Who here uses Travelzoo? This is a points and miles website, so odds are that not many of you have raised your hand. For the unaware, Travelzoo is an online travel agency (OTA) that offers discounted travel packages. These packages run the gamut from trips to Tanzania to resorts in Fiji. While it’s not always a great idea to pay cash for travel, there can be instances when it makes sense — especially if you’re booking through Travelzoo. Let’s take a look.

Travelzoo is an online travel agency that sells all types of travel packages. It competes with sites such as Travel Pirates,   Groupon , and even Costco Travel .

Travelzoo operates a little differently than competitors in that some rates are specifically negotiated for the website, while others are just good deals the site has found. Either way, Travelzoo is aiming to get you discounted travel all over the world.

It’s easy to write off purchasing travel packages, especially if you’re into points and miles. However, there can be cases when the discounts Travelzoo offers make more sense than stockpiling points. That’s especially true for high-end or hard-to-reach places that don’t have many options for points.

Be aware that the travel packages you’ll find on Travelzoo are time-sensitive. Once they’re sold out, you usually won’t find them again.

Also, the flexibility of your purchase can vary greatly. You may find a package that’s fully refundable until it expires. Others may have a shorter window. Still more may feature limited dates or have surcharges during peak season.

You’ll want to be aware of flexibility details when purchasing your Travelzoo voucher, especially when you have strict travel dates.

Probably the most iconic of Travelzoo’s offerings is the ability to book an all-inclusive travel package for your vacation that’ll cover airfare, accommodation, food, and gratuities:

Long story short: You can find nearly everything on Travelzoo, and if your desired destination isn’t available when you first look, keep an eye (and alert) out as new packages arrive all the time.

Is Travelzoo a Good Deal?

This is probably our favorite question to answer, especially for folks who aren’t used to paying money for travel. Whether or not Travelzoo is a good deal will depend entirely upon your preferences and destination. Many of these packages include economy class airfare, which you may not want to experience. And if you’re used to using points, you may balk at spending hard-earned cash on a hotel.

Let’s take a look at a package that Travelzoo is offering to the Maldives, a fan-favorite destination for award travelers.

For the second time, Travelzoo has offered the option to purchase a 5-night package to the Park Hyatt Maldives Hadahaa . Costs will vary depending on which package you book, but you can find a stay here for as little as $3,999 for a beach villa:

• Beach Pool Villa: $3,999 — 1,900 square feet and includes a pool
• Overwater Villa: $4,999 — 1,237 square feet and directly over the water
• Overwater Sunset Pool Villa: $6,499  — 1,237 square feet, over the water, and includes a pool

These rates include a discount on the site’s published price (we’ll get further into that down below), but the Travelzoo packages provide much more than just a room. You’ll also receive:

• Daily breakfast and 3-course dinner
• Bottled water in the room
• 22% taxes and gratuities already included

If you’ve ever spent any time in the Maldives, you likely already know how costly food and drinks are, especially at high-end resorts. Although this package doesn’t include alcohol or lunch, the savvy traveler can eliminate their food costs entirely with a well-timed breakfast and some snacks.

Hot Tip: Put any additional expenses on The World of Hyatt Credit Card  to earn bonus points on your vacation.

You’ll also note the ability to book directly into an overwater villa , an option that is not provided when using points.

The Park Hyatt Maldives is also on the shortlist of exclusionary hotels that will not allow you to use a Suite Upgrade Award to confirm yourself into an overwater villa beforehand. You can, if you like, use a cash copay of $600+ per night to move to an overwater villa.

So we know that we can spend $3,999 on a Travelzoo package for a 5-night stay at this hotel, but how does this compare to booking directly with cash? Those who value World of Hyatt elite status may want to earn the elite night credits associated with booking direct, or may otherwise want to take advantage of elite status benefits.

The voucher indicates that there are blackout dates of December 20 to 31, 2022, and January 1 to 10, 2023. There’s also a $150 nightly surcharge during peak season, which extends from December 15 to 19, 2022, and January 11 to February 28, 2023. You’re probably looking to avoid any extra costs after purchasing this package, so let’s take a look at rates for December 10 to 15, 2022.

Here’s that same beach pool villa, not including any meals:

As you can see, you’re already looking at more than double the cost before factoring in any meals .

