Top 15 Ski Resorts in New York

New York State has more ski resorts than New Hampshire, Vermont, or even Michigan or Colorado. Ski NY says the total is 50-plus, and that means once you get an hour or more out of New York City, you can be pretty sure there's a ski mountain worth conquering nearby. Some of New York's ski areas remain fiercely independent. Others are now part of big, well-known operations like Vail Resorts. Whether you're treating your family to a ski weekend or meeting friends on the slopes, looking to take up a new winter sport, or capable of dominating a double-black diamond, this guide will help you choose from New York's wondrous bounty of ski resorts. Even if you have no intention of skiing, these destinations' add-on attractions, from snow tubing hills to indoor waterparks, may tempt you to plan a trip to a New York mountain where crisp, clean air and snowy scenes are practically guaranteed.

Whiteface Mountain

You may not have gold-medal skills, but you can ski the New York mountain that has hosted Olympic skiing competitions twice. Located near the village of Lake Placid, home to the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games, Whiteface looms large among the Adirondack High Peaks, and it offers skiers the highest vertical of drop of any lift-serviced mountain in the U.S. Northeast, as well as the region's longest run for intermediate skiers: the 2.1-mile Wilmington Trail. Stay, dine, and play in this picturesque and storied region, where more Olympic attractions await, including bobsled rides at Mt. Van Hoevenberg .

Gore Mountain

New York's largest ski resort is an unpretentious destination for old-school, awesome skiing on four distinct peaks. With breathtaking views of the snowy Adirondacks and new quad lifts that take you farther up the mountain to conquer even more terrain, Gore is a resort you can make your own, whether you're taking your first lesson or skilled and experienced enough to brave The Rumor: one of the steepest trails in the East. Eight terrain parks make this the domain of snowboarders, too. Your lift ticket includes access to Gore's original 1934 base camp, where there's more than nostalgia on offer. Here at the North Creek Snow Bowl, snowmaking and grooming ensure good conditions for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and twilight skiing or snowboarding at night under the stars and the lights is magical.

Holiday Valley

Maxine Power/Flickr

Located an hour's drive due south of Buffalo in a region that receives abundant natural "lake effect" snow, Holiday Valley has that "just right" feel for weekend warriors who want to hit the slopes. The resort is relatively small, but its 58 trails offer various scenery and challenges on four mountain faces. And its small-town home, Ellicottville , is the sort of charming winter village that looks like a Christmas movie set. With lively pubs and restaurants, including its own brewery and winery, Ellicottville's après ski scene is reason alone to consider a visit.

Hunter Mountain

betamax/Getty Images

In the Catskills, where Rip Van Winkle slept away 20 years, Hunter Mountain attracts most of its ski crowd from the city that never sleeps. Not only is Hunter the closest major ski mountain to NYC, but it's also the only New York property that is part of the Vail family of resorts, which means pass holders here have access to a world of top-notch skiing. Famous for its expert-level trails and extensive snowmaking that provides 100% coverage across 240 acres of skiable terrain, Hunter has evolved since its 1960 opening to offer wintertime activities for nonskiers, too, including lift-serviced snow tubing and high-flying, year-round thrills on North America's highest and longest zipline canopy tour .

Windham Mountain

Christian Zanetis/Getty Images

Home to the Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center , Windham is truly a mountain for everyone, where families bond not only on the ski slopes (there are 54 trails and 6 terrain parks) but on slick rides down the six-lane tubing hill, guided snowshoe treks, and even on the indoor Ski & Ride Simulator . This Catskill Mountains resort, just over a two-hour trip from NYC and typically less crowded than Hunter Mountain, is also the rare ski resort that is so confident in its snowmaking capabilities, they offer a snow guarantee . One of Windham's most unique offerings is a kids-only fleet of Arctic Cat snowmobiles, which riders 6 and over (and under 120 pounds) can take for a spin around an oval track. Another perk for serious skiers is the Boot Lab , where master boot fitter Marc Stewart customizes ski boots for comfort and performance.

Catamount Mountain Resort

Massachusetts Office of Travel and Tourism

Catamount's entrance is in Hillsdale, New York, but this small ski area with some spiffy new upgrades is actually partially in Massachusetts: It's one of only four ski resorts in the country that spills across state lines. Recently purchased by sister resort Berkshire East , it's an ideal place for beginner and intermediate skiers to get in a full day's worth of runs, as it's an easy, scenic drive from population centers in New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. Expert skiers will find seven trails that are their speed, too, including Catapult: a double black diamond that is the steepest downhill trail in the Berkshires.

Belleayre Mountain

lightphoto/Getty Images

Located in the Catskills in Highmount, New York, on land preserved by the state all the way back in 1885, Belleayre Mountain attracted skiers even before New York's first chairlift was installed here in 1949. Located a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Manhattan, it's a smaller, less crowded alternative to nearby Hunter Mountain with 50 trails, 5 glades, a terrain park for snowboarders, and 9.2 km of cross-country trails. Belleayre's strength is in its instructional programs for those who are new to skiing or riding. Beginners have their own area of the mountain with various trails, so there's no boredom as they build their skills.

Bristol Mountain

Once New York's Adirondack Mountains are in your rearview mirror, 2,200-foot Bristol Mountain in the Finger Lakes region is the tallest peak you'll encounter until you reach the Rockies. So, if you're looking for exhilarating skiing in western New York, this resort's 1,200-foot vertical rise and 38 slopes and trails across 138 acres are the end to your search. Two terrain parks and two cross-country skiing loops add to your winter sports options. You'll love starting your day with homemade Belgian waffles topped with New York maple syrup at the slopeside Morning Star Café and perhaps ending it with a glass of wine at one of the region's many vineyards.

Greek Peak Mountain Resort

If your kids get a vote, you're going to wind up in Cortland at central New York's largest ski resort. Even in darkest December, Greek Peak offers a mix of winter and summer fun. Its Cascades Indoor Waterpark is always a balmy 84 degrees. Outside, you'll find a family-friendly ski area with 56 trails and four terrain parks, a Nordic Center with more than 15 km of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails, a mountain coaster, and zip line tour that operate year-round, and a massive snow tubing center with more than 15 sledding lanes.

Mount Peter

The closest ski area to New York City is also the state's oldest, and that means when you ski Mount Peter, you'll be helping to sustain a beloved landmark that has welcomed skiers for 85 years. Located an hour north of the George Washington Bridge in New York's Orange County, this rare family-operated ski area has 14 trails and a snowmaking system that ensures the slopes are well-covered. If you're new to the sport, why would you go anywhere else when Mount Peter famously offers free beginner ski and snowboard lessons? If you're still reluctant to give skiing a go, try snow tubing instead on Mount Peter's lift-serviced hill.

