There’s nothing about this family-friendly movie that’s outrageously offensive, but there’s nothing about it that’s particularly interesting, well-executed, or inventively conceived either.

A screenplay that never quite clicks on all cylinders. There are too many scenes dealing with relationships that really halt any momentum.

Journey 2 is simply magical.

Undeniably an exhilarating family friendly, action adventure that'll no doubt thrill younger audiences.

Like its predecessor, Journey 2: The Mysterious Island is a race against time to survive, but the inclusion of new characters adds a little more interest.

For a family, this is an agreeable Saturday outing, largely because director Brad Peyton doesn't set his sight higher than the material actually is.

"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" is light, airy family entertainment that actually ends up being too light and airy.

It's a harmless, lighthearted film with wooden acting, a nice message about accepting your parents-whoever they are-and again, lots of ridiculous CGI.

Hailing from Chicago, Illinois, Nathan Chester is a professional cruise ship singer alongside his girlfriend, Emily Viancourt , with whom he founded Em&N Productions . He also enjoys a good cheesecake every now and then.

Chester kicked off the second episode of the season with a stirring cover of Al Green's "Take Me to the River" for his Blind Audition, which scored two Chair Turns from John Legend and Dan + Shay . "I want to bring back James Brown-style Motown," explained Chester before choosing to board Team Legend.

"Oh, I love Nathan," the veteran Coach proclaimed. "What a soulful, powerful voice. I love that he's so committed to this throwback, soulful style. You can just tell he's not afraid of the moment. I think Nathan's gonna go far."

Chester subsequently won his Battle  against Bryan Olesen, though the latter was saved by a Playoff Pass. Legend decided the two contestants would sing a duet of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" because "they can belt, they're soulful, they're powerful," he explained. "This song has that power that I know these artists can deliver."

When it came to Knockouts , Chester beat out Val T. Webb with a cover of "Fooled Around and Fell in Love" by Elvin Bishop. "Nathan, it felt cinematic, the way you delivered the performance," Legend said. "It felt like we were in a movie about that era of music and you were playing this amazing character that you understood. Really powerful."

The singer showed off his physical prowess (and earned a spot in the Lives Shows) during the Playoffs when he performed a surprise split while belting out "Oh! Darling!" by The Beatles. Legend dubbed it Chester's "best performance yet," going on to add, "You do it with such conviction and enthusiasm and such great execution. It's not all tricks, it's not all splits, it's not all the outfit. You can sing, man. You made an emphatic statement about you deserving to be in the Live Shows."

Throughout the Live broadcasts, he has sung "(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher and Higher" by Jackie Wilson; "Try a Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding; and "Just Like Heaven" by The Cure (a three-way cover alongside Maddi Jane and Bryan Olesen).

Dune Part Two picks up where Dune Part One left, finding Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) duking it out against House Harkonnen with the help of the Fremen. The two films are based on the first Frank Herbert Dune novel and set up the plot for the third film, Dune Messiah. Part Two was released exclusively in theaters in March, following Part One's simultaneous theatrical and streaming release in 2021. While Part Two became available to rent or buy in April, it had yet to make its way to a streaming service until now. 

Both installments come from Denis Villeneuve, the filmmaker behind Arrival, Bladerunner 2049, and Sicario. Part Two features an all-star cast beyond just Chalamet, including performances from Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, and Anya Taylor-Joy.

The Biggest Dune 2 Book Change Redefines Paul’s Entire Journey

In Dune: Part Two, Paul must head south. But why?

This Dune: Part Two article contains spoilers.

For most casual fans and hardcore spice addicts alike, Dune: Part Two is a triumph. Not only did Denis Villeneuve get to complete his visionary adaptation of the first Frank Herbert Dune novel (phew!) but he was also able to infuse his cinematic trip to Arrakis with modern sensibilities. For longtime fans, Dune: Part Two is not the most faithful filmed version of the first book, but it’s much closer to the text than the 1984 version and feels bigger and grander than the (more faithful) 2000 miniseries version . To put it simply, Dune: Part Two , combined with Part One , is (probably) the best-filmed version of Dune we’re likely to ever get. Fidelity to a book is never entirely possible with adaptations, nor is it necessarily desirable. As Villeneuve told Den of Geek back in 2021: “When you adapt it’s an act of vandalism. You will change things.”

