16 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions in Wilmington, NC

Written by Lana Law and Meagan Drillinger Updated Jun 14, 2024

Not as well-known to tourists as its southern sister cities of Charleston and Savannah, Wilmington, North Carolina has its own charming historic district of fine old homes and mercantile blocks. The revitalized downtown and lovely riverfront have become a center for dining, shopping, entertainment, and the arts.

The city's most attention-grabbing attraction — it's hard to miss — is the immense Battleship North Carolina , a WWII-era warship that is open to tour. Wilmington's port, sheltered on Cape Fear River, gained prosperity by shipping petroleum and pulp products, and this coast played an important part in Civil War history. Today, however, Wilmington's Fort Fisher is better known for the beautiful white beaches of the state park that surrounds it.

The Riverwalk on Wilmington's waterfront

In Wilmington and the surrounding area, you can visit historic plantations and homes, including Bellamy House, Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens , and Poplar Grove Plantation.

While Wilmington is deeply rooted in American history — the evidence of which we can still see to this day — it is a decidedly modern city, with high-end hotels, restaurants, shopping, and activities that will please any 21st-century traveler. Although, a quick turn down any corner can have you stepping back in time to the days before the Civil War.

Whether you're traveling with your whole family or looking for a romantic getaway for two, you'll find plenty of things to do in Wilmington.

Battleship North Carolina from the SECU Memorial Walkway

Commissioned on April 9, 1941, Battleship North Carolina was the first of 10 battleships to join the American fleet in World War II. During her service, the North Carolina carried 144 commissioned Navy officers, 2,195 enlisted men, and about 100 marines. Their stories and their lives on board the ship are much of the focus of the exhibits you'll see as you explore the nine levels of the ship, illustrated by photographs and artifacts, along with recorded oral histories.

One of the ship's attractions, especially for visiting children, is its accessibility. They can climb into the sailors' bunks, go into the massive engine room, plan strategies in the Combat Information Center, and take aim from behind the great guns (these include nine 16-inch, 45-caliber guns in three turrets and 20 five-inch, 38-caliber guns in 10 twin mounts).

The Hull of Battleship North Carolina

The battleship also hosts a variety of events on the weekends, including re-enactments with living history interpreters and special behind-the-scenes tours that take visitors to areas not usually open to the public.

If you don't want to tour the ship, you can simply walk on the SECU Memorial Walkway , a raised boardwalk that goes all the way around the outside of the ship. It runs through a pleasant natural area and provides excellent views of the ship. It's free to the public and is a good alternative if you don't have enough time to tour the interior.

From the Riverwalk you can see the ship docked on the opposite side of the river and a water taxi makes scheduled runs over to the ship.

As you tour, their stories will unfold, along with those of their slaves, whose restored quarters are among the few to exist from urban households.

Throughout its 150-year history, the house has survived the Civil War, being commandeered by Federal troops after the fall of Fort Fisher, a state of disrepair, and a devastating fire. Outside, the recreated Victorian gardens are shaded by a magnolia tree that is 150 years old.

Learn more about the Civil War and the history of enslavement in Wilmington at the Bellamy Mansion

Learn more about the Civil War and the history of enslavement in Wilmington at the Bellamy Mansion © Pgiam / Getty Images / iStockphoto

Wilmington is one of the most captivating cities on the North Carolina coast. Though not as well known as Charleston , South Carolina or Savannah , Georgia, Wilmington has a photogenic historic district, a great dining scene and wide-ranging attractions, plus lovely beaches just outside of town .

Bursting with southern charm, Wilmington is an easy place to love – in part because there’s so much to do here. You can peer back in time at a packed history museum or scramble through the corridors of a WWII battleship.

The city’s gardens have a blend of beauty and the bizarre, from fragrant magnolias to Venus flytraps. You can also get a dose of nature, taking kayaking trips through the Banks Channel or watching the sunset from the Riverwalk. Here's our pick of the top things to do in Wilmington.

Learn about the way people lived in the 19th century at the Bellamy Mansion

The grand 22-room mansion in Wilmington’s historic district gives an eye-opening perspective of how residents lived prior to and during the Civil War. A self-guided tour takes you through the entire house from basement to belvedere as well as to the restored quarters of the people who were enslaved here at the back of the property.

Along the way, you’ll gain insight into the real people who lived here, like William B Gould, an enslaved artisan who escaped to freedom in 1862, and later served the remainder of the Civil War working for the Union Navy.

Peer back in time at the Cape Fear Museum of Science and History

Even the most reluctant of museum-goers tend to have a great time exploring the fascinating collections of this Smithsonian affiliate . Open since 1898, the Cape Fear Museum of Science and History has exhibited everything from 8000-year-old Native American artifacts and a prehistoric ground sloth (the skeleton) to Michael Jordan memorabilia – the NBA star grew up in Wilmington and he remains the city’s best-loved native son. Hands-on activities add to the fun at this top destination for families.

Explore the decks of the USS North Carolina, a restored WWII battleship

The massive, 45,000-ton USS North Carolina played a major role during conflicts in the Pacific. You can learn all about the vessel’s adventures and see what life was like for the 2300 wartime sailors who lived and worked aboard this floating city on a self-guided tour. Visiting the ship’s nine different levels, you’ll pass living spaces, the barbershop, the sick bay, the engine room and many other areas.

