10. Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

India's largest airport is also its best, according to our readers. A favorite for its efficiency, this is the only airport in the country with four major runways—which in part explains how so many passengers are able to pass through the premises without a hitch. That there are crowds at times should come as no surprise, but what really matters is that said throngs (over 37 million passengers came through in 2021, for example) get where they need to go.

9. Helsinki Airport (HEL)

Originally built for the 1952 Summer Olympics, the airport has expanded significantly over the decades, but still retains a trademark Nordic edge; in fact, the terminals are filled with nods to the city’s design heritage, including stores like the textile giant Marimekko and the Finnish luxury brand Balmuir. If you’re traveling with kids, stop at Moomin Cafe, which is decorated with characters from Finnish illustrator Tove Jansson’s beloved comic strip and serves a comforting menu of pancakes and blueberry milkshakes. And even the chairs scattered throughout the terminals have a lovely connection to local culture: They’re designed by such Finnish luminaries as Alvar Aalto, Eero Aarnio, Yrjö Kukkapuro, and Ilmari Tapiovaara.

8. Dubai International Airport (DXB)

Dubai International Airport is so staggeringly enormous that its Terminal 3 alone covers 18.4 million square feet, ranking it the second-largest building in the world by floor space. Unsurprisingly for a city that loves luxury, the airport also houses one of the world’s biggest duty-free shopping centers, and over the years it’s hosted such attention-grabbing amenities as a resident DJ program . As the base for flag carrier Emirates , a Readers’ Choice favorite , it is also served by scores of international airlines, and it’s long been a popular stopover destination for North American travelers heading to East Asia or the South Pacific. Amenities like zen gardens and nap pods help pass the time on a layover of any length.

7. Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)

For years, Tokyo ’s Haneda was primarily a domestic airport, but it's gaining long-distance flights—and a strong international following. What accounts for its popularity? Simply put, it’s not Narita , the country's bustling international hub that's a 45-mile drive from the capital, notorious for, among other things, the $200 cab fare it takes to get there. Haneda, by contrast, is just ten miles from the city center, but it's not just proximity that wins over fliers: Haneda gets high marks for the comfort and cleanliness of its terminals, a wide array of shopping and dining options, and fast and efficient transportation links to downtown Tokyo.

6. Hong Kong International Airport (HKG)

Hong Kong’s international airport offers fast connections to the city from its island aerie, via an Airport Express that whisks travelers from terminal to city center in 24 minutes. It’s also one of the region’s top connecting hubs, with service to dozens of destinations in mainland China alone. Passengers on a layover appreciate the wide array of premium class lounges , amenities like nap rooms, and the Regal Airport Hotel, which Skytrax consistently ranks as one of the world’s best airport hotels . Beyond mere convenience, the Regal includes seven bars, restaurants, and patisseries and the Thai-inspired OM Spa, which offers treatments like an aromatherapy massage with blue chamomile, ylang ylang, and rosemary.

Zurich Airport

5. Zurich Airport (ZRH)

As Switzerland’s largest international airport, Zurich is also the main hub for Swiss , which operates business-class and first-class lounges—and those clubs are no joke, thanks to Champagne and whiskey bars. Looking for a place to buy some duty-free chocolate? There are dozens of shops here to browse. Readers also like the variety of restaurants and bars, and if the weather cooperates, there’s an outdoor observation deck with sweeping views of the action on the runways.

4. Hamad International Airport (DOH)

Doha ’s airport is a major connecting hub for Qatar’s eponymous home airline (also a Readers’ Choice pick), and in many ways it feels more like a resort hotel than a bustling transportation hub, with amenities that include a fitness center, squash courts, and an indoor swimming pool. It’s gotten high marks for its premium amenities, with a wide choice of lounges, plus quiet rooms and child’s entertainment zones for passengers in any airline class. For those on longer layovers, there’s an upscale hotel right inside the terminal, with half- or full-day rates available, and if your shoulders are feeling a little tense after that long-haul flight, you can stretch your muscles at the hotel’s golf simulator.

3. Seoul Incheon International Airport (ICN)

Seoul ’s main international airport opened 21 years ago on reclaimed land in the port city of Incheon and has been expanding ever since: A second passenger terminal debuted in 2018, part of the airport’s aim to double its capacity to 100 million passengers annually. Primarily serving the country’s two main airlines, Korean and Asiana, Incheon International also earns points for its spacious VIP lounges and amenities, including an indoor skating rink, a spa, and a “Cultural Street” with local cuisine and dance performances. While it’s 30 miles from the capital, a high-speed rail link makes the trip from terminal to city center in 43 minutes.

