Where do I download an older version of Safari for Windows

I need a specific version of Safari using WebKit 525.27; I have tracked it to Safari 3.2.1. The first Google hit on Apple points to:

However all the download links direct me to Safari 5. Are my only options to either build it myself from webkit.org or download it from an Internet archive like oldapps ?

I know this question has already been answered, but I like to give people options. Another option is filehippo.com. They have every version of a lot of programs out there including popular items such as Safari. Here is the link that would be relevant to this question. Below are some of the other very popular downloads that Filehippo has.

If you use a Mac or an iPhone, it’s hard to pick a different browser over Safari. It’s incredibly fast, uses minimal resources, and respects user privacy. But if you also use a PC, you won’t have the luxury of installing Apple’s flagship browser on Windows since the Cupertino-based tech giant does not develop Safari for the Windows PC. That’s a major issue when your gear consists of cross-platform products.

What you can do is install an older version of Safari on Windows 10 or 11, although we highly advise against that due to compatibility and security-related issues. The best and safest option is to sync your browsing data from Safari to Chrome or Edge on your PC via iCloud for Windows. Setting up macOS on your PC and using Safari that way is another feasible option.

Download and Install Safari on Your Windows PC

Apple halted the development of Safari for Windows in 2012. However, the final version of the browser (Safari v.5.1.7) is freely available on the internet, so you can quickly download and install it on your Windows 10 or 11 PC. The problem? It’s terribly slow and dated, lacks compatibility with most web apps, and poses security risks. You also can’t sync your browsing data, so it’s not a solution if you want to access bookmarks and passwords.

Regardless, the steps below will walk you through downloading and installing Safari on your Windows 10/11 PC. But unless you just want to have a feel of how Safari looked almost a decade earlier, we recommend you stay away from it.

1. Download the Safari installer from a software download portal such as Uptodown , Filehippo , or TechSpot . It weighs in at 36.7MB. Unfortunately, Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows, so you can’t get it from an official source.

2. Double-click the downloaded SafariSetup executable file.

3. Select Next on the Safari Setup’s Welcome screen.

4. Accept the license agreement and select Next .

5. Specify if you want to add Safari as a desktop shortcut or not. Also, decide if you prefer it as the default browser on your computer (we recommend you don’t select this option). Select Next to continue.

6. Pick an install directory (or leave the default folder path) and select Install .

7. Wait for the Safari installer to finish installing Safari on your computer. Then, select Finish .

After installing Safari, you can choose to open it by double-clicking the Safari icon on the desktop. Or, you can open it by selecting Safari on the Start menu’s programs list.

Despite being almost ten years old, Safari for Windows doesn’t look too out of place. To the top, you have the familiar URL bar (you can’t use it to perform searches, however), a Bookmarks strip underneath, and a dedicated Search bar on the left corner. By default, new tabs display frequently visiting sites in thumbnail format—you can use the Top Sites and History tabs to switch them and your browsing history.

Selecting the cog-shaped icon at the right corner of the screen reveals the Safari menu, where you can choose to customize the toolbar, access your browsing history, launch a private browsing window, and so on.

Selecting Preferences opens the Preferences pane, which provides options to modify the homepage, pick a default search engine, adjust privacy settings, manage extensions (although extensions support is non-existent), etc.

What the browser does not allow is to sign in with an Apple ID. That makes it impossible to sync your browsing data from an iPhone or Mac. Even if the functionality were present previously, Apple probably would’ve stopped you from signing in to it by now.

During our Safari tests on Windows, the browser started showing its age. Most websites took a long time to load, while web apps (such as YouTube and Google Maps) simply failed or prompted us to switch to a compatible browser. Other than for basic web browsing, it was practically useless.

Safari for Windows also hasn’t received security updates in almost a decade, so we recommend that you don’t attempt to use it for any sensitive activities such as banking or shopping.

