Day 5 - Bungle Bungle to Kununurra

Wake to the symphony of birds in their native surroundings and enjoy a cooked breakfast before starting the day.  For a different view of the Bungle Bungle, today’s tour will take you through Echidna Chasm and the northern end of Purnululu National Park.

This tour begins with a 45-60 minute drive heading north along the Western Wall of the Bungle Bungle Range. On arrival follow your local guide along a rocky path nestled between cliffs into Echidna Chasm.  At points, this path can narrow to a width of less than 1.5 metres.  On either side of you, towering walls of orange stone scattered with Livistona Palm trees will reach skywards, seeming as though they are lit from within.

As this walk requires a significant amount of climbing over boulders and navigating stairs, we advise that this tour be embarked upon by those with full mobility. The walking component of this tour is approximately 3 hours long. Whilst out and about, enjoy a tasty picnic lunch.

After your tour, board your plane and continue return via a scenic flight back to Kununurra.  Fly over the Argyle Diamond Mine, Bow River, Lake Argyle and the Ord Irrigation Area.  Touch down in Kununurra and be transferred to your accommodation.

Check-in and relax for the evening.  You may like to book into The PumpHouse Restaurant located on the water of Lake Kununurra for dinner.

** Meals: Breakfast, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea

Enjoy a morning at your leisure relaxing by the pool.  You might prefer to take a walk through Celebrity Tree park or into town.

You will be collected from your accommodation at 11:30am and taken by coach through Durack country to Lake Argyle (70km).  As you near Lake Argyle, we will take a short break at the historic Durack Homestead Museum. This museum was constructed as a replica of the original family homestead that was submerged when the Dam was originally built.  This version uses the original homestead stone.

Re-boarding the coach, drive the short distance to Lake Argyle Resort before viewing the enormous Lake Argyle from a scenic look out.  Crossing the Ord Top Dam wall guests will see the Ord Hydro Power Station before boarding their boat for a scenic 55km cruise back to Kununurra.

Marvel at the spectacular scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna found along the way, including the elusive freshwater crocodile! Enjoy afternoon tea at a private riverside camp before heading back to Kununurra.  Take in a colourful East Kimberley sunset before docking back at the marina and re-boarding your coach for your accommodation drop off at around 6:00pm.

Day 7 - Mitchell Falls

An early start with a complimentary pick up from at approximately 5:15am by Aviair.  A light breakfast is offered on check-in at the terminal.

Your scenic flight will depart at 6:00am taking you over the Ord River Irrigation Area, Carlton Hill Station, Wyndham and the Cambridge Gulf before reaching the coast.

Along the way you will witness stunning views of beautifully patterned mud flats near Wyndham, as well as the magnificent King River, Berkeley River Gorge, King George Falls and Kalumburu. This flight touches down at the remote Mitchell Plateau Airstrip where you disembark and board HeliSpirits’ helicopter that will transfer you from the airstrip to the beginning of the walk to the Mitchell Falls.

Follow your tour guide on a challenging 4.5km hike to the stunning Mitchell Falls.  Experience the different eco systems the plateau has to offer, view ancient aboriginal rock art and marvel at Little and Big Mertens falls. The hike can be challenging at points, with uneven tracks and river crossings, so there is an option to take a helicopter transfer straight from the airstrip to the falls at no additional cost.  This must be booked in advance though.

Once arriving at the falls, you will have time to marvel at their beauty.  Take a swim in the Mitchell River above the falls and enjoy a fresh picnic style lunch.

You will be transferred via helicopter from the top of the falls back to the airstrip, where you will board your return flight to Kununurra.  On the flight home, you will pass over King Edward River,  remote cattle stations and the Cockburn Ranges before touching town in Kununurra.

** Meals: Light breakfast and a packed picnic lunch and snacks included

In Broome the traveller will find a unique and multicultural town. Originally known for its pearling history, Broome is fast becoming a cosmopoltian town. With its many Kimberley characters and Asian influences, Broome is an outback town with a difference.

Spend time wandering around Chinatown with its many art galleries, cafes and historical buildings. Broome is known for its famous Cable Beach – white sand stretching for more than 20 kilometres.

BROOME to KUNUNURRA via Gibb River Road

EXPEDITION SUMMARY

Broome to Kununurra over 13 days along the famous Gibb River Road. This is very early in the season and an ambitious adventure for those with an open mind and up for a challenge. Road closures may prevent us getting to some destinations north of the GRR. A route that sees us trying to get to places in the north that may not be accessible, but we’ll give it a crack. It will require some flexibility and undoubtedly some unplanned outcomes. The northern goal being Mitchell Falls and McGowans Beach, enroute we’ll stay at  Bells Gorge and Drysdale River Station. If the road is impassable we’ll stay on the GRR and experience the Kimberley Station life at Ellenbrae and Home Valley.

A GRR trip is incomplete without staying at El Questro Station for a couple of nights where we’ll have the opportunity to explore this magnificent outback property. An opportunity to fish for Barramundi and swim in some amazing waterholes like Emma Gorge. This trip culminates with an overnight stop at Lake Argyle and the Ord Valley Muster’s ‘Moon Experience’ in Kununurra, one of the regions biggest festivals.

Here’s our expedition map noting destinations we are planning to explore. Hadagutful may also find detours along the way.

Kununurra to Broome via Gibb River Road

Travel & Touring  |  WA Road Trips

By: Chris Morton

The Kimberley region of Western Australia is considered one of the world’s last great wildernesses areas.

Its ancient landscapes are bejewelled with spectacular gorges, waterfalls and vistas not found anywhere else on earth.

For many people, an adventure through the Kimberley is high on their bucket list.

