Red Dead Redemption 2 - the fast travel map in camp

Fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 takes on a few different forms. In this guide, we’ll teach you about them all.

Each one will prove useful in its own way as you travel the vast expanse of Red Dead Redemption 2 ’s world. After all, the scenic route — riding everywhere on Arthur Morgan’s horse — will get old eventually.

Stagecoaches and trains

Stagecoaches and trains are forms of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 , but they’ll cost you. Literally. For a fee, you can hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket.

The stagecoach icon on the Red Dead Redemption 2 map

Stagecoaches appear on the map as an icon that looks like two intersecting street signs. (It’s called a “taxi coach” in the menu that appears when you hover over it.) For a nominal fee that increases (as far as we can tell) based on distance from your current location, you can take a stagecoach to locations you’ve previously visited.

The post office icon for trains Red Dead Redemption 2

If you want to catch a train, you’ll need to buy a ticket. ( Unless you don’t .) You’d think you’d be looking for a train station, but you might also be looking for a building sitting next to a train track. In one town, Rhodes, what you’re actually looking for is the post office icon (which looks like an envelope). Talk to the clerk inside, and you can purchase a ride on a very Old West kind of transportation.

Actual fast travel

Traditional video game fast travel becomes available after you upgrade your lodgings at the Van der Linde Gang’s camp.

Head to the icon in camp that looks like a briefcase with a dollar sign on it. (It says “Donate to camp” when you hover over it on your map.) There are three upgrades to purchase on the lodging page. The second one, “Next in Line,” costs $325 and says that “Arthur wants a map to help plan journeys.” This is a reference to fast travel.

Red Dead Redemption 2 - the fast travel map in camp

Buy that upgrade, and you’ll find a map on the back of the stagecoach next to Arthur’s bed. Approach it and interact, and you’ll be able to travel to several destinations — a mixture of towns and significant locations like buildings.

Keep in mind that this form of fast travel only works one way — from camp to somewhere else. If you fast travel from camp to, say, a town on the opposite side of the map, you’ll either need to ride your horse, hire a stagecoach or buy a train ticket to get back.

How to fast travel Red Dead Redemption 2

In Red Dead Redemption 2 , you’ll likely find enjoyment in exploring the massive world it has to offer. After all, part of the fun is stumbling across little experiences that you’d miss if you were zipping around the map through fast travel menus. However, you are able to skip much of the exploration if you want by fast traveling — but you’ll need to make a few preparations before you’re able to do so. The game doesn’t explain much about this feature, though, since it wants you to enjoy everything in a slow and methodical way.

Fast traveling from your camp

Fast traveling from town to town.

This guide will walk you through what you need to know about fast traveling in the single-player component of RDR2 .

There are two methods of fast traveling in RDR2 . The first method of fast travel can be unlocked after Chapter 2. You’ll need to play through the main story missions and complete Money Lending and Other Sins. At this point, you’ll unlock the Ledger at your camp, which allows you to purchase items and upgrades to enhance the lives of Arthur and his fellow campers. At this point, make sure you purchase Dutch’s tent (First Things First) for $220, followed by Arthur’s wagon (Next in Line) for $325.

After this, you’ll find a map on the side of Arthur’s tent, allowing you to select various locations across the map to fast travel to. Doing so will result in Arthur taking a stagecoach to the locations around the map. The nice thing is that it’s free and your horse will come with you, making this a convenient and effective method to get around easily. You’ll need to have visited the area you want to fast travel to before it’ll appear as an option on the map.

The other way to fast travel involves taking a stagecoach from town to town. This method is similar to traveling from your camp, only it isn’t free. To use this method, approach one of the Stagecoach locations on your map — indicated by a signpost found in the main towns. When you approach, it’ll list all the locations you’ve visited, with various prices for each, depending on distance. After making a selection, you’ll get a short cut scene of the stagecoach taking off and arriving at your new destination. You can’t continuously fast travel using this method since there’s a short cool-down after you arrive at your destination. Sleep in a hotel to get the stagecoach to appear again if it’s giving you trouble.

There is no way to fast travel without using one of the two methods, meaning if you’re out in the wilderness, you’ll need to ride your horse or walk to the nearest fast-travel location. The game is designed to encourage you to explore, so you’ll want to fill in the map first before making good use of this feature. Once you’ve gone to all the locations on the map, you’ll likely be in the post-game section past the ending credits, so fast traveling will be a lot more essential at that point.

