Once Upon a Time in a Western

The journeyman (2001).

the journey man movie

One brother is carried off by the gang after being drug behind a horse. The younger brother hides in an outhouse and is rescued by passing priest.

Thirteen years later, Morphinist (Brad Hunt) is a morphine-addicted, cold-hearted killer. Men, women, children. It matters not.

He seemingly kills for sport, between getting high to chase away his inner demons. He’s not above sacrificing partners either, as he does during his get-away after robbing the office of the Ledbetter mining company.

Ledbetter sets out on his trail with an able scout named Silas, a loud-mouthed braggart named Horace and a vengeance-seeking cowboy named Dixie.

He also has a mysterious and very quiet stranger as part of his posse.

The stranger, of course, is the Journeyman (Daniel Lapaine), trying to track down his brother, trying to see if he can be saved.

But Morphinist has scores to settle.

That’s if enemies with a score to settle like former partner Walter P. Higgs don’t settle theirs first.

Rating 4 of 6

A low-budget Western with a bigger budget feel. Willie Nelson’s guest starring role lasts all of 2 minutes at the start of the film, but his demise leaves the film in the hands of a capable cast, including Brad Hunt as one of the more vicious villains you’ll run across.

Little touches make this film unique. Like Ezikiel Gore’s Whores. Like the young boy who’s helping hold up Leadbetter’s payroll office. Like the other bank robber who insists his victims learn his name.

The final shootout is particularly well done.

'For Love & Life' tracks one man's journey from ALS diagnosis to big-time fundraiser

In 2017, at age 37, Brian Wallach, a former attorney in the Obama administration, was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a progressive, incurable neurodegenerative disease — and was given six months to live. This, on the same day that he and his wife, Sandra Abrevaya, brought their second daughter home from the hospital.

Somehow, Wallach is still alive. Although deeply, physically compromised, the onetime federal criminal prosecutor and assistant U.S. attorney has soldiered on, co-founding (with Abrevaya) the vital nonprofit support organization I AM ALS and testifying before Congress on behalf of ALS assistance.

Wallach and Abrevaya’s efforts, which include additional lobbying work on Capitol Hill, helped lead to the 2021 passage and signage of the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act . The landmark bill, co-written by Wallach, unlocked half a billion dollars for ALS research.

Wallach and Abrevaya’s profound and vital journey was captured by filmmaker Christopher Burke, an old college friend of Wallach’s, for what would become the inspiring and uplifting Prime Video documentary “For Love & Life: No Ordinary Campaign.”

Read more: Katie Couric steps in to produce ALS campaign film

The Envelope recently chatted via Zoom with Wallach (whose limited speech capacity requires an interpreter), Abrevaya and Burke about the making of the film (shot from 2019 to 2022) and their mission to increase awareness for the devastating disease.

Let’s start from the beginning: Chris, how did the film come together, and was it always planned as a feature documentary?

Chris Burke: When I found out about Brian’s diagnosis, I offered to help in any way I could. Initially, it was to shoot a little launch promo for I AM ALS. But when I started filming, I realized there was way more going on than we could possibly encapsulate into one 60-second spot. Then, when I tagged along with Brian to his April 2019 testimony in front of the House Appropriations Committee… I was starting to see how Brian and Sandra operated and how their growing movement was coming together. I realized that we were going to be in it for the long haul.

When did you know you were shooting a full-length documentary?

Burke: When I started sharing the raw footage with my producing partner, Tim [Rummel], he was, like, “You’ve got to stick with this. What if we craft it into a feature doc?” We realized ultimately that that would be the most potentially powerful form to reach the largest number of people in a substantial way.

Brian and Sandra, were you always on board with doing the film, knowing how intimate, long and taxing the process could be?

Brian Wallach: I knew right away that it was going to be important to open up all our lives that way. People could see the good parts and the bad parts, and they could understand what ALS looks like and how it impacts people living with it. And I knew Chris would make a beautiful documentary.

