European-type city bikes are increasingly in popularity in the United States, so much so that Trek decided to bring their top-of-the-line city bikes from Europe to market stateside. The District 4 Equipped Stagger offers geometry similar to the flagship Trek Townie with larger wheels, a shorter wheelbase and longer seat tube to adapt more easily to mixed urban terrain. The success of e-bikes in the category has cleared space for more aggressive cruisers like the District 4 that emphasize the simplicity of on-bike experience instead of decreased physical exertion.

For many riders in major American cities, Trek is a controversial name. The brand has seen public outcry and boycotts in the wake of the 2020 racial justice protests for supplying police departments across the country with bikes designed for crowd suppression. However, Trek is not alone in their contentious affiliation, as others have also received condemnation for their ties to law enforcement and military contracts.

Though the online discourse is decidedly not in their favor, Trek maintains an outsized presence in cycling due to the breadth and quality of their products. Their bicycles are fitted with high-end components and backed by top-notch repairs and customer service, while their global brick-and-mortar presence makes the brand well-suited for first-time riders and avid cyclists alike.

The District range offers two bikes, a step-over model with flat bars and a step-through (Stagger) bike with swept-back cruiser bars. Each are available in Europe with the addition of an electric motor under the District+ name, though these e-bike variants have yet to make it to American shores. Both District models provide an upright riding position, while the Stagger offers more comfort at the expense of climbing ability. They are only available fully equipped (meaning with rack, fenders, and lights), as many of the accessories are integrated with the frame.

trek district 4

The District 4 Equipped Stagger is curated at the component level to make daily rides easier and more comfortable. It features a silent internal gear rear hub, a clean-running belt drive system, powerful disc brakes, and a dynamo front hub which powers the front and rear lights. No creature comfort is spared, and though the price point makes that apparent, the ability to commute safely right out of the box is tremendous.

The District 4 has ergonomic Bontrager Satellite Elite grips, which project down to support the palm, and offer dual-density pressure distribution to make holding the bars as gentle on your hands as possible. The partially-split Bontrager Commuter Comp saddle pairs well, allowing an extended upright position without sacrificing soft tissue protection. Both components are waterproof to handle any conditions.

trek district 4

The bike also comes equipped with front and rear SKS plastic fenders to keep your pants clean in the event of an unexpected drizzle. Combined with the internal hub and belt drive, it’s easy to dismount the District 4 Equipped Stagger in approximately the same state of composure as when you got on.

Though the Stagger model sacrifices the seat tube bottle mount found on the non-step through District, the down tube mount has plenty of room for a large water bottle. The loss of storage capacity is also barely missed since the large aluminum MIK-compatible rack has the size and durability to attach multiple panniers with room to spare.

trek district 4

As a frequent bike commuter from Brooklyn into Lower Manhattan, I was eager to run the District 4 through its paces to see if I could really get to work as clean and sweat-free as the lifestyle commuter promised. Mounting the bike is as easy as sitting down on a chair and the upright cruiser bar position makes back strain negligible.

I set off and was immediately awed by the silence of the belt drive system. My jangling keys were the loudest thing on the bike. Allure shortly became alarm when I realized that my silence made no impression on the pedestrians or vehicles around me. Then I noticed that the bike lacked a bell. On most bikes, the bell is a user-added preference but on the District 4 I couldn’t help but feel its absence among the included buffet of commute accessories. Plus, a bell is required in many places.

trek district 4

My ride into the city begins with a non-trivial mile-long incline, which proved the greatest challenge to the District 4. On a bike with a more traditional flat bar, one can adjust their posture to tackle an incline with only a little added exertion. The step-through Stagger model with its cruiser bar makes climbing slow at best. At 34lbs, the bike isn’t outlandishly heavy, but it bears close to 10 pounds more weight than my daily ride. I made a mental note to re-draw my route and avoid roads over a 5° incline.

On flatter roads and downhills, the District 4 really shines. The internal hub shifts are responsive and offer decent range, though I found myself topping out the highest of the bike’s 8-speeds on a few descents. Though the bike is comfortable reaching speeds up to 20mph, I experienced front wheel wobble as I neared 25mph and consequently had to readjust the fenders. Slowing down from high speed is a piece of cake for the District 4, with quick-action hydraulic disc brakes ideal for defensive urban riding.

trek district 4

The District is a head-turner, too. Fellow cyclists loved seeing the disc brakes, belt drive, and front hub dynamo-integrated lighting system. Loaded up with my groceries and bar-mounted burrito pouch, I found myself knocking out errands including an overzealous trip to the hardware store with ease.

