The Complete Guide to Rohida (Vichitragad) Trek

If you have never experienced raging winds, Rohida, a fort near Pune, is a must-do trek. If you are trekking in monsoon, on left side of the ridge you see waterfalls that flow upwards, so fierce is the wind here.

Along with this, some breath-taking views of the farms and water dams can be seen from the bastions. There are a total of six bastions covering the fortification wall. All of these are still strong.

Short Itinerary

  • An easy, day trek from Pune, Rohida can literally sweep you off your feet because of the strong wind here.
  • In monsoon, watch the waterfalls upturn because of the force of the wind.
  • In winter, delight in the colourful flowers that grow here endlessly.

Trail Information

Bajarwadi, around 62 km from Pune, is the village at the base of Rohida. Once you reach Bajarwadi, spot the village school. The trail begins opposite the school.

The trail begins with a gradual ascent. In a few minutes, you’ll see two overhead water tanks on your right. As you proceed, you notice the trail becomes narrow. It is well marked so there is absolutely no chance of getting lost if you stay on the trail.

You’ll reach a broad plateau after 10 minutes of ascent. From here you can clearly see the fortification and bastions of the fort. This plateau streamlines onto a ridge.

If you are trekking in monsoon, on the left side of the ridge, you can see waterfalls that flow upwards, due to the fierce wind! This raging wind will accompany you till you return.

There is no dense forest on this trail. You only find meadows and small bushes. Though the climb is fairly easy, sometimes it really gets difficult due to the stormy wind. It takes about 1 hour of gradual climb from the plateau to reach the first gate of the fort.

After 15-20 stone steps you reach the second gate. There is a small, underground water cistern right in front of this gate. Please note that this water is not potable. Another fifty steps bring you to the third gate.

Here, you find two trails. The one on the left takes you to the temple of Lord Ganesha. There are two lakes near the temple. You can just sit beside them and relax.

The second trail, which proceeds straight ahead from the gate, takes you around the periphery of the fort.

There are several bastions on the fort. Shirvale bastion to the South-East, Patane and Damgude bastions to the South, Waghjai bastion to the North, Fatteh bastion at the courtyard. There are a total of 6 bastions covering the fortification wall and are still strong. There is a series of cisterns on the Northern part of the fort.

You get breath-taking views of farms and dams from the bastions. The wind is so powerful that the grass flies back at you when thrown from the fort. You can spend at least an hour exploring the fort.

Other forts which can be seen from Rohida on a clear day include Purandar to the North-East; Rajgad and Torna to the North-West; and Raireshwar, Kamalgad, Kenjalgad, Madhardevi to the South-West.

Once you finish exploring the fort, retrace your way back to Bajarwadi on the same trail.

Note: ‘Shivadurga’ is a Pune-based organization that adopts forts in Maharashtra for their rehabilitation. Rohida is one of them. They work hard to keep the fort clean. Their workers are dressed as mavle (army men of Shivaji Maharaj were called mavle) and guard the fort at the first gate. This makes you feel that you are in Shivaji Maharaj’s era! Inside the fort, you can volunteer to lend a hand to clean the place.

Rohida Fort Information Guide : Hike, History & Must-Sees

Table of Contents

Rohida Fort : A Brief Overview Nestled amidst the Sahyadri mountain range, between Bhor and Mahabaleshwar, lies a picturesque trekking route. This route is dotted with several forts, and Rohida is one of its most prominent ones. Rohida Fort is situated in the Rohida Valley, which forms part of the Nira River Valley. This valley once had 42 villages, and out of them, 41 currently fall under the Bhor taluka of Pune district. Rohida Fort served as the main stronghold of the Rohida Valley. Due to the cooperative sugar factories and cooperative milk schemes in Pune and Satara districts, facilities like buses and electricity have reached most of the villages in this region. This has improved the quality of life of the people in this area. Rohiḍa Fort is located about 6 miles south of Bhor and this fort is also known as ‘Vichitragad’ or ‘Bini Fort’.

Rohida Fort places to visit

Gates and ramparts The first gate of Rohiḍa Fort has a Ganeshpati panel and a mihrab (arch) above it. The second gate is reached by climbing 15 to 20 steps. Upon entering through this gate, there is an underground water tank right in front. The third gate is a very grand and strong gate. It exhibits excellent examples of carvings. Elephant heads are carved on both sides of the gate, and there are inscriptions in Marathi on the left side and Persian on the right side.

