picture of Sasquatch. All you have to do is snap a selfie with the friendly Bigfoot sculpture that’s sitting on a bench collapsing under his weight.

Pivot Rock Park

About four miles north of downtown, you’ll find this classic roadside attraction that features an array of astounding rock formations. The main point of interest, the giant Pivot Rock, is shaped like an inverted pyramid. Make sure and pose like you’re holding it up over your head. Take a short hike along the pathways, where you’ll find large rock overhangs and other formations, and a natural stone bridge. Climb on (or under) for group shots. Browse the quaint gift shop, too. You’ll pay a nominal fee to enter the park.

Thorncrown Chapel

Nestled in the woods three miles northwest of downtown, Thorncrown Chapel is a true architectural marvel. The wooden structure rises 48 feet amid the trees, and contains 425 windows that house 6,000 square feet of glass. The building sits on more than a hundred tons of native stone and colored flagstone. Point your camera in any direction and you’ll get something well worth posting. Best, though, is shooting the chapel’s exterior from different angles. Thorncrown Chapel conducts Sunday services   (April through October) and is open for tours, except for January and February.

Christ of the Ozarks

This 65-foot-tall ivory modernist statue of Jesus can be seen from miles around. Stroll the sloped grounds and you’ll find countless cool angles to shoot this remarkable landmark. Photograph the statue from a distance or gather family and friends to take pictures of Jesus benevolently hovering behind you. He likes to pose for solo selfies, too.

Blue Spring Heritage Center

This attraction celebrates the ancient heritage of the Native Americans who inhabited the land and held important ceremonies here, as well as the breathtaking natural beauty of the Ozark region. Blue Springs Heritage Center, seven miles northwest of downtown, showcases an abundance of colorful gardens, more than a mile of trails, and ponds filled with brilliant blue spring waters that are rimmed with flowers. The Bluff Shelter, a huge rock overhang, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Incredibly beautiful, #nofilter needed.

Inspiration Point Overlook

You’ll be inspired, all right. The perfect spot to shoot sweeping panoramas of the gorgeous Ozark landscape (as well as the Crescent Hotel in the distance), Inspiration Overlook sits on a cliff 550 feet above the White River that serpentines through the valley below. This golden spot is just six miles northwest of downtown.

Beaver Bridge

Six miles north of downtown you’ll encounter this vintage, one-lane bridge that crosses the White River into the town of Beaver (population 100, give or take). Built in 1949, and added to the National Historic Register in 1990, it’s the only suspension bridge open to traffic in Arkansas. Walk the short hiking trail on the north side of the river and snap pics from an array of angles; or point and shoot as you cross the bridge in your vehicle.

A Little Farther Out

Cosmic cavern.

There are a lot of navigable caves in this neck of the Ozarks, and they all provide Instagrammable moments. Cosmic Cavern — 20 miles east of downtown — lives up to its name with some truly freaky (and colorful) rock formations and two lakes whose bottoms have never been discovered. Cosmic Cavern is especially inviting in the summer because it’s always 64 degrees. Tours last about an hour and 15 minutes.
