The 10 definitive time travel movies
Slide show: films that defy the clock, from the sublime ("donnie darko") to the ridiculous ("bill and ted's), by salon staff.
To commemorate the release of the deliriously stupid " Hot Tub Time Machine ," here are some of the most memorable excursions into Einsteinian paradox from cinema history. Ranging from the sublime (Richard Kelly's mysterious cult hit "Donnie Darko") to the ridiculous ("Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure"), from huge hits like the "Terminator" and "Back to the Future" series to leaden flops like "The Time Traveler's Wife" and from the deadly serious to the gleefully comic, these movies illustrate the central paradox of time travel: Go back far enough, and your mom was really hot.
We've excerpted blurbs from the relevant Salon reviews (where available) or borrowed comments from one of our favorite outside critics, Roger Ebert. -- Andrew O'Hehir

The Quantum Physics of Time Travel
The Grandfather Paradox • Our friend Sonia travels back in time and meets her grandparents • The paradox: • How can Sonia be sitting here telling us about her adventure if her grandparents never got together? • When she returns to 1934, can she bring her grandparents’ romance to a premature end?
The Grandfather Paradox If Sonia can prevent her own birth, there is a contradiction If she cannot, that inability conflicts with common sense, for what would prevent Sonia from behaving as she pleases?
The Painter and the Critic • An art critic from the future visits a 20th century painter • Reproductions exist because they’re copied from the paintings, and the paintings exist because they’re copied from the reproductions
Relativity • Physicists traditionally invoke a chronology principle that rules out travel to the past– travel to the future is fine • Einstein’s theory of relativity and aging • Four dimensional space time • Your life forms a four-dimensional “worm” or “worldline” in space-time • A flash of light spreading out in all four direction forms a cone in space time– a “lightcone”
Terms • Closed timelike curve: space time gets so distorted it forms a closed loop • Autonomy principle: it is possible to create in our immediate environment any configuration of matter that the laws of physics permit locally • Consistency principle: the only configurations of matter that can occur locally are those that are self-consistent globally • Ex. Grandfather paradox • Knowledge paradox: knowledge can only come into existence as a result of problem-solving processes • Ex. Art Critic
Quantum Mechanics • Stephen Hawking argues that quantum mechanical effects would either prevent CTCs from forming or would destroy any would-be time traveler approaching one • But we could maybe find them at submicroscopic scales • Quantum mechanics predicts all possible outcomes of an observation and the probability of each • If something can happen, it does in some universe– “multiverse”
Time Travel in Literature
Traveling to the Future • More Widely represented by literature. • Attempt to preserve the death of famous literary figures (i.e. stopping Hemingway’s suicide in the Kilimanjaro Device). • Transporting Thomas Wolfe out of his death bed in 1938 for last long writing assignment (in Forever the Earth). • Recognizes that literary and artistic genius are not reproducible. Acknowledging the difficulties mass time traveling would pose to society, focuses on targeting specific individuals who can make a difference (that would not dramatically alter our own disposition or being).
Traveling Back in Time • Grandfather Paradox. More modern idea. • Of Time and Third Avenue (Bester), Mimsy Were the Borogoves (Padgett), Something for Nothing (Skeckley) all introduces time traveler from the future. • Contains wary message : unearned gifts generally bring grief and greater loss. • Analogy of the Three Wishes • Final wish undoing the unforseen consequences of the first two is the precursor to all modern change the past stories
Experiencing Time Traveling in the Present (1/2) • Episodic memory implies a mental reconstruction of some earlier event, including at least some of the particularities of that event, such as the principal characters involved, the actions that took place, the setting, and the emotional reactions. • The idea could be readily extended into the future. • Generative process, incorporating known elements but arranged in particular ways to create the experience of events that are actually occurring.
Experiencing Time Traveling in the Present (2/2) • Time traveling by dreaming (i.e. Wells’ “The Dream”, Bellamy’s “Looking Backward”) • Element of suspense and intrigue without the complications that time travel might pose on our own existence. • Sleeping to get characters to the future becomes widely used (i.e. The Year 2440) • Instead of time traveling, wants to create someone who is “Out of Time.” Threatening -> Victim.

