Review Summary

What do you think about this product?

October 7, 2023

From Spain to Skokie’s to Nepal to Skaha bluffs

Bought this so I could use as carry on with daypack separated. No issues to Europe or Asia also used as an outdoor climbing bag for gear. Great bag as straps hide. My only suggestion would be for a waist strap for daypack but I just bought one and added clips.

Great value

nothing is perfect but so far I can't complain about the 60L backpack. Gave it a test run while hiking and its comfortable and pretty handy. Would recommend it hands on

First Impression

Have yet to put this item to use, but plan on taking it on our upcoming trip to Iceland next month. I have already packed most of what I will be needing. Between my carryon suitcase and this back pack, I have more than enough packing space! My favorite feature is the day bag that attaches to the front of the main back pack. This will be perfect for day hikes to store water and lunches in without having to carry the full backpack and add the extra unnecessary weight. Material seems to be durable and water resistant, which is exactly what I need for the type of traveling I will be doing.

Superior Design and Quality

Every centimeter of the Thule Landmark backpack is designed and crafted with intelligent thoroughness. All the people who brought this product idea to fruition deserves an instant bonus and/or promotion. There is no backpack I’ve owned that is as exceptional as this product. The first brilliant innovation, the dual-pack system which can attach to both back and front, is not only aesthetically awesome, but also very useful for times I don’t need to carry many things with me. I love every aspect of the design. It is obvious upon the first few moments of examining the bag that a lot of effort went into this product, and the quality speaks for itself. The zipper locks, the hardtop case for electronics and sunglasses, the backpack strap pockets which buckles tuck into, the quality of materials, and the way in which everything seamlessly fits together is amazing to me. I’ve owned Osprey and Eagle Creek bags (which are not companies to scoff at), but Thule really outdid themselves with this product design. I am very satisfied with my purchase, and look forward to everything else they have in store for the future. Please keep up the phenomenal work!! Merry Christmas and may God bless your team.

Awesome Warranty!!

I researched bags for our upcoming Europe trip for quite some time and Thule was always my top pick. I bought 5 of these bags for a bucket list trip to Europe for my family. When I received my order, one of the zippers on the small pack was broke. I sent a warranty request in. They ended up sending me a complete set, the 40L and the 20L. AWESOME!! So happy with my purchase and can't wait to use them in the UK and France over Xmas 2022. Thank you so much again Thule!!

Great for travel.

Perfect size and very accommodating for traveling abroad. With all the pockets and zipper tie downs, all the strap stow aways. I was able to feel comfortable and safe traveling with money passports and visas through Vietnam and South Korea

3 months in South America revealed shortcomings

I traveled for 3 months with this backpack. Good parts: - It has a nice muted style without too many straps hanging around, if that's important to you (it was to me). - It's roomy. I was able to pack for hot & cold weather, for hiking and going out in cities. - Never a problem bringing the 40L on a flight as a carry-on, even when a gate agent would ask to inspect it beforehand. Shortcomings I found: - The "CashStash" compartment inside the 40L is where you're supposed to fit things like your passport and your emergency money. It's impossible to get to and slide your hand into once your bag is packed. I ended up using the "CashStash" of the 20L exclusively, as it is accessible from the outside of the bag (this only works if your 20L isn't packed inside your 40L). - When laid horizontally on the ground, the part of the 40L that touches the floor is the same one that you wear on your back. Unlike the Osprey Farpoint, there is no cover you can zip up over the shoulder straps when not in use/as a floor protection. Now imagine wanting to change clothes in an airport bathroom stall when the floor tiles are a little bit wet... - A feature is the ability to tuck away the shoulder straps & hip belts when not in use. This is too challenging to do when the bag is packed, as you're trying to jam the straps between two compressed layers of bag material. It's also difficult to fold/tuck the left & right sides in the same manner, leading to uneven "bumps" in the bag surface (uncomfortable when worn). I ended up keeping the straps loose for 3 months as a result. - The main bag has an externally-accessible side pocket that Thule claims can hold a water bottle. The problem is that the pocket digs into the bag's contents, and if the bag is anywhere near full, the pocket can't "dig" and you can't use it. - The chest straps can't be attached securely to the shoulder straps (a very baffling design choice). Reviews had mentioned this- I naively thought I would simply pay extra attention to not losing them. Yet I did... on my second day traveling. As the backpack combo comes with 2 pairs (one for each backpack), I ended up stuffing away the remaining pair and only took it out when necessary (annoying). - The 20L lacks ways to organize your stuff inside of it. There's a laptop pouch, and that's it. Anything you put in there like clothes, cables, battery bank, etc. will get jumbled up. - The 20L backpanel isn't breathable at all. Expect to be soaked everywhere the bag makes contact with your body from the lightest 10-min walk. - The "SafeZone" compartment where you're supposed to stash your sunglasses and other fragile items isn't all that strong. I don't know exactly how it broke, but through the course of being handled by myself and bus operators, the top part became soft/not protective anymore. It feels like what happens when you fold a piece of cardboard and then try to straighten it out. - This isn't an advertised feature of the combo, but in case you are wondering like I was prior to purchasing, they are absolutely not waterproof. I quickly learned having to line backpack contents in plastic bags. - Last but not least, the material or construction quality doesn't seem high. See pictures taken on my 5th week traveling.

