Riding the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is one of the best ways to chase away your jetlag and get an overview of the city of Bangkok . It’s also a great way to reach some of the city’s best attractions. Thing is, if you are a first-time visitor to Bangkok and not sure of the lay of the land it’s hard to make best use of this Bangkok Tourist boat, but don’t worry, we have you covered!

Note: This guide was based on the route operating at the beginning of 2023. In previous years, the hop off boat ran for longer hours and stopped at different piers, but things changed significantly when it restarted after the pandemic. It may also change from time to time because of the renovations currently being undertaken at over 20 piers along the river this year.

How does the Chao Phraya Hop on Hop off ferry work?

How much does chao phraya tourist boat cost, where does the chao phraya tourist boat stop, chao phraya stops & recommended attractions, a one day itinerary using the bangkok hoho boat., tips for riding the tourist hoho boat in bangkok.

Snaking through the centre of Bangkok the Chao Phraya twists and turns past some of Bangkok’s most iconic buildings. Using the hop on hop off tourist boats to explore the city has many benefits over the public express boats:

  • You avoid the notorious city traffic
  • You don’t have to negotiate with tuk-tuk drivers
  • There is usually a cool breeze out on the water
  • Many landmarks are within a few minutes’ walk of the stops
  • The ticket price is wallet friendly
  • It only stops at piers that have attractions tourist will be interested in
  • The boats, usually catamarans, offer a smoother ride
  • They are easier to board especially for those with small kids, prams, older adults and wheelchair users
  • It’s operated by a team of friendly staff happy to help suggest stops to suit your interests.
  • There is English and Thai commentary, so you learn more about the city as you go.

I think the number one reason to choose the tourist boat over the local express boats is that the huge open top deck and smooth ride provides the perfect conditions for taking photos.

Bangkok Express Boat

With 5 spacious double decker boats serving 11 piers, the Chao Phraya HOHO offers two types of tickets: a full day regular hop on hop off service and a ticket allowing you to ride one length of the tour or to jump off at any of the point-to-point stops.

This wheelchair accessible service runs from Sathon Pier, also known as Central Pier, to Phra Arthit Pier near Khao San Road. It offers regular 10 stops plus late afternoon stops at Asiatique.

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat

If you are starting at Sathorn Pier, it’s easy to get confused by the different ticket sellers. Just look for signs that say Chao Phraya tourist boat. If you are worried about this, you can pre-purchase your ticket.

There are plenty of options for buying your tourist boat ticket in Bangkok. It depends on what suits you. You can pick it up at any of the following places:

  • At any of the piers that are official stops
  • On the boat itself
  • Online via the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat official site
  • On Get Your Guide or Klook

When you get your ticket or exchange your booking voucher, they give you a brochure which shows all the stops on a map and gives some basic information on what to see at each. It’s very general, but it helps you orientate yourself.

There are two types of tickets available:

  • A single ride without hopping off will cost you 30TBH
  • A day pass costs 150TBH and is valid from 8.30am to 7.15pm (operating times vary – this is current as of Jan 23).

Note:  If you just want to go to one place, then it is cheaper to ride the regular express boat.

There are currently 11 official stops, but one is closed for renovations and one only opens in the late afternoon, leaving 9 for you to visit with your day pass.

Sathon Pier Bangkok

The stops that are open as of 30/12/22 include:

  • Asiatique (first stop 4:10pm)
  • Sathorn Pier (BTS Taksin)
  • IconSiam Pier
  • N5 Ratchawongse Pier
  • Wat Arun Pier

Rajini Pier

  • N9 Tha Chang pier
  • Tha Maharaj Pier
  • N11 Prannok Pier
  • N13 Phra Arthit Pier

With all these stops to choose from, it’s hard to know which places to get off and explore. It can also be hard to tell from the riverfront what’s hiding in the streets behind. Therefore, we think to make the most of your time on the tourist boat you should plan your day a little.

For those who like an early start, the first boat leaves from Phra Athit Road at 8.30am or from Sathon at 9am

So first let’s look at what there is to see at each stop and how far the places are from the piers. If you prefer, you can choose from this list to plan your own day according to your interests.