Structures on the fort Upon entering through the third gate, two structures are visible right in front. One must be the fort’s administrative building, and the other, the residence of the fort commander. A short walk to the left leads to the temple of ‘Rohiḍamalla’, also known as ‘Bhairbaba’. The temple houses idols of Ganesha, Bhairava, and Bhairavi. In front of the temple are a small tank, a lamp stand, and a square platform. There is a pond in front of the temple, and as you descend from the pond towards the bastion, the remains of the administrative building can be seen near the bastion. Further ahead, there is a pushkarani (a sacred water tank), and beyond the pushkarani, there is a bastion. And there is a secret door in the rampart near it.

Bastions and other structures As you walk towards the bastion visible from the secret door, there are remains of ruined structures on the left. Further ahead, at the northern tip of the fort, is the ‘Fatteh Burj’ (Victory Bastion). After visiting the Fatteh Burj, if you continue walking straight ahead for a short distance, you will see a row of water tanks. There is an underground water tank here.Beyond the water tanks is a lime kiln, and from there, our exploration of the fort is complete upon reaching the fort’s entrance. It takes about an hour and a half to walk around the entire fort. The bastions of the fort have been named. There are a total of 6 bastions: ‘Shirwale Buruj’ in the southeast, ‘Patane Buruj’ and ‘Damgude Buruj’ in the west, ‘Baghjai Buruj’ in the north, and ‘Fatte Buruj’ and ‘Sadarcha Buruj’ in the east.

Rohida Fort how to reach ?

Via Bazarwadi Bazarwadi is a village located 8 to 10 kilometers south of Bhor. ST bus service is available to reach Bazarwadi. From behind the school in Bazarwadi, you can reach the first gate of the fort in half an hour to an hour by a prominent footpath.

Via Ambawade ST bus services are available from Bhor to Ambawade. You can also travel by bus from Pune to Bhor, Panvel, and Ambawade. Get off at Ambawade village and start climbing the fort from the ridge on the east side of the village. This path is long and slippery. It takes about two and a half hours to reach the fort by this route. If possible, go up the fort via Bazarwadi and come down via Nazare or Ambawade. This will make it easier to get to Raireshwar Fort.

There are many routes from Rohiḍa to Raireshwar Fort. 1) Via Bhor-Kari: Travel by bus from Bhor to Kari and get off at Kari village. From there, you can reach the Raireshwar plateau in 2 hours via the Lohan Dara route. It will take another half hour to reach the settlement on the plateau.

2) Via Vadthumbi: Take the Bhor to Titeghar bus that arrives in Ambawade at 2:45 PM. Get off at the Vadthumbi Phata stop and you will reach Vadthumbi village in 15 minutes. From there, you can reach the Raireshwar plateau in 2 hours via the Ganesh Dara route.

3) Via Bhor-Korle: Take the Bhor to Korle bus and get off at Korle village. If it gets late, stay overnight in the village and reach the Raireshwar temple on the plateau in 3 hours via the Gaydara route at dawn. 4) Via Bhor-Dabekghar: Take the Bhor to Dabekghar bus and get off at Dabekghar. From there, walk to Dhanawali. Then, you can reach Raireshwar in 3 hours via the Vaghdara route.

Rohida Fort Trek (Vichitragad Trek)

Me : OMG my hair looks so perfect !!

Wind : One second Girl.

Reading this while browsing some random quote pages on the internet, explained the exact emotion I had while I was on my last trek to Rohida fort. If you ever want to follow the quote “ Going where the wind blows ”, trust me this is the adventure you should look out for. Before letting you know about my windy experience, let’s just check out some basic information about Rohida aka Vichitragad Fort:

Rohida fort trek

This was not my first visit to this fort but the third time and the second one in monsoons. I was very much aware of the wind encounters I am going to witness which I had experienced two years back too. And the winds didn’t disappoint me at all. The winds on the trek path of the fort are too strong

  • powerful at some points. You can even see waterfalls flowing in upward direction because of the force of the wind and that’s how powerful they are. It might happen that you may have ear ache or even a headache due to continuous strong blows going around you but no worries you will be totally okay after few minutes of the climb or once you reach the fort. The experience of witnessing these winds is very exhilarating and also gives you Goosebumps at different points of time. If these winds are combined with rain, it might be little painful because it sometimes hit you hard on the by ecthis is something worth experiencing.

The name of the Rohida Fort is kept after the Rohideshwar God and you can even visit the temple of the god on the fort. I am not sure where from the other name “Vichitragad” came up, tried browsing the internet but couldn’t find any valuable information about the same. May be because of the flow of the winds they thought it was weird but that’s just my assumption.