Double Trouble

I just got this backpack and I think it's the best travel backpack I have ever owned. It is ergonomic and best of all, it has so many compartments literally for anything. I personally like the safety features and the fact that it has an extra backpack. I leave the big one at the hostel and carry the small one when I go sightseeing. I was expecting a darker green color but it still looks good though. Best backpack on a backpack.

The greatest backpack

Traveling I use it which allows no luggage charges

Awesome bag!

A really great bag for travel, keeps things very organized with all of the different compartments. I really like the feature around the bag being able to be used for day trips, versatility is key. Would highly recommend.

THULE Landmark 60 Backpack Review

Geoff

Pangolins with Packs

Good backpacks for one-bag travel are difficult to find. It’s difficult to find something that is large enough to hold everything you’d need on a trip or as a nomad, but also comfortable and versatile enough to use as a daypack to explore the local markets or nearby cities. As a response, many companies have started designing 2-in-1 style travel backpacks as a solution. Is it technically still one-bag travel if there are actually 2 backpacks that can be combined together? That’s up to you to decide. I love debating semantics as much as the next person, but I’m just here to review the backpacks.

Last year, we reviewed the Osprey Ozone Duplex 65, which is also a 2-in-1 travel backpack with a large duffel bag that can be attached to a smaller, separate daypack. We had mixed reactions. It was great from the perspective of being able to carry all your stuff in one bag and on your shoulders, but the inconvenience of the design was too much for me — you had to unbuckle part of the smaller bag every time you wanted to get something out of it, be it a laptop, book, or anything else. The THULE (pronounced too-lee , I think?) Landmark 60 is a good competitor pack for the Osprey Ozone Duplex 65. It is similarly a 2-in-1 travel backpack with a large bag that acts as the main luggage compartment and a smaller daypack.

Does it stand out above the Osprey counterpart? Does it work well for the 1-bag lifestyle (or pseudo 1-bag in this case)? Read on to find out.

2-in-1 System

The THULE Landmark has two backpacks. One is a large 40-L travel bag and the other a 20-L daypack. The daypack connects onto the front face of the travel bag through 4 buckles (one at each corner of the front face). This makes it a great bag for the vacation adventures but also the digital nomad lifestyle.

One cool feature that sets the Landmark apart from other 2-in-1 travel packs is the ability to remove the daypack and attach it to your front (i.e., attaching it to the shoulder straps of the travel bag.) This makes the weight feel a lot more balanced which is also better for your back. It does look a little dorky, but I’m sure we’ve all done similar things before.