Sandra Abrevaya: I was very hesitant, but it turns out every time Brian has a big new idea, I’m nervous about it. Then I end up doing it and he ends up saying, “I told you so.” One thing I did know is that Brian and I are authentically hopeful about this disease transforming from fatal to chronic and that the more we could open up about our own story and really bring people into our lives, the better we could communicate that message.

Chris, this is a fairly compact, fast-paced film, yet also quite informative. What was your approach to shaping the narrative?

Burke : My way in was Brian. I didn’t know anything about ALS any more than Brian did when he was diagnosed. That’s how it starts for a lot of people; I was learning along the way. Brian and Sandra’s love story forms the spine of [the film] but then we had to make people understand the basics of this disease: what it is, what it does to bodies, what it does to families, what it does to caregivers and how this movement, simultaneously led by these two, is combating that in such an amazing way.

Sounds like a lot to balance.

Burke: It was. We made a very conscious choice to keep it on the briefer side because it is challenging subject matter. It’s not meant to be a fully in-depth academic study. It’s designed to give a lot of different threads to pull on all under the umbrella of this personal story of Brian and Sandra, but also of the other [ALS-affected] families who we feature as well. We really wanted to underscore the cohesive community action of a lot of different people.

Brian, knowing what you know now, what do you tell people with ALS who are also given six months to live?

Wallach: To not be afraid and to ask for help, because everybody will need help along the journey. I also say that I’m more hopeful today than when I was diagnosed because we have a lot of treatments in the pipeline. And I know that some of them will help us all live longer and be here to see ALS become a chronic disease.

10 Ways Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 Could Be A "Significant Event" For The MCU

10 best avengers movie villain quotes, 10 mcu phase 1 scenes that aged poorly.

  • Peter Parker faces a new journey post- No Way Home, with Aunt May gone and relationships reset.
  • Potential for Spider-Man 4 to explore Peter's PTSD and mirror Tony Stark's journey in Iron Man 3.
  • Spider-Man likely to face "street level" threats, setting up a darker story and potential team-up with Daredevil.

Peter Parker could follow an upsetting path in Iron Man's journey according to a Spider-Man 4 theory. After Spider-Man: No Way Home , the future isn't clear for the MCU 's Spider-Man. The Homecoming trilogy was essentially a lengthy origin story for him, and he is now in a place where he can make his own destiny. Aunt May is gone, and all of Peter's relationships have been reset since no one remembers who he is. It's a situation viewers haven't seen Spider-Man in before, and it'll be refreshing to see where the series goes.

One criticism Tom Holland's Spider-Man has faced is that he often feels like Iron Man Jr. and needs to establish himself as an independent character rather than Tony Stark's apprentice. No Way Home 's ending appeared to wipe that away, since Peter has no connections to the Avengers or their resources anymore. While he may not be living off of Tony's technology, there is still one way that Peter could follow Iron Man's journey in the MCU timeline , and that includes a troubling storyline for Spider-Man 4 .

Tom Holland's Spider-Man 4 has received an exciting update, and there are some great stories to make the MCU movie the event it is teased to be.

Peter Parker Could Be Haunted By The Events of No Way Home

The events of No Way Home were the darkest moments of Peter Parker's MCU story. The Green Goblin killed Aunt May, and shortly after, Peter gave up his relationships with MJ and Ned to save the multiverse . Since no one knows who Peter is anymore, he lost many opportunities for his future, and is shown living alone in a small New York apartment. He also discovered the multiverse, and that he isn't the only Spider-Man, which would send any normal person into an existential crisis.

This all happened after Spider-Man was blipped for five years after Avengers: Infinity War , and then lost his mentor, Tony Stark, in Avengers: Endgame . Safe to say, Peter has been through the wringer for the last few years, and he finally has time to slow down and process everything that has happened to him. This could lead to many emotional complications, as he tries to come to terms with all the trauma and loss he's experienced. Spider-Man 4 could show Holland's Spider-Man experiencing PTSD, which would follow an important part of Tony's character arc.