We had our breakfast at Bhor village in a restaurant named Hotel Sai Raj and to be true the food was okay- okay. The options were Poha, Idli Sambhar, Vada Sambhar & Misal. Due to pre-booking, our group breakfast was arranged in a small room and not in the main restaurant area .A little private space for the group where we had our small introduction session along with the breakfast .As we were a group of 12 people we pre-ordered our lunch and left for the base village Bajarwadi.

While searching for the way we missed the correct right turn to the school which is the parking spot for the fort and ended up in the village. We asked them about the school and they informed us that

there are two schools and which school we were looking for. We thought it’s better to ask about Rohida fort rather than school and then we were guided perfectly. We reached and parked the tempo traveller in the ground of Bajarwadi Primary School which turns into a parking space for all the trekkers coming to visit the fort. There were already three four vehicles parked letting us know that few trekkers were already on their way to the fort. There were two kids who were charging for parking and had proper receipt from Gram Sanstha. For four wheelers the charge was around Rs. 40. The ground also had washrooms separately for both the genders but the cleanliness and hygiene cannot be guaranteed. Rainy season also creates a little mess but though I think we should be thankful that at least washrooms existed which is actually not on the expected list while going for treks. But if we consider the school premises, the cleanliness should be taken care of. Also in the outside area of the ground, there was a small tea stall. So if you are a tea lover and you ever plan to visit this place, you can have a cup of tea with a blissful hill views.

We started the trek and it was already raining, everyone packed themselves in their raincoats and ponchos to remain dry at least for some time. One of our trekker was carrying an umbrella but I was wondering if this umbrella would pass the upcoming wind test. He used the umbrella to click pictures without damaging his cell phone from rains, smart move and double usage of umbrella. The route is pretty amazing with a view of waterfalls on the left and the right both and monsoon green farmlands everywhere around. After a little trek if you see back and down, there is a view of small houses with brick colour, green agricultural lands, roads all wet, soil in its dark brown fresh colour, a scene of a sleeping town just like you must have read in some novels or books .A perfect picture of a peaceful and calm village. I think lot of us will envy the people staying around these hills, the place is really a heaven in the monsoons. There are lot of spots where in you can get good pictures with beautiful landscapes.

The trek to entrance of the fort will approximately take one and half hour or little more depending how many wind breaks or picture breaks you take. There are also benches been set up on the way to probably catch your breath and take a short break .Although some benches have been placed in a tilted manner, making it little uncomfortable to sit. Once you reach the entrance, climb the rocky stair and there is a fort gate, cross the gate and you will find the sign boards and fort information. Go straight till the end point or take a left to visit the temple.

fort Rohida magnificent views

The fort is very peaceful with lot of small water tanks, bastions giving away the mesmerizing views of the valley and a temple which can accommodate around 5-6 people if you plan for a night stay. The whole fort can be covered in a span of an hour. There is also a caretaker in the temple, who would probably record your experience and group details in the register. This is the only place on the fort if you are looking for a shelter. We had our little snack session, just outside the temple premises. The fort is well maintained and clean but the water tanks needs some cleanliness. While roaming around the grass, please make sure you put up your feet on the hard ground. There are few spots where in there are potholes but they are not visible due to high grown grass. And also the excitement of picturesque views can distract you from the ground reality.

The effect of the winds in full force was witnessed while we were coming back. There were times when I thought I will actually be blown away as the force was so strong and my raincoat was making it more difficult. It was uncontrollable due to the winds. There was a group of school kids probably of class 3 or 4 and they were jumping from one stone to other. There were around 3 leaders to monitor

a group of 25-30 kids which I thought was very less considering the age and the kind of trek it turns out to be in return. We could see fear on the faces of few kids because of the way wind was playing hide and seek with every alternate turn. Few kids were just saved from slipping down on stones due to combination of rain & winds. The group of trekkers on the way up and down and our group too were helping these kids to go through this windy phase.

Everything went well and we were back at the base all drenched in water. The parking space now was lot more noisy and the number of vehicles had also increased. The kids group had occupied the open halls of the school to have their packed lunch. The space looked much more happening than it seemed in the morning. Few groups were preparing to start with the trek.