West Point Victor Constant Ski Area

Feng Zhao/Getty Images

One of the most unique places to ski in New York State is at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point's own ski area, which is open to the public on a limited basis: Purchase your tickets online in advance. Located just outside the Academy's gates, this family-friendly hill has 100 percent snowmaking on its handful of trails that offer majestic views of the Hudson Highlands. With day and night skiing options priced as low as $19 for a twilight adult lift ticket, you'll love the affordability and the history of this ski area named for Capt. S. Victor Constant, a skiing pioneer who was instrumental in developing this hill in the 1940s and coaching the cadets who blazed these trails.

Peek’n Peak Resort

Known for an annual pile-up of nearly 180 inches of natural snow thanks to Lake Erie's proximity, this Chautauqua region resort has 130 acres of skiable terrain, geared mostly toward beginner and intermediate skiers and riders. Those looking for a bigger challenge will find the glade skiing here excellent. Those looking for something less challenging can hit the 14-lane snow tubing hill or slow things way down at the Serenity Spa , where the menu of treatments includes many designed for couples. The resort's most unique winter offering is its nighttime Lunar Lights Tubing sessions, featuring hot music tracks and thousands of pulsating LED lights.

Plattekill Mountain

belterz/Getty Images

The Snowkidding program at this independently-owned family ski destination in Roxbury, New York, makes learning a fun game for the littlest beginners, ages 4 to 6. They can graduate to three more levels of confidence-boosting instruction. At the same time, older siblings and parents have their pick of 38 trails, including black diamond and double black diamond runs that take advantage of Plattekill's 1,100-foot vertical. The resort's loyal following knows this is the place to find quality skiing in the Catskills with a laidback, small-town vibe.

Titus Mountain

Much closer to Montreal, Canada, than Albany, this small but mighty ski mountain in Malone, New York, has trails that start all the way up near its 2,025-foot summit. Head here when you want to feel away from it all in the northern wilds of the Adirondacks. All-day lift tickets include night skiing under the lights: You won't find a longer ski day in New York State. With its own conveyor lift, the newly renovated tubing hill adds a fun diversion to break up your day.

West Mountain

Located just outside the Adirondack Park in Queensbury, West Mountain is close enough to Lake George to design your own "all forms of water" winter escape. The mountain's 31 ski trails and 10 tubing lanes are fun when the water's in its powdery snow form. Stay at Six Flags Great Escape Lodge & Indoor Waterpark , and you'll get to enjoy the year-round steamy warmth of White Water Bay and its slides and attractions.

When you think of ski destinations in the United States, places like Colorado, Wyoming, and a slew of New England states likely come to mind first. However, there’s one place that shouldn’t be overlooked when planning U.S.-based ski adventures — New York state. There are more than 50 ski resorts sprinkled across the state, each offering its own perks for everyone from brand-new beginners to seasoned pros.

“A fun fact about New York is that it has more ski resorts than any state in the U.S., and there’s a lot of diversity within those resorts,” Dan Sherman, the chief marketing officer of Ski.com , shared with Travel + Leisure . “Lake Placid, known for being the two-time host of the Winter Olympics, is our most popular destination due to its fame, extensive terrain, and the variety of activities it offers. For example, in addition to spending the day at Whiteface Mountain for skiing or riding, visitors can experience what it’s like to be an Olympic bobsledder or skeleton at the Lake Placid Olympic Sports Stadium.”

Hunter Mountain

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

Hunter Mountain , located in the Catskills, is known for its consistent winter experience (thanks to its snow-making program) and for being one of the easiest-to-reach mountains from the city. “One of the most accessible resorts is Hunter Mountain, located just 2.5 hours away by car from New York City,” Colin Smith, a Ski.com mountain travel expert, said. This is the perfect option for anyone in the area interested in enjoying a special weekend away or for locals who are eager to get their legs ready for a bigger trip out west to the Rockies or east to the Alps.

Whiteface Mountain

Whiteface Mountain offers skiers and riders the chance to feel like an Olympian. After all, the mountain was the site of the 1980 Winter Games. Here, visitors can carve their turns down slopes that face Lake Placid and explore the Olympic facilities in their downtime. Guests can even take part in the bobsled experience and see how they’d fare against gold medalists.

Windham Mountain Club

Windham Mountain Club is a charming resort found in the northern Catskills that’s ideal for families thanks to its ski school for kids as young as three years old. The mountain is home to 54 groomed trails, along with six progressive terrain parks to help beginners advance to the next stage of their trick riding. And don’t miss the resort's non-skiing activities, like snowshoe and yoga adventures .

Bristol Mountain , located in the Finger Lakes region, offers skiers and riders the chance to ski down well-maintained trails, each offering more beautiful views than the last. Willard Mountain

Courtesy of Willard Mountain

Willard Mountain , located in the eastern part of the state, is another small-but-mighty ski resort. New improvements to the resort include upgraded snowmaking infrastructure to keep the runs in peak condition and streamlined equipment rentals.

11 Best Ski Resorts near New York City, 2023/24

Written by Barbara Radcliffe Rogers and Stillman Rogers Updated Nov 13, 2023 We may earn a commission from affiliate links ( )

Skiing may not wait just outside the door, but New York City residents can easily be on the slopes for a day trip or a weekend ski getaway. A train/bus combination can whisk skiers from Grand Central Station to Thunder Mountain in as little as an hour and a quarter. Longer runs and more vertical drop await just two hours from the city.

A three-hour radius includes resorts in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York's Catskills. Skiing near New York City is made even easier by arrangements that resorts have made with transportation companies, offering round-trip bus transport, sometimes as part of a package with lift tickets and equipment rentals. The NYC Snow Bus provides transportation from Union Square to several of these mountains.

The order in the rankings below is based on multiple – and sometimes conflicting – factors, so the order is less important than the attributes of each mountain. Some skiers will be happy to sacrifice a few hundred feet of vertical drop in order to get there sooner.

For others, it's the powder that counts, or the variety of the terrain, not the travel time. Other facilities are important considerations, too, such as a tubing hill, learning programs for children, or the availability of night skiing.

When you're looking for a day or weekend getaway to the slopes, you'll find the right place to go skiing with our list of the best ski resorts near New York City.

