Suivez sur France.tv le Tour de France Hommes et le Tour de France femmes.

Un an après la première victoire de Jonas Vingegaard, devant Tadej Pogacar, les coureurs retrouvent les routes de France mais pas seulement. Après le Danemark en 2022, le Tour de France s'élance cette année de l'Espagne et plus précisément de Bilbao. Après trois jours au Pays Basque (côté espagnol) les coureurs traverseront les Pyrénées avant de traverser le centre de la France pour filer dans les Alpes. Un seul contre-la-montre au programme (22 km) pour cette édition 2023, lors de la 16e étape, avant de conclure la Grande Boucle à Paris, sur les Champs-Elysées. 

Du 23 au 30 juillet 2023, ce sera au tour des femmes de s'élancer pour la deuxième édition de cette course de 8 étapes, dirigée par Marion Rousse. Lors de la première édition, Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar) s'est largement imposée devant sa compatriote Demi Vollering (Team SD Worx) et la Polonaise Katarzyna Niewiadoma. Cette année les coureuses vont partir de Clermont-Ferrand pour terminer cette grosse semaine à Pau, avec un contre-la-montre de 22 km. Après avoir traversé le Massif Central, direction les Pyrénées avec une arrivée au sommet et quelle étape ! Après être parties de Lannemezan, les athlètes vont grimper le Col d’Aspin (12 km à 6.5%) avant de conclure avec le tant redouté Col du Tourmalet (17 km à 7.3%).

Le Tour de France Femmes compte également un seul contre-la-montre, lors de la 8e et dernière étape, le dimanche 30 juillet 2023. Au programme 22 kilomètres entre Pau et Pau.

Three Cat. 1 climbs are on the menu for the peloton, with Pogacar hoping to chisel away at the Dane’s 2’22” advantage. Just four competitive stages remain on the run to Paris, meaning Pogacar has no time to waste.

Tour de France 2023 Route stage 17: Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc - Courchevel

A glorious fight for the breakaway is in the pipeline. Following a rolling section of 15 kilometres the riders enter the Col des Saises, which is a climb of 13.4 kilometres at 5.1%. The route descends to Beaufort only to return to climbing, this time on the Cormet de Roselend, an ascent of 19.9 kilometres at 6%. Let’s see how the breakaway rolls by now.

Following a prolonged downhill the Côte de Longefoy throws in 6.6 kilometres at 7.5% before the route continues to climbs at shallow gradients to Notre-Dame-du-Pré. Still 55 kilometres to go when the riders move through the resort village.

The Tour descends to Moûtiers and moments later, in Brides-les-Bains, the Col de la Loze opens on a gentle note. The climb totals almost 30 kilometres, but the first half is nothing special. The gradients go up to 7% after Méribel, which is still nothing compared to the last 5 kilometres. This part of the Col de la Loze was first paved in 2019 and it’s extremely irregular. Still, the average gradient of the last 5 kilometres sits at over 10%.

A 6 kilometres downhill, with a short uphill halfway, leads to the last 600 metres. Which is another insane ramp at 10.8%.

The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the first three on the Col de la Loze get 8, 5 and 2 seconds.

‘Turn the Cameras Off’: The Juiciest Revelations from Netflix ‘Tour de France: Unchained’ Season 2

Dramas, disasters, and disgrace.

The second season of the Netflix Tour de France: Unchained docuseries has got everything you could wish for from a binge-watch box set.

Set for public release Tuesday June 11 and titled in French Au Cœur du Peloton,  the follow-up to the wildly popular debut charts all the plots and subplots underlying the 2023 Tour de France .

“Talking heads” interviews with the likes of Tadej Pogačar , Mark Cavendish , and Patrick Lefevere give the eight-episode series more juicy soundbites that any crack squad of scriptwriters could conjure.

“Fly on the wall” footage captures massage-table meltdowns, team bus bust-ups, and riders grappling with despair, doubt, and disaster.

There are more juicy revelations and surprising insights in the six hours of Unchained than could be captured in this one overview.

But some stand out: the desolation of Pog, the wrath and redemption of Ben O’Connor, and the frat boy bully bromance between Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel in particular.

Of course, everything we see is the product of the Quadbox- Box to Box production company’s quest for quick-hitting, hard-impact TV.