After the change of clothes, we left for Hotel Sai Raj for our lunch. The lunch was far better, it was Veg Thali with combination of Roti, Sabji of Aalo & Matki, Rice, Dal, chawal, Papad & pickle. One of the trekker had got Son-Papdi and everybody enjoyed the sweet in the traveller. As I always say, if you find good food after a good trek it is a day well spent.

This time we decided to play Dumb charades on the return journey. Some unheard Bollywood movies were enacted and imaginations of people were revealed while guessing the movies. At end of every trip and trek, I always ponder on the beauty of these excursions. At the start of the day, people knew each other in groups of four or three or two and while we were returning we all were part of one gang joking around on the jokes not related to anyone but on the situations and the atmosphere around. The conversations were about what we experienced, trek, acting skills & talent witnessed while playing the games, sharing the dessert and so many infinite small things connecting one with another. Another chapter comes to an end as we reached pune but the memorable pictures will always remind us of the thrilling experience we had together on this awesome windy trek to Rohida aka Vichitragad Fort. Do let me know if you ever got to know the reason behind this name.

Join us for exciting trek experience and become part of our Stay Delight family.

Keep Reading Keep Trekking!

– Shubha Kankaria

Trek to Rohida Fort – the windy fort

by Rajaram Sethuraman · Jul 20, 2017

Rohida fort near Bhor is famous for its wind. I had heard about it many times and felt that it could be an exaggeration. It wasn’t 🙂

Trek to Rohida Fort near Bhor

Rohida fort was one of the forts captured by Sivaji. It is not very big in size, but interesting enough to trek to.

Trek to Rohida Fort

Route to Rohida Fort from Pune (Magarpatta City): It is a comfortable 2 hr drive from Magarpatta. For those living near the highway, the easiest way is to get on the bangalore highway and drive down in the direction of Mahabaleshwar. I took the route through Saswad and Narayanpur because it is more scenic in this season. The base village is Bajarwadi and once you enter it, you will see a huge clearing on the right meant to serve as a parking place for vehicles. The parking charges are forty rupees per vehicle. The village administration has also constructed public toilets at this parking place.

rohida fort trek difficulty level

It will take around 1.5 hrs to reach the top, with lot of photo stops. The climb is gradual and easy. There are some sections in the middle where it can get slushy when it rains (and it was when we went), but there are side routes available to bypass them (just look around!). There wasn’t any stretch where we faced any major difficulty, even while carrying Advika.

Trek to Rohida Fort

The best part about this fort is the wind. During the climb, there is a flat section where the cross-wind is amazing! You really have to be watchful to make it across without slipping.

Rohida Fort

Once you reach the fort, there are three gates (darwazas). This part needs a little care as the steps are in a broken condition and they are a bit tall. Once on the top, there is a trail to take you around the periphery of the fort. It will take around an hr to have a leisurely stroll. There are 6 watchtowers around the fort – lot of photo ops! After you cross the third one, the wind picks up GREATLY. That section was fun as well as scary. You are walking literally on the edge with the wind howling like crazy. The wind was blowing into the fort and hence our fear was a bit lesser. Not sure if it ever flows in the other direction. But if it is does, can be very dangerous. We started from home at around 7 am and finished the trek (back at the base village) by around 12.30 pm. So, this is a relaxed day trip and fun one for all ages. This is a short video i made about the trip. Check it out here.

Wonderful video. Thanks for practical useful details (as usual!). Just to be sure, is this Bajarwadi village reachable right after Narayanpur Balaji Temple? I might go from Bangaluru highway from Pune.

Photo of Rohitkumar Thakur

Rohida Fort

Difficultly : Easy

Time :30 minutes-1 hour from bajarwadi, 2 hours from Ambawade

Endurance : Easy

Photo of Rohida Fort, Pune, Maharashtra, India by Rohitkumar Thakur

Bhor region is like heaven for trekkers specially for people who lives in Pune. It contain beautiful mountain trail run by Sahyadri. Kenjalgad, raireshwar, Rohida fort.

Rohida fort known as Vichitragad or Binicha Killa is one of best in regions specially in monsoon. It also know as windy fort due heavy wind flow on the top in rainy season.

Information :

Historic reference shows that fort was made in Yadav period. Shivaji Maharaj fought battle with bandals and won this fort. in year 1666 , fort was give to Mughals as per Treaty of Purandar but as happpened with other forts Shivaji Maharaj won control over this fort as well.

Places to see :

Rohideshwar Mandir : Temple of ‘Lord Rohidmalla’ or ‘Bhairoba’ in marathi language. Idols of ‘Lord Ganesh’, ‘Bhairoba’ and ‘Bhairavi’ can be seen inside the temple. A small water tank and some square tombs are resting in front of the temple.

