Vicky Gill is the Wardrobe Lead for Strictly Come Dancing, amongst many other things! We first met when I appeared on the show in 2013. She is passionate about merging fashion and performance. I can vouch for the fact that she is supremely talented at making costumes that people can dance in - and her sparkly leotards are still part of my onstage essentials today. But as a mum of three she was also great at sharing glimpses of normal family life with me, which you very much appreciate when you are on the Strictly juggernaut!

When we spoke, Vicky had just finished Dancing on Ice and was about to start work on the Girls Aloud tour.  She is a very busy woman.

Vicky and her husband are from Newcastle originally but live in London, and as their family support network is far away, she describes their situation as ‘us against the world’.  She is hoping her children - now in their teens and beyond - don’t choose the creative careers which she and her husband have (between you and me, I don’t think that’s working so far!) but she says she just wants them to feel happy in their skin.

Vicky prides herself on being a problem-solver - both in her working life and in her parenting.  And sometimes the worlds have collided - as when she was working with Girls Aloud just after her daughter was born, when she found that nappy cream comes in handy for getting boob tape off!

Michelle Ogundehin is best known as the head judge of Interior Designs Masterclass on BBC 1. It’s a programme I am utterly addicted to, and I was therefore delighted to have been asked to join as a guest judge for semi finals week, this week (TX 23/4/24). I have been a fan of Michelle’s expert eye when it comes to interiors for a long time, having devoured every issue of Elle Decoration published during her time as editor in chief from 2004-2017. I love her approach to homes and how they make you feel, always taking into account the link between our environment and how it affects our mental health.

Off-screen, Michelle is a devoted single mum to her 10 year old son. She became a mum later in life, after years of trying, and her journey included IVF and four miscarriages. She says her son is the best thing that has ever happened to her.

We talked about her worries about becoming a mum due to her own mother not being maternal or loving to her.

She told me how she has recently been ‘album-ing’ her life and also that she believes that what surrounds us at home affects us.

I finally tested her boundaries when I mischievously suggested she should let her little boy draw on his bedroom walls, just as my mum let me!

Heather James is best known to us all as the mum of Deborah James, the beautiful bowelbabe, who I interviewed for Spinning Plates 3 years ago. That was the year before her premature death at the age of 40, from bowel cancer.

Heather explained how she is grieving but working. Not only working in her day job as a gymnastics teacher, but also doing everything that Deborah would have continued with - including campaigning to highlight April as Bowel Cancer Awareness month.

Deborah spent the last weeks of her life at her mum and dad’s house in the summer of 2022 surrounded by her family. Heather and her husband Alistair found themselves looking after Deborah and, to everyone’s surprise, hosting Prince William when he came to their garden to make Deborah a Dame. Heather talked about caring for Deborah when she came home to die, but said Deborah’s zest for life - and campaigning - meant that far from going quiet, it was a busy time of fun, outings, a book, a rose and of course, a Damehood.

It struck me that Heather is everything you would hope to be, as a mum in such a dreadful circumstance.

She is planning to life life to the full, as Deborah wanted her to. And we spoke, just before her son’s wedding where the entire family were planning to party and celebrate just as Deborah would have done if she were still here. And speaking as someone who witnessed her 40th birthday party in full swing, boy, did Deborah know how to party!

New podcast series klaxon!! Spinning Plates is back, and we kick off the the new series with a friend of mine :-) Natasha Bedingfield is a New Zealand-UK singer and songwriter who started out in the business at a similar time to me.  Another shared link is that we are both currently on a new adventure with songs we brought out originally in our early 20s! How’s that for a coincidence?  We’ve each been on an unexpected and exciting journey with our old songs… both because of recent films.  The film ‘Anyone but You’ featured Natasha’s 'Unwritten’ which originally charted nearly 20 years ago.

Natasha talked about her place in her own family’s politics, where her brother Daniel was the first to get into the music industry. Natasha had to fight to pursue her music career; in her family’s eyes, that 'place’ had already been taken by her sibling! (Sidenote: Daniel’s debut single 'Gotta Get Thru This’ kept Murder off the top spot in the charts 22 years ago - not that I’m holding a grudge or anything, Daniel!)