Directorial decisions can emphasize or diminish any detail, and plots can be stitched together from a patchwork of otherwise innocuous incidents.

There are occasions where the cycling geeks among us may detect some directorial over-drive in the second series of Unchained . But all that aside, this must-watch Netflix show brings loads of wild new insights from behind the doors of team buses, hotel rooms, and luxury apartments.

Here are a few of the can’t-miss revelations from Netflix’s Tour de France: Unchained , season 2:

Frat boy bromances and scourges of the sprint: Jasper Philipsen and Mathieu van der Poel

“F**k them or be f***ed,” Jasper Philipsen says to Mathieu van der Poel midway through episode 3.

That’s pretty much the attitude painted onto green jersey-winner and undisputed 2023 sprint alpha Philipsen in this second series of Unchained .

Titled No Mercy , the third episode puts full focus on Philipsen and his henchman Van der Poel.

They are without doubt this season’s “villains,” reprising the role Wout van Aert was burdened with in series 1.

Philipsen and Van der Poel are made into the frat boy bullies of a teen movie.

There’s a touchy-feely bromance between them that’s overloaded with testosterone and fueled by their overwhelming superiority in the 2023 Tour’s mass sprints. They’re troublemakers, risk-takers, bunch sprint bad-boys.

In fact, the whole Alpecin-Deceuninck squad, including management duo Christoph and Philip Roodhooft, are a mob of marauding troublemakers.

“The DNA of Alpecin-Dececinink is not waiting. Attacking with positively aggressive racing style, creating opportunities for ourselves,” says Christoph Roodhooft, threatening music playing behind. “We’re always in races with that mentality.”

It’s no Netflix scoop that Philipsen and Van der Poel were the scourges of the 2023 sprints.

The Belgian speedster was cited for line deviations, caught bully-boy “blocking” an attack by Pascal Eenkhoorn, and outed by rivals as a mindless menace.

Likewise, Van der Poel was relegated after he got all argy-bargy on Biniam Girmay in stage 4.

Of course, Netflix hypes that to 11. Replays of sprint crashes are regularly cut into the Alpecin-Deceuninck episode, and the Gino Mäder tragedy regularly overshadows the show.

How much of Alpecin-Deceuninck’s villainy is a reality?

Netflix blurs the lines. But it makes for a great watch.

The rage and redemption of Ben O’Connor

Thought Ben O’Connor was the peloton’s happy-go-lucky, always affable GC guy?

Not all the time.

O’Connor becomes one of the standout characters of Unchained . He’s the central figure of episode 2 and followed throughout the series as he tracks a narrative arc befitting a Bafta-winning script.

After his fourth-place finish in 2021, the Aussie climber became the center of the Ag2r-Citroën universe at the 2023 Tour de France.

But the wheels came off spectacularly, both on and off the road.

O’Connor lost time early and was never close to being in contention.

Embedded Netflix cameras capture tantrums, tirades, and terse meetings with management that reveal an all-new side of BO’C as the axle breaks beneath him.

The typically mild-mannered Aussie is vulnerable and volatile; riddled with self-doubt in training, brimming with rage on the team bus.

And at times, it seems his Ag2r staffers don’t know what to do, or say, next.

“Ben is the first to be disappointed when things don’t got well. Ben is an emotional, appreciative kid who is anxious like all top-level athletes,” says sport manager Vincent Lavenu in the understatement of the second episode.

“Racehorses are never calm, are they?”

But O’Connor isn’t just a bundle of wrath.

After he unravels spectacularly in the first half of the Tour, he drags himself back together to help pull teammate Felix Gall to his marquee win on the Col de la Loze.

O’Connor’s redemption is portrayed perfectly in a vintage “coming of age” story. He starts the series an angsty teenager, but ends it a gracious young gentleman.

The desolation of Tadej Pogačar

UAE Emirates opted out of appearing in the first series of Unchained , and the absence of Tadej Pogačar, the undoubted protagonist of the peloton, meant the show felt a touch hollow.

Not this time around.

UAE Emirates is in, and Pogačar is turned up to maximum volume in this second series of Unchained .

The Slovenian’s devastating defeat by Jonas Vingegaard is at the center of the show, and viewers are treated to a version of “Pogi” altogether different from the 2024-dominating, social media-trolling wild-child we’ve become used to.

