The Bikeriders Review: For A Few Glorious Minutes, I Loved This Throwback Crime Drama

This 48-year-old movie is the expendables of the kung fu movie genre that you need to see, i am 100% not ready for robert pattinson's upcoming cult favorite horror remake.

Tom Cruise's iconic Les Grossman becomes an R-rated Mario in a hilarious Tropic Thunder and The Super Mario Bros. Movie crossover video. Though best known as an action star thanks to his time in the Mission: Impossible and Top Gun franchises, Cruise has occasionally branched out to other genres, the most notable being Ben Stiller's Hollywood satire Tropic Thunder , in which he starred as vulgar producer Les Grossman. Scoring acclaim for his performance, talks have swirled of a potential Grossman spinoff for years, with Cruise reportedly working with Mission: Impossible 's Christopher McQuarrie for a new project featuring the character.

As time draws nearer for the animated film's release, TikTok user Jonkari P has reimagined The Super Mario Bros. Movie in a hilarious way.

The video sees Tom Cruise's Tropic Thunder character Les Grossman as the film's Mario, recreating one of his most iconic rants in which he delivers an R-rated threat to who he thinks is trying to poach one of his clients, now replaced by Bowser Jr. demanding a ransom for Peach's safe return. Will The Super Bros. Mario Movie Create A Franchise Of Crossovers?

Though just a humorous Tropic Thunder edit, the video above does raise curiosity as to whether The Super Mario Bros. Movie will lead to a franchise of interconnected crossovers. A few years after the film was first announced, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa indicated the gaming publisher was keen on developing more adaptations of their titles if the plumber-focused movie proved successful. Rumors have since swirled about a potential Donkey Kong spinoff movie centered on Seth Rogen's character while Charlie Day has expressed interest in helping develop a Luigi's Mansion adaptation.

The Nintendo games have already indicated that the characters exist in the same universe, thus making everyone's inclusion in The Super Mario Bros. Movie not quite an actual crossover, though it doesn't mean larger ones couldn't happen. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 director Jeff Fowler has expressed his hopes in developing a Super Smash Bros. movie , though noted it would require some work from the lawyers to navigate rights issues. This largely stems from Paramount producing the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise while The Super Mario Bros. Movie is set up at Universal.

Given Nintendo has multiple other IPs under their belts, namely The Legend of Zelda , it would be interesting to see if The Super Mario Bros. Movie leads the publisher developing other adaptations. Considering there is already a lot of backlash for the film tied to Chris Pratt's leading role, it does have a major hurdle to overcome, though with trailers promising an otherwise faithful recreation of the games, it may rival Sonic the Hedgehog 's success . Only time will tell when The Super Mario Bros. Movie arrives on April 7.

Viral Tiktok Puts Tom Cruise’s Les Grossman In The Super Mario Bros. Movie, And It’s-A F-ing Great

Let's-A Grossman!

Mario speeding teary eyed on Bullet Bill in The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Tom Cruise taking an angry phone call in Tropic Thunder, pictured side by side.

Speed runs of the various games that inspired 2023’s new movie release The Super Mario Bros . Movie have answered all sorts of questions that pop up over the years. One that may or may not have come up in those runs is the quickest way to return Princess Peach to her stately castle, where Toad, Mario and Luigi await. Well, a viral meme may have found the latest, and best, answer to that question: hire Tropic Thunder ’s Les Grossman to negotiate with Baby Bowser.

Thanks to TikTok user “Jonkari P,” we now have an idea of what that situation would look like, and it’s-a f’n great. Tom Cruise ’s infamous hard case can be seen, with co-star Matthew McConaughey playing the Luigi to his Mario, in the clip shared below:

@jonkari.p ♬ original sound - Jonkari P

Admittedly, this new clip isn’t the previously teased Les Grossman spinoff, an idea that’s “fixated” Cruise and frequent collaborator Christopher McQuarrie . Rather, this is an edited moment from Tropic Thunder, in which Grossman lights into the representatives of the Flaming Dragon faction that holds Ben Stiller ’s Tugg Speedman hostage in the film. That being said, it’s a better fit than you’d expect.

Bowser, coincidentally played in The Super Mario Bros. Movie cast by fellow Tropic Thunder star Jack Black , is pretty much a flaming dragon-adjacent creature, and by association, so are his children and other incarnations. Fictitious biology lesson aside, that’s not enough to stop this Tom Cruise-invented character from striking the fear of Nintendo into Bowser Jr. This, in turn, leads to Princess Peach being shot back home through the power of a canon.

The actual casting of Chris Pratt as the voice of Mario led to an understandable backlash , and it’s a serious subject that can and will be discussed as we make our way closer to the project’s release. However, a fun hypothetical scenario would be to ponder whether or not that same reaction would have been present if Tom Cruise, in a more PG-rated Les Grossman persona, got the role instead.

The answer’s more than likely still a yes, because as original Super Mario Bros. star John Leguizamo pointed out , the lack of ethnically appropriate casting would still be an issue. That serious issue aside, it's admittedly a fun hypothetical we can now enjoy through the power of viral humor.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie presses start on its box office journey on April 7th, only at a theater near you. The Les Grossman spinoff of Tropic Thunder hasn’t been greenlit just yet, but there’s always a chance that this meme could potentially boost the profile of that character to the point where it’d be crazy to say no. Legacy-quels can always appear when you least expect them; just ask anyone who's seen Top Gun : Maverick!

To help bring their beloved characters to life on the big screen, Nintendo's also brought in an all-star Super Mario Bros. Movie cast to lend their voices to the likes of Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, and Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie reactions

Reviews for The Super Mario Bros. Movie are fairly varied. At the time of our most recent update, the Mario movie has a 59% critics rating but a 96% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes .

In What To Watch's review, we rated the film three out of five stars, saying that the film was a 'fun, fast-paced but overly familiar adaptation that could have been a little bit more inventive along the way'.

Rolling Stone 's Christopher Cruz said: "As Nintendo's first serious attempt at conquering filmmaking, it's a lovingly crafted entry point with the potential for more."

IGN rated the film 8/10, calling it: "a fireball of animated fantasy, overcoming a Paper Mario-thin plot with undeniable charm and energy".

The Guardian 's Peter Bradshaw, meanwhile, gave it 2/5 and said of the film: "this much-trailed, much-hyped new animated feature is tedious and flat in all senses, a disappointment to match the live-action version in 1993."

How to watch The Super Mario Bros. movie

The Super Mario Bros. trailer

The final trailer for The Super Mario Bros. Movie begins with a hilarious Luma teasing Luigi and sees Bowser assembling his forces to invade Peach's Kingdom. What follows is an action-packed teaser that shows off more locations from the Mario universe, plus an extended sequence on Rainbow Road. Check it out here:

The first full trailer for The Super Mario Bros. movie arrived at the end of November 2022. This new trailer gave us a slightly clearer idea of what to expect from the film and gave us a proper look at more of the characters in actions like Princess Peach, Luigi, and Donkey Kong. Plus, it's packed full of references to all sorts of Mario games from over the years. Check it out below:

You can also check out the first teaser trailer for the series which saw Bowser leading an attack on a Penguin Kingdom below and find the latest teaser which gave us our first look at Seth Rogen's version of Donkey Kong below:

In a fun bit of promotion, you can also call the Super Mario Bros. and check out a website for their plumbing business. On top of that, a commercial for the business has also dropped online.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie plot

The full synopsis of The Super Mario Bros. Movie from Universal Pictures reads: "While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia ) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

With the assistance of a Mushroom Kingdom resident Toad (Keegan Michael-Key; The Lion King ) and some training from the strong-willed ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom, Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy; The Queen's Gambit ), Mario taps into his own power."

The trailer also makes it look like Bowser is up to his usual tricks, collecting Power Stars and sending his forces to attack the many kingdoms from the Mario universe. By the looks of things, he's got his sights set on the Mushroom Kingdom next, so Princess Peach has decided to take a stand against him. Whether or not Chris Pratt's Mario is up to defending the Kingdom is a different question entirely, as he's not exactly performed perfectly well in the clips we've seen so far...

Let’s get the show on the 🌈 road#SuperMarioMovie pic.twitter.com/24b7J4xVQM February 22, 2023

Who directed The Super Mario Bros. Movie?

Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are behind the camera for The Super Mario Bros. movie. The pair have previously collaborated on Teen Titans Go! and Teen Titans Go! To the Movies. The screenplay has been written by Matthew Fogel ( The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part, Minions: The Rise of Gru ), and the film has been produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Nintendo legend Shigeru Miyamoto.

Will there be a Super Mario Bros. movie sequel?

At the time of writing, we don't yet know whether there will be a second Super Mario Bros. Movie , though the film's huge success at the box office—it's broken Frozen 2 's record for the biggest-ever opening weekend of any animated movie, ever—it's all but certain that Nintendo and Illumination will be teaming up for another project.

Jack Black has already shared his ideas (and ideal casting) for the potential sequel. Speaking to GameSpot , he has teased that he's not sure Bowser will be the big bad next time around, but he thinks Wario could be next. What's more, he's got his eyes on The Last Of Us ' Pedro Pascal to play him!

Black said: "It's not a given that Bowser will return. You know, I did a few Kung Fu Panda movies, and it was a different villain every movie. They may do the same thing", adding: "You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil. Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario."

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a dazzling Super Star of a video game movie

A delightful movie that honors Nintendo's iconic gaming series

Mario, Peach, and Toad look out onto the horizon in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

- Launches in theaters on April 5 - Produced by Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination - Stars Chris Pratt, Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Seth Rogen, and Keegan-Michael Key - Written by Matthew Fogel - Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic - 92-minute runtime

Since 1993, Super Mario Bros. has been a millstone around the Mario franchise's neck. The roundly vilified live-action movie has long been held up as an example of how not to adapt a game series theatrically. And yet, until recently, film studios continued to repeat the mistakes of Super Mario Bros. whenever they attempted to shepherd video game franchises onto the big screen.

Now, almost exactly 30 years on from Mario's first (and critically and commercially panned) cinematic outing, the legendary Italian plumber is back in movie form. The Super Mario Bros. Movie , a joint venture from Nintendo , Universal Pictures, and Illumination Entertainment, aims to lay Mario's theatrical demons to rest for good… but does it?

In short: yes, with a resounding Mario-esque "Wahoo!" for good measure. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a delightfully fun-filled animated adventure flick that'll earn the adoration of Mario fanatics, video game enthusiasts, cinephiles, and more casual observers. Even better, it's everything I wanted from a Mario film: a bright, inventive, funny, richly detailed, feel-good, and incredibly entertaining movie that truly captures the spirit of Nintendo's iconic gaming franchise.

A new kind of Mario Odyssey

Mario prepares to pounce in his cat costume in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

The Super Mario Bros. Movie follows Mario (Chris Pratt) and Luigi (Charlie Day), inseparable Brooklyn-based brothers trying to get their plumbing startup off the ground.

While tackling a particularly big job, the siblings are unwittingly transported to another universe via a warp pipe. Along the way, Mario and Luigi become separated – Mario landing in the Mushroom Kingdom, and Luigi in the Dark Lands. Determined to be reunited with his younger brother, Mario enlists the help of the fearless Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), plucky and adventure-seeking Toad (Keegan-Michael Key), and stubborn but strong Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) to find Luigi, who's been imprisoned by the power-hungry and maniacally ambitious Bowser (Jack Black).

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a Rainbow Road joy ride

The fire-breathing King of the Koopas seeks the Super Star, an item of unrivaled power that will aid his quest to become the tyrannical ruler of the Mushroom Kingdom and its neighboring realms. Mario and his friends, then, will have to pluck up the courage to not only save Luigi, but the entire world. No pressure, everyone.

Bowser laughs as he acquires the Super Star in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Despite its title, The Super Mario Bros. Movie doesn't actually introduce its lead stars in its first act. The film's opening sequence is devoted to Bowser and his search for the Super Star – essentially, it's a longer version of the scene we witnessed in the movie's first trailer. Mario-less it may be, but it's nonetheless a great opening to the film. It lays the foundations for the film's joke-centric vibe, and sells the extraordinary threat that Bowser and his army pose to this part of the Mario multiverse (more on this later).

That menacing tonality is aided by Bowser being voiced by someone as charismatic, and as humorously fiendish, as Black. The multi-talented entertainer is the star of the show (pun intended) as he plumbs (also pun intended) new depths of the multifaceted Bowser. As recent Mario games have shown, Bowser is more than a one-dimensional villain who's hellbent on world domination. He's a complex antagonist with his own insecurities, and Black does a stellar job of threading the needle between Bowser's ferocious, self-conscious, and uproarious personas. Black's Bowser commands a spine-tingling air of authority, with the actor's bellowing vocals amplifying the character's already expressive facial features and demeanor.

Mario, Peach, Donkey Kong, Toad, and Kranky Kong ride their karts in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

But enough of the movie's primary antagonist – what about our heroes? And, more importantly, is Pratt's Mario voice actually as lousy as we suggested when The Super Mario Bros. Movie 's first trailer was released?

Thankfully, no. The Guardians of the Galaxy star's take on the iconic character – one who's been voiced by Charles Martinet in the games since 1991 – isn't as disconcerting as the teaser footage makes out. Initially, it's a little off-putting, particularly when Pratt attempts to replicate Martinet's voice in an amusing, meta-esque commercial that Mario and Luigi make to promote their plumbing business early in the film. It's an unpalatable impression but, once Pratt's Brooklyn-inspired accent is engaged, it blends well with the amiable, assertive, and at-times anxious tonality he brings to the legendary character.

The supporting cast could have done with more thematic exploration and character development

After emerging from Mario's shadow in recent years – largely thanks to the Year of Luigi in 2013 – it's a tad disappointing that Mario's sibling receives limited screen time here. Luigi's small-scale character arc won't appease fans of the green clothes-wearing Nintendo figure, but the overall development he receives, plus his eventual importance to the plot – there's a reason why this film is called The Super Mario Bros. Movie – ends up being sufficient. The addition of a spooky, Luigi's Mansion -influenced sequence, which sees Luigi chased by a group of whimsically menacing Dry Bones, also makes for satisfying viewing.

Pleasingly, Taylor-Joy's Peach is given more to do than in early Mario games, too. The Mushroom Kingdom's leader is more than just another female character in need of rescuing, although there's a crowd-pleasing "the princess is in another castle" joke for fans of a certain disposition. Taylor-Joy imbues Peach with a quiet confidence and bravery in keeping with her royal station – and, even more delightfully, she actually gets some of the best action sequences in the whole movie. Peach's backstory would have benefitted from some additional plot exposition, though – as it is, it's largely skipped over all too briefly.

Bob-omb blows and Easter eggs galore

Donkey Kong smirks as he holds two barrels in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Truth be told, The Super Mario Bros. Movie 's supporting cast could all have done with a bit more thematic exploration and/or greater character development.

Sure, it's primarily a kid's movie, so a deep dive into each individual's motivation, history, and other important plot-based elements might be deemed superfluous. But, with its brisk runtime of 92 minutes, an additional scene or two expanding upon specific characters' vulnerabilities or backstories wouldn't have gone amiss. An extended sequence of Mario and Donkey Kong bonding over their inability to impress their fathers, for instance, would have tugged at the heartstrings, while allowing Key's comedic background to really shine through in Toad, too, wouldn't have impacted the film's duration.

In fact, the biggest criticism I can level at The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the breeziness of its plot. Like a fast-paced Mario Kart race, it hurries along at breakneck pace, especially early on, as the movie double-dashes towards the crux of its story. In some ways, that's a good thing – as a viewer, you're not asked to sit through middling or unnecessary story beats and scenes that could have been cut from the final product. On the other hand, the manner in which the film hurtles through its opening act makes it feel occasionally rushed.

Taylor-Joy imbues Peach with a quiet confidence and bravery

Once The Super Mario Bros. Movie settles into an evenly paced film, it's a Rainbow Road joy ride that just asks you to find every Easter egg and secrets to Mario 's game series, as well as games starring his contemporaries.

Some call backs are more obvious than others – the aforementioned Rainbow Road, the cringe-inducing Donkey Kong Rap, Cheep Cheep bridge, appearances from King Bob-omb and King Boo, and fire and ice flowers being five such additions. Others, such as a near-identical replica of World 1-1 from 1985's Super Mario Bros. game in one side-scrolling-inspired sequence, will only be noticeable to the expertly trained eye. Indeed, the game series' side-scrolling elements lend themselves perfectly to The Super Mario Bros. Movie , with each sequence bringing a brilliant and unexpected degree of verticality to proceedings. See if you can pick out which characters Mario's original voice actor Charles Martinet plays here, too, before the credits roll.