Sync Safari Browsing Data via iCloud for Windows

If your gear consists of a PC and iPhone or Mac, you can sync your passwords and bookmarks from Safari with Google Chrome and vice-versa by installing iCloud for Windows. That’s the most convenient method for accessing your browsing data on each platform.

iCloud for Windows also offers password syncing for Microsoft Edge and bookmarks syncing for Mozilla Firefox. However, only Chrome receives support for both.

If you don’t have iCloud for Windows on your PC, you can get it via the Microsoft Store or the Apple website . If you already have it, make sure to upgrade it to at least version 12.5 or later (you can do that via the Microsoft Store’s Downloads and updates screen or by running the Apple Software Update applet).

With iCloud for Windows up and running, open the iCloud app and check the boxes next to Passwords and Bookmarks . You can also activate additional iCloud services such as Photos and Drive if you want.

Follow that by installing the iCloud Passwords on Google Chrome or Microsoft Edge. The former lets you insert and save passwords to the iCloud Keychain. You can also use the iCloud Passwords app (which installs automatically alongside iCloud for Windows) to manage your passwords in Windows. On the other hand, the iCloud Bookmarks extension syncs passwords between Chrome/Firefox and Safari.

Run Safari via a macOS Virtual Machine

If you want to use the most recent version of Safari on your PC (perhaps to test a feature or extension), the only way you can do that is by running macOS via virtualization software. However, the procedure is not convenient. For starters, Mac’s operating system is not natively supported by most VM software, so installation generally relies on workarounds relying on additional software. Also, it requires lots of free disk space and uses up system resources, not to mention that virtual machine guests generally run sluggishly compared to the host operating system.

If you still want to go ahead and install macOS, the easiest way to do that is by following the instructions within this macOS Virtualbox project on GitHub. It lets you install macOS Catalina as a virtual machine via a Bash script. We’ve condensed it into the following steps:

1. Download and install Oracle VM VirtualBox on your PC (it’s free).

2. Download and install Cygwin with the following dependencies (you can select them during installation).

3. Download the macos-guest-virtualbox.sh bash script from GitHub.

4. Open the Cygwin Terminal. Then, drag and drop the bash script and press Enter .

5. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

After the setup procedure, you can open and use Safari by selecting the Safari icon on the Mac’s Dock. Before you do that, however, it’s a good idea to update macOS and Safari. To do that, open the Apple menu and select System Preferences > Software Update > Update Now .

iCloud for Windows Is the Most Convenient

Although it’s possible to download and install Safari on your Windows 10/11 computer, we recommend you stray away from it. The security risks alone make it impractical, and it’s not like you can use it for any serious web browsing anyway due to compatibility issues.

Since the most likely reason you would want to install Safari involves syncing your passwords and bookmarks, using iCloud for Windows is the only viable alternative. But if you do have the time and just want to try out the latest version of Safari, your best option is to set up macOS as a virtual machine on your PC.

Apple Safari 5.1.7 for Windows

It was always something of a mystery why Apple chose to make Safari for Windows. Some said the company wanted to get Windows developers familiar with the iPhone's browser to encourage Web app development on iOS. But then why not just make it available to developers? In any case, the Windows version looks to be getting less emphasis than ever these days: While Safari for Mac was recently updated to version six, the Windows version no longer is even mentioned on Apple's Safari page. There's been widespread speculation that Apple has killed off Safari for Windows, but despite the hysteria, Safari is still available for download . Whatever the future may hold for it, Safari for Windows is gorgeous, still performs well, and adds some compelling differences from the general run of browsers, but it's falling behind in some measures such as startup time and hardware acceleration.

Safari would win the browser beauty pageant. Its Top Sites page, showing a 3D gallery of your most-visited sites, and its Cover Flow history view are pleasures to behold. The browser window radiates the tasteful, understated design prowess that has become a hallmark of the Cupertino tech luminary. And it's not just looks: Safari has respectable speed and standards support, too. Nevertheless, you still may occasionally run into a site that doesn't play as well as it would in Firefox (Free, 4 stars), Internet Explorer (Free, 4 stars), or Google Chrome (Free, 4.5 stars) .

