Roger Waters (born September 6, 1944) is a world-renowned, seminal British musician who rose to recognition as the conceptual leader of the progressive rock outfit Pink Floyd, hailing from Great Bookham, Surrey, England.

Born in Great Bookham, Surrey, Roger Waters’ father was a conscientious objector for the early part of WW2, however later changed this stance and was killed in action at Aprilia when Roger was five months old. Following his fathers death, Roger moved with his mother to Cambridge, which is where he met future band mates Syd Barrett and David Gilmour. Upon subsequently enrolling at Regent Street Polytechnic, Waters met Pink Floyd founding members Nick Mason and Richard Wright. The three members went on to play music together for the first time in the autumn of 1963, dubbing themselves Stigma 6 and occasionally the Meggadeaths.

By 1966 the moniker Pink Floyd had been settled on with a lineup consisting of Roger Waters, Syd Barrett, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright. Together Pink Floyd would prove to be one of the most influential, open-minded and ultimately successful rock bands of all time. In 1968 Barrett left the group and was replaced by David Gilmour, as a result Waters took the band’s conceptual reigns and began honing the distinctive Punk Floyd sound. This included the second best-selling record of all time “The Dark Side of the Moon” (1973), “Wish You Were Here” (1975), “Animals” (1977), “The Wall” (1979), and “The Final Cut” (1983), culminating in over 250 million copies sold worldwide.

Waters departed Pink Floyd in 1985 and following a legal dispute regarding the rights to the name and material, the musician began crafting solo material. The esteemed singer-songwriter’s debut solo album, “The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking”, arrived in 1984, featuring Eric Clapton and David Sanborn. Following the release and disappointing supporting tour, Waters scored the soundtrack to the animated film “When the Wind Blows” in 1986, after which he released his second full-length album “Radio K.A.O.S.”. Issued in 1987, the record is a concept album based on a Welsh mute who can physically tune his mind into radio waves, and earned more popular reviews than its predecessor.

In November 1989, the world’s most polarising symbol, the Berlin Wall, fell. In 1990 Waters staged arguably the largest and most impressive rock concert in history, The Wall Live. Playing to in excess of 200,000 people, alongside fellow musicians Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper, and the Scorpions, a double live album “The Wall - Live in Berlin” was subsequently released to platinum sales. After a move to Columbia Records, Waters released his third studio album, “Amused to Death”, in 1992. Drawing greater comparisons to his Pink Floyd output, the record was his best-received to date, spawning the single “What God Wants, Pt. 1”.

In 1999 the extolled musician began touring again after a seven-year hiatus, playing a combination of solo and Pink Floyd material. The tour proved a huge success, constantly expanding to play larger venues and more dates, including a final show at 2002’s Glastonbury Festival. Following a reunion with Mason, Wright, and Gilmour in 2005 for Live 8 in London’s Hyde Park, Waters released the operatic album “Ça Ira”, based on the French Revolution. In 2010 Waters’ The Wall Live tour began, which by 2013 became the highest-grossing tour by a solo artist of all time.

Live reviews

Roger Waters: Us + Them

This was one of the most spectacular concert experiences of my life, and I have seen hundreds of shows. I was blown away a few years ago by Roger's The Wall tour and really did not know what to expect from Us + Them.

When I saw the tour was kicking off close to my home I immediately got online to buy a ticket, took the day off from work, and drove to Kansas City to see the opening show of the tour. It was unbelievable and exceeded my expectations. I thought it would just be a singular concert limited to Roger's new album, "Is This the Life We Really Want?", which would have been just fine with me, but it was so much more. If you loved or even just liked The Wall tour you will be equally impressed by Us + Them. I do not make that comparison lightly. The Wall is the gold standard of rock shows in my opinion.

There was so much going on as far as music, videos, and props it is hard to believe that any one person could possibly take it all in. The images were so vivid and carefully constructed it was almost impossible to keep from being overwhelmed by the impact on the audience.

As with much of Pink Floyd music there was a multitude of political statements, mostly critical of Trump and the shameful things going on in the United States today.

