Virgin Atlantic to launch IATA Travel Pass and TrustAssure TM trials to accelerate digital health integration

  • Leading International Air Transport Association (IATA) Travel Pass smartphone app to be trialled on Virgin Atlantic UK-Barbados services from 16 April. Virgin Atlantic will be the first UK airline to conduct a live trial of IATA Travel Pass.
  • Innovative TrustAssure TM solution available for customers travelling to US destinations from 29 March, offering quick, automated A.I. test verification
  • Secure digital health technology supports a smooth and streamlined experience, navigating global travel requirements from the palm of customers’ hands
  • Rapid, affordable testing and effective digital proof of Covid-19 credentials, including vaccinations, must be part of HMG’s Global Travel Taskforce’s risk-based approach to reopen skies.

Virgin Atlantic has taken a major step forward towards the introduction of digital health passes by partnering with IATA Travel Pass and TrustAssure TM to launch two separate, complementary trials to streamline customer journeys.

From 16 April the airline will commence a one-month trial of the IATA Travel Pass on its popular London Heathrow-Barbados services, in close collaboration with the Government of Barbados, which will accept the Pass at its border. Customers travelling for permitted reasons on flights VS131 from London Heathrow to Barbados will be invited to participate in the trial by downloading the IATA Travel Pass on their smartphone. Using the app they can create a digital ID comprising their profile photo and passport information and upload their Covid-19 credentials, selecting relevant flight information.

The IATA Travel Pass is at the forefront of digital health pass solutions being developed, allowing customers to verify that they meet the health criteria needed to travel between certain countries, with evidence of a negative Covid-19 test. Future versions of the app will also incorporate vaccine records. The free app is currently being considered by governments around the world to support the restart of international travel at scale and Virgin Atlantic will seek approval from the UK Government to expand the trial, to accommodate customers arriving at the UK border on Barbados-Heathrow flights.

In further progress towards end-to-end digital health integration, from 29 March, customers travelling to Virgin Atlantic’s US destinations will be able to verify Covid-19 test results digitally, utilising TrustAssure’s robust artificial intelligence (A.I.)-based solution. Each customer’s pre-departure test documentation can be securely uploaded via its mobile-optimised website, in advance of their flight, and validated using A.I., in less than two minutes. The technology has already proven extremely effective in development and trials by Virgin Atlantic’s Joint Venture partner, Delta Air Lines . Once confirmed, customers receive a QR code with a green verification, meaning they can proceed quickly through Check In.

Corneel Koster, Chief Customer & Operating Officer, Virgin Atlantic, said:

“In parallel to the UK’s successful vaccination programme and accompanied by a risk-based, phased easing of restrictions, we can see a flightpath to soon allow the safe restart of international travel at scale, in time for summer. When the skies reopen; rapid, affordable testing combined with digital health integration will be vital to streamline and simplify the customer experience, make border health checks manageable and build consumer confidence. Governments, industry and technology companies need to work together to lead the adoption of digital solutions with global common standards that are accepted at borders.”

“Our Barbados trial with IATA Travel Pass is an exciting step towards a ‘digital health pass’ as we actively explore secure solutions to integrate testing, vaccination, health documents and locator forms into our customer journeys. Building on the success of the development by our partners Delta and TrustAssure and in line with our innovative spirit, we are also proud to join a partnership with CLX Health to deliver industry-leading A.I.-powered test verification for US-bound customers.”

The Hon. Senator Lisa Cummins, Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, said:

“Safe travel is integral to Barbados’ full return to tourism, and we welcome this progressive step which complements our already implemented public health protocols and programmes. Barbados travel protocols have included a negative Covid-19 test since last year, and we are currently leading the Caribbean in an aggressive inoculation programme which has seen nearly 30% of our adult population vaccinated to date."

“The IATA Travel Pass lends an extra element of safety to both our visitors and Barbadians, giving them the confidence that we are engaging in and promoting travel that protects us all. As we look ahead to the next few months, our intention is to create a new-look tourism industry that holistically reflects the new public health imperatives.”