Yes, Villeneuve makes some pretty huge changes to Herbert’s original story, but none as huge as how he handles Paul Atreides’ destiny. Let’s look at the one alteration from the novel that is probably more important than all the other changes combined.

While much has been made of the way Dune: Part Two revises the arc of Chani (Zendaya), and the fact that Alia (briefly, Anya Taylor-Joy)  is simply not born in this version of Dune , we’ve all been collectively less obsessed with the way the movie changes the geographical journey of Paul Atreides. In fact, Paul’s deliberate choice to first avoid “the south” and then, actively go into the south and seek the “southern fundamentalists,” is an invention of the movie, and you won’t find it in the original Herbert novel at all.

To be clear, the book does mention “the southern regions” and “southern reaches” a few times. But, these moments have nothing to do with a sect of specifically more fanatical Fremen. On page 234 (in the current Kindle edition), Kynes lies to Jessica, feigning knowledge of the southern area, saying “Very little’s known of the deep desert. And almost nothing of the southern region.” And then, much later (page 746 of the Kindle version), the Emperor needles the Baron about the southern regions, saying, “Tell me, my dear Baron, have you investigated the southern polar regions of Arrakis?” This second moment is replicated in Dune: Part Two pretty faithfully, at the start of the last 30 minutes of the movie, when Christopher Walken’s Emperor rasps, “Baron, do you have any idea who this Muad’Dib could be?” And then, in the same scene, says, as in the book, “Baron, have you ever investigated the south regions of Arrakis?”

In the book, the idea is that the Harkonnens have vastly miscalculated the population of the Fremen in general. Because they believed nobody could survive in the southern regions, countless Fremen were able to overpower the Harkonnens. But the movie takes this all one step further by creating a group of wildly religious Fremen in the south who are more inclined to follow Muad’Dib and his holy war than other non-southern Fremen.

In Dune: Part Two, about 20 minutes in, Shishakli (Souheila Yacoub) puts it like this: “These are old southern beliefs…Southern tribes believe a messiah will come and deliver us from evil.” After Paul learns of these Southern Fundamentalists, he actively fears his own future visions of what will happen if he radicalizes the faithful. This is broadly true to the book, but the word “Fundamentalists” appears nowhere, not one time, in the novel Dune . The idea of galvanizing the south is a matter of numbers, rather than ideology. And that’s because, in the book, we’re meant to believe that the sneaky work of the Bene Gesserit’s Missionaria Protectiva program was comprehensive, that almost all the Fremen are indoctrinated with the legend of the Lisan al-Gaib, not just specific sects of them.

In Dune: Part Two , we, notably, don’t meet many southern Fremen as characters per se, save for Stilgar (Javier Bardem), who becomes the one face of this monolith of fanatics. This idea creates a geographical pivot that Paul literally chooses to make in order for the rest of the movie to happen, which, although the result is the same, is not how it goes down in the book. After Paul pleads with Chani and the other Fremen that “I can’t south,” Chani reminds us the reason why: “He’s afraid of the fundamentalists.”

That said, Paul eventually takes a sandworm ride to the south anyway, sublimating his fear of becoming a fundamentalist messiah into what he rationalizes is the only way to win the day. Again, the result of this more or less matches up with the novel, but Paul’s decision to make a physical journey to a specific region, full of followers, mostly exists in Dune 2 to make his ascendency to the Fremen’s messiah a little more explicable.

Unlike the book, Paul and Jessica aren’t in the desert with the Fremen for a few years, but rather, a few months. And so, the movie needed a way for Paul to gain his power—and army—much more quickly. This is the true reason for the existence of the “southern fundamentalists” in Dune: Part Two . They allow us to believe that Paul has a massive power base, just waiting for him to take advantage of. His hesitancy to do this, to go south, then creates narrative tension in the film, whereas in the novel, time merely passes and we understand that Paul’s forces rallied around him more gradually, all aided by the religious propaganda planted on Arrakis centuries early.

This change broadly works and keeps the story of Dune on track. But it is one of the more complex structural changes from book to film. One might think the Fremen of the movie would be less zealous than their counterparts in the book, but in a sense, the movie amps up that quality, at least in this brief time period, for the purposes of making us worried. It’s fascinating stuff, seeing the interplay between the text, and the film, and wondering which version of Paul—Book Paul or Movie Paul—had more fanatical followers. Watching Dune: Part Two with a copy of the book Dune on your lap may not be everyone’s idea of a great viewing experience, but if you’re streaming the new movie at home this weekend, it could be the best way to unlock the secrets of Arrakis.

