Dodge Journey horn not working – causes and how to fix it
The horn is an important safety feature in your Dodge Journey. Driving your vehicle with a broken horn can be dangerous for you and others on the road. If the horn does not honk in your Journey when you press the button on the steering wheel, it can have various causes. What these are and what you can do about it, we explain in this article.
Some of the common causes that stops the horn from working normally on your Dodge Journey are blown fuse, bad relay, faulty horn, corroded or worn out connector, broken wire, broken clock spring or bad horn button.
1. Blown fuse
The horn on Dodge Journey needs electricity to work. In case of a faulty fuse, the circuit is interrupted and the horn can not work.
Check your Journey’s owners manual or the fuse box cover to find the exact location of the fuse for the horn. If the fuse is blown, replace it with a new one with the specified amp rating.
To check the fuse, pull it out of Journey’s fuse box using a fuse puller or needle nose plier and hold it against the light. If the metal strip is broken in the middle, the fuse has blown. You must replace it with one of the same amperage and therefore the same color. It does not matter in which direction you insert the fuse.
2. Bad relay
Relays are electromagnetic switches that are used to switch electrical loads on and off. A bad relay can also be the cause of horn failure on your Dodge Journey.
First of all, you should find out where the horn relay is located in your particular model of Journey. The information may be listed in your vehicle’s owners manual. Typically relays are located in the engine compartment or under the steering wheel on the left-hand side. If you are lucky, the wiring diagram will be drawn on the facing. Before starting the replacement, you must always disconnect the vehicle’s battery.
As soon as you have identified the relay for the horn, you should check whether there is an identical relay in the box, typically you can use AC relay to test the horn relay. With this you can easily test whether the electromagnetic switch is actually the cause of the malfunctioning horn on your Journey. Most relays are plugged in, but they can still be relatively tight. Be careful not to damage anything when removing the relays. Remember: The battery should be reconnected after replacing the relay – otherwise no current will flow.
3. Bad horn
A broken horn could be the reason why you can no longer honk on your Dodge Journey. Horns rarely break down, they can last decades and can even outlive the life of the vehicle. Still, it can fail depending on how often you use it. In particular, if the horn is working but sounds off, it’s because one of the horns has worn out.
You can test the horn on your Journey by checking the voltage at the connector or with a test light.
4. Broken wire or bad connector
The horn sits at the front of your Dodge Journey where grime and other small particles can build up over time. This can lead to corrosion on the connector resulting in poor conductivity. You don’t necessarily have to replace the corroded connector, in most cases the connector can be cleaned with WD-40. For safety reasons, make sure the battery is disconnected when cleaning the connector, and the connector is fully dry before you plug it back in.
If you don’t see any corrosion on the connector of your Journey, then its time to perform the voltage test with a multimeter, or you can also use a test light. Turn on the multimeter and insert the probes into the connector, one at each point making sure the metal part of probes don’t touch each other – otherwise it will short out and blow up the fuse, and may cause damage to the vehicle’s electrical system. After inserting the probes, ask a friend to press the horn button in the vehicle. The multimeter should read 12+ volts, if it reads 0 volts then it indicates conductivity failure in the horn system: a broken wire, bad connector, broken clock spring or faulty switch can be the cause other than blown fuse or bad relay.
Rodent Damage: If bite marks or the like are discovered, there is a high probability that a rodent has let off steam in the engine compartment of your Journey. Then it is important to carefully examine all other cables and hoses for damage, including electrical wires for the horn.
5. Broken clockspring
The spiral cable or clockspring is a spiral-wound special rotary electrical connector in your Dodge Journey which allows the steering wheel to turn while still making an electrical connection between the buttons on the steering wheel, including horn button, and the vehicle’s electrical systems. The clockspring is located between the steering wheel and the steering column. The clockspring contains delicate wires that can get damaged during servicing or due to overuse if the vehicle has put on too many miles.
If the clockspring is damaged in your Journey, you may see other system malfunctions as well. For example, the airbag warning light may illuminate in the instrument cluster, or other buttons on the steering wheel may stop working. But in rare cases, it is possible that only horn wire in the spiral gets damaged.
It is not feasible to repair a damaged clockspring. They are relatively inexpensive and once found defective should be replaced with a new one.
6. Faulty horn button switch
Another reason for non-functioning horn can be failure of horn button in the steering wheel of your Dodge Journey. Over time, depending on how frequently the horn has been used, the button may eventually wear out and cease to function.
There are many reasons why the horn may not be working in your Dodge Journey. When looking for the reason, you should always start with the most obvious cause, blown fuse or faulty relay.
In any case, it is advisable for laypersons to visit a workshop as you can easily do more damage to your vehicle, especially to the electrical system. An expert mechanic can diagnose the issue while you sip coffee in the waiting area.