2. Istanbul Airport (IST)

For centuries, Istanbul has sat at the crossroads of international trade and travel, so it’s only natural that the Turkish city has finally stepped into its position as a global transport hub in the age of air travel as well. Opened in 2018 amid great fanfare—and bold ambitions to become the world’s biggest airport —the new IST gets praise for its modern design by Grimshaw Architects, which has netted awards for its emphasis on efficiency and sustainability. With high-tech touches like a fleet of robots to direct passengers through the 818-million-square-foot hub and runway capacity to move a total of 90 flights per hour, the airport is poised to take off as a major global player.

1. Singapore Changi Airport (SIN)

Changi takes the top spot this year, and it's fittingly home to your favorite carrier, Singapore Airlines . In addition to being an ideal gateway to dozens of locations in the region, Changi has emerged as a destination in its own right : In 2019, the airport debuted the Moshe Safdie-designed Jewel, which includes indoor forests and waterfalls and the 14,000-square-foot Canopy Park, all under a massive glass dome. Elsewhere, you’ll find open-air decks, the world’s first airport butterfly garden, a free 24-hour movie theater, and even a rooftop pool and hot tub overlooking the runways.

New York-based travel magazine Travel + Leisure recently published the results from its World’s Best Awards, where its readers ranked the world’s top places and facilities, from cities and islands to hotels, spas and car rental companies.

Taking place between January and May, the World Best Awards’ survey also included the Top International Airports category, which readers voted for despite not being able to travel as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

According to the magazine , readers were asked to weigh in on airports’ access, check-in and security as well as restaurants and bars and design. Travel + Leisure is not the only competition for the world’s best airports. Airport Council International celebrated on the same day the winners of this year’s Airport Service Quality Awards while every year London-based management consultancy firm Skytrax announced the world airline awards.

Here are the winners.

1. Singapore Changi

With a score of 93.45, Singapore Changi was once again crowned as the world’s best airport. According to the magazine, readers valued the airport’s smooth operations as well as the many things that passengers can enjoy – including a vast selection of restaurants, a cinema and an open-air pool.

“It is unquestionably the best airport in the world, with lots of shopping, dining, and fabulous areas for children,” said one respondent. “It is as good as everyone says it is,” added another. Despite the hard blow it sustained because of the pandemic, in 2020 Changi was crowned the world’s best airport for the eighth consecutive time during the Skytrax awards.

“For Singapore Changi Airport to be voted the World’s Best Airport title for eight consecutive years is a truly remarkable achievement and demonstrates a simply fantastic level of consistency,” commented Skytrax CEO Edward Plaisted at the time.

2. Istanbul Airport

Following closely with 91.7 points, Istanbul Airport took second place. Opened in October 2018, the airport was on the pathway to economic prosperity when the Covid-19 pandemic hit, forcing the hub to set aside long-term projects.

Instead of drowning, the airport managed to weather the Covid-19 storm, becoming the first airport in the world to receive Airport Council International’s Health Accreditation Scheme, renewing it for the second time in July 2021.

As iGA, we have come a long way in terms of health measures by putting extra effort until we saw this optimistic view,” commented iGA Airport CEO Kadri Samsunlu. “Seeing that the steps taken in terms of health measures in Istanbul Airport were later implemented in different industries is the biggest proof of how we excelled at our work.”

3. Incheon International Airport

Totalling a score of 89.15, Seoul’s Incheon International Airport won the bronze place at the awards.

Created in 2001 to connect the South Korean capital with the rest of the region, the airport was built between two islands on an artificial piece of land. Arriving fourth at the 2020 Skytrax airline awards, the airport managed to survive the pandemic, recently recovering a traffic volume of 10,000 travellers per day.

Like Istanbul Airport, the hub received the ACI health accreditation for the second consecutive year.

4. Dubai Airport

Dubai International Airport has for a long time been considered one of the best airports in the whole region, not only by Travel + Leisure readers but also from passengers around the world.

Even though in 2020 Covid-19 operations at Dubai Airport slowed down, resulting in the closure of terminal 1, traffic in the first half of 2021 reached 10.6 million passengers with authorities expecting a strong second half.

“In anticipation of the robust recovery of global air travel, we started the second half on a high note by re-opening Terminal 1 and Concourse D – the home terminal for our 60 international carriers, after 15 months of hibernation to accommodate the seasonal rush of travellers over the summer holidays,” commented Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths.