Michael Strahan's Daughter Isabella Strahan Details Memory Loss Amid Cancer Treatment

Michael strahan's 19-year-old daughter isabella strahan got candid on a new side effect of her cancer journey, saying, "i can't remember a single thing.".

Isabella Strahan  is dealing with a new side effect during her cancer treatments.

Michael Strahan 's daughter—who was  diagnosed in October with medulloblastoma , a malignant tumor on the base of the brain—shared that new medications she's taking is affecting her memory, leading to full days that are seemingly wiped from her mind.

"I don't remember Tuesday," Isabella said in a video posted to her  YouTube channel May 22 , "'cause I'm given this drug to protect my hearing and just because I have a reaction to it, they give me Ativan. And for some reason—this happened last time too—I can't remember a single thing about that day."

She said  in her May 21 video update  that she began taking Ativan (also known as Lorazepam) to help combat effects of the other drug. She explained that the unnamed medication—which is in clinical trials, according to the teen—protects her hearing but makes her experience?? "rigor," meaning she starts shaking and gets very cold.

And while in that same video update, the 19-year-old also could also be seen enjoying a sandwich, she added that she didn't "remember ordering" it. But after the rigor set in, she said, "I guess I ordered myself a sandwich."

The University of Southern California student has been  keeping fans updated with her vlogs  throughout her battle with brain cancer, noting this week she will be done with her chemotherapy treatments very soon.

"Tomorrow's really my last day of chemo," she said in a May 21 clip. "It's crazy and then it's my last cycle and then I'm done. It's insane."

And even though she knows there's a light at the end of the tunnel— and that the light is coming sooner than she expected —she can't help but feel nervous.

"That's the thing, I just wait around for the next time I get chemo and I'm kind of scared," she explained in her May 22 post-chemo update. "Once I'm done, how I'm gonna go back to normal life? ‘Cause I feel like there's always gonna be another treatment or something I have to do."

She added, "Otherwise, I'm doing good."

Brain Cancer Diagnosis

Isabella Strahan —the daughter of former couple Michael Strahan and Jean Muggli —said she "didn't notice anything was off" about her health until early October 2023, when she started experiencing headaches and nausea.

After throwing up blood one day, she got a full checkup and MRI scan at the urging of her dad. The results showed medulloblastoma, a malignant brain tumor found in children.

Later that month, she underwent brain surgery to remove the mass.

Family Support

Isabella went public with her diagnosis in a January 2024 interview with her dad and ABC News' Robin Roberts .

"I literally think that in a lot of ways, I'm the luckiest man in the world because I've got an amazing daughter," Michael noted at the time. "I know she's going through it, but I know that we're never given more than we can handle and that she is going to crush this."

Isabella's twin sister Sophia Strahan also offered her support. "I'm so lucky to have the most amazing sister and best friend in the world," she wrote on Instagram. "The last few months have been so much harder than we could have ever imagined, but it's made me realize just how strong you are"

Radiation Therapy

Following her interview, Isabella shared she had finished her round of radiation therapy .

"I'm very excited to finally be done," she said in a Jan. 16 YouTube video. "It's been a long six weeks and I'm very happy to finally heal my head after all of this because the side effects and everything get to you."

First Chemotherapy Round

Following radiation therapy, Isabella began undergoing chemotherapy to treat her cancer.

"My whole mouth feels like I got one giant root canal," she shared in a Feb. 16 vlog. "Every single tooth, just ripped out and not even surgically put back in. My jaw hurts, the bottom of my tongue hurts. It hurts when I gulp water." 

Still, the teen kept her spirits up , joking in a video posted a week later that her hair is "insufficient now."

"Besides being bald," she said, "it doesn't bring me pain mentally." 

Emergency Skull Surgery

Though Isabella was initially scheduled to undergo her second round of chemotherapy in early March, she underwent emergency surgery on her skull—during which doctors drained out extra fluid from her head and replaced a bone they had originally cut out with a titanium plate—which pushed her chemo back by weeks.

