EA Sports PGA Tour Release Date, Features Mechanics, Details, Roster

For the first time in eight years, EA Sports returns to the golf course with a new PGA Tour game, set to reboot the golfing franchise that has been around since 1999. Here are the PGA Tour Release Date, features, and mechanics that you need to know.

First announced in March 2021, EA Sports PGA Tour is going to be the first new PGA Tour game published by EA Sports since 2015's Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, which was also incidentally the first game in the series not to feature golfing legend Tiger Woods in its cover and title.

EA Sports PGA Tour Release Date: April 7, 2023

EA Sports PGA Tour, not to be confused with 2K's own PGA Tour 2K23, will be coming out on  April 7, 2023 , on PS5 , Xbox Series X , and PC via the EA App, Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Pre-orders are now open for the game, which will cost $69.99 for the standard edition and $84.99 for its Digital Deluxe Edition.

EA Sports' return to the green is illustrative of the growing market in golfing, a sport that saw a resurgence during the pandemic years and has continued receiving new patrons since. However, the game will have to top a video game rival in the form of 2K Sports' own PGA Tour 2K23. Hence, anyone who played PGA Tour 2K23 and found it lacking could try out and see if EA Sports' own attempt of acing it in one would work better for them.

EA Sports PGA Tour Features and Mechanics: The Home of The Majors

EA Sports PGA Tour boasts having dibs on the world's most exclusive dibs, along with its exclusive rights over depicting The Majors in a video game. It is indeed one of the pillars of the game's development, delivering what EA calls the “#1 Most Requested Feature” to fans. The game will also feature 30 realistic and accurate “bucket list” courses designed using the Frostbite engine using photogrammetry data at launch, “Pure Strike Gameplay” powered by Shotlink which EA promises to be fun to play that prioritizes gameplay over realism and a more fleshed-out career mode that has more RPG mechanics that let players choose where their career starts (i.e., through the amateur scene and the Korn Ferry Tour) and how their skills are spread.

Home of the Majors and the FedEx Cup  – As previously reported here at ClutchPoints, the game will be featuring the FedEx Cup . On top of that, players will be able to “live the fantasy” of chasing trophies and of course, the coveted Green Jacket, through the different Majors available to play in the game.

The World's Most Exclusive Courses – Augusta National, St Andrews, East Lake, Torrey Pines, and Riviera Country Club are just some of the thirty exclusive “Bucket List” courses that players will get to play in at launch, all meticulously modeled using photogrammetry obtained with the use of helicopters, planes, and drones for a more realistic, more authentic feel of the golf course.

Evolved and more accurate physics engine  – Using the Frostbite Engine and the aforementioned Shotlink and Trackmaster features in the game, EA Sports PGA Tour offers the most accurate and most precise shot swinging, hitting, and putting experience a golf video game can offer through its game's mechanics, so accurate that EA claims they expect PGA pros will use their game in testing their swings before using them in actual matches.

Career Mode and Multiplayer  – Players will be able to simulate an entire career of golfing which could lead them to the Majors and the PGA Tour, a journey that they don't have to do alone, as they can play with up to 16 players in the game's online multiplayer game mode, where all players golf simultaneously.

EA Sports PGA Tour Roster

Players can expect to either play as or play against the world's top PGA and LPGA Tour players, including the following:

  • Scottie Scheffler
  • Nelly Korda
  • Danielle Kang
  • Patrick Cantlay
  • Lexi Thompson
  • Jordan Spieth

All of the players part of the EA Sports PGA Tour roster have been rendered as realistically as possible using body motion and scanning technology, rendered using EA's proprietary Frostbite Engine.

Also included in EA Sports PGA Tour's roster is the commentary team. EA says that they put together a lot of resources to offer a presentation that makes it feel like the player is actually part of a live television broadcast. The game will feature hundreds of hours of recordings from the likes of Frank Nobilo, Rich Lerner, Notah Begay, Iona Stephen, and Sir Nick Faldo.

Of course, your own customizable character is also part of the EA Sports PGA Tour roster is included, which you can customize with loads of different apparel and gear from 40 notable brands like Bad Birdie, Titleist, Golf Pride, and TaylorMade.