Central to any visit into the region, the Gibb River Road  winds its way between natural wonder after natural wonder, delighting the senses at every turn. The best way to experience “the Gibb” is by road and although not as arduous as it used to be, it’s not a road trip to be undertaken lightly.

A road trip map from Kununurra to Broome

What you'll need to know

Due to the Kimberley’s remoteness, ensure you plan and take precautions. Saltwater crocodiles inhabit many waterways (salt and freshwater). Road surfaces can be unpredictable. Drivers should keep their speeds down and take extra care if overtaking. If emergency services need to get to you by road, keep in mind that it is going to take them about the same amount of time it took you to drive to where you are. This is a four-wheel drive only track and a harsh one at that, so make sure your vehicle is well serviced and up to the task.

Corrugated roads and water crossings will slow any vehicle response down considerably and helicopter access can also be limited. Ensure you take adequate precautions, have a well-equipped and fully stocked first aid kit (and know how to use it) and carry adequate food and water for any unforeseen emergency. Consider hiring a satellite phone or getting yourself a satellite communicator for your trip as there is no mobile coverage.

The Kimberley is also home to venomous snakes and crocodiles. You will see crocodiles in the wild, both fresh and saltwater. Never assume any water hole or river is safe to swim in unless advised that it is safe to do so by local authorities. Do not loiter near the water’s edge in areas where there are saltwater crocodiles present and ensure that you know your children’s whereabouts at all times.

Day one: Kununurra to Wyndham (106km)

For many a trip to the Kimberley includes tackling the iconic Gibb River Road, usually starting in Broome before heading to Derby, along the Gibb and finishing in Kununurra. Tackling it from east to west however gives you the added benefit of finishing your adventure on the ocean.

This guide will make the assumption that you have allowed enough time to explore Kununurra and everything it has to offer and are setting out west. Before commencing along the Gibb, it is highly recommended to drive the one hour north to the historic town of Wyndham.

Book in at Parry Creek Farm before heading into town. Established in 1886 on the Cambridge Gulf, you can soak up the view of five rivers converging or wander through the historic town. Back out of town explore “The Grotto” and then end the day at Telegraph Hill, overlooking the beautiful Marglu Billabong.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by 𝐒𝐎𝐁 (@sliceofblisss)

Day two: Wyndham to El Questro Station (100km)

Head south and then make your way to the Gibb River Road. El Questro  offers a range of accommodation options and is a great place to base yourself. Explore Emma Gorge or soak in the thermal waters at Zebedee Springs.

Day three: El Questro to Home Valley Station (60km)

This 700,000 acre property is a working cattle station and offers a range of activities. With several rivers cutting through it, there are plenty of opportunities to explore gorges and water holes, fish for barramundi or just experience the ancient Cockburn Range.

Day four: Home Valley to Mount Elizabeth Station (250km)

A longer day in the car, Mount Elizabeth is another working cattle station with some stunning attractions. If you have the time, take a day trip out to Wunnamurra Gorge with its spectacular waterfall, white sandy beaches and refreshing water hole. If time permits, check out the station’s own ’beach‘ at Warla Gorge. If you have extra time it might be worth planning to tackle the challenging 440km round trip that is the Munja Track.

Day five: Mount Elizabeth Station to Manning Gorge (45km)

Base yourself at the campgrounds at Manning Gorge located on the Manning River, which offers scenic walks, rock art and a refreshing swim. Galvans and Adcock Gorges are only a short drive away, both offering seasonal waterfalls and a rewarding swim.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Alex (@alex.vp.photography)

Day six: Manning Gorge to Bell Gorge (86km)

Another short day behind the wheel will bring you to yet another spectacular gorge. Stay the night at the Silent Grove campgrounds then drive to Bell Gorge. A short drive will bring you to the top of the waterfalls. As long as there isn’t too much water coming down the gorge you can experience a natural infinity pool.

Day seven: Bell Gorge to Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge (96km)

The spectacular Wunaamin Miliwundi Ranges greet visitors as they wind their way into the property. The lodge offers a range of accommodation as well as camping on the banks of the Barker River. Visit Barker Pool, Dolerite and Yellowman Gorges.

Day eight: Mount Hart Wilderness Lodge to Windjana Gorge National Park (130km)

Stay at the Windjana Gorge Campgrounds (bookings essential). This is an unpowered site.

Soak up the ancient ambience of Windjana Gorge as flocks of Major Mitchell’s cockatoos squawk a raucous melody.

An afternoon trip out to Tunnel Creek should be high on your agenda where you can make your way along the 750m long subterranean water way. Wear shoes you can get wet and take a torch because you will be walking through water and it gets dark.

  • Getting to Kununurra
  • When to visit

Embrace adventure in a world of vast lakes, ancient ranges, iconic road trips and huge outback stations.

Kununurra is the gateway town to the East Kimberley, and a great base if you’d like to explore some of Western Australia’s most remarkable natural attractions, including World Heritage-listed Purnululu National Park and its beehive-shaped Bungle Bungle Range. Adventure is synonymous with Kununurra, home to lakes, rivers, waterfalls and barramundi. It’s easy to see why the name means "Big Water" in the language of local Aboriginal people, who have roamed this landscape for thousands of years.

The Miriwoong Gajerrong people are the Traditional Owners of Kununurra/Goonoonoorrang. Hear Dreamtime stories, see traditional artworks and connect to the local Aboriginal culture on one of the cultural tours run by Waringarri Aboriginal Arts.

  • Traditional name: Goonoonoorrang (pronounced Goo-noo-noor-rang)

Much of the region’s accommodation and tours remain open year-round, but many consider the drier months between May and November to be the best time to visit. With that said, visitors willing to put up with a few days of rain during the wet season will be rewarded with thundering waterfalls and fewer crowds.

  • High season: Dry season (April to November)
  • Low season: Wet season (December to March)