Luigi tries to hold off an army of Dry Bones in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Fans of the game franchise's instantly recognizable music won't be disappointed, either. Unsurprisingly, original composer Koji Kondo's score is threaded through The Super Mario Bros. Movie – it wouldn't be a proper Mario movie without it, after all. Film composer Brian Tyler also finds a delicate balance between honoring Kondo's work and introducing original motifs; a musical marriage that's equal parts harmonious and rhythmical.

The addition of iconic 80s songs, such as Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out for a Hero and A-ha's Take on Me , serve as further nods to the era Mario and his fellow gaming icons were born in. Oh, and if you were holding out hope for numbers from the musically talented members of the movie's cast, such as Key and Black, you'll be pleasantly surprised. Bowser's ditty, in particular, will draw plenty of laughs.

The greatest compliment I can pay to The Super Mario Bros. Movie is that I couldn't stop smiling throughout its runtime. It's a highly enjoyable, nostalgia-fueled family-friendly film stuffed with visually arresting imagery, slapstick gags, countless secrets, and a rich thematic heart. Frankly, it's just wonderful to see a good Mario movie get made – one that superbly pays homage to Nintendo's legendary franchise, and Mario's legacy in the video game space.

It's also a film that only scratches the surface of the game series' untapped potential from a cinematic universe perspective. There are many directions that a Mario film series could go in – as one of The Super Mario Bros. Movie 's post-credits scenes teases, Nintendo, Universal, and Illumination seem to have an idea of where to take the movie series next – and whichever direction that is, I'll be there, rooting for them to deliver another first-rate Mario movie. Off the back of this flick, you can bet all of your gold, red, and blue coins on them succeeding, too.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie debuts in theaters on April 5.

The Cast of 'The Super Mario Bros Movie': All About the Voice Actors

Here's everything to know about the star-studded cast who brought the Super Mario Bros. world to the big screen

The Super Mario Bros. Movie premiered on April 7, 2023, and Mario and Luigi collected a ton of coins. The film scored the top opening of all time for an animated film with $377 million in worldwide ticket sales.

The movie follows Mario and the gang as they try to stop Bowser from taking over the world. On top of being based on the Super Mario Bros. games, other Nintendo series like Mario Kart , Luigi's Mansion and Donkey Kong Country were also used for inspiration.

First announced in 2021, the animated movie was able to attract a fantastic all-star cast thanks to Mario's popularity and the support from Nintendo. Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto said at the time that he and the company were excited to collaborate with Chris Pratt , Anya-Taylor Joy , Jack Black and more on the project.

But this isn't the first Super Mario Bros. movie. Back in 1993, a live-action Mario film was released starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo. Instead of being bright and colorful like the games, the movie was gritty and had a '90s punk-infused underground setting. The vibe of the new film is much closer to the video games, complete with a colorful, animated world and a setting that's inspired directly by the Mushroom Kingdom.

Here's everything to know about the stars voicing Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach and more in The Super Mario Bros. Movie .

Chris Pratt as Mario

Chris Pratt , 43, will be leading the cast as the main video game character Mario.

Prior to joining the cast, Pratt starred in numerous blockbuster franchises like Jurassic World and Guardians of the Galaxy . But before becoming an action hero, Pratt's first major role was Andy Dwyer in all seven seasons of NBC's Parks and Recreation from 2009 to 2015.

Initially, there was controversy over Pratt's casting, with some fans saying the voice actor behind Mario should have Italian heritage (like the game character). John Leguizamo, who played Luigi in the 1993 film, even spoke out and criticized the studio for not casting a person of color . However, the producers quickly defended Pratt , saying he's done a fantastic job at bringing Mario to life.

The actor admitted on an episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show that there were some challenges to the role because of how little is actually known about Mario as a character, saying, "These characters are just kind of avatars for the player … so how are we gonna flesh out the character, and who is this guy? What world does he live in? How can we tell a 90-minute-long story about the character that everybody knows, but they don't really know his story."

Outside of his career, Pratt is currently married to Katherine Schwarzenegger , daughter of actor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver . The couple have two children together , Lyla and Eloise. Pratt also has a son, Jack , with his former wife, actress Anna Faris .

Later in 2023, Pratt will star in Guardians of the Galaxy Pt. 3 . In 2024, he's set to lead the voice cast of Garfield , based on the famous comic, alongside Samuel L. Jackson and Ving Rhames .

Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach

Anya Taylor-Joy , 26, will portray Princess Peach, monarch of the Mushroom Kingdom.

The actress is best known for her Golden Globe-winning role in The Queen's Gambit (2020), as well as starring in movies like The Menu (2022) and the 2020 adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma .

Princess Peach was the classic damsel in distress throughout most of the game series. But in the film, Peach takes on a new, more empowered role, helping Mario rescue his brother, Luigi, and save the Mushroom Kingdom.

While appearing on the Inside Total Film podcast , Taylor-Joy said of the character, "From the very first meeting that the creators and I had about her, I was really impressed and excited by the fact that we were all on the same page as to who Peach should be in this new era. When I first saw the film, I came out so unbelievably excited and quite moved that this is now somebody that kids could have as a role model, and that this is what female leadership is. This is how we're presenting female leadership. I just felt so proud to be a part of that."

During an interview with MTV , Taylor-Joy admitted she was never a big gamer, but after scoring the role of Princess Peach she and her friends decided to play through the Mario games. She also admitted her new favorite way to play games is at the arcade, calling herself a "hardcore adult arcade individual."

Outside of acting, Taylor-Joy is dating Malcolm McRae , an indie musician who is part of the duo More*, alongside former Portugal. The Man drummer, Kane Ritchotte. The couple also share the same birthday , both being born on April 16. To celebrate their joint birthdays in 2022, Taylor-Joy posted photos of them together on Instagram with the caption, "16.04.94 ♾ 16.04.96," referencing their birth dates.

Next up, Taylor-Joy will star in Furiosa , a Mad Max prequel that centers around a young Imperator Furiosa, the character portrayed by Charlize Theron in 2015's Mad Max: Fury Road . The actress will star alongside Chris Hemsworth in the film.

Charlie Day as Luigi

Charlie Day, 47, plays Luigi, Mario's green-clad twin who ends up getting captured by Bowser.

Day is best known for portraying Charlie Kelly on It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia and has had starring roles in movies like Horrible Bosses (2011) and Pacific Rim (2013). He's also done some voice acting in the past alongside his Super Mario Bros. costar Pratt, as both actors star in The Lego Movie franchise together.

During an interview on The Kelly Clarkson Show , Day said he was perfect for the role of Luigi because of his voice, saying, "I have a hard time not sounding like a cartoon character."

In early 2022, he also told Jimmy Kimmel how secretive the plot of The Super Mario Bros. Movie was , telling the host, "I'm playing Luigi. In fact, I was just recording that this morning and I'd love to tell you all about it but they're top secret about this stuff … I know nothing, I show up and they say: 'You say this, and you say that.' "

In 2006, the actor married actress Mary Elizabeth Ellis , who It's Always Sunny fans will recognize as The Waitress from the series.

Day's next project will be Fool's Paradise , a movie he wrote, directed, produced and starred in. The film will center around a man (Day) who gets discovered by a Hollywood publicist and is suddenly launched to fame overnight. Day attracted an all-star ensemble cast for the film including John Malkovich , Adrien Brody , Kate Beckinsale , Edie Falco and Jason Bateman .

Jack Black as Bowser

Comedy legend Jack Black, 53, is taking on the role of Bowser, the evil Koopa King who wants to conquer the Mushroom Kingdom.

The role is a massive departure for Black who rarely plays the antagonist in movies and is instead known for his comedic performances in films like School of Rock (2003), Kung Fu Panda (2008) and Shallow Hal (2001).

Black never saw his role as villainous though, telling Kelly Clarkson that he thought Bowser was "the bad boy of this movie." He continued, "It's like metal. He's the hardest-rocking character. I could connect to it right away."