Like any other consoles, the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S aren't without issues. Even after several years on the market giving Microsoft time to push out updates and fixes, there are still some issues that can crop up.

In this guide, we're going to cover the most common Xbox Series X problems, as well as how to fix them, including:

Building up your character and being a team player is critical in Helldivers 2. A mission is doomed from the start if you only look out for yourself, but you might be overlooking an easy way to give yourself and your squad some extra support. Boosters are just one of the many ways to customize your trooper, but perhaps one of the most important.

These aren't handed out automatically, so if you don't know how to get them or, even more importantly, what they do, you are putting yourself at a needless disadvantage. We're here to train you on all the Boosters in Helldivers 2 and how to get and equip them for your next mission. All Boosters in Helldivers 2

The PlayStation 5 is a remarkable system, but it doesn't come with much storage space. Breaking from the 1TB the Xbox Series X offers, the PS5 only offers 825GB. Worse, after accounting for the storage space the PS5 takes up by default, users are left with just over 650GB of space. Thankfully, you can use external storage to expand your space, and in this guide, we're going to show you how to use an external hard drive on PS5. How to use an external HDD or SSD on PS5

Before you can use an external hard drive on PS5, you need to make sure it's compatible. It doesn't matter if your external drive is a hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD), you can use it on PS5 as long as it uses USB 3.0 or later. USB 2.0 external hard drives won't work. Because they won't work, you'll need to connect your external hard drive to one of the two USB-A ports on the back of the PS5. The USB-A port on the front is only rated for USB 2.0, so it won't work. Also, plug the drive directly into a console (don't use a USB hub or extension cable).

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel: How to unlock fast travel and other ways of travelling quickly

How to get around the world quickly with Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel is something you'll probably be asking about after your third or fourth long trek between destinations.

Though the game doesn't make a big song and dance about it, the good news is fast travel is in the game - though there is several caveats to how it works.

If you haven't unlocked fast travel yet, then there's other ways of getting round the map as well - allowing you to reach far-off destinations as soon as the game world opens up.

For more help, our Red Dead Redemption 2 walkthrough explains the requirements for fully completing the game's many story missions.

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Fast travel won't be available to you when you start Chapter 2, and has to be unlocked by progressing through the story, and then unlocking a few camp upgrades.

First, play through to mission Money Lending and Other Sins . Hand in your first debt, and you'll learn about the Ledger, allowing you to upgrade your camp .

You want to specifically upgrade Lodgings. Once you have upgraded it once, you'll have the option to upgrade Arthur's tent. Do so, and you'll unlock fast travel.

rdr2 pc fast travel

Of course, it isn't a simple case of selecting somewhere on the map and going there. You have to go to Arthur's tent - specifically, round the back - and view the map. Then, you select a location you've been to before, and you'll appear there, with your main horse , after a transition sequence.

What this means is, even with this unlocked, you cannot decide to jump from somewhere out in the wilderness to another destination - you still have to do that at a camp.

rdr2 pc fast travel

However, if you are close to a specific location, you can travel around the map through other means...

Other ways to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Whether you've unlocked fast travel from your camp (as described above) or not, there are other ways of jumping round the map.

One is by using the stagecoach . This is an icon with a signpost on it, and is usually at most towns, ranches and other named locations on the map.

Cover image for YouTube video

Provided you've been to that location previously, you can pay to use the stagecoach to that destination.

By the way, if it looks like the Stagecoach is unavailable (there will be a 'lock' symbol on the icon) it means you're likely in a mission, have to pay a bounty or are currently riding your horse - fix these things and you should be good to go.

rdr2 pc fast travel

The other method is by train . At most larger settlements there is a envelope icon, which indicates a train station. This is not only a postmaster and a place to pay your Wanted bounties, but you can also buy a train ticket to far away destinations.

Unlike the stagecoach, you can take the train to any destination on the list right from the start of Chapter 2 (where the game begins to open up). Not only that, it's usually cheaper than the stagecoach - so if you're somewhere where you have the choice of both, grab the train.

rdr2 pc fast travel

Of course, though the train goes to more prominent locations and allows you to go there straight away, the stagecoach visits a lot of smaller ranches, so both come in handy.