A unique feature among browsers is Safari's Reading List. Summoned through a cute eyeglasses icon to the top and left of the Web page area, Reading List lets you save pages you're interested in but don't have time to peruse till later. It's really just a variant on a bookmark or history feature, but the left sidebar showing the site icons and titles for pages you add do make it easier to find. An oddity of the feature, though, is that, once you click on a page's entry to view it, the entry disappears from the list and you can't re-add it even if you didn't actually finish reading it. Luckily, you can recall pages with an "All" option in the sidebar.

Safari Reader Another reading helper, the "Safari Reader" mode, is an exclusive Safari feature that strips out non-essential elements of a page (including pictures and video) so you can focus on the text. The Reader view is a great boon for those vexed by constant text popups and distracting elements, which have more and more come to dominate the Web. For starters, Safari Reader saves you from installing an ad-blocker. Not only does Safari Reader block ads, it also attempts to display all pages of multipage articles in Reader view. To activate it, simply click the "Reader" button that appears in the address bar for pages that the browser has determined can benefit from it.

I tested by surfing to PCMag.com. Clicking the button produced what looked like a white sheet of paper with the article's text in a large readable serif font (I couldn't find a way to choose a different font). Occasionally, Reader missed the formatting of some elements within the text, like our rating buttons, and some articles still show the Next button instead of letting you scroll down the whole article. But mostly everything in the main text body displayed fine, including tables, and inline images, but the Reader button does not kick in for Flash pages. A superimposed toolbar appears at the bottom of the page, letting you easily zoom, email, print the cleaned up article. The browser will remember the zoom size you chose for next time.

A similar feature is now available in Maxthon 3.4 (free, 4 stars), and Opera is pushing for new HTML5 standards that will allow websites to reproduce reading experiences with gestures for page turning and text wrapping around images, called CSS Generated Content for Paged Media .

Search Options and Extensions Apple made Bing an optional search engine in Safari 5.0, which is a step in the right direction, considering Safari on the Mac long offered only one choice, Google (on Windows, Safari previously offered a choice between Google and Yahoo). This is an improvement, though IE and Firefox still offer more in the way of search choice, with galleries of more specialized search options (such as Wikipedia) and ways to switch search provider right from the search bar.

Apple announced that Safari 5 would support extensions starting with version 5, and at this point there's a helpful selection at the Safari Extensions Gallery. Safari extensions allow developers to add toolbars, menu items, and buttons to the app window or to modify web pages—more than Google Chrome extensions offer. Apple has even added an Extension Builder, accessible from the Develop menu (which you can enable from the Advanced settings tab).

Installing an extension in Safari is the easiest thing possible: Find the one you want in the gallery and click the Install Now button. That's it. Ad-blocking and Facebook cleaning top the list of popular extensions, but there are plenty of choices to appeal to all tastes, such as an MLB toolbar with game scores, a Twitter toolbar, and even a screenshot extension.

Tabs Safari does an excellent job of implementing tabs. You can move the tabs back and forth on the bar, and even out onto the desktop to create a new window. I also found it simple to drag a tab from one browser window into another. If you hover the mouse over a tab other than the current page displaying, the "X" for closing it helpfully appears—something you won't find in Maxthon. And now Safari's tabs show site icons (a nice visual cue) as they do in other major browsers.

Another minor disappointment is that the tab toolbar doesn't display by default—in most other browsers, opening a new tab is a simple matter of clicking a Plus sign next to your last tab. But the browser's new-tab page yields a beautiful 3D gallery view of your 12 most visited sites to choose from, much like Opera's Speed Dial. You can also get an Apple signature Cover Flow view of your history.

You can choose to have links always open in new tabs rather than in a new browser window, but I wish this were the default, as it is in most other browsers. Safari's address bar displays history and bookmark suggestions for any title text you start typing, as opposed to just text from the address—a help to faster navigation.

Windows Safari 5.1.7

I spoke to an Apple Support Rep last week and was told that the engineers are working on another update for Windows Safari 5.1.7. Is this true? Or, will I need to use Google Chrome from now on? I can't afford to get another iMac right now!