Is it worth it to earn 5 elite night credits? Obviously, if you’re paying with a credit card that earns bonus points on travel, you’ll be able to plump up your stash pretty neatly here, but that’s certainly not worth it compared to spending half the amount via Travelzoo.

Of course, many travelers aren’t looking to spend money at all on their vacations, which is a perfectly respectable option. In this case, it’s not easy to compare apples-to-apples as the Travelzoo voucher books into a room category you can’t attain with points. Still, let’s take a look at how prices compare.

As a Category 7 hotel, you’ll pay anywhere between 25,000 to 35,000 points per night for your room. These are considered standard dates, which means you’ll pay 30,000 points per night:

A 5-night stay here will cost you 150,000 points in total . That’s a pretty good deal, especially when you consider that we value Hyatt points at 1.5 cents each. This means you’ll redeem just $2,250 worth of points for a beach villa. That’s an excellent value, no matter which way you slice it.

However, you can opt for a cash copay to upgrade on reward nights. In this case, upgrading to a beach pool villa as illustrated in the Travelzoo package comes with a $200+ nightly surcharge (overwater villas are $600+ nightly).

If this were an option you chose, you’d be handing out a total of 150,000 World of Hyatt points (worth $2,250) and a further $1,000 in cash for a total cost of $3,250.

Remember, however, that the Travelzoo packages include both breakfast and dinner. Unless you’re a Globalist (which will get you free breakfast), neither of these will be included with your redemption. And at a resort where tacos cost $26, be prepared to shell out a lot of money on your meals.

Plus, you’re out 150,000 World of Hyatt points when choosing this redemption, which you’d otherwise save and redeem elsewhere when using the voucher.

Bottom Line: There’s no denying that you could save a lot more money when using points to book. But for this example, in order for it to truly be cheaper than the Travelzoo option, you’ll want to stick to the base room and skimp on meals. Meanwhile, booking directly costs more than twice as much as Travelzoo’s offering. 

Purchasing a Travelzoo package is simple. The process will depend on whether Travelzoo is acting as the seller or is just directing you to another site. In cases where you purchase your voucher via Travelzoo’s website, you’ll simply add the voucher to your cart and then check out.

Otherwise, Travelzoo will send you to the travel operator’s website where you can book direct. In some cases, you’ll need to call to book, but the directions for booking will be clearly delineated.

Purchasing a Travelzoo package doesn’t usually mean you’ve actually booked the travel. Instead, once you’ve completed your purchase, your voucher will give you instructions for redemptions. This can require emailing a hotel or cruise line to find availability.

Hot Tip: Prior to buying your Travelzoo package, check availability for your desired hotel by heading directly to the hotel’s website and searching for your dates.

Once you’ve followed the instructions for redeeming your voucher, you’ll be able to confirm your booking. After that, all you’ll need to do is travel!

Since you’ll likely use cash to pay for these travel packages, you’ll want to use a credit card that will maximize your points. Travelzoo codes as travel, which means you’ll have plenty of opportunities to build up your points.

Here are some excellent options from which to choose:

• Chase Sapphire Reserve ® : Earn 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards points per $1 spent on travel
• Citi Premier ® Card : Earn 3x Citi ThankYou points per $1 spent on travel
• U.S. Bank Altitude ® Connect Visa Signature ® Card : Earn 4x points per $1 spent on travel
• Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card : Earn 2x Capital One miles per $1 spent on all purchases
• Citi Custom Cash ® Card : Earn 5x Citi ThankYou Points per $1 spent on the first $500 per billing cycle on select travel (including Travelzoo)

Let’s say that you used your Chase Sapphire Reserve card to purchase the Park Hyatt package above. The out-of-pocket cost for the cheapest package is $3,999. When using this card to pay, you’d earn 12,000 Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

We value Chase Ultimate Rewards points at 2 cents each (thanks to strong transfer partners), which means your points would be worth a total of $240. That’s not a huge amount compared to the cost of the package, but it’s certainly good for a night in a nice hotel.

You can always use cash to pay for these purchases, which can be a great idea when you’re looking to earn some extra bonus points. However, if you’re really looking to redeem points for your vacation, it’s still possible to redeem points for Travelzoo packages.

To do so, you’ll want to use a credit card that will allow you to redeem points for statement credits. There are a few different options here.