Lessons Learned From TV Time Travel… • Don’t change ANYTHING. Ever. • Change things if you have to….things will be catastrophic if you don’t! • Don’t talk to your past self • You probably know too much and the knowledge is shockingly difficult • Always be careful • It’s weird to meet your past self and you should generally try to avoid it. • The fate of the world and various realities rest on your capable shoulders!
100 Years of Solitude
Time Travel in One Hundred Years of Solitude Published in 1967 by Gabriel GarcíaMárquez
Several Interpretations of Time • The general movement of the history and of the family appears to follow linear progression of events—along an arrow of time marked by genealogical progression.1 • Time as circular movement • Time as relative movement • Qualitative measures of time
Linear Time • Creation: “At that time Macondo was a village of twenty adobe houses, built on the bank of a river of clear water that ran along a bed of polished stones…The world was so recent that many things lacked names, and in order to indicate them it was necessary to point” (p.6). • Similar to Bible in that: “That time” is the time before history, before language, before civilization. Like biblical time after creation, it will move through the generations, tracing the movement along its arrow through the genealogies of the family tree: from Jose ArcadioBuendía, the first of the line, to Aureliano the last of the line. 2
Circular Time • Cyclical Time exists side by side the arrow of time. • Ice example (p.6) • Evident in Ch. 2 in which we find ourselves amidst the town of Riohacha during a 16th century attack by Sir Francis Drake. • The very lives of some of the Buendias are shaped by circular time patters—Jose Arcardio’s sister, Amarantaand her brother Aureliano. 3
Circular Time (Continued) • PilarTernera who is the card reader states: “…the history of the family was a machine with unavoidable repetitions, a turning wheel that would have gone on spilling into eternity…” (p.425). • The family tree stands for linear time. However, the Buendias family tree is unusual. The same names are always passed on from generation to generation. The pattern of name-repetition appears to neutralize time—the genealogy does not imply a progress or development along the arrow of time as in Genesis. Furthermore, it appears that a certain name implies certain qualities in the person or a certain personality.4 -For instance, the Jose Arcadios are always extroverted, men of action, whereas the Aurelianos are more introverted and visionary. -In this sense, the arrow, linear view of time becomes meaningless as a measure of human progression. -Incest Metaphor
Relative Time “Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel AurelianoBuendía was to remember that distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice” (P.6). • Colonel AurelianoBuendía’s time: Future=Many years later, Present=as he faced the firing squad, Past=took him to discover ice • Narrator’s time: Future=the order of discourse, story yet to be told, Present=utterance of discourse, Past=time of events being narrated, when things happened (includes Buendía’s future, present, and past). • Reader’s time: Future=all that remains to be read, Present=the act of reading, Past=all that has been read • These two lines highlight the relative unstable, shifting nature of time. Time is relativistic in relation to the position of an observer: character, narrator, reader.5
Qualitative Measures of Time • There is also a time of decay; a meaningless, unproductive, undifferentiated time: “he had seen them as he passed by, sitting in their parlors with an absorbed look and folded arms, feeling unbroken time pass, relentless time, because it was useless to divide it into months and years, and the days into hours, when one could do nothing but contemplate the rain” (p.208). • Qualitative measures of time—like decay and (growth)—seem to overlap with the arrow and the circle as the main models of time reckoning and perception.6 • They add a particular dimension to them (think of linear arrow and circle as 2d, spiral as 3-d, these seem to add the fourth dimension).
