Turning 20: Adventure WV guides WVU students toward meaningful relationships, pride in West Virginia

For almost 20 years now, Adventure WV has been an important part of the student experience at West Virginia University , introducing thousands of students to the Mountain State’s outdoor opportunities while helping them make friends and learn new skills.

Heading into the anniversary year, one of the longest-running Adventure WV success stories is the First-Year Trips program, which was created as a peer-led, outdoor-based effort to help incoming first-year students become familiar with their new home in West Virginia by visiting some of the state’s most popular places.

“We want to create a tight-knit community for incoming students even before they set foot on campus,” said Morgan Haas, associate director with Adventure WV, who oversees the First-Year Trips program. “This helps them transition to college smoothly by assisting them in getting to know each other, including their peers and leaders, and by introducing them to the resources available on campus. One of our goals is to foster an early connection between students, WVU and the state.”

Greg Corio , assistant vice president for Outdoor Youth Advocacy and Initiatives with the WVU Brad and Alys Smith Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative , started the First-Year Trips program during the 2003-2004 academic year as his graduate project, a program housed in the WVU Division of Student Life that has blossomed into one of the largest student-centric outdoor programs in the country.

“The First-Year Trips come at a transition point when students are not high school students and they are not college students, where they’re hungry to learn in school but they’re also a little nervous,” Corio said. “This is their first college experience — their first college experience with a lot of support in an environment they’re usually not super comfortable in with classmates they’ve never met being led by upperclassmen.”

Corio, a WVU alumnus, formed the idea of a freshmen outdoor orientation after seeing other universities do outdoor trips like those available in West Virginia. As a graduate student, he approached then President David C. Hardesty Jr. with a proposal for an outdoor orientation program with the potential to improve retention and graduation rates.

“President Hardesty said, ‘I've been waiting on a program like this for a long time,’” Corio recalled.

Student retention has increased by 7.3% and six-year graduation rates by 9.5% because of the program, according to institutional research.

After an initial launch, Corio connected First-Year Trips with the Freshmen Seminar in 2004 and the program began to expand quickly. Students participated in five Explore trips, showcasing some of West Virginia’s scenic landscapes, and one Habitat for Humanity trip.

“We had no idea if that first Habitat trip was going to work, but in the end, it did and those students became a family, and we knew we were on to something special,” Corio said.

Included in that 2004 trip was Carie Behe, a two-time University graduate who is now the senior global brand manager at Cotopaxi, a company that creates sustainably made outdoor gear.

Her First-Year Trip, one she came into with no outdoor experience, set her on the path to not only a professional career in the outdoors industry, but also toward building a love for the outdoors and traveling in her personal life.

“It utterly changed the course of my life. The person I am today is because I was a participant of Adventure WV and it has such invaluable meaning,” Behe said. “It’s hard to put into words what it means to me because it changed my life so significantly. Every facet of who I am as a person and where I’ve ended up 20 years later is because of this one program.”

Behe’s trip included stops at Coopers Rock, Blackwater Falls, Seneca Rocks and Spruce Knob, and concluded with whitewater rafting on the New River near Fayetteville.

A few years later, Behe returned to the program as a student leader, and has since been all over the world, exploring natural wonders. “I never could have accomplished any of these things if I wouldn’t have gone through Adventure,” she said.

Most participants are incoming freshmen, but transfer students can also sign up along with nontraditional students, such as Veterans.

“We want everyone to come on our trips because we believe it is a transformational experience,” Haas said. “We want these students to persist through their time here at WVU and we genuinely believe finding a sense of community, mentorship and overcoming obstacles together can support that.”

Branching out from the First-Year Trips concept are other programs within Adventure WV with a similar format, but for different demographics. The Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation Program allows upcoming sophomores to reflect on their first year at WVU, prepare for a future at the University and explore other parts of the country, such as the desert Southwest.

The Adventure WV model also led to creation of both the WVU Science Adventure School and the Ascend WV program.

“You bring a new group of people together who have a shared experience in the outdoors, and you help create a sense of community and belonging as well as help them fall in love with the beauty of West Virginia. It works with sixth graders as well as remote workers,” Corio said.

“All of these tell a story about the impact Adventure WV has had during the past two decades.”

19 Surprisingly Cool Things to Do in West Virginia

T he state that inspired John Denver's now-classic American anthem, does, in fact, feel a bit like Heaven (or at least what we imagine it to be). Yet it isn't a destination at top of many bucket lists, if it even has a place on those lists at all. It's time to change your mind.

Read on to discover the top things to do in West Virginia.

New River Gorge National Park and Preserve: Glen Jean

If there's only one place you can visit in West Virginia, let it be New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Born out of a COVID-19 relief bill, New River Gorge became the nation's 63rd national park in December 2020. The area – which spans more than 70,000 acres – has long been a playground for outdoor enthusiasts. Its 53-mile stretch of the New River (ironically one of the oldest rivers in the world) is famous for whitewater rafting, with beginner- and family-friendly tours and rapids up to Class V, widely considered some of the most challenging to navigate.

Of course, the park also offers other ways to take in its otherworldly landscape – think scenic driving routes, hiking, biking, climbing, fishing and free ranger-led activities including junior ranger programs. Accommodation options inside the park are limited to camping, but there are plenty of hotels and resorts within a short drive.

Bridge Walk: Lansing

Whatever you do in New River Gorge National Park and Preserve, don't miss the one-of-a-kind Bridge Walk, where guided tours are offered on a catwalk beneath the famous New River Gorge Bridge. The bridge towers 876 feet above the New River, but don't worry – guests are securely fastened to a cable, and tours move at a relaxed pace so you can feel comfortable (and stop for scenic views and photo ops along the way). Previous visitors say the Bridge Walk is a must in West Virginia, with some calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Participants must be at least 8 years old.

If you're feeling extra brave after mastering this walkway, you can even come back for Bridge Day, West Virginia's largest single-day festival, where thousands gather every October to watch daredevils jump off the bridge into the gorge below.

Address: 57 County Route 85/9, Lansing, WV 25862

Hatfield-McCoy Trails

The infamously bizarre Hatfield-McCoy Feud that lasted nearly 30 years (and even inspired a dinner show in Pigeon Forge ) actually took place in West Virginia and Kentucky. Today, the region in which the feud took place is now the largest trail system on the East Coast, with 1,000 miles of wooded pathways, rolling hills and quintessential Appalachian towns to explore.

Waterfall Trail

In June 2022, West Virginia launched a statewide Waterfall Trail, allowing travelers to more easily navigate some of the state's 200-plus waterfalls with a free mobile passport – plus the chance to win prizes along the way. As of 2023, there are 38 trail stops in total. These include the famous Blackwater Falls, where the tannic acid of fallen hemlock and red spruce needles tints the water. Not surprisingly, it's one of West Virginia's most photographed destinations.

Watoga State Park

Watoga State Park was named a Dark Sky Park by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2021, along with the adjacent Calvin Price State Forest and nearby Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park. Travelers who want to catch a glimpse of the nighttime light show can opt for tent camping or cabin accommodations, spring through fall.

Address: 4800 Watoga Park Road, Marlinton, WV 24954

Adventures on the Gorge: Lansing

The ultimate experience in West Virginia, Adventures on the Gorge, is an award-winning adventure outfitter and resort on the rim of New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. The destination resort offers a dizzying array of outdoor activities, the most popular of which is whitewater rafting. Travelers rave about the half- and multi-day excursions for various skill levels, noting that the guides are friendly, helpful and all-around great. Adventure seekers can also enjoy zip lining and canopy tours (including a nighttime MoonTrek), rappelling, mountain biking, guided hikes, horseback riding, cave tours, laser tag and paintball. On Summersville Lake (the largest in West Virginia), there's kayaking, standup paddleboarding and multi-sport excursions that include a little bit of everything.

After an action-packed day, visitors can grab a bite to eat at any of the three on-site restaurants and retreat to their choice of accommodations, which include everything from cozy cabins to glamping tents with views of the New River Gorge Bridge and surrounding forest.

Address: 219 County Route 60/5, Lansing, WV 25862

The Greenbrier: White Sulphur Springs

A National Historic Landmark, The Greenbrier served as a hospital for wounded soldiers during the Civil War and World War II. In 1778, it became "America's Resort," first hosting wealthy Southerners, then celebrities, U.S. presidents and even royalty. You don't have to be a guest of the luxury resort (or an A-lister) to get a glimpse of it – guided hotel tours are offered – but overnight guests enjoy upscale accommodations ranging from signature guest rooms to estate homes, a roster of activities for all ages, golf, a spa, restaurants, a casino, retail shops, seasonal events and more. Whether you splurge for an overnight stay or not, don't miss the Bunker Tour, where you'll discover a former emergency fallout shelter and top-secret government relocation facility for Congress from the Cold War period.

Address: 101 W. Main St., White Sulphur Springs, WV 24986

Lost World Caverns: Lewisburg

Go 120 feet underground to explore stalagmites (some of which measure up to 80 feet tall) and stalactites at Lost World Caverns. Self-guided tours typically take about 45 minutes and are appropriate for all ages, while the Wild Cave Tour for ages 10 and up takes visitors to undeveloped parts of the caverns over the course of several hours. This attraction, which was first discovered in 1942, also includes a museum and gift shop. Previous visitors highly recommend Lost World Caverns, cautioning that the caves can be slippery and difficult to traverse in some areas, so be sure to wear sturdy shoes and a light jacket .

Address: 907 Lost World Road, Lewisburg, WV 24901

Harpers Ferry

Perhaps the most well-known destination in West Virginia, Harpers Ferry is more than a quaint 19th-century town. It's a National Historic Park with Civil War sites including battlefields, remnants of campsites and, most notably, John Brown's Fort and the John Brown Museum. If you don't remember this one from history class, John Brown is the abolitionist credited with leading what's now known as the Harpers Ferry Raid, in which he attempted to start an armed revolt of enslaved people in 1859.

Harpers Ferry is also known as the psychological midpoint of the 2,178-mile Appalachian National Scenic Trail and, as such, attracts thru-hikers to the historic Lower Town's restaurants and nearby vacation rentals. Other highlights in Harper's Ferry include The Point, where you can see the confluence of the Shenandoah and Potomac rivers; crossing the Potomac on a pedestrian bridge to access the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park towpath; and, better still, getting out on the waters in a river tube, cold drink in hand.

Berkeley Springs State Park: Berkeley Springs

Soak in the soothing springs of this state park, known for its warm waters, which maintain a comfortable temperature of 74.3 degrees Fahrenheit, and its bathhouses, where available spa services include massages and mineral baths. The springs date back centuries, first flourishing as a health mecca for Native Americans, then drawing European settlers beginning in 1730. Several years later, George Washington discovered the healing powers of the springs and began visiting them regularly. It is largely because of him that the place now known as Berkeley Springs State Park remains the popular wellness destination it is today. Visitors praise the park and surrounding town, noting that you can see the historic Berkeley Springs Castle (reserved for private events only) from here.

Address: 2 S. Washington St., Berkeley Springs, WV 25411

Mothman Museum: Point Pleasant

In 1966, two grave diggers in Clendenin, West Virginia, reported the sighting of a strange winged figure with red eyes. Shortly after the incident, local residents began to make similar claims, with many blaming the massive creature, nicknamed the Mothman, for the 1967 Silver Bridge collapse and subsequent death of 46 people. The story was so bizarre it captured the attention of Hollywood (resulting in "The Mothman Prophecies" movie, based on a book of the same name) and inspired the Mothman Museum in the town of Point Pleasant, where the mythical creature is said to reside. The museum features original newspaper clippings, handwritten police reports, props used in the 2002 film and more. The Mothman Statue stands 12 feet tall outside of the museum, and the Mothman Festival is hosted every September. Previous patrons of the museum say it's fun and interesting, and that admission – less than $5 for adults – is cheap.

After you explore this eerie museum, spend some time in Point Pleasant, an attraction in itself with great restaurants, shopping, seasonal events and the historic (and supposedly haunted) Lowe Hotel.

Address: 400 Main St., Point Pleasant, WV 25550

World's Largest Teapot: Chester

If you're road-tripping through West Virginia, consider making a stop at this quirky attraction, which measures 12 feet high and 44 feet wide. Before achieving fame, the "World's Largest Teapot" was created as a giant keg for Hires Root Beer and then installed as a snack stand at a mini-golf course in Pennsylvania. In 1938, a man named William "Babe" Devon brought it to Chester, West Virginia. He added a spout, lid and handle so he could use the newly revamped structure to promote the region's then-booming pottery industry, selling teapots and other souvenirs from its window. The teapot went out of business around 1980, was restored by the Chester City Council in 1990, and has sat at the junction of U.S. Route 30 and State Route 2 ever since.

West Virginia Penitentiary: Moundsville

During its 100-plus years in operation, the West Virginia Penitentiary saw riots, homicides and executions including public hangings. So it's no surprise that when the storied prison decommissioned in 1995, former prison guards began offering tours to the public. Current tour options include a Public Ghost Hunt and Private Paranormal Investigations, as the prison is said to be haunted by former inmates. You can even try your hand at an escape room game. Previous visitors confirm the prison tours are all at once creepy, informative and enjoyable. The West Virginia Penitentiary is so spooky that it's been featured in Netflix's "Mindhunter" (along with the town of Moundsville) and Hulu's "Castle Rock," among other TV shows and movies.

West Virginia State Museum: Charleston

Located in the charming state capital of Charleston, the West Virginia State Museum features informative and interactive exhibits that pay homage to the culture and history of the Mountain State. Notable artifacts on display include a pair of Billy the Kid's leather chaps and the telescope George Washington used to survey the state's lands. Previous visitors say this Charleston museum is truly impressive, with some advising you'll need a few hours to see everything it has to offer. Bonus: As a state-operated attraction, the museum is free to enter. The West Virginia State Museum also manages a few historic sites throughout the state, including West Virginia Independence Hall and Camp Washington-Carver.

Address: 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E #435, Charleston, WV 25305

Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine: Beckley

A small, family-operated coal mine and camp from roughly 1890 to 1910 that later became a commercial endeavor until it closed in 1953, the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is now a highly rated attraction in West Virginia. Previous visitors say both kids and adults enjoy exploring the former coal mines with veteran miners, who lead guided tours in authentic "man trips," the cars used in mining operations. When you emerge from the tunnels, explore the Coal Camp, with restored original buildings including the Pemberton Coal Camp Church and the Helen Coal Camp School, then stop by the Youth Museum of Southern West Virginia, which features a planetarium and a recreated homestead from the late 19th century. Admission includes the tour and access to the camp and museum. The Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine is open from April to November, but bring a light jacket no matter when you visit as the mines can get chilly.

Address: 513 Ewart Ave., Beckley, WV 25801

Twin Falls Resort State Park: Mullens

Escape to Twin Falls Resort State Park, a destination resort with more than 25 miles of hiking and biking trails (where you can see the park's namesake waterfalls), an indoor swimming pool, an 18-hole golf course and a restaurant. Overnight lodging options include camping (tents or RVs), cabins and hotel rooms. The park also features a reconstructed pioneer homestead, where guests can learn about frontier life at the attraction's working farm and gardens. Recent guests have left positive reviews of the resort, commenting that it's both beautiful and clean.

Monongahela National Forest

Another nationally protected region in West Virginia, the Monongahela National Forest spans more than 919,000 acres in 10 counties over elevations that range from 1,000 to nearly 5,000 feet above sea level. Areas of interest include Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area, which features the highest peak in West Virginia, and the Dolly Sods Wilderness, notably the Bear Rocks trail. Both areas offer some of the best views in the state. Throughout the vast national forest there are ample hiking and biking trails, scenic driving routes, and places to stop for a picnic lunch. You can also go swimming, boating, fishing, horseback riding and, if you'd like to stay a few days, camping in tents, RVs or on-site cabins. A visit in the winter affords opportunities for snowmobiling, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

NROCKS Outdoor Adventures

With so much rugged mountain landscape, it's no surprise that West Virginia has a Via Ferrata (a mountain route with permanently installed steel rungs and cables). Located near the Monongahela National Forest, NROCKS Outdoor Adventures offers guided rock-climbing tours of the Via Ferrata. Participants aged 13 and up gain 1,085 feet in elevation, cross a suspension bridge that is 150 feet high and 200 feet long, and reach exposed heights of 280 feet during the roughly 1-mile trek, which takes about 3.5 hours. Recent tourgoers say the experience is thrilling, though not for the faint of heart. For the ultimate adrenaline rush, nighttime tours are offered on select dates throughout the year.

Address: 141 County Route 28/5, Circleville, WV 26804

Cass Scenic Railroad State Park: Cass

A remote destination in Pocahontas County, Cass was once a company town for loggers, who transported lumber via what's now known as the Cass Scenic Railroad. Climb aboard a historic steam-driven locomotive (operated by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad) for a scenic ride to Bald Knob, the third-highest point in West Virginia. The train ride , which affords panoramic views of the Appalachians, lasts about 4.5 hours round trip and includes lunch. For those visiting Cass Scenic Railroad State Park with kids, previous visitors recommend the two-hour round trip to Whittaker Station, a former logging camp. Some travelers also suggest a visit in the fall to enjoy the colorful foliage . Within Cass Scenic Railroad State Park, visitors can explore the former lumbering town as well as a gift shop, restaurant, museum and theater. Overnight cabin accommodations are also available.

WVU expert encourages exploration of West Virginia’s ‘wonderland for outdoor adventures’

With more than 78% of West Virginia covered by forests, according to the state’s Division of Forestry, the Mountain State ranks as the third-most-forested state in the nation. The state map is dotted with public lands free for outdoor recreation and each acre is filled with hundreds of wild animals that call West Virginia home.

Every day is packed with opportunities to enjoy all the state has to offer, especially as summer creeps ever closer, so much so that it can seem daunting — luckily, a local recreational expert has advice for beginners and seasoned adventurists alike to appreciate West Virginia’s natural offerings, from its thrilling rapids to relaxing trails.

For some, the most-popular outdoor tourism activities might come to mind easily, like hiking the mountainous terrain for which the state is known or whitewater rafting on the rapids of the New River. Local groups and hobbyists, though, consistently highlight the great variety of activities possible in the deepest of forests or right in your back yard, including bird watching, biking, rock climbing, backpacking, field sketching, tubing and more.

“The beauty of the outdoors is that you can enjoy it simply by showing up,” said Morgan Haas, associate director of WVU’s Adventure WV, an outdoor recreation program serving WVU faculty, students and the community.

And showing up is easier than ever. In addition to public outdoor activities organized year-round, navigational apps like AllTrails or OnX, outdoor gear rental stores and the limitless online resources available at our fingertips make it simple to explore independently or in a group.

“West Virginia is a wonderland for outdoor adventures,” said Haas. “The state offers world-renowned activities like whitewater boating and rock climbing, both of which can be enjoyed in our national park, the New River Gorge, along with pristine hiking and biking trails. Beyond our national park, West Virginia boasts amazing recreational opportunities in numerous communities throughout the state. Whether you’re seeking thrilling adventures or peaceful retreats, West Virginia has something for everyone.”

Haas recommends synthetic clothing made for wicking away moisture, a waterproof rain jacket, a day pack, a couple 32-ounce water bottles, shelf-stable snacks, sun protection, a fleece jacket, a headlamp and a first-aid kit as preparatory items for endless days of exploration. For adventurers with young ones, there are plenty of ways to adjust your expeditions in line with your children’s ages.

“As a mom of a toddler, I’ve found some activities are perfect for her age, while others require a high level of patience and commitment and really aren’t fun for any of us,” said Haas. “As children get older, activities become more accessible and easier to participate in together while having fun.”

She recommends easy and for-fun activities for younger children, while activities that strive for specific goals like backpacking may be more suitable for older children. Ventures like hikes or biking can be adapted for young children with tools like bike trailers or specialized backpacks.

Finding the right excursions for your lifestyle can take some sleepless nights, admitted Haas, but the memories will be worth it.

“Embrace the excitement of being a beginner. There’s something deeply satisfying about learning new skills as an adult, even though it can sometimes feel intimidating. I encourage you to get comfortable with being uncomfortable — that’s how we grow as outdoor adventurers,” said Haas.

She recommends community workshops and certification programs for developing skills that catch your interest. Perhaps most importantly, though, she recommends finding people to share your adventures with, whether that be family, friends, or like-minded strangers.

“Finding a supportive community is also a powerful catalyst. You’re not the only one looking to tackle more-challenging activities — many others are on the same journey. Your local area likely has organized groups with missions focused on getting outside and connecting with like-minded people,” said Haas.

Locally, organizations like the West Virginia Botanic Garden, the WVU Core Arboretum, Adventure WV and others consistently host outdoor recreation activities open to the public.

SOAR with Adventure WV

Megan Bevins | Staff Writer | Thursday, September 21, 2023

Adventure WV invites rising sophomores for outdoor expeditions in Utah and West Virginia, granting three college credits. Scholarships, like the Zachary David Burns Scholarship, are accessible to non-WV residents.

SOAR Group in Utah showing WV Flag

The best part is — students can earn three college credits at the same time!

Participants can choose between two different Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation (SOAR) trips — one exploring Utah and one traveling around the Mountain State.

Logan Chapman, graduate assistant for Climbing and Guided Trips, says that attending a SOAR trip left him feeling more prepared going into his sophomore year.

“I had strategies for success and connections to on campus resources, and the discussions on trip focused pretty heavily on if we were on the path that was right for us,” Chapman said.

Chapman’s experience with SOAR led him to become involved in Adventure WV, eventually becoming a graduate assistant.

“The most enjoyable part of the trip for me was the connections and friendships that we made, and just immediately there's an instant bond with everybody,” he said. “On top of that, it was doing those things and connecting with other people in beautiful, unique places.”

SOAR Utah will span 14 days, May 8-21. The total cost for the trip will be $850.

Throughout the trip, students will explore the Canyonlands National Park and spend multiple days canoeing through the Green River.

“The nice thing about being on the river is the pace of the trip slows down considerably,” Chapman said. “You get up in the morning, make breakfast, spend time floating down the river and then set up camp for the evening.”

“Another great thing is that you get to access places that you can't get to without being on the river,” he added. “We saw a lot of unique sights, beautiful views and some great wildlife encounters.”

Students will be responsible for their own transportation to Denver International Airport, where the trip will begin. All costs following – including transportation, meals, lodging and rentals – will be included.

In order to receive three full credit hours for this trip, students must attend a pre-trip meeting, go on the 14 day expedition, complete two reflection assignments and attend two group meetings once the trip is over. Students must also attend three fall evening follow-up classes.

SOAR WV will span seven days, May 6-12. The trip will include activities like hiking, climbing and whitewater rafting. The total cost of the trip is $225 or free if you're eligible for the Pell Grant.

Gage Sneed, graduate assistant for First Year Trips, says that the SOAR trips differ from First-Year trips in that they visit different places and create a different sort of community aspect.

“I think my favorite part of the trip is just the difference between a SOAR WV trip and a first year trip,” Sneed said. “Going on both, you kind of just get the experience of the first year trip and the different community and different setting and different curriculum over the first year trip.”

“The community is different, the places you go are different, the activities you do are different, the people you meet,” he added. “Your leaders even have a different mindset and aspect of it.”

There are currently 10 slots open for the SOAR WV trip, but that may extend to 20 depending on demand.

The $225 fee will cover gear, food and transportation for the trip. A packing list will be provided on the trip or available for rental at no cost.

Adventure WV offers the Zachary David Burns Scholarship to aid in the fees for SOAR trips.

Zachary Burns was an Adventure WV participant in 2010 who valued his Orientation Trip experience. Sadly, Burns passed away in 2011. In his memory, Burns’ family established a fund to provide funding to students to participate in SOAR (Sophomore Outdoor Adventure Reorientation).

To apply for the scholarship, you must complete and submit the application linked below. Applicants must be non-WV residents. The scholarship committee will look at things such as financial need, quality of application and enrollment status.

10 Tips For Beginner Adventure Riders

A little bit of off-road knowledge can make a world of a difference

One of the worst things you can do as a beginner adventure rider is hit the road without any preparation. You see, adventure riding is much more diverse and technical compared to any other form of riding. It requires you to be a jack of all trades because you will be on the highway for long hours , encounter innumerous dirt roads, and will have to deal with the city traffic more often than not, all the while managing a heavy adventure motorcycle .

As much as it sounds daunting though, adventure riding can prove to be thoroughly enjoyable, provided you follow a few crucial steps. These 10 tips for beginner adventure riders will help you acclimatize to the fun and equally challenging world of adventure motorcycling.

Related: 10 Motorcycle Safety Tips That Will Take Your Riding To The Next Level

10 Use The Right Gear

First things first. For any task, one should have the right gear. There are fine differences in motorcycle gear depending on the kind of riding you do and the kind of bike you have. So before investing in any kind of gear, give enough thought to what you need the gear for in hindsight.

Beginner adventure riding gear includes a dual sport helmet, although a normal street helmet will do as well. Further, a breathable waterproof riding jacket and pants, dual-purpose gloves and a pair of high-protection boots to safeguard you from the surrounding environment. These are bare essentials, but there is much more you can add on top like a balaclava and a hydration backpack, that will do wonders for you as you are starting out.

9 Know Your Braking

It is a golden rule that you do not use your front brakes much. But that only applies to certain surfaces. When it comes to adventure riding and more specifically, when it comes to riding on loose gravel and all that backcountry roads can throw at you , front-braking is often the way to go. This is because you will have less control over your traction on such surfaces. And just jamming the rear brake off-road, especially when you are going downhill isn’t just bad technique - it’s just as dangerous a situation. Instead, rely on the front brake with gentle touches.

8 You Go Where You Look

Beginner riders often make one common mistake. In crucial situations, they end up looking right in front of their fender rather than looking up ahead. It is a rookie mistake that needs to be corrected and one that can be easily worked on with practice. You see, our hands on the clutch will always follow the direction of our eyes. If you look left, you steer left. If you look right, you’ll go right, and if you look right at that oncoming car, you will most probably bump into it. The golden rule is to look as far ahead as you can so that you have a better reaction time while steering your bike.

Related: Off-Roading Tips You Need To Know

7 Learn Basic Bike Maintenance

Now while it's an unsaid rule to have a well-serviced motorcycle before leaving on any adventure. But let's face it, anything can go wrong when you are adventure-riding. So, in such situations, you need to know how to fix small issues on your motorcycle.

Help may not always be around and that is why every beginner adventure rider should have a basic understanding of their motorcycles. On top of this, carry suitable tools suited for your particular motorcycle because tools are what will help you out in such tricky situations. This should enable you to change a flat tire or repair a broken chain link on a remote countryside road.

6 Rest As Often As You Can

Fatigue is the number one enemy of motorcycle riders. Especially when you are out on the highway or far out exploring unpaved roads, you might lose track of time in order to make it to your next stop. This poses a serious problem where fatigue kicks in. Over time, you might slowly start having less control over your motorcycle. And before you know it, your body is completely dehydrated and drained. Hence, it is recommended to take regular stops and hydrate yourself well so that even if the day gets long on the saddle, your body is still able to cope with it well.

5 Choose Soft Over Hard Luggage

The year-old debate of soft versus hard luggage is endless. But when it comes to adventure motorcycling, the debate tips in favor of soft luggage. That's because it gives you the flexibility to carry more while weighing less. And at the same time, it is a whole lot more durable and can take a fair amount of beating.

Hard panniers and cases are undoubtedly more convenient and in most cases, safer. But you best stay away from them if you want your bike to feel more agile. And especially now when even the most affordable soft luggage systems are waterproof, you do not have to worry about getting your gear wet.

4 Learn How To Saddle

Adventure riders, meet your best friend. The technique of standing on a bike, or saddling, is one that will come in more handy than you can ever make of it. It's not just about alleviating that butt pain on long stretches of tarmac, but it has to do more with steering more efficiently on dirt roads.

Thus, it might be a priceless investment to enroll yourself in some kind of adventure riding class over the weekend. This can be a great way to learn about the techniques of gripping the tank, holding the bike and having the right posture while standing on the pegs.

3 Plan Ahead

Yes, yes, we all know that adventure riding should be about minimal planning. That should be okay as long as there is some kind of planning involved. So, having a rough plan of what you intend to do for the next day of riding should be a good place to start.

Ideally, you should have some knowledge about the route you intend to take, the available gas stations on the way, and places where you can take a pit stop. Carrying a map of the area you are in can be a great decision if you are into old-school navigation. Not knowing your destination is only fun when you have some knowledge about the journey itself.

2 Practice Picking Up Your Bike

Perhaps one of the most important of all the 10 tips for adventure riders. Let's face it - your bike will tip over on every trip you take. It's an inseparable part of adventure riding, and you have to learn to enjoy it rather than get demotivated by it.

There is no rider who does not end up struggling to lift their adventure bike after a fall or a crash. So, learn to live with the heft of your ADV. There are many techniques to go about picking up your bike. Learn one that suits you and master it, and then just go about practicing picking up your fallen companion.

1 Light Is Right

As much as you try to shed weight, you are invariably prone to over pack on your first adventure ride. That's just something all beginner riders go through when they are starting out. Over a period of time, you will learn what you need and what you don’t. Hence, learn to make peace with the learning curve.

Different things work for different people, so there is no one perfect way to pack light . Some people ditch carrying a lot of clothes to make space for their electronics. Some folks travel with their camping equipment and decide to leave their gizmo behind. Pack as per your ride and take the weather into consideration - you might not end up needing that hefty fur jacket after all.

Plan Your Cruise With AAA

With many cruise lines now catering to the single crowd, going on a cruise as a single adult can be a great way to meet interesting people to make new friends, new connections and lifelong memories.

No matter what you envision from your dream singles cruise, you can find a ship and a series of destinations that will create unforgettable memories. There are a lot of options to explore, however and the sheer range of choices can quickly feel overwhelming. To help, we've highlighted several of the best cruises for singles. Keep reading to learn what, exactly, sets these expeditions apart.

adventure wv trips

1. Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand

Many singles gravitate towards exciting adventures in exotic destinations such as Bali, Malaysia and Thailand, which hold appeal simply because they provide such distinct scenery and such powerful cultural experiences.

Not all singles are willing or prepared to navigate these destinations on their own, however and this is where the Celebrity Millennium comes into play: an upscale cruise removes the hassle of planning and, instead, encourages you to relax in style.

This particular Celebrity Millennium adventure spans nearly two weeks, incorporating a unique blend of serene island adventures, cosmopolitan exploration and meaningful temple visits. Onboard, globally inspired menus and resort-style lounges are to be expected, along with plenty of adults-only spaces that will appeal to singles.

2. Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords

If Norway's iconic fjords are on your bucket list, you can't afford to miss this awe-inspiring Celebrity Apex trip . Departing from Southampton, the eight-night cruise meanders along the coast of Norway, hitting pleasant spots such as Geiranger or Kristiansand for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Side trips are available and, with up to ten hours docked, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation options abound and, when traveling alone, the staterooms' king-size mattresses feel extra spacious. An adults-only solarium will appeal to relaxation-oriented solo travelers, while abundant dining and entertainment options make it easy to find and connect with new friends.

3. Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure

If you're struggling to choose between glamorous onboard experiences and outdoorsy experiences on land, you're in luck: Celebrity Summit provides the best of both worlds with its various Cruisetour offerings. There are many excellent options that depart from Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks — but the Grand Heartland Adventure is worth considering if you crave something new.

During the Grand Heartland Cruisetour, you'll explore the stunning Inside Passage by cruise ship, before docking in adventure-oriented destinations such as Juneau and Sitka. From there, you'll continue to observe national treasures such as the Hubbard Glacier. Further exploration takes place aboard a glass-domed railcar and even a riverboat.

There's also a lot to experience onboard. The AquaClass stateroom represents a true oasis for single travelers, but the exclusive cocktail lounge and martini bar also warrant a visit. With nearly two weeks of cruising and exploration, you'll have plenty of time to unwind on your own but can also form fast friendships with similarly adventurous travelers.

4. Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Cruises for singles over 50 often emphasize the finer things in life, like elevated cuisine or exquisite wines. These sophisticated details are in abundant supply aboard the Celebrity Edge, which offers a decidedly elegant experience with its Taste of Luxury tour. Although often frequented by retired couples, Celebrity Edge's trips work well as singles cruises.

Available for three or four nights, this remarkable journey begins in Sydney and primarily emphasizes curated on-board experiences. That being said, there are enticing opportunities to explore while docked in Tasmania. With such glamorous suites, restaurants and clubs on board, however, the best attractions can be enjoyed without ever leaving this luxury cruise ship.

adventure wv trips

5. Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Don't assume that Disney cruise adventures are only for kids or families. If you are a proud Disney adult, you can make amazing memories aboard a thematic cruise for singles. This is a popular vacation among theme park enthusiasts, who enjoy a dose of Disney magic while also finding valuable opportunities to indulge and relax.

Disney Wish's three-night Bahamian cruise is also an excellent option for singles who crave a sea-based experience but only have a few days to spare. Yes, young travelers will be around, but there are plenty of adult-only spaces, including sports bars, dance clubs, dedicated pools and even an onboard spa and salon. Musicals, 3D films and fireworks encourage you to embrace your inner child.

adventure wv trips

6. Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal

As we've mentioned, smaller ships provide some of the best cruises for singles over 50. Not everyone desires a river-based trip, however and with Oceania Cruises , there is no need to choose between exclusivity and ocean liner grandeur.

A signature experience can be found aboard Oceania Cruises' iconic Nautica ship, which is calming, yet elegant. Echoing the journey of the famed explorer Jacques Cartier, this tour provides a powerful introduction to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

The land-based excursions are highly educational and, of course, beautiful to behold, but there's also a lot to love on board. Belgian chocolate, Bulgari amenities and turndown service await, with many accommodations also providing spectacular views. Open-seating dining makes it easy to interact with other vacationers while wine-tasting and guest lectures promise plenty of onboard enrichment.

adventure wv trips

7. Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Another appealing option for singles who prefer slightly smaller ships, Oceania Cruises' Ancient World Wonders tour provides stops at some of the world's most iconic locations, such as Santorini and Corfu. Adventures in Dubrovnik and Istanbul can also be expected. On board this remarkable vessel, you'll gaze in awe at the Lalique Grand Staircase and, in general, enjoy a refined ambiance.

Be prepared to try new flavors and forms of expression as you explore unique offerings such as the Artist Loft and Culinary Center. Deep relaxation awaits at the Aquamar Spa or within your luxuriously contemporary stateroom or suite. This ten-night voyage provides plenty of time to lose yourself in the grandeur of the ship and the treasures of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey.

West Virginia tops Grand Canyon 10-6 to win Tucson Regional, earn first trip to super regional

  • Copy Link copied

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Logan Suave had three hits and drove in three runs, West Virginia scored multiple runs in four of the first five innings and the Mountaineers dispatched Grand Canyon 10-6 on Sunday night, winning the Tucson Regional and earning the school’s first berth to a super regional.

Reed Chumley and Grant Hussey each drove in a run for West Virginia (36-22) in the top of the first, but Cade Verduso’s RBI double sparked a three-run rally in the bottom of the inning for Grand Canyon (35-25).

The Mountaineers took the lead for good with a three-run second. Suave, Sam White and Chumley all had RBI singles.

Suave had a two-run double to push West Virginia’s advantage to 7-3 in the third. Ben Lumsden singled in a run in the fourth and White plated a run in the fifth with a double before scoring on a single by Hussey for a 10-3 lead.

Michael Diaz singled in a run in the bottom of the fifth for the Antelopes and Zach Yorke hit a two-run homer in the ninth to cap the scoring.

Aidan Major (5-4) earned the victory, taking over after West Virginia starter Hayden Cooper failed to retire a batter. Major went 4 2/3 innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks.

The Mountaineers captured their first regional title after 15 prior NCAA Tournament appearances.

Grand Canyon has appeared in three regionals, all of them since 2021

West Virginia to Face North Carolina in the NCAA Super Regionals

Christopher hall | jun 3, 2024.

WVU Baseball

The West Virginia Mountaineers (36-22) will meet the overall no. 4 seed North Carolina Tarheels (45-14) in the NCAA Super Regionals in Chapel Hill, NC. Dates (Friday-Sunday, June 7-9 or Saturday-Monday, June 8-10), game time and broadcast will be announced at a later date.

WEST VIRGINIA

West Virginia went 3-0 in the Tucson Regional of the NCAA tournament with a strong performance from the pitching staff and timely hitting in games one and two before an offensive explosion in the regional finals.

Derek Clark held one of the better offenses in the country, Dallas Baptist, to just one run on four hits in the opener for the senior’s eighth win of the season, and his fourth complete game win of the year, while sophomore Logan Sauve provided a three-run home run to lift the Mountaineers to a 4-1 victory.

In game two, sophomore Tyler Switalski threw a career-high 7.2 innings with senior Hambleton Oliver and sophomore Cole Estridge combining to squash Grand Canyon’s momentum, and junior Brodie Kresser providing the offensive spark, going 2-3 with three RBI as the Mountaineers took the 5-2 decision.

West Virginia captured its first Super Regional appearance with a 10-6 win against Grand Canyon. Aidan Major came in relief in the first inning with the bases loaded and not outs in the juniors first appearance since May 5, and a sacrifice is all the Antelopes could muster. The Mountaineers’ bats came alive with four Mountaineers raking in multiple RBIs, highlighted by Sauve’s 3-5 night with three RBI to lead the WVU to a 10-6 win.

NORTH CAROLINA

The Tarheels mounted a comeback in the bottom of the ninth against Long Island in the first game, scoring six runs in the bottom of the ninth with Gavin Gallaher delivering the two-run walk off home run.

North Carolina limited the defending national champion LSU Tigers to two runs while junior Vance Honeycutt’s two hits brought in four runs to lead the Tarheels to a 6-2 win.

LSU extended the weekend with an 8-4 win on Sunday but Monday night, North Carolina eliminated the Tigers with the game-winning RBI coming from senior Alex Madera in the top of the 10  th inning for the 4-3 decision.

Traveling with little ones can be a day at the beach, thanks to these thoughtful gifts.

Just because he’s become a dad doesn’t mean your favorite traveler has to also become a homebody. Sure, it can be tougher to get around with a little person pretty much attached to him but it can be done more enjoyably than he might think.

We’ve found a variety of gifts that make travel so much easier with babies and toddlers that he won’t want to go anywhere without them – both the gifts and the kids – ever again.

Doona Liki Trike S5

He already loves and trusts Doona because of their must-have all-in-one car seat & stroller travel system so he will be thrilled to see that they’ve created the world’s most compact folding trike. Designed for children 10 months to 3 years old, it transforms into five different modes so parents can push little ones in it and leave older kids to ride on their own. So much more fun than a stroller, it will get him and his mini me through the airport without tears. It then folds up easily to toss in an overhead bin. Price: $300

Graco Turn2Me 3-in-1 Car Seat

Getting little ones in and out of car seats can be challenging but Graco has changed the game with a rotating feature that will make Dad’s life so much easier, especially if he’s planning to make frequent stops on a road trip. Of course, safety comes first and this seat protects kids on all sides and can be used rear or forward facing or as a booster. It also has a headrest that adjusts to 10 different positions to keep children safe and comfortable as they grow. Price: $349

7 AM K-Poncho

One of the best inventions ever, this baby carrier cover is perfect for dads headed to coolcation destinations. With its water repellent outer shell and plush lining, it keeps babies cozy, whether they’re facing Dad or the world. It even has hand slits so he can hold on to them. The cover also adapts to all strollers and car seats, making it indispensable at home or away. Price: $100

Dagne Dover Indi Neoprene Diaper Backpack

A diaper bag is a new parent essential but Dad is probably more interested in practicality than cuteness. Luckily, this one has both in spades so anyone will feel good about carrying it around, even on the most luxury vacation — especially in sophisticated black. It easily clips onto a stroller and features lots of pockets, pouches and even a mini changing pad. Plus, it features a dedicated safe space for his laptop so he can get some work done while baby sleeps. Price: $215

Regalo Play Mat with Travel Case

Whether they’re waiting for a flight or spending the night in a hotel, this cushy foam mat gives Dad a clean, safe place to put little ones down. It’s even waterproof so he can use it outdoors and clean it right up afterwards. Older kids will get a kick out of the design, with its roads and parks, and will enjoy playing with their own toy cars and trucks on it. Babies will just find it soft and comfortable and dads will be glad they can give their arms a rest. Price: $49.99

Magnetic Me Lake You A Lot Grow With Me Convertible Coverall

Having to change a baby on a plane or at a rest stop is way easier with one of these adorable, magnetized rompers. Made of super soft, breathable and temperature regulating Tencel modal, it features a magnetic closure, which means no snaps and zippers that can take forever to do properly. It also has foldover cuffs to keep little hands and feet cozy on over-air conditioned flights. You can choose from dozens of cute prints but this one is perfect for spending long weekends at the lake. Price: $40

KeaBabies Baby Car Seat Mirror

Rear facing car seats are safest for babies but, if Dad is driving alone with his little one, it can be disconcerting not to be able to see what’s going on back there. This shatterproof mirror is a game-changer, letting him keep his mind on the road while keeping an eye on his precious cargo. Price $19.96

Looky Lou Bundle

Vacations offer lots of cute photo ops but, let’s face it, babies are not always the most cooperative subjects. Thanks to the innovative Looky Lou, all Dad has to do is clip this cute little rattle to his phone and suddenly everyone’s looking in the right direction and smiling. The bundle comes with a board book introducing little ones to Lou the lion so they’ll be especially happy to see him whenever Dad feels like capturing the moment. Price: $29

Keep Going First Aid Kit Bundle

Because kids are unpredictable and accidents happen, give Dad some peace of mind with this trio of different sized first aid kits to prepare him for anything. He can keep one in the car, toss one in the diaper bag, pack one in the luggage. Well organized and easy to access, the kits include everything from bandages and ointments to nosebleed plugs, tick removers and burn gels. Hopefully he’ll never have to use it but, if he does, it will absolutely be the gift he’s most thankful for. Price: $124.97