1. Windham Mountain, Windham, New York

2. hunter mountain, new york, 3. mountain creek, new jersey, 4. thunder ridge, new york, 5. camelback mountain, pennsylvania, 6. plattekill mountain, new york, 7. belleayre mountain, new york, 8. jiminy peak, massachusetts, 9. catamount, new york, 10. mohawk mountain, connecticut, 11. mount snow, vermont, best resorts for families, map of ski resorts near new york city.

Windham Mountain

In the Catskills, a two-hour drive from the city, Windham Mountain's 1,600-foot vertical drop encompasses a terrain so varied that it allows for seven double-black diamond trails for experts, along with a dozen gentle runs for beginners and almost half of the 54 trails for intermediates.

Boarders can ride at six separate terrain parks with more than 80 jumps, rails, pipes, and boxes, plus an inflatable Air Bag for practicing jumps.

Nearly all the 285 skiable acres - the most of any resort on this list - are covered by snowmaking, which has been enhanced in the past two years by major investments in equipment. Lighting extends the ski day on Friday and Saturday nights. Or extend the day right from the start with the First Tracks program that allows you to ski with a guide in the morning before the lifts open to the public. The multi-lane tubing park is open until 8pm on Friday and Saturday, and features a conveyor lift and reserved lanes for solo swirlers or larger groups. A rustic lodge at the tubing hill is a good place to warm up between runs.

The Tubing Park has a fleet of Arctic Cat snowmobiles just for kids between ages 6 and 13 and weighing less than 120 pounds. The resort also offers ice skating and cross-country skiing.

Address: 19 Resort Drive, Windham, New York

Foggy day on Hunter Mountain

With the same 1,600 feet of vertical as Windham and about 2.75 hours from the city, Hunter Mountain includes three mountain faces that offer a tremendous variety of terrain. Its 320 skiable acres are covered by state-of-the-art snowmaking that supplements the Catskills' natural snowfall. The mountain is known for its high-quality maintenance and grooming.

The 67 trails are divided into 25 percent beginner, 30 percent intermediate, 30 percent advanced, and 15 percent for experts. Terrain parks include the signature Park Avenue, located on the main face of Hunter Mountain with plenty of jumps, transitions, rails, and other features. Park Ave West steps up the game with constantly changing features and is the venue for all of Hunter Mountain's freestyle terrain events.

A zipline canopy tour soars 600 feet above the resort, and the newly branded Bubly tubing park is one of the largest in New York. The tubing hill, at nearly 1,000 feet long, is accessed by a carpet lift.

Address: 64 Klein Ave, Hunter, New York

Mountain Creek

With a respectable 1,040-foot vertical drop an hour's drive from New York, Mountain Creek offers the longest runs of any resort that's less than two hours from the city . The 46 trails, accessed by eight lifts, spread across four mountain peaks and are 100 percent covered by snowmaking.

About one-fourth of the trails are for beginners, one third for advanced skiers, and the rest for intermediates. Beginning skiers are not limited to the lower slopes, but have green runs from two of the summits. The 67-acre terrain park has over 80 freestyle features and a 50-foot jump airbag.

All the 167 skiable acres are lighted for night skiing ; the resort has a zipline tour and a 30-lane tubing park.

Mountain Creek's Go Skiing and Go Snowboarding packages include all the essentials for a day on the slopes or for a beginner to polish up their skills. Along with a full-day lift ticket and equipment rentals, the pass gives access to the Terrain Based Learning skills area for self-guided lessons and the help of instructors.

Terrain Based Learning was pioneered at Mountain Creek, creating a revolution in ski instruction, and has since been adopted by some of the country's best ski schools. A unique feature of Mountain Creek is the availability of rental snow pants and jackets for those who want to try out skiing or boarding but don't have suitable winter outerwear.

Address: 123 Route 94, Vernon, New Jersey

Although one of the smallest mountains listed here, with only 100 skiable acres and 500 feet of vertical drop, Thunder Ridge earns its place among the larger resorts as the closest to the city and the easiest to reach by public transportation . Via the Metro-North Ski Train from Grand Central Station and the free shuttle from the Patterson train station, it's about 1.25 hours from the city to the mountain.

The family-friendly resort's 22 trails include six for advanced skiers, with the remainder divided evenly between beginners and intermediates. All are covered by snowmaking, as is the terrain park, and are accessed by three chairlifts and four carpet lifts. A plus for families is the reasonable price of lift tickets. Weekdays offer the best value for adults.

Thunder Ridge is known for its learning program, with the northeast's highest percentage of Professional Ski Instructors of America certified instructors. The entire family can learn together or polish their skills with a Family Private Lesson for a group of four to six people with a private instructor.

Address: 137 Birch Hill Road, Patterson, New York

Camelback Mountain

A family-friendly mountain with an 800-foot vertical, Camelback Mountain designates 18 of its 39 trails for beginners and 11 for intermediates; even the remainder marked for experts don't offer any hair-raising drops. Twenty of its 166 acres are devoted to terrain parks that offer more challenges to riders and freestylers. The 50-square-foot air bag eases the landing for practice jumps.

Introduced for the 2023/2024 season, the new 6-person Black Bear 6 lift whisks skiers and boarders from the base of the mountain to the summit in under 3 minutes, protected from the wind and weather by a bubble canopy.

On Friday and Saturday nights, all trails and parks are open until 10pm, and the super-sized tubing park is open until 9pm. The 40-lane park has a carpet lift.

About two hours from New York, Camelback is in the Poconos, a popular weekend getaway destination for both New York and Philadelphia residents.

Camelback Lodge and Indoor Waterpark is located right at the resort.

Address: 301 Resort Drive, Tannersville, Pennsylvania

Plattekill Mountain

Plattekill may be farther from New York than neighboring resorts of the Catskills, but for those who love powder, it's well worth the extra few minutes. Known as the powder capital of the Catskills , Plattekill is in a small box canyon with its own microclimate . Its 3,500-foot elevation, north-facing slopes, and position as the first high mountain east of Lake Ontario combine to take full advantage of the lake effect as storms roll in from the west.

Natural snowfall averages 175 inches per year , drawing serious skiers to its two peaks, which lie along a ridgeline with a 1,100-foot vertical drop. Another draw is that nearly half the 38 trails are rated for advanced and expert skiers, four of them double-black diamonds to take full advantage of the Catskills' most rugged terrain .

Only 20 percent of the trails are for beginners, but unlike many mountains, Plattekill has green runs from each of its summits, so everyone can enjoy the full mountain experience. Its 2-mile-long gentle cruisers are a real thrill for beginners who are usually limited to lower-mountain slopes and trails.

In addition to its dependable snow and rugged terrain, devoted Plattekill fans love its unique laid-back atmosphere.