The Riverwalk in Wilmington NC at sunset with restaurants and boats lining the boardwalk on either side

Breathe in the salt-tinged air while taking in the views along the Riverwalk

Skirting along the Cape Fear River, the Riverwalk is hands-down the best place in Wilmington for a memorable stroll. The boardwalk path, which runs for 1.75 miles, passes waterfront parks, restaurant terraces and bars, with fine viewpoints along the way. Some 30 years in the making, the Riverwalk remains the pride of Wilmington since its completion back in 2017.

Stop and smell the azaleas in Airlie Gardens

If you’re around in early spring, don’t miss a visit to the 67-acre Airlie Gardens . Thousands of bright azaleas transform these botanical gardens into a brilliant kaleidoscope of colors. At other times of the year, the Airlie is still worth your time as there’s always something in bloom, and the garden's icons – like its centuries-old live oak trees – never fail to impress.

Ponder nature’s oddities at the Museum of the Bizarre

What are the best cheap things to do in Wilmington? The list in this budget-friendly town runs rather long, but at the top is undoubtedly the Museum of the Bizarre . For a mere $3, you can check out one collector’s macabre assemblage of exotica, from a taxidermy two-headed goat to an imprint of Bigfoot’s, uh big foot. Afterward, head to the Laser Vault Maze, a favorite with kids. There you can navigate through a web of lasers attempting to reach the end without crossing through a beam.

Indulge in a multi-course feast at one of the best restaurants in Wilmington

Famed for its seasonal fare, PinPoint Restaurant serves some of the best cooking in the south. Executive chef Cameron Garvey sources from local fishers, farmers and foragers with a menu that changes nightly. Expect mouthwatering seafood (like sea bass carpaccio topped with caviar), tender grilled meats with surprising accents (hemp butter, duck fat, melted leeks) and imaginative vegan delicacies like fried oyster mushroom steak.

Wrightsville Beach at sunset with the pier stretching out in the sea on the right hand side.

Enjoy a day by the seaside at Wrightsville Beach

Just east of Wilmington, a short causeway leads out to the island of Wrightsville Beach. Four miles of sandy shoreline sets the stage for a memorable seaside getaway.

Come early to watch the sunrise over the Atlantic, or spend the day relaxing on the beach and frolicking in the waves. Whether you’re looking for the best free things to do in the area or simply seeking a great family activity, Wrightsville Beach should figure at the top of your list.

Go for a scenic paddle through Banks Channel

Immerse yourself in the rhythms of coastal life on a paddling adventure near Wilmington. Picture yourself gliding past marsh grass on the mirrorlike waters of the Banks Channel as an osprey soars overhead, and you’ll understand why so many local paddlers rave about this unique area.

Wrightsville SUP rents standup paddleboards, kayaks and other aquatic gear, and they also lead tours, offer lessons and give combo yoga/SUP classes.

Have a drink at one of Wilmington’s best local hangouts

The Satellite Bar and Lounge hits all the right notes when it comes to nightlife. There’s always something on whether it’s DJs spinning danceable indie grooves on vinyl or live bluegrass bands holding court (most Sundays). The big outdoor terrace is a dog-friendly spot to play a few games of cornhole or sip a craft brew and watch the evening unfold.

Browse for gift ideas at the City Market Shops

When you’re looking for the best shopping in Wilmington, bypass the mall and head to an 1880s building near the waterfront. You’ll find artwork, housewares and organic bath and body products and many edible temptations. The North Carolina Country Store sells quality jams, specialty coffee, hot sauces and other items created by North Carolina disabled artisans.

A view down the street at night of the Front Street Brewery sign in Wilmington, North Carolina

Taste some of Wilmington’s best craft beer at Front Street Brewery

Going strong since 1995, Front Street Brewery remains a pillar of the craft brewing scene. Brewmasters here have racked up over 100 awards over the years, which is no surprise once you taste its flagship German-style lager or the best-selling Port City IPA (a bold, citrusy combination of west coast and New England styles).

Enjoy unfussy drinks and a great crowd at the best dive bar in Wilmington

A great place to start (or end the night), Lula’s A Pub is a basement dive with a heart of gold. Expect well-made classic drinks (go for the old-fashioned), feel-good rock anthems and a cozy low-lit interior that makes for an atmospheric watering hole. The challenge of finding the place only adds to the appeal.

Tour the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden

If you’re looking for unique things to do in Wilmington, head over to the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden. Located behind an elementary school, this small wetlands park is home to Venus flytraps, sundews and other carnivorous plants. Come in the spring for the best chance to see the flora in action.

The 230-plus blocks that comprise Wilmington's historic district are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and they contain everything from mansions to museums, as well as a host of restaurants and shops. One of the best ways to see the district's highlights is via a guided tour. Some traveler-approved operators include Haunted Wilmington and Wilmington Trolley Company . But you can also download the Wilmington.tours app to your smartphone, which includes four tours, including one with a pub crawl theme and another with a Civil War slant, if you'd rather take a self-guided tour.

One visitor says it well when describing Wilmington as a "fascinating" but "under-appreciated" Southern city, citing the history that occurred on the port city's cobbled streets. Others say the historic district is charming and quaint, yet still feels cosmopolitan.

Battleship North Carolina Battleship North Carolina

Back when Battleship North Carolina was commissioned in 1941, the ship was thought of as "the world's greatest sea weapon," and it turned out to be just that by participating in more than a dozen offensives in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. The ship was decommissioned in 1947 and was going to be sent for scrap metal but North Carolinians petitioned for the ship to be preserved as a museum – and in 1962, it was dedicated as just that. Today, visitors can tour the ship, all the while learning about the history of its veterans.