Rocking out is nothing new to Black who, on top of being an actor, is also in the Grammy-winning parody metal duo Tenacious D , alongside Kyle Glass.

During a Q&A session at Comic-Con, Black even said his rock career helped him create the Bowser character. According to NintendoLife , he reportedly said to a fan, "I did bring some of my heavy metal roots because, in a way, Bowser is kind of like a heavy metal rock star. You know, a big, strong and scary rock star."

Black has been married to artist Tanya Haden since 2006 and the couple have two children together. Black also has numerous family members who are notable in the scientific fields. His mother was Judith Love Cohen, a famous aerospace engineer who worked on the Apollo space program and the Hubble Telescope, and his half-brother is Neil Siegel, a prominent computer scientist known for inventing technologies that furthered wireless internet and GPS systems for the U.S. military and consumer smartphones.

Next up, Black will reprise his role as Po in the upcoming Kung Fu Panda 4 and will voice Claptrap in the highly-anticipated film adaptation of Borderlands , where he'll star alongside Jamie Lee Curtis , Cate Blanchett , Kevin Hart , and Cheyenne Jackson .

Keegan-Michael Key as Toad

Comedian and actor Keegan-Michael Key , 52, is taking on the role of Toad, the most well-known resident of the Mushroom Kingdom. In most of the games, Toad is an NPC (non-playable character) and rarely has a major role in the plot, so it's still unknown what role he'll have in the film.

When speaking with Fandango , Key gave some insight into what he thinks Toad wants and how he brought the character to life, saying, "I think he's been looking for an adventure in his life, I think he's been wanting to be the guy who could step up and help Princess Peach … he wants something to protect, he wants his life to have some kind of meaning."

Before taking on his role in The Super Mario Bros. Movie , Key was best known for starring alongside Jordan Peele in the sketch series Key and Peele (2012-2015) , which went on to win two Emmys and a Peabody Award. He currently stars in the Apple TV+ series Schmigadoon! and has numerous voice acting credits in movies like Toy Story 4 (2019) and the 2022 adaptation of Pinocchio .

In 2018, Key married Elisa Pugliese , who now goes by Elle Key. She's a producer and actress who has worked with her husband on numerous projects including his game shows Brain Games and Game On! .

Key is also set to star in Wonka , a prequel to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where Timothy Chalamet will take on the titular role and play a young Willy Wonka.

Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong

Seth Rogen , 40, will portray Donkey Kong, the barrel-throwing ape who was originally Mario's enemy in the classic arcade game. But throughout the years, DK has transformed from antagonist to protagonist, starring in his own popular game series, Donkey Kong Country . In the movie, Donkey Kong and Mario begin as adversaries but eventually team up to defeat Bowser.

During a video announcement at a Nintendo Direct event in 2022, Rogen shared that he's a huge Nintendo fan and even named his dog Zelda. He's also always wanted to be in a Mario movie, saying, "I remember looking at Mario Bros. and thinking, if they ever make a movie out of this, I better be in it, and I'm happy to say that dream came true."

Rogen is best known for his comedic performances and has starred in tons of blockbuster comedies like Knocked Up (2007), Superbad (2007) and Neighbors (2014). In 2022, he was nominated for an Emmy thanks to his role in Pam & Tommy . On top of acting, Rogen regularly serves as a producer and writer for many of his films.

He is also known for his love of cannabis and he even created a home goods brand called Houseplant that sells ashtrays, lighters and more, all with a mid-century design. When speaking to PEOPLE about the brand, Rogen said, "I'm of the belief that weed is one of the best things in the world. So to that end, I think it deserves nice things to go along with it."

The actor is married to comedian Lauren Miller Rogen , who starred in and co-wrote the film For a Good Time Call… (2012) and had minor roles in moves like 50/50 (2011). Her mother was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's at the age of 55, turning the couple into vocal advocates for Alzheimer's research and care. In 2012, Rogen and his wife created the non-profit Hilarity for Charity to raise money for families whose careers and incomes are impacted by caring for relatives with Alzheimer's.

Rogen is also set to do a lot more voice work: He is starring in numerous upcoming animated sequels like Kung Fu Panda 4 , Sausage Party: Foodtopia and Mufasa: The Lion King .

Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong

Character actor Fred Armisen , 56, will play Cranky Kong, Donkey Kong's grandfather.

So far, very little has been seen of Cranky's role in the movie, but in the games, he's a cantankerous and grumpy old ape who spits out blistering one-liners and constantly (and hilariously) critiques DK and the rest of the Kong crew.

Aside from voicing the Kong elder, Armisen is best known for his 11 seasons on Saturday Night Live (2002-2013) and his sketch comedy series Portlandia (2011-2018). Armisen also stars in various series like Documentary Now! (2015-2022) and is the band leader for Late Night with Seth Meyers .

On top of acting, Armisen has a long career in punk rock. Before he got started in Hollywood, he was a member of the punk band Trenchmouth that formed in the late '80s.

Armisen's first marriage was to indie English singer Sally Timms in 1998. After their divorce in 2002, he began dating The Handmaid's Tale star, Elisabeth Moss . The two were married from 2009 to 2011. After their divorce, Moss said the marriage was "extremely traumatic and awful and horrible." Shortly after, Armisen appeared on The Howard Stern Show , telling the host, "I was a terrible husband."

Most recently, Armisen was in a long-term relationship with actress Natasha Lyonne until 2022 when Lyonne confirmed they had split . However, she says the two remain good friends, telling The Hollywood Reporter , "We love each other just about as much as two people can love each other and we're still talking all the time."

Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamet

Fanboy extraordinaire Kevin Michael Richardson, 58, will play Kamet, a wizard Koopa who helps Bowser. Kamet is one of the main antagonists in the Yoshi games and also appears in the Mario Kart and Mario Party series. In the movie, he'll be one of Bowser's main henchmen.

Richardson is one of Hollywood's most accomplished voice actors and is extremely popular in the fandom world. He's known for voicing characters in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005-2008), Adventure Time (2010-2016), Kim Possible (2002-2007), Family Guy (1999-Present) and is currently the voice of Dr. Hibbert on The Simpsons . He also lends his voice to Toad in the upcoming animated Apple TV+ series Frog and Toad , an adaptation of the beloved 1970s children's book series.

Outside of film and television, Richardson also has a lofty career voicing video game characters and has been featured in gaming franchises like Star Wars , Halo , Kingdom Hearts and Baldur's Gate .

He's married to fellow voice actor and filmmaker Monica Richardson. She has two children from a previous marriage.

Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike

Comedian Sebastian Maniscalco, 49, will be playing Mario and Luigi's boss, Spike. Many viewers likely haven't heard of Spike before. The character was introduced in Wrecking Crew , a 1984 arcade game that was a spin-off of Donkey Kong (the first game to feature Mario). Wrecking Crew was released the year before Super Mario Bros. would launch on the Nintendo Entertainment System (Famicom), turning the plumbing twins into a global sensation.

Maniscalco is most known for his career as a stand-up comedian and spent years doing shows at The Comedy Store, Los Angeles's famous comedy club on the Sunset Strip. In recent years, Maniscalco has also landed numerous stand-up specials on Netflix, including Stay Hungry and Is It Me? .

While speaking to PEOPLE in 2018, Maniscalco stated that he's always loved comedy and that being a stand-up comedian was his dream, saying, "I loved making my family laugh, and I wasn't watching cartoons when I was a kid. I would watch Johnny Carson with my father … I told myself it was comedy or bust."

Off stage, Maniscalco is married to abstract artist Lana Gomez. The couple have been married since 2013 and have two children, a daughter and a son.

Maniscalco will take on the biggest role of his career this summer when he stars in About My Father . Based on Maniscalco's real life, the actor will star alongside Robert De Niro , who plays his traditional Italian father that decides to join him on a weekend retreat with his girlfriend's family.

Does it help to be a fan of the games?

You don’t have to be a Mario fan to respond to it, but the film is going to remind the millions who are why they call it a joystick. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety

Is it mostly for kids?

From its very first scenes, it’s clear The Super Mario Bros. Movie is made for children. – Germain Lussier, io9.com

Even if it’s not your thing, everyone should find a way to coexist with this franchise very quickly. – Christian Zilko, IndieWire

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

How does it look?