Main Compartments

  • Main compartment — Let’s start with the travel bag. This backpack largely resembles a duffel bag in that there is one large compartment with a U-shaped zipped lid that is also the front face of the bag. This compartment also has 2 internal compression straps to help keep your clothes or giant sacks of M&Ms in place. You may not think much of it, but that’s super helpful for large backpacks. That way, once you stand the bag upright, all your clothes don’t just plop down to the bottom of the bag. This large cavity can hold a medium packing cube (15" x 9" x 3" in the picture below) with a ton of extra space or a large packing cube (18" x 14" x 3" in the picture below) with some extra space. And as long as you don’t overpack them, you can actually fit both the large and the medium packing cubes inside.
  • Internal pockets — On the inside of the flap that covers the main compartment is a mesh, zipped pouch that is useful for keeping small things separated from the rest of the bag, like cables or toiletries. That way they don’t get lost in the abyss of the large main compartment.
  • Ultra secret pocket — I only call it this because it’s very well concealed. At the top of the main compartment is a small and hidden zipped pocket that is a great place for storing valuables or important documents, like a passport. The zipper is concealed under a flap and I actually didn’t even notice it while playing around with the bag until I watched the video on Thule’s website. I wouldn’t put anything too deep into this pocket as it’s very difficult to reach inside because the wall of the main compartment is in the way.
  • Water bottle pocket — The travel bag has a concealed water bottle pocket on the left side. It’s reveal through a zipped pouch and can fit fairly large bottles like a 1-L Nalgene, but it doesn’t have it’s own volume, so it will take away space from the inside of the main compartment.
  • Top lid — The top of the travel bag has a small quick access pocket for small items like electronics and keys. The top of this pocket is a lid and is, for some reason, a hard shell. I’m not quite sure what the intention was but, at the very least, it provides some protection for the contents of the lid. Inside the lid are 2 mesh pockets. One is a zipped pocket on the top of the bag with a couple partitions to help keep things organized. The other is on the underside of the lid that isn’t zipped but has multiple layers of mesh so items don’t fall out. One really nice design touch is the nylon webbing in the lid. It keeps the lid from opening more than 90 degrees and is stitched in a way that makes the webbing always fold inward (it’s two pieces of nylon webbing stitched together in the middle). This way the webbing never gets caught in the zippers. It’s a nice-to-have, though I feel like they could just do away with those ties altogether.

While this lid is great as a quick access pocket, the orientation seems upside down to me. The main compartment requires you to lay the bag flat on its back to open. However, if you open the lid while the bag is on its back everything inside the lid compartment that isn’t secured down by the lid’s interior pockets will spill out. In order for the orientation of the lid’s zippers to make sense, you can only open it when standing the travel bag upright. I know that if the lid were flipped around, you’d have to open it more than 90 degrees — because the whole top pouch is angled downward a bit — but I see no reason why that would be a problem.

The daypack is a great component that allows you to be on the go without carrying all your belongings with you.

  • Laptop sleeve — The main compartment features a laptop sleeve with some nice fleece lining and padding and fits at 15" MacBook.
  • Internal organization — Adjacent to the laptop sleeve is a zipped internal pocket that is about 7" x 9". Perfect for small items like pens, wallet, keys, more packs of M&Ms, etc.
  • Secret pocket — The daypack also has a secret pocket embedded into the back panel. It’s a good place to store a thin wallet, some cash, or a passport. Just keep in mind that since this pocket lies against your back, you’ll have to put flat items in it. Bulky items will poke into your back.
  • Water bottle holders — Last but not least, there are not one, but TWO water bottle holders, meaning three water bottle pockets in the whole Landmark system. The day pack’s bottle holders are HUUUGE and elastic, easily fitting a 1-L Nalgene bottle. BUT they will also take away volume from the daypack’s main compartment.

Additional Features

  • Locking clips — Both the travel bag and the daypack have “LoopLocks” to deter theft. They’re just hooks where you can hook the zipper pulls. They’re certainly not theft proof, so you may want to add a small lock, but they should be enough to deter a random thief.
  • Stowable straps and hip belt — The shoulder straps on the daypack can be detached and stowed behind the back panel’s padding. The hip belt can also be stored behind the padding. This leaves a very clean look for the bag, but note that the only way to carry it at that point is through either of the grab handles. It’d be great if they included a shoulder strap to essentially convert the travel bag into a duffel bag (just another nice option on how to carry the bag).
  • Grab handles — The travel bag has 2 robust grab handles that have ample padding and feel great. One is at the top and the other is on the right side of the bag. The handle at top of the daypack is a nylon webbing-based grab handle.
  • Sternum straps — Both backpacks have adjustable sternum straps. The sternum straps are on a daisy-chain-like ladder system.
  • Removable whistle — One of the sternum strap’s buckles has a whistle, but you can detach the whistle from one bag’s sternum strap and put it onto the other bag’s. This seems a bit unnecessary. Why not just put a whistle on both? Seems like more trouble to make a whistle that is removable.
  • External compression straps — the straps that are used to join the bags together can also act as compression straps when the daypack isn’t attached. There are extra buckles hidden in the lid of the main compartment that you can connect the compression straps to.