Recent travelers call Battleship North Carolina a must-see for travelers of all ages. But it's important to note that the ship decks can get pretty hot, especially in the summer, and there are lots of stairs to traverse. Recent visitors also recommended arriving early in the day to avoid the midday heat and heaviest crowds.

Bellamy Mansion Museum Bellamy Mansion Museum

From the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century, one of the largest slaveholders in the state – Dr. John Bellamy – his wife and 10 children lived in this stately 1800s-era Greek Revival mansion. The property contains 22 rooms, lush gardens and restored slave quarters – and today, knowledgeable tour guides give visitors a history of the family, the architecture and the enslaved people that worked on the property. Of the approximately 115 enslaved men, women and children that Bellamy owned, nine resided and worked at the property, according to historical documents.

Along with the entire mansion, travelers can tour the two-story brick slave quarters. Designed to complement the main house, the area includes four sleeping chambers, a laundry room and two five-seat privies. This style of housing for enslaved workers was once quite common in cities where slavery was legal. The structure that stands today – considered one of the best-preserved examples in the country – provides an interesting contrast to the small, rudimentary huts often seen on plantations.

Poplar Grove Plantation Poplar Grove Plantation

Poplar Grove Plantation is part of the National Park Service's Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which runs from Wilmington in the north to Jacksonville, Florida , in the south. The Gullah Geechee are the descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. Along with their unique Creole language, the Gullah Geechee are known for their distinct arts, crafts, music, food and religious practices. You'll learn about the Gullah Geechee with a visit to Poplar Grove Plantation, formerly a sweet potato and peanut plantation.

Thanks to the agricultural skills of the Gullah Geechee, who worked on the plantation, the sweet potatoes and peanuts harvested were sold locally to planter families to supplement the diet of the enslaved. Aside from their agricultural contributions, the enslaved people that worked on the plantation also constructed the manor house that visitors see today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the three-story manor house dates back to 1850. Also on-site are two heritage art studios (a basket gallery and a blacksmith shop), as well as an agriculture exhibit that displays a peanut thrasher and information on the production of peanuts. Families with kids may also be pleased to know that the on-site stables are home to a variety of pigs, goats, ducks, horses, sheep, cats, hens and roosters, representative of 19th-century farm life.

How To Spend A Fantastic Weekend In Beautiful Wilmington, North Carolina

  • Weekend Getaway

Wilmington, North Carolina, is your quintessential Southern town filled with oak tree-lined historic streets and a vibrant downtown. Not as well-known nationally as Savannah or Charleston, South Carolina, Wilmington has so much to offer with its many museums, historic sites, and gorgeous beaches. Here are some great local activities which will help you plan a fantastic weekend in beautiful Wilmington.

Thank you to Visit Wilmington N.C. River District and Island Beaches for hosting me on a press trip to this beautiful area. All opinions are my own.

Things To Do In Wilmington

The beautiful beach at Fort Fisher State Recreation Area.

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

The Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is the perfect day trip from Wilmington. Located at the tip of Pleasure Island, the site has 6 miles of pristine beach and trails through a salt marsh. There is limited development on this protected area which is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. It is a popular area for birders, photographers, surf fishermen, and four-wheel drive enthusiasts (seasonally and with permits). There is a visitor center with restrooms, beach access, a Civil War fort, the state aquarium, and a boat ramp. Plan a hike around the historic area, tour the aquarium and enjoy the afternoon at the beach.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher.

North Carolina Aquarium At Fort Fisher

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located on the historic Fort Fisher property and a short stroll to the beach. The highlight of my visit was seeing the Asian small-clawed otters in their new, expansive habitat in the Aquarium’s conservatory. I could have watched these guys all day. There is so much to see and do during your visit. Exhibits include freshwater streams, coastline habitats, reefs, the open ocean, swamps, and even sea turtles. The habitats and animals are from North Carolina and around the world. Make sure to tour the outdoor exhibits which are a short hike on a boardwalk. There is an onsite café, and the gift shop has a variety of items for both adults and children.

Fort Fisher Confederate Monument at Kure Beach, North Carolina.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site

Fort Fisher was controlled by the Confederacy until the last few months of the Civil War and kept the Port of Wilmington open to blockade runners. There is a museum at the visitor center you can tour. Outside, take some time to walk the trail by the fort and explore the 15 wayside exhibits which surround the remnants of the fort. It is a short drive to the boat ramp where the remains of Battery Buchanan can be seen.

Art at the Cameron Art Museum

Cameron Art Museum

The Cameron Art Museum (CAM) is a remarkably interesting site. Not only is it an art museum but it was the site of the Battle of Forks Road, a Civil War skirmish in which victory fell to 1,600 United States Black troops, many native to the area. This virtually unknown story will soon be a significant part of the museum narrative when the CAM unveils Boundless , a life-size bronze sculpture by Stephen Hays, a North Carolina artist. He used cast features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story to create the sculpture. The 11 are descendants of the troops, reenactors, veterans, and community leaders. The sculpture will be unveiled in November 2021. In the meantime, you can explore the trail outside the museum which has interpretive signs about the battle.

Indoors the CAM has an eclectic collection and a variety of art on display in its galleries. Exhibitions change about every 6 months. In addition, the museum offers a variety of classes, workshops, and events throughout the year in a welcoming, community environment.