Footage of Pogačar at home with his partner Urška Žigart reveal his nerves and self-doubt after he lost training time to injuries sustained at Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

Poignant scenes of the sensation of the current season with his teammates, soigneurs, and osteopath after his race explodes on the Col de la Loze show “Pogi” is human after all.

The “I’m gone, I’m dead” message Pogačar sent across team radio when he was dropped by Jumbo-Visma [ now Visma-Lease a Bike – ed ] in the high mountains of stage 17 has become a meme.

A handful more iconic scenes are captured in episode 6, Domination , which focuses on the Tour’s kingmaker stage through the Alps.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” a desolate Pogačar wails as he collapses into the arms of teammates and staff at the finish line of stage 17, stunned at losing six minutes on the Col de la Loze.

He’s childlike and vulnerable, the show’s tragic hero.

Footage from behind the podium after that unforgettable day captures Pogačar isolated and inconsolable, deep in the tangle of his spectacular unravelling.

“This climb, there’s no mercy,” Pogačar later says of the Col de la Loze, before he looks to the floor pensively.

Pogačar’s humble humanity is depicted in direct opposition to a ruthless, robotic rendition of Jumbo-Visma throughout the second series of Unchained .

The Dutch team’s top staffers Richard Plugge and Grischa Niermann seem vicious and vindictive. Vingegaard is cold and calculating.

Of course, much of that is a play of the producers.

But Netflix and Box to Box do bring out a new side to Pogačar.

Strip away the Cannibalesque hunger on the bike and social prankstering off of it, and “Pogi” is just as fallible as you and me.

Ineos Grenadiers and its Tom Pidcock problem

Tom Pidcock got a lot of airtime in the debut series of Unchained with an episode that focused on his daredevil descending and stage-winning exploits on the Alpe d’Huez.

He was the cheeky Yorkshire terrier of the Ineos Grenadiers team bus, a wild new talent that might inspire his team out of the doldrums.

This time around, Pidcock is back, and his ever-escalating ambition seems to have gotten the better of him — or the better of his team, at least.

The episode titled The Enemy Within is an intriguing dissection of a squad regarded as the pinnacle of the sports’ scientific, lazer-guided approach, and a character assassination of a racer painted [perhaps unfairly] with aloof arrogance.

One confrontation between Pidcock and team director Steve Cummings shows the rider as an unruly rogue atom in the Ineos Grenadiers universe.

Breakout climber Carlos Rodríguez has risen above Pidcock in the GC pecking order, and DS Cummings has to deliver the bad news to the young Brit.

“I guess the logical thing is I ride for Carlos, but I’m not riding on a flat bit, killing myself and getting dropped,” Pidcock huffs, face down on a massage table. “There’s a long way to Paris, and I’ve only got better.”

Cummings scratches his head anxiously before he presses his point.

Pidcock’s time losses makes Rodríguez Ineos Grenadiers’ new leader.

“I’m not sure I agree to be honest,” Pidcock grumbles, before insisting the watching camera crew is escorted out of the room.

Intriguingly, Ineos Grenadiers doesn’t seem to be able, or willing, to give Pidcock his orders.

Cummings and team principal Rod Ellingworth bend to Pidcock’s ambition, and seem to shrug it off when he doesn’t work with Rodríguez on stage 14.

“Tom is obsessed with winning, he’s a winner, you need that ruthless streak. It’s just about how we as a team manage that,” a powerless-seeming Cummings says.

Rodríguez quietly gets on with scoring a stage-win and finishing fifth overall in the face of Pidcock’s anti-team ethos.

How the two coalesce at the 2024 Tour de France will give insight into just how “Unchained” Pidcock truly is from the rest of his team.

Lastly, a few other highlights:

• Pello Bilbao and the emotion of the stage-win he tributes to lost friend Gino Mäder.
• The simmering tension between the old-school leaders governing Groupama FDJ and the “evil overlords” scientists that steer Visma-Lease a Bike.
• Thibaut Pinot’s last dance in his final Tour de France mountain stage before retirement.
• Julian Alaphilippe and his quest to refind his best in the face of ongoing pressure from boss Patrick Lefevere.