The music was a mixture of Roger's solo and Pink Floyd tunes, borrowing heavily from Darkside of the Moon, The Wall, and Animals. You don't have to be a Pink Floyd fan or a Roger Waters fan to love this show. It comes easily if you go by nothing more than spectacle. If you are a Pink Floyd fan you will look at the music in a whole new way. If that's even possible over all these years.

I highly recommend this show to anyone who loves rock 'n' roll, statement theatre, and high production values. The use of stadium sized HD video screens, and the pig and moon drones, followed by the laser pyramid at the end..., you have no idea what you are in for.

The Sprint Center was filled to near capacity with absolutely thrilled fans. There was no barring of video or photography, and there is no way that any one person could take all of the imagery in.

I think if you review setlist.com and look at YouTube videos of the show it will make you want to see the show more and not feel like you've already seen it. Video and photographs do not do justice to everything that was going on nor do they capture the scope and scale.

While watching, I thought of all my friends and family who would enjoy the show, and wish they could've been there with me to experience the sheer joy of this production.

I must also point out how genuinely appreciative and blown away Roger was by the positive response from the audience during his stage interactions. He was clearly pleased with his creation and it's effect on everyone present. As usual he delivers his message in a spot-on manner and clearly connects with what people are feeling in the age of Trump. It is impossible to comment on all the messages and imagery employed during Roger's commentary. Suffice to say that Roger is a master wordsmith and musician and proves it again with Us + Them. He is truly a treasure to be savored. I cannot wait to see him again. His polish, professionalism, and production values blow 99% of other rock acts completely out of the water. What an experience! I highly recommend this show.

I saw the man, (the "legend"!), on his 2010 "The Wall" tour, at the Staples Center here in Los Angeles. I also went to see the "Pros and Cons.." & "Radio Kaos" tours, years back. I expected a lot from "Roger Waters' - The Wall", I have to admit; for I'd read & heard reviews, & knew that Roger was quite proud of the show. I've listened to the original "The Wall" album maybe a thousand or more times since it came out in 1980,(no exaggeration, either), for I truly do love the album. I know it word for word, & note for note. What I got to witness at this concert, though, even exceeded my expectations! It was far and away the best rock concert I've ever experienced 'in my life' - & I say this, after going to maybe 70 major rock concerts over the last 40 years. The sound was amazing, the visuals were mind-boggling, & Roger still sings and plays so incredibly well. Outside of his music, I see Mr. Waters (the man) as a pretty awesome person, too. A creative genius, a true humanitarian who 'cares' about others, & I very much relate to his political views. Just,.. if there is any 'one person' that I consider a "hero" of mine, I suppose it would have to be Roger Waters. In concert, there just is no better, (well, except for maybe Led Zeppelin)LoL; so, in a word, "GO!" (You won't be sorry.)

Roger Waters is an English musician, singer, songwriter and composer best known as the bassist and vocalist with Pink Floyd. However, as a solo artist, he still puts on great concerts. Waters has had a solo career for about thirty years and has come to recent prominence with his anti-war sentiment. During the United States invasion of Iraq led to two new tracks on the Internet: "To Kill the Child", inspired by the 2003 invasion of Iraq, and "Leaving Beirut", an anti-war song inspired by his travels in the Middle East.

Waters puts on a good show that is pretty simple in nature. The focus is on him on the stage as he generally is in skinny tattered jeans and a grungy t-shirt with just him, his guitar, and a microphone. He is still an amazing performer and fills the room with his powerful voice and lyrics. I've seen him play a stadium and he still managed to wow the whole place and it was impossible to stay seated. I wasn't the only one - everyone was standing up and singing along. The epic guitar riffs backed up by drums, keys and a light show and set that was just as epic, making it one scorcher of a concert.

You would be hard pressed to find another show that captures an amazing sound, displays some of the most cutting-edge theatrics, and packs a more powerful message all in one show.

If you are a fan of Pink Floyd, DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!!! If you are a casual fan, I suspect you would still enjoy this show immensely, though anyone who is an actual fan of the band/Roger knows he wears his political views on his sleeves. If you are completely oblivious to this you are either not a huge fan, or just don't care about politics anyway. It would be like me going to see Ted Nugent and expecting him to say something I wouldn't find repellent- that would be on me.