5. Doha Hamad

This is not the first time that Doha Hamad International Airport has won an aviation prize. At the 2020 Skytrax awards, the hub bagged two prizes, Best Airport Staff and Best Airport in the Middle East.

“Our award for Best Staff in the Middle East and Best Airport in the Middle East will reinforce our resolve to continue our operations in these difficult times with our utmost care to implement all measures to ensure the health and safety of our passengers and employees first,” commented the airport’s COO Eng. Badr Mohammed Al Meer.

After Doha came Tokyo Haneda followed by Hong Kong Airport, Narita, Zurich and Osaka which, with 82.07 points, was crowned the tenth best international airport.

The Best Airport Lounges in the World — and How to Get In

From Paris to Sydney, these amazing airport lounges offer gourmet restaurants, relaxing spas, and more.

travel leisure best airports

Forget fluorescent lighting, stale buffet food, and spotty Wi-Fi. These days, the best airport lounges feature amenities like yoga studios, detox bars, spa treatments, and dining rooms with menus by celebrity chefs . Of course, you generally have to pay for the privilege of luxuriating in these wonderful way stations by flying business or first class . But some premium credit cards will also grant you access. Here are 13 of the world's best airport lounges, and how you can get into them.

Some of these lounges might be closed at the moment, but all are expected to reopen. Before any intended visit, be sure to check with your airline about what facilities and amenities are available, and what cleaning and health protocols are in place.

Air France La Première Lounge, Paris

Air France's La Première first-class cabin is one of the most fashionable flying experiences in the world, and the airline's ground game is très chic , too. The airline reopened its flagship first-class lounge at Charles de Gaulle in May after an extensive refurbishment that included freshening up the cozy cocktail bar to be brighter and more inviting, adding semi-private relaxation areas and installing new pieces of art. Fliers can still expect cuisine created by star chef Alain Ducasse in the dining room. Hopefully, the Biologique Recherche spa treatments will resume soon, too.

Access: If you're one of the lucky few departing or connecting in Paris in Air France's La Première cabin, you're golden. You can also purchase access if you're departing on a long-haul Air France or Delta flight that's not equipped with La Première cabins for 500 euros ($600), or 75,000 of the airline's Flying Blue frequent flier miles, per person.

American Airlines Flagship First Dining

Although they are currently closed due to COVID-19, American Airlines fields its most exclusive lounges, Flagship First Dining venues, at its hubs in Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, and New York JFK. Once inside, guests are seated at their own individual tables and can order from gourmet menus that might include seasonal dishes such as roasted beet and burrata salad, or free-range beef tenderloin with peppercorn crust and prosciutto-wrapped asparagus. The airline also typically serves Krug Champagne along with other premium vintages from France and the U.S., as well as handcrafted cocktails.

Access: Getting into a Flagship First Dining lounge requires passengers to be traveling in the airline's first-class cabin on international routes, or one of its transcontinental flights in a three-cabin plane (meaning, economy, business, and first class). The Miami location is set to reopen in September, with the others to follow.

American Express Centurion Lounges

American Express has been steadily expanding its network of chic Centurion Lounges , even opening new locations throughout the pandemic in airports like New York JFK and Charlotte. It will soon count 40 locations, including both Centurion Lounges and freshly rebranded Escape Lounges — The Centurion Studio Partner (read: smaller outposts with fewer amenities) around the world. Although the services and facilities vary from lounge to lounge, guests can expect consistent touches across the network, including place-specific décor and installations by local artists, fine-dining menus created by up-and-coming regional chefs, and both signature cocktails as well as more unique options like Napa wines in San Francisco and Colorado microbrews in Denver. Some lounges even house spas, while the JFK one has a speakeasy bar .

Access: If you have a Platinum, Business Platinum, or Centurion (a.k.a. Black) card and present a same-day boarding pass, you can spend some time in these lounges. Those with a Delta SkyMiles Reserve business or personal card can also come in when flying Delta.

Cathay Pacific The Pier First Class Lounge, Hong Kong

Designed by Ilse Crawford (whose other projects include Ett Hem in Stockholm and Refettorio Felix in London), this stunning salon is all about different spaces for different vibes. There are elegant sitting areas framed by floor-to-ceiling windows with tarmac views for the aviation geeks, and a distinctive, horseshoe-shaped cocktail bar with a pale green onyx top for the see-and-be-seen scenesters. The mid-century-inspired restaurant serves classy continental fare (but also the airline's signature spicy dan dan noodles). For those in search of quietude, however, there are eight day rooms plus shower suites in The Retreat portion, as well as a small spa offering complimentary mini treatments like facials and foot massages.