Time Travel • The cyclical patter of time lends a new dimension to the arrow of history. It is connected to a back and forth movement—from past to future and from future to past—through the arrow of time. Science and science fiction call this movement time travel.7 • Using different narrative techniques such as third-person narrators, specific point of view narrators, and streams of consciousness, Márquez is able to create an experience of time travel. • For instance, Jose Arcadio connects the pendulum mechanism of a lock to a mechanical ballerina. This causes the ballerina to dance to the rhythm of her own music for three days without interruption. This causes Arcadio’s biological clock to break down: He stopped eating. He stopped sleeping. Only the vigilance and care of Rebeca kept him from being dragged off by his imagination into a state of perpetual delirium from which he would never recover” (p.84).
Time Travel • He begins to slip away into this delirium in which he discovers that space and time are not what we think them to be. For instance, he walks into Aureliano’s workshop and asks, “What day is it today?” Aureliano tells him that it is Tuesday. “I was thinking the same thing, replies Arcadio, “but suddenly I realized that it’s still Monday, like yesterday. Look at the sky, look at the walls…Today is Monday too” (p.85). The following day he again concludes that it is still Monday. The next day, he walks into the workshop sobbing: “The time machine (his clock mechanism) has broken” and he proceeds to go mad. • He realizes that the concept of absolute time does not correspond to natural processes and changes—the world told him that everything was the same so how could it be Tuesday when everything he said told him it was the same as Monday—he had effectively stopped time or was continually traveling to the past. Yet, neither nature’s rhythms, nor human perceptions can be fully accounted for by the time machine (clock and calendar).8
Time Travel (Melquídes) • Melquíades, the gypsy, is a time traveler. He is the only one who defeats time: he becomes immortal. Time travel becomes plausible when time is not linear. • “…Melquíades had not put the events in the order of man’s conventional time, but had concentrated a century of daily episodes in such a way that they coexisted in one instant” (p.446). • Melquídes’ time code represents an alternative to “man’s conventional time”, that is to the view of time that Jose Arcadio rejects when he steps into a madness that turns out to be a higher wisdom. Only by leaving the “conventional time” behind and steeping into the time symbolically inscribed in Melquíades’ code, can we take the leap that will reveal a new wisdom, in a vision of reality that was hidden by the time habits of succession and predictability.9
Questions • In what ways do various media forms portray quantum physics? • How do notions of time travel (and the lessons of time travel) relate to understandings of time we have studied so far? For example, Aristotle? Descartes? • What are some major themes across the board in time travel literature, television, and movies? • Why do you think there is such a cultural obsession with time travel? • What would you travel back in time to do?

Travel slideshows: The best way to display your adventures
Just came back from a trip? Don’t let your pictures and videos go to waste – turn them into a captivating travel slideshow. In this post, we are going to discuss why you might need to create a slideshow video and share a bunch of tips and tricks to help you display your memories in the best way possible. Now why don’t we begin?
Why you should design a travel slideshow
Making a travel slideshow with moving pictures is the best way to tell the story of your journey. Not only will you preserve your priceless memories, but you will also show off your best shots from the trip in one cool movie. The video format is getting more and more popular, and you probably don’t want to be left behind, do you? If you post a video, it will definitely get more likes than a regular post with still pictures.
Besides, a slideshow is an easy and quick way to share all your adventures at once without having to send each file separately to your friends and family members.
Tips for creating a travel slideshow
1. how to pick the right soundtrack.
Suitable slideshow music can make your travel video much more engaging. To find the perfect song, you need to figure out its function first. Do you want it to evoke certain emotions, maintain the viewer’s attention, or give the video the vibes you want?
Once you find that out, you can look for a tune among your favorites, but I recommend you choose a song of a popular genre since heavy metal or opera might not be appealing to your audience. Instead, choose some classical music, famous hits, or just neutral but catchy tunes. If the country you visited has national music, you can use it, too – it will create the atmosphere of the place and will display their culture better.
Besides, you can manipulate the music in different ways. For instance, if the soundtrack suddenly pauses, it will grab the viewer’s attention. With these breaks, you can highlight an important moment or create a comic effect.
No matter what song you choose, make sure the lyrics are appropriate for your audience, and that you don’t violate the copyrights of the artist, especially if you are going to post the vacation slideshow online. You should either search for royalty-free music or purchase a limited license for non-commercial use.