Natasha has a little boy who is now 6.  When he was 2, he was taken seriously ill with a spontaneous brain abscess He had to have two surgeries and was in hospital for 5 weeks.  Thankfully there was a cure and he is fully recovered, but the time he was in hospital was obviously an extremely difficult period for Natasha and her husband. Natasha remembers having to perform a gig while her son was still in hospital. She shared how terribly difficult that was, and how in a room full of small talk she would suddenly blurt out 'My son’s in hospital!’.

On a lighter note Natasha and I talked about how having a baby changed our singing range - for the better!  And we agreed that we are both really enjoying the new ride with our old songs from the early 2000s. It was such a pleasure to hang out with Natasha - she’s such a positive person - and here’s to another series of Spinning Plates!

Trending on Billboard

The scene, in which the film’s lead Barry Keoghan dances nude to the song, kicked off a dance trend on TikTok – and saw the song power into charts around the world.

Last month, “Murder” cracked the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time , at No. 98, then lifted to No. 51, its new peak.

In her homeland, “Murder” recently returned to its all-time peak position of No. 2 on the Official U.K. Singles Chart, and is one of her six top 10 hits there. She also boasts a No. 1 hit as the uncredited singer on Spiller’s 2000’s release “Groovejet (If This Ain’t Love)”. The track has also reentered the top 10 on Australia’s ARIA Chart.

“It actually feels really magical, and if I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve completely processed it really,” Ellis-Bextor told the BBC following the revival for “Murder”. “It’s a song I’ve been singing for over 20 years. I still love singing it. I love the way people react when I do it live. But for new people to be discovering it, for it to be making new memories with people, is kind of beautiful.”

Ahead of her North America jaunt, Ellis-Bextor has strutted her stuff on national TV, performing the song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and for the BBC’s coverage of the BAFTAs.

Sophie Ellis-Bextor Announces First-Ever U.S. Tour Following ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ Resurgence

The British pop star, whose 2001 hit "Murder on the Dancefloor" has gone viral after appearing in the film 'Saltburn,' will play a handful of dates across North America this spring

There’s no need to “kill the groove” because Sophie Ellis-Bextor is hitting the road.

On Tuesday, the pop star, 44, announced that she’ll be setting out on a North American tour in 2024. The string of tour dates comes amid the resurgence of her 2001 hit “Murder on the Dancefloor,” which was prompted by the film Saltburn .

Ellis-Bextor revealed she was going on the road across the U.S. and Canada on Instagram , shortly after her New York City concert, which was supposed to be a one-off show, sold out in just one day.

Laura Lewis/Instagram

The British artist shared a tour poster — featuring a shot of her in a disco-inspired teal ensemble and her hair in a bouffant — and revealed in the caption how thrilled she is to go on tour. “Oh my… the New York show sold out in a day! Thank you thank you thank you,” she wrote.

The caption continued, “So - how about some more shows in some more cities?! San Francisco, San Diego, Washington, Boston, Philadelphia and Toronto - my band and I are coming for you! Super excited. Come and dance with me…. 🪩🥰 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 xxxx.”

Following a European tour that’s ongoing from now until late March, Ellis-Bextor will play seven shows across North America in the spring, hitting a handful of major cities. She’ll first perform two shows in California in late May before heading to the East Coast and eventually wrapping up with one Canadian date in Toronto on June 8.

Just last week the Ellis-Bextor revealed she would be taking to the stage in NYC for the first time, which promptly sold out earlier this week. “CAN’T WAIT,” she wrote on Instagram when announcing the show. “It’s been a long time coming so let’s make it extra special xx.”

Since the release of Emerald Fennell ’s thriller Saltburn in November 2023, Ellis-Bextor’s “Murder on the Dancefloor,” off her 2001 debut solo album Read My Lips, has resurfaced, gone viral on TikTok and become somewhat of a pop culture phenomenon. (In the film, the tune plays for an extended period while star Barry Keoghan dances through the titular mansion in the nude.)

