Biographical notes

Two young watchmakers decided to pool their expertise to create one of the largest watch brands of all time, Audemars Piguet. Jules-Louis Audemars and Edward-Auguste Piguet in 1875 decided to jointly produce complicated watches.

Began production in Le Brassus, a village in Valle de Joux in Geneva, where they are located faithful to its long tradition. From there, they created real wonders of luxury watches and today continue to demand that the spirit of its founders Audemars and Edward Piguet Jules instilled.

When the Royal Oak was launched in 1972, immediately caught the attention of two very good reasons. Its first truly original style, the work of Gérald Genta, the incomparable designer imagined octagonal bezel instead of eight visible screws, and its integrated bracelet. Second, because the Royal Oak was the first high-end sports watch.

The mark gave his Royal Oak an automatic movement with calendar function. He took his innovative form of a porthole on HMS Royal Oak, the ship would also give his name.

Since its launch, the Safari has caused very popular among lovers of watches is one of those watches that everybody likes us no real apparent reason, apart from the overall design. Whether cream-colored dial, black numbers, special crocodile strap is difficult to highlight a feature that makes it so attractive to most people. AP was a great success with this piece, and the market has spoken. Depending on the country, the Offshore has a waiting list of between 3 to 9 months.

Offshore collection, Safari always caught my attention, mainly because of the color and very nice lines. Is this cool brown crocodile strap (Hornback) with the texture of the bone, making it a very euh ... Safari. Like all other Royal Oak, Safari also has the 8 screws (in the original white gold) on the bezel of the watch. When the clock is stopped at certain angles, light plays nicely with the glossy bezel and polished screws. I find myself doing this quite regularly.

The watch is much larger than the original model of Royal Oak, and not only that, but also a bit different in shape. This model and models of sea are known for their rubber parts, like the thick rubber gasket between the bezel and the watch case and protective rubber chronograph push buttons and crown.

The biggest difference I find with it is that Gen. Gen. crown and pushers are not aligned. For not being a dedicated chronograph movement, but a regular movement with a chronograph module further (this method is called in tow).

The grassroots movement is a movement manufactured, which has been used by Audemars Piguet in 2005. The regular automatic Royal Oak Date (ref. 15 300) has the same base movement (caliber 3120), among others. The movement used in Safari (and other offshore chronographs) is known as caliber 3126/3840 with 59 jewels and a power reserve of 55 hours.

The dial-style models in the collection Royal Oak Offshore is decorated with the motif "Mega Tapisserie."

The alligator strap is wearing an elegant Hornback, and the crown and buttons are molded in black rubber.

The screws go back through the clock and the screw (the gene white gold) on the bezel is actually a hex (in the Republic also has an intermediate cylindrical nut). The text on the back of the AP ROO Safari tells you all you need, except for water resistance.

Each Audemars Piguet has a number of mechanism (engraved on the plate, in general, and the wheel) and a number of box is always visible (recorded outside the bottom of the box).

In my case the number of replicates would be: No. 8520:

The production number is a combination of a letter and a few If someone can explain the logic behind these numbers, would be very grateful.

With approximately 800 employees in Switzerland and 200 in foreign countries, Audemars Piguet is capable of producing between 25,000 and 30,000 watches a year. Therefore, there must be something to do with the combination of these two identifiers in the back of the clock.

The dimensions of 44mm x 14.75mm, it may not look good on the wrists of the world, but certainly are comfortable on the wrist.

The strap is made by master craftsman Jacob ( www.jacobstraps.com ), which after discussion accepted the challenge to make this belt.

The strap is made of Cayman (Hornback), is a very unique and because of its difficulty, sometimes, you can only make a leather strap, hence the price, often exclusive and unique pieces, it is very difficult to find two skins with this part, which is bone.

The interior, like the lining, are 1 ª quality cow

To manufacture, Jacob currently uses the belt endlinks China.

Authentic leather maintenance

1 - Watch your belt of spending time in the sun and rain.

2 - be careful not to apply chemicals such as acids and lubricants that can damage the texture and color of your belt.

3 - Keep in mind that this type of skin tends to darken naturally over time gradually, so if you polish with some substance to base oil and grease, the color will darken faster.

4 - If you want to clean you can with a cloth dampened with water and give to any pasta or other neutral oil-based substances, preferably natural or mineral that will not damage the skin and buff with a dry cloth.

This is an awesome review with excellent pictures and perfect accessories/settings. Very interesting and beautiful. Thanks for sharing. Did You do other reviews? Have to take a look, this is sooo good. One thing though: Did I miss the lumeshots?

No you did not - the Safari has no lume anyway.

Just some remarks, fwiw: It is not only the crown and pushers of the gen are not aligned vs. being in line on the rep, plus the cyclops is too far on the right because of the datewheel. From my point of view the most disturbing issue it is the huge difference in thickness. The rep measures 16 mm whilst the gen only has 14,3 mm - so there is a difference of 1,7 mm which is a plus of more than 10%, and that means not only being visible but it also affects the wearing comfort. Personally I don't know if I could live with that issue though, it might be a real show-stopper. OTOH, having this watch properly modded makes it one of the most stunning pieces you can get - however it will cost you approx. $3.000 then...