We bought a 2010 Journey SXT apx 1.5 yrs ago. It has started the random honking or alarm sounding on it's own as I have seen described by multiple other people. What I am failing to see is any actual posts stating that there is a FIX. With all pun intended, before I started my repair "journey" I wanted to do my research to see exactly what might cause such a thing.
Basically, I see that there is NO recall regarding the issue of the random horn blowing or alarm sounding (I really don't know if it is my horn or alarm that is an issue) whether the car is driving, parked, on or off.
I see that people have gone to dealerships and had the following done with apparently no success:
A) "SYSTEM UPDATE" - no fix (related to TIPM??)
B) Replace clockspring - no fix
C) TIPM reset/replace - not clear on this but I do see that the Journey is removed from a class action regarding the TIPM failure
After reading what some other Journey owners have gone through with the same horn or alarm issue, only then to read on and find out that they have also had the vehicle just shut off randomly, battery drain, etc... I feel almost "lucky" that mine, at least so far, has been isolated to just the horn. As of right this minute my husband has taken 2 fuses out as a temporary solution. This, when living in HOUSTON, is NOT an acceptable long term fix.
So my question is this... Has anyone actually had this very issue and had it completely resolved? If so, HOW? I find it almost impossible to believe that after 6 years and with so many posts regarding this very thing that nothing is a permanent fix. Every post seems to be the same. Went to dealership/mechanic, had ##### done, horn started honking again 2 days later. Went back to dealership/mechanic, had **** done.... Etc. I, like most other people out there, simply can not afford to continue to "troubleshoot" at a dealership or mechanic at anywhere from $200-$1500 per trip. I also have a Cadillac with a trans issue right now. (Maybe I should just take the bus!)
Any direction from you guys will be so greatly appreciated. Knowing what to expect and how to save $ to get this fixed is what is important, as I truly have to have a functioning horn. They can't hear my middle finger! Ugh.
*** Also read in the do's and don'ts forum help about taking a VIDEO of the issue. Has anyone had any success with video on this particular issue as ours seems to be so random, but I would love to send Chrysler a loop of the video and find out if they would like to be our "neighbor".

When you say alarm, what do you mean? Do you have a remote start? Is the alarm part of the remote start? If so, is it OEM or aftermarket? If this is the case, I would disable the remote start and see what happens.
A bad TIPM: wipers start/stop by themselves/dash lights on/off by themselves/radio on/off by itself. With only horn/alarm, it has to be the remote start if you have it.

Well, I know it's typically bad form to necropost, but I was searching for threads relative to my issue and found this old post by my wife! (hello dear!)
To answer your question, dhh3; yes we have remote start, but the issue has progressed well beyond the horn blowing issue. Approximately a year ago, the horn relay issue got so bad that the battery was being totally drained if the car was not being driven daily. After replacing the battery once , I purchased a trickle charger to hook it up to if I had a couple days off and no plans for distance driving. Several months ago I began noticing random dash lights being on while the car was parked, most often the digital ram symbol but others as well. Then I saw one of the taillights would be on while parked, for several days in a row. At this point I haven't driven the car in several months and really need to figure out the best/most inexpensive way to repair this. Preferably myself.
Searches for after market tipm replacements have not been successful and I'm weary of purchasing one from a salvage yard. Are refurbished units available, and if so where?
my daughter had a jeep that started doing this and we just unhooked the horn after we couldn't find the fix then later on the wipers coming on and off weather the jeep was running or not and other random things we ended up trading it in on a 2011 journey for me and i paid her what they gave for her jeep. later on i read somewhere that it might be from the main fuse block under the hood shorting out. so good luck .....
tjboston5676
last week my 2010 started randomly honking, sometimes a short chirp sometimes a long honk for a few seconds. It was completely random. My guess is something to do with the heat and something under the hood is expanding and shorting out somewhere. I haven't had time to get into it yet so i just pulled the fuse. Haven't tried to put fuse back in yet.