2. What quotes to include?
Adding a few quotes to a travel slideshow is certainly a good idea. They can be humorous, philosophical, inspirational, and uplifting. Quotes about personal growth and love are the most popular types, but there are also lots of quotes about traveling. Here is a list of travel quotes that you can include in your slideshow.
However, don’t be tempted to throw as many quotes as possible – they should be relevant to each slide you add them to. Four or five quotes will be more than enough for a slideshow video. I also suggest that you highlight the key insights within the quotes using a different text color.
3. How to animate slides with effects?
Animating a slideshow is the most joyous part of the design process. But you might feel confused when you see all these animation effects in a program. Here are a few tips that will help you make the slideshow more lively.
First, take a look at each slide and decide what the viewer should focus on – here’s what you should animate. In case there are multiple photos on a slide, don’t have them all moving at the same time. You can also add transitions, a type of animation in between slides. It’s best to keep it simple and use just a few transition effects for all your slides. It can get confusing for your audience if you mix up dozens of transition styles.
4. How to export and share the new slideshow?
The format you save the slideshow in can play a pivotal role. You’ll need one video type for social media and another for playing the video on a computer. So how to save the travel slideshow? Most devices support MP4, so you can export the project in this format to save it on your phone and share it with others on social networks or messengers. You can also burn it to a DVD to display the slideshow on a big screen.
Slideshow making mistakes to avoid
Now that we’ve shared a couple of dos, I can also tell you a few don’ts. There are several common mistakes that people make when they design a slideshow. So let’s see what they are.
1. The slideshow is too long
There is nothing worse than a long slideshow video with photos scrolling for over 10 or 20 minutes. The average attention span is getting shorter each year, so most viewers will probably stop watching after 2-3 minutes. The best travel slideshows have one thing in common – they are short. This will also encourage you to be more assertive about what to include in your vacation slideshow.
2. There is no storyline
Often, slideshow makers add a bunch of pictures and video clips in random order. It is a quick way to make a slideshow, but viewers might feel quite perplexed seeing photos from different moments of your trip – they don’t understand what is going on and might get bored after a few of these slides. To avoid such a failure, I recommend you consider the concept of the project first. You can plan or sketch how your travel slideshow will look and what media files you’ll need to put in it. This will allow you to visualize the outcome and ensure that all of your images fit together. While planning the structure of your video, you can also think about how you’re going to animate it with transitions and other effects.
3. The video doesn’t have a narration
If you’re present while showing the slideshow to your family or friends, you can skip this point. However, if you’re going to share the video with someone online, or want to preserve memories from the journey for the future, you will definitely need to tell your story through narration. By adding voice comments, you can let your viewers know about your thoughts and feelings about the countries you’ve been to. You can either record yourself on your phone and upload the recording to your computer, or add a voiceover right in the slideshow-making program you use for designing this project. If you don’t want to narrate using voice comments, you can simply add a few captions.
How to make a vacation slideshow – final thoughts
As you can see, you can easily put together all your shots and videos and create a truly memorable slideshow about your trip. In this post, we’ve discussed the basics of the slideshow-making process, but you can find a step-by-step guide and a handful of more tips and tricks in this article on how to make travel slideshows .

Screen Rant
How the delorean time travelled without going 88mph in back to the future 2.
Doc Brown's DeLorean had to reach 88 MPH to travel through time, but at the end of Back to the Future Part 2, it looked as if the rules were changed.
Back to the Future Part 2 seemed to break its own rule, allowing the DeLorean to time travel without reaching 88 MPH, but it turns out this isn't a pothole after all. Naturally, the beloved science fiction franchise is full of such questions and mysteries, and it often takes a bend of the imagination to make everything make sense. Whenever time travel gets involved, there are sure to be some paradoxes. However, in the case of Doc's jump to 1885 at the end of Back to the Future Part 2 , there is a perfectly reasonable explanation.