Bastion on the fort - Most of the bastions on the fort are intact. Total 6 bastions available on fort and standing undilapidated till date

Main door : A series of Ganesh idols visible on the frame of the first entrance gate which also has an arch on top. one needs to go through three gates to reach top of fort.

Water Cisterns : Water is available throughout the year.

How to reach :

Via bajarwadi : This is most preferable and easy way to reach fort. To reach via public transport one need to catch bus to Bhor from Swargate ST stand. From Bhor ST stand you get bus to reach Bajarwadi.

Base village

Photo of One day trek to Rohida / Vichitragad fort - Trekking place near Pune by Rohitkumar Thakur

Via Ambawade/ hatnoshi : Please avoid going through this route as route is very steep and takes around 2 hours. Also there nothing extraordinary views to see in route. To reach via public transport one need to catch bus to Bhor from Swargate ST stand. From Bhor ST stand you get bus to reach Ambawade.

If you are coming via private vehicle once you enter bhor you'll board for rohida fort first avoid taking right turn (mistake which we made) and instead ask route for bajarwadi, its just 2-3km from that board.

Things to carry:

1 ltr water each person

dry snacks or biscuit

My experience : We were total 8 people for trek myself, my bother and his friends It was my first trek for in monsoon. As it was rainy season we left pune around 8 am towards bhor for ride of 80 km. We took a break after 50 km for breakfast and chaha.

View at start of route

Photo of One day trek to Rohida / Vichitragad fort - Trekking place near Pune by Rohitkumar Thakur

After crossing bhor phata we made a mistake instead of reaching bajarwadi village we took a right turn at first sign board and reach hatnoshi village instead, we were unaware of the name base village that lead to this confusion.

We started a trek around 10 am, so we realized after around 1 hour that we started trek from wrong side , going back was not a good option. As it was rainy season so we were not feeling tired as well. We reached waghjai temple in next 5 minutes, rested for some and continue trek after that.

Waghjai Temple

We reached entrance of fort in 2 hours and started exploring fort.

Base village from top

Photo of One day trek to Rohida / Vichitragad fort - Trekking place near Pune by Rohitkumar Thakur

It was raining heavily and we were unable to see anything beyond 20-30 meters due to fog in whole trek , same situation was after reaching fort. But as we wanted to explore fort and enjoy view so we waited some time at each point for fog to disappeared . It took us around 1 and half hour to explore fort.

Photo of One day trek to Rohida / Vichitragad fort - Trekking place near Pune by Rohitkumar Thakur

After that we started descend from bajarwadi side and regretted decision to ascend from another side, view from bajarawadi was so breathtaking and amazing.

We reached bajarwadi in 20-25 minutes and walk to our point where we parked bikes for 15-20 minutes and left for pune.

While coming back we stopped at necklace point which I explored in summer as well Necklace point is near Bhatgar dam in Bhor area, it’s a location where Nira river and Gunjawani river embrace each other at a prominent place and create a Necklace shaped meander.

It is connected by train also to the Malavali station. It’s a trek where you can even take younger kids with you. A few years back, there’s a road that was build halfway to the fort thus making it more accessible. The fort has some caves on top that can be explored.

It’s a different feeling of accomplishment for may trekkers to be able to reach the highest point in the state. Torna Fort Trek

Torna was my very first monsoon trek near Pune about 20 years back. Unlike most other treks, it has a unique wind tunnel that forms on the ridge. Located about 75 km’s from Pune, the base village is called Velhe. Very recently, the government has built a road up to the first ridge of Torna, reducing the trekking time to 2.5 hours as compared to the earlier 4 hours. It’s a beautiful trek and a must recommended trek for all trekking enthusiasts in Pune.

Irshalgadh Fort

Irshalgad Fort Trek

I first did the Irshalgadh trek in 2012. That time it wasn’t a very popular trek. However, in recent years, it has gained popularity because of the proximity to Mumbai and Pune. One can reach the base of the fort in 2 hours from Pune using the expressway. It has a unique pinnacle on the top and is also a twin fort to the famous Prabalgadh. It’s a fairly easy trek and recommended for children and families as well.

Visapur Fort Trek

Visapur Fort Trek

The Visapur Fort is a twin fort to the Lohaghad fort. They have exactly the same approach almost until halfway. Once you reach the common halfway point, Visapur would be on your left, and Lohaghad will be on your right. It’s a popular monsoon trek near Pune as the final climb is through a waterfall and a lot of fun. The top is a huge plateau with a big area to walk around and explore.