Access: Another one closed until further notice, we expect this lounge to reopen eventually given its popularity. To get in, you'll need to be departing in first class on Cathay Pacific or another Oneworld airline, or have Oneworld top-tier Emerald status.

Delta Sky Club, Atlanta

Delta fields no fewer than nine Sky Clubs at its home airport of Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson . Visit the one in Concourse F because that's the location with the outdoor Sky Deck, where guests can enjoy snacks and drinks with views of the runways. Barring that, try to swing by the flagship in Concourse B. It has the most space to spread out, and fun features like a "wine wall" of bottles curated by Andrea Robinson, the airline's master sommelier, as well as a rotating selection of Southern tapas from acclaimed Atlanta-based chef Linton Hopkins. A gallery of works by local artists and brightly lit shower suites are added bonuses.

Access: Want to access either location? You'll need a Delta Sky Club membership or to be flying business class on international or transcontinental routes with Delta or its SkyTeam partners. Some SkyTeam elites can also get in, as can folks with the Amex Platinum or Delta SkyMiles Reserve cards who are flying with the airline the same day.

Emirates First Class Lounge, Dubai

The Emirates First Class Lounge at Dubai International Airport is essentially its own terminal, spanning nearly the entire length of the airport's international concourse. Once inside, guests can indulge with a tasting in the lounge's wine cellar or a treatment in the Timeless Spa. Then, perk up with an espresso at the coffee bar or sit back with a stogie in the cigar lounge. There's also a whole arcade of in-lounge duty-free shops. The dining room fields an extensive buffet, with everything from sushi to pastries, as well as à la carte options, though feel free to order food and drinks from any of the expansive seating areas you happen to settle in. There are also shower suites and semi-private quiet rooms for napping, if you just want to unwind.

Access: If you want to spend some time here, you'll need to have Emirates Skywards Platinum elite status or be departing in first class on an Emirates flight.

Lufthansa First Class Terminal, Frankfurt

Lufthansa has created not just a first-class lounge, but an entire First Class Terminal, at its hub in Frankfurt. Instead of heading to the main airport, fliers can pull right up to the First Class Terminal and go through security screening on-site before enjoying the lounge's many attractions. They'll then pass through a dedicated customs and immigration checkpoint before being chauffeured to their flight. The lounge's highlights include a cigar lounge, a bar serving over 130 different kinds of whiskey, a full-service dining room, and shower rooms including one with a full bath (ask for one of the airline's signature rubber duckies before you lather up).

Access: The First Class Terminal will reopen on Sept. 1 . When it does, you'll need to be departing in first class on Lufthansa, or arriving on Lufthansa in first class and connecting to a flight operated by Lufthansa, Austrian, or Swiss. Uber-elite Hon Circle fliers can also get in.

Qantas First Lounge, Sydney

When you make your way past the massive living wall of plants and step onto the escalator that whisks you from the crowded concourse up to the lounge level at Qantas' Sydney hub, it's like taking a journey back to the golden age of flying, complete with a vintage-style destination board featuring clattering letter and number tiles. Guests can while away the hours nibbling on seasonal fare created by Aussie celebrity chef Neil Perry, or step into the day spa for a complimentary massage or facial performed with fancy LaGaia products. There are also a number of marble-clad shower suites for freshening up and private conference rooms for impromptu meetings.

Access: Closed for now, this lounge should reopen when international flights resume . First-class fliers on Qantas, Emirates, or Oneworld partner flights can get in, as can certain Qantas, Emirates, and Oneworld elites departing on Qantas, Emirates, or Oneworld partner airline flights.

Qatar Airways Al Mourjan Business Lounge, Doha

You might think Qatar Airways' industry-leading business-class Qsuites are the main reason to fly the airline, but a sojourn in its spacious, sophisticated lounge in Doha isn't a bad rationale either. Measuring up at over 100,000 square feet, there's something for everyone, including dedicated family spaces, both quiet and more communal sitting areas, small semi-private napping rooms, not one but two dining rooms, and a warren of individual shower suites, plus a game room with pinball machines, foosball, PlayStation, and even an F1 race car simulator. Saunter down the sculptural spiral staircase to the reflecting pool to feel like a true jetsetter.

Access: To get in, you need to be flying business or first class on Qatar Airways, or one of its Oneworld partners, though you might be able to purchase access online ahead of time or during travel if you're flying the airline in economy or on a basic business fare.