Either way, both cost money, and since you'll be starting a lot of your trips from your camp, purchasing the camp upgrades to fast travel from there will be better in the long run.

How to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Tired of gallivanting on your horse all the time? Here's how to unlock and use fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

While it's fun to gallop through the countryside or run around a town, sometimes you just want to get somewhere fast. Getting to the various towns and regions in Red Dead Redemption 2 often means travelling across the massive map on horseback. However, there are ways to cut down on all that horsemanship and equine bonding.

There are two ways you can fast travel in RDR2 , but you can't just open up the map, choose a location and whisk yourself away at the drop of a hat. You'll either need to track down some public transport or work on those camp upgrades for the Van Der Linde gang, but to give you a helping hand, here's how to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

There are two methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2; you can use public transport such as stagecoaches and trains, or you can unlock the ability to fast travel from camp.

The former - travelling via public transport - is simple. All you need to do is make your way to the nearest ticket station, purchase a ticket to your chosen destination from the kiosk, and then off you go. This'll set you back a few dollars each time, but it definitely makes getting around the map a lot quicker.

Arthur looks at train station tickets at the Rhodes post office in Red Dead Redemption 2

You can also choose to fast travel from your camp , but you will need to upgrade your camp first. There are a few upgrades you can make, which you can read more about in our Red Dead Redemption 2 camp upgrade guide.

To specifically unlock fast travel, however, you'll need to do is head to the camp's money box and open up the ledger next to it. From there, upgrade Dutch's lodgings , which has the added benefit of inspiring other gang members to contribute more.

Arthur looks at the fast travel map at the Shady Belle camp in Red Dead Redemption 2

This will also unlock a map upgrade - this is how you fast travel. Buy that after upgrading Dutch's lodgings, and the map will appear in Arthur's area of the camp - its precise location is different depending on where your camp is located but it is usually close to Arthur's tent. Interact with the map and you'll then be able to choose from a list of destinations to travel to on your trusty steed.

It's $220 for Dutch's quarters and $325 for the map upgrade. The easiest way to get this sort of cash is to buy the upgrades after the gang's first big heist, or after finding a few gold bars.

Arthur looks at fast travel destinations while camping out in the wilderness in Red Dead Redemption 2

What's better is that once you unlock the map upgrade at camp, you can then easily fast travel anywhere for free. You can access the map from Arthur's camp to venture out into the wilderness, but you can also access the fast travel map whenever Arthur sets up a temporary camp. Just rest, set up Arthur's camp, and select fast travel to pick a destination.

If you're trying to set up camp and keep receiving the 'Cannot create camp while there is activity nearby' error, even though you're out in the sticks and not a soul is near, don't worry. Instead, open Arthur's inventory and go to 'Items'. There'll be an option to setup camp here, and it should work without a hitch unless there really is some activity nearby.

So, if you're out hunting legendary animals and find yourself needing to pay a visit to Valentine or Saint Denis, set up a quick camp!

Red Dead Redemption 2: Fast travel guide - How to unlock fast travel

How to get fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Red Dead Redemption 2’s map is a vast, complex beast and sometimes you won’t want to lug your horse halfway across the continent to start a mission. This is where having a method of fast travel comes in handy. While there’s no way of teleporting to discovered locations at any time from the map, there are several methods of transport that’ll certainly prove speedier than a horse.

Below we’ve put together a list of all the fast travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2 and how to unlock them.

rdr2 pc fast travel

How to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Here’s how you can unlock fast travel:

  • You won’t be able to unlock fast travel until you start Chapter 2 in the main story.
  • The first step is to complete the mission “Money Lending and Other Sins”. Hand in your first debt, and you’ll be taught how the ledger can be used to upgrade your camp.
  • When you’ve got a free moment and enough camp cash, open up the ledger and flick to the Lodgings section. Upgrade it once, and you’ll have to the option to upgrade Arthur’s tent. Do this and you’ll unlock fast travel.

To use fast travel, go round the back of Arthur’s tent and view the map that’s there. Select a location that you’ve visited before and you’ll magically appear there along with your main horse.

Other methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

There are two other ways of getting around the map quicker than normal: Stagecoach and train.