Unless you are short of time, we highly recommend you purchase a day pass and allow at least half a day to make the most of your ticket. You could easily spend the whole day riding the boat and doing the walks we recommend below. Click on any of the maps to open them in Google maps and save them to your device.

Sathorn Pier- aka Central Pier

There are not so many well-known sites around Sathorn Pier, however if you are a lover of street art and fun bars there are a few spots you might want to check out

Sathon Canal Art – not to be confused with the Ong Ang Canal art this is a much less well-known spot that features the work of both local and international graffiti artists. With 900m of walls to see, it’s worth the short walk from the pier for art lovers.

Sathon Canal Art

Bars – At opposite ends of the spectrum are two bars that we think you might enjoy. The legendary and infamous Lebua Sky Bar and the very local and much loved by those who have visited Jack’s Bar. These two spots could not be any further apart on both budget and decor, but they both offer superb views! Jacks opens at 11am and Sky Bar at 5pm.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

Ratchawongse- Chinatown

It is easy to spend a couple of hours exploring the sites around Rachanwongse Pier. This is a great stop for the early afternoon or as your last stop if you plan to have dinner in the area.

  • Chinatown Gate – at Odeon traffic circle, this gate marks the beginning of Chinatown, which stretches 1.5km along Yaowarat Road.
  • Yaowarat Road – the beating heart of Chinatown is filled with street vendors, gold shops and traffic! Best seen in the early morning when locals are grabbing breakfast before you start your day cruising or after 4pm.

Wat Traimit in Chinatown Home of the golden buddha

  • Wat Traimit Temple – Home of the world’s most valuable pure gold Buddha. Thought to date back to the late 1700s, it was discovered in Ayutthaya covered in clay – probably the reason it has survived so long.
  • Chinatown Heritage Museum – Learn about the migration of the Chinese to Thailand and how Yaowarat became their home.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

  • Street art mural by Belgian artist ROA – You can see this mural of two elephants from the boat but also walk past on your way to Chinatown from the pier.
  • Sampeng Market – just 600m from the stop this market is very popular with locals. It has everything you can imagine and more. It’s open all day from 7am till late afternoon.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

You could cover all these spots on foot on an easy 3km round trip. Follow this map and allow 2 hours if you plan on visiting inside any of the site – 60 minutes just for the stroll.

A finalist in the World’s Best Shopping Centre awards ICONSIAM is no ordinary shopping centre. For a start, it’s huge, with over 7000 shops and 100 restaurants across eight floors.

From the floating market food stalls to high-end luxury goods and international brand name stores, there is enough here to keep a shopper happy for an entire day. Even if you don’t like shopping all that much, it’s an impressive complex.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

Inside ICONSIAM are dining options for any budget and taste ranging from street food, celebrity chef restaurants like Blue by Alain Ducasse and local 3 Michelin Star winners. There is a rooftop Starbucks with fantastic views and a free evening light and sound fountain show.

There is not a huge amount to see surrounding ICONSIAM and personally I would probably leave this for today and take the free boat on another day. Alternatively, finish the day here and stay for dinner.

Two sites you may choose to visit nearby are the Jam Factory and a waterfront bar/ restaurant called Be My Guest

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

This pier reopened in Jan 2023 after a huge renovation. The new floating dock they have installed makes this stop wheelchair accessible and is a good sign for things to come across the rest of the Bangkok ferry system.

From Rajini Pier is also only 50 meters from the Sanam Chai MRT Station, so if you are staying nearing an MRT stop in Bangkok this could be the best place to begin your HOHO journey.

This is the best stop to choose if you want to visit the Pak Khlong Talat flower market or the Museum of Siam (closed Monday).

Garlands at the Bangkok Flower market

There is a small ferry service that stops at the next pier, At Sadang Pier, that will take you across the river to the famous Santa Cruz Portuguese Catholic church. Note the church is not always open so check before you visit.