Spider-Man's Journey Would Mirror Tony Stark's PTSD In Iron Man 3

In Iron Man 3 , Tony experiences PTSD after the events of The Avengers , where he fought aliens and barely escaped the closing wormhole. He has anxiety attacks, and he can't sleep due to constant nightmares. These experiences cause him to hyperfocus on protecting Pepper and the world from imminent threats. It was an important step in his journey, as Tony normally has a charismatic, confident persona, and his anxiety showed a different side to the character.

It would be a logical step for Spider-Man 4 to show Peter struggling to cope with everything that has happened . The young hero needs to get back into the swing of things, not only in terms of school and his career, but also as the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. However, it could be hard for him to do that at first if he tries to ignore his past trauma. This story would likely also mean that Peter would handle more localized problems before returning to multiversal, intergalactic threats with the Avengers.

A "Street Level" Threat Could Be What Peter Parker Needs To Get His Mind Right

Kevin Feige has hinted that Spider-Man will be a more "street-level" hero moving forward. He will deal with smaller-scale threats in New York City, such as Kingpin's criminal organization or any other villain from his massive comic book catalog. It's unclear what conflict Spidey will encounter, but a smaller threat could be what Peter needs to get things in order. Spider-Man has always been about helping the little guy, and helping out a local community could remind Peter of why he took on the Spider-Man mantle in the first place.

Additionally, this kind of story sets Spider-Man up to encounter other street-level heroes, like Daredevil, who could help him through his emotional trouble. Matt Murdock is a hero who has taken a lot of hits, but he always gets back up and does what's right. He could be the right hero Spider-Man needs to talk to about finding the light in a tunnel of darkness. Spider-Man 4 may be a darker story than the other MCU Spider-Man films, but it could be necessary to see Peter at his lowest so he can climb to new heights.

Spider-Man Homecoming 4

Spider-Man: Homecoming 4 is the first sequel to the MCU's Spider-Man trilogy starring Tom Holland as the titular wall-crawler. After wiping his identity for the public's memory in Spider-Man: No Way Home, Peter Parker continues his crime-fighting adventures without the aid of Iron Man technology or the support of his former allies.

The makers of five of this year’s buzzy animated features—“ Spellbound ,” “ That Christmas ,” “ The Imaginary ,” “ Ultraman: Rising ” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl”–participated in the Variety FYC Animation Preview at last week’s Annecy Animation Festival , showcasing a range of stories and animation styles during a broad discussion about their movies, creative process and business. Observed “Ultraman: Rising” director Shannon Tindle, who also co-wrote its screenplay, “We’ve got CG, we’ve got hand-drawn mixed with CG, we’ve got stop-frame animation. It’s really cool to see that all these different forms [of animation] are alive.”

The production takes some visual inspiration from Spain. Explained Jenson, “Rather than going for the Anglo look of castles and forests, we played with and pulled from old Spanish architecture, Moorish design and tile and color work, and then thrown in on top is my own personal inspiration, Mary Blair.” Blair is the late Disney legend who drew concept art for several Disney animated classics such as “Alice in Wonderland” and “Cinderella.”

Based on a trio of children’s books by Richard Curtis (“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love Actually”) “That Christmas” follows a series of entwined tales about family and friends set in a snowy seaside town during the holidays. It marks Curtis’ foray into animation, serving as the film’s writer and executive producer, and the feature directorial debut of animation vet Simon Otto (“How to Train Your Dragon” trilogy).

He also had the books’ illustrations as source material. “They were really quite innocent and sensitive in the way they were executed,” Otto said, adding that the filmmakers also “needed something that was really going to give us a chance to perform the comedy and the type of performances that we were looking for … So we fleshed something out much more three-dimensional, but we wanted to keep that sensitivity in the design, the simplicity of that.”