Open only Friday through Sunday, and on weekdays following at least 12 inches of snowfall, Plattekill restricts the number of lift tickets each day to keep lines short for its two summit chairlifts.

Address: 469 Plattekill Road, Roxbury, New York

Belleayre Mountain

Also uncrowded and one of the most wallet-friendly ski resorts in the Catskills, Belleayre Mountain has an impressive 1,404 feet of vertical, with 50 trails across 175 acres of mixed terrain. More than half the trails are for intermediates, with the rest split at about one-fifth each for beginners and experts.

Nine of the trails are rated double-black diamond. These trails and five glades are on the top half of the mountain, accessible from a midpoint, so you can spend a day skiing only the upper reaches. The longest run is over two miles long.

Boarders and freestylers will appreciate the terrain and progression parks, which include a rails-only park. More than nine kilometers of ungroomed cross-country trails into the Catskill Forest Preserve are free to use.

Trailways bus line offers round-trip ski packages from Port Authority that include transportation to the slopes and a lift ticket, at less than the cost of a lift ticket alone at most major ski resorts. Low-priced Frequent Skier Cards score skiers half-price lift tickets on weekdays, 25% reduction on weekends and holidays; these are also valid at Gore and Whiteface Mountains.

Address: 181 Galli Curci Road, Highmount, New York

About three hours from the city, Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort is a self-contained ski area in the Berkshires, close to the Massachusetts-New York Border. Almost half the 45 trails are for beginners, combined with the excellent Terrain Based Learning program to make the resort a favorite for families .

The vertical rise of 1,150 feet and nine expert trails - three of which are rated double black diamond - keeps the mountain interesting for more experienced skiers; the longest run is more than two miles. Much of the 167 skiable acres is lighted for night skiing.

The three terrain parks are graded for progression, with one designed for younger children just learning to ride. A mountain coaster rounds out the outdoor activities.

Jiminy Peak gets 100 percent of its electrical power from renewable sources, primarily the giant wind turbine at the summit; it is the only ski area in North America with this distinction. An advantage for families is the ability to stay in the resort village right at the base, with family-sized condos in the Country Inn at Jiminy Peak , along with dining, shops, and other services.

Address: 37 Corey Road, Hancock, Massachusetts

Catamount

Also in the Berkshires, and half in Massachusetts, Catamount straddles the state line, so you can ski in two states on a single run. Its vertical is 1,000 feet, and the terrain is varied enough for 10 expert runs and the Berkshires' longest, a 2.5-mile cruiser from the top.

The rest of the mountain is evenly divided between easy and intermediate trails, a dedicated learners' area, and three terrain parks. The 15 trails and the terrain park, a total of 55 acres, are lighted for night skiing and riding until 10pm on weekends and holidays. Snowmaking covers nearly 100 percent of the trails.

The Catamount Zip Tour has one of the longest ziplines in the country, at more than 5,000 feet. This is one of the few family-owned ski resorts remaining in New England.

Address: 78 Catamount Road, Hillsdale, New York

Mohawk Mountain

Granted, Mohawk Mountain's 650-foot vertical may not provide the longest runs - the longest is Deer Run at 1.25 miles -- but it packs a surprising variety into 112 acres of ski terrain. Half of the 25 trails are for intermediate skiers, with 30 percent for beginners and 20 percent for advanced. Mohawk also has a separate learning area for beginners.

Sixteen trails, about one-third of the mountain, are lighted for night skiing, and all the trails are covered by snowmaking. Mohawk Mountain is located in Mohawk State Forest, at the southern end of the Berkshires, just over two hours from the George Washington Bridge.

Address: 46 Great Hollow Road, Cornwall, Connecticut

Aerial view of Mount Snow, Vermont

If you long for more vertical, and your ideal ski weekend includes moonlight in Vermont , you can have it all, in a four-hour drive from the city. Mount Snow is the closest Vermont ski resort to New York City, lying not far from the Massachusetts border.

The location in the Green Mountains' snow zone promises an average annual snowfall of 156 inches. The addition of more than 250 high-output snow guns (the most of any North American ski resort) keeps trail conditions at their prime.

The mountain's 20 lifts, including the Bluebird Express, the East's first six-passenger bubble lift, access 80 trails networked across 588 acres. Intermediates are a high priority at Mount Snow, with 54 trails; beginners have an area of their own with slower lifts and can even ski from the summit on a long gentle cruiser.

Experts head for the North Face to ski its 10 expert trails and one double-black, served by two triple chairlifts. Boarders love the 10 terrain parks and a halfpipe.

Mount Snow is a Vail Resort, so your EPIC Pass is valid here, but all Vail Resorts are limiting daily tickets this season, so be sure to reserve in advance.

Address: 39 Mount Snow Road, West Dover, Vermont

Young girl skiing

Mount Peter

Free beginner ski and snowboard school and skiing an hour from New York City combine to make Mount Peter a winner for families. In the Hudson Valley, Mount Peter is also known for its all-mountain snowmaking and expert grooming, as well as night skiing on every one of its 10 trails, the terrain park, and beginners' area.

The terrain is well divided for all levels of skier, with two beginner trails (one from the summit), four options for experts, and four for intermediates. Learning skiers have a dedicated area with a carpet lift, and another carpet lift serves the tubing park . Two double chairlifts and a quad access the mountain trails.

Address; 51 Old Mt. Peter Road Warwick, New York

Campgaw Mountain

The closest skiing to New York with 100 percent snowmaking , Campgaw Mountain also stands out as a premier learn-to-ski or snowboard destination. Only 18 miles north of the George Washington Bridge, the mountain has short lift lines and uncrowded trails, served by two double chairlifts and two carpet lifts.

In addition to its eight beginner and intermediate trails and expert learning program, its specialized children's program for ages four through six makes Campgaw Mountain a good choice for family skiing near New York City.

Address: 200 Campgaw Road, Mahwah, New Jersey

Best winter getaways from NYC

Burlington, VT

1.  Burlington, VT

6 hrs by car, 8 hrs by Amtrak

The lakeside city of Burlington is that classic New England destination you might expect. From the shining waters of Lake Champlain to City Hall Park, the city is quite beautiful. Mixed among the walkable streets with quaint homes are cafes and bars you’ll want to linger at, a mix of indy and luxury shops, and a flourishing craft beer scene. When you go, expect to have a laid-back, choose-your-own-adventure getaway with an abundance of opportunities for fun and exploration.

What to do:

Shop at the Church Street Marketplace and dine at our favorite spots August First ,  The Farmhouse Tap & Grill  and Juniper, but don’t miss out on Zero Gravity Craft Brewery  or The Archive for those who like cold adult beverages. In the mood for local music, head to  Radio Bean . Of course, Burlington is close to a handful of sky resorts, so pack warmly! For more details, we put together a 24-hour itinerary for you.