I don't mind the aesthetic difference so much, but I did find my rep ROO to be unbelievably top heavy. I suppose if I were to get en AP Bands tang buckle that would at least keep the deploy from digging into my wrist all day

This is a truly beautiful watch. I would love to have one, however the weight and top heaviness are a big concern to me. My wrist size is a shade over 7" and the S/S ROO Diver is definitely at the limits of comfort and wearability for me. I believe that come summer with short sleeves it will be OK, but under a shirt and sweater or jacket with cuffs, it's downright uncomfortable. How does the Safari and/or other AP chrono models compare to the Diver as far as wearability? My FC Diver is much more comfortable, I suppose because it's significantly lighter.

Addressing the height issue, what can be done to the rep case if anything to make it slimmer. Would you need to use a genuine movement with case mods?

Impressions about the Rubber-Clad AP Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding 43mm

It's big, it's bold, it's also fairly "empty" but there's something truly cool to it..

Oversized watches are a thing of the past…? Well, on paper yes. For two to three years now, many brands have been scaling down their watches. Timepieces can move back to 40mm or sometimes even less. Yet, some models are made to be big and bold. 1990s and early 2000s Panerai , the IWC Big Pilot (the real one, not the 43mm)… And then there’s the APROO , a.k.a the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore . Born big, continuously bold, highly distinctive and recognizable among thousands. And if you remove the complex display of the classic chronograph, it gives you this new reference 15605SK . Not downsized, just streamlined. But will such a large watch with a simple display work? Won’t the ROO lose some of its appeal in such a sleek form? 

Born in 1993, the Royal Oak Offshore defined a new genre. Just like the classic Royal Oak broke the norm in 1972 as one of the very first luxury sports watches , making steel sexier than gold, the ROO opened the door to the high-end oversized sports watch. The original design, so-called The Beast , has long been praised for its balance and appeal. Despite being a massive watch – at least, back in the days, as now a 42mm x 15mm watch doesn’t seem that big anymore – the design was coherent and distinctive. The ROO has primarily been known as a chronograph watch and even today, a large part of the collection still relies on this function to bring life to the dial.

That being said, the Royal Oak Offshore has long been more than just a chrono. As early as 1989 with the first design ideas, designer Emmanuel Gueit proposed no-chronograph versions. In 1996-97, only three years after the initial shock that the Beast created , Audemars Piguet introduced time-and-date and calendar versions in 30mm and 38mm. But history gave the chronograph such an aura that we tend to forget that these even existed. The ROO remains, in watch enthusiasts’ minds, a watch with pushers on the side. There’s a highly interesting read on AP Chronicles about the origins and evolution of the APROO that I encourage you to look at.

It was only in 2005 and then 2010 that the no-chrono Royal Oak Offshore gained traction, with the respective introduction of the Royal Oak Offshore Scuba and ROO Diver . Once again, there was more going on than just a time-only display here and the recently revised versions of the Royal Oak Offshore Diver still rely on an internal rotating bezel with additional crown at 10 o’clock. Time-only or time-and-date have never been really successful. So why should this new reference 15605SK be any different…? As bizarre as it will seem, it’s all about the size. For once, this new Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding is not a smaller version of the ROO Chrono. It’s as big and bold as the rest of the collection. But does it work…?

The new APROO time-and-date 15605SK

Let’s immediately answer the question above: yes it does work! For all the wrong reasons, at least without much objectivity, this watch is far more appealing than it should be on paper. But sometimes, a design is so strong that it needs certain proportions to be appealing. Previous attempts at making a no-chrono ROO have mostly been focused on reducing the size. This new Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding 15605SK uses the exact same diameter as the new classic chronograph version, the references 26420 – and this isn’t the only connection between these two here.

Yes, we’re looking at an oversized time-and-date watch, with a 43mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 14.4mm. And it has some weight too, as you can imagine. But just like the Big Pilot of IWC needs to be huge, the APROO have long been better with some presence on the wrist. Design-wise, no surprises here. The classic elements are all there, including the thick octagonal bezel with screws, the angular tonneau-shaped case, the brushed surfaces with polished bevels, the integrated lugs and the crown protected by lateral guards. Obviously, it was all about removing the pushers.

One of the things that I love about this new Royal Oak Offshore also brings reservations; the rubber-coated bezel. Visually, it adds contrast and colour. It also is a pretty fascinating tactile experience, with a softness and a texture that’s far different from what we’ve often seen with ceramic bezels. Finally, it adds a matte touch to this watch, bringing some contrast in how the watch reflects light. My reservations… How will it age? What happens if you have a not-so-pleasant encounter with a door frame (we’ve all been there)? Unfortunately, I can’t give you an answer.

What I can tell you is that, despite my relatively small wrists, the 43mm diameter and the fair thickness are exactly what I want this watch to be. The balance of the ROO design requires this heft and sheer size. It is how it’s balanced and coherent. It’s a strong design that works by itself, without much adornments. But it needs this size.

