Audio Karate drop “A Show of Hands” + Tour Dates

California’s melodic-punk outfit Audio Karate return with their first studio recordings in almost 20 years! The band reunited in early 2018 following the reissue of their two classic LPs Space Camp  and  Lady Melody . They later released two albums worth of previously unreleased material on Malo  and  ¡Otra!  and got back on the road for festival appearances and playing with the likes of Descendents and other punk legends. The band quickly realized that playing together was an important part of their lives, and they went into the studio to record the new song “A Show of Hands” in 2022, while also re-recording their song “A Monster in Disguise,” adding some much needed production work, making it a much more powerful song. Listen to “A Show of Hands” here .

This limited edition 7-inch EP is being presented by Iodine Recordings, which includes beautiful artwork by Jeff Caudill (Gameface) and photography from the studio and recent tour dates, and was mastered by Jack Shirley (Joyce Manor, Jeff Rosenstock). These songs showcase the power and precision of Audio Karate’s songwriting, which masterfully strikes a balance of hyper-melodic punk rock, emo, and post-hardcore.

It’s out June 30. Pre-order it here .

“‘A Show of Hands’ is our first recording of the modern era, recorded at New Monkey Studio (previously Elliot Smith’s studio) in late 2021,” says guitarist Jason Camacho. “Pandemic stuff had made it so we hadn’t been in a room together in a minute, and we were beyond happy with the outcome. Instantly recognizable as an Audio Karate song, it blends elements of everything one would expect from AK, rolling bass lines, hummable riffs, rusty nail gargled vocals, and catchy hooks.”

Blurring the lines between pop-punk, emo, and post-hardcore for over 20 years,  Audio Karate is comprised of Arturo Barrios, Jason Camacho, Justo Gonzalez, and Gabriel Camacho. Formed in 1999 in Rosemead, California, AK music was borne out of Southern California Mexican-American culture and the band’s love for 80s and 90s punk and metal.  After a 12 year hiatus, they reunited in 2018 for the reissue of their first record,  Space Camp,  on vinyl with Wiretap Records.  In 2019, they released their lost third album,  Malo, to positive critical reviews .  Since reuniting, AK has shared the stage with punk veterans such as Rise Against, Descendents, Unwritten Law, TSOL, as well new school acts such as Spanish Love Songs, Pool Kids, and Tightwire.  AK has garnered a cult-like following amongst fans old and new and is often thought of as "your favorite band's favorite band".

Partnering with Iodine Recordings/Deathwish for 2022's LP ¡OTRA!, and 2023's A Show of Hands EP, AK continues to write and record new music and tour regionally across the US.

Interview: audio karate are getting back to it.

  • August 15, 2023

The same year pop-punk legends Audio Karate wrote and recorded their last studio material, the White Stripes released Elephant , the Great White concert tragedy happened, and Ozzy Osbourne underwent emergency surgery after buzzing around on an ATV at his English estate. So, in other words, it was 20 years ago. Also around that time, Audio Karate disbanded.

“ We’ve grown so much (since then),” vocalist and guitarist Arturo Barrios says. “ One of our guys—I won’t get into specifics—(now) makes really good money and owns a farm. As for me, I ’ m married now.”

Audio Karate also feature bassist Justo Gonzalez, guitarist Jason Camacho, and his cousin, drummer/percussionist Gabriel Camacho and their relationship spans decades.

“ I ’ ve known all (my bandmates) since I was 12,” Barrios says.

The California group convened in early 2018. Initially, they only had a shared interest in helping with vinyl reissues of early Audio Karate albums (and, later, two albums ’ worth of previously unreleased material). While working on reissues—and noticing the band ’ s fanbase grew during Audio Karate ’ s breakup period—they confabbed and agreed fresh studio material was long overdue.

“ We’ve always been big on writing new music, trying to push forward and seeing what we can do,” Barrios says. “ We put our heads together (to write new material). Almost immediately, we were like, “ OK, this is what we sound like approaching our middle-aged years.”

Those unacquainted with the new Audio Karate can hear their “ middle-age sound” on a two-song release that Iodine Recordings issued June 30. It contains a new song, “ A Show of Hands,” as well as a re-recording of the Audio Karate song “ A Monster in Disguise.”

“ We got into a room and said, ‘ Let’s see what we can come up with if we’re all (playing music) together,’” Barrios recalls. “ Back in the day when we wrote records, I would have a melody or a chorus in my head to bring to the table in case we didn’t come up with (any other) ideas. For this, I went in with a blank canvas, intentionally, to see what happens if we just got together and came up with something.”

Barrios shares his astonishment over how quickly “ A Show of Hands” came together. Even after all that downtime, it only took two or three takes for Audio Karate to crack their new tune. It ’ s as if the musicians have been friends since they were kids, or two members of the band are cousins.

What lies ahead for Audio Karate remains unclear. But Barrios alludes to a potential tour that he hopes would finally get the band their just desserts.

“ We didn’t tour heavily (at first) because we only had two records,” Barrios says. “ We know there’s still this huge fanbase for an emo kind of pop punk that we were. And, now coming back together as a band years later, we’ve become better musicians because we actually know what we ’ re doing.”