Construction

Overall, the construction of the Landmark feels decent. The bags have a combined weight of 4.05 lbs , which may sound like a lot but considering it is actually 2 bags, 4.05 lbs isn’t bad. The daypack is about 18" by 12" in size , and the travel bag is about 20.5" by 13" .

The Landmark 60 is 420 D polyester in some places and 600 D polyester in others. Certain areas of the bag definitely feel like the fabric is a bit thin. While it’s okay for normal backpacks, I expected a travel bag, which needs to be able to carry a lot of stuff, to have a bit more premium materials. Admittedly, 420–600 D polyester is probably just fine unless you’re just carrying heavy things with sharp corners, like textbooks. Additional padding or reinforcement in the materials would have been a good addition to the bottom of the bags. There is also no additional coating to waterproof the bag that I could tell.

All the zippers are YKK brand and the plastic buckles feel durable too. The stitching at all connection points of the shoulder straps, i.e., where the shoulder straps are attached to the webbing and to the backpack, all have a bit of reinforced stitching, but not with an x box stitch. An x box stitch would have been more reassuring, especially since this is a travel bag and intended to carry more weight than most backpacks.

Comfort and Travel Experience

While the Landmark 60 has been a great bag in terms of packing and flexibility, there could be some slight improvements on comfort. The shoulder straps are contoured on both bags. The travel bag has some solid closed-cell padding so there is structural support. The daypack has a small layer of open-cell padding , so it’s soft and lacks support. Both bags also have padding on the back panels. The daypack has a ridge foam padding covered with mesh and a very shallow airflow column going down the middle. The mesh going over the ridges in the padding allow some airflow in the troughs of the ridges, which is a nice touch. The travel bag uses a closed-cell foam for the back padding and similarly has a shallow airflow column down the middle. No mesh though. This design makes sense to me — stiffer foam for the larger, heavier bag. Soft foam with mesh for the smaller, lighter bag.

My gripe, however, is that the travel bag’s shoulder straps are too close together for such a large bag . They’re 2" apart on both the daypack and the travel bag. This isn’t a big deal for the daypack but on the travel bag, which is always heavier when packed, they start to pinch my neck and my armpits. Just having them a tiny bit wider apart would relieve the pressure. People who aren’t as fat as me may not have this issue, but just to contrast — the Aer Tech pack’s shoulder straps are 2.5" apart and the Evergoods CPL24’s are about 4" apart, and both of these are EDC bags that aren’t intended to carry as much weight as the Landmark.

In terms of life integration, the Landmark is not hard to use, but also not the easiest. There are extra buckles everywhere for the various carrying options which means you’ll need to learn how to attach and detach the bags together and where the right buckles are. Fortunately, all the buckles that serve different purposes are different sizes, so if the buckles don’t fit together, you know you’ve grabbed the wrong one.

Lastly, when you’re traveling and have both backpacks attached to each other, the whole thing can be pretty heavy and wide (as in you need to be careful walking around tight spaces or in stores). It also moves your center of gravity as you wear the bags further back than normal. It’s like you’re wearing a house on your back.

Overall, a solid travel bag. I definitely prefer the Thule Landmark 60 over the Osprey Ozone Duplex 65. It has a few places where I would change the design but still great carrying options and flexibility for any traveler.