Airlie Gardens

Airlie Gardens

The lovely Airlie Gardens is a popular attraction in the area with more than 120,000 visitors each year. The historic property stretches over 67 acres which includes more than a dozen gardens. Some highlights include the Airlie Oak Lawn which surrounds the almost 500-year-old Airlie oak tree. This stately old tree is a Southern live oak draped with Spanish moss that dominates the scenery. The Pergola Garden and its iconic columns were created in 1904. It is a formal garden with jasmine covering the Pergola and is surrounded by azaleas and camellias. The Spring Garden is near a brick patio which is the last remnant of the original mansion.

Pro Tip: The Airlie Gardens are recognized as a coastal region site on the North Carolina Birding Trail. You can take an 8 a.m. tour with Wild Bird & Garden which allows you to bird watch and enjoy the gardens without the crowds or the heat.

Port equipment seen from the Henrietta Riverboat.

Cape Fear Riverboats Scenic Cruises & Private Charters

Cape Fear Riverboats offer scenic and sunset cruises onboard the Henrietta. The cruise is just an hour long and I found it interesting to learn about the history and the local anecdotes. The cruise begins by heading upriver to see the forks of two major rivers. Once the riverboat turns and heads south you will pass by the battleship USS North Carolina . The captains give you a brief history of the riverfront from the days of early explorers to the modern ships that now come to the Port of Wilmington. With the cruise being just an hour long it is easy to fit it into a day of sightseeing.

Wilmington Riverwalk.

Explore Downtown And The Riverwalk

Wilmington’s revitalized downtown and Riverwalk are the perfect locations to spend the day shopping, visiting museums, and dining. The Riverwalk is nearly 2 miles long and follows the bank of the Cape Fear River. It extends from downtown all the way to the Isabella Holmes Bridge with more than 200 shops, restaurants, and attractions nearby. I love the cute, little landscaped pocket parks. Views of the iconic WWII battleship USS North Carolina can be seen from the Riverwalk.

The horse-drawn carriage tours offered by Springbrook Farms are not your typical tours. The Percheron draft horses pulling your carriage are rescue horses. For more than 30 years, Springbrook Farms has committed to rescuing and caring for these beautiful horses. Tours will take you through elegant neighborhoods and the stately homes and historic mansions of the former elite who called this area home.

Early morning at Kure Beach.

There are three gorgeous beach towns located just a short drive from downtown Wilmington. Plan to enjoy at least one beach day during your visit. Each one of these communities has its own distinct vibe, but all three towns have one thing in common: white, sandy beaches and lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean. Kure Beach is a quieter place and was popular with the retirees I met during my visit. This is the beach to visit to slow down and relax. Carolina Beach is famed for its vibrant boardwalk, shops, and rides. Wrightsville Beach is a bustling area with shops and restaurants nestled amidst beachside neighborhoods. The city’s been named one of the world’s best surf towns.

Best Hotels In Wilmington

There is such a variety of lodging in the area — everything from downtown hotels and historic properties — to chain hotels, beach houses, and full-service resorts. There is a range of options to fit your budget. Visit Wilmington and Beaches for more information and how to find your perfect place to stay in walkable downtown Wilmington or in one of the three beach towns. The following are where I stayed during my weekend visit.

The Front Street Inn

The Front Street Inn is a historic boutique hotel with the ideal location for exploring downtown Wilmington and the Riverwalk. This cute little inn consistently wins viewers’ choice awards for Wilmington’s Best Hotel/B&B. Peace and quiet abound but you are just a few steps away from the shops, pubs, restaurants, and galleries of the downtown historic district. Head out in another direction into a beautiful historic residential area which is the perfect destination for a stroll through the tree-lined streets. The rooms are clean and well-appointed and most have a queen bed and sleep two. There are a few rooms and larger suites that sleep three. Although the rooms are on the smaller side there are lovely common areas to spread out a bit. Breakfast is included with the package.

Hampton Inn Wilmington-University Area/Smith Creek Station

I moved to the Hampton Inn Wilmington-University Area/Smith Creek Station for one night’s accommodation and this is a great option for a chain hotel. The location is 4 miles from downtown and a 10-minute drive to Wrightsville beach. The rate includes breakfast in the morning and there is an onsite bar and restaurant open in the evenings. Smith Creek Station is an area with shopping and restaurants just a few steps from the hotel. A chain hotel often doesn’t have the charm of a historic property, but you know exactly what to expect based on the brand and that can be a comfortable feeling when visiting a new town.

I just love Wilmington and found it the perfect destination to have a fantastic weekend getaway. My visit was just a few days, but I could have easily spent a week as there is so much to see and do.

20 Best Things to Do in Wilmington, NC (See, Eat, Drink, Stay)

Wilmington was our first real getaway from Raleigh when we first moved to North Carolina in 2004 and we instantly fell for its charm, history and beautiful riverfront location.

Although a port city with a coastal location, those venturing to Wilmington should not just use it as a base for exploring the nearby beaches, as it turns out there’s no shortage of fun things to do in Wilmington, NC!

Historic downtown street in Wilmington NC

Growing up in Australia, we were fans of Dawson’s Creek and One Tree Hill (both filmed in Wilmington), and that’s how we first came to know of this historical port city and have since visited several times.

Wilmington has plenty to offer; from its historic architecture to a bustling riverfront atmosphere. It offers warm, Southern hospitality and a laid-back vibe. It’s the perfect vacation destination in NC – here’s what you can do in the city.

