Whitsundays Day Tour – The Best Whitsunday Islands Tours From Airlie Beach

Posted on Last updated: December 9, 2020

Found in the very heart of the iconic Great Barrier Reef, off the coast of Eastern Australia, lies a group of 74 tropical paradisal isles that make up the Whitsundays Islands.

The islands boast sweeping expanses of lush rainforests, glistening beaches, and jewel-coloured waters sheltering the colourful, life-filled reefs.

The Whitsundays are a ‘must-see’ on everyone’s Australia bucket list . The Whitsundays Islands is where the delights of the Great Barrier Reef and multifarious lifestyles, from resorts and hotels, all meet.

When I first saw photos of the Whitsundays I knew I had to add them to my ultimate travel bucket list . Most travellers choose to visit the Whitsundays on a day trip from mainland Australia.

If you’re among them, you’ve come to the right place!

In this guide I’ve outlined everything you need to know about doing a day tour to the Whitsundays, including departure points, prices, what to expect, and even alternative tours.

So what are you waiting for? The crystal clear waters of the Whitsundays are waiting, let’s dive in!

About the Whitsundays

Whitsundays forms part of the Cumberland Group of islands – the largest offshore chain of islands along the Australian coastline in the Coral Sea.

The majority of these isles are uninhabited (only eight are inhabited) and form part of the national parks . Several of the islands offer resort accommodation.

Airlie Beach is the main town on the mainland that is used as an entry point to the islands. Other big cities closeby include Cairns, 630km north, and Townsville, around 900km north of Brisbane.

The region provides a warm subtropical climate, with average temperatures around 27.4°C.

It has a well-defined dry season during winter (June – August), with average temperatures reaching 24°C, making it the perfect beachside holiday destination year-round.

The Whitsundays Islands are home to the world-renowned Hill Inlet and Whitehaven Beach ( rated the second-best beach in the world ). The perfect place to relax on the pristine beaches or stroll through the lush rainforests.

How to get to the Whitsundays from Airlie Beach

The Whitsundays Islands aren’t connected to the mainland. So unless you fly to Hamilton Island, you’ll need to take a ferry regardless of which mode of transportation you take along the mainland.

The easiest way to get to the Whitsunday Islands is by plane . The largest inhabited island, Hamilton Island, is serviced by its own airport, The Great Barrier Reef Airport.

It has direct flights from Melbourne, Cairns , Sydney and Brisbane. Another airport servicing the Whitsundays is Whitsunday Coast Airport, at Proserpine, 20km from Airlie Beach.

There are also two other light plane airports, Whitsunday Airport at the Shute harbour just 5km from Airlie Beach and an airport on Lindeman Island.

Lindeman Island has domestic and international connections via Sydney , Cairns, and Brisbane airports.

The majority of ferries travel between Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island, though some also run from Shute Harbour, 10km east. The crossing takes around an hour.

Keep in mind, these are passenger-only ferries, so if you are driving by car , you’ll need to leave it at the ‘long-stay’ parking lot. However, many travellers choose to stay in Airlie Beach and take a Whitsundays day trip.

Most people drive to Airlie Beach as part of a longer Australia East Coast road trip . Whether you go from Cairns to Brisbane or viceversa, you’re guaranteed an epic Aussie road trip !

With an organised tour

If you prefer to have everything organised, you can also visit the Whitsunday Islands with an organised tour.

These usually set off from Airlie Beach, take you to explore the islands and then return either the same day or the following day, depending on what tour you choose.

These are great if you’re travelling on a tight schedule, or don’t want to have to organise an overnight stay at the resorts of Hamilton Island.

Our experience doing an Airlie Beach Tours to Whitsundays

We only did a day trip to the Whitsundays since we had a tight itinerary, and didn’t have time to spend longer at the islands.

If you’re up for an adventure, embark on a thrilling Whitsundays ocean rafting tour from Airlie Beach.

The duration of the tour is around 6.5 hours to a full day. You have two options to choose from with this trip – the North or the South Whitehaven option.

We opted for the Airlie Beach day trip to the North Whitehaven side and visited two different snorkelling stops. First on Hook Island and then to Whitehaven Beach.

It’s the perfect option for anyone looking to do a lot of snorkelling. It’s an amazing tour, but you won’t be spending much time on the actual islands with this choice.