So, to summarize, if you love the work of Pink Floyd & specifically much of what Roger wrote, plus you are either left-leaning politically (or couldn't be bothered), them go. Otherwise, stay home so actual fans don't have to hear inane chit-chat behind us while trying to enjoy the show.

The music was excellent.

Every Pink Floyd song was spot on.

The sound system sounded great even in the cheap seats. The show was nearly, if not completely sold out and I saw no empty seats. The crowd was well behaved while security was thorough they were not obnoxious.

The only negative was the overbearing Anti-Trump rhetoric with a continuous "F" Trump message splashed across the big screen during many songs. The obligatory flying pig even had Anti-Trump slogans! It was sad that musical performances and artist feel they need to push a political agenda! I felt the whole time this was displayed that if identical slurs had been made against our previous President, the media would have a melt down! CNN, ABC, CBS, MSNBC would have been proud!

WOW! That is all one can truly say about this performance! The theatrics were incredible, the band was top-notch, and Waters himself, hasn't lost a thing, and obviously was deeply moved-by, and appreciative-of his fans. I was pleased to see a sold-out arena for the evening, composed of all age-groups and backgrounds. Personally, my favorite portion, or aspect, of the experience was the political critiques being cast through the imagery and music, with a nice-touch of synchronized youth from the Philadelphia area during 'Another Brick Part 2'. Very dark and thought provoking, as Floyd has been for me through my life. Please return next year! I can-not wait to see The Wall! Thank you for your work to assist in raising awareness! RESIST.

The show was spectacular a real treat for the ears and eyes, I have seen Pink Floyd live (1980, The Wall) David Gilmour live (2016, Royal Albert Hall) and now Roger Waters. All were superb.

What was amazing was the near 10 minute standing ovation near the end of the show - even Roger was somewhat taken aback.

A big age range was in the audience I saw one woman must be near 80 right down to kids around the 10 year old mark.

Sitting beside me was a girl around the 20 mark, who clearly knew all the lyrics and had never seen any Pink Floyd stuff done live before - she was in tears for about half the show, she enjoyed it that much.

Excellent show, pass it on to Roger and his superb band.

Most recent time I have seen Roger Waters was in Birmingham as part of the Us & Them tour. I expected something spectacular and it certainly was visually amazing, and musically excellent with some very good musicians and singers aswell. There was quite a lot of politics, most of which was very relevant, and the audience was very supportive.

If you are expecting more from Roger Waters than merely going through Pink Floyd songs then I definitely recommend seeing him. This show was excellent and definitely not boring - in fact on the 3 occasions I have seen him he has held my interest throughout.

Absolutely stunning! Roger once again managed to completely blow my mind. It was not the show I was expecting but in fact it surpassed my expectations - just the right balance of Floyd with his new material although I would have welcomed a track or two from his first three albums.

I discovered new meaning in all of the Floyd material which is a true testament to the magnitude of their greatness. Was wonderful hearing Roger call out Trump, Putin, et al but also hold the audience accountable - he owned us in the best way possible.

Worth every penny!

All I can say is AWESOME!!! Just what I expected! I can't get one of the new songs he played out of my head and I dreamed about it that night. VERY powerful! David Kilminster played all the Pink Floyd stuff spot on!!! The singers Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig helped make it an amazing show as well but all the people on stage did! Out show was in Vancouver and he got local kids up and singing for "Another Brick in the Wall" which also was spot on. Loved and agreed with all his comments to the audience.

Roger Waters Sets Rescheduled Tour Dates, Teases His ‘First Farewell Tour’

  • By Kory Grow

Roger Waters will embark on what he’s cheekily teasing as his “first farewell tour,” officially dubbed This Is Not a Drill, next summer. He was supposed to launch the trek last year, but pandemic lockdowns sidelined his plans. The new run of dates will kick off in Pittsburgh on July 6th, 2022.

Tickets are on sale now via RogerWaters.com . Those who held onto tickets for the 2020 dates will get an email with further information about the new dates. Those tickets will be valid for the new dates.

“This Is Not A Drill is a groundbreaking new rock & roll/cinematic extravaganza, performed in the round,” Waters wrote in a statement. “It is a stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to love, protect, and share our precious and precarious planet home. The show includes a dozen great songs from Pink Floyd ‘s Golden Era alongside several new ones — words and music, same writer, same heart, same soul, same man. Could be his last hurrah. Wow! My first farewell tour! Don’t miss it. Love, R.”