IATA Travel Pass is a global interoperable solution based on open-source standards, which means it can be used as a stand-alone solution or integrated into airlines’ own apps to provide passengers with a seamless travel experience.

Interoperable, connected mobile solutions that enable digital proof of test status and vaccine status and completed health or passenger locator forms will be essential to globally meet dynamically changing, route-specific travel restrictions.

Nick Careen, IATA’s Senior Vice President Airport, Passenger, Cargo, Security said:

“Our priority is getting international flights back in the air, to support the thousands of people that work in aviation and its related industries, such as tourism. Health passes are the key to doing this safely. We are proud to partner with Virgin Atlantic and the Government of Barbados to trial IATA Travel Pass and demonstrate that this technology can securely, conveniently and efficiently help manage passenger travel health credentials."

“This trial comes at a critical time for the UK Government as it looks to map out a pathway to restart international aviation at scale though it's Global Travel Task Force. We look forward to working with Virgin Atlantic and the UK Government to pilot acceptance of Travel Pass at the UK Border and for the UK to be a global pioneer of this type of technology.”

The TrustAssure solution offers a simple traffic light validation system to support a swift, safe and seamless airport experience. A green response indicates the results are verified and a red result indicates there is further verification needed from Check In staff or that the test certification is not valid, for example if the test is not to the correct specification or taken outside the three-day window. Verification technology is supported by the TrustAssure Covid-19 Testing Labs Locator, which lets customers find convenient providers and filter results by destination before they travel.

Heather Field, Managing Partner AI Practice, TrustAssure, said:

“Assisting travellers in getting back to the skies has been at the forefront of our technology initiatives, and we are proud to be partnering with Virgin Atlantic. The first mile is helping passengers meet their destination requirements through our partnership with providers and test locations across the globe."

“The TrustAssure A.I.-powered, test verification solution provides a streamlined, pre-boarding process for both travellers and airline agents, going the last mile to ensure safe travel for everyone.”

Recognising the importance to consumers that their personal health data is protected, both IATA Travel Pass and TrustAssure give users full control over how their personal information is shared, as the data is stored locally on their phone and not in any central database.

With Covid-19 pre-departure testing requirements for international travel set to remain in place for now, in parallel to global vaccine distribution, the digital health technology gives clarity to customers and removes the guesswork to travel.

Notes to editors

  • The UK Government’s Global Travel Taskforce will report on 12 April with recommendations to facilitate a return to international travel by 17 May at the earliest, using a risk-based approach. The government has confirmed that digital health solutions are being considered and Virgin Atlantic urges their inclusion in the restart framework, with a clear path to implementation and acceptance at the UK border.
  • Virgin Atlantic is currently operating passenger services for essential trips between London Heathrow and New York-JFK, Los Angeles, Miami, Boston and Atlanta.
  • The United States currently requires all international arrivals by air to have evidence of a negative PCR, LAMP or Antigen Covid-19 test taken within three days before departure.
  • Virgin Atlantic currently operates a twice-weekly Barbados service for essential trips, including repatriating citizens and Barbadian nationals returning home. The Caribbean country currently requires all arrivals from the UK to present a negative PCR test taken within 3 days of departure followed by a second PCR test following 5 days of quarantine in approved accommodation.

Virgin Voyages Status Match Promotion Is Too Good To Pass Up

W e are HUGE fans of Virgin Voyages, they are the industry disruptor that is so far ahead in many ways that the legacy cruise lines simply don't understand why folks like myself are willing to spend more money for a more seamless, fun experience that is something different than just being "more luxury". Today they have unvield one of their best promotions yet - a status match that works not just with other cruise lines but also hotel and airline partners too. For instance, for me as a Hilton Diamond and Mariott Bonvoy Platinum member I can now gain access to perks including free speciality coffee, laundry service, etc.

This program appears to be limited to matching with their second-level loyalty program, Blue Extras, but that comes with some great benefits normally reserved for guests embarking on their 3rd voyage. This includes one Specialty Coffee per day, access to an exclusive cocktail event, 1 bag of free laundry, and some other fun perks, too.