We enjoyed lunch at the north end of Whitehaven beach, and then took a guided walk through the National Park and the Hill Inlet lookout point.

Snorkelling in the Whitsunday Islands with a Maori Wrasse

Snorkelling in the Whitsunday Islands with a Maori Wrasse

There you’ll see breathtaking views of blue and white strips, where the turquoise waters, reefs and sands meet. This was a really phenomenal day trip, and I wish we had stayed longer and explored a bit more of the islands.

The second option is the South Whitehaven tour and is ideal if you’re looking to do more relaxing on the beach.

You’ll explore one snorkel destination at Border or Dumbell Islands, and visit both the northern and southern ends of the pristine Whitehaven Beach.

You’ll get to relax on the world-renowned white silica sands or frolic in the waters for around 2-hours. Doing a day trip on a speed boat is ideal since the travel time is usually reduced.

Big sailing boats or catamarans are comfier to cruise on, but will take much longer to reach the islands. We also had a bit of an adventurous captain who did some speed tricks out at sea, which were pretty exhilarating!

The islands were so stunning that I wish we had been able to spend longer there. However as far as day trips go, the one we did was pretty awesome.

What to Bring on Your Whitsundays Island Day Tour

Although we all know how to pack for exciting tours, here are some of the general trip essentials and must-haves for a Whitsundays day tour.

Sunscreen – is your absolute trusty steed if you’re travelling in Australia. You’ll want to get a lotion that will protect you from the sun and to also be reef friendly.

Sun hat – it’s always good to have a sun hat when spending a day at the beach. The Australian sun can be really harsh, so having some shade to protect your face is essential.

Flip flops – you’ll want a pair of light shoes/flops to easily pack into your bag for exploring the shores.

Light waterproof jacket – is an essential item I like to take along with me, wherever I go. Although Whitsundays provides a subtropical climate, you may find it getting chilly if it rains or in the late afternoons. Taking a light waterproof jacket doesn’t need much space, and it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Reusable water bottle – not only provides you with water, but you also help conserve the environment when on tours. Most tour operators provide water and snacks, but it is always great to keep your own reusable water bottle at hand.

Fast-drying towel – is perfect for all purposes – camping, travel, beach, backpacking, swimming. It’s lightweight, absorbent and dries quickly. It’s certainly a popular travel accessory and one of my ‘must-have’ items.

Is doing a Whitsunday day Tour worth it?

To put it shortly, absolutely! With a subtropical climate and stunning tropical islands, you’ll certainly want to take a visit and see the paradise for yourself.

And if you take a ferry, it’s a short 1h 5m to get there, which is not bad at all.

You can explore these idyllic islands by snorkelling, scuba diving, sailing and swimming from the many beaches or the tour boat.

The day tour we took in Whitsundays is ideal if you want to do more snorkelling. It’s a lovely day trip, but you’ll spend a lot of time at sea and not actually on the islands.

More Whitsundays Tours Options

The Whitsundays day tour is a spectacular excursion, but for the next time, I will certainly opt for the overnight option to explore the surrounding areas more.

If you have more time, I’d suggest doing an overnight tour around the Whitsunday Islands. You’ll get the most out of your trip sailing, snorkelling, hiking and kayaking in these magical gem clear waters.

Not only that, but you’ll also get to embark on an eco-friendly exploration of hidden bays hugging around the reefs.

You’ll also get to visit the famous Whitehaven Beach, the Hill Inlet, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, and other Whitsundays Islands.

Chilling at the beach

Another excellent option is the 2-day combo tour to the outer Great Barrier Reef and some of the best locations in the Whitsundays.

Your first day is a 10-hour trip to explore the outer Great Barrier Reef on a cruise and pontoon, passing by Whitsunday islands. There you’re able to snorkel and enjoy a buffet lunch in paradise.

On your second day, you’ll embark on a 10-hour Catamaran Sailing tour to Whitehaven, the Hill Inlet and enjoy snorkelling in the crystal clear waters.

Rare World War II planes soar over Syracuse, rides and tours available this weekend

Some of the rarest planes from World War II will be on display through the weekend at Syracuse’s Hancock International Airport.

The planes include the B-29 Superfortress and a P-51 Mustang. They, along with several other historic planes, will bring history to life as they take to the skies above Syracuse.

