About the company.

Stephen E. Ambrose founded Stephen Ambrose Historcal Tours. The author of several best-selling books, including Undaunted Courage, co-writer and executive producer of the epic HBO series Band of Brothers, and founder of The National WWII Museum, Dr. Ambrose led his first tour, D-Day to the Rhine, in the late 1970s with his friend Peter McLean when he was a professor at the University of New Orleans. His passion for teaching Americans about their nation’s heritage and her heroes motivated him to found Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours along with his niece Dr. Edie Ambrose, her husband, Yakir Katz, and Stephen’s son, Andy Ambrose.

Throughout his career, Dr. Ambrose led many trips to the places that he wrote about, which was a natural extension of his enthusiasm for investigating history. Whether visiting Omaha Beach with D-Day veterans to pay homage to the fallen, following the path of Lewis and Clark down the Missouri River, or tromping the battlefields of the Civil War, he sought to enlighten, entertain, and educate with his tours.

Today, Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours carries on his legacy, continuing to preserve and expand the carefully conceived and executed historical itineraries inspired by his life’s work.

Just returned from Normandy for the 75th Anniversary of D-Day with SAHT and the Commemorative Air Force (CAF). This was by far the most fascinating trip I have ever been on! We were taken from site to site with ease. The level of knowledge from our historians, Pete and Dave was top notch! My friends and family on Facebook were thrilled at the knowledge of WWII that gained and was able to share with them thru pictures and stories. Thank you to Jennifer D, Claire and Dave at SAHT for your organizational skills and your ability to keep all 70 of us on task!

Summer 2013, the "Footsteps of Patton" tour was fantastic. My Dad, WWII veteran of the USMC, and my son, graduating from high school, had the trip of a lifetime. The guides, Kevin, Marty and Ret'd General Bell gave us one heck of an experience. Their historical knowledge enhanced our trip; the history comes alive when they are retelling it. We learned so much. The beauty of the countries, as they are now, belies the heartbreaking scenes of yesteryear. Our guides made the trip. It was wonderful spending time with these men. As I said, they were rock solid on the history, but it was not only that, they were so very personable as well (I am looking at you, Marty). Also, the guys treated my 88 year old Dad like gold. And he can sometimes be ever so much a tiny bit cantankerous. I can't get enough of how they treated him, what a joy; it chokes me up. Stephen Ambrose's company chose wonderful and unique accommodations. Among the places we stayed were a chateau, in Normandy and the castle on Mont St. Michel. And when chateaus and castles were not in the area, we stayed in wonderful European hotels. The food was hard to describe, always top shelf, and the places we shared meals were always amazing. Our comfortable tour bus of course had us sitting up high; this way we could drink in the gorgeous countryside scenery with ease. All the historical sites were narrated by our guides. We saw the beaches of D-Day and the hedgerows that so stymied our soldiers. We toured the Maginot Line and the Battle of the Bulge site. We visited several selected museums and one of these even opened up special hours to accommodate our group. We visited the city centers in Rheims, Belgium and Luxumborg. I cannot praise this company, at least this particular tour with these guides, highly enough. Five plus stars, in my opinion. My husband and I are committed to finding the time to tour with this company again.

I took the Stephen Ambrose Tour for the 70th D-Day Anniversary. It encompassed the Band of Brothers Tour, the ceremony at Omaha Beach and the extended tour into Berlin. During this trip I had 3 hosts, Kevin Hymel, Johnny Ricketts and Chris Anderson. All 3 hosts were extremely knowledgeable and professional. Being that were on a very busy tour, some things did not go as planned. The staff at Stephen Ambrose Tours worked diligently behind the scenes to make sure that things were made right. My trip was informative, entertaining and extremely memorable. If you are on the fence about taking The Band of Brothers Tour, I would recommend getting off the fence and enrolling in one of the tours.

Scam Tours As an attorney I asked Yakov Katz for a contract when I gave my deposit for my tour. Beware insist on one. He was not refunded our money due to to corona virus he said refunds would be based on contract. Am now contacting District Attorney.

Beware! We went on a Stephen Ambrose tour. The tour itself was satisfactory overall, albeit with several accommodation issues and rushed though certain museums. However, if you are a married couple, beware. Tour guides over extend their flirtations and sexual conduct with their clients. So much in fact they hound and attempt to groom their targets for relationships well after the tour ends. This level of conduct & harassment is clearly unacceptable as well as unprofessional. I’ve been told (by their tour guides themselves) this is a culture and has happened with SAT tours ongoing. If a tour guide innocently asks to have your social media or ph contacts, you are being targeted. Expect them to hound you sexually. Beware! This conduct has cast a very negative cloud over our entire experience.

Yes, a tour guide told me the same thing and talked incessantly about his past conquests from previous tours. Best to find another tour group as there are many good ones out there where you won't feel like you are on match.com.

