Table of liveaboard diving in the Red Sea
This list of Red Sea liveaboards is in descending customer rating order, followed by Scuba Diving Luxury Rating (SDE Lux Rating, see below) , so the liveaboards with the highest customer rating and the best SDE lux rating will be at the top of the list. If you want to change the list order, use the “ Sort by ” dropdown below.
Please select a column to search in.
Please type in something to search for.
The Scuba Diving Earth Luxury Rating (SDE Lux Rating) is explained on each liveaboard review when you click the “Discover Liveaboard” link, and is my own Liveaboard Luxury Rating I’ve assigned to all liveaboards . Choosing between liveaboards is helped by customer scores, and if you get stuck choosing between two or three liveaboards, where each one has a high customer score out of 10, you can use the SDE Luxury Rating to help narrow down your choice.
Think about it like using Booking.com when searching for the best hotel. Booking.com also use a customer score where each customer rates hotels out of 10. This is similar to the liveaboard customer rating, which is also rated out of 10. But let’s say you only like to stay in hotels rated 8 and above on Booking.com, but you also want the hotel to have WIFI or parking, or to have a swimming pool etc. The features each hotel has is usually secondary to the score out of 10.

We’re Going Wild For Wolves
There’s a magical place in northern Canada, at the intersection of the southern Hudson Bay and the Boreal Forest, where polar bears and wolves cohabitate. This otherworldly location, also known as the Kaska Coast, is where our Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is located.
For 10 years, we’ve offered polar bear safaris at this lodge, and now we’re launching our first wolf safari: Cloud Wolves of the Kaska Coast .
Developed in partnership with National Geographic photographer Jad Davenport , this citizen-science safari will give guests the opportunity to observe, track, and photograph wild gray wolves. Jad has spent a lot of time at Nanuk and states that there’s no better place in the world for wolf photography.
Wolf in light snow at Nanuk. Gillian Lloyd photo.
“I’ve photographed wolves in Yellowstone, Denali and the Yukon, but the encounters there are distant, and you’re usually shoulder-to-shoulder with dozens and dozens of other people; it doesn’t feel wild. At Nanuk it’s just you and your fellow guests watching as the wolves hunt, play, court and, of course, howl, often right in front of the lodge. It’s the only place I’ve ever had wolves approach me when I was on foot and get to within a few meters; I had to shoot photos with a wide-angle lens. That never happens anywhere else.”
Taking place in late November, this safari will also offer the chance to see and photograph polar bears if they haven’t yet headed out to the sea ice.

Wolves are a highly revered and enigmatic species, and this safari will give guests a greater understanding of their behaviours during daily excursions and guided observations.
Our unique location and impeccable track record for ethical wildlife viewing have allowed us to develop this one-of-a-kind safari.
Nanuk Polar Bear Lodge is hundreds of kilometres from any town or permanent settlement, so these wolves are not habituated to humans, nor have they had reason to be fearful of us. Our non-invasive approach to wildlife encounters means they, and all other area wildlife, has taught them that we are not a threat.
Northern lights at Nanuk. Jad Davenport photo.
The wolves that live along the Kaska coastline are southern grey wolves, or canis lupus nubilus. Nubilus is Latin for ‘cloudy,’ a great descriptor for these beautiful animals whose coats come in all shades of gray, reminiscent of clouds.
These cloud wolves are quite large, possibly some of the largest in the world, and among the least studied. Anecdotal observations over the years have given us insights into the number of packs that live along this coastline, as well as pack and territory sizes. Now, with the help of Jad and our team of naturalist guides, we’ve put together a program to collect measurable data.
Jad has worked on citizen science expeditions around the world. From coral reef restoration in the Maldives to whale identification in the Antarctic, he’s been on the front lines for a number of research studies.
Wolf visiting guests at Nanuk. Jad Davenport photo.
On this safari, guests will have the opportunity to help us pioneer field studies on these wolves, answering questions such as: How many wolves inhabit the area? What influences their population? How many packs are there? Territories? What is their impact on the moose population? What is the relationship between wolves and polar bears? We’re also looking at possible DNA collection through scat and hair snares, track casting and audio studies.
We’re very excited to have Jad with us once again for this groundbreaking expedition!
Join us this fall and answer the call of the wild wolves.