But let’s now talk about the dial. As said, we all have in mind the image of a Royal Oak Offshore with a chronograph display. It’s how it’s been released in 1993 and even today, most of the references are using a chronograph function. What happens when you remove this cluttered layout? With some watches, you end up with an empty dial that has no story to tell. It could have happened here too. Maybe a petite tapisserie pattern would have created this effect. But the choice of having the new Méga Tapisserie pattern counteracts this effect.

Contrary to the Diver models that still use a classic texture, this new Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding 43mm 15605SK relies on a more complex pattern. I know it’s a stamped dial, but there’s a lot going on when you take the time to look at it closely. The classic squares are delimited by pronounced grooves while being interconnected by crosses in relief, and the whole dial has a fine vertical linear texture. From a distance, it remains classic Tapisserie. Come closer and you’ll see a dial that has a lot to say, without being talkative at all (there’s only an AP logo, and no literature otherwise). The lightly smoked effect reinforces the pattern and the date is, for once on such a large watch, positioned right at the edge of the dial.

Surprisingly, Audemars has decided to release only one reference, in this rather subdued grey-blue tone, which is found on the dial, there inner flange, the rubber bezel and the rubber strap. The latter is equipped with a practical quick-exchange system and AP provides this 15605SK with an additional black rubber strap – and you can also select other colours from the brand. Comfort on the wrist…? Surprisingly good considering the size/height/weight. The watch hugs the wrist nicely and, as said, its presence is somehow what gives it its character.

Inside the case there’s the calibre 4302, the new generation of automatic movements by AP, first released in Code 11:59. This modern movement, visible under the sapphire back, beats at 4Hz and stores a comfortable power reserve of 70 hours. It is nicely finished with Côtes de Genève, vertical, circular and sunray brushing, circular graining and polished chamfers, as well as a blackened 22k gold rotor. And its contemporary conception is visible in the date position.

All in all, I’m slightly puzzled by this watch. At first, when it was released, I somehow wanted to not like it, for it to be an oversized time-and-date watch. In general, I’m a strong advocate of smaller watches, and this no-complication 43mm sports watch challenges my usual concepts. Simply put, this sleek and contemporary take on the ROO, combining oversized case with complication-free dial shows how strong and characterful the original design of this collection is. Exactly like an IWC Big Pilot. Downsizing is a great move from the industry, but sometimes things are a bit more complex. This 15605SK is the exception to the rule.

Released as part of the permanent collection, the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding 43mm is priced at EUR 27,300 (incl. taxes) or USD 27,400 (excl. taxes). Far from accessible, yet 15k less than its equivalent chronograph version . After all, it’s an AP and these never come cheap. For more details, please visit www.audemarspiguet.com .

A new movement, quick-change straps, and subtle tweaks further refine this fun-loving diver..

As of this year, the dive-specific Royal Oak is celebrating its sweet sixteenth with a newly updated reference. It spans three new colorways and represents the biggest evolution for the ROO Diver – ROOD? – since the model graduated from being the Offshore Scuba (which originally launched in 2005) to the Royal Oak Offshore Diver. The new 2021 models are rocking a more modern movement, tool-less push-button strap changing, and several small but noteworthy design tweaks.

To tackle the elephant in the room, no, the size has not changed. The new reference 15720ST retains the 42mm sizing of the standard Royal Oak Offshore Diver, along with its uncommon two-crown layout, display caseback, 300 meters of water resistance, and a time/date feature set.

Available from launch in "Trailblazing Khaki," "Navy Blue," and "Pristine Grey," each version has a steel case and comes with a second strap so owners can try the new quick-change system right out of the box. The system is fully integrated into the back of the two short intermediate lugs used to match the strap to the case. Simply press the button and release the strap (see the above photo).

Audemars Piguet plans to offer a range of straps and, alongside the pair that comes with the watch, the brand already has a trio of calfskin leather straps that conform to the new swappable design.

Inside, and forming one of the more major elements of this update, we find Audemars Piguet's modern caliber 4308, a beautifully finished automatic movement with central seconds, a date display, a rate of 4 Hz, and a power reserve of 60 hours. Visible through the Royal Oak Offshore Diver's display caseback, the 4308 also featured a black-finished 22k pink gold winding rotor.

Other updates include changes to the dial, including new markers and an "AP" signature (in gold) rather than the full brand name common to previous iterations of the ROO Diver.

As an exercise in evolving an already successful and qualified design, the new 15720ST looks like a subtle and thoughtful take on the Royal Oak Offshore Diver form. The original black-dial model that was announced in 2010 has long been a dream watch for me, and these new versions look every bit as appealing, especially given the interesting colorways (Pristine Grey for me, please) and the interchangeable straps.

Any of the three can be yours as early as May assuming you've got $25,400 and a good friend at the boutique. But please – pretty please – just promise me that if you get one, you'll also take it for a swim every once in a while. After all, you wouldn't want to be rude with your ROOD, right?

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore collection was introduced in 1993.