Where to stay:  At the  chic  Hotel Vermont  ($208-$599 per night), you’ll have a cozy, stylish and convenient stay in Burlington. The lobby itself is comfortable—to the left is an arrangement of complimentary snacks and information about Burlington and to the right is a dock for about six bikes you can take out for free. Warm wood accents and clean linens are a balm to travel-weary souls and the platform bed and pillows were cloud-soft. The best part of Hotel Vermont, though, is the locally-made products it stocks its rooms with.

New Paltz, NY

2.  New Paltz, NY

2 hrs by car

If you’ve ever walked through Central Park and felt wistful leaving the snowy North Woods, then it might be worth heading to New Paltz, NY to tackle some serious cold-weather hiking. Luckily for you, a nature-filled winter weekend can be had at the top of the Shawangunk Ridge at Mohonk Mountain House.

This historic resort overlooks the half-mile-long Lake Mohonk and is a National Historic Landmark that has been owned by the same family for 154 years. While staying at this 265-room Victorian castle with a full-service spa isn’t exactly roughing it, photos of long-gone relatives, fireplaces and the lack of TVs in each room add some rustic charm.

What to do: The best reason by far to visit Mohonk is to get outside and explore its extensive hiking trails, which are set in 40,000 acres of forests. One of the most popular hikes is a relatively easy trek up to the Albert K. Smiley Memorial Tower, a stone structure that was built in 1923 in honor of one of the resort’s founders, and which offers fantastic views of the surrounding area. All of the hiking trails are well marked and maps are provided. In the winter months, traction devices are available for guests to make their way through icy terrain as well as snowshoes and cross-country skis. An open-air Pavilion also transforms into an enchanting ice rink during winter with string lights, upbeat music and views of the lake and resort. Snow tubing on a hill located near the resort also provides some cold-weather thrills.

Where to stay: Mohonk Mountain House ( 1000 Mountain Rest Rd; 845-765-3286, mohonk.com ) provides incredibly winter-ready rooms—many of which boast wood-burning fireplaces. (Logs and matches can be requested from the front desk.) The on-site spa also offers a full menu of winter-specific treatment options . Don’t miss the Contrast Hydrotherapy Massage which approximates the feeling of a polar plunge before an hour-long massage or the new Scalp, Hands and Feet Ritual which pays extra attention to those body parts that may be most exposed to the cold. Individuals resistant to cold weather can also take advantage of plenty of indoor activities as well, including kitchen tours, indoor archery and movie screenings.

Stone Harbor, NJ

3.  Stone Harbor, NJ

2.5 hrs by car

Some of the most underrated winter destinations are actually off-season summer hot spots, like this charming town on the southernmost corner of the Jersey Shore. A mashup of tiny shops, cottages and beaches, the three-block-wide community is populated by beach-going families and longtime renters and vacationers during summer. During the winter, trees are bedecked with Christmas lights and those quaint streets are a bit roomier, offering a peaceful setting complete with views of gentle snowfall over the picturesque bay.

What to do: Along with Avalon, Stone Harbor is one of two beach towns located on Seven Mile Island, which was first established in 1887. Nature lovers will enjoy the coastline’s beautiful, protected sand dunes. (You can look, but don’t touch!) In the summer, good winds and short walks to the waterfront make this beach a favorite for surfers and boogie boarders, but during the winter, don’t miss Stone Harbor Point at the southern tip of the beach, which offers beautiful views of the cape and a lighthouse at Hereford Inlet.

Where to stay: The aptly coastal chic Reeds at Shelter Haven is one of the town’s main destinations, with fine dining at Sax Restaurant & Lounge, live music events at the bar, and 37 beautifully-appointed guest rooms and suites that each offer the feel of a New England coastal escape in the middle of south Jersey. In the early winter, the waterfront dining area stays open for guests to cozy up with blankets on lounge chairs and catch views of the untouched beach which seems to go on for miles. One of the best parts? Rooms are equipped with working fireplaces—ideal for keeping warm while enjoying floor-to-ceiling views of the bay.

Montreal

4.  Montreal

6 hrs by car

Folks forget that Montreal (yes, in Canada) is as quick a drive from the city as upstate attractions including Niagara Falls. And for just a six-hour drive, you can immerse yourself in another country, cuisine and culture.

What to do: Montreal is a culinary capital to rival New York City (just ask them about bagels), and during the winter, comfort foods like poutine at the classic Québécois joint Pierette Patates or anything at the beloved Joe Beef makes for hearty feasts. Waterfront scenes are another forte in the city—from the old-Montreal port to the revitalizing winter hot spa Bota Bota. And for the adventurous vacationer, try ice skating or skiing on the Mont-Royal. Last but not least, check out the glowing Montreal en Lumière Festival, a festival of lights, music, food, and art.

Where to stay: Symbolizing the marriage of French and English, Fairmont the Queen Elizabeth is one of our favorite stays in downtown Montreal. Known as the site of the John Lennon-Yoko Ono bed-in of 1969, the hotel offers a central location, impeccable hospitality and contemporary, refurbished digs following a multi-million renovation.

Gardiner, NY

5.  Gardiner, NY

1.5 hrs by car

First settled by French Huguenots, this hamlet is surrounded by loads of natural attractions and villages that offer a small-town getaway from the city. For a town of just over 5,000, it boasts a large amount of sites on the National Register of Historic Places, including a mountain historic district and an 18th-century mill known as the oldest in the state.

What to do: The area intersects with the rock climber – beloved Minnewaska State Park Preserve, whose stunning rock formations include a five-hour hike up to the cliffs called Gertrude’s Nose. During the winter, the main attraction is the Tuthilltown Spirits Distillery , the first whiskey distillery in the state since Prohibition. Producing several styles of spirit, namely bourbon, rye and rum, the distillery offers tours, tastings at their tasting room and even a menu of grub to complement it at the Tuthill House at the Mill restaurant.

Where to stay: Fancy a stay at a 148-year-old Victorian castle resort in the heart of the Hudson Valley? The Monhonk Mountain House is surrounded by miles of untouched nature and is known for an acclaimed spa replete with an outdoor heated mineral pool and a rejuvenating solarium. Though a bit pricier, a stay here is an elegant way to unwind while taking in breathtaking natural beauty.