  • Utility: 5 of 5 —Great flexibility as a travel companion. Let’s you carry everything you’ll need for a long trip but also offers the convenience of short day trips.
  • Organization: 4 of 5 — Plenty of pockets and compartments for the traveler, including some small-item organization in the top lid.
  • Construction: 3 of 5 — Decent materials but could be more premium for such a large bag. Better reinforcements for the stitching and more padding on the bottoms would have been nice too.
  • Aesthetics: 4 of 5 — The bags are a subtle “obsidian” color and most of the straps and buckles can be hidden in some way to keep the bag from looking too cluttered. When both bags are packed and they’re attached, it can look pretty stout.
  • Comfort: 3 of 5 —The bags have nice padding design, but with very little padding on the daypack there is a limit to how comfortable it can be. The straps pinching on my neck and armpits can be annoying after a while.
  • Life-Integration: 3 of 5 — Fairly straightforward, but you need to get used to all the different straps and buckles and where to use each one.
  • X-Factor: 3 of 5 — Thule is a Swedish company and has become an icon of outdoor gear and transport. As a pretty well-established backpack company, there isn’t much marketing that they need to do so their x-factor is fairly neutral.

Thanks for reading! If you’re interested in getting the Thule Landmark 60, please consider using our Amazon Associates link: https://amzn.to/34WZOrX

Thule also has 40L and 70L versions of the Landmark. The 40L version is just the travel bag by itself.

Kuznetski Most area in Moscow

Kuznetski Most is a small area between Tverskaya street, Kremlin, and Kitai Gorod (Lubyanka) and it's a downtown of Moscow. First of all, 'Kuznya' is a great place to walk: it is a real Moscow area, not a postcard at all, hectic busy streets neighbour tranquil lanes and courtyards with traditional architecture. There are also many very nice cafes, restaurants, clubs, and shops. If you want a cool place to meet people, go for a walk and to get the real feeling of the city, check out this area.

Kuznetsky Most area - photo by Sergey Rodovichenkov @FlickR

Long time ago there were only half-broken low wooden houses in Kuznetski Most area, and it was the place where poor blacksmithes lived. Blacksmith is 'Kuznets' in Russia, hence the name. In the beginning of the street (on top) there was a bridge over a small river, later this river was put underground, so there's no bridge anymore. About 200 years ago there was a rich Moscovitan noble buying this area. He immediately put away all the blacksmiths' houses and started to build a fancy new district. Just in few years he built up beautiful houses, with impressive ornaments, rich decoration, pools in the courtyards. Also, he opened some French boutiques in the area. That's when Kuznetski Most started to become fashionable. In a short time all the elite moved to this  area, and those who wasn't so fast were coming here to make some shopping and to sit in many of the restaurants and cafes around.  In the 20th century, when the communist times arrived, most of the buildings were given to government offices, some were given to soviet shops. The area became boring, the architecture was slowly deteriorating , but nobody seemed to care. In the beginning of the 90s  the area was revived again: the buildings were  restored , there was many new cafes being opened, boutiques, and shops. One important landmark of Kuznetsky Most is that it's home to FSB (Federal Security Bureau - former KGB) offices, and if you walk along Kuznetsky Most street you can get to the FSB reception, which is open 24 hours (in case you have something to report).

Early History

thule men's landmark 60l travel pack obsidian

In the December 1812 manifesto, Tsar Alexander declared the cathedral would “…signify Our gratitude to Divine Providence for saving Russia from the doom that overshadowed Her and to preserve the memory of the unheard of efforts, loyalty, and love for our faith and homeland displayed during these difficult days by the Russian people…” While planning for the cathedral began as Napoleon and his army retreated from Russia its completion was decades later.

Under a plan by the architect Vitberg an initial start of the construction of cathedral began on October 12 , 1817 with laying and blessing of the cornerstone. The site chosen was on Sparrow Hills between the Smolensk and Kaluga roads. The site, however, was found to be unstable and not suitable for the planned structure. As alternatives were considered Alexander was succeeded by his brother Nicholas I who had different architectural preferences. Konstantin A. Ton presented a second plan that placed the cathedral on a different site on the bank of the Moscow River that was occupied by the Aleksevevsky Convent and the Church of All Saints. The new plan was approved by Nicholas I on April 10 , 1832.