Chase Pay Yourself Back

Taking advantage of the Chase Pay Yourself Back feature when travel is an eligible category is a roundabout way to redeem points for your purchase.

Pay Yourself Back allows you to redeem your Chase Ultimate Rewards points against specific charges you make on your cards within 90 days of purchase. The categories that work for Pay Yourself Back rotate and will differ depending on the card that you hold. Travel would need to be an eligible category on your card to reimburse your Travelzoo expenses for up to 1.5 cents per point , which is the best rate you’ll find anywhere .

In short, you’ll want to buy the package, then redeem your Chase points against any eligible Pay Yourself Back purchases, essentially wiping away the cash value of your package.

Currently, the Pay Yourself Back categories do not include travel.

American Express Membership Rewards Cards

Amex Membership Rewards cardholders can reimburse their purchases via statement credits, but this only provides a value of 0.6 cents per point .

Citi ThankYou Rewards Cards

You can redeem Citi ThankYou Points for a statement credit of 0.5 to 1 cent each ( depending on the card ) against any purchase you make using your card.

Bottom Line: Consider carefully when using your miles or points for a “cash-back” or a statement credit. We value most miles and points at 1.6 to 2.2 cents each , which is far more than you’d receive when redeeming them as statement credits. 

Travelzoo isn’t for everybody, and it’s obviously a hard sell in a community focused on points and miles. However, there’s significant value to be had in the right circumstances. If you’re looking to travel somewhere without chain hotels, Travelzoo can offer discounted options and the ability to earn plenty of bonus points along the way. But that’s not all — even when you’re heading somewhere famous for points redemptions, it’s always worth taking a look at Travelzoo packages to see if a better deal is offered.

And while it’s not necessarily ideal to redeem your points for a Travelzoo package, it can certainly be done, thus rendering your vacation truly free.

It's no surprise, either. Considering the company's team of experts, Travelzoo only features the best trips, some of which you won't find anywhere else.

That being said, there are a few drawbacks as well. In recent years during the pandemic, Travelzoo has seen numerous customer complaints.

This negative feedback centrally critiqued its partners' poor customer service and shady business operations. One partner company that stood out across reviews: UTO Vacations.

For example, if Travelzoo is offering 3-night stay at a specific resort with beach-view windows and 2 queen beds, double-check with the hotel or resort provider themselves. If they're not able to confirm for you, double check with Travelzoo.

Many travelzoo members mentions that they've been let down by the discrpencies between package listing and what they offered in reality.

These issues are often to do with providers changing package specifics and deal sites not being updated frequently. These can also be as a result of poor communication between the provider and these deal package companies.

If you're unhappy or things changed, make sure to request a refund if you're eligible through travel credit. Credit card company permitting, some allow you to request a chargeback if what you've paid for clearly isn't reflected on the actual services provided.

Is Travelzoo Worth It?

I find this a difficult question to answer directly. There are very mixed reviews online when browsing all of the different websites. And because of this, I think you should browse Travelzoo, especially since it's a free service, but be cautious when using it to purchase your vacation.

It's true that sometimes people have great experiences. Unfortunately, a lot of people talk about a bad experience or a cautionary tale when they write a review, especially those that often call out these companies as scams.

Although there are fewer complaints about Travelzoo itself, there are many complaints about select partner companies. To avoid this, I'd do more reserach into the provider itself, as they're the ones that'll be offering you the specific stay or itinerary listed.

So, before you make a reservation with Travelzoo to book your next trip, make sure that you do research into the partner that you're booking with.

Travelzoo is also probably more useful for those with flexible travel plans. The best way to effectively use Travelzoo is being willing to jump on the best deals—which are sometimes not to the destination you originally planned or along the same timelines.

All in all, it never hurts to check another travel deal website to absolutely ensure you'll have no regret after booking your vacation!

Absolutely beautiful hotel and wonderful rooms . We stayed in room 23 and the decor was lovely. The bed is very comfy and the shower is great . The food is amazing as always and if you like afternoon teas then you certainly won’t be disappointed , it’s the best we have ever had . The staff are very attentive and friendly especially Tom who is fantastic at his many jobs , he deserves a mention as he is very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The big log burner in the bar is such a nice homely touch , there is nothing negative to say about the whole experience that we have had here . We will certainly be returning and booking another stay as soon as we possibly can. Thanks to Tom and the rest of the staff for our very enjoyable stay with you .