When Waters announced the tour last year , he promised an all-new production, following his Us + Them and the Wall tours, that would be presented in the round.

When he was originally planning it, he had timed it to run up to the 2020 election. “[The new tour] will be even more political than Us + Them was — political and humane,” Waters told Rolling Stone in 2019. “We were listening to songs and looking at setlists today. We were talking about, what should we call it? I shouldn’t be giving this away, but I don’t give a shit because it will probably all change, but imagine the iconic helicopter that normally comes before ‘Happiest Days’ and ‘Brick 2’ — that noise that we all know and love — and imagine a megaphone, somebody abused this device before, I know — but, ‘This is not a drill.’ I thought that could be a good title for the show: This Is Not a Drill. The ruling class is killing us.”

Roger Waters Offers His Thoughts on Drake and The Weeknd: ‘I Am Far, Far, Far More Important’

Roger Waters

Roger Waters is offering his thoughts on how his musical legacy measures up against some of today’s biggest stars.

The subject arose during a recent interview with Toronto’s The Globe and Mail , when a reporter told the former Pink Floyd rocker that he was assigned by the Canadian publication to review The Weeknd ‘s show at the city’s Rogers Centre on July 8 (which was ultimately postponed ) rather than Waters’ back-to-back concerts at the nearby Scotiabank Arena on July 8-9.

“But the Weeknd was canceled, and my show was for two nights,” Rogers said, referencing a nationwide power outage that caused The Weeknd’s show to be postponed . “I have no idea what or who The Weeknd is, because I don’t listen to much music. People have told me he’s a big act. Well, good luck to him. I’ve got nothing against him. Would it not have been possible to review his show one night and my show another night?”

Roger Waters

The 78-year-old icon added that he wasn’t “trying to make a personal attack” against The Weeknd, but that it “seemed odd” that the newspaper couldn’t review both concerts on separate nights. Waters then took aim at another Canadian superstar: Drake .

“By the way, with all due respect to The Weeknd or Drake, or any of them, I am far, far, far more important than any of them will ever be, however many billions of streams they’ve got. There is stuff going on here that is fundamentally important to all of our lives,” Waters said without elaborating.

Trending on Billboard

Waters is currently on the road as part of his This Is Not a Drill tour, which visits North American arenas through mid-October. The musician’s next concert is scheduled for Sunday (July 17) at Quebec’s Videotron Center.

A news release for This Is Not a Drill describes the tour as a “stunning indictment of the corporate dystopia in which we all struggle to survive, and a call to action to LOVE, PROTECT and SHARE our precious and precarious planet home.”

London church hosts concert by ‘antisemitic’ pink floyd star roger waters.

Outcry over Roger Waters performance at St Pancras Church

Alleged antisemite Roger Waters will perform in a Church of England building this evening along with anti-Zionist rapper Lowkey.

Notorious for his use of Nazi-era symbols, the Pink Floyd frontman has become known for his anti-Israel rants and offensive costumes.  After they received numerous complaints, on Friday afternoon St Pancras Church said it would not cancel the concert featuring Waters, despite recognising “that the programme has greatly offended friends in the Jewish community.”

This church said it did not intend to cause any offence but that the concert would go ahead as planned.

The Gaza fundraising event, “Rock for Palestine,” is an external booking by alternative media outlet Double Down News, and will be streamed on YouTube on Friday evening.

Protests erupted outside the church on Euston Road on Friday afternoon, as around two hundred demonstrated against Water’s “virulent antisemitism” being allowed in the church.

Jewish protest organisers said that hosting Waters “is utterly unacceptable, and we must show London that we will not tolerate a church in our city giving stage to such disgusting collection of known Jew haters.”

Campaign group Christian Action Against Antisemitism told the church leader: “Platforming a renowned Jew hater is not only offensive but it is also entirely unacceptable.”

In May last year, German police launched a criminal investigation into Water’s SS-style uniform. Performing in Berlin, he wore a black overcoat with a red armband and aimed an imitation machine gun into the audience.

His solo shows have featured the name of Holocaust victim, Anne Frank, projected onto a screen, and a pig-shaped balloon adorned with the Star of David and various corporate logos.