20. Catch a Show at Thalian Hall Center for the Performing Arts

Wake n’ bake donuts, things to do in wilmington nc.

Historic Southern Home

Park your car at the hotel, you won’t need it for most of the time exploring downtown Wilmington. We just love destinations where we can walk everywhere!

Then get ready to explore the city’s National Register Historic District which spans 230-plus blocks of churches, classic architecture, moss-draped live oaks, brick-lined streets and historic homes.

1. Coffee at Bespoke Coffee & Dry Goods

Three girls walking across a street to a coffee shop

Whenever we visit Wilmington or pass through on road trips we always stop at Bespoke Coffee who makes our favorite coffee in the city.

Not only is their coffee good but the space is aesthetically pleasing with a black and white modern design that invites you to sit for a while – locals tend to gravitate here with their laptops and work online.

Mother and daughter sitting at a table in a coffee shop

There is a Triangle area connection here too! They use Durham’s Counter Culture Coffee, and if you’ve got young kids, ours enjoys their hot chocolates and smoothies, and our teen their chai latte.

2. Explore Wilmington Riverwalk

girls walking along wilmington riverfront boardwalk

We miss being by the water having grown up in Australia and so our favorite activity in Wilmington is to simply stroll along the pedestrian-friendly Riverwalk lined with shops and cafes and the Port City Marina.

The Wilmington Boardwalk is 1.75 miles long , but you don’t have to walk that far and I recommend you at least do the section from Market Street to Nun Street to get a close up view of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge.

Man walking along a boardwalk next to a river

We then like to double back on S Front Street to access some of the downtown area’s favorite historical shops, colorful buildings and restaurants.

You can also walk the Riverwalk to Market Street (about a 15-minute walk) and enjoy views of the Battleship North Carolina (also known as USS North Carolina) across the river.

Couple taking a photo with a bridge in the background

Hot Tip:  Wilmington takes awhile to wake up so take advantage of the early hours to have the riverfront area almost all to yourself (easy to do when you stay overnight on the Riverfront).

3. Take a Horsedrawn Carriage Ride of Historic Wilmington

Two horses pulling a carriage

A relaxing and great way to start your trip to Wilmington is to take a horse drawn carriage ride through historic downtown Wilmington and learn about the history of this port city.

We learned that 30 years ago this district was dilapidated and you could have bought a house for around $10,000 – but you’d need cash as no bank was willing to loan money for this run down area!

Historic Southern home in Wilmington, NC

So, the people came together to call it a historic district which then gave them access to federal money and grants to restore the buildings and fast forward to today and now it’s an expensive and well-sought area to live.

Black plaques on homes signify they are over 100 years old , and anything new that now gets built in downtown Wilmington must blend in with the historic look and feel.

Historic home with overhanging tree

You’ll learn all of this and more on one of eight different routes. Prominent homes we passed were the oldest home in Wilmington (284 years old) and the childhood home of President Woodrow Wilson.

NOTE: If you’re wondering about the wellbeing of the horses, the horses are well looked after, ours were two rescue horses from Amish County in Philadelphia. The tour company, Springbrook Farms has saved 18 draft horses in their 35 years of business.

  • Reservations are not needed for the tour.

4. Sightseeing Cruise of the Cape Fear River

Lady taking a photo of the river and buildings in background

When you visit a port city on a river, I highly recommend you get a perspective from the water. In Wilmington, we enjoyed a relaxing hour onboard a sightseeing Cruise with Cape Fear River Boats .

The Captain J.N. Maffit boat tour took us upriver to where the Cape Fear River forks before turning back south past the pastel-colored shops and historical buildings of Downtown Wilmington on our left, and Battleship North Carolina on our right.

Restarants and houses along the riverfront

Commentary included a brief overview of Wilmington’s history from the early explorers to Modern day ships from all over the world, and also learned more about the geography of the region, including the fascinating story of Eagle Island – it was once filled with rice fields until river dredging turned the freshwater to salt and destroyed the industry.

We learned about more recent history too. Since the 1980s, Wilmington has been an active film production hub, supporting feature films, TV shows, and independent productions and is known as “Hollywood East” or “Wilmywood” to the locals.

Lastly, we got a good look at the shipping industry that gives Wilmington the name, Port City.

Bridge spanning across a river

If you’re wondering how the Cape Fear River got its name, old merchants would notice the approaching shallow cape and would turn their boats around, only to run aground on the shoals. They would list on their charts that it was a Cape to be Feared.

5. Check Out The Bellamy Mansion Museum

Front of a white historic Southern mansion

Embark on a self-guided audio tour of the 10,000 sq. ft and 22 room Bellamy Mansion that was built primarily by enslaved and free black artisans for the Bellamy family from 1859 to 1861.

They do retell the story tastefully and do a good job of sharing the truth of the slave story and help develop that understanding and empathy.

The tour begins outside the mansion and then moves to the two-story brick, slave quarters – one of the best preservered ones in the country. You then move up the five levels of the home to see how the Bellamy family lived.

The elaborate parlor room is impressive, as was the Belvedere, the small room that was responsible for creating natural air conditioning by capturing the natural breeze and sending it down to the rest of the house.

The magnificent magnolia tree at the side of the house in the small garden offers a peaceful place to rest under its shade.

All up it took us about one hour to tour by ourselves, but you can join a 90-minute guided tour.