Dodge Journey Horn Not Working: 5 Most Common Causes
A functioning horn is one of a vehicle’s most critical safety features. If your Dodge Journey’s horn isn’t working, there are a few potential causes. We’ll cover each of them, starting with the easiest and most likely issues and working from there. A test light can make diagnosing a horn that isn’t working much easier.
The horn is typically located behind the front grill on the Dodge Journey and is usually pretty easy to change if necessary.
1. Fuse Blown
A blown fuse is often the reason why your Journey’s horn stops working and should be the first thing you check (unless the airbag light is on ). If it is, go down to section 3.
Your Journey’s horn fuse could be located in the engine compartment or under the dash. A sticker inside the fuse box should tell what each fuse does on the backside of its door. You can also check your vehicle’s manual for a schematic of the fuse locations.
Testing the Fuse
It’s easy to test your Journey’s horn fuse. If you have access to a test light, you don’t need to pull the fuse at all.
Clamp the test light onto a good ground source (metal that’s not painted that bolts to the body, chassis, engine block, or negative battery terminal).
Once your test light is grounded, test the Journey’s horn fuse by touching both electrical contacts. If only one of them is hot, then the fuse has failed. If they both light up the test light, the fuse is OK.
You can pull the fuse and look at the element that connects the two fuse blades. If it’s broken, the fuse is blown. You’ll need to determine what caused the horn fuse to fail in the first place. Otherwise your Journey’s horn will stop working again.
2. Horn Wiring Harness
Take a look at the horn’s wiring harness. It’s another quick thing you can check when your Dodge Journey has a broken horn. It’ll be tucked in behind the grill.
Is it connected to the horn all the way? Follow it and look for any burned, damaged, or scarred wiring. Repair as needed and see if the horn works.
3. Broken Clock Spring
A clock spring allows the steering wheel to rotate without turning the wiring harness inside the steering wheel.
On a modern vehicle like the Dodge Journey, the clock spring supports a minimum of two systems (the airbag and the horn). If your vehicle has steering wheel controls, the inputs for those go through the clockspring as well.
Testing the Clock Spring
There are two ways to test your Journey’s clock spring. You can turn the wheel back and forth and observe what happens, or you can use an OBD II scanner (if the airbag light is on).
Turn the Wheel
Push the horn button and turn the steering wheel while you continuously press the horn. If the horn works at different angles or the airbag light goes on and off, that indicates that the clock spring has gone bad.
Use a Code Reader
It’s highly likely that your Dodge Journey’s airbag light will also be on when the clock spring is bad. You can use an OBDII code reader to determine what is causing it to come on. It should confirm that the clock spring has failed.
4. Faulty Horn Relay
The horn button sends power through the clock spring, down the harness, and to the horn relay. The horn relay will be located under your Journey’s hood in the relay box. It might be under the dash (not usually the case). The video below shows how to test the horn relay.
5. Horn Failure
It’s quite possible that your Dodge Journey’s horn has failed. It has likely failed if it has a solid ground connection and power at the harness connection. You can test it using a jump wire from the battery straight into the power. Check out the video above for a quick way of trying it.

2010 Dodge Journey horn problem
- Add to quote
I've been having a problem with my horn going off on my vehicle and have been trying to figure out what to do. Here is my advice for everyone that is having this problem. Call 800 992 1997 and file a complaint with Chrysler. I spoke to a women named Elizabeth and she said there hasn't been any complaints filed for this issue. The more people we get to call and complain, hopefully they will recall it. Have your vin number and mileage available when you call. Good luck.
Hi artist2251, Sorry to hear about the concerns you're experiencing with your vehicle! There is a STAR case S1508000292 related to this concern that your dealership can access for more information. If your vehicle is still at the dealership or if you make another appointment I'd be happy to follow up with them for you if needed, just PM our page with your VIN and let me know. This video shows how to replace blown fuses in the interior 2010 Dodge Journey fuse box of your in addition to the fuse panel diagram location. Electrical components such as your map light, radio, heated seats, high beams, power windows, headlights, fan blower, defroster, door lock, power seat, windshield wiper motor, fuel pump, horn, anti-lock brakes and rear view camera all have fuses and if they suddenly stop working, chances are you have a fuse that has blown out. If your Journey is experiencing electrical problems, you should always check the fuses first, because they are relatively easy to check and cheap to change. Some Dodges have multiple interior fuse boxes including in the trunk - the video will show you where the interior fuse box of your 2010 Journey is located. Next you need to consult the 2010 Dodge Journey fuse box diagram to locate the blown fuse. If your Journey has many options like a sunroof, navigation, heated seats, etc, the more fuses it has. Some components may have multiple fuses, so make sure you check all of the fuses that are linked to the component in question.
If you need to replace a blown fuse in your Journey, make sure you replace it with one that has the same amperage as the blown fuse. If checking and replacing the fuse for the component in question doesn’t work, we recommend seeking assistance from a trusted professional mechanic. They should be able to figure out if the component needs to be replaced or if there is a short or some other problem with your Journey.