Also featured was Studio Ponoc’s “The Imaginary”, an anime movie coming to Netflix with a story seen through the eyes of Rudger, an imaginary friend of a young girl named Amanda. During the panel, two-time Academy Award nominee and Studio Ponoc founder Yoshiaki Nishimura, the film’s producer who also wrote the screenplay based on the novel of the same name, discussed adapting the book for the screen. “I really was taken by the story, but I could tell that it was going to be very challenging to make it into a film,” he said, speaking with the assistance of his interpreter. “Rudger is an imagined character. However, he is not a monster; he’s not a creature. He’s actually an inner self of Amanda, a human character. Therefore he’s not completely removed from the human side. But I thought that depiction of the different perspective would be very interesting, that’s my first point.”

“The second point is that because Rudger is not a human, he will be forgotten, as with all the other imaginary characters as well,” he continued. “Once that human who imagined the characters in the first place starts to forget about the imagination itself, they would disappear. But we as humans are very fragile beings as well.”

“Ultraman: Rising” is based on the Japanese Ultraman franchise, first introduced in 1966, which follows superheroes that defend against kaiju. But Tiddle (“Lost Ollie”) took a unique approach in his movie, which was animated by Industrial Light & Magic and now streaming on Netflix. “I thought it would be interesting to have a character who didn’t want to be Ultraman, whose dad had been Ultraman and there had been a rift between them, and he was kind of out of obligation, forced to be Ultraman. Then these kaiju, these monsters that they normally fight, might be the thing that unifies them.”

In the story, protagonist Ken Sato/Ultraman (Christopher Sean) reluctantly adopts a baby kaiju, bringing with it themes around family and parenting.

Tindle’s own daughter helped to shape the performance of the baby kaiju. “I have three photos that were taken within seconds of each other where she was mad at me, then she was laughing, and then she was crying and they all happened just like that,” he said. “We actually have a scene in the film where I just gave the animators those photos, and I said, I want you to make her this mercurial because that’s how kids are. They can change how they feel one second to the next.”

“Gnomes have been a part of Wallace and Gromit’s world for years,” four-time Oscar winner Park said, adding that it seemed “very natural” for Wallace to invent a smart gnome. “He becomes a kind of new favorite in the house and puts Gromit’s nose out badly.” As to the return of the cunning penguin, he adds, “With gnomes around the house, as good as they were, we were having trouble finding good motivation and incentive for them. And then it kind of was like a fabulous epiphany that dropped into our lap that this is just perfect for Feathers McGraw. And he just fitted into and solved a real story issue.”

The filmmakers also discussed character design, and how they made their characters so emotive.

Of making silent stars Gromit and Feathers McGraw so expressive, Crossingham revealed, “It’s about finding what is the absolute minimum. With Feathers especially, the power comes from his stillness. … Sometimes it’s about not moving the character and letting the camera do the work.”

“Spellbound” protagonist Ellian was given a “carefree, athletic build,” Jensen explained, adding, “She’s sharp, and she’s smart, and she’s overwhelmed. So the design also has a lot of innocence in it. Big, wonderful eyes–someone who’s maybe taking on more than they’re prepared to.”

Otto described the process as “the joy of finding that emotional truth in a character and understanding how they fit into a story, but then also finding the leave of caricature that makes it really entertaining and fun to watch.”

The group also talked about the storyboard process. “We’ve got to get it right. We can’t go back and really change shots after we’ve animated them, but I think the most valuable thing is it’s a great place to make your mistakes,” Crossingham explained. “You learn so much from a storyboard and you learn a lot about your story and where you need to take it visually. And it’s just a great creative journey.”

Willie Mays

Willie Mays, the incandescent center fielder for the New York and San Francisco Giants whose unmatched blend of speed and power made him a cultural icon and one of the finest players in the history of baseball, died Tuesday. He was 93.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93,” the San Francisco Giants shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account.

Where to stream 'federer: twelve final days' online for free, anouk aimée, enigmatic star of 'a man and a woman,' 'la dolce vita' and '8 1/2,' dies at 92.