Even our kids enjoyed this property and I feel it’s a worthy family-friendly experience and recommend you add it to your list of Wilmington things to do.

6. Tour the Battleship North Carolina

Girl onboard a navy war ship

If you’re traveling with kids in Wilmington, then one of the most popular attractions for kids in Wilmington is the tour of the Battleship NORTH CAROLINA, one of the first of ten battleships to join the American fleet in WWII.

In case you don’t know, during World War II North Carolina participated in every major naval offensive in the Pacific area of operations and earned 15 battle stars.

Child pretending to shoot a gun on a navy war ship

This battleship was considered the world’s greatest navy ship and you’ll be mesmerized exploring the ship and seeing the sailor’s and officer’s quarters and mess hall, as well as the vast amount of artillery on the expansive deck.

You can tour 9 different levels and arrows guide you along the self-guided tour. See the engine room and learn about navigation!

Mother and dughter exploring a navy war ship

Off the ship, be sure to walk around the perimeter on the SECU Memorial Walkway – you may even see an alligator or two! The views of Downtown Wilmington opposite the river are impressive.

Allow at least an hour here, but if you’re really into Navy ships you could easily spend several hours.

7. Explore the Museum of the Bizarre

Child standing next to a shark poster at a museum

If you like to visit quirky and unique museums, put the Museum of the Bizarre on your itinerary, and if you have a teen like us, she found it particularly interesting!

You only need about 30-60 minutes to tour this small museum in downtown Wilmington which focuses on the strange, unusual or collectable oddity.

On display are life-size movie characters, artifacts like Alexander Hamilton’s hair and Houdini’s ouija board, shrunken heads, bizarre creatures from the Circus like the goat brothers, a cast model of Regan from the exorcist, and a real life cauldron discovered in Pennsylvania that without warning blasts out a fiery steam to make you jump.

Another fun element is the laser trail game and mirror maze with fun music we danced away too as we slowly made our way through the confusing hall of mirrors.

8. Go Shopping in Downtown Wilmington

Mother and two daughters outside a dress store

For those that like to browse stories and do a spot of shopping, there is a good selection of local stores in the downtown area and beyond to just wander around.

During your walk along the Riverfront, keep an eye out for the small City Market, a historic landmark and retail destination since 1880. There’s a melange of specialty shops as well as art and craft galleries inside.

Pop into City Gypsy Boutique who sell unique art from over 30 local artisans, fair trade, and boutique items including apparel, accessories, jewelry, crystals, pottery, and home décor, and much more!

Outside of an old historic shopping mall

Also in downtown Wilmington is the Cotton Exchange which is housed within eight restored buildings connected by brick walkways and an open-air courtyard giving a 19th Century Port City vibe from when Cotton was King – there are 30 unique specialty shops and restaurants.

9. Relax in Airlie Gardens

live oak tree in garden

If you love gardens, you can get lost among the the 67 acre private garden, Airlie Gardens, consisting of formal gardens, walking trails, seasonal blooms, centuries-old oak trees, artistic sculptures and peaceful waterways.

Over 200 species of birds have been observed within the gardens, and don’t miss the famous Airlie Oak (c.1545), the largest Live Oak in North Carolina at 128 feet high.

You can also enjoy a seasonal Summer Concert Series and the holiday favorite Enchanted Airlie.

Spring time is a great time to visit these gardens, as they have 75,000 azaleas that bloom fro  mid-March through mid-April – a site well worth seeing, and smelling!

10. Admire the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden

If you’re looking for a hidden gem that not many tourists know about, then I present to you the Stanley Rehder Carnivorous Plant Garden .

This is exactly what it says on the tin; it’s a garden full of carnivorous plants.

Set on approximately 0.728 acres of land, this tiny garden features only plants that get their nutrients from small animals and protozoans, such as Venus Flytraps, Pitcher Plants and Sundews.

It opened in 2011 and is accessible by walking the Gary Shell Cross-City Trail in the Piney Ridge Nature Reserve. There is a boardwalk that runs through the garden where you can admire the plants from a safe distance, and plenty of signage telling you what you’re looking at.

There’s no entrance fee and no staff managing the garden. If you have kids, make sure they look but don’t touch the plants!

11. Get Lost in Brooklyn Arts District

An historic church

Located on the historic north side of downtown Wilmington, the Brooklyn Arts District is anchored by the Brooklyn Arts Center + The Annex.

Our local friend who lives in nearby Carolina Beach took us for a quick tour of this neighborhood and we’d love to explore more.

Originally constructed in 1888 as St. Andrews Church, the Brooklyn Arts Center was the center of Wilmington’s Brooklyn neighborhood for nearly a century and St. Andrews school building was completed in 1910.

things to do in wilmington 3

Today, both buildings have been restored and refurbished as an event venue that plays host to live music and concerts, weddings, art shows and vintage flea markets.

Whilst here, be sure to pop into Edward Teach Brewing for a pint of beer. Housed in an historic building that was originally built as a fire engine house, and has also been used as a boxing gym and a police station – there’s a nice outdoor patio area too.

Ice cream cone

And, just up the road is the local’s favorite ice cream joint, Boombalatti’s Homemade Ice Cream which was a hit with our kids!

12. Wander Around the Cargo District

A mural outside a neighborhood district

This is a cool and evolving neighborhood in Wilmington. It gets its name due to the business being housed inside reused shipping containers and they’ve done a very creative job with the design.