Review: I recently spent over $6,000 to take the 70th Anniversary D Day tour with this company. It was to be the trip of a lifetime and it was a huge splurge for me. I picked Ambrose Tours because of my respect for historian/author Stephen Ambrose, their reputation with WW2 historical-based tours, and, because we were covering so much ground, for the convenience of leaving the tour details to them. Because of the popularity of the 70th anniversary, I believe that Ambrose Tours overextended themselves and could not deliver the promised first class services and itinerary. They usually handle 2 buses of 40 people on their DDay to the Rhine tours; this year, they booked 9. They did not book hotels in a timely fashion, so instead of the first class accommodations were were promised, we were booked into some horrendous 2 star hotels (I have pictures), and in Normandy, a hotel that was so far from the events of the day, we had to travel two hours to reach the ceremonies. I complained when I got the very late itinerary, less than a month before we were to leave, and was assured the hotels would be top notch. Some were fine, others were horrendous. From the bus that broke down that passengers had to fix, to missing many of the promised sites due to the fact our group was booked into a hotel almost 2 hours from the heart of Normandy, to losing our Ambrose staff member midway through the trip, my luggage being abandoned in the street because no one was overseeing our travel, to the worst of it: I was the only solo female and I was charged an $800 supplement when single men were not, clearly discriminatory. This trip was a terrible disappointment, and a badly mismanaged. I will always cherish the memories of what we did see, but will have to book another trip to Normandy to see the major sites our group did not make it to. How do I know this? When I crossed paths with the tour groups booked in hotels closer to the beaches and key sites, they regaled us with pictures and everything they had done that we did not.Desired Settlement: Originally, I asked Ambrose Tours to come up with a rebate amount that would be fair. They were unwilling to take any responsibility for any of their mishandling, either before or after the tour. When I realized they were not going to do the right thing, I proposed a reasonable solution: that they refund my single supplement and one night in the worst hotel I was forced to stay in. I received a check for $416, with no letter, no explanation as to why they ignored my letter, detailing issues.

Stephen Ambrose Tours 70th Anniversary D Day

I recently awarded myself a European trip to visit the historical sites of D Day. I searched through the internet to find a reputable tour guide company. After much deliberation I chose Stephen Ambrose Tours. I booked the event and signed on for the extended tour into Berlin. In the coarse of my trip I had three different historians, all of which were extremely qualified. They were all very knowledgeable, interesting and fun. This event was very significant and brought in huge crowds to Normandy, France. When a problem did surface the staff of Stephen Ambrose worked diligently behind the scenes to make things right.I highly recommend Stephen Ambrose Tours to the WWii enthusiast their staff is passionate and the company's experience in historical tours is second to none.

My father and I finally took a long anticipated trip to Normandy. Sylvain was absolutely exceptional in personalizing a private tour for us. His knowledge of the area and the period was nothing short of remarkable. He made certain that the trip exceeded our expectations. Look no further for your tour experience.

My Dad was in the 61st Recce Regiment landing on Gold beach on D-Day so I asked Sylvain to organise a full day tour (for 4 of us) to see the major landmarks but also to specifically follow my Dad's footsteps. We had an incredible day. We visited La Cambe German cemetary, Omaha beach, Longues sur Mer, Arromanche and then Gold beach to drink a toast of Calvados to Dad's memory and all those who took part in D-Day and the battle of Normandy. Then on to a private tour of the museum at Tilly sur Seulles, a town that was wiped off the map on June 9th 1944. The great thing about this small museum is that it houses a lot of personal effects - it's very moving. I read a lot about D-day, but we were all completely overawed seeing the enormity of the task, the risk taken, the scale of Overlord and what the troops and civilians endured. A great (not to say emotional) day thanks to Sylvain Kast of d-day-experience tours who organized our whole day, including a most excellent lunch of traditional moules. Sylvain's knowledge and enthusiasm made our day - he's worth every penny. A tip for travelers - 1 day is the absolute minimum you need and even then you will only scratch the surface of what there is to see - the scale of operation Overlord was enormous.

A reputable English historical guide recommended at I use Sylvain Kast as a World War 2 guide throughout Normandy. I was familiar with the history and places of D-Day however I hired Sylvain for 4 days and asked him to put together a detailed agenda for Normandy. Sylvain provided an exceptional itinerary covering the British, American, Canadian and German sectors. He was available for 9 hours each day and met us, on-time, each morning at our Hotel. He drove us to each sector and then provided a thorough guide and explanation of each sector including many visits to famous locations and also to “off the beaten track” locations which proved to be very interesting. Sylvain’s knowledge of the battles, armies, divisions, specific persons, locations etc was excellent. He was also very personable, highly intelligent and his use-of-english was excellent. Overall I would highly recommend the services provided by Sylvain as you will not be disappointed and your trip will be worthwhile and enjoyable. 11 out of 10!