And a few things that would have been nice to see more of:

• More Cav! Mark Cavendish is a one-man drama machine. Sadly, his crash and abandon on stage 8 means his screen time is limited.
• More Pogi! It would have been interesting to see more of Tadej Pogačar’s comeback from the wrist injury he sustained at Liège-Bastone-Liège, and a little more depth on the fallout from the Col de la Loze. But after UAE Emirates’ no-show on season 1, what we get is sure better than no Pogi at all.

Tour de France: Unchained , season 2 is due for public release via Netflix on June 11.

La saison 2 de Netflix sur le Tour passe le braquet supérieur

Avec des séquences bourrées d’émotion et de clashs, la saison 2 de Netflix consacrée au Tour de France 2023, « Au cœur du peloton », se révèle encore meilleure que la première.

Une première étape pour voir. La suivante pour accélérer. La saison 2 de la série Netflix à l’intérieur du Tour de France et disponible à partir du 11 juin, était attendue au tournant. Contrairement aux coureurs qui ne savent plus comment gérer leur vitesse et foncent sans réfléchir en attendant les inéluctables chutes, la série a su trouver un nouveau rythme. Après le Tour 2022, raconté de l’intérieur avec une débauche de bruits et de belles images, la saison 2 consacrée au Tour 2023 mérite parfaitement son nom de « Au cœur du peloton ».

Certains des huit épisodes ressemblent à une plongée dans un peloton de sentiments mêlés. Presque comme sur un divan de psychiatre, il est question de deuil, de peur, de colère, de trahison et d’orgueil. Bien sûr, la grande nouveauté par rapport à l’an dernier, c’est que l’équipe UAE de Tadej Pogacar a, cette fois, ouvert ses portes. Et cela permet de mieux retranscrire le duel avec Jonas Vingegaard , d’abord âpre puis terminé dans la sidération, voire la suspicion. Mais, de façon inattendue, ce n’est pas cette bagarre de cadors qui est la plus marquante.

Car la série touche d’entrée au cœur avec une séquence chargée d’émotion dans le premier épisode. Alors qu’il est en stage dans les Alpes, Ben O’Connor, l’Australien d’AG2R-Citroën, est prévenu d’un accident dans une descente du Tour de Suisse impliquant Gino Mäder, qui fut son coéquipier en 2020. Quelques minutes plus tard, son entraîneur se gare et s’avance vers lui pour lui apprendre le décès de Mäder. O’Connor se liquéfie littéralement. « Cette mort a réveillé notre fragilité », glisse-t-il.

Après la minute de silence imposée à tous les coureurs avant le départ par le patron de l’épreuve Christian Prudhomme, Julian Alaphilippe , le visage beaucoup plus fermé qu’à l’accoutumée, confie: « Nous ne sommes rien sur Terre et encore moins sur un vélo. Rien que d’évoquer Gino me met des frissons partout. »

O’Connor, qui n’est pourtant pas le coureur le plus charismatique du peloton, offre malgré lui d’autres scènes fortes à la série. On le voit furieux contre ses propres patrons, coupables selon lui d’avoir aidé son compatriote de Bora-Hansgrohe, Jai Hindley dans sa quête du maillot jaune. « Je me sens trahi », lâche-t-il sans mesurer la force de ses mots. Vincent Lavenu, le patron d’AG2R, se montre assez agacé de ce qui lui apparaît comme un caprice mal placé. D’ailleurs dans un autre épisode, Lavenu, d’habitude assez posé, est pris en flagrant délit de colère alors qu’O’Connor, largué pour le classement général, se met à hurler dans son micro. « Il fait chier Ben, lâche Lavenu. Il est négatif et se laisse emporter par ses émotions. » Mais comme dans un conte, la fin est plus heureuse, avec un O’Connor qui accepte de se mettre au service d’un de ses coéquipiers.

L’ambiance se révèle aussi électrique chez les Anglais d’Ineos. Tom Pidcock, vainqueur l’année précédente à l’Alpe-d’Huez, pérore face caméra sur ses nouvelles ambitions. Mais lentement, il se voit dépasser au général par son coéquipier espagnol Carlos Rodriguez. Ses dirigeants, bien embêtés, décident de changer de leader et tentent de le lui expliquer. D’un bruyant « Coupez les caméras », Pidcock montre sa fureur. Le lendemain, sur l’étape du Grand Colombier, il ne respecte pas les consignes et attaque Rodriguez. La crise et la tension sont alors totales chez Ineos. Seule la défaillance, quelques jours plus tard, de Pidcock éteint l’incendie. Mais il est inédit de pouvoir contempler de l’intérieur une telle tension dans une équipe.