Fantastic stay

The ivy house county hotel is fantastic from start to finish Heather on reception was a ray of sunshine to great us. As this was a Travelzoo offer the room was basic but big and clean had everything we needed in a hotel room they do have better rooms but you would probably need to pay full price for them . All the staff in the restaurant are absolutely lovely the food is delicious but I think the hotel needs to promote this more as restaurant was half empty so no atmosphere the locals need to know how wonderful this hidden gem is !! Breakfast was delightful again the staff were lovely. Can’t praise this place enough had a truly wonderful stay

Travelzoo amazing

We love this site, we are retired and able to enjoy the delights of some of the deals on offer. We have used numerous 4* Hotels and great eating places, looking forward to our next trip towards the end of the month for our Wedding Anniversary. The Lakes is our favourite place and we enjoyed Scarborough last year, we try to do a few days every month or two. Day 1 - trieste (venice).

Trieste is a unique and beautiful natural location, surrounded by the Carsic hills and the Adriatic Sea.

Located in the north eastern part of Italy, this charming city is home to some stunning architecture and a beautiful sea view.

Points of Interest

Miramare Castle

This 19th century castle was built for Austrian Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian, the castle's grounds provide a setting of outstanding beauty which features numerous tropical species of trees and plants.

The Roman Theatre

The Roman theatre is located at the foot of the San Giusto hill, it's construction partially exploits the gentle slope of the hill and much of the theatre is made of stone.

Trieste's Lighthouse

Faro della Vittoria, also known as the Victory Lighthouse is one of the tallest lighthouses in the world at a height of 223 feet it offers wonderful views of the city from the top.

Second World War Monuments

Visit Risiera di San Sabba a national monument which is a testimonial of the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy. The Foibe di Basovizza is a testimonial of the extermination of Italian resistance who were thrown alive in deep canyons.

Grotta Gigante Cave

Grotta Gigante is the largest tourist cave in the world, its big enough to contain St Peter's Basilica in Rome and the Tebiciano Cave at the base which follows the Timavo River.

San Giusto Castle

The San Giusto Castle was designed on the remains of previous castles on the site built on the hill overlooking Trieste by emperors of Austria. The castle and museum are open daily and offers a wonderful panoramic view of Trieste and its surroundings.

Day 2 - Dubrovnik

10th July 2022

Dubrovnik is a walled city on the Adriatic Sea coast of the extreme south of Croatia. It is one of the most prominent tourist resorts in the Mediterranean and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Roland's Column

A slender stone flag staff of the legendary knight. Also known as Orlando's Column.

On top of the tower are the famous Zelenci, bronze statues which strike the gigantic bell every.

Big Onofrio's Fountain

The fountain stairs are nowadays a favourite meeting place for local youth and where both the tourists and pigeons take rest and refresh themselves with cool water.

Placa Stradun

The Stradun is the central street of the city of Dubrovnik and is the place where the old city comes to life.

Pile Gate and Old Town

Once inside, you'll find a wide marbled pedestrian boulevard and the 15th century Onofrio Fountain among other historical monuments.

Rector's Palace

Inside this 15th century palace you'll find a vast collection of artifacts, paintings and furniture dating back from the time of the Dubrovnik Republic.

The area is filled with beautiful contrasts-mountains and valleys, green hills and naked stone, and over 30 villages.

Day 3 - Kotor

11th July 2022

Kotor is a coastal town that lies at the head of Boka Bay. The streets of the old port are lined with tavernas and cafes, and also renowned for its summer carnival.

Maritime Museum

The Maritime Museum chronicles the memories of those long-gone sailing days and years, and Kotor's rich naval history

St. Tryphon Cathedral

The ornate St. Tryphon Cathedral was built in honour of Saint Tryphon the patron and protector of the city, it was completed in 1166 and boasts fascinating Romanesque and Byzantine architecture.

Kotor City Walls

Also known as the fortifications of Kotor, the City Walls protected the medieval town during years gone by the containing towers, gates, forts, ramparts and a castle. If you can manage the 1350 steps, you'll be rewarded with magnificent panoramic views of Kotor Bay.

Njegusi is located high in the mountains offering panoramic vistas of the coastline.

National Museum

The National Museum is housed in a former royal palace. Explore the country’s cultural capital viewing everything from war relics to art works and historical documents.