In September last year, John Ware presented an in depth documentary for the Campaign against Antisemitism which delved into numerous claims of antisemitism levelled against Walters.

[Missing Credit]

According to the Anti-Defamation League, in a video last month he advocated for the dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state, denied the Jewish connection to Israel, and called on Jews living in Israel to "go back to Eastern Europe, or the United States, or where you came from," adding "Goodbye, Israel. It's over."

Waters is slated to share the church stage on Friday night with British rapper Lowkey, who has called the state of Israel a "racist endeavour", and previously said "nothing is more antisemitic than Zionism."

Tickets for the event, pitted as “a unique concert dedicated to promoting peace, freedom, and justice for Palestine,” have sold out.

There are concerns that hosting Waters could open the door to antisemitism inside St Pancras Church, affiliated to the Church of England.

[Missing Credit]

One protester who said he is a Pink Floyd fan told the JC , “It is immensely sad that I will be standing outside Roger Waters’ concert today waving the Israel flag, blowing the whistle and hopefully affecting the show he will be giving today. But it is a necessity.

“Like many others, Roger Waters has drifted off into a fashionable ideological attitude.

“All Pink Floyd group members have distanced themselves from Waters a long time ago and whatever he does, both on a personal and a ‘political’ level, is motivated and nourished by a deep-rooted narcissism that is sad to witness.”

In a statement, the church said: “Last month, St Pancras Church was approached regarding a booking for a fundraising concert, in support of the charity Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF). The church regularly receives charitable bookings to raise funds for much-needed causes, and it was accepted, although at this stage the event’s programme had not been finalised.

“We recognise now that the programme has greatly offended friends in the Jewish community. This was never our intention and we apologise unreservedly.

“At this stage, with large numbers of people having bought tickets to a charity fundraising event in good faith, we are obliged to honour the booking. We have also received security advice and assessed the public order aspects.

“Antisemitism and Islamophobia have no place in our society, or in our church. We commit to meeting with representatives of the Jewish community to learn more about antisemitism, and to ensure a deeper understanding of concerns of our Jewish friends and neighbours.”

The Church of England has been approached for comment.

Roger Waters lambastes Keir Starmer in pro-Palestine fundraiser concert

T here is something galling about being told by Roger Waters , halfway through an interminable rant about Palestine, Keir Starmer and how awful politicians are generally, that I look bored. Fair play to Waters, who, famously, once spat in an unappreciative fan’s face, an action that inspired his magnum opus The Wall: he doesn’t mince his words. He was the headline act for a hastily organised show at St Pancras Church that was half awareness-raiser for Palestine and half rally for Andrew Feinstein, the independent candidate for Starmer’s constituency of Holborn and St Pancras.

It was, inevitably, something of a scrappy evening, even after entering the venue past the angry pro-Israel protesters, booming out I Will Survive from their speakers. A trio of acts performed to a highly partisan audience that included an appropriately stern-faced Alexei Sayle. In between the deafening chants of “Free Palestine!” and “Long live Palestine”, there were some musical gems, as well as longueurs. First up was rapper Lowkey, who was accompanied by a bandmate on grand piano and whose angry, politicised raps played well to the crowd, especially his song ‘Dear England’, written in the aftermath of the Grenfell tragedy and now updated to include attacks on Starmer – “He calls himself a human rights lawyer but does not believe in genocide… he backs Israel to the hilt.”

The big draws were Yusuf Islam, aka Cat Stevens, and Waters. Stevens performed a beautiful version of Wild World, as well as two less-distinguished contemporary songs, and struck the most emollient note, dedicating his act to the “most pure” children of Palestine and saying, “We’re fighting for peace, not for anything else.”

Unfortunately, this didn’t get through to the headline act, who was on typically belligerent form. Black T-shirted and looking fit and active for an octogenarian, Waters and his bandmate Dave Kilminster treated the hushed congregation to an exquisite rendition of Wish You Were Here, but a long, rambling newer song, The Bar, sounded like an outtake from The

Wall – a feeling reinforced when Waters concluded it with the opening verses of Outside the Wall.