This is a gorgeous movie. The 3D animation works extremely well. It is bright, vibrant, and colorful. – Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky
The film looks gorgeous… The attention to the world-building is perhaps the film’s best achievement, constructing an entire universe that feels colorful and unique compared to anything else in recent film. – Brandon Zachary, CBR
I was pleasantly surprised how the bright colors and crisp visuals expanded the Super Mario universe to the big screen in a fresh, exciting way. – Christie Cronan, Raising Whasians
The different worlds of the film—the Mushroom Kingdom, the Jungle Kingdom, Bowser’s Kingdom, and more—are all so rich and full of life. – Lex Briscuso, The Wrap
Stunningly beautiful… The movie might work even better if you could mute it, pause, and zoom around its designs. – Germain Lussier, io9.com
While the animation is crisp, it’s not enough to overcome the film’s many deficiencies in every other aspect of its composition. – Sean Mulvihill, Mulviews
It’s visually bland in ways that reminded me of European knockoff animations. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

What about the script?

Parents shouldn’t expect a Pixar-level experience, but Matthew Fogel’s script has as at least as much narrative heft as the best Mario games. – Christian Zilko, IndieWire
Fogel is asked to juggle an insane amount of elements here, and yet, he’s able to make all these parts come together in a satisfying way. – Ross Bonaime, Collider
The plot is as basic as can be, and character development is clearly not a priority. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
It might not have the depth of something like Turning Red , Wolfwalkers , or Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio but it’s not trying to. – Brandon Zachary, CBR
When it comes to molding all that gimcrackery into, you know, a story, they lose the electronic pulse that made the game addictive. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety
It is very formulaic and was clearly made so that even the youngest fan can understand and enjoy it. – Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky
A lot of the film’s jokes don’t land, at least for an adult audience, which will certainly make up a vast group for this picture. – Lex Briscuso, The Wrap
The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels as if Fogel was handed a list of iconic video game elements and was told to reverse engineer them into a barebones story. – Sean Mulvihill, Mulviews

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

Do any of the voice performances stand out?

One of the film’s biggest MVPs is Keegan Michael-Key’s Toad, who is responsible for half of the movie’s most comedic moments. – Lex Briscuso, The Wrap
Jack Black, who voices this horny demon [Bowser], gives a stupendous performance. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety
The real standout here is Jack Black as Bowser. His penchant for the grandiose makes him the perfect choice for the character. – Ross Bonaime, Collider
Jack Black as Bowser is one of his best performances ever. My favorite character hands down. – Christie Cronan, Raising Whasians

So it has a good villain?

Having a villain who’s a vulnerable ogre you’re at once appalled, amused, and fascinated by makes this a very different sort of kinetic kiddie fantasia. – Owen Gleiberman, Variety
He’s the full package: menacing and vicious with a soft and insecure side that bubbles over at the perfect comedic moment. – Lex Briscuso, The Wrap
Black’s performance makes Bowser more than just a villain to be toppled. – Ross Bonaime, Collider

The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023)

What about Chris Pratt’s work as Mario?

What Pratt does works. I promise you that. It makes sense and even if it bothers you at the beginning, you are going to quickly forget it as the movie continues. – Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky
Sorry to disappoint, but Pratt is a good choice for Mario, finding just the right amount of inflection for the character and without sounding like little more than a collection of the character’s famous lines. – Ross Bonaime, Collider
Pratt nails a modernized, slightly subdued version of a stereotypical Brooklyn accent that comes off natural and inoffensive, a logical portrayal of the Mario character. – Lex Briscuso, The Wrap
He’s not doing a terrible job so much as I’m not sure anyone really knows what the job is. – Reuben Baron, Looper.com

How is the length of the movie?

The brisk 92-minute running time is another plus, especially for younger attention spans. – Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporter
With a runtime of only 92 minutes, it doesn’t overstay its welcome. – Matthew Huff, AV Club
It’s a shame that the svelte 92-minute runtime means we don’t get much time to linger in this vibrant setting. – Fay Watson, Total Film

Will we want more Super Mario Bros. movies?

There are multiple hints at what could be coming next for the franchise. I just have my fingers crossed for more Luigi. – Tessa Smith, Mama’s Geeky
As far as I’m concerned, it’s Game Over. – Sean Mulvihill, Mulviews

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a rollicking CGI adventure that hilariously incorporates Nintendo's most popular characters . Childhood favorites run, jump, kick, and go-kart race through colorful, eye-popping worlds. A simple plot and blazing pace will keep youngsters enthralled; while darker themes and unexpected mature humor hits a bullseye for adult audiences. The voice actors seem initially miscast, but grow on you as the film progresses.

Mario (Chris Pratt) and his younger-by-seconds brother Luigi (Charlie Day) eagerly watch their first business commercial. They've quit their jobs as wrecking crew workers to become plumbers. A career change that's mercilessly mocked by their former boss (Sebastian Maniscalco) and unsupportive but equally mustachioed relatives. The brothers are used to being bullied and criticized. That doesn't stop them from pursuing their dreams.

A Chance for Redemption

Their first service call ends in unmitigated disaster. A massive water main break downtown offers a chance for redemption. The brothers can help the city and get great publicity as heroes. Their underground trip in the sewers leads to a labyrinthine maze of strange pipes. Mario turns around to see Luigi sucked away into a mysterious void.

Mario chases after his brother, but they get separated. He lands in the Mushroom Kingdom as poor Luigi's plopped down near a fiery and foreboding castle. Mario can't believe his first encounter. Toad (Keegan-Michael Key) warns that Luigi is in serious trouble. Bowser (Jack Black), the flame-breathing king of the turtle-like Koopas, has stolen a powerful weapon. His massive army and devious sorcerer (Kevin Michael Richardson) are on their way. Princess Peach (Anya Taylor-Joy), their strong and beautiful leader, can help Mario save Luigi. She has a plan to unite forces with the mighty gorillas of the Jungle Kingdom.

Bowser's Baddies

The Super Mario Bros. Movie covers a lot of ground in quick fashion. Princess Peach puts Mario through a first act training course to prepare him for the battle to come. He learns that question mark blocks have good and bad surprises. Certain mushrooms increase size and strength; while others have nasty effects. The fire flower is especially useful against Bowser's baddies. Super Mario has the weapons to fight, but he already possesses the most important trait; the courage to stand up to bullies.

The film looks amazing. Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic ( Teen Titans Go! To the Movies ) vary perspectives as the characters journey through vibrant but familiar landscapes. These aren't side-scrolling escapades. Mario and Donkey Kong (Seth Rogen) chase each other on acrophobia-inducing elevated platforms. They whiz past gnarly Koopas in a spectacular, gravity-defying rainbow racetrack. The filmmakers successfully recreate the games' best settings. I spent countless hours as a kid playing Nintendo and Super Nintendo. You can't help but smile seeing treasured memories come to life.

Chris Pratt voicing Mario felt like an odd choice. It's hard to quantify the character, though most people probably imagine Mario as sounding older. This is probably because Bob Hoskins (RIP) played Mario in the terrible live-action adaptation . The decision was made to portray Mario and Luigi as younger, though. Thankfully, the millennial Mario Brothers don't have a cheesy Italian accent.

A Blockbuster Adaptation

Jack Black steals the show as Bowser. No spoilers here but the filmmakers smartly played to his talents. He's ridiculously funny and adds tremendous energy to a breezy narrative. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a blockbuster on screen and the box office. Stick around during and after the credits.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is a production of Universal Pictures, Nintendo, and Illumination. It will have a theatrical release on April 5th from Universal Pictures .

The Super Mario Bros. Movie Jumps Into the Billion Dollar Club

They always said that plumbing was a reliable trade.

A new movie character is crossing the threshold and joining the billion dollar club, and he says, “It’s a-me, Mario!” Universal Pictures’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie , produced in conjunction with animation studio Illumination and video game stalwarts Nintendo, will officially raise the flag (or rescue the princess, or gain mushroom power, or whichever Mario-related metaphor you like) sometime this weekend, as per The Hollywood Reporter . Who knows, if you get in the car right now and drive to the local multiplex and buy a ticket, it could be you that puts the mustachioed computer-generated li’l adventurer over the top!

If the line is crossed on Sunday, as anticipated, it will be after just 26 days in release. It will be the 10th animated movie to have accrued this much coin, and the 52nd film to enter this exclusive group.