By the end of the second Back to the Future movie , Marty and Doc had become pretty familiar with the ins and outs of time travel. They jumped back to 1955, returned to 1985, traveled to 2015, and repeated this cycle several times before a final trip back to 1955. From here, The pair were ready to finally head back to their true time, 1985, once and for all. However, just as Doc and his flying DeLorean were about to return to the ground and pick up Marty, the time-machine car was struck by lightning and sent to 1885 . The problem is, the DeLorean wasn't traveling at the requisite 88 MPH when it jumped.
Back To The Future: All 8 Timelines In The Movies Explained
The delorean reached 88 mph thanks to being struck by lightning in back to the future 2, the delorean traveled at 88 mph in a rapid loop-de-loop.
The problem regarding the stationary DeLorean being sent back in time was spotted relatively quickly after Back to the Future Part 2 was released in 1989, and it has plagued many ever since. It was clear that the time machine still needed to get up to 88 MPH since Marty and Doc had to use a steam engine to get it up to speed at the end of Back to the Future Part 3 . So, the change didn't come down to upgrades made to the DeLorean in 2015 (which eliminated the need for plutonium after the first Back to the Future ). As it turns out, the answer is pretty simple.
The DeLorean did get up to 88 MPH. In fact, it likely traveled much faster than that.
According to Back to the Future creator Bob Gale , the DeLorean did get up to 88 MPH. In fact, it likely traveled much faster than that. When the car was struck by lightning while flying in the air, the vehicle was sent spinning on its axis . It looped around so quickly that the required speed was achieved, and between this and the power of the bolt of lighting (or perhaps Mr. Fusion), the DeLorean's time-traveling capabilities were activated. Of course, it all happened so quickly that Marty (and the audience) could barely see it. Still, there was clear evidence of this sudden loop-de-loop.
The Backwards 99 At The End Of Back To The Future 2 Explained
The mysterious number in back to the future part 2 didn't have a secret meaning after all.
Gale's answer about how the DeLorean got up to 88 MPH makes perfect sense when remembering the mysterious backward 99 that appeared in the sky in Back to the Future Part 2 . This number became the inspiration for a wide variety of fan theories. Some believed the number referred to different points where Doc and Marty had already traveled in time. The number nine was visible on street signs in both 1955 and 2015, and the backward 99 might have referred to Doc going backward in time. However, the truth is much simpler.
As previously explained, the DeLorean was thrown into a rapid loo-de-loop after it was struck by lightning, and since the speed was beyond 88 MPH, the car went back in time. Whenever the time machine jumped before this, fiery tire marks were left in its wake. Of course, this wasn't quite possible at the end of Back to the Future Part 2 since the DeLorean was flying in the air. So, the fiery tread marks were left floating in the sky instead. The backward 99 was just the visible path the car had taken to get up to speed after being struck.
Why The DeLorean Sends Doc Brown Back To 1885
A malfunction was responsible for kicking off back to the future part 3.
Another mystery connected to the DeLorean's spontaneous jump is why Doc traveled back to 1885 when the car was set to go forward to 1985. This was subtly answered moments before lighting struck at the end of Back to the Future Part 2 when Doc gave the time circuits a good old-fashioned punch to set them right again. Since they had been malfunctioning only moments before, it's no great surprise that a jolt of lightning would cause the dial to change from 1985 to 1885. Of course, without the letter that Doc arranged to be delivered to Marty, no one would have known precisely where he ended up.

Taking up where the first movie left off, Back to the Future Part II sees Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel to the year 2015, where their efforts to fix the future end up causing even bigger problems as Biff Tannen wreaks havoc across the timeline with the help of a stolen sports almanac. Martin J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd return in Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale's second installment of their iconic trilogy.
Superradiant atoms could push the boundaries of how precisely time can be measured
Superradiant atoms can help us measure time more precisely than ever. In a new study, researchers from the University of Copenhagen present a new method for measuring the time interval, the second, mitigating some of the limitations that today's most advanced atomic clocks encounter. The result could have broad implications in areas such as space travel, volcanic eruptions and GPS systems.