EA Sports PGA Tour: Standard vs. Deluxe Edition

EA Sports PGA Tour will be launching in both Standard ($69.99) and Deluxe ($84.99) editions.

Preorders: Pre-ordering the game will give players a set of cosmetics for their player. The Standard Edition will have The PLAYERS Gear, The Grand Slam Gear Bundle, and the Scotty Cameron Putter. The Deluxe Edition will have 3-day early access before the EA Sports PGA Tour release date, early access to the Augusta National featuring a limited-time online tournament, and a PGA Tour XP Bundle to jumpstart their career in-game.

Deluxe Edition:  On top of the pre-order bonuses, players who purchase the deluxe edition will also receive The Masters Gear, The Grand Slam Gear Bundle, the Scotty Cameron Putter, 1,500 in-game premium credits, and The PLAYERS Gear.

PGA Tour Post-Launch Content:  Finally, EA Sports also promises to release post-launch content throughout the golfing calendar, featuring different aspects of the professional golfing scene. As the launch focuses more on thee Road to the Masters, future updates will then move on to the PGA Championship, the US Open, the FedEx Cup, and finally, the Ryder Cup.

It only seems like the biggest features in EA Sports PGA Tour , which launches April 7, are the ones that fans already played and enjoyed a decade ago. Augusta National Golf Course and all four of the men’s major championships are in; even things like boosted drives with “big-hit moment” camera changes are making a return.

But focusing only on the return of the Masters Tournament, or the visual fidelity with which Augusta National and other courses are presented, would sell short what I saw in a presentation last week. Namely, a career mode that is even more RPG-like than before, offers more ways to customize and mold your created golfer’s playing style, and looks like it will swallow just as many of my evenings as the old Tiger Woods games did.

EA Sports PGA Tour looks like a game where, even though there will be more real-life professionals on the roster than ever, the developers understand that the users themselves are the real stars of the show.

“Even when we had Tiger, over 97% of people play as a created player,” producer Ben Ramsour told Polygon in an interview after the presentation. “So we know that’s a core motivation. However, we’ve done a lot to build these relationships with these pros, and we want to tell their stories in the game.”

Granted, I couldn’t pull much from a single glimpse of the detailed golfer progression screen we were shown. But players will rank up 10 different skills (each with 10 ranks) as they acquire skill points with each level. Lead producer David Baker even intimated that at advanced levels, players will be able to unlock packages of traits that will make their golfer’s abilities resemble the playing styles of the PGA’s and LPGA’s biggest stars.

Publicity headshot of Ben Ramsour, producer for EA Sports PGA Tour, dated 2023

All of this leans into new gameplay that continues to offer broad-based shot-shaping features and differentiates them even more with 20 shot types, some of which are unlocked in the later stages of attribute progression. Those shot types may also be ranked up, it seems.

“I think a big thing is experimentation,” Ramsour said, noting that players can again create multiple avatars and progress them individually. He also said, “We want users to see, Hey, Tony Finau’s game really matches well to Augusta, but it’s terrible for Harbour Town .”

This is surfaced through a nifty little menu that I saw called Course Fit, which stole the show as far as something new that will connect me more to my created golfer. Course Fit, seen on the course selection screen, gives players a relative view of their skills versus what the course will expect of a winning player. Five attributes — Power, Driving, Approach, Short Game, and Putting — all have bars; the closer a player’s bar is to the course’s, the more they’ll be able to take advantage of that characteristic.

It’s not an attribute boost; it’s just visual information that will give me a sense of just how risky my ideas are on the second shot of, say, one of East Lake Golf Club’s par-5 holes, or how important it’s going to be to stick this approach at Pebble Beach, where there’s a demanding putting game waiting for me.

Publicity headshot of David Baker, lead producer of EA Sports PGA Tour, dated 2023

“So for me, I want to win the major championships,” Ramsour said. “So in my primary created player, I am leveling up the shot types to win the four majors. But eventually, I’m going to want to win every single tournament on the hardest mode. So I know I’m going to have to be less of a bomber and more precise to win at Harbour Town.”

Although players may have multiple created golfers, most stick with one for Career. They will most likely see all of the differences Ramsour mentioned in Challenges, a separate mode, but one that has a supplementary effect to Career.