Swiss First Class Lounge, Zurich

The first thing you see when entering Swiss' flagship lounge is a glassed-in humidor containing 1,000 bottles of wine, some of which are served at the nearby Champagne counter and in the lounge's two restaurants. Passengers with longer connections can take advantage of two fully equipped "hotel rooms," complete with Hästens beds and en-suite bathrooms. If you're just passing through, however, a rinse in one of the shower suites might suffice, while business travelers can book a conference room for meetings on the fly. Take a moment to step out onto the terrace for a breath of fresh air and views of the Alps, too.

Access: The lounge is currently closed, but will hopefully reopen soon to guests departing or connecting on Swiss or Lufthansa in first class.

Turkish Airlines Lounge Business, Istanbul

At over 60,000 square feet, and with space for 765 people, you might think Turkish Airlines' lounge at the relatively new Istanbul Airport is too large to be luxurious, but you'd be wrong. There are a variety of comfy seating areas, including individual cabines for folks who want a quiet space to nap or work. There's a multimedia room with a wall of televisions for entertainment and a business center outfitted with iMacs, plus a kids' area with a small playground. If you're feeling peckish, simply wander around to one of the various food stations for both buffet and made-to-order specialties such as pide , gözleme , and baklava . And if the lounge happens to be crowded, you can always pop into one of the private shower suites for a preflight ablution.

Access: First- and business-class passengers on Turkish Airlines and other Star Alliance flights, as well as Star Alliance Gold elites, should be able to get in.

United Polaris Lounge, Chicago

Along with rebranding its international business-class cabins and service a few years back, United also began building bespoke Polaris business-class lounges at several of its hubs. The mother ship is at Chicago O'Hare and features unique elements, like an installation by artist Wolfgang Buttress on the ceiling that mirrors the Chicago night sky, as well as relaxation areas with chaise lounge's outfitted with Saks Fifth Avenue pillows and blankets. There are also plenty of seating spaces, depending on whether you want to socialize or work, including individual pods with a single armchair and desk each. The large dining area includes a buffet and a full-service menu with dishes like mahi mahi tostadas and orange-seared chicken, as well as creative cocktails like the Polaris paloma.

Access: To enter, you must be flying United Polaris (not just the airline's domestic business or first class) or business or first class internationally on a Star Alliance carrier.

Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, London

Virgin Atlantic almost singlehandedly made flying fun again when it debuted back in the 1980s, and nowhere is that swinging spirit still on display more than in the airline's flagship Clubhouse at London Heathrow. There's a 14-meter cocktail bar for carousing with your fellow passengers, as well as a dining room with à la carte selections (like the classic Clubhouse cheeseburger), where you can also linger over a leisurely afternoon tea. Your first stop, however, should be the salon and spa desk to book a first-come, first-served complimentary hair or spa treatment, so you look your best for your flight.

Access: Heathrow Terminal 3 just reopened, so this lounge can't be far behind. To get in, you'll need to be flying Virgin Atlantic Upper Class or Delta One, or some combination of high-end elite status with Virgin Atlantic or one of its airline partners.

Travel + Leisure Readers' 10 Favorite International Airports of 2023

International airports in Asia and the Middle East continued to dominate in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

Courtesy of Narita International Airport Co., Ltd

These days, international airports are far more than just transit hubs that help travelers get from Point A to B. They're entire destinations unto themselves, with impressive (often locally sourced or inspired) shopping, dining, and entertainment options to make time onsite feel well-spent. Some Travel + Leisure readers have even found themselves wishing for longer layovers to take advantage of the plentiful amenities.

How Voting Works

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

Airports were specifically rated on the criteria below:

Check-in/security

Restaurants/bars

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

T+L readers continue to favor the big hubs in Asia and the Middle East, where many long-haul flights connect. These airports offer ample amenities for rest and relaxation, as well as shopping and entertainment.

With Copenhagen falling off the list from last year, WBA Hall of Fame honoree Zurich Airport in Switzerland holds out this year as Western Europe's only representative in the top 10.  (Hong Kong International Airport, which ranked No. 6 in 2022, also dropped from the list of readers’ favorites for 2023.) But perhaps the biggest surprise of airports to make this year’s list is Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, India, which is making its World's Best Awards debut at No. 4.

The No. 7 Istanbul Airport, a relative newcomer designed to handle 90 million passengers per year, had one voter wishing they’d had more time on-site. If there's any complaint about these airports, it's that you may find yourself running long distances for a tight connection. Of Istanbul, one respondent noted that "it's huge, and with the size comes some challenges if flight connection times are tight," but also reported they found it beautiful.

As for this year's No. 1, Singapore Changi Airport takes the top spot once more. Read on to find out why Changi still reigns and discover the other international airports that made the list.