Rock’s most notorious provocateur, who professed himself jetlagged after only arriving in the country a couple of hours before, was on fighting form, vigorously denouncing “the genocide enabler” Starmer, and declaring “I’ve looked at Keir Starmer and I’ve looked at Andrew Feinstein. I can tell a smile from a veil.” At the conclusion of The Bar, a pleased Waters, in his element, declared, “The only thing I would feel ashamed about is to stand by being silent and indifferent, and I’m not.” Love him or loathe him, this most controversial of musicians will not be quiet.

Pink Floyd founder Roger Waters joined Yusuf/Cat Stevens and rapper Lowkey in a “Stand Up for Palestine” concert at London’s St Pancras New Church on Friday night. The concert was announced on Tuesday night and tickets sold out immediately.

These are important, socially committed artists, determined to take a stand against the mass murder and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians. All not only oppose the direct perpetrator of these atrocities, Israel, but the complicity of British imperialism and of the Labour Party led by Sir Keir Starmer.

It is for this reason that Waters has become a hate figure in ruling circles and the target of a vile slander campaign denouncing him as an antisemite. Outside the event, his car was attacked by around 20 Zionists who sought to block his entry to the venue until they were moved on by police. The thugs then joined a slightly larger protest waving Israeli flags and placards targeting Waters, with a main banner reading, “Hey Roger, Leave us Jews alone.”

Inside the church, hundreds packed into the pews and upper balconies for the more than two-hour concert.

Lowkey, accompanied by a pianist and two talented back-up singers, performed the most overtly political material of the evening. His song, “Free my people: Long live Palestine”, speaks of the “Encircling of the people of Gaza/ Killing of civilians/ the burning of Bones”. This was followed by “My Soul” and “Ghosts of Grenfell”, a moving tribute to the 72 victims of the 2017 Grenfell tower fire. He performed “Ahmed”, personalising the deaths of tens of thousands of refugees denied entrance to Fortress Europe, and “Dear England”, a song about the London riots in 2011.

Lowkey denounced Labour Party leader Starmer, saying that as Director of Public Prosecutions (2008-2013) he had opened 24-hour courts to send “children as young as 12 to jail for stealing bottled water, for crimes of poverty”. He denounced Starmer as “someone who calls themselves a human rights lawyer, but does not believe in the crime of genocide” and “backs Israel to the hilt.”

Yusuf (Cat Stevens) Islam sang his major hit, “Wild World”, before focusing on Gaza. His music is refracted through the prism of his faith but addresses contemporary society and the suffering inflicted on the oppressed honestly.

“Bad storms or clear skies/ Those politicians keep telling lies/ Daylight, deep dark/ They steal hope from the people’s hearts”, he sings in “All nights, All days”. A childhood friend is killed in “The boy who knew how to climb walls”: “Then the bombs came down on my small village town/As I looked around, it was gone/Mama called our names, father never came/Life was never the same from that day on.”

Waters performed two pieces, beginning with a moving guitar-accompanied “Wish You Were Here” that he introduced as being widely understood as “a lament for a dead childhood friend of mine, Syd Barrett,” but which “tonight is for Palestine.” He then sang his ballad, “The Bar”, a deeply humane and never recorded song, dealing with huge tragedies such as the Vietnam war and the dispossession of the Lakota Nation: “Here’s a message for the man/ Would you kindly get the fuck off our land?” The connection with Gaza does not need to be argued for. As well as defiance, Waters urges unity and solidarity, asking, “Does everybody in the bar feel pain? … feel a little maimed? ... I guess we all feel pretty much the same.”

Waters hailed all those who stand up for Gaza, saying that he and many others “live on the brink of tears” because “we feel empathy for our brothers and sisters in Gaza and the other occupied territories in Palestine.”

Starmer, who Waters decried as a “genocide enabler”, “lives in a cage of his own choosing, where he does the bidding of the ruling class. For all of us to be here in this beautiful church is to play a walk on part in the war… We are all soldiers in the battle for human rights, including centrally for the people of Palestine.”

There was, however, a vast difference between the immense sincerity of the artists performing for Palestine and the calculated evasiveness of those political speakers utilising the concert as an election rally for Andrew Feinstein, who is opposing Starmer as an independent candidate in Holborn and St Pancras for the Collective electoral alliance.