The second is the most precisely-defined unit of measurement, compared to other base units such as the kilogram, meter, and degree Kelvin. Time is currently measured by atomic clocks in different places around the world, which together, tell us what time it is. Using radio waves, atomic clocks continuously send signals that synchronize our computers, phones and wristwatches.
Oscillations are the key to keeping time. In a grandfather clock, these oscillations are from a pendulum's swinging from side to side every second, while in an atomic clock, it is a laser beam which corresponds to an energy transition in strontium and oscillates about a million billion times per second.
But according to PhD fellow Eliot Bohr from the Niels Bohr Institute -- great-grandson of Niels Bohr -- even atomic clocks could become more precise. This is because the detection laser, used by most modern atomic clocks to read the oscillation of atoms, heats up the atoms so much that they escape -- which degrades precision.
"Because the atoms constantly need to be replaced with fresh new atoms, while new atoms are being prepared, the clock loses time ever so slightly. Therefore, we are attempting to overcome some of the current challenges and limitations of the world's best atomic clocks by, among other things, reusing the atoms so that they don't need to be replaced as often," explains Eliot Bohr who was employed at the Niels Bohr Institute when he did the research, but who is now PhD fellow at the University of Colorado.
He is the lead author of a new study published in the scientific journal Nature Communications , which uses an innovative and perhaps more efficient way of measuring time.
Superradiance and cooling to absolute zero
The current methodology consists of a hot oven that spits roughly 300 million strontium atoms into an extraordinarily chilly ball of cold atoms known as a magneto-optical trap, or MOT. The temperature of these atoms is approximately -273 °C -- very near absolute zero -- and there are two mirrors with a light field in between them to enhance the atomic interactions. Together with his research colleagues, Bohr has developed a new method to read out the atoms.
"When the atoms land in the vacuum chamber, they lie completely still because it is so cold, which makes it possible to register their oscillations with the two mirrors at opposing ends of the chamber," explains Eliot Bohr.
The reason why the researchers don't need to heat the atoms with a laser and destroy them is thanks to a quantum physical phenomenon known as 'superradiance'. The phenomenon occurs when the group of strontium atoms is entangled and at the same time emits light in the field between the two mirrors.
"Themirrors cause the atoms to behave as a single unit. Collectively, they emit a powerful light signal that we can use to read out the atomic state, a crucial step for measuring time. This method heats up the atoms minimally, so It all happens without replacing the atoms, and this has the potential to make it a more precise measurement method," explains Bohr.
GPS, space missions and volcanic eruptions
According to Eliot Bohr, the new research result may be beneficial for developing a more accurate GPS system. Indeed, the roughly 30 satellites that constantly circle Earth and tell us where we are need atomic clocks to measure time.
"Whenever satellites determine the position of your phone or GPS, you are using an atomic clock in a satellite. The precision of the atomic clocks is so important that If that atomic clock is off by a microsecond, it means an inaccuracy of about 100 meters on the Earth's surface," explains Eliot Bohr.
Future space missions are another area where the researcher foresees more precise atomic clocks making a significant impact.
"When people and crafts are sent out into space, they venture even further away from our satellites. Consequently, the requirements for precise time measurements to navigate in space are much greater," he says.
The result could also be helpful in the development of a new generation of smaller, portable atomic clocks that could be used for more than "just" measuring time.
"Atomic clocks are sensitive to gravitational changes and can therefore be used to detect changes in Earth's mass and gravity, and this could help us predict when volcanic eruptions and earthquakes will occur," says Bohr.
Bohr emphasizes that while the new method using superradiant atoms is very promising, it is still a "proof of concept" which needs further refinement. .
The research was conducted by the team of Jörg Helge Müller and Jan Thomsen at the Niels Bohr Institute, in collaboration with PhD students Sofus Laguna Kristensen and Julian Robinson-Tait, and postdoc Stefan Alaric Schäffer. The project also included contributions from theorists Helmut Ritsch and Christoph Hotter from the University of Innsbruck, as well as Tanya Zelevinsky from Columbia University.