This is also a smart ferry stop so you can jump on one of these if you miss the HOHO boat and don’t want to wait for the next one. Tickets are only 20TBH.

Wat Arun, the Temple of Dawn, is one of the best known sites in Bangkok. Its 70m Khmer-style tower or prang is visible across the city and is especially beautiful at night or in the very early morning.

Wat Arun Detail Bangkok River

Decorated in stunning glass and porcelain mosaics, you can climb the steep steps and look out over the city or just pose for photos like most visitors. Along with the tower are a couple of other buildings you can explore, including the ordination hall with its golden buddha.

The gardens are quite beautiful with bonsai and topiary. You can also choose to dress up in traditional clothes and take photos around the temple and the gardens.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

The dress code is strictly enforced, so be sure to cover your shoulders and knees. Leggings are not accepted either.

The full name of this stunning temple is Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchawaramahawihan

I would make this my first stop of the day and allow just 30 minutes – there is not enough to do for one hour unless you are very interested in temples, so try not to miss the next boat. The benefit of visiting early is climbing the steep stairs before the heat sets in! The temple opens at 8am and closes at 6pm.

Tha Tien Pier

While this wharf is under renovation, you can reach Wat Pho (The reclining Buddha) which is its key attraction by walking from Tha Chang the next stop, the walk will take you about 10 mins (850m).

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

Tha Chang Pier

This is the stop for the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). An additional site you might like to add to your itinerary is the Queen Sirikit Museum of textiles.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

I recommend you make this your first or second stop – it’s an enormous site and in the heat of the middle of the day can be quite overwhelming. It also closes at 3:30pm, so the afternoons get really busy. Allow at least an hour – and much longer if you have a special interest in temples and Buddhism.

Visiting the Grand Palace can be a stressful experience. There are scammers and touts trying to get your attention and perhaps give you false information (the palace is closed or you must have a guide to enter). It pays to do a little reading or research before you get there.

One way to avoid much of the drama is to pre purchase your tickets. Tickets are 500tbh and you can pay with cash or card.

Easy walk from Tha Chang Pier

Tha Maharaj Pier

Home of a riverside shopping centre and plenty of restaurants, Tha Maharaj Pier is another good choice for when you are hungry. Head up to the second floor for good views out over the river.

Also only 10 minutes walk way is the National Museum. It’s opened Wednesday to Sunday from 9am-4pm and entry is approx 200TBH for foreigners.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

Prannok Pier

Not an essential stop and if you only have a day or this is your first time I would stay on the boat as you have plenty to see. If you have visited Bangkok before and want to see something very local then jump off for an hour. Previously known as Wang Lang Pier this stop has 3 areas of interest for visitors to Bangkok

Jump off here for Wang Lang Market only 300m from the pier. Wang Lang is a wet and dry market popular with staff from the nearby hospital, and for good reason, there is some really great food here. Not set up for tourists, this is an everyday market. Visit between 10 and noon 2-3 if you can. Lunchtime crowds can be hectic!

Another popular spot for second time visitors perhaps is the Siriraj Medical Museum

An interesting temple in this area is Wat Rakhang Kositaram Woramahawihan (500m) or the Temple of Five Bells.

Walks from Prannok Pier Bangkok

Phra Arthit Pier

With tree-lined streets, trendy boutiques and cafes and only 10 mins or 800m to Khao San Road Phra Arthit is another popular stop.  Best visited in the afternoon or evening when activity picks up. This is another good stop to finish on with plenty of nightlife nearby.

Two key sites within walking distance are:

  • National Art Gallery (600m)
  • Wat Saket Golden Mount Temple

Golden Mount Temple Bangkok

Other place you might like to check out, especially if you are a repeat visitor and have seen the main sites include:

  • Santiphap Park – Santiphap translates as peace and this park features a dove sculpture based on a drawing by Pablo Picasso near its central pond.
  • Phra Sumen Fort – one of the original forts that guarded the old city.
  • Banglamphu clothing market – a popular market with locals

If you are up for a bigger walk you can jump off at Ratchawong (Chinatown) and see those sites then walk along Ong Ang and past the famous restaurant Jay Fai (book if you want to eat here) then visit the Golden Mount Temple before making your way back to Phra Athit to rejoin the ferry.

bangkok river cruise hop on hop off

After using the Chao Phraya Tourist boat several times when visiting Bangkok and we think this itinerary works well for first-time visitors to the city.