The AirPower History Tour brings the sights, sounds, and stories of World War II aviation to airports across North America each year. Visitors to the ramp will be able to purchase rides and tour the B-29’s cockpit when the aircraft is not flying.

Tour Leader Jacque Robitaille says the B-29 Superfortress named “Fifi” is one of only two B-29s still flying in the world today.

"We have a lot of folks that come out now and say that was my father or my grandfather that flew in these airplanes. It gives them a chance to see up close the hardships they went through and an appreciation for the sacrifices they made."

ABOUT THE B-29 SUPERFORTRESS “FIFI”

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress, the largest and most technically advanced aircraft of its time, was first flown in 1942. It began active service in the US Army Air Corp in 1944, and is best known as the aircraft whose missions over Japan helped bring an end to World War II. The B-29 also was used in the Korean War in the early 1950s and was a staple of the U.S. Air Force until 1960. “FIFI”, one of only two B-29s in the world still flying, was acquired by the CAF in 1971. She began touring in 1974 and has been entertaining air show audiences across the country ever since.

B-24s in the world still flying provide the opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of our fathers and grandfathers in the dangerous air wars over Europe, the Pacific, North Africa and Asia.

ABOUT THE P-51 MUSTANG

The North American P-51D Mustang is one of the most recognizable and loved aircraft in aviation history. With its speed, range, and sleek lines, the P-51 became a favorite of Allied fighter pilots and bomber crews. The long-range fighter aircraft had a range of 1,300 miles that enabled it to accompany the bombers to their targets and back, and it was faster and more maneuverable than its German and Japanese opponents.

ABOUT THE T-6 TEXAN

The North American T-6 Texan, known as the "Pilotmaker," was an advanced flight trainer that introduced new pilots to a complex aircraft with more speed of over 200-plus miles per hour, to prepare them for the warbirds they would fly in combat in WWII. The T-6 was designed for an instructor and student and had a closed cockpit.

ABOUT THE PT-13 STEARMAN

The Boeing PT-13 was the primary flight trainer for all branches of the military during World War II. This iconic bi-plane, almost universally known as the "Stearman”, trained more crews than any other aircraft in WWII. A ride in this open cockpit airplane brings back the wind-in-your-hair feeling of the early days of flying.

The AirPower History Tour is in Syracuse until Sunday. Tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for kids ages 11-17. Children 10 and under are free. Parking is $10 with all proceeds going to support the Syracuse Airport Military Courtesy Room Cockpit tours of the B-29 will be available each day beginning at 9 a.m., and on Saturday and Sunday when the aircraft are done flying. Rides may be booked in advance at AirPowerTour.org.

Important Information:

The exact departure/arrival time is not guaranteed as departure times and itineraries may be altered closer to departure to suit tides, weather and other aircraft movements. Please allow flexibility and space in your daily itinerary.

Courtesy bus pick-ups begin 1 hour (approx.) prior to departure, and must be reconfirmed 24 hours prior to departure. Passengers who fail to reconfirm these details, or miss the courtesy bus, will be liable to find their own means of transport to Whitsunday Coast Airport. Self-drive guests must be ready at the departure point at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled flight time.

Weight Restrictions Apply:

  • 115kgs per person on the 6 seat aircraft
  • 130kgs per person on the 10 seat aircraft

Aircrafts are subject to availability. The supplier reserves the right to exchange the aircrafts without any given notice.

Your Responsibilities:

Please advise us before booking if any passengers are under 18 years old to ensure this is the appropriate trip.

You must reconfirm all booked tours prior to travel as specified on your voucher. If applicable, notes such as dietary requirements, pick-up locations and additional fees should also be confirmed at this time. Reconfirmations cannot be actioned through Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel, and must be done so directly through the Service Operator as specified on each ticket.

It is your responsibility to notify us of ticket discrepancies. Please read through the details on your voucher thoroughly to ensure all details such as passenger names, ages and dates of travel on vouchers are correct.

It is the responsibility of all passengers travelling to advise both your travel agent at the time of booking and vessel check-in agent before boarding of any medical conditions including food allergies you may suffer from.

You need to allow adequate time to check-in prior to the specified departure time.

Prices/Extra Costs:

All prices are stated in Australian dollars and include GST. Surcharges over peak holiday seasons may apply.