Watch Live as NASA Launches Solar Sail to Test Sunlight-Propelled Space Travel
The mission will ride on board rocket lab's electron, reusing one of the rocket's boosters for the first time..
A new experimental mission by NASA is ready to set sail in orbit, using photons from the Sun to propel its way to higher altitudes.

The Advanced Composite Solar Sail System (ACS3) is scheduled for launch on Tuesday during a launch window that opens at 6 p.m. ET. The mission will lift off on board a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from the company’s Launch Complex 1 on the Mahia Peninsula of New Zealand. You can tune in to the launch through Rocket Lab’s live stream on its website or watch it through the feed below.
NASA’s ACS3 is designed to test new materials and deployable structures for solar sail propulsion systems, including new composite booms that will be used to unfurl the solar sail once it reaches orbit. The composite booms are made from a polymer material; they’re lightweight while still being stiff and resistant to bending and warping when exposed to different temperatures. They work the same way as a sailboat’s boom, except they are designed to catch the propulsive power of sunlight rather than wind. Once unfurled, the solar sail will stretch across 30 feet (9 meters) per side.
Solar sails run on photons from the Sun, causing small bursts of momentum that propel the spacecraft farther away from the star. If a spacecraft is able to surpass the drag from Earth’s atmosphere, it could potentially reach very high altitudes.
Rocket Lab’s Electron will deploy the microwave-sized cubesat about 600 miles (966 kilometers) above Earth, which is roughly twice the altitude of the International Space Station. From there, the solar sail will be high enough to gain altitude and overcome atmospheric drag using the tiny force of sunlight on the sail, which is roughly equivalent to the weight of a paperclip resting on your palm, according to NASA .
NASA isn’t the only one being experimental on this mission. Rocket Lab is reusing an Electron booster for the first time during the upcoming launch. The company’s “Beginning Of The Swarm” mission will launch its Electron rocket with a booster that was already used for a previous launch .
On January 31, the “Four Of A Kind” mission saw the Electron rocket’s first stage fall back towards Earth with the help of a parachute before splashing down in the Pacific Ocean around 17 minutes after liftoff. The company recovered the rocket booster and is now reusing it for another flight. Rocket Lab has been experimenting with Electron’s reusability, hoping to inch itself closer to its main industry rival SpaceX. Electron’s upcoming launch will be a major test of the company’s ability to reuse the two-stage vehicle.
The Electron rocket will also be carrying NEONSAT-1, an Earth observation satellite for the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology.

Hands-On The Patek Philippe Aquanaut 5164G
It’s no “blue steel,” but the aquanaut remains undefeated when it comes to elegant travel complications..
I bet most people have a watch they’ve convinced themselves they’re going to have one day, no matter how out of reach it might always be. The Patek ref. 5164 has long been my white whale. Like James Stacey, I'm a lover of a versatile GMT, and the Aquanaut is – in my opinion – the king.
When I wrote about the discontinuation of the ref. 5164A, I called it a "fan-favorite." That might be a bit much to say about a watch that cost over $40,000 and was nearly completely unobtainable by anyone but VIPs at Patek, but it was a great watch to imagine wearing and even better if you could actually get lucky enough to own one. The cool design, comfortable strap, and the sporty specs (from water-resistance to steel case) and black colorway all made it the pinnacle of "quiet luxury" before quiet luxury was a thing.
There's an elegance to the Aquanaut Travel Time, which hasn't changed with the new ref. 5164G. I wear my Rolex GMT-Master II almost every time I travel, but there's something so cool about the tactile experience of using the pushers on the left-hand side of the case. While it's relatively easy to use a "flyer" GMT to set your new timezone (unscrew the crown and pull out to the appropriate position to jump the hour forward or back), there's nothing like using the pushers on the ref. 5164. The top pusher advances the hour hand by one hour for each click, while the bottom takes the hour back. Either way, a skeletonized hour hand keeps tracking your home time but hides, uncluttering the dial wh Two apertures track day or night in the home and local time zone (blue for night, white for day). It's a beautiful symmetrical watch with the date on a subdial at 6 o'clock.