1 . We suggest you begin at Sathaon Pier, if you are coming via BTS from other parts of the city. If you are staying nearer to another stop, obviously start there! Ride to Tha Chang Pier to visit the Grand Palace and Temple of the Emerald Buddha before it gets too hot.

2 . Follow this by returning to the boat and heading to Wat Arun. Allow 30 minutes to view the site or an hour if you plan on renting a traditional outfit for a photo shoot.

3 . You are likely thinking about food by now. A Thai person certainly would be 😉 Decide which stop you would like to have lunch at.

  • Icon Siam might appeal if the weather is not ideal, or the heat is getting to you. Their famous floating market food court on the ground floor or one of the many the restaurants on the upper floors makes a great place to take a break.
  • Sathorn works too. If you want a more local experience. Head to Jacks Bar, which is right on the riverfront. Alternatively, check out the food court at Robertson’s Department store near the pier. After lunch, you could wander past the Sathorn Canal murals a short walk away.
  • Finally, Tha Maharaj offers waterfront dining with river views.

4. For your final bit of exploring today of the day pick one of the following – or perhaps both if you have made good time.

  • After lunch you might like to visit the Flower Market from Rajini Pier
  • Still got plenty in the tank? We recommend you get off the ferry at Phra Athit and take our suggested walk to Chinatown, stopping at the Golden Mount Temple and Ong Ang Canal along the way.

5. This itinerary will see you out of time or energy by 5pm just when Chinatown comes alive. If you have already visited Chinatown, jump back on the ferry and head to Asiatique for the night market and plenty more food!

Asiatique Bangkok wheel

  • If you miss your ferry, don’t feel you need to wait 30 minutes for the next one.
  • Ride the top deck early in the morning and take your river photos before the midday heat hits. Also, by later in the day, the boat is back to being busy since visitor numbers to Bangkok have risen again.
  • The boat stops at all piers but not for long, so be ready on the lower level to exit before you reach the stop you need.
  • Don’t try to do all the suggested walks above in one day. Just pick a couple that grab your interest and allow time to really enjoy them rather than rushing about trying to see it all.

We hope this helps you plan a really fun day out using the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat to explore more of Bangkok.

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat Bangkok – Hop On Hop Off Review

If you are visiting Bangkok, then you will be searching for the easiest and best ways to get around. Being such a big city, it can be daunting at first. The traffic gets terrible at times, and taxi’s and Tuk Tuk’s become expensive. The MRT doesn’t run everywhere, and buses can be hot and sweaty. The good news is that the Chao Phraya River runs right through the middle of the city, and you can get easy access to most of Bangkok’s most popular landmarks on the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat.

About chao phraya tourist boat, what can you see from chao phraya tourist boat, how much does chao phraya tourist boat cost, where to buy tickets, how often can you hop on hop off, what times does it run, and how often.

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is a Hop on Hop off boat that runs along the river through Bangkok. Unlike the ferries that also service the river, the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat stops at 9 different piers. This allows passengers to see many different sights throughout the day. All for the one price.

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat up top

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is the original Hop on Hop off Boat servicing Bangkok. It has been in service since 2012, and has operated continuously ever since, only shutting down briefly during Covid-19. There are 5 boats in the fleet, plowing up and down the river at a swift rate of knots, ferrying over 3000 passengers a day during the peak times.

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is a wonderful Hop on Hop off option that works almost exactly the same as a Hop on Hop off bus works in most cities. You simply buy a day ticket, and get on and off as many times as you want.

See things that can only be seen from the river

But where does it go? What can you see? These are questions that I was asking before I used it the first time as well. Fortunately, one thing that this boat does that many other public transport options don’t do, is give you a handy map with not just the names of the stops, but indications of what attractions are accessible from each of them. It’s not exactly perfect, but is extremely helpful!