I’m very excited to launch this wolf study with Churchill Wild. The wolves have always been such a highlight of my visits to Nanuk. Apart from us humans they are the most wide-ranging mammal on the planet and yet they are so rarely encountered in truly wild settings where they have no outside pressure on them. There’s nothing quite like hearing wolves howling under the Northern Lights.
Looking forward to this Jad! Should be yet another awesome adventure! Thanks!

Sakhalin Island Sea Wolf
- View history
Sakhalin Island Sea Wolf was a mutilated cetacean corpse that was found by Russian soldiers on the Sakhalin shoreline . Sakhalin area is situated near to Japan , it's the most eastern part of Russia , almost 5000 miles to East from Moscow. The Creature Has been indentified as a beluga carcass
According to a scientific survey, the bones and teeth are not of a fish. According to its skeletal remains, it was not a crocodile or alligator; its skull resembled that of a canine , while the creatures rear coincides with that of a fish. However the real identity can be concluded by looking at the skull, it's most likely some type of whale ; particularly a beluga or an orca, with the skull matching that of such creatures (the little notch in the skull being seen in one of the photos).

- This Cryptid is the direct inspiration for SCP-682. The "carcass" image was used to show what it looked like in a more destroyed form.
- The most likely explanation for this cryptid is that it's a decomposed whale.

Russia presses renewed border assault in northeast Ukraine as thousands flee
Updated on: May 13, 2024 / 4:30 AM EDT / CBS/AP
Russia's renewed ground offensive in Ukraine's northeast targeted towns and villages with a barrage of artillery and mortar fire, officials said Sunday. Thousands of civilians fled the Kharkiv region as the intense battle capitulated more land to Russian forces across less defended settlements in the so-called contested "gray zone" along the Russian border.
The town of Vovchansk, with a prewar population of 17,000, emerged as a focal point in the battle.
Volodymyr Tymoshko, the head of the Kharkiv regional police, said Russian forces were in the outskirts of the town and approaching from three directions. A Russian tank was spotted along a major road leading to the town, Tymoshko said, illustrating Moscow's confidence to deploy heavy weaponry.
Evacuation teams worked non-stop throughout the day to take residents, most of whom were elderly, out of harm's way.
At least 4,000 civilians have fled the Kharkiv region since Friday, when Moscow's forces launched the operation, Gov. Oleh Syniehubov said in a social media statement. Heavy fighting raged Sunday along the northeast front line, where Russian forces attacked 27 settlements in the past 24 hours, he said.
The Russian Defense Ministry said on Sunday that its forces had captured four villages, in addition to five villages reported to have been seized the day before.
These areas were likely poorly fortified due to the dynamic fighting and constant heavy shelling, easing a Russian advance.
Ukraine's leadership has not confirmed Moscow's gains. Instead, they said it was repulsing the attacks and battling for control of the settlements.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said halting Russia's offensive in the northeast was a priority, and that Kyiv's troops were continuing counteroffensive operations in seven villages around the Kharkiv region.
"Disrupting the Russian offensive intentions is our number one task now. Whether we succeed in that task depends on every soldier, every sergeant, every officer," Zelenskyy said.
A Ukrainian unit said that they had been forced to retreat in some areas.
Tymoshko said Russian tactics in Vovchansk mirrored those used in the battles for Bakhmut and Avdiivka in the Donetsk region in which heavy aerial attacks were accompanied by droves of infantry assaults.
In a video Saturday evening, the Hostri Kartuzy unit, part of the special forces' detachment of Ukraine's national guard, said that they were fighting for control of the village of Hlyboke.
"Today, during heavy fighting, our defenders were forced to withdraw from a few more of their positions, and today, another settlement has come completely under Russian control. As of 20:00, fighting for the village of Hlyboke is ongoing," the fighters said in the clip.
Analysts say the Russian push is designed to exploit ammunition shortages before promised Western supplies can reach the front line.
On Sunday, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken denounced Russia's rush into Kharkiv, saying the United States is doing "everything we can to rush this assistance out there."
"I'm convinced that Ukraine can effectively hold the line in the east, it can continue to press the advantages achieved for itself in the Black Sea, where it's getting as much out through the Black Sea, feeding the world as it did before the Russian re-invasion of Ukraine, as well as to hold Russian forces at risk, including in Crimea to make it more difficult for them to continue this aggression," Blinken told "Face the Nation " host Margaret Brennan on Sunday. "We've been providing the systems to do that, but it's a challenging moment. We are not going anywhere, and neither are more than some 50 countries that are supporting Ukraine. That will continue and if [Russian President Vladimir] Putin thinks he can outlast Ukraine, outlast its supporters. He's wrong."
Meanwhile, a 10-story apartment block collapsed in the Russian city of Belgorod, near the border, killing at least two people and injuring 20 others. Russian authorities said the building collapsed following Ukrainian shelling. Ukraine has not commented on the incident.

