My sister and I are staying only one night at the Springhill Suites Bayfront over Memorial Day to celebrate her 80th birthday.
We thought about going to the zoo in the late afternoon Sunday and stay through some of the night activities.
1. Is this suitable for two seniors, or just geared towards famines a b d children?
2. Should we drive and pay for parking, or would taking public transportation from where we are staying be easier?
3. Is there any advantage to buying tickets on line in advance?
there any advantage to booking tickets on line for two seniors?

Sorry for my errors. I wasn't able to edit!
Thanks for your help.
I found the zoo a bit hilly but otherwise I think it would be a delightful way for you two to spend her birthday. You can rent scooters if walking is an issue. There was seating & shade available.
Do note that the Zoo is built around a canyon...that's the reason so many enclosures can be built into the space while still conveying a sense of a lot of room. That means a lot of slopes...you will not want to be walk up slopes. Fortunately, the Zoo has an introductory tram ride, a multiple stop Kangaroo bus, a Skyfari mini-funicular, a bridge across the canyon, and an elevator between the canyon floor and above. Study a map, and redshirted volunteers are a great resource.
I think there is still a slight discount buying on line...moreover, that would allow one to skip the ticket booths.
We were just at the zoo this morning. We figured getting there at 10 am amidst a May grey morning would be easy peasy parking, but our handicap zone was full and we had to park a bit further afield. But that was today. Memorial Day Sunday? You wont find us there.
Much of the zoo's nighttime activities are indeed geared towards families. As a 70+ senior myself, I wouldn't go just for those activities considering the high price of tickets. I'm a member; went with husband using a free pass for the holiday night program last winter and was in some steep paths and thick crowds. For no extra cost, it worked out. But if you really want to see some of the zoo as well, and consider the activities as a bonus, then it's worth it. We liked the musical performances, especially where you can sit to watch, and some of the lighting effects.
Not sure if you've planned a birthday meal, but you could start or finish at The Prado; they have reservations available that Sunday between 4:30 and 8:00. It's about a 1/3 mile very pretty walk between the restaurant and zoo entrance.
https://www.pradobalboa.com/
https://www.google.com/maps/dir/32.73144,-117.1495481/32.7346036,-117.1485814/@32.7330557,-117.1500042,570m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m2!4m1!3e2?entry=ttu
Per the zoo's FAQ's, there is a 10% discount at the ticket booth for seniors. That would be off full price, which I think is $79? There isn't a way to get that discount online as far as I can tell. But very few people are going to be arriving late afternoon and buying tickets at the windows.
"Yes! Seniors aged 65 and up receive a 10% discount off the 1-Day Pass Any Day ticket. Just show a valid photo ID card at any ticket window!"
As a side note, I do have a favorite abbreviated walking tour without steep climbs. I start past the tour booth, walk down Fern Canyon Trail, over to the Africa Rocks exhibit, through the exhibit to the Outback exit, around the Urban Jungle, then back across the Koalafornia Boardwalk to Front Street and the exit. That should actually hit some of the nighttime entertainment.

Thank you for all the helpful suggestions!
We will go before 4, and then stay awhile for some night activities. Sounds like an uber might be preferable to driving.
I know this may not fit your timing given that you said you wanted to visit the Zoo earlier in the day, but at 2 p.m. every Sunday, we have a free concert at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. It's the world's largest outdoor pipe organ and has been in use since January 1, 1915.
There is plenty of seating on metal benches, but the benches are exposed to full sun so wear hats and sunscreen if it's a sunny day.
If you find that it's not your cup of tea, it's very easy to just get up and leave (preferably between songs) and it wouldn't have cost you anything but your time. It's a short 5-minute walk to The Prado restaurant mentioned above.
For Memorial Day weekend, the Sunday concert listing is shown as:
May 26: Sunday to Celebrate - Memorial Day
Selections from Mozart’s Requiem with the Bishop’s Singers directed by Christine Micu
You can learn more here:

we took a ride share there. It was fun because we could both look around the park on the way in. It's more than just the Zoo.
Hi we are old but planning to go in September this year. - When you say you took a rideshare there, does that just mean you shared a taxi with someone else to get you there. But then you mention about looking around the park on the way in. Can you give anymore information on how to go there for the full day and make the most of it. - thanks
How much of Balboa Park you can see while en route to the zoo depends on what route you take. If the driver goes up Park Blvd, you can get a glimpse of the fountain in the main plaza and maybe the rose garden and cactus garden on the opposite side of the street. The more scenic route would be to come up Laurel St and go over the Cabrillo Bridge and through the heart of the park before reaching Park Blvd and turning left to get to the zoo. I don't think any rideshare driver is going to take you on the scenic route. Their maps will always go the more direct way up Park Blvd.
If you want to spend time in other areas of Balboa Park while you're at the zoo, just walk out the zoo exit (get a handstamp so you can return later) and turn right. Follow the path straight towards the Prado. On the way, you'll pass Spanish Village with its artists and their shops and the Moreton Bay Fig tree. When you get to the Prado, you'll see it's a walkway lined with museums. The main fountain is towards your left and the Plaza de Panama is towards your right. You can stop and visit any museums that interest you. The Botanical Building, which will be on your right, is free. It's currently being renovated, but is targeted to reopen about the time you'll be here. The Timken Museum is also free. There's a sculpture garden and cafe at the Plaza de Panama if you want something to eat, or you can turn left from the plaza and head towards the Japanese Friendship Garden and the cafe there.
@random571 - we normally suggest posters start their own thread rather than latch onto someone else's if the situation is different to get more tailored advice. But since you already have eight threads started for your visit, perhaps you could include your zoo transport and day questions on your existing zoo thread:

‘She made certain that her city had the very best’: Hundreds mourn Joan Jacobs in a park bearing her name
Dozens of relatives, friends and leaders shared story after story of the philanthropist’s generosity and endurance.

Decades ago, Irwin Jacobs turned down a teaching job at a new university in San Diego.
Jacobs was on the faculty at MIT and felt his future was on the East Coast. Yet the decision didn’t feel quite right. One day after work he returned, in a rainstorm, to the home his family rented.
His wife, Joan Jacobs, met him at the door and read the description of a house she wanted them to buy.
“Let’s go see it tomorrow,” Irwin Jacobs said.
“There’s only one problem,” his wife responded. “It’s in La Jolla.”
The exchange helped reshape San Diego history.
Joan Jacobs died May 6 after 91 years of life and 70 years of marriage, and her husband shared that memory Monday before hundreds of people who gathered for her public memorial. The service took place near the water at The Rady Shell, which is in a park named after the family and within miles of other institutions bearing the Jacobs name.
Irwin Jacobs did end up at UC San Diego before founding the technology giant Qualcomm, and the couple gave hundreds of millions of dollars to local arts, educational and scientific organizations. For two-plus hours, more than two dozen relatives, friends and leaders shared story after story of Jacobs’ generosity, endurance and attention to detail. Even the color of the Rady Shell seats, a bright “tropical red,” had been picked out by her.
“She made certain that her city had the very best,” said Kathryn Kanjo, CEO of the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego.
The San Diego Symphony’s brass musicians performed and a band from the La Jolla Playhouse belted out “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” from the musical “Jersey Boys,” two groups that wouldn’t be what they are without the Jacobs.
The family moved to La Jolla in the mid-1960s. The neighborhood had a history of discrimination against several ethnic groups, including Jews, and the couple’s first major philanthropic gift was for a local Jewish Community Center with the Beth-El congregation.
The Jacobs’ influence grew along with the size of their family. A slideshow included one image of Joan and Irwin Jacobs standing next to both Barack Obama and Bill Clinton followed by another of them on a couch overrun with children.
The Jacobs had four sons and more than a dozen grandchildren who packed Monday’s stage, and two great-grandchildren were born at UC San Diego Health’s Jacobs Medical Center.
Joan Jacobs helped fill that building with art, including Jeff Koons’ massive “Party Hat (Orange).” During the height of the pandemic, when only hospital staffers were allowed to enter, the couple nonetheless snuck inside to watch the sculpture’s installation.
Security reported them to Patty Maysent, CEO of UC San Diego Health. “What am I supposed to do, kick them out?” Maysent told the crowd, before adding, “I kept that secret until just now.”
The family often traveled, but Joan Jacobs was not looking for straight vacations. She told a friend: “Don’t waste time at the pool or the beach.”
During one trip to Germany, when she wanted to see sculptures far from accessible roads, she rode a bike before falling and breaking her leg. On a tour in Spain, confined to a wheelchair from a different ailment, she still locked in on the art around her.
“Look at that incredible blue,” one son recalled her saying in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. “You can tell it’s Yves Klein.”
Relatives said their lives had been shaped by Jacobs.
U.S. Rep. Sara Jacobs, who introduced herself as the “shortest of the grandchildren,” said “Grandma Joan taught me that it was possible to be girly and feminine and love shopping and also be strong and opinionated and care about the world.”
Joan Jacobs unsurprisingly paid attention to how others treated their families.
She once told friends to invest in a stock. When someone asked what was so special about that company, Joan Jacobs said, “The CEO is very good to his mother.”
In late 2019, Jacobs was diagnosed with cardiac amyloidosis, a condition that weakens the heart. She was given only months to live. But while Jacobs had to spend more time lying down she continued on for years.
“At first I thought it was just her incredible will to live,” said her son Hal Jacobs. “But after watching and listening to her, I realized” that “she didn’t want to leave dad on his own.”
Recently she fell and hit her head. Doctors from Scripps and UCSD stepped in, and Jacobs looked stable enough in early May that her family thought she might return home.
Then Irwin Jacobs got calls last Monday after leaving the hospital: Joan Jacobs now needed a mask to breathe. He should come back.
When Martha Gilmer, CEO of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, learned that Jacobs had died, she quickly told an audience at the Civic Theater.
The room gasped, she said.
“Everyone there grasped the enormity of the news.”