There is also a 3rd level, Deep Blue Extras, that includes 2 Specialty Coffees, a $100 Bar Tab Credit, Unlimited Premium Wifi (all sailors get standard free wifi), Priority Boarding and 2 pressed items, 1 specialty item cleaned, and 1 bag of laundry service. However, that does not appear to be eligible for this status match.

Applicable Loyalty Programs

The list of applicable loyalty programs for the Virgin Voyages status match is pretty impressive and includes the following hotel and airline loyalty programs ...

  • United MileagePlus
  • American Airlines AAdvantage
  • Delta SkyMiles
  • Southwest Rapid Rewards
  • Frontier Miles
  • JetBlue TrueBlue
  • Marriott Bonvoy
  • Hilton Honors
  • World of Hyatt
  • Choice Privileges
  • IHG One Rewards
  • Wyndham Rewards
  • Radisson Rewards
  • Best Western Rewards

How To Get Your Virgin Voyages Status Match

You probably thought that there was going to be a catch for a program this good ... and there is (sorry!) ...

The Virgin Voyages status match offer will run today (April 24) through Friday, April 26. Virgin Voyages will open up its Sailing Club Status Match to honor other airline and hotel loyalty programs. Travel loyalists part of Marriott Bonvoy, American Airlines AAdvantage, Delta SkyMiles, and Hilton Honors (among many others) will gain access to Virgin Voyages' "Blue Extras," with things like one free bag of laundry, specialty coffee, access to an exclusive cocktail event and more.

Typically this Status Match program only applies to other cruise loyalty programs such as Carnival's VFIP and Royal Caribbean's Crown and Anchor Society, but now, avid travelers can jump the line and get some perks that they would normally have to earn by sailing at least three cruises to get.

Contact Your Travel Advisor To Book Your Cruise

To take advantage of this, contact your travel advisor - We recommend calling: Heather Hills: 630-779-9302 so she can help you with full details.

Virgin Atlantic to trial digital health passes

Virgin Atlantic is launching two trials to pave the way for the introduction of digital health passes. Partnering with IATA Travel Pass and TrustAssure, the airline will run two separate, complimentary trials to streamline customers’ journeys.

On 16 April, Virgin Atlantic will start a one-month trial of the IATA Travel Pass on its popular London Heathrow to Barbados services. The airline will work closely with the Barbados government, which will accept the pass at its border. The IATA Travel Pass is at the forefront of digital health pass solutions being developed to allow travellers to confirm that they meet the necessary health criteria for travel. Currently, the app will hold information on recent COVID-19 tests to confirm a traveller’s negative status. In the future, it will also store vaccine records. Virgin Atlantic will be the first UK airline to conduct a live trial of IATA Travel Pass.

Virgin Atlantic is also working with TrustAssure to trial a similar system for customers travelling to the US. From 29 March, travellers will be able to verify COVID-19 test results digitally, utilising TrustAssure’s robust artificial intelligence-based solution. Each customer’s pre-departure test documents can be securely uploaded via TrustAssure’s mobile-optimised website before their flight and validated using AI in less than two minutes. Rapid COVID-19 tests for air travellers are as effective as a 10-day quarantine at reducing imported cases of COVID-19, according to new research by Edge Health and Oxera . The study was commissioned by an industry consortium led by Virgin Atlantic.

Work from sea: Virgin Voyages brings remote friendly summer season pass to second ship

virgin u.s. travel pass

Virgin Voyages is doubling down on its remote work-friendly season pass.

The adults-only cruise line is offering the Summer Season Pass on its Resilient Lady ship, which sails from Athens, Greece. This follows high demand after revealing the offer for Scarlet Lady earlier this month.

Passholders can take back-to-back cruises at a cheaper cost.

“No longer does working from home mean being tied to a desk or home office and eating leftovers for lunch,” Virgin Voyages CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu previously said in a news release when the first pass was launched. “With our latest WiFi upgrades, Virgin Voyages can now offer our Sailors the chance to see the world while working from a daybed at The Dock (outdoor lounge) and sampling Mediterranean mezzes, then hopping off the ship in between calls to make the most of our incredible ports of call.”