If you'd like to sample the real culture, history and tradition of Kotor then you have to visit the Old Town. The old town of Kotor is widely considered to be the best-preserved medieval urban entity in the Mediterranean.

Day 5 - Nafplion

13th July 2022

One of the most beautiful towns in the area of Argolis (in eastern Peloponnese) as well as one of the most romantic cities all over Greece, Nafplio was the first capital of the newly born Greek state between 1823 and 1834.

According to mythology, the town was founded by Nafplios, the son of god Poseidon and the daughter of Danaus (Danaida) Anymone. The town’s history traces back to the prehistoric era when soldiers from here participated in the Argonautic expedition and the Trojan War alike. The town declined during the Roman times and flourished again during the Byzantine times. Frankish, Venetian and Turkish conquerors left their mark in the town and strongly influenced its culture, architecture and traditions during the centuries. Ancient walls, medieval castles, monuments and statues, Ottoman fountains and Venetian or neoclassical buildings mesmerize the visitor with their unique architecture and beauty.

Things to do

In the very heart of the city stands the Italianate Syntagma Square where you can admire important historic buildings and monuments. Two Turkish mosques (the first used to house the first “Mutual Learning” School and now operates as a cinema/theatre whereas the second was home to the first Greek Parliament), the Archaeological Museum with important artifacts from the Prehistoric and Mycenaean Era and the Municipal Gallery are among the buildings that stand out. Very close to the modern city stand the church of Agios Spyridonas, in front of which Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias was assassinated, and the church of Agios Georgios boasting important murals such as a copy of the famous Leonardo Da Vinci work “The secret Dinner”.

The most photographed spot of Nafplio –and its point of reference as well– is Bourtzi, the Venetian small fortress standing on the rocky islet of Agioi Theodoroi. During the Venetian rule it was connected to Akronafplia through a huge metal chain that secured the port against enemy ship attacks. At the beginning of 1860 in Bourtzi used to live the executioners of Palamidi prisoners. In the summer you can reach the fortress by boat departing regularly from the port. If you are lucky enough you may even be able to attend one of the fascinating festivals taking place on the islet!

Day 7 - Split

15th July 2022

Split was originally built around the Diocletian palace where locals sought refuge centuries ago. With pine-clad hills, secluded coves and beaches it's easy to see why Split has been a premier destination since the days of the Roman emperors.

Diocletian's Palace and Cellar

An incredible walled palace that was built by the Roman Emperor of Diocletian, it is built from local white limestone and marble.

St. Domnius Cathedral

This cathedral's striking features include a colonnade of Corinthium columns, the Bell Tower that dates back to 1100 AD and breath-taking Romanesque sculptures.

People's Square and Old Town

A history buff’s dream, explore the Diocletian Palace and its monumental courtyard. Take a stroll along the Riva a bustling waterfront promenade or shop till you drop on Marmontova Street.

Temple of Jupiter

Originally the temple faced the cathedral across the Peristyle. Take a look at the barrel-vaulted ceiling and a decorative frieze on the walls.

Krka National Park

The river Krka with seven waterfalls is a natural phenomenon flowing through a limestone landscape. It’s home to more than 400 species of animal and was declared a national park in 1985.

Mestrovic Gallery

Considered Croatia's greatest sculptor Ivan Mestrovic, many of his wonderful sculptures can be seen in this museum and gallery.

Trogir - St Lawrence Cathedral

Trogir sits on top of a small island that's connected to the mainland by a small bridge. Visit the magnificent St Jacob's Cathedral and Kamerlengo Castle and fortress.

Sibenik - Cathedral of St. James

Founded in 1066, the year of the Norman Conquest, stunning Sibenik is considered an important Croatian heritage site.

Thank you for standing by. My name is Krista, and I will be your conference operator today. At this time, I would like to welcome everyone to the Travelzoo first quarter 2024 earnings conference call. (Operator Instructions) Thank you. I would now like to turn the conference over to Lijun Qi, Principal Accounting Officer. You may begin your conference.