On ne pourra pas non plus reprocher à Netflix de mettre la poussière sous le tapis du tracé. Le malaise qui avait pris le Tour à la gorge après le survol du contre-la-montre de Combloux par Vingegaard est largement évoqué. Des visages ahuris par l’immense chrono du Danois, des questions sur le dopage qui n’appellent que des moues dubitatives mais qui ont le mérite d’être posées. « À un moment, la vérité surgit. Je vous ai répondu », tacle Marc Madiot. Les yeux dans la caméra, Vingegaard semble lui répondre « Je suis clean. Même dans cent ans, on ne trouvera rien dans mes échantillons. »

Son patron Richard Plugge, se révèle plus manipulateur. Il finit par avouer le motif de sa sortie publique sur l’équipe Groupama-FDJ qui boit des bières au lieu de travailler. Laquelle avait fait hurler Marc Madiot de rage. « On a détourné l’attention des gens avec cette histoire alors qu’on ne parlait que de Jonas », justifie, plein de morgue, Plugge.

Cette saison 2 plus forte que la première n’aurait pas été complète sans de nouvelles attaques de Patrick Lefevere, le manager de Quick Step, contre son coureur Julian Alaphilippe. Sur la fin de la série, ce dernier confesse: « Vous voulez la vérité ? J’ai été nul à chier sur ce Tour. » Mais juste avant, il s’était offert la meilleure réplique de la série. « Combien je suis payé ? Un peu trop pour Patrick je crois ! »

The Tour will head east to the Southern Alps for stage 17, a 177,8km route from Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux to Superdévoluy with no significant obstacles faced while crossing the Drôme. 

A large breakaway group will likely be formed with its riders looking for a chance to shine, assuming they will be able to deal with the climbs in the final 40 kilometres. We will get a clearer idea of this on the ascent of the Col Bayard, (6.8km at 7.3%), although the final selection should be made on the Col du Noyer (7.5km at 8.4%) just 12 kilometres from the finish line, and a time bonus sprint at the top. Stage 17 ends with a new climb for the Tour, the Côte de SuperDévoluy (3.8km at 5.9%).

The SuperDévoluy was first climbed in the Critérium du Dauphiné in 2013 where Samuel Sánchez took the win. Three years later, it was Steve Cummings’ turn to take the win while Chris Froome sealed the overall victory for the third time.

Marc Soler rakte ud efter sejren på 7. etape af Critérium du Dauphiné, men hans forspring på over fire minutter, da han tog hul på den vilde finalestigning, var ikke nok.

Primoz Roglic ville det nemlig anderledes, og sloveneren tog sin anden etapesejr i træk. Remco Evenepoel blev igen den store taber, da han blev sat med 6 kilometer til mål og tabte 1 minut og 46 sekunder til Roglic og de andre favoritter.

Den sidste stigning mod mål var så brutal, at det føltes som om, at kilometerne slet ikke talte ned. Ti kilometer med en stigningsprocent på ni procent i snit uden at flade ud på noget tidspunkt.

Mon ikke den stigning en dag vender tilbage – bare i Tour de France-sammenhæng.

Sådan forløb etapen

Christopher Juul Jensen (Jayco) var syg og kom ikke til start, mens Anton Charmig (Astana) udgik undervejs på en barsk etape.

Den startede hektisk med mange, der gerne ville i udbrud. Heriblandt var flere danskere, men hverken Magnus Cort, Casper Pedersen eller Mads Pedersen havde held med missionen.

I stedet etablerede et udbrud på ti ryttere sig, og hen over de tre kategori 1-stigninger på etapen blev feltet holdt på afstand.

Marc Soler (UAE) var bedst placeret i klassementet, og spanieren var også klart stærkest over næstsidste stigning, hvorfor han tog hul på den afsluttende Samoëns-stigning alene med mere end fire minutter ned til favoritterne.

Bora-holdet satte dog en seriøs forfølgelse i gang, og det kostede blandt andre Remco Evenepoel deltagelsen i det stærkt reducerede favoritfelt, mens Solers forspring smuldrede langsomt væk.

De sidste to kilometer var dermed et anliggende mellem favoritterne, og for anden dag i træk var Roglic bedst.