What are the terms of Virgin’s Summer Season Pass?

The passes for Resilient Lady are available in three stints of four cruises each:

  • June 30-July 28
  • July 7-Aug. 4

Destinations include the islands of Santorini and Mykonos, Dubrovnik, Croatia, Bodrum in Turkey, and Kotor, Montenegro, though exact itineraries vary by sailing.

How much does Virgin’s Summer Season Pass cost?

The pass starts at $9,990 for up to two guests, a savings of roughly 30% compared to booking four sailings separately. Passholders will stay in a Central Sea Terrace cabin with a private balcony.

They will also get complimentary wash and fold laundry service, access to Richard’s Rooftop – usually reserved for suite guests – a $10 daily coffee credit per cabin and more.

Can I work from a cruise ship?: We gave it a try

Premium Wi-Fi will be provided at no extra cost, handy for those who need to get work done on board. If you do, Virgin recommends posting up at the “in-cabin desk, your hammock, or in the Grounds Club” coffee bar, according to an FAQ section on its website.

Travelers can fill out an online form to book.

Do You Need a Passport to Go to the U.S. Virgin Islands?

virgin u.s. travel pass

Pola Damonte / Getty Images

The USVI (U.S. Virgin Islands) are a U.S. territory, so U.S. citizens do not need a passport to visit, and this applies to every island in the territory ( St. Thomas , St. John, and St. Croix.)

Traveling to a U.S. territory from your home in the United States is exactly the same as driving from Portland to Seattle, or flying from New York City to Boston. As it's a U.S. territory, it's the United States, so you don't need a passport to enter. It's worth noting that while you're within the U.S. Virgin Islands, you're still within the United States' legal jurisdiction.

What Identification Is Needed in Order to Visit?

While you don't need a passport, you do require a form of identification, and you may wish to have a birth certificate to prove citizenship, as well. The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol says the following about documentation needed for travel to and from the U.S. Virgin Islands:

"Although U.S. citizens are not required to present a passport upon departure from the U.S. territories, travelers are encouraged to travel with a passport or other proof of citizenship, as they will be asked questions about citizenship and any goods they will be bringing to the U.S. mainland upon their departure from U.S. territories."

You don't need to apply for a passport in order to visit the U.S. Virgin Islands, but it's probably easiest to take yours if you do have one. If not, take your driving license (and/or your birth certificate if you wish), and you'll be all good to go.

Are There Any Exceptions?

Be careful with flight routings. If you're not going to be traveling with a passport, make sure that you buy a direct flight to the U.S. Virgin Islands or one that only passes through the U.S. or U.S. territories on a layover. If you were to buy a flight with a stopover in say, Costa Rica , you'll need to have your passport, as this would count as traveling internationally. In this case, you wouldn't be allowed to board the plane if you couldn't show your passport.

Likewise, on your way home, if you were to book a flight that would stop over in Bermuda or Mexico (or any other international country), you would need to have a passport in order to board that flight.

Who Needs a Passport to Visit the U.S. Virgin Islands?

If you're from outside of the U.S., you'll want to make sure you've applied for a U.S. visa or ESTA before you book your flights. Keep in mind that you may have to also show an onward ticket (not a return ticket) to prove that you won't be staying in the country for longer than you are permitted.

What Else Is a U.S. Territory?

You may be surprised to discover that there are many U.S. territories throughout the world, however, you will require a passport to visit some of them as a U.S. citizen.

The five major U.S. territories include: Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the North Mariana Islands

Locking your check in bags

You should always make sure your bags are securely locked before checking them in. The TSA recommends you leave your bags unlocked to make them easier to search, but we disagree with this policy.

You can buy special TSA-approved locks, which can be opened by security officials with a master key. The locks can be bought from luggage shops at most airports.

Please be aware that the TSA has the right to break into your locked baggage, which can cause damage if you're not using the TSA-approved locks.