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices and extra costs. Extra costs may include EMC fees, Stingersuit/Wetsuit Hire, Luggage Storage, Insurance, Linen Hire, National Park Fees, Fuel Levies, Dietary Fees, etc. Bonds may also apply.

We will also endeavour to communicate these extra costs with you at the time of booking, and on your ticket. However, it is your responsibility to confirm which (if any) additional costs apply with each Service Operator upon reconfirming your trip.

Travel Risk/Insurance:

It should be noted that adventure travel involves risk. Whilst we make every effort to safeguard clients, we cannot be responsible for personal injury or loss due to the actions of our clients which are beyond our control. We highly recommend that all clients have travel insurance covering illness, injury, loss or damage to personal belongings and not being able to travel on the confirmed date of departure. You should also ensure your travel insurance will cover special circumstances including weather events preventing guests from travelling to their tour departure destination and cancelled flights due to unforeseen circumstances.

The Service Operator reserves the right to limit courtesy transfers to select local accommodations. Private residences or Airbnb properties may be asked to meet at the closest confirmed location. Failure to meet at the specified pick-up location may be treated as “No Show”, for which the Client Cancellation Policy applies.

Merchant Fees:

Please be aware operators pass on credit card merchant fees so there is a non-refundable 1% surcharge for VISA and MASTERCARD card purchases.

Other:

Terms and Conditions (including the Cancellation Policy) are subject to change. The most recent versions can be found online on the relevant product pages.

All ticket/voucher reissues attract a $20 administration fee.

Open Date Vouchers / Gift Certificate:

Shipping Costs are in addition to the ticket price and will be added at check-out. Shipping costs are non-refundable and do not makeup part of the ticket value.

E-Vouchers incur no shipping fees. You have 5 years to use the value of the voucher. Seasonal Price Rises will apply if travelling out the current seasons pricing. Vouchers can be exchanged for free up to the full value of the voucher excluding credit card fees and charges.

Cancellations

Client Cancellations:

All cancellations forfeit 25% of the recommended retail price (RRP) - not the discounted/sale price. No shows or client cancellations made within 72 hours of departure forfeit 100% of the total ticket price.

Transfers between tours can be made at the suppliers discretion, however, it should be noted that supplier fees may apply. Tour transfers also incur a $20 administration fee.

It is compulsory that all cancellation requests are in writing and sent via email to [email protected]. Cancellations attempted via online chat or phone will not be actioned.

Supplier Cancellations:

The Service Operator reserves the right to alter prices, alter itineraries, apply a fuel surcharge, cancel departures, arrange alternative transport and vary itineraries and services if necessary.

All departures and itineraries are subject to weather. Tours may be changed or cancelled for any reason at the discretion of the Service Operator. If the Service Operator has to cancel the trip or activity (prior to departure) and we cannot offer a suitable alternative, then a refund will be given minus a 20% administration fee and any associated card fees. We strongly recommend that you have travel insurance, especially during the wet season.

In the unlikely event of your trip being cancelled or stood down, all guest communication is required to go through our Online Store via telephone or email. While there is a Sailing Whitsundays retail outlet located Airlie Beach, please be aware that they operate as a separate entity and are unable to access reservations made by the Mr Travel online department.

All refunds are in Australian Dollars and must be made to the card of payment. Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel is not liable for exchange rate fluctuations or fees, or any other merchant/bank fees associated with domestic and/or international transactions.

Where a full refund is applicable, there is the option to transfer the whole cost of the tour to another tour or “Credit” to avoid the administration fee. A transfer fee of $20 will apply.

You will be emailed confirmation once the refund has been processed. Once the refund has been processed, it may still take time for the banks to clear the amount. Please allow 7-10 business days for the funds to clear into Australian accounts and up to 21 business days for international accounts.

Accountability/Misconduct:

All Service Operators have the right to provide client feedback and to cancel bookings based off of feedback from other Service Operators.

Please enjoy your travel experience in a kind and responsible manner.

Sailing Whitsundays/Mr Travel will treat this as any normal client cancellation and therefore the cancellation fees stated in the Client Cancellation Policy will apply.

Thank you for booking with our East-Coast travel experts here at Mr Travel/Sailing Whitsundays.  If you would like any further advice, assistance in arranging accommodation, transfers or additional tours please get in touch.