AUDIO KARATE

Audio Karate comprised childhood friends from Rosemead, CA: vocalist/guitarist Art Barrios, bassist/vocalist Justo Gonzalez, drummer Gabriel Camacho and guitarist Jason Camacho (those last two being cousins). They all bonded over a shared love of both ’80s skatepunk and ’70s metal, and in May 2002, released their debut of furiously catchy SoCal pop-punk via Kung Fu Records titled Space Camp. Tour dates with acts like the Ataris, Tsunami Bomb and the Vandals followed, as did a stretch on the 2004 Warped Tour. Audio Karate’s Warped appearance was well timed, coinciding with the June release of their matured (and very well-received) follow-up, Lady Melody, which was produced by Bill Stevenson (Descendents, ALL, etc). More touring was completed before the guys announced at year’s end that they would be taking a “vacation” for an undisclosed amount of time. Audio Karate resurfaced in the spring of 2006 with the notice that they were working on a new album, in addition to writing the score and soundtrack — music much different than their past efforts — for the Spanish language independent film, Maquillaje. In the meantime, Jason Camacho had also opened his own studio Lady Melody, named after the band’s 2004 album. ~ Corey Apar, Rovi

TIGHTWIRE

Tightwire formerly named “Drones” started as an acoustic project in 2015 by Paul Kettler. Through playing basement shows and opening for bands at The Triple Rock Social Club and Hexagon Kettler had met Parker Thompson and Tane Graves who joined in late 2016 to complete the three piece idea Kettler had intended all along. From 2016 – early 2018 the three had released two EPs on Bloated Kat Records under the name Drones.

In August of 2018 Toby Jeg (Red Scare Industries) had caught wind of the bands latest demos and offered to put out their first full length later that year. Due to a UK band already having the name “Drones” the band was asked by the label to think of a new name for the band which they did not do. Days before announcing the release of their record and the joining of Red Scare the band decided to start thinking of names most of which were rightfully rejected. Finally deciding on Tightwire after a day of listening to Tiltwheel. In an interview they express their dislike for the name stating “we just needed something that wasn’t already taken. Tightwire is a fine name, I guess. Whatever. If bands like Kiss and pull off a shitty band name, we can too.”

In late 2020, Kettler, decided to leave the band to pursue his masters degree, leaving Thompson and Graves to put off finding a new guitar player for at least a year. Procrastination seems to be a Tightwire tradition.

Finally in July of 2021 the band booked and announced shows with a new line-up. Graves taking over lead vocals and bass, Mullaney and Stolp on guitars, and Thompson still on drums.

In a podcast (They Come To America) Graves announces the band would be releasing their second full length album in early 2023 through Redscare featuring himself and Stolp on lead vocals.

HI HO

Hi Ho started as a solo acoustic project of Chicago singer-songwriter Gillian McGhee. Now, Hi Ho is full band, weaving together delicate and heavy elements to create a sound that’s moody, melodic and deeply emotive.

Iodine Recordings

From the suburbs of East Los Angeles, CA, four Mexican American kids came together in 2001 to form the band Audio Karate. Audio Karate developed a unique sound that drew from their many influences such as Descendents and Jawbreaker. Their unique mix of melodic and emotional punk rock helped them develop a big fan base and quickly caught the attention of Kung Fu records, who signed them in 2001 alongside bands like Blink-182 and Tsunami Bomb. Audio Karate were far from being just another “punk” band, and their blend of melodies and hooks set them apart, making it difficult to place them in any one genre. The band has mastered the art of writing infectiously catchy songs with deeply personal lyrics, while still remaining upbeat and fun.

Audio Karate spent the early 2000s touring heavily and shared stages with bands like Blink-182, NOFX, The Ataris, Face to Face, and had many Van’s Warped Tour appearances. Their first studio album “Space Camp” was met with much acclaim from critics and fans, and the band was often featured on MTV and Fuse TV. Their follow up album “Lady Melody” was produced by Bill Stevenson of the Descendents. The record straddled pop-punk convention and technical oddity, with unique key changes and riffs that seemed to sound “wrong” while sounding gloriously right. Even Stevenson wondered how they did it, marveling at times during their recording sessions: “Technically, this shouldn’t work.”

Audio Karate went on a long Hiatus in 2006 and returned in 2018 to record their third album “Malo” for Wiretap Records and support their idols, Descendents, on a U.S. tour. Shortly after their return, the band began working with Iodine Recordings for anther release. “¡OTRA!” is a collection of their rare and unreleased material that spans the history of the band and feature works produced by Bill Stevenson (Descendents/ALL) and Trever Keith (Face to Face). Featuring guest vocals by Agent M / Emily Whitehurst of Tsunami Bomb and new original artwork by Chris Shary (Descendents/Teenage Bottlerocket). “¡OTRA!” contains some of Audio Karate’s best songs that have never been released on vinyl. A soon to be essential volume for pop-punk and emo fans’ collections.

“Well crafted melodic-punk and the passion in the vocals is undeniably infectious. Bill Stevenson once again has produced a gem of a record!” - Punk News
