Tourist Police celebrated its 45th anniversary

Tourism Mail

Jan 26, 2024

KATHMANDU, Jan 26:The Tourist Police marked its 45th anniversary. On Friday, the Tourist Police marked the occasion by hosting a program at the Nepal Tourism Board's office in Bhrikutimanda, Kathmandu.

Sudan Kirati, the program's chief guest and Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, stated that tourist safety is the most important factor in tourism development. "Tourist police are friends of tourists," he said, adding that the work of the tourist police is vital in ensuring tourists' safety and making their stay in Nepal enjoyable by informing them of Nepal's norms and regulations.

He further stated that since tourism can produce so many jobs, everyone should work on boosting Nepali tourism.

Similarly, Binayak Shah, President of the Hotel Association Nepal (HAN), has stated that the country's peace and security will have a significant impact on the development of tourism. He thanked the Nepal Tourism Police for their outstanding job to ensure the safety of tourists. "By changing the practice of tourist police being mobilized only after a written complaint is received by the tourist police, they can take immediate action as soon as a problem arises so that both tourists and businessmen can get services at the right time," he said, added that they should look into the matter.

During the program, General of Police Basant Bahadur Kunwar discussed how the work done by the tourist police in various tourist areas of the country for service facilities and complaint management of tourists is commendable, and how the police personnel involved should be determined to improve the level of service delivery in the future.

Noting that Nepal is not only beautiful but also safe, Inspector General of Police Kunwar stated, "Our goal is to ensure that our domestic citizens who enjoy domestic tourism, as well as any foreign guests who visit Nepal, have a positive experience." It is to have a professional remedy for the challenges.

DSP Narendra Kuwar, Chief of Tourist Police Unit, welcomed the attendees and provided information about the Tourist Police's establishment and operations. He stated that the tourist police, founded with the original slogan of ''for the safety of tourists, tourism police,'' continues to function with the same vigilance even in the lack of various resources.

Tourism Secretary Dr. Deepak Kafle, Director General of Department of Tourism Chakra Bahadur Budha, , and others all gave their greetings.

Pokhara’s tranquil beauty has been the subject of inspiration for many travel writers. Its pristine air, spectacular backdrop of snowy peaks, blue lakes and surrounding greenery make it ‘the jewel in the Himalaya’, a place of remarkable natural disposition. With the magnificent Annapurna range forming the backdrop and the serenity of the Cluster of 9 Lakes with three major ones - Phewa, Rupa and Begnas – Pokhara is a great destination for a weekend getaway as well as a long relaxing holiday. Pokhara Valley, gateway to the Annapurna region where many a trekker finds his Shangri-la, sits high on the list of ‘must visit’ places in Nepal.

Pokhara once lay on the important trade route between India and Tibet. To this day, mule trains set up camps on the city outskirts, bringing goods from remote Himalayan regions including Mustang. Gurungs and Magars, who have earned world-wide fame as fierce Gurkha warriors, are predominant here. Thakalis, indigenous of the Thak Khola region of Mustang , are known for their entrepreneurship and run tea houses along the trek routes in the Annapurna region . The Pokhara is best known for the stunning view of the Annapurna range. It is perhaps one of the few places on earth from where mountains above 6,000 m can be seen unobstructed from an altitude of 800 m within the distance of 28 km.

Many find Machhapuchhre's razor-edged "Fish Tail" peak piercing the skyline or reflected in the still waters of Phewa Lake to be their most lasting impression of Nepal. Pokhara Valley has in recent years grown as a destination for adventure sports such as paragliding and ultra-light aircraft flights. And with boating, bird watching, trekking and mountain biking as other attractions, Pokhara has it all.

Pokhara is warmer than Kathmandu. Summers are warm and humid while winters are mild and pleasant.

ACCESS/ ACCOMMODATION

One can fly directly into Pokhara from Kathmandu. One can also take a bus or drive to Pokhara from the border towns. Accommodation in Pokhara ranges from luxurious world-class hotels and resorts that provide modern services and amenities to comfortable lodges with basic amenities.

Places to see in Pokhara

Phewa and cluster of 9 lakes, davis fall & gupteshwar, mahendra gupha, world peace pagoda, old bazaar & bindyabasini, things to do in pokhara, boating & kayaking, accessible trail, birdwatching, ultralight flights, accessible tourism trail.

Tourism police training for special service

tourist police in nepal

The ' tourism police training ' has kicked off here in a bid to provide special service to the foreign tourists in Nepal.

The 18-day training began in Kathmandu in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation; Tourism Police Office, Bhrikutimandap; and Nepal Tourism and Hotel Management Institute.

The event was inaugurated by Ministry Secretary Bharat Mani Subedi. He hoped the training would be a significant platform to learn on how foreign tourists could be provided special services. Professional capacity will be built among the tourism police so that they play a role to retain the unique identity of the country and people. The concept of 'Atithi Devo Bhava' will be further enhanced, Secretary added.