Though I only had to perform superficial maintenance and the bike promises little need, the internal hub and belt enclosure make DIY maintenance unappealing. If something goes wrong on the District 4, you’ll probably be taking it to the shop. Luckily, there’s at least one brick-and-mortar Trek location in most major cities, including one right en route to my office.

trek district 4

The District 4 Equipped Stagger doesn’t necessarily make cycling more appealing to newcomers, but it does provide plenty of amenities for those who already enjoy the ride. The missing accessories are easily added and the route indelicacies avoided. Fender and lighting integration reduce the likelihood of theft and encourage biking for all manner of local travel.

The District 4 is the distilled essence of urban cycling without the grime, noise, or inconveniences. If you’re a regular cyclist who wants a polished, high-end, out of the box solution for easy commuting and errands, this is a bike for you.

All-New District 4

The District 4 ships with self-powered lights, fenders, a kickstand, a rear rack, and 40c tires for rough roads. There are two models: District 4 and District 4 Stagger with a step-through frame.

Trek focused on releasing a bike for people trying cycling as an alternate means of essential transportation. During Covid, according to a survey conducted by Trek in partnership with research firm Engine Insights,  of Americans who own a bike, 21% of them have been riding more. The study findings also reveal that half of Americans (50%) plan to ride their bike more after Covid

Thanks to its simple and fun design, Trek thinks the District 4 is a great solution for these new riders.

I agree.  For example, it’s taken years of product cycles for bikes to include dynohub-powered lights.

The most amazing walks in the Lake District

F or many people, the Lake District is – and only is – about walking. Well, it is almost impossible to step outside without your eyes being drawn to a mountain top. Indeed, the great fell-walker, Alfred Wainwright, identified 214 fells over 1,000 feet (around 300 metres) in the area, which should keep any list-ticker busy for several years. They range from the iconic Scafell Pike and Helvellyn to gentler (but just as rewarding in terms of views) fells such as Cat Bells.

It’s not all about height: lakeside and riverside walks can be equally diverting, and a good option for the inevitable wet and misty days. Always check the weather forecast, wear appropriate clothing and let someone know your route.

For further Lake District inspiration, see our guides to the area's best  hotels ,  restaurants ,  pubs  and  things to do . Use our  expert guide  to plan the perfect holiday in the Lake District.

Scafell Pike

If you want to stand on the roof of England, Scafell Pike is the one. At 3,208 feet (978m) high, this hike is not for the novice, but certainly possible by the average walker. The two classic routes are from Seathwaite in Borrowdale, or from Wasdale Head at the top of Wasdale. Both routes take you up to Styhead Tarn, arriving from the east and west sides, respectively. From here the standard ascent is up the so-called corridor route to the summit. Be aware, there are steep and rocky parts as well as streams and boggy ground to negotiate. It’s around an eight-mile (13k), five- to six-hour trek.

As one of the most challenging Lakeland walks, Helvellyn is not for the faint-hearted – or for those looking for a quiet day out. This 3,114 foot (949m) fell is the most popular in the Lake District; not surprising as, apart from the sweeping views over most of the Lakeland fells, and to Ullswater, Thirlmere and to the coast, it offers some testing walking. The classic route is from Glenridding, up Striding Edge and down Swirral Edge, taking in Red Tarn, the area’s highest tarn. Allow five to six hours for the seven- to eight-mile (11-13k) walk. Be warned: the two ridges are exposed, require scrambling in parts, which can cause accidents, and they are particularly dangerous in wet, icy and misty conditions.

Great Gable

Possibly the most majestic of the Lakeland peaks – even though short of the magical 3,000-foot (914m) mark, at 2,949 feet (899m) – with its uncompromising bulk and craggy and scree-riven slopes, Gable (as it’s usually referred to) offers a classic fell-walking day of steady slog, lonely tarn, satisfying rocky summit and glorious views. There are several starting points: from Seathwaite in Borrowdale, either via Styhead Tarn or via Sourmilk Gill and Green Gable; from Wasdale Head via Styhead Tarn; or from Honister Pass which also takes in Green Gable. The latter is the shortest, around six miles (10k); the others around eight miles (13k); allow five or six hours.