Unlocking fast travel from your camp is not a prerequisite! You can use these modes of transport from the beginning of Chapter 2.

How to use a stagecoach

  • There’s a signpost icon near all the major towns and cities in the game, and this is where you’ll find a stagecoach.
  • As long as you’ve been to a certain location previously, you can pay a fare to use the stagecoach to visit that specific destination.
  • If the signpost symbol is locked and greyed out, this means you’re unable to use the stagecoach until after you’ve dismounted from your horse or exited a mission state.

How to use a train

  • At most larger towns and cities there is an envelope icon. Head on over to these locations and you’ll be able to catch a train.
  • Using the train, you can travel to any destination on the list from the very beginning of Chapter 2. It’s also cheaper than the stagecoach too.

Arthur riding a horse in a city in Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 unlimited fast travel guide – Best fast travel method

Image of John Carlo Vijuan

Red Dead Redemption 2 has quite a vast world for you to play in, and that means you’ll be required a lot of patience if you’re willing to wander together with your horse around the entire map. Fast traveling is often seen in open-world games with vast lands to explore. This guide explains the different fast-travel methods in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Which fast travel method is the best in Red Dead Redemption 2?

rdr2 pc fast travel

Upgrading your camp is the best way to fast travel. When you complete Chapter two main mission, “Money Lending and Other Sins,” you’ll unlock the ledger, and by then, you’ll be able to put money in the tithing box. You can use the money in the tithing box to upgrade your camp.

If fast travel is something you want to go for, get the two camp upgrades: “First Things First” and “Next in Line.” They’ll cost $220 and $325, respectively ($545 total). These upgrades will be available to you in the loading category. The “Next In Line” upgrade will unlock a fast travel map, and you can get it behind Arthur Morgan’s tent.

Other ways to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Luckily enough, Rockstar Games has introduced around  three “fast travel” methods  in Red Dead Redemption 2. One of them is the camp upgrades mentioned above, but two other ways aren’t “fast travel” in the instantaneous gaming sense but will get you to your destination faster.

Waypoint marker

rdr2 pc fast travel

There are a few things the game never tells you about, and among these, you can find the ability to put a waypoint marker on the map, then start riding and hold down the Touchpad on PS4 or the View button on Xbox One.

This will make your horse run automatically to the marked location so you can enjoy the view or take a minute to rest. Keep your eyes open, as outlaws and predators of sorts will still be able to attack you. Using this method, it would be more efficient if you have the best horses available at the given time of fast travel.

Train stations and stagecoaches

rdr2 pc fast travel

You can use fast travel from train stations and stagecoaches, too. To do so, you’ll be required to pay a small fee from five to 15  dollars , but there’s a catch: you can only travel between towns and not directly to your camp. Beware, however, that this is only a one-way fast travel, making you go from the camp to towns you’ve already discovered. It won’t work if you want to go back to the camp.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide: How to Unlock Fast Travel & Use It

Image of Chris Jecks

How to Unlock & Use Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is huge, and the various different missions you’ll embark on with your gang, or side activities you can do to fill your spare time will see you traveling all over. While your horse is a great means of getting around quickly, sometimes it can still take up precious time getting from one side of the map to the other. As such, the ability to fast travel is something you’re going to want to make the most of whenever you can. Here’s how to unlock fast travel, how to use fast travel, and all the different ways you can get about a little bit quicker in Red Dead Redemption 2 .

How to Unlock Fast Travel

The first thing you’ll need to do is unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Unlike some games, you cannot simply select somewhere on your map, press a button, and be transported there with some divine powers.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is all about giving a realistic feel to its fast travel system. You can use Stagecoaches to move between towns and locales quickly. However, it’s worth noting that before you can get a Stagecoach to somewhere else, you’ll need to have visited it already.

As such, you may find that the Stagecoach system is locked for the opening few hours in the game, while you find your feet and start exploring the different towns.

This isn’t the only method you can use to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. There are other options that you can unlock or use as your progress through the game, and we’ve detailed all of those below. During your opening few hours with the game, though, the Stagecoach system is likely going to be your best bet.