Thank you, operator, and welcome to those of you joining us today. Please refer to the management presentation to follow along with our prepared remarks. The presentation in PDF format is available on our Investor Relations site at travelzoo.com/ir. Let's begin with slide number 4. Fellows with revenue, operating profit and member count all increased year over year. Our consolidated Q1 revenue was $22.0 million, up 2% from $21.6 million in the prior year. In constant currencies, revenue was $21.8 million, an increase of 1% year over year. Operating income which way as management core operating profit increased 19% year over year. Q1 operating profit was $5.6 million or 25% of revenue, up from $4.7 million in the prior year. As of March 31, 2024, we had $31.0 million unduplicated members compared to $30.5 million as of March 31, 2023. Slide 5 shows that revenue growth in our Europe segment more than offset slight delay decline in North America. On slide 6, we break down our categories of revenues, advertising, membership fees and other advertising revenue increased 1% year over year to $20.9 million from the prior year period. Revenue from membership fees increased 16% year over year to $1.1 million from the prior year period. On a consolidated level, we expect the revenue from membership fees to grow over time during 2024 membership fees have been waived for legacy Travelzoo members. Slide 7 shows an example of membership fee revenue recognition. Revenue from membership fees is recognized ratably over the period of the subscription member acquisition cost. On the other hand, I recognize in full at the time of the expense. On slide 8, you can see that our GAAP operating margins increased to 25% in Q1 2024. Slide 9 shows that in North America, the GAAP operating margin remained high at 31% for Q1 2024. On slide 10, we provide information on non-GAAP operating profit as we believe it better explain how Travelzoo's management evaluates financial performance. Q1 2024 non-GAAP operating profit was $6.0 million that's 27% of revenue compared to non-GAAP operating profit of $5.5 million in the prior year period. Slide 11 provide information about the items that excluded in the calculation of non-GAAP operating profit. Please turn to slide 12. We maintained a solid cash position even after repurchasing 400,000 Travelzoo shares during the quarter as of March 31, 2024. Consolidated cash, cash equivalents and restricted cash was $16.9 million, an increase of $476,000 from December 31, 2023, temporarily merchant payables, which are future payments that we have to make to partners for involuntary from Redeem decreased by $2.8 million over the same period. Slide 13 shows our revenues compared to operating expenses. Most of the company's operating expenses, except for marketing, are relatively fixed. In the short to midterm, we believe we can keep fixed costs relatively low in the foreseeable future, higher revenues would adjust increase operating margin for Q2 2024. We expect continued growth in revenue year over year, albeit at a slower pace than in 2023. We also expect for Q2 2024 higher profitability year over year. We recognize membership fee revenue ratably over the subscription period. Legacy Travelzoo members as of December 31, 2023 exempt from the fee during 2024. Therefore, we do not anticipate generating membership fee revenue from these members before 2025. Now I attended this question over to Holger.

Thank you. And as usual, we will continue to leverage Travelzoo's Global Reach or trusted brand and strong relationships with top travel suppliers to negotiate more exclusive offers for members in times of large increases in travel prices that Travelzoo is most valuable for consumers. Travelzoo members enjoy high-quality travel experiences that represent outstanding value with more than 30 million members 8 million mobile app users and 4 million social media followers. Travelzoo is loved by travel enthusiasts who are affluent active and open to new experiences. Slide 15 provides more information about Travelzoo members, 91% say they are open to new destinations and travel ideas. We are the club of travel enthusiasts. Slide 17 provides an overview of what management and our global team are focused on. We want to grow the number of Travelzoo members. We want to leverage strong existing relationships with top travel suppliers and add new relationships to negotiate more exclusive offers, utilize higher operating margins to increase EPS, grow Jack's Flight Club's profitable subscription revenue and develop travel to meta with discipline. At this point, I'd like to turn over to Christina for an update on both Qix Flight Club and travel through meta.

Thank you all gave in Q1, Jack's Flight Club subscription revenue increased 16% year over year to $1.1 million. The number of premium subscribers increased 11% year over year in 2024. We want to keep up this momentum with continued investment in member growth, including in new markets like Canada, further refine Jack's Flight Club, strong value proposition and optimize marketing. Now I'd like to speak about travel do matter. We are making progress with the production of the first metaverse travel experience. It will be browser enabled. I've stated in previous earnings calls, we are conscious of developing travelers eMeta in a financially disciplined way. We will provide additional updates in due time. I'm now handing over to the operator for questions for holder at leisure and me, Bill, we will now begin the question and answer session.