“I’m not able to get to Birmingham this year but will follow the game back here in the Bay Area,” he told the San Francisco Chronicle on Monday. “My heart will be with all of you who are honoring the Negro League ballplayers, who should always be remembered, including all my teammates on the Black Barons. I wanted to thank Major League Baseball, the Giants, the Cardinals and all the fans who’ll be at Rickwood or watching the game. It’ll be a special day, and I hope the kids will enjoy it and be inspired by it.”

Inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame on his first try in 1979, Mays finished his 22-year MLB career with 660 home runs, the third most (behind only Hank Aaron and Babe Ruth) at the time of his retirement. (He since has been passed by his godson, Barry Bonds, Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols.) The Alabama native also collected 3,283 hits, good for 11th on the all-time list. (These stats were subject to an MLB decision to elevate Negro League baseball, where Mays got his start, to “major league” status.)

An aerodynamic 5-foot-11 and 180 pounds in his prime, Mays also led the National League in stolen bases four times and was acrobatic in the outfield. One of his plays, accomplished at the cavernous Polo Grounds in Manhattan during the 1954 World Series, ranks among the most jaw-dropping the game has ever seen.

“From coast to coast in New York and San Francisco, Willie inspired generations of players and fans as the game grew and truly earned its place as our National Pastime,” MLB commissioner Robert D. Manfred Jr. wrote in a statement following his death. “And yet his incredible achievements and statistics do not begin to describe the awe that came with watching Willie Mays dominate the game in every way imaginable. We will never forget this true Giant on and off the field. On behalf of Major League Baseball, I extend my deepest condolences to Willie’s family, his friends across our game, Giants fans everywhere, and his countless admirers across the world.”

In 1999, ESPN placed him No. 8 on its list of the 100 greatest athletes of the 20th century, trailing only Michael Jordan, Ruth, Muhammad Ali , Jim Brown, Wayne Gretzky, Jesse Owens and Jim Thorpe.

“If somebody came up and hit .450, stole 100 bases and performed a miracle in the field every day, I’d still look you right in the eye and tell you that Willie was better,” Leo Durocher, his manager with the New York Giants, wrote in his 1975 book,  Nice Guys Finish Last . “He could do the five things you have to do to be a superstar: hit, hit with power, run, throw and field. And he had the other magic ingredient that turns a superstar into a super-superstar. Charisma.”

As far as real show business goes, Mays appeared with Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis on the  Colgate Comedy Hour  in 1954, on two episodes of The Donna Reed Show  in 1964 and on other comedies like Bewitched  — could warlock-like powers be the real source of his tremendous abilities? —  My Two Dads  and  Mr. Belvedere .

DONNA REED SHOW

Wesley Snipes and Omar Epps, respectively, played a speedster by the name of Willie Mays Hayes in  Major League  (1989) and its 1994 sequel.

Mays also can be heard on the 1954 tune “Say Hey (The Willie Mays Song),” recorded by The Treniers ( Quincy Jones served as the musical director on the recording session), and he received shout-outs from John Fogerty on “Centerfield” and Chuck D. on “The Amazing Willie Mays.”

In the 2022 HBO documentary Say Hey, Willie Mays , directed by Nelson George, longtime Giants broadcaster Jon Miller said he didn’t think of Mays “as a mere ballplayer or even as a human being as I look back on it, but rather as a superhero.

“Willie Mays walks down the street and fathers say to their sons, ‘There goes Willie Mays, the greatest player to ever play this game.'”

The Boston Braves began scouting Mays when he was 15 and still a student at Fairfield Industrial High School. (Imagine that: Mays could have played in the same Braves outfield as Aaron.) At 16, he joined Birmingham, then was signed by the Giants in 1950 for $4,000 (the Barons got $10,000) and assigned to a minor-league club in Trenton, New Jersey.