This type of design has a long history at Patek, dating back to the early 1960s with the ref. 2597 Travel Time Calatrava. As James Stacey mentioned in his Hands-On with the 5164R in 2019 , the movement in the 2597 originated from the mind of Louis Cottier – the father of the worldtime – which means that any ref. 5164 follows in an important linage of creativity. But the bold design and sportiness of the Aquanaut Travel Time is probably far beyond what Cottier could have ever imagined.
While the ref. 5164A is no longer available, Patek's choice to continue the long-running reference with another new version in precious metal was somewhat predictable. I had hoped that Patek would introduce a new Aquanaut Travel Time with a new reference in steel. It would have likely been the biggest release of Watches & Wonders in a quiet year like this, but it wouldn't have been in line with the brand's decision to avoid steel sports models for now.
It also wouldn't have made much sense as the Aquanaut Travel Time ref. 5164 remained in the catalog in rose gold, so two generations of watches being in the catalog together was unlikely. The new white gold version brings back a white-metal option to the catalog, using the same caliber 26‑330 S C FUS movement, so yes, this is mostly a case metal and dial/strap color change. But it also changes how the watch wears on the wrist.
The Aquanaut Travel Time continues to be one of the most comfortable-wearing sports watches on the market, with a great custom-cut rubber strap and a deployant clasp. The case still measures a slim 10.2mm thick with a 40.8mm measurement from 2 to 8 o'clock. The lugs also drop down nicely to hug the wrist. But in gold, the watch starts to feel top-heavy, a problem with many precious metal sports watches on straps instead of bracelets – that heavy case material can throw off the balance. It also means that Patek has reduced the sportiness of the watch in another, more practical way, with the water resistance now down to 30m from 120m from the 5164A. This is not just a change for the 5164G but also an updated specification for the 5164R and all other Aquanuat and Nautilus models. Either metal came with a display caseback, but unfortunately, the new water resistance makes me a little more hesitant to imagine taking the Aquanaut into – well – the aqua .
However, the question of fit and balance is a personal preference, just like the new dial color. While Rolex has a penchant for giving options on options of colors to fit different customers' preferences, that's not the path Patek likes to take. Just like their confidence in the materials they want to use (customer demand be damned), they also have a strong design sense. After a few quiet years of releases, I would have imagined Patek would have wanted the “pop” of hype that would have come with releasing a "khaki" Aquanaut Travel Time in white gold or something bolder in platinum. But, there's probably something to be said for Patek trying to continue to cool demand. Prices for the 5164A have slowly decreased, not to retail, but it's a start.
Instead, we got the opaline blue-gray dial, embossed Aquanaut pattern, and white gold case and a $63,040 price tag. Based on the photos, I was afraid the dial would be too light blue to be wearable for someone like me who likes something more low-key. While it's not the classic 5164A I've dreamed of for years, it seems darker in person and shifts with the light. That means it feels like it could be a decent daily wear option if you're so lucky.
It will be a bit longer before I get the Aquanaut Travel Time of my dreams. While it's not the watch I wanted to see, it's the one we've got. Undoubtedly, the 5164G will stick around for a while to continue on the now 13-year run of the reference (the longest-lived reference in the catalog, I believe). It seems unlikely that Patek would kill a new release just to introduce a brand-new model one year later. In the meantime, plenty of people will enjoy the new 5164G. To steal a line from James, it remains my pick for the coolest modern Patek Philippe. I'll still keep my dream of an Aquanaut Travel Time in steel, but this is the watch I need right now, while I save up a bit more for the day that Patek brings back my white whale.
For more information on the new Patek Philippe Aquanaut Travel Time ref. 5164G, including complete specs, read our "Introducing" post or visit Patek Philippe's website.
