A boat ride and short hike take you and fellow tour companies to the base of the glacier, with a fairly easy uphill ice trek in crampons. Simple enough for my 9-year-old (who had a blast on the ice). Hielo Y Aventura is the local tour operator, for Big Ice and Minitrecking so you are better off working with them directly to book glacier tours. I initially booked through Howlanders and then got a cancellation and was able to rebook with H&A for the same date. Some of this complexity is due to the ever changing exchange rates. Just know that if you use a provider who is not H&A they are just an agency and may not be able to provide direct feedback to help with your booking. Here you can go on some walking trails to get different views of the glacier. You then get on a to get boat closer to the glacier for whatever your time slot for the trek. You have a safety briefing and then have about 2 hours on the glacier in a small group exploring different parts of it. There is a guide who is very knowledgable of the glacier and advises you of any safety things to consider. You have plenty of time to take pictures. However, upon arrival in El Calafate, we learned that there is only one company that books these tours and they do it for $100 less than these third parties. Book through Hielo Y Aventura in El Calafate, it is the company that these third parties have to use anyway, but they don't overcharge you. You can book online or in person. • epn90 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Perito Moreno glacier The trip was amazing, the glacier is spectacular, our guides were friendly and informative, and it’s an experience we’re not likely to forget. However, the planning/organization/information provided could be improved upon. Read on for the information I wish I knew before going. Gloves are mandatory on the glacier because the ice is sharp, and if you fall, you may cut yourself. If you don’t have any, they will lend you some, but I would have rather worn my own. The pickup time in El Calafate is quoted as between 7am and 3pm, which is a vast window and makes planning your day/trip difficult. They texted me via WhatsApp around 6:30pm the day prior to say that they would meet us at the hotel at 7:30am, and depending on the route there could be a delay of up to 30 minutes. We were picked up at 8:10 and there were 2-3 more pickups after us. Honestly I don’t know how it would be possible to do the tour that we did and leave at 3pm - or even any time after about noon. We got back to El Calafate around 5:30pm. There are other tour companies operating similar tours so I’m guessing that they need to coordinate with each other because not everyone can be on the glacier at the same time, and the weather is probably also a factor, but the uncertainty added some complexity to the planning. We visited in January, so the days are long, and I’m not sure if they give the same window at other times of the year. From town, it’s about an hour to the park, and the first thing you do is stop at a viewpoint where you can take in the whole glacier. Then you get back on the bus, transfer to a boat, which cruises around for about 15 minutes, and takes you over to the side of the lake from which you access the glacier. There is a little hut with restrooms and cubbies to store items you don’t want to bring with you on the glacier - though I wouldn’t store valuables there. From there, the hike to the glacier is slightly over 1km, hike on the glacier for about 2km, then return to the meeting point with the boat. We got off the boat around noon, and back on the boat at 3:45, and another group was getting off to begin their trek at that time. Then the boat takes you straight back to the bus and you return to town. The description section of this excursion says that you have to bring Argentinian pesos for park entry (5.500 per non-Argentino adult, 1.500 per adult Argentino) but we were able to use a credit card. On January 18 for 2 adult foreigners, this worked out to about $33 USD. The ticket is also good for a 50% discount for the next 2 days of entry to the same park, so if you are doing another excursion the day before or the day after, save your paper ticket. It also says that there is no opportunity to buy food during the trip and you have to bring it with you, which is not true. The first stop, the glacier observation area, has a cafe where you are able to buy sandwiches, snacks, and other items and we stopped there for about one hour. After the boat ride there is an opportunity to eat lunch before bringing the hike. I don’t know if they switch the order of activities based on different pickup times. I would absolutely recommend this excursion to anyone and was certainly a highlight of our whole Argentine trip, but I would have appreciated having more complete information about the day before we got on the bus in the morning. If you are coming to El Calafate, it is virtually guaranteed that you will go to look at the glacier. Make it a lifetime highlight and go trekking on it too. Read more Written February 16, 2023

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the only glaciers in the world that’s still advancing. Though it’s not the only glacier in the area, it’s the one that made the city of El Calafate famous worldwide. For many years now, El Calafate has been considered the capital of the glaciers. Located at the shore of Lago Argentino (the southernmost, largest Patagonian lake) it’s also home to the Spegazzini glacier, which forms the natural border between Argentina and Chile, and the Upsala Glacier, named Glaciar del Gigante (Giant’s glacier) it’s the biggest glacier that sits at the mouth of Lake Argentino.

• Glaciers are the main attractions that you can visit via hiking or a boat ride, but you have a lot more to discover about Argentine rural culture. On your free day, you can visit a typical Patagonian finca (ranch) and learn all about  Argentine rural culture, the traditions of the gaucho (cowboy) and enjoy a great asado (barbecue).
• If you are really into knowing more about Perito Moreno Glacier and other famous icy giants of the region, you can visit The Glaciarium Museum and learn about the history of glaciers and their first explorers. Getting to the museum is really easy— There is a transfer you can take to the Tourist Office in downtown Calafate.