How to Use Stagecoach Fast Travel

Stagecoaches can often be found just outside of the train stations in Red Dead Redemption 2. We’ve included an image below of the sign you’ll want to look out for, as well as what the one in Valentine looks like. The Valentine stagecoach station is right outside the train station and post office, which can be found towards the south of the town.

When you see this sign, you’ll then went to press and hold Triangle to use the ‘Take a Ride’ option. You can then see the different towns you’ve previously visited, as well as how much it’ll set you back to travel there by stagecoach.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Once you’ve selected where you want to fast travel to in Red Dead Redemption 2, you’ll then be given a lovely little view of the blue skies of the wild west, as the game loads you into your desired location. Arthur will then hop off the Stagecoach, and you’ll have successfully used one element of the fast travel system in Red Dead Redemption 2.

There are other ways to get around quickly, however, so we’ll continue to list these below.

How to Fast Travel on the Train in Red Dead Redemption 2

While the Stagecoach system requires you to have visited a location already for you to be able to fast travel there, you can use trains to get to the main places in Red Dead Redemption 2 quickly and in style. You can’t just hop on a train though… well, not if you want to remain a lawful citizen and keep your bounty low. You’ll need to buy a ticket in order to fast travel using the trains. To do this, you’re going to need to head to the Post Office. This is often located right by the train station in a town, and is marked with an envelope icon on your map.

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Head inside, and use L2 to interact with the NPC behind the bars. You can then choose to buy a train ticket, and you’ll be provided a list of the different locations and how much they cost. Select one, and you’ll be given a lovely view of the train cruising across the countryside, taking you to your desired destination. This is the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 during the early stages of the game if you’ve yet to visit locations and need to for a mission.

Plus, when we used the train to fast travel, we found our horse was hitched at the nearby hitching post at our destination, so that’s a winner, too!

Red Dead Redemption 2 fast travel

Even outside of the train and stagecoach methods of fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, you have other options.

Fast Travel Upgrade for Your Camp

You can purchase an upgrade for Arthur’s lodgings at camp to unlock fast travel. However, it’s worth noting that this also requires you to purchase the Dutch upgrade first, which comes in at a hefty $220. Make sure your camp can afford this hefty expenditure before splashing your cash on it.

Once you’ve purchased the upgrades for both Dutch and Arthur’s lodgings, you’ll then see a little map near Arthur’s bed which enables him to fast travel to any major location free of charge. This is essentially the best way to fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2, though it will cost you a fair amount, meaning you likely won’t unlock it until later on in your adventure.

And there you have absolutely everything there is to know about fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2. Still got some questions? Don’t be shy, sound off in the comments below and we’ll do our best to get back to you.

Players must pay the first $220 upgrade fee before the next tier evens shows up. It is this next tier, at $325, that unlocks the fast travel map, so players will need $545 total. Once purchased, Arthur's fast travel map appears outside his wagon or inside his room at Shady Belle during Chapter 4 . After completing the first part of the Epilogue, the Fast Travel map will become available free of charge (i.e. no upgrades are needed).

Alternatively to using the map, the player can fast travel using their camps. Upon setting up camp, the player is able to fast travel to the same places they could when using the map.

Note that destinations the player can travel to are entirely dependent upon where they have already been. Due to this, and that it is difficult to raise that amount of money in the early game, players may want to wait until they have traveled to more areas.

  • Benedict Point (after Epilogue 1)

  • Wapiti Indian Reservation
  • The gang camp's locations from Chapter 2 to 6 ( Horseshoe Overlook , Clemens Point , Shady Belle , Lakay , and Beaver Hollow ; only available as long as the gang resides within those grounds )

On the side note, using Camp Fast Travel more than once per in-game day empties the player's horse's stamina core.

Stagecoach [ ]

Stagecoach - Red Dead Redemption II

Stagecoach option

Like Red Dead Redemption , Stagecoaches are another fast travel option, and they can be found in most towns. Unlike using the fast travel map, using a stagecoach requires money. Not only that, but players need to be aware of what their level of honor is for that particular town. If their honor is too low, the stagecoach will be locked.

Like the fast travel map, the player will only be able to travel to destinations he has already visited. Stagecoaches, however, cannot take players back to their camp.