The most recent title to hit the billion-dollar mark was Avatar: The Way of Water , which is still out there scooping up cash in its net. It grossed over $800,000 domestically last week, its 19th week of release. That’s almost twice as much as Kelly Reichardt ’s Showing Up made in total over its first three weeks, and Showing Up is a masterpiece. Yes, yes, apples and oranges, but sometimes the differentials are extraordinary.

Since we’re snooping around the billionaires club, let’s see what else we can learn. According to Rotten Tomatoes’ binary metric , the most popular film with critics in this elite circle is actually a tie between Toy Story 3 and Zootopia , which both have a 98 percent approval rating. Toy Story 4 is right on its heels for the bronze medal at 97 percent. Tom Cruise , Daniel Radcliffe , and Chadwick Boseman represent the highest-rated non-animated entries, with Top Gun: Maverick , Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part Two , and Black Panther all tied at 96 percent.

The lowest-rated five titles? Yeah, let’s do that—with all this dough, they can take the heat. Star Wars: Episode I—The Phantom Menace , a controversial picture, to say the least, has a 51 percent approval rating. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (a movie I kinda liked, actually) has 47 percent, Transformers: Dark of the Moon has 35 percent, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has 33 percent, and Jurassic World: Dominion has 29 percent. The cellar dweller, and deservedly so, is Transformers: Age of Extinction , with an abysmal 17 percent. It is also the only film in history to make a billion dollars and also includes a factually inaccurate statutory rape joke .

All the movies in the billionaires club are what we'd call “Hollywood productions” (through some, like Skyfall , are not American) but this cultural hegemony will not last forever. Chinese productions, which have only minimal releases in the United States, are getting very close to the magic number. The Battle of Lake Changjin , an intense war epic boasting three directors, topped out at $909 million. It also would have been the number one movie worldwide in 2021 had it not been for Spider-Man: No Way Home , a film that, coincidentally or maybe not coincidentally, was denied exhibition in China.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie was directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic , best known previously for the kids animated property Teen Titans Go! , which riffs on lesser-known characters from the DC Comics universe. The screenplay was written by Matthew Fogel, who wrote Minions: Rise of Gru , has a shared story by credit on The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part , and wrote the 2011 Martin Lawrence vehicle Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son . Voice talent in the cast includes Chris Pratt , Charlie Day , Anya-Taylor Joy , Keegan-Michael Key , and Seth Rogen .

Pratt is primed to jump from one mega-hit to another when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is released next week. As is the way with the GOTG pictures, it features a well-selected soundtrack of power pop hits, some of which are deep cuts. Indeed, in the very near future, more people will be exposed to the British post-punk band The The than ever before.

Opening weekend, here we come.

Reviews are officially in for Nintendo and Universal Pictures’ “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” which hits theaters Wednesday and has generated quite a bit of buzz leading up to its Easter-weekend release.

The animated film based on the cherished video-game series of the same name boasts a star-studded voice cast, including Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong and Chris Pratt as Mario.

When the family flick was announced back in 2021, fans and social media users immediately questioned the decision to cast Pratt — who has been racking up credits in blockbuster movie franchises like item boxes in Mario Kart — as everyone’s favorite Italian plumber.

Review: ‘Wahoo!’ isn’t quite right for mildly amusing, hectic ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’

‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ starring Chris Pratt, is mildly amusing, swift, noisy and unrelentingly paced.

April 4, 2023

In her review for Tribune News Service, film critic Katie Walsh deemed Pratt and Day’s vocal performances as sibling duo Mario and Luigi “so unremarkable that it could have been anyone at all.”

“Fortunately, this loud, hectic movie doesn’t overstay its welcome, but it wouldn’t have the material to last a second longer,” Walsh writes .

“It’s bright, busy, inoffensive and exactly the opposite of the weird, dark, edgy 1993 movie adaptation. That may be better for the business of Mario, but it’s not exactly terribly interesting either.”

Here’s a sampling of reviews of “The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” ranging from “Oh, no!” to “Wahoo!”

“There are also plenty of Easter eggs to be enjoyed by gameplayers as well as humor that can be appreciated by adults ... and kids alike,” KiMi Robinson writes .

“Much credit goes to the cast for having so much fun with their characters; Charlie Day, for one, manages to infuse as much Charlie Day into Luigi as he does in any live action role. ... ‘The Super Mario Bros.’ is family-friendly movie theater catnip over the Easter weekend, and it’s sure to be an enjoyable watch for the average viewer.”

Associated Press

“It makes you ... want to play Mario,” Jake Coyle writes .

“As nice as it is to look at ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie,’ it’s not anywhere near as fun as it would be to play it. It’s a-him, Mario, but it’s no a-masterpiece. The storyline is only a touch above the interstitial bits of plot you usually get between gameplay. With the exception of Jack Black’s grandly lovesick Bowser ... there’s nothing here that deepens these characters beyond their usual 2-D adventures. Mario may be a modern-day Mickey Mouse but his kingdom is on the console.”

Entertainment Weekly

“It’s all quite fun, with a good sense of humor and a consistent computer-animated aesthetic — plus, at 90 minutes including credits, it’s short, sweet, and over before anything can get annoying,” Christian Holub writes .

“But it’s hard to escape the feeling, especially during the ... Rainbow Road sequence, that you would probably be having more fun just playing a game together instead.”

Hollywood Reporter

“After the debacle that was the 1993 live-action Super Mario Brothers movie adaptation, the creators of the new animated version clearly felt the need to restore the faith of the wildly popular video game’s legions of fans,” Frank Scheck writes .

“While devoted players will weigh in on whether the film fulfills that goal sufficiently, The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like a labor of love that should easily weather any nitpicking from purists. It should also prove a major cash cow for co-producers Nintendo, Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures, with sequels and spin-offs virtually guaranteed. While Matthew Fogel’s screenplay won’t win any awards, it builds a reasonable framework for the 90 minutes of nearly nonstop mayhem that ensues.”

Chris Pratt and wife Katherine Schwarzenegger pose together while smiling at a movie premiere

‘Broken’ Chris Pratt jokes about checking out Katherine Schwarzenegger in church

‘Super Mario Bros.’ star Chris Pratt opens up about meeting wife Katherine Schwarzenegger at a time when he felt ‘broken.’ The two connected quickly.

“The movie’s mostly excellent use of its source material does contrast with some ill-advised blockbuster animation tropes which can occasionally be grating,” Tom Jorgensen writes .

“Moments like this — as well as the frequent use of slo-mo to highlight jokes — are a bit too cute, and hint at how easily The Super Mario Bros. Movie could’ve slipped into ‘generic animated movie’ territory had it given way to more of these low-hanging stabs at making sure Uncle Jack has his ‘I understood that reference!’ moment, too.”

Independent

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie ... is nothing more and nothing less than what you’d expect from a Mario film,” Clarisse Loughrey writes .

“Its comfortable mediocrity is no better captured than in its choice to cast Chris Pratt — the current face of generic, easy-to-market heroism — in the starring role. Pratt, it should be said, is perfectly capable of the sort of outsized performance Mario needed, having previously turned in himbos of equal, puppyish élan in The Lego Movie and Guardians of the Galaxy. But the Pratt called upon here is of the blandly sincere, hire-a-hero variety, delivering lines like ‘let’s-a-go!’ and ‘mamma mia!’ with all the vigour of a contractual obligation and not a trace of Italian.”

“From the decision to cast the onetime Least Offensive Actor on the Planet Chris Pratt in the titular role to the production design that seems to be an exact replica the Wii-era Mario games, ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ largely plays things by the book, which is exactly what the assignment called for,” Christian Zilko writes .

“Co-directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic have delivered a perfectly serviceable movie that is going to make a lot of kids very happy and a lot of adults very rich.”

New York Times

“While the details are meticulous, the attitude is all wrong, trading the simple, unaffected charm that has served the character so well since his introduction in 1981 for a snarky and fatuous air that leans hard on winking humor and bland, hackneyed irony,” Calum Marsh writes .

“This is Mario in the Marvel mold: every line a punchline, every gag an arcane meta reference for the nerds who can’t get enough of that sort of thing. Served some spaghetti with mushrooms, Mario winces and says he hates mushrooms. Because in the game he’s always eating mushrooms, you see. Sound like fun yet?”