Perito Moreno Glacier Tour - El Calafate

• Perito Moreno Glacier tour: Meet the icy giant of Patagonia

During the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel and drive you to Glaciers National Park to enjoy the 6-hour Perito Moreno Glacier tour.   You will travel about 25 miles from El Calafate to the park, enjoying the views of the Patagonian steppe. Once inside the park, you will take walkways to explore the different viewpoints, and you’ll feel unbelievably close to Perito Moreno Glacier. If you’re lucky, you may even get to see a piece of ice break off and fall from the glacier wall, sinking forever into the lake below.

Over the course of about one hour, a bilingual guide will provide you with all the information you might want to know…and things you may have never thought about. After this visit, you will take a boat ride that will bring you close enough to fully appreciate the 262-foot ice walls of Perito Moreno! You’ll never feel closer to this gigantic and impressive natural masterpiece. At the end of the day, we will drive you back to your hotel.

El Calafate, Day at Leisure

• Day at leisure in El Calafate – Optional tour: 4×4 and mountain biking

El Calafate adventures come in many different shapes and sizes. For your free day, we have an adventure suggestion that will get your wheels in motion to keep on exploring. Just ten minutes outside of town, you’ll find a 3000-foot-high hill, where you’ll have stunning views of Lake Argentino, Mount Fitz Roy and Torre. 

Take a day tour to ride in a 4×4 right to the top of this hill, where you will spot the Perito Moreno Glacier emerging little by little from La Cordillera de los Andes (The Andes Range). This is also a place to find archeological treasures (like millenary shark teeth or petrified oysters) from different geological periods of Earth. 

For the second part of the trip, you’ll hop on a mountain bike to get back to El Calafate. On the way you’ll stop to grab a bite, take pictures, spot wild guanacos and challenge your riding abilities with various types of terrain as you cross marshes and rocky pathways until you reach civilization again. Nature, history and adventure, all in one trip!

Torres del Paine Hike - Chile

• Torres del Paine National: Hike inside the National Park (Chile)

In the early morning, we’ll pick you up from your hotel to start your 15-hour trip to Chile and your full-day visit to Torres del Paine National Park. It’s going to be a long day of hiking, but it’s worth every minute every minute 

First, we’ll drive through the Patagonian steppe for 2hr 30min (you might be able to see rheas, guanacos, Patagonian hare, and even condors!) until reaching the border of Chile in Cancha Carrera, where we’ll go through customs. 

We’ll keep traveling through isolated and windy landscapes, occasionally dotted by guanacos and native green-orange-tinted bushes; you’ll truly feel the momentous solitude that characterizes Patagonia. Torres del Paine is a gift that keeps on giving; little by little it will reveal its fascinating nature, and prepare to hike this amazing park!

Along a winding road, we’ll make different stops to have a close-up view of various attractions like Cascada Paine (Paine Waterfall), Paine Range at Lake Sarmiento, and the Paine Horns at Lake Nordenskjold. Depending on the weather, we’ll depart on a 1-hour hike to reach the lake and get closer to the striking mountain peaks. At midday, after having stopped by the Lago Pehoé Viewpoint to gaze at the vastness of the French Valley, we’ll have our boxed lunch with this mountainous backdrop. 

At the end of this dreamy travel experience, we’ll drive you back to El Calafate to enjoy your last evening in town.

• What to wear and what to bring for this tour?

Dressing like an onion is probably the key – since weather is so variable – always be ready for some rain, wind, and sun (an extra pair of socks can be crucial!).  Bring some extra snacks and  Ziploc bags (for taking your trash back) , enough water, and sunblock too! Have it handy to use.

All very good I used you with my 14 year old in 2017. It is more money but there were a number of times we were impressed how on top of things your team and organization were. We forgot we locked up our money and passports in a hotel safe. Calmy people were contacted and a remedy was found. There was a definite feeling that you all were there, ready to help or to juist make sure things were going well. Really glad we asked to go to the coast; Valparaiso, Isla Negra and Nerudas house. Really no need to see Viña del Mar, too much hotel and vacationer feeling there, would have preferred something additional in Valparaiso. Peulla hotel Natura was wonderful, could have spent another night there, and done more than a small walk in that area. Glad we took the bus over the Andes and the lake crossing. Thanks much. All four of us loved it.

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 13 days

I am usually the sort of person to arrange my travel independently, but for my trip to Patagonia I made an exception. This proved to be a very wise idea indeed; without Say Hueque's expertise, reasonable pricing and astute care, I was able to make the most of my limited time in Patagonia. Their itinerary turned out to be based on a large amount of experience. I had just enough time in each place. The bus journeys were well planned in particular (I appreciated sitting for a day or so to get to Puerto Natales after several days hiking in El Chalten!), and I enjoyed all their suggested activities and places to eat. Most importantly, I never felt like I was wasting time anywhere! It was clear to me the operators that Say Hueque are the best in the area. All the guides were unmatched in their ability and knowledge, and the transfers were efficient and prompt. None of these companies or places to stay let me down in the least. I enjoyed all of the places they arranged for me to stay, especially in Punta Arenas and Calafate. Even when I had to go to a different hostel one night, Say Heuque's reputation and the good contact between me and my agent helped me overcome what would have otherwise been a difficult situation. The excursions were all enjoyable. I thought they balanced each other out quite well, adding just the right amount of action and comfort without being stuck in a touristy group. Summing up, my trip to Patagonia would not have been nearly as smooth or enjoyable without Say Hueque. I was extremely happy I chose to use them, and would definitely go to them for my next adventure in South America.