Challenges, to me, resembled the kind of bite-sized moments available in Madden Ultimate Team’s single-player offering. Indeed, they’ll be live-service content, driven by real-world occurrences, and like MUT, they’ll use different players in addition to the created pro. Baker said that the challenges are designed to play like between-rounds practices, meaning they’ll be shorter experiences focused on a particular skill or a particular moment.

The rewards will be skill points for use in created-player progression, as well as clubs and cosmetic items they can equip. (Importantly, these clubs, equipment, and apparel do not affect player attributes, as they may have in the past.) Golfers can expect a season-based approach here that other online sports video games have adopted.

All of these modes, players, and courses — 30 at launch, the most ever for the standard edition of an EA Sports golf title — mean little if the core gameplay isn’t tight, informative, and understandable. While the event last week was not hands-on, the developers focused on the swing mechanism and the 20 shot types supporting it in a one-hole demonstration at Augusta’s No. 13.

Best example: a “stinger,” which is a lower but safer shot from the tee. Gameplay designer Craig Penner used the stinger to rope a 266-yard drive with Jordan Spieth that still hugged No. 13’s famous left-hand sweep — it just used the downhill fairway to get its distance. In the end, Spieth sacrificed about 10 yards of distance to make a safer shot. This is something I would often try to replicate in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 , but the lowest trajectory that game offered didn’t come close to what I saw last week.

Casual headshot of Craig Penner, the gameplay designer for EA Sports PGA Tour

Ramsour, playing as 2022 Masters winner Scottie Scheffler, used a boost-assisted power drive — impressive, and successful, but still a dangerous shot that is a blind approach, and which could clip the treetops if not executed perfectly. But again, Scheffler is longer off the tee than Spieth, so both golfers were playing to type and taking, or avoiding, appropriate risks (especially as they were highlighted by Course Fit).

I was also struck by the bits of commentary we heard from the game as the demonstration played out. For once, it sounded like the broadcast team was actually watching what was being played. Lead commentator Rich Lerner returns from 2015’s Rory McIlroy PGA Tour , and on Penner’s shot with Spieth, I heard him discussing the use of the fairway’s width and slope to get the desired result.

Returning broadcast partner Frank Nobilo (and new course reporters Notah Begay III and Iona Stephen ) also provided context-appropriate color, a dramatic improvement over past games, which mostly offered generic repetition.

“We have tech that delivers detailed analysis on how putts will break,” Baker said in last week’s presentation. “There’s also a system that connects the field reporter analysis of the current situation, and also highlights landmarks from our great list of courses, to tell historical stories from those exact spots on the course.”

EA Sports PGA Tour launches Friday, April 7 — during the second round of the Masters — on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X . Those who pre-order the $84.99 deluxe edition will get access to the game on Tuesday, April 4. The deluxe edition has additional in-game content, such as virtual currency for the in-game pro shop’s items and an XP boost.

Update (March 3): EA Sports has announced that EA Sports PGA Tour will be delayed two weeks from its originally announced release date, and will now arrive on April 7. This story has been updated with the new date.

'EA Sports PGA Tour' 2023 release date, price, courses, consoles and more on newest golf video game

Those who indulge will be able to play at major championship venues such as augusta national.

when does pga tour ea come out

EA Sports is officially back in the golf video game space with its impending release of "EA Sports PGA TOUR". Marking its first venture back to the golf scene since "Rory McIlroy PGA Tour" in 2015, the return to consoles will feature stark contrasts compared to those that came before. Having previously featured cover athletes such as McIlroy and primarily Tiger Woods from 1999-2014, this year's edition of the game will not include a big-name superstar on the cover. EA Sports will instead lean on new gameplay options, advanced technology and the inclusion of some of the most storied golf courses around the world.

Below is everything you need to know ahead of the upcoming release of "EA Sports PGA Tour".

Release date

The official release date for "EA Sports PGA TOUR" is Friday, March 24, just two weeks before the 2023 Masters. This makes some sense as the game will feature a Road to the Masters gameplay option.

Price and consoles

The game will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Featuring three different editions, each will come at a different price point. The "Deluxe Edition" is available for pre-order at $84.99 while the "Standard Edition" comes in at $69.99. Lastly, the "EA Play Pro Edition" is listed at $99.99/yr.