Stay on for sunset

The other thing I really liked about this boat, was that you can get to see some things that you wouldn’t normally see. Things such as the Riverside Naval institute, the riverside local housing, or even just passing underneath the bridges that span the river. We also saw a pretty special sunset one evening on the way back from Asiatique! Take a seat on the upper level and really soak in the sun and the views.

The views are amazing

So here is a list of stops (piers) on the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, and the places you can expect to visit from each of them.

  • Phra Arthit – The stop for The Art Gallery of Ban Chao Phraya, and also Khao San Road – the most popular nightlife destination in Bangkok.
  • Thonburi Railway Station – This stop has not been in use recently due to renovations, and instead the boat stops at nearby Wang Lang Market. This is great to see a local market with local prices. (one of my favorite markets!)
  • Tha Maharaj – Tha Maharaj is a small riverside but very chic shopping centre with great restaurants and shops. It is also the best stop for The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. You can also walk from the Palace to Wat Pho, which is right next door, and then catch the normal ferry across the river to Wat Arun, where you will board the Hop on Hop off again. From Tha Maharaj you can also visit the Cannon Museum.
  • Wat Arun – One of the most famous temples in Bangkok, also known as “The Temple of Dawn” is a not-to-be-missed experience. You can also catch the public ferry straight across the river to Wat Pho – the Temple of the Reclining Buddha.
  • Pak Klong Taladd – Jump off here for the best Flower Market in Bangkok, and also if you want to change to the MRT.
  • Ratchawongse – Chinatown! Get off here for access to everything that Chinatown has to offer. There is also the Sampheng Market if you are looking for a bargain.
  • LHONG 1919 – This pier is still on the timetable, but has been out of service for some time.
  • ICONSIAM – This incredible Shopping Centre really took me by surprise. Featuring all the luxury brands that you can think of, it is the “food court” downstairs that held me enthralled for a couple of hours. It has to be seen to be believed!
  • Sathorn (BTS Saphan Taksin) – Jump off here for the beautiful Assumption Cathedral, and Wat Yannawa. It is also the last stop on the south leg before the Asiatique stops open up late in the afternoon.
  • Asiatique – A great riverside centre with large ferris wheel, great boutique markets and some wonderful restaurants. Just wandering around Asiatique is an experience, with the architecture of the buildings featuring the styles from 1907 to 1947.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most common questions in relation to the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat.

There are a couple of different ways to ride the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat. You can buy an all day pass that allows you to ride the boat all day long, or you can buy a single ticket. Prices at time of writing are:

  • Single ride ticket – 30 Baht.
  • All day unlimited Hop on Hop off Ticket – 150 Baht

On Board the Hop on Hop off boat

There are several ways to buy your tickets for the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, and each way has a different appeal. Personally, I just buy mine on the day. But if you don’t have enough Baht, want to book in advance, or perhaps save money for a group or family, then one of the following options might suit you better.

  • Buy on the day at the pier. The ticket office is easy to find and staff very helpful.
  • Buy online. Sometimes there are discounts on the website for families and small groups. Check THIS link.
  • Order online from GetYourGuide to ensure your tickets in advance. Check THIS link.

the Ticket office

A single ticket may seem a waste for some when it comes to a Hop on Hop off boat. But consider the fact that it could cost a LOT of money fighting traffic in a taxi or Tuk Tuk, and a lot less to travel by river if you are only going to one place. Then it is definitely worth it!

If you buy the all day pass, you can Hop on and Hop off as many times as you like. There are 9 piers up and down the length of the river that the boats run, so it is totally up to you when you get on and get off. Plus, you can take a boat in one direction, and then back in the other if you wish. Just try to organize it as best you can in advance, to maximize your time.

Of course, it is also really fun to get on the boat and then just jump off when you see something interesting. This is what I did the very first time that I rode the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat, as I really didn’t have any idea what to expect!