I was the one of our group of 3 couples that planned our trip to Normandy during the week of the 70th anniversary. Having emailed back and forth with Sly, he told me exactly which trains to take from Paris and what time and really eased any anxiety I had. We arrived in the morning around 9:30am and were pleasantly surprised when we all met Sly. His van was very comfortable for all of us. Sly is so knowledgable about everything and more that you would want to know about Normandy. He will cater a tour exactly to your needs. There were 6 of us, all in our 30s, all American. Every question we asked, Sly knew the answer, and amazingly always knew the little details. Never once consulting a book, but providing his own maps and pictures to help explain even further. He even showed us the exact place where a scene in Band of Brothers played out. The guys in our group really loved that. We went to the German cemetery, St. Mere eglise, pont du Hoc, Utah beach, Omaha beach and the American cemetery. We even stopped at the most amazing spot for a leisurely lunch. The planning was perfect and was everything we wanted it to be. I highly recommend Sly for your tour. We wouldn't have changed a thing! He drove us back to the train station and we were on our way back to Paris around 6:30pm. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Ashley, Dallas, TX

Our tour with Sylvain "Sly" Kast was the highlight of a 16 day trip to France. We opted for a half day tour, which included the German Cemetery, Pointe du Hoc, Omaha Beach, and of course, the American Cemetery. Sly picked us up at the hotel on time, and was engaging and friendly. Having read a good deal about D-Day, it was readily apparent that Sly had a great expertise in all things WWII. Every bit of the day was fantastic. Others hav said it but it is true: You can find these sights on your own, but Sylvain brings you to places and tells you things you would never know. For example, he showed us where the Germans hid the guns that were removed from Pointe du Hoc. One bonus was that Sylvain was more than happy to speak French with me, although his English was excellent. We kept more to English so as not to keep Gazpacho Gal out of the loop, Highly recommended.

Under Yakir’s leadership, the company has continued to carry on Dr. Ambrose’s legacy. His youth on a kibbutz in Israel, experience as an IDF paratrooper, and extensive travel in the U.S. and Europe have given Yakir a keen understanding of international cultures, travel, and the military. He has applied this experience and knowledge to help earn Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours the reputation for offering the highest quality historical and WWII tours in the United States and Europe. He lives in New Orleans with his wife, Edie Ambrose, and two daughters, one of whom he hopes will carry on his love for historical travel that he shared with Dr. Ambrose.

Dr. Edie Ambrose

Edie Ambrose, Ph.D., Historian

Edie Ambrose, Stephen Ambrose’s niece, served as his teaching assistant at the University of New Orleans. She received her Ph.D. in history at Tulane University and helped her uncle with the formation and development of Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours. Edie is a regular consultant to our team of historians and is instrumental in designing new tours to offer to our guests as well as in creating deeper historical perspectives for our existing tours. She currently teaches American History and Western Civilization at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Claire brings an impressive expertise in travel logistics, as well as a love of culture, to her position as Operations Director for Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours. Her fluency in French and understanding of the culture has been an asset in booking hotels, chateaux and transportation on our WWII tours. Her extensive experience in the hospitality and travel industry includes working at the Beverly Wilshire hotel in Hollywood and Embassy Suites in Atlanta, as well as 20 years as the Director of Operations for Spectacular Sports Specials, where she organized tours to major events throughout the world—Super Bowl, Masters, Final Four, Kentucky Derby, All-Star game, World Cup Soccer and the Olympics.

Band Of Brothers Tour

Has anyone been on or known anyone that has taken a Stephen Ambrose Band of Brothers Tour? If yes, can you share any information?

No, but we did take a Band of Brothers tour with Dale Booth. I think there were 6 of us in a van and he did a marvelous tour. He’s met several of them as well as a number of veterans from D-Day and had lots of information to share as well as knowing exactly where events occurred.

Overlord Tours also has a Band of Brothers tour, so that's another one you could look at - https://www.overlordtour.com/product/tour-3-omaha-band-of-brothers-full-day-tour/ . I believe they can also do personalized tours, if you have particular sites you want to see.

Also, check out the tours offered by the National World War II Museum, which offers a Band of Brothers tour. However, their tours are expensive.

In September 2019, a Stephen Ambrose BofB Tour group was staying at our hotel in Bastogne. A very elderly group, and I say that as an elderly person! I heard comments from other guides and at a museum about that company - I won't repeat those comments because I have no personal knowledge.

I had looked at the SABofB tour that included Battle of the Bulge sites, but decided against it. Looking at that group, I don't see how they could have handled the itinerary on the website unless they just did a lot of drive-bys and stops for a quick photo op.