Singapore Changi Airport: Singapore

Courtesy of Singapore Changi Airport

Since 2013, the year Travel + Leisure introduced airports to the World's Best Awards, Singapore Changi has remained at the top of the rankings. "I can't think of a better airport in the world," wrote one voter. It's not difficult to see why. Even if you've never been to the airport, you'll probably recognize the Jewel, Changi’s six-acre retail-and-entertainment complex that also features a rock-climbing wall, Singapore's largest hedge maze, and the world's tallest airport slide. But its most famous attraction is still the Rain Vortex, the world's tallest indoor waterfall, surrounded by an indoor forest with elevated walkways.

"I can't think of a better airport in the world."

These are the world's best airports: See where to take your next trip!

For years, airports were little more than stale, gray holding grounds endured only briefly before boarding and during layovers. Cramped, tandem chairs and saran-wrapped sandwiches were the status quo.

Significant innovations and attractions have transformed airports into more than just a stopover to your final destination. Efficient layouts, epicurean dining, and luxe shopping are just a few of the features turning the airport experience on its nose.

That’s why Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards added airports to its annual survey in 2013. That year, Singapore’s Changi Airport took the No. 1 spot for international hubs. And it did so the following year, too. Since inaugurating the category, Changi has come out as the best international airport every time.

Here are the top US cities to visit chosen by Travel + Leisure readers

Last year, we separated International and Domestic Airports into two distinct categories. In doing so, Portland International Airport was vaulted to the top of the U.S. list. It’s been No. 1 two years in a row, and we suspect it will continue to be a local and visitor favorite.

The next time you’re booking a flight, consider connecting to one of the world’s best airports—both small regional terminals and major international hubs made the list—and you might even find yourself actually enjoying the wait between flights.

International

1. changi international airport, singapore 89.547.

Best airports Changi

For three years in a row, Changi International Airport has asserted its superiority over all other international urban hubs. As the 15th busiest airport, Changi’s layout is necessarily intuitive and thoughtful. Hundreds of so-called “Changi Experience Agents,”sporting purple and pink blazers and wielding iPads, are on hand to assist lost, perplexed, or harried travelers. Charging stations with lock-boxes and free foot massage machines are a few of the small touches that make people pleased to idle here. There is also something clearly Singaporean about the aesthetic. There’s a two-level butterfly habitat in the new Terminal 3 filled with thousands of fluttering creatures, a Balinese-style rooftop pool, and five distinct gardens throughout the property presenting everything from waterfalls to sunflowers and orchids. Movie theaters, lounges, and authentic restaurants are great for those seeking a diversion. And for those looking to refresh, there are dedicated Snooze Lounges in every terminal. One thing is for certain—we’re sincerely looking forward to the new terminal, scheduled to open in 2017.

2. Hong Kong International Airport, China 85.067

Best airports Hong Kong

If all airports had iSports simulators, regulation golf courses, and IMAX theaters, we might (cheerfully) arrive a few hours early in the hopes of securing a bit of playtime. Kick-off the fun at the city’s Central station, where you can check your bags for a comfortable, hassle-free train ride to the airport. Fill up before boarding on tender pork dumplings at Crystal Jade, or the outpost of Michelin-starred Hung’s Delicacies. After all that action, head to the OM Spa at the connected Regal Airport Hotel. Treatment highlights include mosaic steam rooms and soothing jasmine milk baths.

3. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Netherlands 79.198

Best airports Amsterdam, Schipol

Century-old Amsterdam Schiphol Airport boasts a number of firsts. The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam is the world’s only museum annex at an airport, and for no cost travelers can spend their layovers appreciating paintings by Dutch masters such as Steen and Rembrandt. Settle into a cushy armchair at the world’s first airport library and browse the collection of tomes printed in 29 languages. Can’t get enough of this airport? A five-star Hilton will open before the end of the year. All the more reason to linger at one of the outdoor terraces and appreciate the relative airport calm made possible by the Buitenschot Land Art Park, a noise-reducing series of ridges and ripples.

4. Zurich Airport, Switzerland 77.188

Best airports Zurich

Calm and convenience are two words rarely associated with airports: or travel in general, for that matter. But as the Swiss historically do, logic and order have been enforced with an airport we can only describe as graceful. Self-service check-ins (programmed in three languages), seamless integration with the metro, and separate arrival zones for speedy security are a few of the airport’s smart innovations. Thanks to a $200 million expansion that was completed in 2011, the European hub now sports twin rooftop terraces. Board the Skymetro to enjoy the calming sounds of the Alps while shuttling between Terminals A and E.