“Murder on the Dancefloor” received its most-ever streams in a single day on Spotify on New Year’s Eve going into 2024, and it’s since appeared on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time ever, as well as the U.K. Singles Chart where it’s currently sitting pretty at the No. 2 spot.

The hitmaker has also given fans a taste of her live show by recently performing the infectious dance-pop song on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and during the 2024 BAFTAs .

Upon the release of Saltburn , Ellis-Bextor told PEOPLE that she was somewhat surprised by how her song was used in the film, but pleased with the results. "Seeing it written down as a premise is different," she said. "I mean, Barry really went for it. And it's, like, the  whole  song!"

"I didn't really know exactly how it would play in terms of the role it was in the movie until I saw it at the screening, but I absolutely loved it," she added. "I think it's such a clever, funny, smart film. I really enjoyed it."

While Ellis-Bextor’s NYC concert sold out, tickets to the other dates are available and on sale now .

Sophie Ellis-Bextor working on 'happy disco music' after Murder On The Dance Floor Saltburn resurgence

Sophie Ellis-Bextor says her song Murder On The Dancefloor being given a new lease of life after being included in the movie Saltburn has reaffirmed her love for making music.

The track, which was originally released in 2001, went viral towards the end of last year after featuring in the unforgettable final scene of the film which sees actor Barry Keoghan dance naked. It inspired a TikTok trend and saw the song re-enter the UK Top 10 for the first time since January 2002.

While she still can’t fully process what has happened, the London-born singer is fully enjoying the ride, describing it as “pretty magical”.

Speaking to the Standard, Ellis-Bextor said: “Murder On The Dancefloor is like a really good old friend of mine and we’ve always been on very good terms and I’ve always happily sung it. Having this other adventure I think my main thing throughout has been to really enjoy it because if you’re not enjoying, it’s kind of wasted on you really.

“It’s not just what has happened with Murder, I think that’s kind of my perspective with all of it really. It’s about getting the most out of all of it and really enjoying each thing for what it is with no expectation attached, just solely for the experience of doing it.”

She’s feeling creatively charged and is currently back in the recording studio working on her eighth studio album and follow-up to 2023’s Hana.

She said: “I’ve been songwriting. I turned 45 recently and I spent the day in Abbey Road with Nile Rodgers so I’m a very happy girl and making lots of nice happy disco music and I’m feeling very light in my step. It’s such a pleasure to make new music and I’m with some incredible people so that is my focus at the moment.”

As for when fans will get to hear it, she’s playing coy.

“I don’t know, whenever it’s ready. It has got to be the right music, you can’t rush these things but that being said, there’s a lot of really positive momentum. I’m in the right mood for songwriting basically so I feel like it won’t be too long.”

This weekend will see Ellis-Baxtor take the pitch at Twickenham to perform the half-time show for the Guinness Women’s Six Nations rugby match between England and Ireland.

While she says recognition for women in sport is “long overdue”, she fully intends to leave it to the professionals on the day.

“I don’t think I really started a proper relationship with sports until I was in my early 20s. Sports at school I didn’t really feel like it was my thing and sort of disengaged. I think that things are so radically different now, especially for like young girls,” she reflected.

“No-one ever asked me to play football or rugby as a kid but now there are so many girls that adore it from as young as primary school. It’s about keeping girls engaged throughout their teenage years, that’s when it becomes something where it can sort of shift or it can disengage a bit but I mean if you’ve got sport, that’s so good for everything not least your mental health.

“I think women have probably always been pretty incredible, but the way that they are being perceived, spoken about and given respect, that’s different. I think women and sport is probably an age-old story, but having the spotlight and the moment with people talking about it andappreciating it is long overdue and even then, the conversation around it continues.”

Apart from announce their tour dates for Europe and the UK, the stars of NME ‘s The Cover have also released two new bonus tracks from their debut album, ‘Pratts & Pain’ : ‘Merry Mary Marry Me’ and ‘Claw Foot’, both of which you can listen to below.