The Harishchandragad trek is undoubtedly one of the most popular treks in the Sahyadri range. This is primarily because of the famous Konkan Kada, which offers one of the best views of the Konkan. The trek is difficult and long and a lot of trekkers use to stay here overnight. However 2 years back, the government officials have put a restriction on overnight camping here, so one has to go up and come down the same day which is possible if you are a reasonably seasoned trekker. Won’t recommend this fort for beginners and children.

Andharban trek

Andharban Trek

Literally translating into the Dark Forest, Andharban Trek is a very popular trek around Pune. The trail is about 14 km long and most part of it is covered under dense forests. I would personally advise doing this trek just at the beginning of the monsoon, end of the monsoon, and in winter. Avoid the trek during peak monsoon as there are chances of landslides during that time.

Tips for Monsoon treks near Pune:

Trek with friends.

Do not trek alone in the monsoons. The trails are often slippery and you should always have friends or a group around you while trekking, especially in the monsoon.

Use good shoes

Avoid trekking in floaters and use shoes with a good grip. Trails are more slippery and shoes will protect from getting a twisted ankle or an injured toe.

Check the weather forecast

If very heavy rainfall is predicted the avoid going for a trek. Heavy monsoon sometimes can cause a landslide or can result in the closing of a trekking route, so always check the forecast and venture out.

Pack extra clothes

The monsoon around Pune is heavy and can drench you completely. We suggest carrying an extra change of clothes as travelling back home completely drenched and can make you fall sick.

Keep hydrating

The monsoon season is very pleasant, unlike summer, however, keep drinking water and keep yourself hydrated since your body is doing a lot of hard work, it would always need water, irrespective of the season.

Look out for each other and always keep safety the first priority, especially on monsoon treks. Keep to the main trails and don’t try new routes on the rainy season.

15 Famous Forts Near Pune That Must be on Your Bucket List

Budget Hotels > Travel Blog > Destinations > Pune > 15 Famous Forts Near Pune That Must be on Your Bucket List

“Forts are the very basis of a kingdom. They are the real treasure, the real wealth of a kingdom. They are our best form of defense against the enemies. Forts themselves are the kingdom.”

Ramchandra Pant Amatya, finance minister of Chhatrapati Shivaji

Be it the Marathas, Yadavas, or Chalukyas, rulers of almost every dynasty in Maharashtra gave tremendous importance to the construction and maintenance of forts. That’s one of the reasons you will find a fort in every nook and cranny of Maharashtra. Pune is a city that has a large number of forts around it. Many of these forts were built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the great Maratha warrior king.

Today, these forts that are a testimony to the epic battles that went down in history, attract a large number of tourists from all parts of the country and the world. In fact, some of these are popular trekking hotspots too. So whether you are a history buff, trekking enthusiast, or simple tourist like me who loves to explore new places , here’s a list of the top forts near Pune that must be on your bucket list.

Forts near Pune within 100 km:

The 2000-year old fort has been the site of many battles, with the Battle of Sinhagad (1670) being the most notable of all. The fort was named ‘Lion Fort’ (Sinhagad) to honor the sacrifice of Tanaji Malusare (right hand of Chhatrapati Shivaji) who lost his life while fighting the Mughals in the battle. The fort, built on the top of a hill, offers an amazing view of the lush greenery surrounding it. Pune Darwaza and Kalyan Darwaza are the two entrances to the fort, with the former being the main entry point for visitors. There are a few temples and a memorial built for Tanaji Malusare inside the fort. Click here to know places to visit with 100km

Although there is a motorable road till the entrance, trekking to it is preferred by many youngsters. The 13-km trek has a medium difficulty level which makes it one of the best forts near Pune for trekking.

2. Purandar Fort, Pune

Purandar Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Purandar Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Located around 4500 feet above sea level, Purandar Fort was the birthplace of Sambhaji, the son of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The fort is of great historical significance as it marks Shivaji’s rise against the Mughals and Bijapur Sultanate. However, Shivaji was not the only ruler of the Purandar Fort, as it was the Yadava dynasty which constructed it in the 11 th century.

An hour-and-half drive amidst the picturesque Western Ghats range will take you to this huge hilltop fort. On reaching the fort, you will notice that the fort has been divided into two distinct levels – the upper level known as Ballekilla and the lower level known as the Machi . Both the upper and lower levels house temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Purandareshwar, the fort’s patron deity.