Map of the stops on Chao Phraya Tourist Boat

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat runs from 9am to 5.30pm. Prior to Covid-19, they ran until 8.30pm, but have scaled it back to 5.30pm. At this stage there is no indication that the original timetable will return.

Note that the Boat does not service the Asiatique stop (the last stop on river to the south) until late in the afternoon. The 330pm boat is the first that will take you there, as Asiatique is mostly closed during the day and opens in the late afternoon.

Chao Phraya Tourist Boat Timetable

Take note that not all stops might be open! The last time I rode the ferry, 3 stops were closed for maintenance. This can happen, so check before you go, just in case you have to get off at the next stop along the way.

The Chao Phraya Tourist Boat is a great way to see Bangkok . If you are staying near, or within reach of the river, then it will certainly help you tick off the attractions along the river without the need to fight traffic. It will also help avoid the Tuk Tuk Scams that happen around the Grand Palace area, and give you an easy way to get in and out of those crowded areas around the major temples.

Hop on Hop off boat tour in Bangkok

27 aug hop on hop off boat tour in bangkok.

With the insane amount of travellers visiting Bangkok every year, here is an important question. How to travel inside Bangkok?

Of course, you can take a taxi or a metro! Both of them are affordable and comfortable in Bangkok. But they probably aren’t the most fun way to do it.

Tours, buses and tuk-tuk can also assist you in your day trips. But one of my favourite ways of travelling inside Bangkok is using waterways. And Bangkok, with its brilliant hospitality system, has made it super easy for travellers to experience it.

Here I am talking about a Hop On Hop Off Boat tour across Chao Phraya River connecting the top places to see in Bangkok.

Hop On Hop Off Boat Route

Why take a Hop on Hop off boat

You can take a hop on hop off boat tour because the tour connects the best places to see in Bangkok like The Grand Palace, Wat Pho, Wat Arun and more. The must-see places, especially if it is your first trip to Bangkok.

On top of that, you don’t need to buy separate tickets every time you board. Nor do you need to change several vehicles. Most of the attractions are located at a walking distance to the pier.

But most of all, I think it’s fun. You can always spot a hop-on-hop-off bus in most cities. But rarely do you chance upon a Hop On Hop Off Boat.

Thonburi Palace from Chao Phraya Tourist Boat

Hop on Hop off boat Route Map

To get a fair idea, refer to this map.

Hop On Hop Off Boat Route on Guidebook

The Hop On Hop Off Boat tour starts from Sathorn pier (next to Saphan Taksin BTS Station) and stops at 9 destinations. It ends at Phra Arthit Pier (near Khao San Road). You can also do it from the opposite direction (that is from Phra Arthit to Sathorn). You can board the boat or get down at any destination.

At some points, there are more tourist attractions on the opposite side of the river too. However, the boat stops only on one side. You will need to take a smaller boat from an adjacent pier to cross over the river that costs between 3-5THB.

Ferry that only connects piers on the opposite sides.

Here is the list of all the stops and the tourist attraction of Hop on Hop off boat:

1. Asiatique – Asiatique, the Riverfront Mall (route starts at 5 pm)

2. Sathorn Pier – Wat Yannawa

3. ICONSIAM – Iconsiam Mall

4. Lhong 1919

5. Ratchawongsee – Chinatown, Wat Mangkon Kamalawat

6. Pakklong Taladd – Yodipman Flower Market

7. Wat Arun – Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn), Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) on the other side

8. Tha Chang – The Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha)

9. Tha Maharaj – Tha Maharaj Shopping Complex

10. Thonburi Railway Station – Museum of Royal Barges, Siriraj Medical Museum, Wang Lang Market

11. Phra Arthit – Khaosan Road

Hop on Hop off boat types

If you have been looking up the waterways of Bangkok, understanding it can get confusing. There are many types of services that run across the Chao Phraya River.

Broadly they are characterized by different colour flag boats. There are Orange, Green, Yellow and No Flag Boat. These boats run on different routes for daily passengers mostly during the weekdays. Only Orange flag boats run on weekends.