The game will include 30 courses in total, and boasts some of the world's most prominent venues such as Augusta National Golf Club, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Southern Hills Country Club, The Old Course at St Andrews Links, The Country Club, Kiawah Island Golf Resort's Ocean Course, Torrey Pines, Evian Resort Golf Club in Évian-les-Bains, France, East Lake Golf Club, TPC Southwind, The Los Angeles Country Club, Wilmington Country Club and more. It will also feature the major host courses from 2021 and 2022 as well as the new 2023 majors courses releasing post-launch.

You can play the game as Scottie Scheffler, Cameron Champ, Xander Schauffele, Sungjae Im, Nelly Korda, Lexi Thompson, Jordan Spieth, Tony Finau and Hideki Matsuyama.

My Career mode

The game will include a role playing game mode-type progression in the Road to the Masters. As one's golf game improves, the likelihood of donning the green jacket or raising a major championship trophy increases. Users will be able to create and customize a golfer and develop their skills through the 20 different shot types available. From there, players will compete in major championships, participate in some of the PGA Tour's best events -- such as The Players Championship -- and ultimately the FedEx Cup. In addition to this, players can take on top amateur championships including the Augusta National Women's Amateur, the U.S. Amateur and other elite international amateur events.

LPGA and the Amundi Evian Championship

In partnership with the LPGA, fans can compete at The Amundi Evian Championship, one of the LPGA Tour's five major championships. They will also have the opportunity to play as several female athletes as well as create a female golfer in the Create-A-Player feature and be able to participate in a series of LPGA-themed challenges and other events.

New technology

  • True-to-Life course visuals:  EA's Frostbite engine uses state-of-the-art equipment such as drone technology, custom LiDAR flight helicopters and more to develop terrain maps allowing to game to depict courses exactly as they appear in real life
  • ShotLink:  Golfers will authentically be replicated with accurate player ratings, skills and magnified true-to-life in-game events by utilizing the PGA Tour's proprietary real-time scoring system since 2001.
  • Trackman data:  Insights from TrackMan will allow for authentic gameplay utilizing a myriad of stats including club tuning, flight trajectory, landing position and much more.

What about Tiger Woods?

Woods is no longer with the EA Sports family after their partnership from 1999-2014. The 15-time major champion is now with the 2K franchise , and made it known to his followers where they can play as him.

The only way to play as me, and my friends, is in PGA TOUR 2K23, available now. #team2k pic.twitter.com/5lwCJ73o4v — Tiger Woods (@TigerWoods) January 20, 2023

TheApexHound went head-to-head with one of EA Sports PGA Tour's producers, Ben Ramsour, in an 18-hole match across two of the game's incredible courses.

The pair played through the front nine holes at Bay Hill, and then the infamous back nine at TPC Sawgrass, including the treacherous 17th hole surrounded by water!

It was the first real look at the online gameplay that will be available to fans, and it did not disappoint.

The graphics on the game look incredible, and the level of detail used in recreating the courses is unprecedented.

There were two editions of EA Sports PGA Tour released on launch day.

Early access was included as part of the more expensive edition of the game, along with several other bonuses!

This means that the Digital Deluxe Edition £84.99 of EA Sports PGA Tour came with early access, but the Standard Edition will not.

The Standard Edition of the game will set you back £64.99, but comes with far fewer in-game perks, and of course no early access period.

As this is the first instalment of EA Sports PGA Tour, there was no prior history to tell us if it would be available to EA Play subscribers.

However, like most of EA's major sports titles such as FIFA and Madden, EA will offer a 10-hour trial for EA Sports PGA Tour.

The free 10-hour EA Play trial became available on Tuesday, 4 April .

EA Play subscribers will also be offered a 10% discount when purchasing the game.

In case you missed it, there are 30 courses to choose from on launch day, all brought to life through some incredible technology shown off during EA's deep dive into the course creation.

Each course will have a unique feel, with characteristics changing based on a variety of factors, including the grass type!

The mechanics behind the courses are so detailed that caddies are suggesting using the game to help them read the greens on the real-life PGA Tour!

With all this to look forward to, we may be about to witness one of the most realistic sports titles ever produced.

EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ Patch Notes 9.0

Take a look at upcoming changes coming to ea sports pga tour..

On November 21st, EA SPORTS™ PGA TOUR™ will receive an update that includes a new season, a number of gameplay improvements, and game-wide bug fixes. Read on to learn about what’s coming next.

Welcome to Season 8!

The “Short” aiming arc setting has been replaced with two new options: “Long” and “Tour”. “Long” functions the same as “Short”, but shows a slightly longer ball flight than “Short”. “Tour” only shows the ball flight to the apex and it does not include the effects of wind, slope, or lie penalty. “Long” is now the default setting for Arcade and Pro gameplay styles and “Tour” is now the default setting for Tour gameplay style. Apart from checking your gameplay settings, you can tell which aiming arc you’re using by its length or by noticing that “Long” sways in the wind while “Tour” does not. Here’s an example of what the new “Tour” arc looks like in gameplay.

The capabilities of the Putting skill have expanded so that it now affects the scale of the Putting Grid. Golfers with a lower Putting skill will see a Putting Grid with larger grid squares, while golfers with a higher Putting skill will see a Putting Grid with smaller grid squares. This is intended to simulate a golfer’s ability to read greens.

Shot dispersions for these shot types have been updated:

  • Pick: Increased shot dispersion length and slightly decreased shot dispersion width for lower skilled golfers.`
  • Blast: Decreased overall shot dispersion.
  • Finesse: Increased overall shot dispersion.
  • Knock Down: Decreased shot dispersion length.
  • Stinger: Decreased shot dispersion width.

Due to the volume of gameplay changes that have been made this season, the cost of retraining skills has been reduced from 200 to 50 Reward Points per Skill Point.

Gameplay visuals have also seen a couple of noteworthy improvements. The rotation of the ball model has been updated to be more realistic and no longer appears to sometimes spin as the ball stops rolling. Note that this change has no effect on ball physics, it only affects the visuals of the ball. Also, the putt meter is now brighter so that it has improved visibility on courses with lightly colored greens such as The Country Club.

Pro Pass has been paused for this season, but will be returning in Season 9 with new content.

Online and Tournaments modes have been updated to allow any number of random holes to be selected for a round. Going forward, this will be used in 4, 6, and 9 hole Daily Tournaments so that holes are randomly selected for each Tournament instead of using the same sequence of holes. In Online formats, 9 holes will now be randomly selected instead of only playing the front or back nine.

Lastly, we’re expanding Online formats on PC only to allow players to use 3-Click Swing Mechanic when playing with Pro gameplay style.