Written alongside their debut album, ‘Pratts & Pain’, ‘Merry Mary Marry Me’ is a grunge-tinged tune that chronicles the feeling of being left behind as everyone around you settles into marriage and relationships. While not as sonically adventurous as their other released, the track is still undeniably Royel Otis.

‘Claw Foot’ features a more frenetic and lively chorus that’s more aligned with the rest of their album that begs to be played in the summertime.

Per a press released, Royel Otis’ viral cover of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s ‘Murder On The Dancefloor’ for triple J’s ‘Like A Version’ franchise has also been certified gold.

‘Pratts & Pain’ scored a four-star review upon its release earlier this year, with NME ‘s Andy Brown writing: “Though ‘Pratts & Pain’ will launch in the middle of a dreary February, Royel Otis may have to wait a few months for their achievement to be properly recognised. This is an album destined for festival season greatness – for cool-breeze drives, warm summer parties, and late-night singalongs.”

Dua Lipa: ‘If It’s Not Fun, I Don’t Want It’

For the queen of the dance floor and everyone’s big sister, life is only worth living if you’re having a good time.

dua lipa

The first time Dua Lipa went clubbing, she was just a wisp of a tween girl in Kosovo. The UK-born pop star realizes how absurd it sounds as she explains it. Seated in her home office in London, flanked by shelves teeming with books, she thumbs through her phone for a blurry image of a photo from that fateful night—as if to prove to the two of us that it did indeed happen. At the center of the photo is a young Lipa dressed in white crochet, smiling brightly next to her much taller cousin and an entourage of stylish women.

Clubbing is a Lipa family tradition; it’s also why she wasn’t fazed when, while out one night on New York City’s Lower East Side with Charli XCX, she ran into her parents partying at The Box. “We celebrate everything and anything, and we just love a party,” she explains. “When I go to my aunt’s house, it all starts off pretty tame....Then the music comes on, and we’re all dancing in the house. And that’s a Tuesday!”

Now 28, Lipa has since made a name for herself as Britain’s leading lady of disco. On the dance floor, she plays an almighty oracle, a savvy young agony aunt for lovelorn club kids, desperate for the sobering real talk she’s dispensed in hits like “New Rules” and “Don’t Start Now.”

dua lipa

But long before she penned feminist electro-pop smashes that now stream by the billions, her family knew her as just Dua, their precocious eldest daughter who left Kosovo as a teen to fulfill her pop star dreams by herself in London. That’s when she fully harnessed what she calls her “big sister energy” in her life and music; one can hear it now in the unshakable authority with which she sings her songs.

“She is such a big sister,” says songwriter Caroline Ailin, who first recognized Lipa’s insightful nature when they met almost a decade ago. “You process your feelings [with her], but you also walk away feeling empowered.”

In the time she spent shaping her new album, Lipa decided she would first take her own advice and start calling all the shots: in her career, in her love life, and in her image. In 2022, she ended her longtime partnership with management and publishing company TaP Music, whose roster includes outsider divas like Lana Del Rey and Caroline Polachek. Lipa subsequently hired her father as her manager and bought back the rights and masters for her entire catalog.

dua lipa

In February, Lipa inaugurated her liberated new era at the 2024 Grammy Awards. Gracing the red carpet in a custom Courrèges chain mail gown, her dyed red tresses cascading past her shoulders, she channeled a dauntless warrior queen. That night, she debuted the single “Training Season,” a new song from Radical Optimism . A jaunty disco track with theatrical flourishes of acoustic guitars, synthesizers, and live drums, it shows Lipa ramping up her bravado. “Don’t wanna have to teach you how to love me right,” she sings, issuing a notice to any less-than-suitable suitors looking to waste her time: She’s in the big leagues now. “I had gone into the studio and just said the line, ‘Training season’s over!’” Lipa recalls.