"I'm in so much pain," she said in a March 6 vlog. "My face is extremely puffy, and this sucks. I was in so much pain earlier. I was, like, screaming."

Special Visit

Isabella's dad Michael arranged for her favorite singer Bryson Tiller to stop by their New York City home as a pick-me-up amid her treatments.

"You haven't moved this much in months!" Michael joked to his daughter in her vlog of the visit. "You are fangirling right now."

Chemotherapy Round 2

Isabella shared in a March 21 video that she had started her second round of chemotherapy , meaning there was "just four more" rounds to go.

New Side Effects

Amid her second chemotherapy round, Isabella said she began experiencing difficulties in walking .

"I literally can't walk without being lightheaded or out of breath," she shared in a March 27 vlog, lamenting that there isn't an "anti-exhaustion medicine" she could take.

The YouTuber had a positive update after finishing her second round of chemotherapy , sharing that she would only have to undergo two more rounds of instead of the originally scheduled four.

"These are happy tears," she said in a video posted April 10. "It's not even considering crying when it's happy tears."

Roadblock in Her Journey

However, Isabella hit a bump in the road in her treatment plan when she had to undergo a third craniotomy . According to the teen, this procedure was unlike anything she had previously experienced.

"Not going to lie, I've been crying a lot," she detailed in an April 12 vlog. "They sunk a needle in three spots and drained fluid, and I was completely awake for this. So, my first completely awake surgery."

NEW MOVIES TO STREAM

— The spice will flow on Max starting Tuesday when Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” finally hits the streaming service. The film continues the saga of Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) as he learns the ways of the desert-dwelling Fremen following the death of his father in “Part One.” It’s also a decidedly more action-packed spectacle than the first film, introducing a slew of new characters including the demonic Feyd Rautha played with scene-stealing menace by Austin Butler. In his review, AP Film Writer Jake Coyle wrote that “Like its predecessor, ‘Dune: Part Two’ thrums with an intoxicating big-screen expressionism of monoliths and mosquitos, fevered visions and messianic fervor — more dystopian dream, or nightmare, than a straightforward narrative.”

— A different kind of eye-popping spectacle will also be available on Prime Video on Thursday in the documentary “The Blue Angels” about the daring U.S. Navy pilots who have thrilled air show audiences since 1946. Produced by J.J. Abrams and “Top Gun: Maverick” star Glen Powell, filmmaker Paul Crowder got unprecedented access to the pilots both on the ground and in the air to give audiences a front row seat to the show. They filmed the stunts using a helicopter with a mounted IMAX-certified camera – it was the first ever civilian aircraft that was allowed to fly in their performance airspace – and, unlike in “Top Gun: Maverick,” there was no staging or second takes.

— The ever-prolific Jennifer Lopez has another movie on the way already in the sci-fi action pic “Atlas,” debuting on Netflix on Friday, May 24. She plays the titular character, a data analyst who must learn to trust AI in order to save humanity, in a cast that includes Simu Liu, Sterling K. Brown and Mark Strong. — Lenny Kravitz is back with his first full-length album in six years: “Blue Electric Light.” (The album follows 2018’s “Raise Vibration.”) It is a testament to his status as one of the last remaining true rock stars, evident from the moment he released the album’s lead single, “TK421.” (The title may very well be a “Star Wars” reference, so it’s best not to harken on it too much — and instead watch the very “not safe for work” music video that partners the funky track’s release instead. Seriously, wait until you’re home.) Last year, Kravitz described the album as “the album I didn’t make in my teens” to the Associated Press.

— You’ve seen nearly all eight hours of Peter Jackson’s Beatles documentary “Get Back” on Disney+. Now, prepare yourself to watch a definitive documentary on America’s band, the Beach Boys, on the same platform starting Friday, May 24. (Let the spirited rivalry continue!) Appropriately titled “The Beach Boys,” this doc boasts of never-before-seen footage and all new interviews with members Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks and Bruce Johnston.

— At the epicenter of Memphis’ music scene in the ’50s and '60s was Stax Records, home to Otis Redding, Isaac Hayes, Booker T. & the M.G.’s, The Staple Singers, and many others; a funk, R&B and soul label that celebrated interracial creative endeavors at a point in American history when doing so was life-threatening. Now, there’s a documentary that works to chronicle the legacy of the institution: “Stax: Soulsville, U.S.A.” starting Monday on HBO Max.