Woodstock, VT

6.  Woodstock, VT

5 hrs by car

It takes five hours to reach this almost magical Vermont shire town founded in the 18th century, but it’s certainly worth visiting during the wintertime Wassail Weekend—an annual December celebration where residents don their finest holiday wear to parade into town on horseback and participate in a variety of other activities including a tree lighting. Throughout the cold months, the Main Street shops, historic homes, and country inns are blanketed in pure white snow, making it one of the most beautiful small towns in America.

What to do: The town is also home to some of the oldest—and finest—general stores in the country, including FH Gillingham & Sons , which specializes in local goods like jellies and jams as well as handicrafts. Beyond the town’s borders, there are also ample outdoor attractions ranging from the dairy-producing Billings Farm & Museum , the conversation-friendly Rockefeller National Historical Park and, for the adventurous, the Suicide Six skiing and snowboarding area.

Where to stay: Find room and board at the Lincoln Inn & Restaurant , helmed by Michelin-trained chef Jevgenija Saromova and her partner, owner Mara Mehlman. Located on six acres of landscape, the secluded inn follows the tradition of Europe’s lauded restaurant-inns—destination-worthy eateries that offer accommodations for an immersive sense of place. Here, visitors have access to six rustic guest rooms, each with a different design.

Lake Placid, NY

7.  Lake Placid, NY

A drive up the New York State Thruway takes you into the heart of the Adirondacks-set winter wonderland Lake Placid. Outdoor enthusiasts have their pick of activities: cross-country skiing, ice-skating, touring historic sites of the 1980 Olympic games. Test your skills during the Lake Placid Loppet, an annual 25K or 50K cross-country skiing race held at the Olympic Sports Complex (Feb 24 to 26). Or strap on skates and hit the frozen Mirror Lake, or gear up for a luge or bobsled ride.

What to do: Snag a bird’s-eye view of the highest vertical drop east of the Rocky Mountains when you take a ride on the Cloudsplitter Gondola. The eight-person chariot transports you from the Main Base Lodge of Whiteface Mountain to the top of Little Whiteface in about 15 minutes. Between Instagram snaps along the way, bask in the mountain views, ski trails, forests and Lake Placid itself.

Where to stay:   You can't do much better than the Mirror Lake Inn , a four-diamond, seven-acre resort boasting a full spa, gym and salon, private beach, indoor and outdoor pools, tennis and golf and excellent access to hiking and skiing trails.  Whiteface Lodge puts you right in the action, since it’s just a few minutes from the ski slopes of Whiteface Mountain and mere blocks from Lake Placid. That said, given the spot’s one-bedroom suites, on-site restaurants and spa, you might not even want to leave. If you’re looking for something more boutique and unique, try out Eastwind Lake Placid.

Boston

8.  Boston

5 hrs by bus or 3.5 hrs by Amtrak

Sometimes escaping the city means heading to another city. The City of Kind Hearts, the Cradle of Liberty or Beantown—whatever you call it, Boston is an ideal extended weekend trip for history buffs and food lovers alike. Sitting some 200 miles north of NYC, this city will soon be home to a 16-restaurant Time Out Market.

What to do: There’s something for everyone in Boston: Sports fans can catch a Red Sox game at Fenway Park while art geeks head to the Institute of Contemporary Art or Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, a reconstruction of a 15th-century Venetian palace founded by the eponymous socialite. One of our favorite things to do: Take a walk through Boston’s Freedom Trail starting with the statue of George Washington at Boston Common, passing the Massachusetts State House and ending at the USS Constitution, the world’s oldest commissioned warship.

Where to stay: One of the city’s newest hotels, the 136-room, boutique-style Envoy has already racked up the accolades. Its Seaport location—offering views of the Boston Harbor—is complemented by nautically-themed rooms. There’s an in-house restaurant serving serious seafood along with live music, and a rooftop bar overlooking the water. Bar bites from the Outlook Kitchen downstairs include pulled pork tacos, salumi flatbread and two different grade A burgers.

Philadelphia

9.  Philadelphia

1.5 hrs by Amtrak or car, 2.5 hrs by NJ Transit and SEPTA

Philadelphia is an excellent year-round escape from NYC. Just 95 miles southwest of Manhattan, the City of Brotherly Love gives NYC a run for its money in the Christmas cheer department. During winter, check out destinations like the Electrical Spectacle at Franklin Square, the Holiday Light Show at Shady Brook Farm or the Deck the Hall Light Show at Dilworth Park’s Wintergarden to get in the mood.

What to do: Beyond lights, a trip to Philadelphia is hardly complete without a cheesesteak: Try the tourists-loved Pat’s or Geno’s, or try more local favorites like John’s Roast Pork or Campo’s Deli. The latter is located near famous sites like the Liberty Bell, a hot spot for culture vultures. Other dining options include the Reading Terminal Market at City Hall, famed for being America’s oldest farmers’ market, or a critically-acclaimed brunch mainstay, High Street on Hudson.

Where to stay: Consider a smaller boutique hotel when staying in Philly: The Old City’s Lokal Hotel is housed in an erstwhile Civil War cap-making shop with just six modern-industrial units. Skytop, PA

2 hrs by car or Martz Trailways Bus

Don’t scoff at the Pocono Mountains. The area’s become an underrated getaway for New Yorkers, who typically flock to the snowcapped Catskills or Adirondacks come wintertime. This modest mountain range is home to a bevy of nature activities and lodges that’ll make your Instagram followers drool with jealousy.

What to do: Explore a snowy forest during a winter hike or on the back of a dog-drawn sled. Through Skytop Lodge , you can sign up for hikes or a session with Arctic Paws Dog Sled Tours, during which you’ll settle in behind a team of energetic huskies. (Please leave the “mush” yelling to your tour guide.) If you want to go full-on winter outdoors person, cast away from Skytop’s private Poconos stream, which is stocked with trout, for some ice-fishing.

Where to stay: Why not just settle into Skytop Lodge ’s historic digs, which sit on more than 5,000 acres of nature preserve? The stately stone Main Lodge has 124 guest rooms and suites, all of which are decidedly regal, with dark wooden headboards and end tables, pops of royal blue in the bedspreads and decorative accent walls. After a day of hiking, tuck into the Windsor Room for hearty, stick-to-your-ribs winter fare, like French beef stew or the red-wine–braised chicken, and white-bean and duck casserole.

12 best family ski resorts in the US

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Editor’s note: This is a recurring post, regularly updated with new information and offers.

Whether your child is a snowboarding teen used to shredding powder or a newbie headed to ski school for the very first time, many mountain resorts across the U.S. are perfect for a family ski trip .