Written in November 2022, “Training Season” is a reflection on a string of dates and long-term relationships, mostly set up by her friends. Lipa’s previous relationships include Bella and Gigi’s brother Anwar Hadid, and French director Romain Gavras; more recently, she was spotted vacationing in Mexico with British actor Callum Turner . “As long as everyone knows where they stand, then you’re good,” she says with a shrug.

She speaks only obliquely of her love life these days, preferring to drop hints in song. “I was like, ‘Okay, I’m going to write down what I want,’” she says of “Training Season.” “The power of manifestation and writing things into existence with the power of words. When you know your worth, you know what you want and what you don’t want.”

“I was talking about this with one of my dancers today, because she was going through a breakup—when I was single, I didn’t wish it away. You learn so much about yourself, you know, whether it’s going on a date or spending that time alone. In the silence, you figure out who you really are,” she says. “In the grand scheme of things, I was doing research.”

dua lipa

R adical Optimism was formulated with a crack team of co-songwriters and producers: Ailin, her trusted writer; Tobias Jesso Jr., hitmaker for Adele and Harry Styles; and Danny L Harle, PC Music alumnus and self-described “rave consultant.” As a massive fan of the Australian psych act Tame Impala, Lipa also tapped bandleader Kevin Parkerto join her crew in London. “We called it The Band,” Parker says. “Not an old-school band, but a spiritual band. Each morning going into the studio, I felt like I was in the Beatles!”

Inspired in part by the freedom-seeking spirit underpinning UK club culture, R adical Optimism dovetails neatly with the recent resurgence of two nu-disco queens who rocked the clubs in the Y2K era: Kylie Minogue, who came back hard last year with “Padam Padam”; and of course Sophie Ellis-Bextor, whose “Murder on the Dancefloor” needle drop in Saltburn landed her on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time ever. In Radical Optimism , Lipa brings together live and electronic instruments to fashion her own global groove. The result is a cosmopolitan dance-pop record with a 1970s flair, and a vibrant, resounding affirmation of life.

“Dua had this focus on finding this sound, which was so elusive,” Parker adds. “But it was nice to be in the engine room of the creative process, rather than worry about being the face of it. It was the experience that I’ve been waiting for.”

“Houdini,” the first single off the album, was born shortly after Parker teased out a bass line that he’d recorded for himself, weeks before their studio sessions. Lipa was quick to put her own stamp on it, introducing a moody post-disco melody. “She started singing, and it just immediately made sense,” Parker says. “This feeling of early-’80s sleaze, in some strange, dark, sweaty club. Gloriously suffocating. Hypnotic.”

Ailin has worked with Lipa since before they penned, along with Emily Warren and Ian Kirkpatrick, her 2017 breakout hit, “New Rules”—a dance-worthy laundry list of what-not-to-dos when an ex comes orbiting back around post-breakup. Venting about real life, Ailin explains, became essential to their creative process: “We have a little yap about what’s going on, and from that it turns into a pop song.” Lipa’s moments of unmanicured catharsis, Ailin says, are what yield her most penetrating lyrics; using the firm contralto of her voice, she imparts a pop wisdom that’s as incisive as it is compassionate.

dua lipa

“That’s her superpower,” Ailin says. “It’s hard not to feel like you’re the strongest person next to her. I think she lends a little bit of that to all of us sometimes.”

If being Vacanza Queen ‘is what I’m getting, then I’ll take it. Whether I’m performing or going out, if it’s not fun, I don’t want it.’”

Born in London in 1995, Lipa is the eldest of three children in a Kosovar-Albanian family. Her parents sought refuge in the UK in 1992, before Dua was born, because of political instability in Kosovo at the time. Prior to their emigration, Dua’s father, Dukagjin, sang and played guitar in a rock band called Oda, and her mother, Anesa, studied law. The Lipas settled in the Camden area of London, and Dua was raised to speak Albanian at home and English at school.

Dua’s family returned to Kosovo in 2006, while it was still under the supervision of the United Nations. The country declared independence from neighboring Serbia in 2008, making it the youngest country in Europe. As she grew into her teens, Dua began to meditate on the horrific stories of ethnic cleansing and war crimes committed against Kosovar Albanians. It prompted a critical perspective shift for her, one that informs her values to this very day—whether that means being a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, or calling for a humanitarian cease-fire in Gaza.