Besides being a popular tourist spot , a part of the fort is used as the training academy of National Cadet Corps. The place is also a hotspot for paragliding and trekking, giving you another reason to come here.

3. Tikona Fort, Pune

Tikona Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Tikona Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Tikona Fort, meaning triangular fort, derives its name from its pyramidal shape. It is a major hill fort in the Maval region near Lonavala, built during the Silhara dynasty’s rule. Nestled in the lap of the Sahyadri Ranges, this 3500-feet high (altitude) hill fort has its colossal entrance as its major highlight. Besides this, it is also popular for its Trimbakeshwar Mahadev temple, seven water tanks, Satavahana-era caves, and a breathtaking view of Pawna Dam.

The nearest starting point for the hike to Tikona Fort is the parking area near Tikona Peth, the base village for the excursion. The trek is safe, and it will take you around an hour to reach the entrance of the fort. From here, the journey becomes a lot exciting as the steps to the top are very narrow. It is, therefore, advisable to avoid climbing the fort in large groups.

4. Lohagad Fort, Pune

Lohagad Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Lohagad Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Popularly known as the ‘Iron Fort,’ Lohagad Fort is a perfect convergence of rich historical legacy and exquisite natural beauty. It enjoys an intriguing history under several dynasties, with the majority of time spent under the Marathas and a short interval under the Mughals. If you happen to travel to the fort during monsoon, you will see the fort’s top covered with clouds and moss. Though monsoon is an excellent time to visit from a scenic point of view, you must take precaution because the roads and trails leading to it get slippery.

Entry to the fort is possible by four major Darwajas (doors), out of which Hanuman Darwaja is said to be the oldest. The main premises of the fort houses an old dargah and Laxmi Kothi where the treasure of Nana Phadnavis, an influential Maratha minister, was kept. When visiting the Lohagad Fort, one should not miss out on the nearby Karla Caves, Aamby Valley City and Bhaja caves.

Tung Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Tung Fort is known for its breathtaking beauty.  It stands at an elevation of 3526 feet above sea level and is surrounded by water on three sides. Tung Fort is referred to as Kathingad Fort because of its conical shape, and steep steps. What’s more is that the fort is accessed via a narrow path carved into a fairly vertical cliff, which makes it a difficult climb.

The Adil Shahi dynasty built it in the 17 th century, but the great ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj captured it. Its small size ensured that troops could not be garrisoned in the fort. The fort was a perfect hideaway from invaders because of its beauty and difficulty of access. Local Maratha inhabitants loved this fact because it gave troops in neighboring forts time to arm themselves to fight off an attack by outsiders. Indeed, at one time it served as a watchtower for the great Maratha dynasty.

Tung Fort is located near the Tungwadi village, which is also accessible from Lonavala. It is a climb of approximately 300 meters from the village to this fort, and travel is difficult because the only road leading to the fort is rough and unfinished.

Kenjalgad Fort | Forts near Pune within 100 km

Located on an irregular hilltop, Kenjalgad Fort is a rhomboid fort that can be seen from a long distance as one approaches it. It was built by the Bhoj rulers during the 12 th century, and it was later captured by several rulers, with the British finally taking it over in from the Marathas in 1818. And although the fort resembles a derelict façade, as a large part of it was dismantled by the British, its walls are still standing tall, overlooking a beautiful valley. The sight of the clouds covering the fort during the rainy season will leave you awestruck.

The fort isn’t fully accessible by cars due to poor road condition beyond crossing Bhor village, which is around 25 km from the fort. There are two routes to the fort: one starts from a col joining Kenjalgad and Raireshwar Plateau, and the other from Ghera Kenjal, which serves as the base village.  A reasonable hour-long trek from Ghera Kenjal will lead you to the summit of the plateau. Although the trek route is safe, attention should be paid to the slippery patches in between. It is advisable to carry food and water on the trek owing to the shortage of shops on the route.

The fort was unknown for long until Shivaji Maharaj incorporated it into his kingdom in 1657. The fort remained under the Maratha empire before getting captured by the British in 1818.

There is a temple dedicated to a local deity, Korai Devi, and many other small temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva inside the fort. The 2-km defensive wall is the main highlight of the fort. It is completely intact, and you can walk along its perimeter. Besides these and several other structures, there are six cannons inside the fort, with Laxmi Toph being the largest of all.