After moving the convent to Sokolniki, construction of the Cathedral began on September 10 , 1839 with the laying of the cornerstone. Construction of the huge structure continued for forty years. By 1841, the walls of the lower level were completed, followed by the joining of the arch of the main cupola in 1846. Covered by scaffolding, work continued on the exterior facing of the building and a start was made on construction of the metal roofs and lesser cupolas. The main cupola was completed in 1849. In 1860, the scaffolding was removed and the Cathedral was revealed for the first time in all its glory.

Construction continued on details of the structure while areas around the Cathedral, including riverbank terraces and squares, were completed. By 1881 the major construction was finished, including a bronze balustrade and exterior lanterns. Work on the interior frescoes continued for another twenty years. The Cathedral was formally named the Cathedral of Christ the Savior on December 13 , 1880, when the priests and other clergy were also assigned to it for the first time. The Cathedral was consecrated on Ascension Day, May 26 , 1883, the day that Tsar Alexander III was crowned. Chapels , located in the upper gallery, were dedicated to Ss. Nicholas and Alexander Nevsky , on June 12 and July 8 , 1883 respectively.

The design of the cathedral followed that of ancient Russian churches that were built in the Byzantine style. It differed in having a more regular shape and was lighter in form. The cathedral contained a number of altars . The staff of the Cathedral was relatively small; the rector , an assistant rector, three priests, one protodeacon , two deacons , two subdeacons , four readers , two sextons, twelve bell-ringers, one baker (who made prosphora ), and the choir. Among the leaders of the choir were the famous composers A. A. Arkhangelsky and P. G. Chesnokov.

In the following years services were held regularly. Among the important events marked in the Cathedral were the 500th anniversary of the death of St. Sergius of Radonezh , the 100th anniversary of the war of 1812, the 300th anniversary of the Romanov dynasty, and consecration of memorials to Tsar Alexander III and Nicholas Gogol. The opening session of the council of 1917-1918 , that reinstated the patriarchate in the Russian Church, was held in the Cathedral. The Cathedral became the center for education and enlightenment.

After the assumption of governmental power by the Bolsheviks, the Cathedral was eventually closed. The site that it was on, as well as for ideological reasons, became an important factor in Bolshevik urban planning. Their plans entailed construction of a grandiose Palace of Soviets on the site topped with a statue of Vladimir Illich Ulyanov (Lenin) as a symbol of socialist victory and the leader of world proletariat. On December 5 , 1931 destruction of the Cathedral began under direction of Joseph Vissarionovich Djugashvili (Stalin) . It was a year before the site was cleared.

The construction of the palace was hampered from the start by lack of funds, problems with the foundation soil, flooding from the nearby Moscow River, and then World War II. The hugh hole blighted the area for years until Nikita Khrushchev had the site converted into a hugh swimming pool during the 1950s.

Recent history

The political thaw of the late 1980s brought on by a period of perestroika and the fall of the Soviet Union created an opening in which the Holy Synod of the Church of Russia , led by Patriarch Alexei II , requested the government of Russia and the City of Moscow for restoration of the destroyed Cathedral. Having been given approval in February 1990, the construction of the restored Cathedral began under Aleksey Denisov replicating the original design. Ordinary citizens contributed greatly to the construction fund that was started in 1994. After construction of the restored cathedral was well under way Denisov replaced by Zurab Tsereteli who made some controversial changes to the original design.

thule men's landmark 60l travel pack obsidian

In 1996, the lower part of the building was completed and, in 1996, the church within it was consecrated to the Transfiguration of Our Lord. The completed Cathedral of Christ the Savior was consecrated on August 19 , 2000. Monumental statues of the Tsars Alexander II and Nicholas II were placed near the Cathedral and several chapels were built on the cathedral square.

On May 17 , 2007, in the assembly hall also located in the Cathedral, the ‘‘Act of Canonical Communion between the Moscow Patriarchate of the Russian Orthodox Church and Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia’’ ( ROCOR ) was signed, restoring full communion with the Moscow Patriarchate. The reunion was celebrated by a Divine Liturgy concelebrated by Alexei II, Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and Metr. Laurus , First Hierarch of ROCOR.