Thank you for your replies. After a little more digging, I found quite a few pretty bad reviews. I think I was a bit overwhelmed at making up our own itinerary because the trip will again be based a lot on my son's interests and he is hard to pin down this long before the trip. On the other hand, he never complains about my choices.

A vision is starting to come together in my head. I would welcome any other suggestions and experiences related to Bastogne.

.....maybe start in Paris to Normandy to Bastogne then stay in Belgium or go up to Amsterdam. Lots of great choices.

We went from Paris to Reims, just long enough in Reims to see the Surrender Museum.

https://musees-reims.fr/fr/musees/musee-de-la-reddition/

Then we took the train from Reims to Luxembourg; and a car service took us from the Luxembourg train station to our hotel in Bastogne. Then 2 incredible days with Reg Jans and his team for Battle of the Bulge sites. The same car service took us back to Luxembourg, so we could catch a train back to Paris, and make our way to Gare St. Lazare for a train ride to Bayeux.

This was our 2nd time in Normandy. We had wanted to book Overlord's Hedgerows tour, but they didn't get enough people; so we did a 1 day repeat tour of Omaha/Utah sites, and a British and Canadian highlights tour.

From Bayeux we went to Saint-Malo by train. An unexpected highlight of the trip was the 1939-1945 Memorial outside of Saint-Malo in Alet - a walk along the coast line. This is a restored German bunker. We just happened to walk up a few minutes before the guided tour started. The tour was in French, but they had an abbreviated syllabus in English, and the guide took great pains to make sure we knew what was going on.

Feel free to message me for more details. But above all, get Reg Jans.

One other suggestion.....

If you want more of a personalized tour to visit specific sites, you might consider this guide - http://www.visitdday.com/ . This will be a more expensive option but will allow you to see as much as possible and get as much out of the experience as possible. You might want to contact him and get a price quote.

EP and Ken,

Thanks so much for the information. I will definitely use the information!!

Yesterday I went on the all day Band of Brothers tour provided by Overlord tours. Enjoyed it very much, our guide Janick was very knowledgeable and provided many details about the D-day invasion. The tour covers a lot of territory and stops at these locations. MORNING: Longues-sur-Mer Battery – Omaha Beach – American Cemetery of Colleville – Pointe du Hoc. AFTERNOON: 1.5 hour lunch stop at Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Airborne Museum – Crash of the C47 # 66 at Beuzeville-au-Plain – Marmion’s farm – Brecourt Manor – Angoville-au-Plain – Drop Zone D – Carentan. You can private message me if you have any questions

Thank you Scott!

"An unexpected highlight of the trip...." Thanks for this singular piece of information on the related WW2 site near St Malo. I already had a cultural reason to see St Malo but this military site is certainly another incentive.

Founded by Stephen E. Ambrose

Stephen E. Ambrose founded Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours, but as everyone who loves history knows his legacy reaches far beyond our historical and WWII tour company. Dr. Ambrose was the author of several best-selling books, including D-Day: June 6, 1944 ,  Undaunted Courage and Band of Brothers. He was a co-executive producer of the epic HBO series Band of Brothers, which was based on his book .  He founded the D-Day Museum in New Orleans, which has grown into The National WWII Museum.

Stephen Ambrose led his first tour, the D-Day to the Rhine tour, in the late 1970s with his friend Peter McLean when he was a professor at the University of New Orleans. His passion for teaching Americans about their nation’s heritage and her heroes motivated him to found Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours along with his niece Dr. Edie Ambrose, her husband, Yakir Katz, and Stephen’s son, Andy Ambrose.

Throughout his career, Stephen Ambrose led many trips to the places that he wrote about, a natural extension of his enthusiasm for investigating history. Whether visiting Omaha Beach with D-Day veterans to pay homage to the fallen, following the path of Lewis and Clark down the Missouri River, or tromping the battlefields of the Civil War, he sought to enlighten, entertain, and educate with his tours.

American-Owned, Family-Operated Company

Today, owner Dr. Edie Ambrose, who served as Stephen Ambrose’s teaching assistant at UNO, and her husband carry on his legacy, continuing to preserve and expand the carefully conceived and executed historical and WWII tours inspired by his life’s work. The knowledge that comes from Stephen Ambrose as Eisenhower’s biographer, the expert WWII speakers he could garner, and his interviews with the men who fought on D-Day and in Normandy continue to inform our historical and tours.

As it was when Dr. Ambrose was leading the D-Day to the Rhine Tour, we have only the most qualified historians lead our historical and WWII tours. Whether it is the history of WWII, the  Civil War or Lewis and Clark , our historians are leaders in their field and world-renowned authors. They have personally interviewed thousands of D-Day and WWII veterans on the very battlefields where they fought, making our WWII tours unmatched in their authenticity.

Our historians also travel with the tour 24/7. You will enjoy spending evenings with them as you discuss the days events over dinner and drinks.