Explore a variety of shopping and dining establishments including End of Days Distillery , Wilmington’s very first craft distillery.

Take a seat – inside or out – in the communal dining courtyard and choose from eight rotating taps at Alcove Beer Garden .

People sitting outside a cafe having lunch

Or, grab a coffee or tea at the Blue Cup Roastery , dine at Mess Hall , which offers a variety of burgers and tasty vegan options, and stop by Cheesesmith for artisanal grilled cheese sandwiches.

People exploring an outdoor market

During our visit there was also an outdoor market plus live music. This neighborhood reminds me of a similar concept called Container Park in downtown Las Vegas.

13. Catch A Sunset on the River

People having dinner outside during sunset

One of the best free things to do in Wilmington is to watch the sunset down by the Wilmington Riverfront, an activity we’ve been doing as a family for years.

You have a few options; the free option is to stroll along the boardwalk and find a spot to watch the sun go down over the river, or you can eat at any of the Wilmington restaurants along the riverfront, or take a sunset cruise.

Be sure to book ahead for one of the restaurants, especially on a weekend or holiday period, as they do get busy and some won’t take you in unless you are eating.

Lading enjoying a glass of wine

One place we have eaten at many times is Elijah’s Restaurant and they have an affordable kids menu.

We did, however, manage to get a small cocktail table on the deck of the beautifully restored Pilot House Rest to enjoy a sunset drink. Although we had to get our own drinks from the bar, a minor inconvenience to watch the beautiful sunset.

14. Relax at A Brewery in Wilmington

A couple enjoying drinks at a brewery

With 20+ breweries in the Wilmington area, beer lovers are not short of a spot for a good pint.

Flytrap is a popular neighborhood brewery in the booming Brooklyn Arts District – you’ll find some local art hanging on the walls! It’s a family-friendly brewery with a large outdoor beer garden and a lovely spot to rest with an ice cold local brew.

Hand holding up a beer in a beer garden

They specialize in American and Belgian style ales, and I thoroughly enjoyed their light and refreshing Belgian Blonde.

They also have unique natural wines and flavored sparkling waters for the kids.

Front Street Brewery also serves up quality craft beers, as does the aforementioned Edward Teach Brewing (you can walk here from Flytrap).

Flying Machine Brewing and Wilmington Brewing Company are on my list for when we return. For a full list of breweries go here.

15. Explore the Wilmington Beaches

Wilmington is near three beautiful beaches in North Carolina and once you’re done with the riverfront, one of the most popular things to do in Wilmington is hit up the nearby beaches and take in the serene auro of the Atlantic Ocean.

Our favorite is Wrightsville Beach, but Carolina Beach to the south is also colorful and very family-friendly. So is Kure Beach and Masonboro Island.

Each beach location has great options for food, and various beach activities you can do like paddle boarding and surfing lessons.

Wrightsville Beach

an aerial view of wrightsville Island with buildings and the beach on one side and the sound on the other

The closest beach to Raleigh and just 12-miles from downtown Wilmington, Wrightsville is our favorite beach that reminds us so much of back home in Australia.

Known for its laid back coastal living , this is a barrier island (4-miles long) and offers all your beach activities plus watersports on the intracoastal waterway, not to mention some excellent restaurants and bars.

Carolina Beach

Ocean Grill & Tiki Bar, Carolina Beach

Carolina Beach is one of the best family beaches in North Carolina with its famous wooden beach-side boardwalk, restaurants and amusement rides, craft coffees, tiki bars and summer concerts.

This Carolina beach town pops with color and is a fun-loving and free-spirited family destination just 20-minutes from downtown Wilmington.

If you enjoy hiking, there are a few beautiful walks in the Carolina Beach State Park, which are a combination of forest and beach walks. The entire Cape Fear area is full of natural beauty, not just the beach.

16. Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

girl walking through Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

Located just 18 miles south of Wilmington is the Fort Fisher State Recreation Area . This state park is known for its ruins of Fort Fisher, a former battlement that played a major role during the American Civil War.

It’s also an adventurers playground. You can go four-wheel driving along the beach, walk along the trails through the salt marshes, surf from the beach, or go camping.

In the warm months, the beach is also known to be a nesting ground for loggerhead sea turtles.

17. Cool Off at Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park

On a hot summers day, the best place to cool off is at Jungle Rapids, a water park and amusement park in Wilmington. The park is only open from May to September, so check the park’s website before visiting for opening hours.

Zip down water slides, challenge your friends to a game of laser tag, or compete in a game of mini-golf. There are also go-karts, mini bowling, and a rock climbing wall.

Gourmet Burgers at Platypus & Gnome

Hamburger and fries

As an Australian, how can I pass up the opportunity to dine at a restaurant named after one of our favorite native animals, and what makes this a worthy place to eat in Wilmington is its unique focus on exotic game meats and burgers!

Menu favorites include wild boar, elk and bison. We ordered the two most popular items on the menu: the elk burger and the ostrich sandwich , and our teen enjoyed her juicy Bacon Bacon burger .

And, the smoky wild boar soup was delicious, choose to have a bowl for an appetizer or sub it in as your main meal’s side for an extra price.

They even have our favorite Aussie meat, kangaroo on the menu occasionally – we missed it by a week.

NOTE: they have extensive gluten free options, almost every item on the menu could be adapted, even with gluten free chicken tenders for the kids!

Seabird Restaurant

People sitting at a bar

The fact that we couldn’t get a table at Seabird tells you that this is one of the best restaurants in Wilmington, and came highly recommended by our Instagram followers when we put the call out for recommendations.