Thank you and thanks for taking my questions. I was wondering if you could talk a little bit about Jack's Flight Club, where is the growth coming from? Is it coming from mostly North America in terms of the number of subscribers and then of that growth, how many of those new subscribers are actually paid subscribers? And I was just wondering if you can kind of give us a little color on the the growth there?

Sure. I can take that question. And we have been investing more into member acquisition in the US specifically over the past quarter and year. And so a lot of the growth is coming from the US, but we still see significant member acquisition in the UK is our largest market and continues to be our largest market. So we're starting to see the US creep up a bit more to be a larger proportion of our paying members. And in general, we have been increasing our premium subscriber numbers year over year as we said and it. Yes, I think that proportion as it's becoming a larger proportion of our free members. But and we don't disclose the exact number of the premium subscribers at this time.

And next question is in terms of Europe versus the United States or North America, and obviously you had some disparity in the performance. And was just wondering what is driving the growth in Europe first? And then what what do you see happening in the United States? And maybe if you could just give us some color on the current market environment in both continents?

Sure. Look, Michael, we said that Europe is catching up after COVID, a little bit more slowly than North America. That's exactly what we are seeing now we are still seeing good growth in Europe. We're not happy that revenues in North America came in lower this quarter than last year. But look, advertising revenues always fluctuate and there's different different reasons. Sometimes offers from advertisers are not that strong. We don't feel comfortable recommending them to our members, then we lose some advertising revenue. But look, overall, we do not want to compromise on content quality and also quality. That's most important to us. Sometimes advertisers reduced their spend temporarily or in put it on hold. And so we had that we had a couple of advertisers, partners that are revamping their website changing them. So they put their advertising campaigns on hold temporarily while they are changing their strategy. But that's why we are now transforming to add subscription revenue to the revenue mix because this will increase revenues overall and also make them more stable because subscription revenue is something that will not fluctuate as much from once quarter two.

James Goss, Barrington Research.

Okay, thank you. And just to go on a little with that holder so the reason for the slippage in North American revenues was fewer deals being advertised to the client base. And that's primarily the reason for the North American revenues slippage?

What I said, Jim, it's a whole bunch of reasons and they all have together. And that's why advertising revenues fluctuate. And that's why revenues came in lower in North America than the previous year. But as I said, there's a few different reasons. Sometimes it's advertising partners. Could you just put deal campaigns on hold for a quarter or two. So as I said, there's lots of different reasons.

Okay. I think as a guidance also plan to better profitability again in the second quarter and I think believe in both North America and Europe that I didn't mention revenues above. Are you thinking revenues are still going to be fairly sluggish, particularly in North America in the current quarter?

Our press release and leisure one on S.E.T. I believe that we are expecting in Q2 revenues to also grow versus the prior year, but not as quite the same read as we saw in 2023.

Good morning and thanks for taking my question as well on Olaroz, hope to talk a little bit about the balance sheet, it looks like the balance sheet is continuing to make improvements, and it looks like the company might be on the verge of reclaiming a net positive cash position compared to the merchant payables as early as next quarter. And you mentioned that the company did buy back shares in the most recent quarter. Just trying to get your current thinking on the use of cash in a home in an environment where the company is well-funded. I'm just trying to get a sense as to whether the mix will start to shift towards using capital for some growth initiatives like Meta. I'm just trying to get your overall thoughts in terms of use of cash as the bit as the balance sheet continues to improve?

Yes, Steve, we are happy with the improvement in the balance sheet on merchant payables are probably now at a level where they will will remain quite stable over the next few quarters, which should be positive for us operating cash flow. So we expect this to go higher over the next few quarters. Now use of cash to be used in the last year on some of it for share repurchases, it was attractive. The share count has gone down quite a bit. Are we, of course, always looking at opportunities to acquire whether it's parts of businesses like we acquired a couple of times, a membership business from other companies was looking to see if there are opportunities to acquire competitors that are not doing that well. And lastly, we're in this transition now to a club model with a paid membership. And we also believe that at some point of time, we will increase our marketing spend MEMBER acquisition spend in order to drive that growth.

Yes, thank you for taking my question and congratulations on the quarter. My question is, as we're approaching the summer travel season, what are you seeing out there both in Europe and the U.S. in terms of the consumers as well as the suppliers are how they feel summer travel season is going to be?