Argentina & Chile: Amazing Patagonia - 9 days

I did this trip couple of days ago and I really enjoyed it. Everything was very well organised, great itinerary and great selection of Hotels in El Calafate, El Chalten and Puerto Natales. Once we landed in El Calafate we found the bus company booked by our guides and got on the bus for El Chalten. There we did two amazing hiking trails Laguna de los Tres and Laguna Torre. Both of them were well maintained with magnificent views. From El Chalten a bus picked us up from our hotel and drove us back to El Calafate. There we visited the glacier national park to see Perito Moreno Glacier from the view points and from a boat (cruise) that took us very close for a better look. The guide we had was great, very knowledgeable and friendly (English, German and Spanish speaker). Then the following day, they picked us up early for our day in Torres del Paine national Park in Chile. The weather wasn't very good but it didn't rain and the view of the Torres was pretty limited (cloudy, misty) but still very impressive. From there the rest of the group went back to Argentina while we got picked up by a mini bus that took us to Puerto Natales where we spent two chilled days wandering around the town. The next day we took a taxi to the bus station where we caught the 8 o'clock bus back to El Calafate. Finally we spent one more day there and the following morning a mini bus picked us up and took us to the airport on time for our flight. To sum up, everything worked out very well and there were no problems in the hotels and the different means of transport. There was also good communication via email with the people from Say Hueque. They were very keen to see if everything was going ok for us. I would definitely recommend Say Hueque.

Our trip to Patagonia is something that I will never forget. I was willing to travel to Patagonia a long time ago and everything went as it was planned. Hotel Las Dunas and Hotel Chalten Suites were very nice hotels to stay and a special note to Pablo, the guide who joined us at El Chalten during the treks to Laguna de los tres and Torre Mount. We will definetely come back to Patagonia soon.

What people love about patagonia tours from el calafate.

Most of the tour was well planned and executed. We enjoyed seeing the Perito Moreno Glacier, viewing Mt. Fitz Roy and walking among the Penguins in Beagle Channel. Transfers were well planned. The trips in Ushaia that didn't have transfers were within easy walking distance of our hotel. The one snag was the hike to Torres del Paine. The day before that hike started early and ended with a long bus ride from Torres del Paine National Park back to Puerto Natales which was made longer since we had to deliver one participant to an out of the way hotel. The day of the hike started early once again and required a long bus ride back to Torres del Paine National Park. We decided we were not ready to spend that much time on another bus and decided to forgo the hike. Our request for a refund for the hike was denied though we thought this was the one situation where poor planning interfered with our enjoyment of the activities.

Safari Azul

Safari Azul  is designed for those who, in addition to sailing in front of the  Perito Moreno Glacier , dream of getting closer to the glacial ice! The tour begins in El Calafate when the bus goes to  Los Glaciares National Park . Once in  Puerto Bajo de las Sombras , just 7 km from the  footbridges , we will take a boat to cross  Rico Lake  and after sailing 20 minutes, we will disembark on the opposite coast.

We will walk for 30 minutes with a  view of the southern wall of the Glacier  in case we are surprised by some thunderous landslide. Once next to the ice it will be time for an unforgettable experience… We will be able to fully enjoy its intense and varied blues, whites and its whimsical shapes.

We will have time to take many photos and then we will return to the embarkation point always accompanied by an experienced guide. The total walk is approximately 1.30 hours through a natural terrain of sand and stones with some slopes and stairs. The route, one and a half kilometers long,  will be along the shore of the lake and through a lush forest with a view of the Glacier. Finally we will take the boat to appreciate the water and, a few meters away, the entire southern face of the glacier and be able to see every detail of the marbled ice wall.

Once in the port, we will take the bus to the  footbridges, where we will have 2 hours  to enjoy the incredible panoramic view. In addition, they will be able to take advantage of this time to consume the food that they must bring from El Calafate. We will arrive in El Calafate after touring the Patagonian steppe, with our soul charged with the natural energy of this unique glacier.

Blue Safari without transfer: Passengers must arrive at Puerto Bajo Las Sombras at the indicated time. We recommend going early to the walkway area and then heading to the port to begin navigation. The transfer can only be added more than 7 days in advance of the chosen date.

Blue Safari with transfer: The passenger will be picked up at the hotel where they are staying and at the end of the tour they will return to the same place. If you are not staying in a hotel or hostel, a meeting point will be assigned to begin the tour.

• Tour not suitable for pregnant women, people with knee or back problems, obesity [BMI greater than 30], people with heart problems, stents, bypasses, pacemakers, anticoagulants, or people with recent operations or disabilities.