“There’s a perfect Mario game for nearly every kind of person — which gives the little plumber and his endless incarnations the sort of magical appeal that every modern movie franchise is desperate for,” Joshua Rivera writes . “Illumination’s animated adventure The Super Mario Bros. Movie attempts to bottle that appeal, but mostly just ends up referencing it. ... The Super Mario Bros. Movie feels like it’s made to be screenshotted more than watched. Nearly every frame is packed with a dizzying number of Easter eggs and references to Mario games and other Nintendo franchises.

“Cataloging them all might be the most enjoyable way to watch the movie, because when it comes to regular movie things like plot and character, well, all that gets blue-shelled to hell. (If you got that reference, you’ll probably like this movie more than the average viewer.)”

Screen Rant

“Black’s performance is truly what makes Bowser sing, ensuring every scene featuring the villain is one of the movie’s highlights. Beyond Black, Day is also pitch perfect as Luigi and Rogen is extremely fun as Donkey Kong. Taylor-Joy and Key are good, if unmemorable as Peach and Toad,” Molly Freeman writes .

“Pratt, whose casting as Mario was met with skepticism, doesn’t make a strong case for why he was a good choice to voice such an iconic character. He’s simply fine — not so bad as to be distracting, but not strong enough to be at all interesting either, which is about the same as The Super Mario Bros. Movie as a whole.”

“It’s going to be a huge, huge hit, but not just because of its beloved gamer pedigree. (That didn’t help “Super Mario Bros.” in 1993)” Owen Gleiberman writes .

“It’s because the movie, as directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic (from a script by Matthew Fogel), is a serious blast, with a spark of enchantment — that je ne sais quoi fusion of speed and trickery, magic and sophistication, and sheer play that … well, you feel it when you see it.”

Washington Post

“The artistry is enough to keep children and adults watching. It may help that Mario gains power by eating mushrooms — a good message about healthy eating, on the one hand, yet one with an obvious psychedelic resonance at the same time,” Pat Padua writes .

“At its 8-bit heart, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is ultimately about family. (You know, the people you spend time with when you’re not playing video games.)”

Here’s the First Trailer for the ‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ With Chris Pratt as Mario

It’s-a-here, Mario trailer: Nintendo and animation studio Illumination have shared the first teaser for Super Mario Bros . Movie , featuring the beloved video game mustachioed plumber as voiced by Chris Pratt .

The trailer opens with Bowser (voiced by Jack Black ) and his army of koopas invading an ice world inhabited by penguins, which the giant fire-breathing turtle — or dragon? whatever creature Bowser is — easily pummels and takes possession of one of those stars that makes Mario invincible for 30 seconds in the video game.

The action then cuts to Mario inexplicably being dumped in the Mushroom Kingdom, where he encounters Toad ( Keegan-Michael Key ) and some potentially lethal shrooms. For all the uproar about Pratt voicing the Italian-American plumber, the actor doesn’t sound too Pratt-y in his two lines of dialogue that are revealed in the trailer; Pratt doesn’t give Mario a cartoonish accent which is a positive, nor does he sound exactly like the lead character in The Lego Movie that he also voiced.

The preview ends with Luigi (Charlie Day) outrunning a bunch of skeleton koopas, or “Dry Bones,” as the MarioWiki refers to them.

As part of the Nintendo Direct presentation before the trailer’s unveiling, Pratt and Black spoke briefly about their roles. “Growing up, I spent hours of my life stomping koopa troopas,” Pratt said via video, adding that he used to play the Mario arcade game before it came to Nintendo. Black added that he learned to fire-breath like Bowser by taking lessons from Gene Simmons from Kiss.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie , out April 7 in theaters, boasts an all-star voice cast that includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Box Office Predictions for 2023: Will Tom Cruise, Super Mario and a Bear on Cocaine Save Movie Theaters?

2023 Box Office Preview

For the first time since the pandemic, there were  plenty of reasons to celebrate at the box office in 2022 ( “The Batman” !  “Top Gun” !  “Minions” !  “Black Panther” !  “Avatar” ! “Jurassic” !) — there just weren’t enough of them. Ticket sales were down over 30% from 2019’s pre-COVID benchmark, forcing most theater chains to continue their precarious dance along the precipice of bankruptcy . To put it plainly: Theaters need hits like their lives depend on it, because they do.

“ M3gan ” (Universal)

Current Release Date: Jan. 6 Thrill Factor: After a brutal two years at the movies, M3gan (an acronym for Model 3 Generative Android, obviously) is more than the hero that cinemas need, it’s the hero they deserve. The artificial intelligence doll became an instant viral sensation after Universal dropped the first trailer, in which the pint-sized agent of chaos threw down some killer dance moves before unleashing terror on her owners. Blumhouse knows M3gan is the meme that keeps on giving. Chill Factor: January tends to be a box office dead zone. Verdict: M3gan (the doll) is an icon, she is a legend, and she is the moment . Don’t expect the modestly budgeted “M3gan” (the movie) to become a chart-topping blockbuster, but it’s destined to be wildly profitable.

“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” (Disney)

“Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony)

Current Release Date: June 2 Thrill Factor: “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was a game-changing sensation, an Oscar-winning animated movie aimed at teens and adults that made the multiverse a thing before Marvel Studios got its hands on it. Five years later, the sequel looks to build on that success with an even more eye-popping adventure, featuring Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, Issa Rae as Spider-Woman, Daniel Kaluuya as Spider-Punk, and dozens more Spider-People besides. Chill Factor: People could suddenly decide they’re sick of Spider-Man? ( Really stretching here.) Verdict: “Into” is considered by many fans to be the best Spidey film ever; “Across” could live up to that reputation and then some.

“Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” (Paramount)

Current Release Date: July 14 Thrill Factor: After “Top Gun: Maverick,” the enduring blockbuster smash of 2022, Tom Cruise has a new legion of fans to get excited about his death-defying stunts. And the seventh entry in the globe-trotting franchise promises Cruise’s most dangerous antics yet. With good reason, there aren’t any movie stars doing it like him. Chill Factor: Any sequel, especially the seventh installment in a 27-year-old series, is wont to experience diminishing returns. Verdict: Tom Cruise fever is alive and well, which will take the series to new box office heights. “Dead Reckoning – Part One” could even become the first in the franchise to hit the coveted billion-dollar mark.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal)

Current Release Date: April 7 Thrill Factor: There is arguably no more recognizable hero in video games than Mario — Nintendo has reportedly sold over 770 million copies across the franchise’s sprawling ecosystem of titles since 1985. But the company has never sanctioned an animated movie featuring the playful Italian plumber and his coterie of compatriots and adversaries until now. Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto has overseen the film as a lead producer, with hit factory Illumination handling the production. Chill Factor: The last “Super Mario Bros.” movie was released in 1993, starred Bob Hoskins as Mario and John Leguizamo as Luigi, and was a live-action disaster — one of a litany of spectacularly failed feature film adaptations of massively popular video games. The decision to cast notable non-Italian Chris Pratt as Mario has also whipped up the internet into a tizzy. Verdict: It’s-a me! A huge hit!

“ Fast X ” (Universal)

“The Little Mermaid” (Disney)

Current Release Date: May 26 Thrill Factor: As Disney has revisited its vault, live-action adaptations of its animated musicals — like “Beauty and the Beast,” “The Lion King” and “Aladdin” — have thrived at the box office agnostic of reviews. And Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel in the new take on “The Little Mermaid,” has the vocal chops needed to revive the anthem “Part of Your World,” while her co-stars Melissa McCarthy and Daveed Diggs should breathe new life into classics like “Poor Unfortunate Souls” and “Under the Sea.” Chill Factor: Some of Disney’s most recent remakes missed the mark, with “Mulan” and “Dumbo” failing to resonate despite brand recognition. Plus, films aimed at family audiences have struggled to rebound at the box office. Verdict: The trolls won’t win , and “The Little Mermaid” will join the pantheon of successful Disney revivals.

“ Barbie ” (Warner Bros.)