No large changes at versus what we have seen last year. If anything, I can probably report that what we are hearing from travel partners is that while last year was the year where in particular Americans wanted to venture out, wanted to travel more internationally wanted to go to more exotic destinations, and they are now seeing on increased demand for staying closer to home. So in general, more interest in vacations in the US are less interested in exotic vacations. And also, we are hearing that January people are looking for vacations and trips where they can just relax and recover. And so I would say 2023, you seem to have been the year of activity and churn. Now 2024 may be one where we are seeing more Trintech's to vacation. Speaking on trips that that are just really allowing people to recover relax and come back home are refreshed one thing we are seeing by the way with our paid membership, and this is of course, one of the reasons why we moved to a club model is now that we are indeed what the industry is calling a closed user group, which means not everyone is a Travelzoo member only. Those who are joining were PR. Travelzoo members offer some travelers were not open to the public any longer. It's not sufficient to just entered e-mail address and purchase that offer. Now that we're in that state, we are seeing that we can source better offers. We can source offers from companies that we didn't work with before why is debt on since you know, quite a bit about the travel industry, as you probably know that price parity is a very important issue, particularly for hotels, particularly for cruise lines. So hotels don't want to show a different price, a lower price, a better offer to the public. Now, however, that Travelzoo is a club and only those who are in can see these offers, we are obtaining better offers and that in return is making the Travelzoo membership more valuable, more attractive. And that's going to be the component of what's going to drive to growth in membership and paid memberships going forward.

Greg, just going a little bit further into the summer travel season. Have you noticed any changes in people spending, whether they're spending less traveling, fewer amount of days. Any macro issues? Are you seeing any of that either in Europe, U.S. or Europe?

No, we have not tapped. It seems to be pretty similar to 2023, both in North America as well.

Yes, just a couple of quick follow-up call questions here of the I was just wondering in terms of what your experience has been so far in terms of the conversion over to the membership fees of your registered members. Are you seeing any variance from what you had in before? And at this juncture, do you have an estimate of what how much of those registered registered members will convert to on membership subscription fee.

So all is going according to plan. And according to our expectations on new members since 12 since January first, 2024, new members that joined have to pay the advertising fee sorry, the memberships, the membership fee, and we see members coming in at a rate that exceeds what we expected and the ones that joined before January first, 2024, as we said, don't have to pay in 2024. We have a plan for how we are on converting them or at least a portion of them from this complete status into paying members. We certainly don't want to we give up our entire advertising business, so we have a plan for that. You will see at the end of the year, what we're going to do. And then we also, as you saw in today's presentation, we are now breaking out revenues into advertising, membership fees and other are because we want to give, you know, the analyst as well as investors an opportunity to track the progress in how our paid membership is growing. And then as I said just responding to add, we are now creating offers that are stronger. We need to communicate and we are communicating to our existing members. The legacy members that the offering is getting stronger because that's going to be an important component to turn them into team members next year.

In hunger to that end, it was a little surprising to see sales and marketing expenses down in the quarter. I was just wondering that was an anomaly or if you can just kind of give us your thoughts of what affected that in the first quarter and or if that is a good run rate that we should be using for 2024? That's all I have. Thank you.

Very good observation, indeed. Yes, we didn't spend as much on marketing and acquisition in Q1 versus previous quarters. We expect this to change and go up in subsequent quarters.

I thank you. I have a follow-up as well. And in terms of reaching new potential paying subscribers, I wonder if you might talk a little about the marketing plans you have underway, like how you're doing it to where what tools you're trying to use, if I might provide a little color along those lines.

So it's a very wide wide range of marketing activities, mostly focused on online. But I really cannot go into all the details, Jim, because we lose quite a few tactics. Some of it's around our some of it is around specific offers some of it around communicating to nonmembers what the benefits are of joining. So all of it is really focused on communicating to those who are not yet part of the club get once you join the club of travel enthusiasts, you can expect to obtain extraordinary offers and benefits in its worth. It's worth investment.

Okay. And the other the other one, I think you might have alluded to this little with Michael's question, but and you do have plans underway to tried to address the current individuals who are getting your e-mails but are choose not to subscribe and a year you'll be rolling Arie providing us with more information later in the year. Is that what you're suggesting?

Yes, we have a plan for that. It's not going to be a change from one day to the next where things will change drastically. We have a plan for how we are converting them into paying members, you can just get that right.