Skiing can be a terrific family activity in winter , as the après-ski scene provides just as much fun as time spent on the slopes. Many resorts offer alternative snow-related activities — such as tubing, ice skating, snowshoeing and even sleigh rides — so the whole family can enjoy the mountain experience.

Recommended: The best travel credit cards

The best ski resorts for families are usually the ones that offer on- and near-mountain lodging, ski schools with a variety of programs, beginner- and intermediate-friendly terrain and some quality non-ski activities, too.

Keep in mind that ski and snowboard lessons can book up well in advance, so if ski school — or even on-mountain child care — is a must-have for your vacation, double-check the options to ensure they fit your ski vacation goals.

Once you decide on the best resort for your family, price out lift tickets and pass options ahead of time. You may be surprised at how much more affordable it is to buy ski passes in advance rather than purchase individual lift tickets — even if you are only skiing for a day or two.

Some mountains also offer kids-ski-free programs , which can help keep the trip cost down. Additionally, many ski resorts have capacity limits, so you’ll want to make sure you purchase your tickets prior to arriving (or make advance reservations at select mountains).

With all these nuances in mind, here are some of our favorite ski resorts for the whole family.

Beaver Creek Resort, Colorado

Why beaver creek is a good ski resort for families.

This may be surprising for those who are only familiar with the mountain’s luxury reputation, but Colorado’s Beaver Creek is perhaps one of the friendliest slopes for family ski trips. About a two-hour drive from Denver International Airport (DEN) or 30 minutes from Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), this resort is relatively easy to access, assuming you have good road conditions.

Beaver Creek has been upping its already solid family ski game even more lately thanks, in part, to the recent opening of a brand-new, 250-acre, lift-served expansion called McCoy Park. This offers even more terrain for beginner and intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and it elevates the mountain experience with 17 new groomable trails, plus two additional chairlifts.

Here, you’ll also find the Beaver Creek Candy Cabin , which is a great addition to the Ice Cream Parlour at the top of the Haymeadow Express Gondola. At the Red Buffalo Park’s Cookie Cabin and at the bottom of the Centennial Express and Haymeadow Lift, you’ll also be able to experience the mountain’s infamous 3 p.m. cookie time.

After a long day of skiing, you can enjoy ice skating in the village, and on Thursday nights, kids and adults who are at least level four skiers can participate in a glow stick ski. For a unique experience, take an open-air, snowcat-led sleigh ride to Allie’s Cabin , Zach’s Cabin or Beano’s Cabin — three different mountain-top dining options.

The mountain also ensures that teens are fully entertained. With the Hawk’s Nest Cabin debuting this year in Beaver Creek Village, teens can enjoy the coolest underage club, featuring craft nonalcoholic beverages, music, interactive technology, arcade and table games, a ski simulator, lounge spots and more.

Lift tickets for Beaver Creek don’t have to cost a ton if you plan in advance and lock in an Epic Pass of some sort.

Keystone Resort, Colorado

Why keystone is a good ski resort for families.

Out of all the great Colorado ski resorts (and there are plenty), Keystone is the hot spot for kids of all ages. There are the usual dog sledding, snow tubing, ice skating and sleigh ride activities, but the piece de resistance is the resort’s kids programs and accommodations.

There are plenty of fun on-mountain experiences, such as snowcat skiing and night skiing (on weekends and holidays). Tykes should also like the famous Snow Fort. In fact, this year, there are actually two snow forts to pick from: one up on Dercum Mountain and one in the Mountain House base area.

Additionally, the resort offers a ton of family conveniences, such as free preferred family parking for those with kids 12 and younger as well as red wagons to help tow skis, boards or even tired kiddos.

With a new lift and for the 2023-24 season, Keystone will add another 550 acres of diverse terrain among 16 new trails. Now, with more than 3,500 acres, your family can experience a wide range of terrain, including the 3.5-mile-long Schoolmarm — a timeless run for the family to work on turns.

Snowmass, Colorado

Why snowmass is a good ski resort for families.

Snowmass is one of the mountains in Colorado’s swanky Aspen ski area, so you can check a high-end ski resort off your bucket list while entertaining the kids at the same time.

A bit less showy than its big sister Aspen, Snowmass notably includes the Treehouse Kids’ Adventure Center, a licensed kids club for children between 8 weeks and 4 years old. Children at least 2.5 years old can also hit the slopes, as the mountain offers many ski school options.

On top of that, Snowmass allows kids to ski free all the way through age 6, which makes it a more affordable choice for a young family than most mountains; other areas typically start charging kids by the time they turn 4. For those 7 and up, know that the mountain participates in both the Ikon and Mountain Collective ski passes.

Other kid-friendly Snowmass activities include on-mountain snow tubing , alpine coasters , ice skating , snowshoeing tours and even an indoor climbing wall . During select dates throughout winter, Snowmass will offer a nighttime winter wonderland party called Ullr Nights filled with evening activities for families. This includes a gondola ride to Elk Camp, bonfires, tubing, alpine coaster rides, snow biking, s’mores and hot chocolate.

Copper Mountain, Colorado

Why copper mountain is a good ski resort for families.

If you are looking for a Colorado ski resort experience with lower prices than its neighbors, Copper is a great choice. This resort has family-friendly written all over it, with an array of activities for all ages.

In addition to skiing in what are often prime snow conditions, you’ll have the Rocky Mountain Coaster , plenty of snow tubing , ice skating on West Lake in Center Village and even daily complimentary ambassador ski tours .

Additionally, whenever there is a full moon, Copper Mountain will offer ambassador-guided Full Moon Snowshoe Tours in the evenings. For an off-mountain activity, the 19,400-square-foot Woodward Copper Barn serves as an indoor action sports facility, offering many unique activities at Copper Mountain.

For the third year in a row, the Copper Maze is set to return. Near the base of the Super Bee lift in Copper’s East Village, this maze is extremely fun for kids, as it’s made entirely of snow.

New this year, visitors will be able to experience the resort’s brand-new mid-mountain lodge, Aerie. The gondola will unload at the deck on this 25,000-square-foot building, which will also offer more dining options with a beautiful 270-degree view.

Copper is also continuing to make improvements to its Western Territory Expansion. This area is on the far west side of the mountain and is designed to inspire beginner skiers, kids and families to connect with Copper’s history and heritage. With 27 new snowmaking hydrants just this year, guests will receive even earlier access. In addition to the new trails that have debuted over the past few years (including kid-friendly tree trails), guests will be able to experience two more beginner trails, bringing Copper’s overall skiable acreage to 2,538 acres.

Deer Valley Resort, Utah

Why deer valley is a good ski resort for families.