“I heard stories from friends [in Kosovo] who lost family members. Houses burned. I saw them. When you have that direct communication with people who have been through [war], it opens up a completely new world, and it did for me,” she says. “I feel very close to [those suffering] injustices in the world, or inequality. Whether that be war, or coming out to your family, everyone’s got a different experience…It’s about support and learning together.”

dua lipa

Lipa was only 15 when she returned to London alone to pursue a music career. She moved into a flat in Camden with an Albanian family friend who was attending university. After watching her younger siblings grow up themselves, it was a move that’s almost unfathomable to her now. “I said to my parents: ‘I don’t know how you let me do that,’” she admits. “But I knew that I didn’t have the same opportunities that I would have in Kosovo. I was so determined. I think my parents saw parts of themselves in me, and that allowed for them to be so open-hearted and generous with that trust.”

By 17, she completed her GCSEs, or secondary school certification, and worked as a restaurant hostess to make ends meet. Working in nightclubs as a teen inevitably steeled her for the misogyny and exploitation baked into a male-dominated music industry. If she sounds well beyond her years in her songs, it’s because she earned it. “When I started [songwriting], I worked at La Bodega Negra, a Mexican restaurant that looked like a sex shop,” she recalls. “I’d finish work, then go out to whatever nightclub was happening until, like, three in the morning. Then I would wake up and go to the studio until I had my shift again at, like, 8 P.M. The music I [made] was reflective of my every day, or every night.”

After ascending the charts again with 2018’s “One Kiss” with Calvin Harris, Lipa claimed the title of Best New Artist at the 2019 Grammys. She chased her success the following year with the release of her Grammy-winning sophomore album, Future Nostalgia , which leaked early on in the COVID-19 quarantine in late March of 2020. Despite the pandemic nearly extinguishing the club scene, Future Nostalgia became the singer’s first number one album in the UK, and rendered her one of the most-listened-to female artists on Spotify. (More recently, she became the first female artist to have four songs each with over 2 billion streams on the platform.)

Upon wrapping her Future Nostalgia world tour in December 2022, Lipa finally had time to exhale, for what felt like the first time in her adult life. She embarked on getaways from the Mediterranean to India this past year, and relished dining experiences with her family and friends in tow. After she posted her vacation photos on Instagram, the internet began dubbing her the “Vacanza Queen” poking fun at her for presumably going off gallivanting for months at a time.

dua lipa

At first, the criticism felt dismissive of the years she spent without her family, toiling her way into pop superstardom. Yet perhaps it’s not just the glamorous photos from exotic locales, but also her efficiency as an artist that have concealed her hard work, making it seem magically effortless—the curse of being extremely capable all her life.

Lipa’s routine is still so regimented that it made an impression on Parker when they worked together in London.“Dua is, like, the most punctual person,” he says. “For most pop stars, it’s impossible to get to places on time. But Dua...she’s, like, apologizing profusely if she’s five minutes late!”

preview for Dua Lipa is Radically Optimistic About Being Ghosted | ELLE

Through her media company, Service95, a weekly email newsletter-turned-podcast-turned book club, she has interviewed the Afghan American novelist Khaled Hosseini and the rock’n’ roll poet Patti Smith. She’s also co-executive producing Camden , a new documentary in conjunction with Disney+ that showcases the history of her home borough in London and the many influential artists who grew up there, from Madness to Amy Winehouse.

“I’ve been busy for almost 10 years” she says. “Every single day, I’ve had some bit of work to do. But people are going to say something anyway. People say a lot of mean things about a lot of people.” And if being Vacanza Queen “is what I'm getting, then I’ll take it. Whether I’m performing or going out, if it’s not fun, I don’t want it,” she says. “You have to make room for joy. The world can be burning down, but goddamn…if you didn’t spend any of your life trying to be happy, I don't know what you’ve done.”