Feinstein is a former African National Congress MP who later joined the Labour Party in Britain, becoming a prominent supporter of former leader Jeremy Corbyn based on the claim that his leadership offered the possibility of Labour’s left-wing transformation.

He spoke from the stage after Lowkey’s performance, accompanied by two other independent candidates, Leanne Mohamad in Ilford North and Tanushka Marah in Brighton and Hove. All are members of “Collective”, an alliance backed by Corbyn’s Peace and Justice Project. Its five demands are: a pay rise for all, green new deal with public ownership, housing for all, tax the rich to save the NHS and welcome refugees in a world free from war. These are advanced as a utopian reformist wish list totally detached from the real class struggle and the building of a mass working class movement for socialism.

There was, therefore, no mention of how the reformist yearnings of the Collective are to be achieved, beyond electing figures like Feinstein to Parliament. Nor was there a single proposal made as to how the millions in the UK and internationally demanding an end to genocide can take forward a struggle not just against Israel but the imperialist powers backing it. Time after time, the appeal was to what the concert’s emcee, referencing the church in which the event was held, called the “sacred values of peace, love, compassion, kindness and empathy.”

In other words, not a single lesson has been, or is to be, drawn from the disastrous reign of Corbyn as leader of the Labour Party, let alone that of Syriza in Greece.

Ironically, Cat Stevens’ warning in “Wild World” — “a lot of nice things turn bad out there” — expressed a far greater appreciation of political reality than was to be found in the speeches of the representatives of the Collective, whose members “hope to get by just upon a smile.”

Particularly striking was the absence of any reference to NATO’s de facto war against Russia, which is rapidly escalating toward a nuclear conflict. The decision to avoid raising the issue of Ukraine reflects political differences on the war among the Corbynites, and it separates opposition to the Gaza genocide from the broader global struggle against imperialism.

Feinstein spoke only of changing “our politics”, “our world, and not by looking to any leaders but by looking in the mirror, at ourselves, and by joining arms with our neighbours.”

Marah, a theatre director and actress, spoke of a “new politics” that was not socialist but “the gathering of all peoples, all races, all classes”.

Invoking the unity of all classes is a time-worn mechanism for opposing the independent political mobilisation of the working class against capitalism. In the context of Gaza, where the ruling class in every country, backed by every one of their major parties, has either explicitly backed and armed Israel, made only token calls for a ceasefire, or both, such an appeal is unforgivable.

The Socialist Equality Party is standing Tom Scripps in Holborn and St Pancras, challenging Starmer, as part of the fight to build a socialist anti-war movement in the working class across Europe and internationally.

Our manifesto explains that US and British support for Israel’s mass murder and ethnic cleansing in Gaza is part of plans by the imperialist powers for a new military carve-up of the world and its resources, centred on advanced preparations for war with Russia, Iran, and China.

We insist that building a new anti-war movement demands an irrevocable break with the Labour Party, and the building of a mass revolutionary party of the working class. Crucially, the manifesto addresses the central lessons of Corbyn’s five years as leader of the Labour Party:

“The only reason Starmer is poised to enter 10 Downing Street is that Corbyn and his backers, elected by a landslide to lead the Labour Party in 2015, faced down demands from workers and youth to drive out the Blairites. Corbyn capitulated on all fundamental issues, including NATO membership and nuclear weapons, and then politely handed the party over to Starmer. The refusal to fight the lie of ‘left antisemitism’ laid the basis for mass expulsions and now the grotesque depiction of Gaza protests, also attended by hundreds of Jews, as ‘hate marches’... The Socialist Equality Party states plainly to workers, especially the young generation: The building of a new and genuinely socialist leadership must begin now. We advance the socialist and internationalist programme on which this new leadership must be built.”

SEP members and supporters campaigning outside the concert were denounced by some Feinstein supporters for “splitting the left” or the “Gaza vote.” This is only a variant of the old attack on our party for standing against Labour on a socialist programme.

The SEP will not sink our political differences with Corbyn and his backers, who bear political responsibility for Starmer’s leadership, and who, elected or not, will continue to support Labour while registering their protests—just as they now call for a Labour vote where they are not standing. Those urging us to do so are allowing Corbyn to again police oppositional sentiment among workers and youth, which is a recipe for defeat.