In 1951, Mays was hitting .477 for the Triple-A Minneapolis Millers when he was called up to New York on May 25, 1951. A couple of weeks past his 20th birthday, he was the youngest black player to ever reach the majors. (Jackie Robinson had broken baseball’s color barrier just four years earlier.)

After starting his MLB career 0-for-12 and 1-for-26 — his lone hit was a home run off Warren Spahn of the Braves at the Polo Grounds — Mays went on to hit .274 with 20 home runs in 121 games and was named the NL’s Rookie of the Year.

That remarkable season also saw the Giants erase a 13 1/2-game deficit to tie Brooklyn at the end of the regular season, and Mays was on deck when Bobby Thomson homered off the Dodgers’ Ralph Branca in the bottom of the ninth inning in the last game of a three-game playoff series.

The blow (“The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant! The Giants win the pennant!” howled play-by-play man Russ Hodges) sent Mays and his jubilant teammates into the World Series against the New York Yankees, though they would lose in six games.

In the eighth inning of Game 1 with the score tied, none out and two men on, Cleveland slugger Vic Wertz sent a towering drive 440 feet away from home plate. Mays, playing shallow, ran full speed to make an over-the-shoulder catch, then spun and fired the ball back to the infield. (And yes, he lost his cap.)

“There was no doubt I was going to catch the ball,” Mays insisted. He said the throw was the most impressive part of the play.

He carried the Giants to the World Series again in 1962, but they lost in seven games to the Yankees.

At age 41, Mays came back to New York to play for the Mets, a team created in 1962 in the wake of the Giants and Dodgers fleeing to the West Coast. Journeyman Jim Beauchamp gave up his No. 24 so Mays could keep the number that he made famous, and the legend helped New York make it to the World Series against the Oakland Athletics in 1973, his final season.

Mays, perhaps too old to play center field, slipped while trying to catch a fly ball in the sun in Game 2, and the Mets fell in seven games.

“By the time he retired,” Hirsch wrote, Mays “was an American icon whose athletic brilliance and stylistic bravado contributed to the assimilation of blacks during the turbulent civil rights era, a distinctive figure of ambition, sacrifice and triumph who became a lasting cultural touchstone for a nation in search of heroes.”

Mays had served as special assistant to the president of the San Francisco Giants since 1986. Oracle Park, home of the Giants, is located at 24 Willie Mays Plaza and features a larger-than-life statue of him in front of the main entrance.

He founded the Say Hey Foundation in 2000 to assist underprivileged youth. In addition to Bonds, survivors include his son, Michael.

“I never had a day when somebody would not come up to me and say, ‘I saw you make a play, I love you because of what you did for me,” Mays said in the HBO documentary. “It made me very very proud because not only did I play baseball, but the people enjoyed what I did.”

New York Times Connections word game

Need today's Connections answer? Read on.

Need the answers for the June 18  New York Times Connections puzzle ? To me, Wordle is more of a vocabulary test, but Connections is more of a brainteaser. You're given 16 words and asked to put them into four groups that are somehow connected. Sometimes they're obvious, but the game editor knows how to trick you by using words that can fit in more than one group.

And do you also play Wordle? We've got today's Wordle answer and hints too.

Plus, we've got  today's answer  for Strands, a new game from the Times that's still in beta, plus  some general tips for playing that game .

Hints for today's Connections groups

Here are four hints for the groupings in today's Connections puzzle, ranked from the easiest, yellow group to the tough (and sometimes bizarre) purple group:

Yellow group hint: Clicker commands

Green group hint: Secrete or conceal

Blue group hint: Cocktail decorations

Purple group hint: 007 film words

How to play Connections

Playing is easy. Winning is hard. Look at the 16 words and mentally assign them to related groups of four. Click on the four words you think go together. The groups are coded by color, though you don't know what goes where until you see the answers. The yellow group is the easiest, then green, then blue, and purple is the toughest. Look at the words carefully and think about related terms. Sometimes the connection has to do with just a part of the word. Once, four words were grouped because each started with the name of a rock band, including "Rushmore" and "Journeyman."