Loss or damage of items during TSA screening

If there is any damage or loss of items incurred during the TSA’s screening process you should make a claim on your insurance.

You can also contact the TSA Consumer Response Centre on 1-866-289-9673, where your case will be assessed on an individual basis. Further information is available on the TSA website at www.tsa.gov .

Baggage security screening in the US

This section tells you about US passenger security screening, and what to do if you've experienced difficulties when flying to or from the US in the past.

In order to ensure security on flights into the US, the US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) screens passenger information for all travellers entering the country.

When you give us your Advance Passenger Information (API) for a flight to the US, your full name, date of birth and gender will be supplied to the TSA for watch-list screening. Find out more about this process on the TSA website .

How to make an enquiry when you have API problems with flying to and from the US

If you've experienced difficulties when flying to or from the US in the past, it may be the case you share the name of someone on the US government’s ‘no fly list’, or there may be another issue with your records.

If this is the case you can apply for a ‘redress number’ from the Department of Homeland Security’s Traveller Redress Inquiry Program (DHS TRIP). This number may help prevent problems in the future.

Contact us  to add your redress number to future bookings with us, so we'll have it as part of your Advance Passenger Information.

TSA pre-check

This section explains what TSA Pre✓ and Global Entry are, who is eligible to use them, and how they can apply.

The US Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has developed a pre-screening process called TSA Pre✓. This allows qualifying travellers, including Virgin Atlantic passengers, to enjoy faster security screening and use dedicated TSA Pre✓ lanes at participating US airports.

With TSA Pre✓, you don't need to remove shoes, light jackets or belts when you go through security. Compliant liquids and laptops can stay in your hand luggage as well.

UK nationals can use TSA Pre✓ by joining the Global Entry programme , which also allows a faster entry through US immigration on arrival.

Who can use TSA Pre✓ at the airport?

Membership of the TSA Pre✓ programme itself is to US citizens and lawful permanent residents.

Citizens of other countries, including the UK, can join the Global Entry programme , which allows use of the TSA Pre✓ lanes at the airport.

The Global Entry programme, for non-US citizens

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection 'Trusted Traveler' programme for non-US citizens, including UK passport holders. It helps you get through customs and immigration more quickly when you arrive in the US at certain airports , by using automated kiosks.

You will also be able to use the faster TSA Pre✓ security lanes, if they are in operation at your airport.

To join Global Entry, you will need to apply and undergo a background check and interview. There is a non-refundable application fee, currently $100.

Applying for TSA Pre✓ and the Global Entry programme

The application process for TSA Pre✓ or Global Entry involves a background check by the TSA. This includes taking your fingerprints and verifying your identity to check your criminal history, legal status, and other intelligence-related information.

You will also need to have an in-person interview at a US airport. We recommend you sign up for an interview ahead of time, so you can meet with a TSA official when you're next in a participating US airport.

Apply for TSA Pre✓

(US citizens and lawful permanent residents only)

Apply for Global Entry

(For citizens of other countries, including the UK)

How to use TSA Pre✓ or Global Entry

Once your application for TSA Pre✓ or Global Entry has been approved, you'll be issued with a Known Traveler Number (KTN).

You should add this number to your booking, via My booking , at least 72 hours before you fly. A TSA Pre✓ symbol should appear on your boarding pass, and you'll be allowed to enter the faster security lanes at the airport.

virgin u.s. travel pass

If you have a connecting flight on another airline, including our partner Delta Air Lines, you'll also need to add your Known Traveller Number (KTN) to your booking with them.

Global Entry members arriving in the US enter dedicated kiosks, scan their passport or U.S. permanent resident card, have their fingerprints checked and complete a customs declaration. They can then get their bags and leave the airport.

Additional information

The TSA authorises passengers for expedited screening, not Virgin Atlantic. Random and unpredictable security measures are incorporated throughout US airports, and no passengers are guaranteed expedited screening.

Not all US airports currently offer TSA Pre✓ , including some that Virgin Atlantic fly from.

Children aged 12 and under can accompany an eligible traveller through TSA Pre✓.