  • Emerald Station

If the player wishes, they may also be able to fast travel via purchasing a train ticket at a train station. Tickets for the train, which only runs between select locations, can be purchased at the Post Office. Locations include:

  • Riggs Station
  • Wallace Station

Although traveling by train is noticeably cheaper than using stagecoaches, the reachable destinations are limited within three territories ( West Elizabeth , New Hanover , and Lemoyne ).

If the player is at the countryside of a state and wishes to go to its main town, another alternative of Fast Traveling is to vandal, or kill someone and, after arrival of lawmen, just surrender and they will take the player into the town. However, it will cost the player honor, money, and days in prison.

Missions [ ]

The last alternative option for fast travel comes at the end of some missions. This only requires completion of the mission and accepting the option to travel. Players can, of course, refuse the option if they have other matters to attend to, but this will prevent them from fast traveling back to their camp.

Red Dead Online [ ]

In Red Dead Online , the player can upgrade their camp with an Fast Travel post for $700.00 upon reaching Rank 65.

There are 15 fast travel locations on the map. The cost differs depending on the distance from the current destination.

Cinematic Mode [ ]

Cinematic Mode can be used as a form of "auto run" to reach destinations. To do this, the player must place a waypoint on the map, mount their horse, get up to speed on a road, and hold the touchpad/view button to engage Cinematic Mode. The player's horse will automatically navigate to the waypoint. While not "fast travel" properly said, it does allow the player to put down the controller for a few moments. However, hostiles like rival gangs , bounty hunters and predators will still attack, and sometimes the horse's A.I. fails to deal with traffic on the road as well. Any unique random encounter found by the road may also be lost if the player does not pay attention to them.

Known Bugs [ ]

  • As corpses aren't allowed inside the Van der Linde camp , if the player Fast Travels to it with a dead NPC on horseback, the game will instantly bug as soon as it starts the scene of the player entering its grounds.

Red Dead Redemption 2 How to Unlock Fast Travel

October 25, 2018 by PowerPyx 1 Comment

This guide will teach you how to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2 (RDR2). There are 3 types of fast travel:

  • Permanently Free Fast Travel: Can be unlocked by upgrading your camp.
  • Train Tickets / Post Office: Train Tickets can be bought at the Post Office for a small fee, but not every other train stations can be reached from each town.
  • Stagecoaches: Found in most towns, you can call a Stagecoach to drive you to another town. The downside is that these only work when you have no bounty on your head worldwide.

In addition to fast travel, there is automatic horse travel (autopilot) which lets you set a waypoint anywhere and you can hold Touchpad (PS4) / View-Button (Xbox One) to make your horse ride there automatically. To initiate this you must be riding on a road in the direction of the waypoint.

Unlocking Free Fast Travel (Camp)

Step 1 (Unlock Camp Upgrades) : In Chapter 2, complete Strauss’s story mission “Money Lending and other Sins”. Strauss wants you to track down debtors who took a loan from your gang. There are 3 of them, you just need to get money from one and put it in the camp’s tithing box. This unlocks the ledger next to the tithing box. There you can select camp upgrades!

Step 2 (Unlock Fast Travel): Buy the first two camp upgrades in the lodging category “First Things First” ($220) & “Next in Line” ($325). That’s $545 in total. The second upgrade unlocks a fast travel map behind Arthur’s tent!

rdr2 pc fast travel

Now you can use the map behind Arthur’s tent for free fast travel. You can only travel to discovered towns, but cannot travel back. This is one way only. To get back you’ll have to either ride your horse or use one of the fast travel options below to get to the nearest town and then ride back to camp. Below is an image of what the fast travel map looks like:

Train Fast Travel

Train Tickets can be bought at any Post Office. The further you want to travel the more they cost (it usually varies between $5-$15). The downside is that not every train station is connected to each other. So you may have to take multiple trains to get where you want to go.

The upside is that it works even when you have a bounty on your head. The train fast travel is instant.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide

Second Red Dead Redemption 2 Gameplay Video Released

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a huge game world. It even contains a large chunk of Red Dead Redemption’s map which you can visit after you’ve unlocked it.

Traversing such a vast landscape on foot or on horseback can be a bit daunting, and if you ever need to get to the other end of the map for an objective, going there manually might take too much time. Luckily, the game has fast travel , and this guide will show you how to use it.