5. Munich Airport Germany 75.615

Best airports Munich

Would you expect anything less than pint perfection from Germany’s second busiest airport? Travelers celebrate flight delays over a cold brew at Airbräu, a tavern-style biergarten with onsite brewery, live music, and a fringe of chestnut trees. Afterward, retreat to an individual, space-age sleeping pod (outfitted with iPhone and USB docks) or wake up with a cup of free coffee and complimentary copy of the Financial Times. This impressive steel-and-glass complex, with its impressive runway views from the skywalk and assortment of Bavarian pastry shops, is becoming even more notable. Before the end of this year, the airport’s new satellite Terminal 2 will be complete.

1. Portland International Airport, Oregon 79.162

Best airports Portland.

PDX shines as the best airport in the U.S., thanks to an impressive on-time departure record and convenient location just minutes from downtown. Advancements like in-line baggage screening have helped keep the process streamlined, while such quirky, crunchy granola novelties ( goats to remove invasive plant life, protected from predators by a llama ) and food trucks (steamed buns and vinegar sodas from Pok Pok) give the airport an authentic Portland vibe.

2. Tampa International Airport, Florida 76.671

Best airports Tampa International

Travelers may just choose to enter the Sunshine State via Tampa, thanks to its uncomplicated layout and light-filled rooms. The current renovation and expansion project aims to add an indoor/outdoor terrace and dozens of new concessions, as well as a new conductor-free train to teleport the airport into the 21st century. Already, modern features such as estimated checkpoint wait times have kept things sailing smoothly through security and ticketing.

3. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport 75.48

Best airports Minneapolis

Maintaining its spot at No. 3, this bustling hub doesn’t falter when it comes to cheerful service (even in the face of those horrible Midwestern winters). Shopaholics have long favored Minneapolis-St. Paul for its upscale mini-mall disposition, with storefronts like Aveda, Bose, Tumi, and Wilsons Leather making it a worthy retail destination even if you don’t have travel plans. A full-scale renovation in 2010 saw $3.2 billion in improvements to infrastructure, including two new terminals with a skyway security checkpoint.

4. Dallas Love Field, Texas 74.621

Best airports Dallas, Love Field

DFW’s little brother is moving up the ranks, beating mainstays like Charlotte Douglas and Orlando. While enplanements at Love Field plummeted when Fort Worth opened, the result was a unique, leisurely airport experience. Murals, sculptures, and paintings from local Texan artists decorate the new Terminal 2, which is also home to community-favorite food and beverage options. Wait for your next boarding call (probably for Southwest, which now has 16 gates at Love Field) while sipping a frozen margarita at Cantina Laredo.

5. Austin-Bergstrom International Airport 74.022

Best airports Austin, Bergstrom

Despite a growing volume of travelers—nearly 11 million in 2014—Austin-Bergstrom International Airport keeps flights on time and passengers pleased. The hassle-free hub is just around the corner from downtown Austin, and for those who experience serious pinings for local grub before leaving the city limits, there’s Salt Lick Bar-B-Que. The venerable local franchise serves up sauce-covered sandwiches and sides worthy of entrée portions, such as coleslaw and potato salad. Excellent customer service from check-in to departure doesn’t hurt, either.

Savannah/hilton head international named best domestic airport in travel + leisure world’s best awards 2022.

Jul 12, 2022

SAVANNAH, GA – Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (SAV) has been named the #1 Best Domestic Airport in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards 2022. This designation comes after five consecutive years of SAV ranking among the Top 10 Domestic Airports in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards.

“All of our airport employees and airport partner employees work hard day-in and day-out to ensure the customer experience at Savannah/Hilton Head International is second to none,” said Savannah Airport Commission Executive Director Greg Kelly. “This recognition is evidence that our efforts have not gone unnoticed.”

Each year, Travel + Leisure asks its readers to weigh in on their travel experiences around the world in categories spanning airports, airlines, cruises, cities, islands, tours, spas, and more. The results are then published in the Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards, creating the ultimate travel guide that is based on the opinions and first-hand experiences of Travel + Leisure readers.

This year, SAV took home the winning title in the Best Domestic Airports category, where readers rated airports on a variety of characteristics including airport accessibility, check-in/security, restaurants/bars, shopping, design, cleanliness, and more.

“We always strive to be the best and offer the best in everything we do,” said Stephen Green, Savannah Airport Commission Chairman. “It is an honor that the many readers of Travel + Leisure think we are among the best airports in the U.S. As a leisure destination airport serving the southern South Carolina and Georgia coasts, we want to be sure we make a very good impression, and this recognition confirms we are succeeding on that front.”