As there’s no motorable road to the fort, you need to park your vehicle at the parking provided near the bus stop in Peth Shahpur village. From here you need to trek to the top. As it’s an easy climb, even beginners can undertake the hike without difficulty. If you want to enjoy the mesmerizing view of the surroundings, we recommend taking a day trek to the fort during summer. If you wish to stay overnight, there are many camping sites on the fort, including Korai Devi Temple that can accommodate around 25 people.

Situated near Tamhini Ghat, the 300-year-old Ghangad Fort was a sort of jail used for housing prisoners. It was under the Maratha empire until March 1818, post which they had to surrender it to the British. The fort has two main gates with the arch of the main entrance missing. The place offers a panoramic view of Tailbaila, Mulshi Dam, Korigad and Sudhagad Fort. Ghangad offers one of the best camping sites in the region with ample space for setting up tents, making bonfires and cooking food.

The trek to this fort is relatively easy from the base village of Ekole. There is a cave around 45 minutes from the starting point of the trek, after which the ascent becomes slightly cumbersome. Kothaligad Fort is a 3100-feet high fort situated in the Karjat area of Maharashtra. It is also called Peth Fort because of its proximity to the Peth village. Its short height and easy climbing make it a popular fort near Pune for trekking. And though it is possible to drive to the Peth village, we recommend you trek from Ambivali to Kothaligad to come across some stellar viewpoints along the way.

The fort enjoys an eventful historical background that includes the reign shift from the Marathas to the Mughals to the British. And, although the Marathas did manage to capture the fort from the British, that was for a very short span of time (less than two months). According to locals, Kothaligad Fort is not a fort, but a lighthouse (or a watch tower) that was used to give information about the advancement of the enemy.

Around two to three hours of strolling around are enough to check out every nook and corner of this architectural beauty and its majestic surroundings. The best time to visit is around March and September as the weather remains pleasant during these periods.

Mohangad Fort Trek

Mohangad Fort Trek lies in Pune district in Maharashtra. It is often spoken about as a twin of Kavlya fort. It lies at an altitude of 3608 ft in the Varandha Ghats. The Mohangad fort trek is also known as Jaslodgad fort trek. The fort goes by two more names, Jaslodgad and Durgadicha Killa or the fort of Janani hill.

Mohangad fort was built for the protection of the ghats that were the important trade links back in hostory. During the war of Pratapgad, Shivaji Maharaja wrote a letter to Bajiprabhu Deshpande informing that the Jaslodhgad fort which was unused for a long period must be repaired and renamed as Mohangad and a garrison of 5 to 25 soldiers should be stationed. In 2008, the letter of Sachin Joshi of Pune discovered that the Durgadi/Janani hill is none other than Mohangad itself.

The difficulty level of Mohangadh Fort Trek is medium. It is a hill fort, located in the Pune district of Maharashtra. Varandha ghat was one of the most important trade route which connected Mahad in the Konkan region to Bhor. The base village of Mohangad is Durgadi. The fort itself was known as Durgadi fort and the mountain is named after Goddess Janani.

There is a Janani Mata temple on the fort. A trail descending next to the temple takes you down to three water cisterns carved into a rock. Out of the three tanks, two are covered in soil and the third one contains water. The temple can accommodate four to five people.

At the back of the temple there is a waiting area to go to the top. Apart from these and a small square hidden in the grass at the top, there are no other remnants on the fort. Hirdus Maval, Rajgad, Torna, Mangalgad, Kavalya and Rayareshwar plateaus are visible from the top of the Mohangad Fort trek.

Reach the Hanuman Temple in Durgadi village. A dirt trail on the right side of the road leads to the Janani Devi temple on the hill behind the village. The villagers have recently built a temple of the Goddess on the fort on this hill. This distance is about 1.5 km. You can reach this temple by private vehicle. This reduces the climb to the fort by half an hour.

A trail from back of the temple leads you to the top of the Jaslodgad fort trek or Mohangad fort trek. The trail is well paved as it is in use by the villagers. Once you gain some height in this trail, you can see the spread of the fort. The trail eventually meets the trail from Shirgaon. The trail ascending to the fort is unmistakable  and has stone steps in certain places.

If attempting this trek from Shirgaon, the route is well marked. There are markings on the trees. The trail from here passes through two or three plateaus.

How to Reach

Trekkers need to reach Mahad on the Mumbai-Goa highway. On the path of the Mahad-Bhor route start ascending Varandha Ghat. Take the diversion to the right for Durgadi Village after 10 km. In this village, the path which rises from the last temple takes us to the fort.