— “The Tuba Thieves,” which will become available to stream on the PBS app on Monday, is not about stealing tubas. Well, at least, not completely: From 2011 through 2013, tubas started disappearing from high schools in Los Angeles. Filmmaker Alison O’Daniel, who identifies as deaf/hard of hearing, used these thefts as a jumping off point in her experimental work that attempts to understand the role of sound in our lives. That's music to anyone's ears.

— Argentine and Spanish singer Nathy Peluso will release her third album and first in four years, “Grasa,” following 2020’s Latin Grammy award winning “Calambre.” She co-wrote and co-produced most of the album with Manuel Lara (known for his work with Kali Uchis and Bad Bunny ), and it shows. The album is an eclectic exploration of a variety of genres: salsa, ballads, hip-hop, R&B and beyond. It’s also stacked with collaborations, including a delightfully surprising one from Dev Hynes’ Blood Orange on “El Dia Que Perdí Mi Juventud.”

NEW SHOWS TO STREAM

— A six-part series from Poland called “Murderesses” streams on Viaplay beginning Tuesday. It’s based on a true crime novel by Katarzyna Bonda, about a rookie cop investigating the disappearance of her father who has been missing for one year. Her digging uncovers family secrets.

— Has chef Gordon Ramsay met his match in season two of “Gordon Ramsay’s Food Stars?” He faces-off against fellow Brit, restaurateur and reality TV star Lisa Vanderpump to find fresh talent in the food and beverage industry. They each lead teams of contestants who compete in various challenges and the winner gets $250,000 toward their brand. It’s like “Shark Tank” meets “The Voice” meets “The Apprentice.” Season two debuts Wednesday on Fox. The series also streams on Hulu, Tubi and Fox.com.

— Shay Mitchell, best-known from the original “Pretty Little Liars” series is serious about her love of travel. Mitchell hosts her own travel show on Max but with a twist. “Thirst with Shay Mitchell” is all about seeking out beverages unique to each area, soaking up local culture. Mitchell is game to try it all one sip at a time.

— Season four of “The Ms. Pat Show” comes to BET+ on Thursday. It stars comedian Patricia “Pat” Williams, known in showbiz as Ms. Patt, who draws from her life experience as a suburban mom who grew up in a rough neighborhood and has a history of drug-dealing. Jordan E. Cooper created the series with Ms. Pat and is also its showrunner. He wrote and starred in the play “Ain’t No Mo,'” which made him the youngest Black American playwright in Broadway history.

— “South Park” has never shied away from poking fun of hot-button topics. In a new special, weight loss drugs are all the rage in South Park. The kids get involved when Cartman is denied access. “South Park: The End of Obesity″ streams on Paramount+ on Friday, May 24.

— For a more family friendly animated option, “My Adventures with Superman” is back for a season two on Saturday, May 25 on Adult Swim. Jack Quaid voices Clark Kent/Superman as a young man who is roommates with his best friend, Jimmy Olson, played by Ishmel Sahid. Alice Lee voices Lois Lane. The lighthearted take on the DC Comics hero also streams on Max.

NEW VIDEO GAMES TO PLAY

— Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice rattled unsuspecting gamers in 2017 with a story in which the scariest monsters may or may not have sprung from the protagonist’s own psychosis. Things haven’t gotten much easier for her as Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II begins — it’s not like mental health care was a high priority among the Vikings in 10th century Iceland. Still, Senua is determined to rescue “those who have fallen victim to the horrors of tyranny,” though the question remains: Can she do it without losing her mind? British developer Ninja Theory is promising a “brutal” follow-up to one of the most haunting and nerve-racking games in history, so consider yourself warned. The trials resume Tuesday on Xbox X/S and PC.

— Paper Trail also follows a young woman trying to make her way in the world, but it’s a much less stressful journey. Paige lives in a comfy home with loving parents, but it’s time to go to college. The road isn’t always straightforward, but Paige has a special talent: She can treat her environment like paper, folding it in order to reconnect broken pathways. The result, from British studio Newfangled Games, is a series of colorful, 2D mazes with charming graphics that look like they were handcrafted. Turn the Paige on Tuesday on PlayStation 5/4, Xbox X/S/One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, Android and PC.