This historic downtown Wilmington restaurant has a focus on a seasonal seafood menu with ingredients found in North Carolina.

Tastefully decorated and a modern space with full-length subway tiles, blue toned aquatic artwork on the walls, porthole windows on the swinging doors into the kitchen, and blue upholstered chairs.

While we didn’t eat here, we did find a way to experience Seabird – we were thrilled to discover that they’re another great coffee option in Wilmington with baristas who know how to make a proper latte, so snuck back one morning. And, they use Counter Culture Coffee from Durham.

Seabird has a limited breakfast menu plus grab-and-go biscuits and pastries. Book ahead for dining in.

Tacos at Beer Barrio

People having lunch outsie at a restaurant

If you love tacos and margaritas, grab a seat at one of the colorful tables on the sidewalk (or indoors) and enjoy this craft-beer infused Mexican restaurant.

With choices like a catfish po’boy and beer braised beef tacos and pulled pork on your nachos, bowls and burritos, there’s a Southern flair. And the food is colorful, affordable, and unusually large for a taco!

Beer is the other focus of this restaurant with a local brew finding its way into almost every dish!

And, they even had a delicious French toast dish on the brunch menu which our exceptionally fussy tween eater devoured. Note: Sundays has an all-day brunch menu.

Indochine Restaurant

Gazebo and outdoor garden at a restaurant

Speaking of popular restaurants, you won’t find a more in-demand Wilmington restaurant than Indochine, a Thai and Vietnamese restaurant located a 10-minute drive from historic downtown.

We’ve attempted to eat here twice now, with no booking, and the wait time was estimated at 2-3 hours each time. As we were driving back to Raleigh both evenings, that was too long so opted for takeout.

Hand holding up a beer in a garden

We lived in Bangkok for 6 months teaching English and LOVE Thai food and were excited to put Indochine to the test, and while waiting for our order did a walk through of the interior and exterior and the exotic, art-filled setting with a gorgeous outdoor garden and gazebo area it took us back to our days in Thailand.

Let us know if you’ve dined at Indochine in the comments? Next time we’ll make a booking well ahead of time, and recommend you do too!

Besides the aforementioned Boombalatti’s, the other local favorite ice cream shop is Kilwins and you can’t escape the irresistible smell as you wander past on Market St towards the riverfront, your kids will drag you in there in an instant.

We’ve been taking our 14 year old to Kilwins since she was two, so it’s a very nostalgic place for us to revisit with each trip to Wilmington.

Where to Stay in Wilmington

Hotel on the banks of a river

If you are looking for accommodation in Wilmington, our hotel of choice is typically the Embassy Suites by Hilton Riverfront . It’s possibly the nicest of the Embassy Suites we’ve stayed in, modern and stylishly decorated.

The location is great, an easy 10-minute walk to downtown along the riverfront, and your stay comes with a buffet breakfast that has a decent array of offerings including omelet’s made to order, pancakes, grits and pastries.

Their suites are spacious and great for families like ours, and if you work remotely you’ll appreciate the living room/office space.

Family having breakfast with a river view

They also have afternoon happy hours, where you can get two drinks, including standard well drinks, and the Cloud 9 Rooftop bar is a top spot for sunset drinks and panoramic views over the river. See current rates here.

You can read our full review of the Embassy Suites Wilmington Riverfront (includes more photos!)

For other hotels in Wilmington, we liked the look of The Ballast Hotel a block up the river and a little more expensive. The Aloft and Best Western were also next door to the Embassy and looked good – location wise at least!

And, if you want to stay in Wrightsville Beach and drive into Wilmington, you can’t beat the Blockade Runner Beach Resort for the ultimate beach vacation!

Besides a fetching wraparound porch, it also has a colossal colonnade, while its 22 rooms are decked with period pieces and glittering golden gas chandeliers.

Five months after Trump missed his scheduled visit to the Port City after severe weather, the Republican nominee for president is expected to host a rally in New Hanover County this weekend.

Less than a week after the former President faced a second assassination attempt in West Palm Beach, Florida, Wilmington is still included on Trump's campaign schedule . Here's what you need to know about Trump's upcoming visit and what to anticipate.

Where to get tickets

Those interested in attending the rally can register for up to two free tickets on the event webpage using their mobile number. All tickets are subject to a first come, first serve basis.

What to expect

The rally will be held on the grounds of the Wilmington International Airport at the Aero Center, located at 1830 Flightline Road, Wilmington.

On Saturday, doors at the Aero Center are expected to open at 10 a.m., with the event expected to begin at 2 p.m., according to the event webpage.

Thousands arrived at the Aero Center for Trump's rally in April 2024, which was ultimately rescheduled as a result of severe weather. Visitors also crowded the same venue in 2022 for the "Save America" rally where Trump delivered a speech.

Security and traffic

While specifics could not be disclosed for safety reasons, Lt. Jerry Brewer confirmed that the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is coordinating with federal agencies to provide security for the rally.

As of Tuesday, the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office had not been made aware of any anticipated detours or road closures on Saturday, Brewer said.

Representatives with the Wilmington Aero Center did not comment on expected security measures on site, citing only that the space has been rented for the rally.

In the aftermath of the most recent assassination attempt, President Joe Biden "vowed to make sure the Secret Service has every resource" for  Trump's safety , adding "there is no place for political violence."