  • Moscow Airports: A Virtual Guide (Written by a Real-life Guide)

When you arrive in Moscow (which is what you should definitely do at least once in your life, if you’re calling yourself a traveler, no offence) by an airplane, you will most likely find yourself in one of the three major airports: Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, or Vnukovo. They all provide services of the highest quality and are on par with many major airports in Europe and United States. Moscow has always been in the top 3 of the most popular European cities in terms of traveling (whether Moscow was the final destination or just a transitional point), so maintaining the most efficient system of handling millions of people each year is now a good old tradition.

This basically means that there is no real need to pay too much attention to which Moscow airport your airplane will bring you to: you won’t be disappointed in any case. The only possible reason I can think of for you to actually be concerned about this, is if you, for example, have a business appointment somewhere in the center of Moscow, but you do not want to leave your own city for as long as you can (for whatever reason), so you want to arrive, say, half an hour before the meeting, but do not want to be late. In that case yes, it is crucial to you know where the airport is, because it defines how fast you can get to the city.

So let me give you a more detailed review of all three airports of Moscow (maybe some particular aspect of one of them will especially charm you). Since we have touched the subject of timing, let’s start with the one that is the closest to the city, and that’ll be Vnukovo.

Vnukovo:  High In The Sky

New Passenger Terminal A of Vnukovo Airport

Another fact that differentiates Vnukovo and puts it above other Moscow airports is that it is literally located higher: 205 meters above the sea level, which is good, because it means that the planes can take off even when the weather is foggy (fog covers the low grounds, and Vnukovo is basically already in the sky).

Continuing the subject of saving your time when getting to Moscow, Vnukovo has one more advantage for people who come from Europe and, for that matter, for anyone who’s flying from the western world: Vnukovo is built on (you guessed it) the west side of the city, so it helps to save another 10 to 20 minutes.

That will probably be it, I mean reviewing Vnukovo: you don’t really care exactly how many planes or people can be managed there (a lot), or about the airport’s history (nothing special), or how long the landing lines are (they’re pretty long), right? I thought so. So with that, let’s get to the next big thing in this top 3. Let me introduce you, lads and lasses, to another famous airport: Sheremetyevo.

Sheremetyevo:  Looking Ahead Is The Key

New Sheremetyevo’s Terminal D operated by Aeroflot

There are two lines for the planes to take off from (and, naturally, to land on), but they are quite near one another (280 m), so they do not work independently from each other. That, technically, could have been different, because it’s just official rules that do not allow the airport to use them in such a way. Say, in San Francisco there is an airport in which the distance between the lines is 230 meters, and the planes seem to do pretty well, without too much crushing into each other (actually, without any crushing at all). There is a plan to build a third line, for that matter, which should increase the airport’s activity by 60%.

Moscow airport Sheremetyevo is hosting the biggest company of all Russian airlines , “Aeroflot  - Russian Airlines,” and the three major international airline alliances, “Sky Team,” “Star Alliance,” and “Oneworld,” also have chosen Sheremetyevo as a go-to (or, technically, a fly-to) airport when there’s a need for to arrange a landing in Moscow.

I should stop myself again (otherwise this article will drag on forever), and give you a picture of the last (but, as usual, not the least, just the most distant from the city) airport: Domodedovo.

Domodevodo: Another Biggest One

Modern Passenger Terminal of Domodedovo Airport

If you’d walk 22 km from MKAD (or 45 km from the city center) south-east from Moscow, that’s where you’d find Domodedovo. It would be pretty hard to miss. It’s the most technologically advanced one, and it gets better and bigger every year. According to an independent British agency “Skytrax,” Domodedovo is the best airport in Eastern Europe, and the British know airports, so that’s a valuable opinion.

If you’re not yet tired of how everything in this article is the best and the biggest, here’s another rather entertaining bit of information. Remember how I said that Sheremetyevo can handle all kinds of aircrafts, but there’s an exception? Well, here’s why: Domodedovo is the only airport in Russia that can provide landing to the biggest passenger plane in the world, Airbus380 (and that thing is indescribably huge, so that’s saying something).

Well, that’s it, I gave you a brief description of all three major airports in Moscow, mostly for educational and entertainment reasons, so I tried to avoid technical or overly mundane information, but if there was something in this article that you’ve found being practical, that’s great. Finally, click the link if you wish to read another piece of important information on how to meet each other in arrivals area at one of Moscow's airports.
