How to Tour the Treasury Department

visit us treasury

Updated July 7, 2020.

It’s Museum Monday! Today I’m letting you in on a well-kept secret. You can visit the Department of the Treasury in Washington, D.C.! Who knew, right? I’ve lived here nearly 10 years, and I never knew until just recently that this was available. It does take a bit of planning and legwork on your part, so let’s get started!

 Know Before You Go

Before you request your tour, here are some tips and things to be aware of before you make your plans:

  • It’s FREE!
  • The Department of Treasury Building is located one block east of the White House at 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW.
  • Tours are only offered on Saturdays; this excludes some holiday weekends.
  • All tour guides are volunteers who work at the Treasury Department as their day job.
  • Tours are offered at 9:00am, 9:45am, 10:30am, and 11:15am.
  • They claimed the tour lasts about an hour… for us it was 1 hour and 45 minutes! Be prepared for that!
  • No strollers or backpacks are allowed, and there is no storage onsite.
  • No photography inside (I can’t tell you how disappointed I was about that!), but you may take photos in the courtyard by the replica of the Liberty Bell.
  • Want to see how they make the money? That’s a different tour! You want the Bureau of Engraving and Printing .

How to Request Your Tour

1. visit the department of treasury website.

Visit the website at the link above for the latest and greatest info. They even have a system in place to make finding and contacting your Congresspeople easy.

Screen Shot 2017-11-06 at 5.49.45 PM

2. Contact Your Congressperson

Use the “Contact Senator” and “Contact Representative” buttons pictured above ( and linked here ) to find out who your Congresspeople are (every American has two Senators and one Representative, so you will have three options!) and contact their office to schedule your tour. They will send you an Excel document to fill out with your name, date of birth, social security number, whether you are a citizen or not, country of citizenship, gender, and city and state of citizenship (or city where you are staying if you are from another country).

More here: D.C. Tours to Request in Advance

3. wait for a confirmation e-mail.

Two weeks before your tour date, you will receive an e-mail confirmation for your tour. Didn’t receive an e-mail? You didn’t get in–sorry! The e-mail will tell you when and where to report. We gave our Congressperson’s scheduler four dates we would be available, with our #1 preference first. Our first choice was December 2 for the 11:15, but we got December 2 at 9:00. Be flexible! You do not need to print anything to take with you as your ticket, but have the confirmation e-mail ready just in case. I kept mine on my smartphone for quick access.

Here is the attachment we received for more information:

Screen Shot 2017-11-22 at 10.44.28 AM

The Day of Your Tour

1. show up early.

And at the right location! Your confirmation e-mail will tell you to arrive 5-10 minutes early . So we planned to get there at 8:45am for our 9:00am tour, just in case. (We like to run early!) You should meet at the West Entrance at Executive Boulevard and Pennsylvania Avenue, but there was no sign. We realized that you can check in at the White House checkpoint, so don’t be fooled! You can Metro (not sure how to Metro? Check out  D.C.’s Metro System: A Guide ) to McPherson Square on the Orange, Blue, and Silver Lines.

Want more? Check out D.C. Tours Your Never Knew You Could Take!

2. have your photo identification (id) ready.

If you are 16 or older and don’t have ID, you don’t get in. Those under 16 do not need an ID, just the company of an adult with ID. Acceptable forms of ID are:

  • State Driver’s License
  • Government-issued ID card

3. Take a Photo with the Liberty Bell and Enjoy Your Tour!

This is the one place where you can get a photo, so take advantage of it! As for the rest of the tour, take it all in and listen for the history and significance of the building. Enjoy, and feel free to ask questions!

IMG_2600

And you won’t leave empty-handed! You will be given a detailed brochure and approximately $25 in shredded cash!

IMG_2609

Are you ready to get your own tour scheduled? I recommend it! Find all you need about your trip to D.C. on my Washington, D.C. Page !

The cash is such a great idea for gifts! Yeah, it’s their trash, but a really good souvenir.

Right?! Too funny. Hope you liked the post! We can try to go on a tour next time you come up to visit!

dinkgo Avatar

This will definitely be on our list next time we visit D.C., the free museums and sites are fantastic!

It’s a great one! I also have guides for visiting the White House and Capitol, and I have a post coming out Monday all about touring the State Department! Stay tuned!