  • Superior Brute Series: These Specs significantly improve both Power and Recovery attributes.
  • Superior Precision Series: These Specs significantly improve both Accuracy and Control attributes.
  • Fix for the shot shaping preference bonus being incorrectly applied for swing paths outside of the mishit window. Now when you are hitting shots with your golfer’s preferred shot shape, swings outside of the mishit window will be much more forgiving, as originally intended.
  • Fixed an issue with the pre-shot camera where it would stay pointed towards the golfer instead of reorienting to the target if you were aimed in the opposite direction of the target before pressing “Reset Shot”.
  • Fixed an exploit where some players on PC were still able to use keyboard input to control the Analog Swing Mechanic.
  • Fix for the orange circle effect shown for obstructed shots remaining visible for an additional second when the shot is no longer blocked after changing club or shot type.
  • Fixed matchmaking join timer not being properly synced. This was causing some players who joined late into a lobby being left behind and returned to the main menu instead of transitioning into gameplay. This issue was most noticeable in Online Stroke Play, but also affected Online Foursomes.
  • Fix for seeing a ball floating in midair while remote golfers are dropping their ball after hitting into a hazard in Online Stroke Play matches.
  • Fix for some players not being shown the full screen leaderboard that is shown during the round completion cutscene in online stroke play matches.
  • Fix for needing to accept an invite twice in order to be transitioned to a private match if a player accepts an invite during gameplay.
  • Fixed the hole number not being displayed on the leaderboard shown between holes.
  • Fixed the Longest Putt stat, so that it updates correctly after each tournament concludes.
  • Updated the Augusta National Women's Amateur trophy sequence to include characters wearing green jackets.
  • Fix for some of the club heads being invisible during the Masters Honorary Starters cut scenes when playing in Performance Mode.
  • Fixed an exploit where players were able to enter a different tournament than selected by pressing up or down immediately after entering a new tournament.
  • Fixed a rare softlock that could occur when loading into gameplay in challenges with AI golfers.
  • Players were not able to complete challenge objectives on November 8th from approximately 9:00pm - 11:00pm UTC due to a server issue.
  • Players were not able to complete quest objectives on November 8th from approximately 9:00pm - 11:00pm UTC due to a server issue.
  • Fixed an issue that allowed players to claim duplicate Season 7 Pro Pass rewards. The issue occurred on October 24th and the fix was applied to servers shortly after.
  • Additional improvements to ensure that the game functions normally when no Pro Pass is active.
  • [Bay Hill] Reprimanded and corrected camera operators in the towers on hole hole 9 who were not filming their green.
  • [St Andrews] Updated physics to increase resistance of rough and heavy rough and also increase the lie penalty of heavy rough.
  • [The Country Club] Fixed crowd sometimes obstructing the low camera view on the hole 14 tee box.
  • [The Country Club] Fixed a missing hit box on the large rock on the right side of hole 10.
  • Fixed color being too dark on a number of Nike polos.
  • Fixed clipping around the armpits on the male Nike Dri-FIT Polos.
  • Fixed clipping around the neck and wrists on the female long-sleeve Nike Dri-FIT Polos.
  • Fixed caddie bib being black instead of the correct color for the event.
  • Fixed clipping in a number of pants visible when previewing in the outfits screen.
  • Fixed clipping in shoulder and waistband when wearing Skeleton Quarter Zip.
  • Reduced size of the “P” on Puma Snapback Cap.
  • Fixed Scottie Scheffler's belt so that the end is now tucked into the last belt loop.
  • Fix for briefly seeing a pink hat on Ian Poulter if he was quickly scrolled to in the golfer select screen.
  • [Challenges] Updated the camera angle that is used when previewing Challenge rewards.
  • [Equipment] Fix for club heads slowly transitioning from low to high resolution models when scrolling through the equipment screen.
  • [Gameplay] Fixed “Reading Putt…” indicator not being displayed for secondary players in local multiplayer.
  • [Gameplay] Fixed the shot result widget overlapping with the bottom third scorecard, which was most noticeable if a player reached the stroke limit while putting.
  • [Main Menu] Sound effect no longer plays if the player presses the Y/Triangle button in the main menu while a booster banner is displayed, since the action is non-functional.
  • [Main Menu] Updated text on the booster banner title from “...left" to “...Remaining".
  • [Main Menu] Fix for seeing the wrong trophy icon when reconnecting to servers after disconnecting in gameplay.
  • [Online] Fixed Online Foursomes lobby incorrectly indicating that matchmaking stopped for all players after one player left the lobby during matchmaking.
  • [Private Match] Fixed Private Match background not updating if a player accepts an invite while in Career mode.
  • [Quests] Fixed “Item collected” ribbon not being displayed for the first item when previewing rewards that have already been earned.
  • [Settings] Removed the “Low” option from the “Crowd Quality” pc-specific visual setting since it was non-functional.
  • [Store] Fix for putter grips incorrectly showing  a description that indicates that it can’t be equipped when attempting to equip grip to a putter after purchasing.
  • [Store] Fix for the "Insufficient Funds" pop-up no longer being displayed after it is dismissed once.
  • [Tooltips] Fixed positioning of the wind and elevation tooltips in gameplay.
  • [Tooltips] Fixed positioning of tooltips in Tournaments mode.
  • [Tooltips] Fixed tooltips for Quick Play and Private Match which were being shown on the course select screen instead of the mode select screen.
  • Update PGA of America logo to latest version.
  • Update equipment and outfits screens to better support large inventories.
  • Fix for a softlock that could occur if a player accepts an invite when the game is closed and there is a new dynamic message displayed that they haven’t previously seen.
  • Fix for a softlock that could occur if a player accepts an invite while in Quick Play and then backs out of the lobby to the main menu.
  • Additional crash and stability-related fixes.