For many people, this lovely grassy wave-like fell is their first 'proper' fell-walk. Rising above the western shores of Derwentwater, it’s a gentle 1479-foot (451m) climb and can be done by families with young children (it takes around two hours). It is popular, however; parking can be tricky and a better option is to take the launch across the lake from Keswick to Hawse End pier and follow the well-marked path from there. From the summit, the views of the surrounding higher fells, with the lake below on one side, and quiet Newlands valley on the other, are glorious.

Wansfell Pike

This circular, and not too demanding, walk offers a choice of starts: Troutbeck village or Ambleside town centre. From Troutbeck, a village north of Windermere, it’s an easy-ish, signposted track up to the rocky top of Wansfell (1588 feet/484m) from where there are superb views over Windermere and its surrounding fells, including the Langdale Pikes. A track descends to Ambleside and returns to Troutbeck across Wansfell’s lower southern slopes. The Mortal Man ’s beer garden at Troutbeck, with breathtaking views, makes a fitting finish after walking around six miles (10k); allow three to four hours.

Arrive in Grasmere along the A591 and you cannot fail to notice the craggy outline of Helm Crag (1328ft; 405m) towering above the village, and variously dubbed ‘The Lion and the Lamb’ or ‘The Grand Piano’ depending from which angle it’s viewed. These huge tilting slabs of rock look almost like a sculptures. Walk directly from the village centre up Easedale Road and through the grounds of Lancrigg House. Then it’s a short but steady upward climb – steep in parts, though on a good path – to the top. Best not to climb on the craggy summit rocks – there’s a sharp drop on the other side – unless you have good balance. But you don’t need to clamber on them to enjoy the exhilarating views south over Grasmere and, beyond, to Windermere. Allow two-and-a-half hours for the walk to the top and back, around four miles (6k).

The Coffin Trail

Despite the uninviting name, this is a gentle walk along the slopes of Nab Scar above the northern shores of Grasmere and Rydal Water. It used to be the route for carrying coffins from Rydal and Ambleside to the consecrated ground of St Oswald’s church graveyard in Grasmere, hence the name. An easy-to-follow track through a mix of open fellside and woodland, it starts from behind poet Wordsworth's Dove Cottage just outside Grasmere and comes out two miles later above the poet's final home, Rydal Mount. Cross the main A591 and either take the easy lakeside paths back to the village or strike upwards past Rydal Caves to Loughrigg Terrace and lovely views over the two lakes before taking either high- or low-level paths back to Grasmere village. Allow between two and three hours (4-5 miles, 6-8k).

Ennderdale Water

Plenty of the lakes offer waterside walks with splendid views of magnificent peaks and dreamy reflections, but usually also accompanied by hordes of people. Ennerdale Water, on the other hand, escapes the crowds mainly because there’s no road around the lake (there are car parks at the western end) which means you can enjoy the seven-mile (11km) circuit-walk with little chance of meeting more than a handful of others. You can include a scramble up Angler's Crag for extra exertion. The reflections of the surrounding peaks in the water are mesmerising.

The Last of Us

“ The Bear ,” “Bluey,” “Reservation Dogs,” “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” “The Last of Us” and “Jury Duty” are among the series set to receive this year’s Peabody Award, the org was set to announce on Thursday morning. The Peabody Awards’ board of 32 jurors have selected 34 winners, all of which received unanimous vote from TV, podcast/radio and web/digital nominees in entertainment, news, documentary, arts, children’s/youth, public service, and interactive programming.

Popular on Variety

Peabody also announced that Oscar- and Emmy-nominated comedian/actor/writer Kumail Nanjiani will host this year’s 84th annual  Peabody Awards at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel on Sunday, June 9. This reps the Peabody Award’s return to an in-person event for the first time since 2019, and also its first time in L.A. — having previously been held in New York (and virtually over the past four years during the pandemic and Hollywood strikes).

“Through his emotionally powerful and culturally relevant writing and acting, Kumail has established himself as one of the most impactful comedic storytellers working today,” Jones said. “Kumail never fails to make us laugh, and we are so thrilled he will host our first ever awards ceremony in LA and our first awards ceremony in five years.”

As previously announced, Mel Brooks was named winner of the Peabody Career Achievement Award while Quinta Brunson won the Peabody Trailblazer Award. Variety is the media partner for the Peabody Awards ceremony; Peabody is based at the Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication at the University of Georgia.

Among themes addressed in the Peabody winners: women’s health, the justice system, the wars in Gaza and Ukraine and family. Here are this year’s Peabody Award winners:
