Experience the splendor of the Arabian Gulf to see exotic markets inhale the scent of incense from a traditional bakhoor burner, and experience machboos, a delicious stew made with seafood or meat. Those seeking relaxation and luxury should look no further than the Arabian Gulf. Relax on the perfect beaches and experience the most relaxing spa treatments while enjoying unforgettable culinary experiences and shopping in the souks. The best place to pamper yourself is here.

Arabian Gulf Highlights

A cruise in the Arabian Sea will take you to spectacular scenery in the Middle East , where you will experience the vibrant blue of the Indian Ocean along with vast deserts and areas with rich architecture and landscapes. On the cruise, you'll experience the city's iconic skyscrapers and experience its unique style of city design. Go through these highlights and learn more about the Arabian regions.

1. Unique Architecture and History

There's a lot of history behind the Arabian Gulf, but Dubai is a futuristic metropolis. One of the most prominent trading ports in the first century was Muscat, and another was Oman. Old prisons serving museums and forts, mosques, and palaces are accessible to cruise passengers sailing to the Arabian ports. Al Manamah's Bahrain Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Excavations dating back to 3,000 B.C. have been made.

2. It gives a real sense of exoticness

A magnificent combination of ultramodern glitz and ancient traditions can be found in the Gulf. Throughout the cities, there is a five-time call to prayer each day. On a Thursday or Friday, either Dubai or Abu Dhabi offers a camel market in the inland town of Al Ain. Both bring you to a camel farm where you can pet the animals and admire their calves on a desert safari. Also, Abu Dhabi's Falcon Hospital is a beautiful excursion. These ancient pursuits are still practiced today, even if they serve mainly as spectator sports.

3. Shopping

It will be impossible to resist picking up a few souvenirs when you step inside one of these great cities' souks. Explore Muscat's Corniche and browse the Mutrah Souq, one of Oman's most colorful souks. Shop for pearl jewelry and wood carvings to give your friends and family back home - and treat yourself! You can browse souks and shopping malls in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which are more prominent cities. Dubai, for example, has the world's largest shopping mall!

Enjoy a night of Exotic Tales and Arab Traditions at Shangri-La's Barr Al Jissah Resort as part of an evening curated by Azamara Cruises. Seikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi has 82 domes, 24-carat-gold gilded chandeliers, ornate hand-knotted carpets, and 24-carat-gold domes.Experience the I.M. Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art in Doha, Qatar, showcasing artwork from 1,400 years across three continents.

Ports to visit on Arabian Gulf Cruises

Although cruises to this region are still evolving, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates (home of Dubai and Abu Dhabi), and Oman are all attempting to attract more passengers. We've compiled a list of what you can see and do along a typical Arabian Gulf itinerary.

Dubai, the main port of the Arabian Gulf, has plenty of superlatives. Most cruises spend an overnight here either at the beginning or end of your cruise, so you won't have to worry if you can't see it all in one day. Look at the world's tallest man-made structure before boarding, BurjKhalifa. Dubai Mall is next door, where you can take this region's love for designer labels firsthand.

There is a trend for cruises to head north to Bahrain or Qatar or south to Oman along the Arabian Gulf. Ship's Best of Bahrain tour might bea bit of a bore because Bahrain's mass tourism industry is still developing. For example, rather than simply visiting the world-famous Bahrain International Circuit, why not take a ride in a 4x4 on the Adventure Course?

Even though Qatar is the wealthiest nation on earth, it is not a regular stop for cruises in the region. A trip to the Museum of Islamic Art can shouldn’t be missed on a cruise stopping in the country. The museum houses a collection of 1,400 pieces in a building designed by I.M. Pei.

4. Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi has a seaside corniche like no other in the UAE, which is lush, green, and pleasant to walk along. One of the most beautiful mosques in this region is Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. It is open to the public daily. Take in this Islamic heritage site if you get the chance on your cruise. A sand safari in Abu Dhabi is a great way to explore the vast desert outside the city. Tours offered by Cruise Lines and private operators vary in length and activities. Still, most involve a ride down a slope in an SUV. Seeing a sunrise on these trips is worth the early wake-up if your itinerary allows.

5. Fujairah

Its mountainous terrain also sets it apart from other emirates in the Arabian Gulf (It lies on the Gulf of Oman). Visit the 300-year-old Fujairah Fort, which is undergoing renovation, and take a drive into the Hajar Mountains range. You can also visit Abu Dhabi's oldest mosque.

Khasab is set in the Gulf state of Oman, outside the UAE on the Musandam Peninsula. Small native boats, called dhows, are the most popular excursions on the rugged coastal fjords. There are frequently dolphins spotted here, and the vessels usually halt at Telegraph Island, which was theprimary connection between India and Britain during the height of the British Empire.

Muscat, Oman's capital, is more atmospheric than Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The MuttrahSouk is a Middle Eastern bazaar experience located by the waterfront along the lively corniche. Besides the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, other site attractions include Portuguese fortifications. The Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque-one of the largest on the Arabian Peninsula. You should take a day trip to Nizwa on your second day in Muscat. The ruins of Bahla, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, are among several historical forts you can tour here. Visits to palm oases are often included.

ARABIAN GULF CRUISES

Sailing through the Arabian Gulf unfolds a mystique world, where history and modernity peacefully coexist. Dubai and Abu Dhabi are bustling microcosms, peacefully shared by cultures from all corners of the world. If shopping is your thing, there is no better place to visit than Dubai.

Muscat boasts beautifully manicured parks, long, unspoiled stretches of beach, and an ancient stone moat that surrounds the area. For the explorer, the rich culture and beauty of India will make your cruise holiday an unforgettable one. Our Arabian Gulf cruise is the perfect holiday getaway for you.

Itineraries

Itineraries that sail in the Arabian Gulf mainly depart from Abu Dhabi & Dubai and call into ports around the Arabian Sea and Red Sea. Some itineraries depart from the south eastern Mediterranean offering a longer and more diverse cruise option. These are mainly repositioning cruises when cruise ships are relocated to the Middle East for the winter season and include several days at sea. The most popular Arabian Gulf cruise destinations are the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, India and Jordan. Cruises in the Arabian Gulf mainly offer 7-night itineraries with overnights in Dubai, Muscat and Abu Dhabi. The India cruise itineraries range from 12 – 14 Nights.

The Arabian Gulf is famous for sunshine all year round. The main cruising season is in winter, from December through March when the weather is mild. Repositioning cruises usually take place in October and November and again in March and April when the season ends.

Cruise Lines

Popular cruise lines sailing this winter in the Arabian Gulf are MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises .

Ports in the Arabian Gulf

Sharm-el-sheikh, egypt, abu dhabi, united arab emirates.

The sleek and modern capital of U.A.E. presents a fascinating mixture of tradition and progression. Shaikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the main attraction of Abu Dhabi, is an architectural beauty. It is the world’s largest mosques, with a capacity for an astonishing 40,000 worshippers. Don’t miss the Ferrari World Abu Dhabi – the world’s first Ferrari theme park and the largest attraction of its kind. The park tells the Ferrari story with passion and excitement through more than 20 exhilarating and educational rides and attractions, interactive shopping and authentic Italian dining experiences. The other attractions include the Al-Hosn Palace used by the Cultural Foundation, the beautiful Capital Garden of the Corniche, and the Women’s Craft Centre where you will be able to shop for some very detailed souvenirs.

Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Dubai is a cosmopolitan oasis, admired for its untiring vigor, gusty ambition and the ability to dream up and realise projects. This is a city of superlatives that has birthed the tallest building (Burj Khalifa), only 7-star hotel (the Burj al-Arab), largest artificial islands (the Palm Islands), the world’s largest dancing fountain; a huge indoor Ski paradise and many more unbelievable places. With the city gearing up to showcase many more grand projects for World Expo 2020, visiting Dubai now may feel like a trip to the future. Explore the souk bazaars for gold and silks, Persian and Afghani rugs and more. And be sure to visit the Jumeirah Mosque to get a glimpse of the cultural side of Dubai.

Muscat, Oman

The capital of Oman has undergone rapid urbanization in recent times. But a glimpse of Muscat’s past shows the old houses lining the Mutrah corniche above the harbor, and in the traditional market souks. The Sultan’s Palace and the National Museum are the main attractions in the city. Muscat offers a chance to indulge in Amonage or Ubar perfumes produced here, which are the world’s most expensive.

DAMMAM, Saudi

Dammam is known for its airy waterfronts and sandy beaches and has a growing reputation as an arts, sports and entertainment destination. Due to the heaby influence of frequent travelers, this city’s cuisine has an international flavour to it, and its urban landscape is marked by a striking contrast of modern and historic architecture. Dammam is also the coastal gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Al Ahsa, home to one of the world’s largest natural oases and an intricate cave system.

Jeddah, Saudi

Visitors can travel back in time walking through the streets of Al Balad, Jeddah’s UNESCO World Heritage recognized Hijazi style old town, or stroll down the waterfront corniche and take time to admire the world’s tallest fountain. Jeddah, the commercial center of Saudi Arabia is a vibrant hub combining heritage and modernity. Jeddah is also the principal gateway to Makkah, the holiest city in Islam, located just 65 km to the east

Doha, Qatar

Doha is located on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country. It has an impressive collection of architecture for such a small desert peninsula, home to marvels of symmetry like the IM Pei-designed Museum of Islamic Art, and the National Museum of Qatar, which was designed by Jean Nouvel and is as awe-inspiring inside as out. Doha is a traditional and determinedly modern, a vibrant hub of art, culture and untouched desert landscapes.

There are many more Arabian Gulf Cruise ports waiting to amuse you. Check out our Gulf cruises from Dubai and Abu Dhabi for more information on these bustling destinations.

What to expect aboard AROYA, the first-ever Saudi Arabian cruise line

Saudi Arabia has announced the launch of AROYA, its first-ever domestic cruise line, and the first homegrown cruise brand in the Arab world, marking a true sea change in the regional cruise industry, but what will travelling aboard a Saudi cruise line be like?

arabian sea cruises

AROYA is the first homegrown cruise brand in the Arab world

AROYA will be owned by Cruise Saudi, which is itself owned by Saudi Arabia’s sovereign wealth fund, but will be independently operated. Details about itineraries and the onboard experience have yet to be announced, but it seems clear that AROYA will showcase the natural beauty and cultural heritage of its home country.

The Saudi Arabian cruise line will offer a unique travel experience that combines relaxation, entertainment, and education, eschewing the bells and whistles of other cruise lines in favour of cultural and educational enrichment. This will likely be reflected in the cruise itineraries offered by the line.

arabian sea cruises

Old Quarter, Jeddah

AROYA will offer shore excursions to key cultural sites in Saudi Arabia. The Kingdom is home to many important cultural and historic destinations. One of the most popular destinations for tourists is the historic city of Jeddah, which is known for its beautiful architecture, bustling markets, and seaside promenade. Jeddah is also home to several museums and art galleries, which would be of particular interest to passengers interested in learning more about Saudi Arabian culture.

Jeddah will also be the homeport for AROYA Cruises, following a successful business model established by MSC Cruises , which has operated several popular cruise seasons out of Saudi Arabia, using Jeddah as the homeport for its Red Sea itineraries.

arabian sea cruises

Al Hijr, Saudi Arabia

Itineraries have yet to be confirmed, but a key cultural site that a Saudi Arabian cruise line might visit is the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Al-Hijr , which is located in the northwest of the country. Al-Hijr is a pre-Islamic archaeological site that contains the remains of a series of stone structures and tombs, many of which date back to the first century BC. This site is of significant historical and cultural importance and would be an excellent destination for passengers interested in learning more about the country’s ancient past.

Al-Hijr lies several hundred kilometres inland and would be accessed from the port of Yanbu, or indeed the futuristic city of NEOM, a greenfield development that will include a floating industrial complex, a global trade hub, tourist resorts and a linear city called The Line—all powered exclusively by renewable energy sources.

arabian sea cruises

AROYA Cruises will operate the former World Dream (renamed Manama)

Accomodation options aboard AROYA Cruises will likely range from the affordable inside cabins of most mainstream cruise brands, to more exclusive suites and even penthouses in a nod to the ultra-rich clientele that characterise the Middle East tourism market .

arabian sea cruises

A suite aboard World Dream prior to her sale to AROYA

The cruise line would likely offer a range of high-end cabins and suites, with amenities such as private balconies, luxurious bedding, and top-of-the-line entertainment systems.

AROYA will also likely offer a variety of onboard amenities designed to promote relaxation and well-being, such as a spa and wellness center, fitness facilities, and of course several swimming pools. The cruise line may also offer specialized activities and classes such as yoga, meditation, and other wellness-focused programs, rather than the big, boozy parties found aboard other cruise lines.

arabian sea cruises

Pool deck aboard World Dream prior to sale

Saudi Arabia is known for its rich cultural heritage, and a Saudi Arabian cruise line would offer a range of entertainment options designed to showcase this cultural wealth. This might include traditional music and dance performances, as well as art exhibits and other cultural displays. There is also likely to be live music and comedy performances to film screenings and interactive workshops, but they will be tailored to remain sensitive to the cultural values of Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab world.

Some of the entertainment may be gender-segregated for example, and there may be women-only events and activities in some of the lounges during the day, while at least one of the pools onboard, and spa, will almost certainly be gender-segregated. Similarly, passengers may be expected to adhere to a dress code that prohibits roaming the ship in swimming costumes.

It’s unclear whether AROYA ships will be an alcohol-free environment: As alcohol consumption is prohibited in Saudi Arabia, the cruise line would likely be an alcohol-free environment, but the Kingdom has made moves in recent years toward introducing spaces in which alcohol consumption is allowed for tourists . What will almost certainly not be offered on-board is a casino, as gambling is strictly forbidden in Saudi Arabia.

When it comes to dining, AROYA will offer a high-end, but unique range of cuisines, as all food served onboard will likely be Halal. Halal refers to food and drinks that are permissible under Islamic law, meaning they must be prepared and consumed in accordance with specific guidelines.

arabian sea cruises

Manama (formerly World Dream) provides a range of dining options

Some of the key requirements of halal food include that it must be slaughtered in a specific way, with the animal facing Mecca, and the person performing the slaughter must say a prayer. The food must also not contain any alcohol or pork products, and any meat must be from an animal that has been raised and fed in accordance with Islamic principles.

For AROYA as a Saudi Arabian cruise line, halal food options would be an important consideration for catering to Muslim passengers, who make up a significant portion of the country’s population, as well as its own values as a Saudi-based cruise line. The line would likely offer a wide variety of halal dishes, including traditional Middle Eastern cuisine such as hummus, falafel, and shawarma, as well as international cuisine that is prepared in accordance with halal guidelines, much like international hotels based in the Kingdom.

AROYA then will offer a unique and culturally rich travel experience that showcases the beauty and heritage of the country while also adhering to local customs and traditions.

Land Programs & Hotels

See the most modern, technologically advanced attractions in the capitals of Dubai and Abu Dhabi, with an enlightening day in between spent exploring the timeless desert and an authentic Bedouin village.

Arrive at the Dubai International Airport. You will be met outside the Customs area and transferred to your hotel.

Check in time is at 3:00 pm. Although every effort will be made to have the rooms available sooner, this cannot be guaranteed. Should your flight arrive very early in the morning you may wish to book an additional night.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure and all meals are on your own.

Note: Guests arriving at the Abu Dhabi airport will be required to pay a surcharge for a transfer.

Day 2 – March 18, 2026

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before setting out for Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the United Arab Emirates and named after a breed of gazelles by a Sheikh of the Bani Yas tribe. This magnificent city which was founded in 1761 is situated on a small peninsula surrounded by a cluster of islands.

Your tour today offers an ideal introduction to Abu Dhabi. The first stop is the magnificent Grand Mosque of Abu Dhabi. The majestic Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Mosque is probably the most imposing religious and national landmark in Abu Dhabi to date. It is also arguably one of the most important architectural treasures of contemporary UAE society - and one of the most beautiful in the world - initiated no less by the late president HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who is fondly thought of as the father of UAE.

Also pay a visit to Qasr al Watan Palace. Prepare to walk through majestic hallways, uncover centuries of Arabian knowledge, marvel at the beauty of Arabian craftsmanship, express yourself with interactive installations, and delve into the region’s rich heritage of artistic contributions.

Following an enlightening visit at the Palace, the group will dine at a restaurant in the Conrad Etihad Towers. This is followed by a visit to the Louvre Abu Dhabi – the first universal museum in the Arab world. This museum brings the Louvre name to Abu Dhabi and presents both ancient and contemporary works of historic, cultural, and sociological interest from around the world. Virtually surrounded by the sea, the dozens of buildings that comprise the museum are linked by waterfront promenades and by the museum’s most arresting feature – its dome. As sunlight filters through the dome’s perforations, it creates a “rain of light” effect in the museum galleries below.

Return to Dubai where the remainder of the day will be at your leisure and dinner on your own.

**Note: The Grand Mosque does not provide ladies a headscarf or abaya free of charge and there is no shop on sight to buy them. Ladies please come prepared with something to cover you head or entrance will unfortunately be denied. For men and women: no transparent clothing, no shorts or skirts, no sleeveless shirts, no clothing with profanity and no tight clothing (including leggings) or beachwear.

Following breakfast at your hotel enjoy a morning at leisure to enjoy the facilities of the hotel or perhaps to do some exploring near your hotel. Lunch is on your own.

In the afternoon you will depart for an adventurous dune dinner safari. Experience the sheer thrill of driving up and down golden yellow sand dunes in comfortable 4-wheel drive vehicles. Drive past the Bedouin villages and stop at a camel camp to discuss the “news” of the day!

You will then enjoy some thrilling dune bashing with the experienced drivers over golden sand dunes.

Close to sunset, the group arrives at the sunset point where "time stands still". Experience the silence of the desert and watch the stunning vista of endless dunes and the magical desert sunset.

After sunset you will continue your journey deep into the desert until you reach the soft light of a Bedouin Village.

The campsite is specifically built to depict an authentic Bedouin Village with Barasti (dried palm leaves) tents. It is beautifully lit and decorated with rustic carpets and low tables with soft Arabic music in the background. Despite the rustic appeal, the campsite does have modern restroom facilities and basins with running water.

The campsite even has one area set-up with hubbly bubbly water pipes (Shisha’s) where you can relax and try a puff or two of this local favorite past time after your buffet barbeque dinner or you can watch a belly dancer as she dances to the rhythm of the music.

Following this fun filled Arabian evening you will head back to your hotel.

**Note: Guests do not drive. 4-wheel drive vehicles are used and the drive can be quite bumpy. This is not recommended for anyone with bad backs or if they are pregnant. We recommend having a light lunch prior to the commencement of the tour. Please wear casual clothing and bring a light sweater or jacket for the evening hours. This tour is subject to weather conditions. Seating for the dinner is on low divan cushions as per the typical Bedouin way of dining

After breakfast at your hotel and check-out, proceed with your group on a modern Dubai city tour.

Begin with a photo stop at Jumeirah Mosque - a magnificent example of modern Islamic architecture. Another photo stop is made near the world renowned five-star hotel which is a famous landmark of the city “The Burj Al Arab”.

Next, drive through what is considered the 8th wonder of the world - The Palm Jumeirah. Enjoy the drive through Palm Island and take in the beautiful Jumeirah coastline.

Continue to Sheikh Zayed Road and visit the Dubai Mall - the largest shopping mall in the world as well as the most visited retail and lifestyle destination in the world, welcoming over 100 million visitors every year. With more than 1,200 stores and a host of world-class attractions, The Dubai Mall is revolutionizing the modern shopping experience and worth the visit even if you don’t shop!

From here you will walk to the Burj Khalifa – the tallest building in the world. Head up to the 124th floor for the opportunity to view the entire city in the viewing gallery.

Proceed to the Museum of The Future where you will step into the year 2071. Walk past exhibitions that straddle the past and future in a beautiful blend. Admire the gleaming 77-meter torus shaped structure with calligraphy panels all around. The absence of columns inside makes this structure quite a

feat in modern engineering. Spread across five floors are five different chapters covering themes of climate change, ecology, health, wellness, spirituality, imagination, and the future of space travel and living.

Following the museum visit, your program will end with a transfer to the Port of Dubai where you will embark the ship.

  • Post-Cruise

Visit the most archaeologically important sites in and around Athens, including the Acropolis, the Temple of Poseidon and Ancient Corinth, with a stop at the extraordinary manmade Corinth Canal as well.

PLEASE NOTE: This is an extensive 4-day program that covers a lot of ground by luxury coach. There is a lot of driving involved but guests will have a unique opportunity to visit two of the most precious and sacred sites in a beautiful and unspoiled part of Northern Greece. Due to the amount of walking over uneven ground and steps at the various ancient sites, this program is not suitable for guests who utilize a wheelchair, walker, cane or who have other mobility restrictions.

Disembark the ship in Piraeus, Greece, meet your guide and set off to Athens for a guided visit to the Acropolis site. You will pass by landmarks such as Constitution Square, the Houses of Parliament, the Neoclassical-style university buildings, the Royal Palace and the Old Olympic Stadium of Athens. The stadium is built entirely of marble and offers a great view of the Acropolis in the distance. The highlight is when you arrive at the foot of the magnificent Acropolis, one of the most famous and photographed ancient monuments in the world.

During the walking tour, the guide describes the history. Once you get to the top, you will have some free time to wander round and admire the ancient temples of Athena Nike and the towering Parthenon.

Afterwards, you will visit the breathtaking Acropolis Museum, whose collection of artifacts was excavated from the Acropolis. After browsing the museum, you will proceed to your hotel to check-in.

Note: Expect high temperatures in the summer months and heavy crowds. There are upwards of 100 or more un-even steps to get to the top of the monument. There is handrail in some spots but not everywhere. Those not wishing to venture to the top can remain at the bottom and wait for the group to return. The ground at the top is uneven. Large bags are not permitted here and must be left on the tour bus.

The remainder of the day is at your leisure with meals on your own.

After breakfast you will depart your hotel for a guided visit of the Temple of Poseidon. Enjoy a wonderful drive along the scenic coastal road, which affords a splendid view of the Saronic Gulf and passes through the beautiful suburbs of Glyfada, Kavouri, Vouliagmeni, Varkiza, and Lagonissi.

At Cape Sounion you will visit the 5th century BC Temple of Poseidon, standing some 200 feet above the sea at the edge of a cliff. It is one of the most breathtaking and deeply moving sights in all of Greece. This is the place where the ancient Greeks worshipped their mighty god of the seas, Poseidon.

Lunch will be served in a traditional rustic taverna located in the small town of Kalyvia. In this eatery, you will enjoy truly traditional Greek cuisine.

In the evening, you will take a stroll through the enchanting historical area of Athens with its traditional streets, restaurants, shops and colorful old quarter, where ancient monuments and Byzantine churches are abundant. In the Plaka neighborhood, you will enjoy a traditional Greek dinner before walking back to your hotel.

After an American breakfast, you will board the coach and head to the Isthmus of Corinth to view the famous Corinth Canal, which is four miles long, 70 feet wide and has sloping sides 170 feet high. It connects the Ionian and Aegean seas to provide a maritime short cut. Note: this program does not include a transit of the canal.

Your next stop will be at Ancient Corinth. The ruins that lie in this area are a surprising mix of a 6th-century BC Greek city and a 44 BC Roman city -- the latter was built after Julius Caesar placed a colony on this desolate site. You will see the ruins and excavations of both, including where the Christian Basilica, the starting lines of a Greek racetrack, a sacred spring with its bronze lion's-head spouts, and the elaborate Roman fountain of Peirene were located.

After lunch you will visit the somber and mighty ruins of ancient Mycenae -- vestiges of a kingdom that, for 400 years, was the most powerful in all of Greece. Enter the Citadel of Mycenae on foot, approaching it through the famous Lion Gate. Inside are the shaft graves discovered by Schliemann. You will also visit the Beehive Tomb, known sometimes as the Tomb of Agamemnon, the Greek Commander-in-Chief during the Trojan War.

A short drive will bring you to the first capital of modern-day Greece after the war of Independence. Nafplion is now regarded as one of the most romantic destinations in Greece, and you will walk through its Venetian and neoclassical buildings, old neighborhoods and large squares. You will see the famous Bourtzi protecting the entrance to the harbor and Akronafplia and Palamidi castles, which add a sense of drama to this stunning seaport town.

After your breakfast and check out, transfer to the Athens airport for your flight home. Should you have a late flight, luggage storage will be available at the hotel until your transfer time.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers.

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

Highlights of an arabian sea cruise.

Desert landscapes and blissful beaches bordering turquoise tinged water await you in the countries bordering the Arabian Sea. You’ll also have the chance to visit unforgettable cities in India and the Middle East.

Oman Cities and Beaches

While in Muscat, you’ll be in a vibrant city bordering the Arabian Sea. You’ll get the chance to explore its top sights, beautiful architecture, as well as learn more about the culture of Oman. The city is also close to incredible beaches that are right by the warm, salty water of the Arabian Sea.

West Coast of India

The western coastline of India is completely bordered by the Arabian Sea, making our Dubai and India Cruises an exciting way to explore the sea since you’ll sail to or from Dubai and see the water views of the Arabian Sea before exploring ports of call in India like Mumbai, Goa, and Cochin.

If you have an overnight port of call in India, you’ll have time to journey to the magnificent Taj Mahal, one of the most impressive architectural wonders in the world. Marvel at its unique dome-shaped roof and gleaming white marble exterior as you gaze at the mausoleum from across the long river-fed pool in front of it.

Arabian Sea Cruise Ports

The ports of call located along the Arabian Sea that you can sail to on a cruise include Muscat, Oman; Goa, India; Cochin, India; and Mumbai, India. In addition your Arabian Sea cruise will stop in the United Arab Emirates and also may call at ports in Sri Lanka and Thailand. Arabian Sea and Suez Canal itineraries take you up through the Suez Canal waterway that runs through Egypt and into the Mediterranean Sea where you can explore European ports of call.

Goa (Mormugao)

Mumbai (Bombay)

Arabian Sea Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are available during your Arabian Sea that can give you a day full of action-packed exploration or laidback relaxation. However you want to spend your day, you’ll be astounded by the sights and flavors you’ll experience during your time in port.

Desert Exploration

While in port in Muscat, Oman, you’ll be in a prime location to see some of the vast desert that is located just a short drive from the city of Muscat. A shore excursion that takes you into the desert on a dune drive is a safe and fun way to explore it.

Beach Break

If you’re excited about an Arabian Sea cruise, you’re likely also excited about getting the chance to swim in the Arabian Sea. You can do so on a beach break shore excursion that takes you to one of the region’s best beaches with serene lounge chairs lining the sea for you to relax on.

Food and Drink Tours

Learn what people who live along the Arabian Sea eat and drink on a shore excursion that focuses on cuisine or tea. High Tea can be found in both Goa and Muscat. You can also visit local markets to taste fresh produce and enjoy a private dinner featuring local cuisine on a Chef’s Market Discovery.

Helpful Tips Before You Go

It’s important to plan out what you’ll pack carefully and thoughtfully. Many of the ports you’ll visit during an Arabian Sea cruise have traditionally strict dress rules for men and women, and women in particular will want to make sure to dress appropriately, which perhaps means more conservatively and covered up than you’re used to back home.

In addition, you’ll want to ensure that -- while staying appropriately covered -- you stay cool. The countries bordering the Arabian Sea often have hot temperatures and wearing loose-fitting clothing in breathable, natural fabrics like cotton and linen are key to feeling more comfortable.

When visiting Oman, be aware that the drinking customs are different there. Drinking in public is not allowed and it is a crime to be drunk in public, and even local residents need to get a special license in order to be able to drink at home. For tourists, there are hotels and restaurants that have an alcohol license where you can get a drink. Be sure you are purchasing alcohol from a licensed seller.

When in India, don’t be surprised if you see people eating with their hands since it is customary not to use cutlery in many regions. Also, when dining in India, be aware that the cow is considered to be a sacred animal and eating beef is outlawed in many Indian states.

What is the current oil price today?

WTI futures traded at $75.83 per barrel, as of 9 a.m. ET. Year to date, WTI prices are up by 3.25%.

Brent futures traded around $79.73/bbl, an increase of 1.70% in the last 24 hours. Year to date, Brent prices are up by 0.85%.

West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil price today

WTI futures rose by 1.95% to $75.83/bbl, as of 9 a.m. ET.

WTI oil price chart

West Texas Intermediate prices have drifted lower in 2024, but prices are up 10.07% over the past three years.

WTI crude fell to its 52-week low of $66.81 per barrel on June 12, 2023. It reached its 52-week high of $95.52 on Sep. 27, 2023. That’s 20.61% higher than the current futures price.

Brent crude oil price today

Brent futures rose by 1.70% to $79.73/bbl, as of 9 a.m. ET.

Brent crude chart

Brent crude oil is generally subject to the same supply and demand factors that influence WTI crude prices, so the long-term price chart looks extremely similar to the WTI chart.

Brent crude oil prices hit their all-time high of $147.50/bbl during the oil market boom in July 2008. However, WTI futures contract prices dropped to as low as negative $40/bbl on April 20, 2020, driven largely by a lack of U.S. storage options during the COVID-19 pandemic. Brent futures contracts remained well above zero, bottoming at around $25/bbl that day.

Brent crude fell to its 52-week low of $71.69 per barrel on June 12, 2023. It reached its 52-week high of $96.62 on Sep. 27, 2023. That’s 17.48% higher than the current futures price.

What is crude oil? And what is crude used for?

Crude oil is one of the most important commodities in the world, serving as a key energy source and as a raw material used to produce plastics, chemicals and other products. Nearly all the crude oil imported or produced in the U.S. is refined into petroleum products, including gasoline, diesel fuel and heating oil.

The prices of U.S. WTI crude oil and international Brent crude oil are influenced by several factors that can change the market’s supply and demand balance.

The weather in the U.S. market can drastically alter near-term demand for heating oil and natural gas, sending crude oil prices higher.

Natural disasters and geopolitical conflicts worldwide can disrupt production and create oil supply shortages. The U.S. and global economies experience much higher industrial energy demand during periods of strong economic growth and lower demand during economic downturns. Finally, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries can significantly alter global crude oil supplies by increasing or cutting production.

WTI crude is a blend of oils extracted from U.S. oilfields in Texas, North Dakota and Louisiana and is delivered to Cushing, Oklahoma.

WTI oil has an American Petroleum Institute gravity of 39.6 degrees, considered “light.” WTI also has a sulfur content of just 0.24%, making it very “sweet.” WTI crude oil is typically the benchmark for U.S. oil prices in the trading world.

Brent crude

Brent crude is a sweet, light blend of oils extracted from the North Sea near Europe.

Brent crude is oil extracted from the Brent, Ekofisk, Forties and Oseberg oil fields. Brent has an API gravity of 38 degrees and a sulfur content of 0.4%, making it slightly heavier and less sweet than WTI. Brent is typically used as a benchmark for international oil markets, such as markets in the Middle East, Europe and Africa.

WTI vs. Brent crude

WTI and Brent crude oil blends are both sweet, light crude oil bends used as benchmarks in financial markets. However, there are five key differences between WTI and Brent:

  • Extraction: WTI is extracted from U.S. oilfields in Texas, North Dakota and Louisiana, while Brent crude is extracted from the North Sea near Europe.
  • Composition: WTI is slightly lighter and sweeter than Brent oil.
  • Geopolitics: WTI prices are more heavily influenced by U.S. politics and policies, while international politics and embargoes have a greater influence on Brent prices.
  • Exchange: Brent crude futures contracts are primarily traded on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), while WTI futures contracts are primarily traded on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX).
  • Pricing: WTI and Brent crude oil prices are very highly correlated, but Brent oil has historically traded at a slight pricing premium to WTI.

Brent Crude/WTI spread

The difference between the spot price of Brent crude and WTI crude is called the Brent/WTI spread.

The Brent/WTI spread has historically ranged between $4/bbl and $8/bbl, but it can expand or contract based on factors related to U.S. and international supply and demand conditions. For example, the Brent/WTI spread hit nearly $14/bbl in April 2011 when protests sparked market fears of significant oil supply disruptions in the Middle East.

What are oil futures?

One of the most popular ways investors speculate on crude oil and other commodity prices is by trading futures contracts. Futures contracts are agreements to buy or sell a standardized amount of an asset at a specific price on a particular future date.

WTI crude futures

The most popular WTI crude oil futures contracts are traded on the NYMEX. Each CL contract represents 1,000 barrels of oil, and the contracts trade Sunday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. U.S. ET.

Brent crude futures

The most popular Brent Crude Oil futures contracts are traded on the ICE under the symbol B, but investors can also trade the contracts on the CME Globex trading platform under the symbol BZ. Trading hours for Brent futures on CME are the same as WTI futures: Sunday to Friday from 6 p.m. to 5 p.m. U.S. ET. But Brent futures on ICE trade from 8 p.m. to 6 p.m. U.S. ET on ICE business days.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

To buy and sell crude oil futures contracts, you must open a brokerage account that offers commodity futures trading. The primary futures contracts for WTI crude oil trades on the NYMEX under CL. The primary futures contracts for Brent crude oil trades on the ICE under the symbol B.

Anyone can buy or sell popular oil stocks simply by opening and funding a standard brokerage account.

Popular oil stocks include global oil majors like Exxon Mobil (XOM), oil and gas exploration and production companies like ConocoPhillips (COP), and oil and gas midstream pipeline companies like Enbridge (ENB).

Saudi Arabian oil is neither WTI, extracted in the U.S., nor Brent, extracted in the North Sea near Europe. Saudi Arabia’s state-owned oil company , Saudi Aramco, uses the Dubai/Oman crude oil benchmark when pricing its oil for delivery to Asia.

Caspian Sea: The World's Largest Lake (Yes, You Read That Right)

Map of Caspian Sea, focus on Baku, Azerbaijan, and the surrounding area

One of Earth's most interesting natural features, the Caspian Sea is the largest inland body of water on the planet, defying conventional classifications to be both a sea and a lake.

Situated between Europe and Asia, this colossal sea has plenty of other unique qualities too, such as its unusual salinity, distinct geography and biodiversity , and its economic and political significance to the five nations that surround it.

Geography of the Caspian Sea

Formation of the caspian sea, topographical characteristics, unusual salinity, biodiversity and ecology, geopolitical dynamics, economic significance.

Nestled within the heart of the Caspian region, the Caspian Sea lies at the crossroads of continents, bordered by five countries: Kazakhstan to the northeast, Turkmenistan to the east, Iran to the south, Azerbaijan to the west and Russia to the northwest.

Stretching over 745 miles (1,200 km) from north to south and spanning a surface area of approximately 143,200 square miles (371,000 square km), the Caspian Sea holds the title of the world's largest inland body of water.

For reference, this means its surface area is roughly equal to the country of Japan.

The Caspian Sea basin, encompassing a vast catchment area, is fed by numerous rivers, the most notable being the Volga River, which empties into the northern Caspian. Smaller rivers such as the Ural River contribute to the inflow as well, enriching the sea with freshwater inputs.

The formation of the Caspian Sea unfolded over millions of years. Unlike the oceans, this body of water is not the result of tectonic plate movement or continental drift. Instead, it emerged through a combination of tectonic activity, geological processes and climatic changes.

During the late Cretaceous period, around 70 to 60 million years ago, the region that now encompasses the Caspian Sea was part of the ancient Tethys Sea, a vast ocean separating the supercontinents of Laurasia and Gondwana.

Over time, as tectonic plates shifted and collided, the Tethys Sea began to fragment and shrink, giving rise to smaller basins and seas, including the Caspian Sea region .

The gradual convergence of Eurasian and Arabian tectonic plates led to the uplift of mountain ranges, including the Caucasus Mountains to the west and the Alborz Mountains to its south. These mountain ranges acted as natural barriers, trapping water and creating a basin that eventually became the Caspian Sea.

At the same time, Earth's climate was fluctuating over millions of years, causing periods of glaciation and global warming to alter the sea level and precipitation patterns. During glacial periods, large ice sheets formed, locking up water and causing global sea levels to drop. This caused the Caspian basin to be cut off from the oceans reduced the volume of inflow from rivers.

During interglacial warming periods, melting ice sheets and increased rainfall led to rising sea levels and greater inflow of freshwater from rivers. These fluctuations in sea level and freshwater input affected the Caspian Sea's size, depth and salinity over time.

What sets the Caspian Sea apart is not just its size, but also its distinct features. If you divide the sea into three main sections — the northern Caspian Sea, middle and southern Caspian — a diverse topography reveals itself.

  • The northern Caspian, characterized by its shallow depths, gently slopes towards the south, where it meets the middle Caspian.
  • In the middle, the sea becomes deeper compared to the north Caspian, with an average depth of about 623 feet (190 meters) and a maximum depth of more than 3,280 feet (1,000 meters), or about two-thirds of a mile (1 km).
  • The abrupt western slope contrasts sharply with the gentler eastern gradient.
  • The southern Caspian, nestled along the Iranian shore, presents a different landscape altogether. Here, the sea meets the towering peaks of the Caucasus Mountains, creating a narrow marine plain before plunging into deeper waters.

The Caspian Sea's southern coastline is dotted with the coastal towns of Northern Iran, each with its own unique charm. Among the most prominent is Bandar-e Anzali , which has been a major port city on the Caspian Sea since the early 19th century.

The Caspian Sea is also unique for its unusual salinity, compared to typical oceans and seas. Essentially, it displays the characteristics of both freshwater and saltwater bodies.

Unlike most seas, which have open connections to the ocean and experience regular tidal influxes of saltwater, the Caspian Sea is largely landlocked. This limited exchange with oceanic waters restricts the inflow of saltwater into the Caspian basin.

On the other hand, the Caspian Sea receives significant freshwater inputs from various rivers, including the Volga, Ural and Kura. These rivers carry freshwater from distant mountain ranges and vast plains, diluting the salinity of the Caspian Sea. The Volga River, in particular, is the largest contributor of freshwater to the Caspian, accounting for the majority of its inflow.

Despite the influx of this freshwater, the Caspian Sea does not exhibit the low salinity levels characteristic of most freshwater lakes.

Instead, it maintains a moderate salinity level, averaging around 12 parts per thousand (ppt). This makes the Caspian sea water saltier than freshwater (with a typical salinity of 0.5 ppt) but less salty than the ocean, which has an average salinity of 35 ppt .

The intermediate salinity levels of the Caspian Sea make it a good habitat for species that have adapted to brackish water conditions.

Beneath the surface of the Caspian Sea are an array of fish species, including the Caspian sturgeon, whose roe yields the coveted delicacy known as caviar . Other inhabitants include the Caspian seal, the only aquatic mammal native to the sea , and the Caspian gull and Caspian tern, which find sanctuary along the shores.

Unfortunately, the Caspian Sea's biodiversity faces numerous threats, ranging from overfishing to habitat degradation. The exploitation of energy resources, such as oil and natural gas, has led to environmental concerns, impacting both marine life and coastal ecosystems.

Conservation efforts led by organizations such as the United Nations Environment Programme strive to protect the Caspian's delicate balance and ensure the sustainability of its resources for future generations.

The geopolitical borders of the Caspian Sea have been a source of contention for decades among the Caspian littoral states (the countries along the sea's shores): Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia. Disputes over territorial waters and the delineation of exclusive economic zones are ongoing.

These five countries, each with its own interests and agendas, must regularly navigate complex negotiations over resource extraction, maritime boundaries and environmental conservation as in relation to the world's largest inland body of water.

For example, Iranian patrol boats cruise the south Caspian, asserting Iran's sovereignty over its share of the sea, while Russia maintains a strong presence in the northern Caspian. Naval forces from all five countries maintain a presence on and around the sea.

The Caspian region holds immense economic significance due to its abundant natural resources and strategic location. The countries along the Caspian coastline have invested heavily in capturing these energy resources, leveraging their maritime assets to bolster their economies.

The body of water is renowned for its vast reserves of oil and natural gas , attracting international oil companies and spurring the growth of a thriving energy industry. As a result, offshore oil platforms for drilling dot the horizon in the area.

The Caspian Sea also supports a thriving fishing industry, providing livelihoods for coastal communities. Sturgeon fishing, in particular, has been a traditional practice for centuries.

Additionally, the body of water serves as a crucial maritime artery for trade and transportation, linking Central Asia to global markets and providing access to international shipping routes. Coastal tourism and aquaculture industries have also been important to the region's prosperity.

Sustainable management practices and conservation initiatives will continue to be crucial for safeguarding the Caspian's valuable resources. This will likely require unprecedented collaboration among the Caspian littoral states as well as international stakeholders.