Deputy Inspector General of Nepal Police who is also the Director of National Police Academy , Rabindra KC, said the trainees would be devoted to their work and help bolster the country's image. He lauded that tourism police were playing an important role in the security of tourists despite limited means and resources.

Similarly, Director General at Tourism Department, Hom Prasad Luitel, viewed the tourism sector plays a vital role  in boosting the country's economic activities where the tourism police can be linked.

Travel and Research Department Chief of Nepal Tourism and Hotel Management Institute, Ajay Kumar Dhakal, believed the training would be a milestone to the development and promotion of tourism .

A total of 30 police persons are attending the training.

Dual Role Of Traffic Police

blog

Pallav Bhusal

In the chaotic maze of Kathmandu's streets, where the hustle and bustle of daily life merges with the constant flow of vehicles, the role of traffic police is pivotal. Positioned as guardians of order amidst the chaos, they wield authority over the ebb and flow of traffic. However, their influence extends beyond mere regulation. It encompasses both positive and negative aspects, shaping the city's dynamics in profound ways.

On the positive side, the presence of traffic police helps ensure safety in an environment often fraught with risks. Kathmandu's roads are notorious for their congestion and lack of adherence to traffic rules, posing significant hazards to commuters. In this context, traffic police play a crucial role in managing the flow of vehicles, minimising accidents, and ensuring the safety of pedestrians. Their visibility acts as a deterrent against reckless driving behaviour, thereby fostering a sense of responsibility among motorists.

Moreover, traffic police contribute to the efficiency of transportation networks by strategically managing intersections and traffic flow. Through their expertise in directing vehicles, they mitigate congestion hotspots, easing the burden on commuters and reducing travel times. This proactive approach not only enhances the overall mobility within the city but also reflects a commitment to improving urban infrastructure.

However, alongside these commendable efforts, the role of traffic police in Kathmandu also encompasses darker shades that warrant scrutiny. The enforcement of traffic regulations often appears arbitrary and inconsistent, leaving room for favouritism and exploitation. While some motorists face strict penalties for minor infractions, others seemingly flout the rules with impunity, raising questions about the fairness and impartiality of law enforcement. This selective application of justice not only breeds resentment among citizens but also perpetuates a sense of injustice and inequality.

Additionally, the efficacy of traffic management measures implemented by the authorities is sometimes called into question. Despite concerted efforts to regulate traffic flow, congestion remains a persistent issue in Kathmandu. Inadequate infrastructure, coupled with rapid urbanisation, poses formidable challenges that cannot be addressed through traditional policing alone. Thus, there is a pressing need for holistic approaches that integrate technological solutions, urban planning initiatives, and community engagement to tackle the root causes of congestion and improve mobility citywide.

In light of these complexities, it is evident that the role of traffic police is multifaceted, encompassing both positive contributions and areas for improvement. While they play a crucial role in maintaining order and safety on the roads, issues such as corruption, inconsistency, and inefficiency demand urgent attention. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders, including policymakers, law enforcement agencies, civil society organisations, and citizens themselves.

Moving forward, there is a need for greater transparency, accountability, and professionalism within the traffic police force. Training programmes should prioritise ethics, integrity, and community-oriented policing to instil a culture of service and responsibility. Moreover, investment in modern technology and infrastructure is essential to enhance the efficacy of traffic management initiatives and alleviate congestion.

Ultimately, the goal should be to create a transportation system that is not only safe and efficient but also equitable and inclusive. By reimagining the role of traffic police within this broader context, Kathmandu can pave the way towards a more sustainable and resilient urban future.

Tourist couple injured in militant shooting in India's Kashmir amid elections

I ndia, May 19 -- A tourist couple was injured in India's Kashmir after militants fired on them late on Saturday night, police said, ahead of voting scheduled in the volatile region for India's ongoing election.

The couple from the Indian city of Jaipur was evacuated to the hospital and the area where the attack took place was cordoned off, Kashmir police said on social media. The condition of the injured tourists is said to be stable, they said.

India is in the middle of a marathon election with the remaining two seats in Kashmir going to polls on May 20 and May 25.

Voters turned out in large numbers for polling in the first seat in Srinagar on May 13, reversing the trend of low vote counts in the first polls since Prime Minister Narendra Modi removed the region's semi-autonomy in 2019.

Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is skipping elections in Kashmir for the first time since 1996 saying it will support regional parties instead.

Major parties in Kashmir, the National Conference and People's Democratic Party (PDP), have focused on restoration of semi-autonomy in their campaigns.

Analysts and opposition parties say the BJP is not contesting elections in Kashmir because it fears the outcome will contradict its narrative of a more peaceful and integrated region since 2019.

In a separate incident, unknown militants shot dead former village headman and BJP party member Ajiaz Ahmad Sheikh in Shopian district on Saturday.

The last major attack on tourists in Kashmir had happened in 2017 when a Hindu pilgrimage bus was targeted, killing eight people.