[…] Not to be confused with the Bureau of Engraving and Printing! This tour is not as difficult to get, but it’s only offered on Saturdays, so it’s much more specific than the rest. I recommend requesting this tour through your congresspeople at least two months in advance. For details, check out How to Tour the Treasury Department. […]

Statement from President Joe   Biden on Iran   Sanctions

Less than a week ago, Iran launched one of the largest missile and drone attacks the world has ever seen against Israel. Together with our allies and partners, the United States defended Israel. We helped defeat this attack. And today, we are holding Iran accountable—imposing new sanctions and export controls on Iran.   The sanctions target leaders and entities connected to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s Defense Ministry, and the Iranian government’s missile and drone program that enabled this brazen assault. As I discussed with my fellow G7 leaders the morning after the attack, we are committed to acting collectively to increase economic pressure on Iran. And our allies and partners have or will issue additional sanctions and measures to restrict Iran’s destabilizing military programs.   During my Administration, the United States has sanctioned over 600 individuals and entities—including Iran and its proxies, Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and Kataib Hezbollah. And we will keep at it. I’ve directed my team, including the Department of the Treasury, to continue to impose sanctions that further degrade Iran’s military industries.   Let it be clear to all those who enable or support Iran’s attacks: The United States is committed to Israel’s security. We are committed to the security of our personnel and partners in the region. And we will not hesitate to take all necessary action to hold you accountable.

Settlement Agreement between the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control and SCG Plastics Co., Ltd.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) today announced a settlement with SCG Plastics Co., Ltd. ("SCG Plastics"), part of a multinational enterprise headquartered in Bangkok, Thailand.  SCG Plastics has agreed to pay $20,000,000 to settle its potential civil liability for 467 apparent violations of OFAC sanctions on Iran.  From 2017 to 2018, SCG Plastics caused U.S. financial institutions to process $291 million in wire transfers for sales of Iranian origin polyethylene resin manufactured by a joint venture in Iran.  The $20,000,000 settlement amount reflects OFAC's determination that SCG Plastics' apparent violations were egregious and, with the exception of certain transactions, were not voluntarily self-disclosed.

China, US defence chiefs hold first substantive talks in nearly 18 months

Lloyd Austin and Dong Jun talk South China Sea, Taiwan, North Korea and Ukraine in wide-ranging discussion.

US and China flags against a black backdrop

United States Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin and his Chinese counterpart Dong Jun have held their first substantive talks in nearly 18 months as the two countries work to restore military ties.

The two spoke via videoconference on Tuesday, the Pentagon said in a statement.

Marcos jr treads fine line with china as philippines deepens us, japan ties, summit with us, japan aimed at economy, south china sea cooperation: marcos, russia and china to deepen security cooperation in asia, europe, from unfair trade to tiktok: us treasury secretary yellen’s china trip.

It said Austin “underscored the importance of respect for high seas freedom of navigation guaranteed under international law, especially in the South China Sea”.

An escalating diplomatic dispute and recent incidents between China and the Philippines , a US treaty ally, at a disputed shoal have turned the strategically significant South China Sea into a potential flashpoint between Washington and Beijing.

China claims the sea almost in its entirety while Brunei, Malaysia, the Philippines and Vietnam claim the areas around their coasts.

An international court ruled in 2016 that China’s nine-dash line , on which Beijing bases its claim, was without merit.

“The US side should recognise China’s firm position, respect China’s territorial sovereignty and maritime rights and interests in the South China Sea, and take practical actions to safeguard regional peace,” Dong was quoted as saying in a statement by China’s Ministry of Defence.

He also warned the US over the democratic island of Taiwan, which Beijing claims as its own, emphasising it was the “core of China’s core interests”.

Austin’s last significant interaction with China’s defence minister was in November 2022 when he met Wei Fenghe in Cambodia.

Wei was subsequently replaced by Li Shangfu, who shook hands and spoke briefly with Austin at a security conference in Singapore last June, but steered clear of a formal meeting. Li, who was under US sanctions, disappeared from view shortly afterwards and was fired in October. Dong was appointed in December.

Ways to ‘get along’

The US and China have been working to improve a relationship that had become increasingly acrimonious over issues from Taiwan to the South China Sea, as well as trade and human rights.

US President Joe Biden met Chinese President Xi Jinping in California last November where they agreed to stabilise the relationship and resume military ties which had been frozen as a result of then-US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan.

The US’s top military general later held discussions with his Chinese counterpart and this month, US and Chinese military officials met in Hawaii to discuss ways the two countries could operate safely.

China and the US should explore ways to “get along” and “gradually accumulate mutual trust” by building a “non-conflict, non-confrontation”, pragmatic and cooperative relationship between their militaries, Dong was quoted as saying on his call with Austin.

“The military sphere is the key… to stabilising the development of the relationship and preventing major crises from occurring,” he said.

Austin also stressed the need to maintain open lines of communication to reduce the risk of potential flare-ups or deal with any accidents.

“Secretary Austin emphasized the importance of continuing to open lines of military-to-military communication between the United States and the PRC,” the Pentagon said, using an acronym for the People’s Republic of China.

The Pentagon said the two men also discussed issues including Russia’s war in Ukraine and North Korea.