First of all, fast travel isn’t accessible by default. Once you’ve reached Chapter 2 and the game has properly opened up before you, camp upgrades become available. One of these is called Dutch’s Lodgings, which then unlocks further upgrades.

First, you need to purchase the “Dutch’s Lodgings” upgrade from the Ledger. After this, you need to buy the “Next In Line” upgrade. The two together cost around $600. Then Fast Travel will be unlocked.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide

Once unlocked, fast-travel still isn’t quite as unrestricted like in some other open world games. Instead of opening your map and allowing you to fast travel anywhere from anywhere, or even just to points of interest like in Assassin’s Creed, there are several orules.

  • You can only fast travel  from your camp, but not back to it.
  • You can only fast travel to specific fast travel locations that you have  already discovered .
  • Fast travel only works if your horse is near the camp when you use the map.
  • Additionally, the interface is also less than helpful, as instead of showing you an actual map, it just gives you a list of location names that you’ll need to remember.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Fast Travel Guide

While this isn’t the most convenient fast-travel system we’ve seen in games, we’re just happy Rockstar added this at all. With so many mechanics expressly focusing on realism above all else, they could have just as easily omitted fast travel from Red Dead Redemption 2 entirely.

If you’re interested in how to upgrade and maintain your cores and bars, check out our guide on the subject.

How To Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

Image of Zack Palm

Red Dead Redemption 2 features a massive map for you to explore, with plenty of secrets waiting for you to discover. Though, getting around this environment takes quite a lot of time.

As with most modern-day games, RDR2 has a method to make things go quicker: fast travel. However, it’s not immediately apparent of how to gain access to this feature in RDR2 . Depending on how you play, you may miss it for quite some time.

In this guide, we break down the quickest way to unlock fast travel in Red Dead Redemption 2.

How To Unlock Fast Travel in Red Dead Redemption 2

To begin the quest that ultimately unlocks fast travel, you want to proceed to the western side of your camp and look for Leopold Strauss . You can find him sitting on a rock , overlooking the valley .

Speaking to him unlocks a long quest line — Money Lending and Other Sins . Luckily, you only have to complete one of the various side quests to access what you need: the ledger (the video above shows you the fastest way to unlock it).

The ledger will give you access to camp upgrades . These additions add things like medicine carts and ammunition crates to your camp, increasing gang morale. The ledger also gives you access to the lodging upgrade,  First Things First .

This upgrade costs $220 . The funds will come out of both your pocket and the camp’s savings. You will then need to purchase the  Next in Line  upgrade, which costs $325 , to get access to fast travel from Arthur’s tent after being unlocked.

That’s no small price. It takes a bit of time to gather this up, and here are some great methods to do this.

How to Get Money Fast in Red Dead Redemption 2

The $545 you need won’t come out of thin air. There’s plenty of methods for you to earn the cash, though.

Your first choice should be to check out the bounties available in Valentine . Although you can find bounties listed in a variety of sheriff’s offices in towns around the map, the bounty in Valentine is the closest for this quest.

Bounties offer a quick influx of $50 or more to get you started quick. However, bounties aren’t as plentiful as you might expect, so you’ll have to shift to other money-making methods quickly.

Side Quests

After you’ve exhausted bounties, your next step may be to see what side quests you can tackle located nearby. This money stacks up over time, though you might feel you can earn more faster if you’re willing to risk the law.

Robbing & Stealing

Robbing people always provides a high rate of income , and with that high rate, you have to endure the consequences. Choose your targets wisely , and make sure you have your bandanna on your face to hide your identity. You don’t want the law on your back before you’re ready to jump around the map like a jackrabbit.

You can also steal things from people’s homes or businesses — then resell those items for profit.

The last method you can use to acquire funds is by hunting the local wildlife . You can skin these animals and sell them in town to the populace. You can also sell the meat to the local butcher.

If you study this path, you’ll need to return to the city quickly after your kill to make sure the creature does not start rotting. When it starts decomposing , it’ll lose value on the market.

Playing Poker and Dominoes

Depending on your skill and luck, you can also play NPCs in games of chance and skill, such as dominoes and poker. Both of these can net big winnings, but the thought of grinding $220 at one time, getting close, and losing it all is a waking nightmare. Only go this route if you feel lucky.

After you’ve acquired your hard-earned cash, return to camp and find the ledger once again. You can purchase access to the fast travel system, and now getting around the map became so much easier.

Red Dead Redemption 2: How To Unlock Free Fast-Travel | All Fast Travel Methods Guide

There are two extremely useful ways to fast-travel you might not know about in Red Dead Redemption 2. Here's how to automatically travel to waypoints, and how to travel long distance for free.

rdr2 pc fast travel

When you first start Red Dead Redemption 2 , you don’t have access to any convenient fast-travel system. You can pay to ride a Stage Couch or Train, but they only take you to a very select number of stations. Certain towns have train stations — and you can buy tickets at the Post. If you’re feeling like riding a couch instead, you need to interact with the couch sign outside the train station. It costs a lot more, though.

If you’ve been investing money into your camp, you can unlock a third method. Once this method is unlocked, you’re free to use it as often as you want. There is no notification that you’ll unlock a new fast-travel method when you’re at your camp, or that there’s any good reason to waste valuable cash on the lodgings option. Well, there is a good reason — free fast-travel.

  • Place a waypoint on your map and begin following the line.
  • Hold down gallop [Cross / A] on your controller then turn on Cinematic Camera mode while on a waypoint path. Tap gallop to reach full speed for a moment, then release.
  • You’ll continue to follow the path and follow the waypoint to your destination.

How To Unlock Free Fast-Travel | All Fast Travel Methods Guide

There are three fast-travel methods in RDR2 — train, stage couch, and the base camp map . The train and stage couch can be found at any post station. Each has a different line, so you can reach different places for a price. The base camp map, on the other hand, is totally free . You can unlock it as early as Chapter 2 .

  • Complete Strauss’s first main story mission to unlock the ledger in Chapter 2.
  • Purchase Dutch’s Tent upgrade. ($220)
  • Purchase Arthur’s Tent upgrade. ($325)
  • After getting both upgrades, the fast travel map will unlock .

You’ll need a total of $545 to purchase both upgrades. If you need money fast, checkout the guides linked above for a very simple method to earn $2000, or $1500 gold quickly.

The map is located on the side of Arthur’s Tent . You can travel to the following locations (as they’re unlocked) for free:

  • Emerald Ranch
  • Van Horn Trading

And that’s it! This is the most convenient way to travel huge distances in the game, and it’s absolutely worth unlocking early.

Meta Quest’s new Travel Mode will put more glassholes on your next flight

Another vision pro feature comes to quest headsets..

By Wes Davis , a weekend editor who covers the latest in tech and entertainment. He has written news, reviews, and more as a tech journalist since 2020.

Three windows being used in Quest passthrough on an airplane.

Meta Quest headsets are ready to go on flights with you as Meta has announced a new Travel Mode. The company is rolling out the experimental feature to Quest 2 and 3 headsets running Quest software version 65 or later, allowing owners to use the headset in passthrough on a flight without windows drifting away from them.

To try it, opt in under Settings > Experimental features . Then the new mode will live in the Quick settings panel, where you can toggle it from the Quest’s universal menu. Travel Mode isn’t without limitations — it’s not designed to account for the motion of a car or train, for instance; Meta says support for other transportation methods is coming. Also, if a game or app requires an internet connection, your plane will still need to offer Wi-Fi.

Quest headsets could already be used on flights, but doing it required turning off positional tracking, which also disables passthrough, as UploadVR notes .

  • Meta’s Quest headsets add spatial video and pinch controls to compete with Vision Pro

The new mode seems aimed straight at Apple’s Vision Pro , which launched with a similar travel mode (and similar caveats). I’ve tried the headset in a car — as a passenger, of course; I’m not a monster — and it still mostly worked as long as the car wasn’t stopping and going a lot, and tracking failed if I looked out the side windows. Depending on how the Meta Quest’s new mode works, that could be the case for it as well, or it could be that it simply refuses to work if it doesn’t think you’re on a plane.

The new Travel Mode joins a growing list of Vision Pro-style features that Meta has added to its headset that debuted on Apple’s $3,500 headset earlier this year. This includes more expansive pinch controls as well as the ability to use it lying down and play back spatial videos recorded on an iPhone 15 Pro or Pro Max.

Update May 13th, 12:54PM ET: Added videos posted by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and CTO Andrew Bosworth.