Shaab Marsa Alam
- Current: N in the morning, N at midday, N/E in the afternoon
- Visibility: J, F, M, A 25-35m, M, J, J, A 30-60m, S, O, N, D 50-80m
- Temperatures: J, F, M: 23-25°C; A, M, J: 26-28°C; J, A, S: 28-32°C; O, N, D: 28-24°C
- Depth: 30 m
This exciting reef is located 25 minutes off Marsa Alam. Here you will find a wreck, cavern systems and one of the most beautiful mountain coral gardens. Almost all the liveaboard boats that depart from Marsa Alam will make their first and maybe last dive of the safari here. Shaab Marsa Alam is also a nice place for night diving.
Description
Shaab Marsa Alam is 350m to 400m long and shaped like an inverted L. In the north it starts with 50m width and expands to 80m until the beginning of the lagoon in the middle. Then it continues on the east side with a width of 10 to 20m like a barrier to the south. There are some real sights: In the lower part of the lagoon, west of the barrier, at a depth of 12 to 15m, there are two coral blocks - a large one of 1 by 20m and a smaller one of 6 by 6m. They stretch from the northeast to the southwest and are so intergrown that they look like a reef of their own. They are nicely overgrown with hard and soft corals in the upper part. There is a small cavern system to explore. In the northeast you can still find the remains of a sunken safari boat. Here you will encounter crocodile fish, moray eels and schools of snappers. To the north and west there is another beautiful coral garden. Both contain cleaning stations, are dotted with sandy areas and are home to garden eels, schools of barbels, snappers and other reef fish. You can find moray eels, octopus, snails and cheeky nemos. Both sites are easiest to access by Zodiac. The way back to the boat is doable, in any case you make it in sight of the safari boat to be picked up by the Zodiac.
- Sha'ab Marsa Alam has a very special highlight to offer some of us: Diving with dolphins!
- Wreck: Diving to a wreck is always a very special highlight and here it is possible for every man and woman.
- Caves: The caves or caverns are located near the wreck and it is a real pleasure for us to be enchanted by the light shows here.
- Coral garden: We definitely can not miss the mountain coral garden - it is considered one of the most beautiful ever!
map Dive Plans
Colorful mountain coral world.
This part of the reef is a very large lagoon with mountain corals of all colors. They extend from east over south to west at a water depth of 5 to 20m. Let the Zodiac take you to the northeast corner and dive the coral garden relaxed towards the west. Actually the current should support you more, but just orientate yourself on the fish. The western tip should be surrounded, because behind it there is a chance to see dolphins.
Snails and eels
To the east is a slightly older coral field between 20 and 30m deep that is teeming with snails. In the middle is a large sandy area at 20m with garden eels and whitetip reef sharks. The Zodiac should drop you off at the northern end of the coral garden and the current should always be on your side. Diving south you can dive another big block if the air allows it.
Checkdive with caverns and wreck
In the southwest there is a gota (coral block), on the north side of which lies the wreck of a safari boat. The area around the gota has 10 to 15 meters of depth and is ideal to make the first dive of the safari. After the general exercises, you should just dive around the small reef and look at the wreck, as well as the caves: They are flooded with light, narrow in parts and stretch high up to three meters. Pay attention to your ears, then a visit is well worth it.