When kids are getting their bearings and making big side-to-side turns on a slope, it can be easier to start on runs where you won’t find any snowboarders.

At the ski-only Deer Valley Resort, there’s a children’s adventure area on the mountain where you will find 14 pint-size trails allowing tots to practice new techniques — although their favorite part will probably be the tiny cabin hidden in the woods. The mountain limits its ticket sales each day, which keeps crowds (and lift line waits) at a minimum.

If you are looking for a ski resort that can also entertain a non-skiing child, the Deer Valley Children’s Center offers licensed full-day child care with many activities, as well as outdoor and indoor playgrounds. Children between 2 months and 12 years old can enjoy this facility.

Deer Valley has a fun approach to ski school that includes the Teen Escape for teens ages 13 to 17, the Adventure Club for kids ages 7 to 12, the Reindeer Club for 5- and 6-year-olds and the Bambi Club for 4-year-olds. For the younger kids, you’ll find the class sizes are incredibly small, with just two to four kids in a class — depending on age.

Because Deer Valley participates in the Ikon Pass ski program, you may find that the more economical way to lock in lift tickets is to opt for a pass instead of paying the window rates.

Northstar California Resort, California

Why northstar is a good ski resort for families.

California’s Northstar Resort, along the California-Nevada border on Lake Tahoe, is excellent for families. They can ski together in the Kids Adventure Zone, where two mountain areas have blue trails safely tucked away from bigger, faster skiers and snowboarders.

This winter, guests to the mountain (which gets an average of 350 inches of annual snowfall) will continue to enjoy Tost — one of the area’s one-of-a-kind traditions. Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can kick up your feet here and unwind midday while enjoying a glass of apple cider (or a glass of bubbly for the adults). Additionally, families can enjoy the après-ski scene by cozying up around the fire pit or zipping around on ice skates while listening to live music. At other times, you can enjoy fireside s’mores and hot cocoa.

If cross-country skiing is your activity of choice, the Nordic Center offers nearly 22 miles of scenic trails for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and fat biking.

Smugglers’ Notch Resort, Vermont

Why smugglers’ notch is a good ski resort for families.

An uber kid-friendly ski resort, Smugglers’ Notch focuses on the entire family experience, which is why it’s known as “America’s Family Resort.”

Smuggs, as it’s called by those who know and love it, offers an award-winning Snow Sport University. It starts lessons with little ones as young as 3 years old. Sir Henry’s Learning and Fun Park has two “magic carpet rides” that gently guide new skiers to the top.

For those who already know how to ski and board, the mountain has everything they could want: 78 trails, eight lifts, the highest vertical drop in northern Vermont at 2,610 feet and more than 300 inches of natural snow each year. Not to mention, multiple terrain parks and 1,000 acres for skiing and riding are available.

For those staying at the resort, everything is a few steps away, and an on-demand shuttle will take you wherever you need to go.

Off the mountain, you’ll also find a plethora of activities — both during the day and night. Activities include snowshoeing, tubing, cross-country skiing, swimming, ice skating, bingo and magic shows. You can also experience the updated Fun Zone 2.0, which features a Ninja Warrior course, laser tag, miniature golf, an arcade, large inflatable slides and more spread across 26,000 square feet of indoor space.

Stowe, Vermont

Why stowe is a good ski resort for families.

Stowe has a world-class ski school and plenty of long, beautiful blue trails to keep your not-yet-expert skiers and snowboarders engaged. The relatively new Adventure Zone has continued to be a big hit; these low-angle, gladed areas are appropriate for anyone in the family looking for a fun experience skiing or boarding through the trees on Mount Mansfield.

After a great family day on the slopes, take in a free pre-dinner skate at the Spruce Peak outdoor ice rink , embark on a guided twilight snowshoe tour through the woods or enjoy indoor rock climbing at Stowe Rocks. If you’re looking for a resort with a village atmosphere, this is one of the best you’ll find in the Northeast.

The total solar eclipse should be 100% visible from Stowe Mountain Resort, and the resort will be throwing a Solar Eclipse Soiree. So, not only should you be able to enjoy some spring skiing on April 8, 2024, but you can also enjoy some eclipse-specific events from Vermont’s highest peak.

The main issue with Stowe Mountain is its ticket prices compared to many other East Coast resorts. Luckily, the Epic Ski Pass can potentially save your family over the walk-up lift ticket rates. You could even look at Epic’s Northeast Value Pass if you expect to only ski at East Coast mountains this winter. Those with an Epic Pass will also be able to access date-specific appreciation days, featuring an on-mountain Champagne and sparking cider toast.

Jay Peak, Vermont

Why jay peak is a good ski resort for families.

People love Jay Peak thanks to its indoor water park , which is ideal for families who want to take a day off from skiing or have something to do after morning ski school. The Jay Peak Pump House features slides, a FlowRider surf simulator and an entire kids play area. Many lodging packages include water park access, or you can purchase a daypass (purchasing in advance is recommended).

Aside from the water park, there are two arcades , a climbing gym , an ice skating rink , an indoor ropes course and a slopeside movie theater . Not all activities are offered every day, so double-check ahead of time. Make advance bookings where available.

Best of all, there’s a surplus of ski-in, ski-out condo and hotel options, giving families the perfect opportunity to stay in accommodations that work best for their needs. For those with little ones — or even big ones — Jay Peak offers child care for children as young as 6 weeks old both during the day and in the evenings.

Bretton Woods, New Hampshire

Why bretton woods is a good ski resort for families.

Just across the Vermont border is New Hampshire’s answer to family-oriented skiing: Bretton Woods.

Home to the family-friendly Omni Mount Washington Resort , Bretton Woods features fat-tire snow biking trails, a 62-mile trail network for cross-country skiing, sleigh rides, snow tubing, canopy tours and an indoor-outdoor heated swimming pool (just for guests). The 3-year-old Rosewood Lodge at the top of the mountain also gives skiers and riders that top-of-the-mountain lodge and luxury dining experience, which you won’t find at many other nearby mountains.

Unfortunately, unlike what you’ll find at many other mountains, Bretton Woods doesn’t offer full-day ski school (only half-day). Here, you’ll only find two-hour group lessons limited to Fridays and Saturdays. However, if you’re looking for private or semi-private lessons, those options are more readily available. They’re also more affordable than what you’ll find ay many other mountains. If ski school is a must, then you’ll want to take their offerings into consideration.

From the hotel’s architecture to the incredible views of the top of Mount Washington, it’s no surprise that the resort is a top destination for families. With many fun activities for the entire family and more than 468 acres to ski , there should be no shortage of on-mountain family fun.