Current Release Date: July 21 Thrill Factor: No offense, M3gan, but Barbie is one of the most famous dolls in the world. With Margot Robbie as the plastic, fantastic toy and Ryan Gosling as her sidekick Ken, along with the stacked cast of Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Issa Rae and Helen Mirren, and a teaser that parodies “2001: A Space Odyssey,” expectations are high that director Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” will change the world. Chill Factor: There’s plenty of mystery around “Barbie,” including the plot of the film, and in the hands of two indie favorites and mumblecore icons, Gerwig and her partner and co-writer Noah Baumbach, it’s probably not for children who actually play with the doll. Will parents of young kids be confused by its target audience? Also, Gerwig’s frequent collaborator Saoirse Ronan couldn’t be in the movie due to scheduling conflicts , so that’s a bummer. Verdict: As long as “Barbie” delivers the goods — and let’s be real, when has Gerwig ever missed? — it’ll be one of today’s rare movies to resonate with older audiences… and all without the help of explosive stunts or superheroes. (Probably.)

QUESTION MARKS

“Cocaine Bear” (Universal)

Current Release Date: Feb. 24 Thrill Factor: The movie is about a bear that does cocaine. Chill Factor: It’s oh, so hard to get people to care about anything that doesn’t involve comic books or Tom Cruise. Verdict: The movie is about a bear that does cocaine .

“Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves “ (Paramount)

“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” (Lionsgate)

Current Release Date: Nov. 17 Thrill Factor: “The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes” returns audiences to Panem for the first time in nearly 10 years. Plus, Thanksgiving has been prime time to launch the other movies in the $2.9 billion-dollar grossing “Hunger Games” series. Chill Factor: Without Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen, will audiences care about the post-apocalyptic nation and its inhabitants? The prequel story, featuring Tom Blyth as a young Coriolanus Snow and Rachel Zegler as tribute Lucy Gray Baird, takes place over a half-a-century before the girl on fire took the diabolical Hunger Games by storm. It’s always a risk when moviegoers already know how a story is generally going to conclude. Verdict: The book has generated positive reviews, so the pressure is on director Francis Lawrence — who successfully shepherded the prior installments to the big screen — to recapture the magic. May the odds be ever in his favor.

“Wonka” (Warner Bros.)

Current Release Date: Dec. 15 Thrill Factor: There are few children’s characters more beloved — across many generations — than eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka, from Roald Dahl’s seminal novel “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” And there are few young stars with a more dedicated following than Timothée Chalamet, who stars in this prequel to Dahl’s novel about Wonka’s early days before opening his magical candy factory, alongside a satisfying and delicious supporting cast including Olivia Colman, Keegan-Michael Key, Rowan Atkinson, Sally Hawkins, Natasha Rothwell and Jim Carter. Chill Factor: This is a musical with a roughly $125 million budget at a time when execution-dependent family movies have increasingly fraught prospects (e.g.: “Strange World,” “Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile”). And, not to put too fine a point on this, but, despite a few examples of shaky-if-confident singing, Chalamet’s best known “musical” performance so far is his infamous 2012 gig as young up-and-coming rap star Timmy Tim . Verdict: Opening over the holidays seems like a smart play, but even more than “Dune,” “Wonka” will be the biggest test yet of Chalamet’s star power.

BIGGEST RISKS

“Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” (Paramount)

“The Flash” (Warner Bros.)

Current Release Date: June 16 Thrill Factor: Director Andy Muschietti is hot off of the “It” movies, Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck are returning as Batman, and the plot hinges on time travel and multiverses, two of the hottest things going in superhero storytelling. Studio insiders haven’t been this excited for Warner Bros. superhero movie since “The Dark Knight” movies. In fact, almost everything about “The Flash” points to a massive summer sensation. Almost. Chill Factor: Starting in 2020, “The Flash” star Ezra Miller has been an engine for disturbing headlines, including a video of the actor choking a woman outside a bar , arrests for harassment and assault , and multiple allegations of abuse . In August, the actor issued a general apology “to everyone that I have alarmed and upset with my past behavior,” faulting “complex mental health issues” and noting that they remain in “ongoing treatment.” That may have quelled the immediate storm, but to date, Miller’s “past behavior” is the only thing many people know about the actor — a terrible place to start for a studio that needs to sell its star as an aspirational superhero. Verdict: “The Flash” was once intended to help launch DC into a new storytelling frontier. With DC’s new leadership preparing a reboot on top of the controversy surrounding Miller, Warner Bros. now has a precarious high-wire promotional campaign ahead of it to get audiences to stop paying attention to its star’s past and focus instead on the movie they’re leading.

“Wish” (Disney)

Current Release Date: Nov. 22 Thrill Factor: There’s plenty of pedigree behind “Wish,” including “Frozen” masterminds Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck and “West Side Story” Oscar-winner Ariana DeBose. Chill Factor: For over a year, Disney has struggled , shockingly so, with successfully launching animated fare into theaters — even “Encanto” fizzled until it debuted on Disney+. Moreover, “Wish” tells the story of how the wishing star that so many Disney characters have wished upon came to be. With zero competition, it’s the most confusing logline since “Lightyear,” the origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the intergalactic hero who starred in the movie that inspired Andy’s action figure in “Toy Story.”  Verdict: “Wish” needs a “Let It Go”-esque banger, a song so undeniably catchy that it’ll be on every parent’s Spotify wrapped , to bring families back to theaters again and again.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” (Apple, Paramount)

A new Super Mario Bros. movie is officially coming in 2026

The next Super Mario Bros. movie has a release date – and it's coming in 2026.

Nintendo boss Shigeru Miyamoto shared the news on Twitter last night. "Hello, this is Miyamoto. We will be broadcasting a Nintendo Direct tonight, but before that I would like to make an announcement," he wrote via Nintendo's account . "The release date for the new Super Mario animated movie in Japan has been set for April 24, 2026. We are working with the Illumination team to make it a fun movie, so please continue to look forward to it."

The first movie, released in 2023, sees the titular plumber (voiced by Chris Pratt) and his brother Luigi (Charlie Day) transported from Brooklyn to the Mushroom Kingdom as they find themselves on a mission to save both worlds from Bowser (Jack Black) and his army. The voice cast also includes Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong. No casting information for the next movie has been revealed yet.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie became the highest-grossing movie based on a video game and the third-highest-grossing animated movie of all time (behind The Lion King and Frozen 2 ). The film was also the second-highest-grossing movie of 2023, beaten only by Barbie at last year's box office.

The new Super Mario Bros. movie hits the big screen on April 24, 2026. In the meantime, check out our guide to the biggest upcoming movies on the way for the rest of this year.

Super Mario Bros Movie 2 Coming Next Year

The next Mario movie is coming.

Super Mario Bros Movie

Today’s Nintendo Direct announced a lot of new Mario titles, including a brand new Mario Party and a Mario and Luigi RPG, which are some big things coming to the Nintendo Switch before the new console releases hopefully next year. However, we got an announcment early on before the Nintendo Direct from Shigeru Miyamoto.

The first Super Mario Bros movie released in 2023, and it has officially been announced that we are getting a second movie. Chris Pratt definitely sold people on Mario even besides the controversy. In “Hello, this is Miyamoto. We will be broadcasting a  Nintendo Direct  tonight, but before that I would like to make an announcement the release date for the new Super Mario animated movie in Japan has been set for April 24, 2026. We are working with the Illumination team to make it a fun movie, so please continue to look forward to it.”

We don’t know who will be returning, but after the success of the past movie, that a lot of the main characters would be returning – otherwise it would not be a Mario movie. This includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Luigi played by Charlie Day, as well as Jack Black as Bowser, who last movie sang us a brand new song called “Peaches! Peaches! Peaches!” We could also see Anya Taylor-Joy returning as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong.

Furthermore, The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the highest paying movie based on a video game as well as the third highest-grossing movie of all time. The second Mario movie is set to release around April 24, 2026.

The Three-Body Problem

According to Deadline , Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou is attached to direct a new film adaptation—not a TV series this time!—of Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem .

They Follow

During a recent interview with Collider , Maika Monroe described the long-awaited sequel to It Follows as being “bigger, darker and more fucked up” than the original.

But as you know with the first film, I’m not taking any credit in this, David is brilliant. I mean, he is brilliant. The whole movie transformed at that point. It was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it . He’s very specific, turns down so many… He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first I’m like, “Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?” And I read it, and it’s just so fucking good. It’s so good. I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more fucked up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.

Fast X - Part 2