However, in this case, we are talking only about Blue Flag boats. They are exclusively a part of Chao Phraya Tourist Boat Co. Ltd. These boats specifically cater to tourists and the routes and systems are designed for sightseeing. You can identify them by their White and Blue colour with Hop On Hop Off Boat written on them.

Hop On Hop Off Boat

Hop on Hop off boat ticket

The ticket price for a full-day hop on hop off tour with unlimited rides is 180 THB. The ticket price from a single journey from any point to another one is 50THB. Children under 90 cm of height do not need a ticket. These are applicable for both Thai and foreign nationals.

You can buy a ticket at any of the counters on all piers of the above-mentioned stops. All piers have a kiosk right next to the entrance of the pier. There is always someone to help you out.

You can also buy the ticket online beforehand on travel aggregators or their official website. You need to exchange the e-ticket with a paper ticket at the counter next to the pier before boarding.

How to take a Hop on Hop off Boat

If you want to do it from end to end, you can start at either point at Phra Arthit Pier (If you are around Khaosan) or Sathorn Pier. You can take a taxi directly to the pier and look for the counter. The guides will assist you from there.

We started at Sathorn Pier which is closer to downtown Siam via BTS. Sathorn Pier is located right next to Saphan Taksin BTS Station (On Dark Green Line). Just get down at Exit 2 and keep walking to your left side.

Exit 2 at Saphan Taksin BTS Station towards Sathorn Pier

If you want to board from any other pier, follow the same drill. However, once you are on the pier or on board someone with check the station you want to get down at. If there are no passengers boarding or getting down at a station, the ferry may not stop at all.

Here is a map of the closest metro station to each point.

Timings from Phra Arthit – Sathorn: 9.30 to 20.30.

The boat extends their tour to Asiatique from 16:00 – 20:30 (From Phra Arthit) and from 16:30 – 21:00 (From Sathorn Pier).

A boat leaves every pier every 30 minutes.

The boats run on specific time schedules. So once you get off and take your time to explore the area nearby, you need to note the time of the next ferry that will come along.

You can also find the timetable on the guidebook that you get when buying the ticket at the counter. The boats stop only if you are already on the pier and only till the time you get on it. They don’t wait on the pier.

Hop on Hop off Boat Stops

Here is what you can do at each stop:

1. Asiatique

Asiatique Riverfront: Asiatique Riverfront is the biggest outdoor mall in Bangkok. Built on the docks of the renovated warehouses of East Asiatic Company, it is a blend of both modern and colonial times. The mall is huge with most areas outdoors.

The setup range from everyday flea markets selling cheap souvenirs to upscale branded shops selling luxury bags and watches. A tram connects different parts of the mall. You can also watch a puppet show, a cabaret show and even Muay Thai on the premises.

Besides, taking a stroll alongside the Chao Phraya River or riding the Ferris wheel sums up a great evening. You can only visit the Asiatique after 4 pm.

Asiatique waterfront Bangkok tourist attractions

2. Sathorn Pier

Wat Yannawa: Just half a kilometre away from Sathorn Pier is Wat Yannawa, a temple built more than 240 years ago. This temple from the Ayutthaya period was built under the reign of King Rama III. The temple front is built in the shape of a boat a Chinese junk ship that used to frequent the harbours of Thailand due to strong trade relationships.

However, if you are short on time, you can probably skip this one.

Wat Yannawa, Bangkok

3. ICONSIAM

Iconsiam: Iconsiam is the newest, dazzling hi-end mall in the town. This place has the best brands from around the world, a 3-Michelin star restaurant and more than 100 famous restaurants. Packed with luxury brands, I was literally swept off my feet at some places.

The most striking area is the 400m multimedia, water-and-fire show along the stretch of Chao Phraya River. Some are of the ground floor has been converted into a traditional Thai style floating market with two-storeyed teakwood houses and wooden boats on small canals. This place is definitely worth a stop.

Iconsiam Mall

Lhong 1919:  Lhong 1919 is a recent tourist attraction that is a blend of a traditional Chinese mansion and renovated warehouses as modern galleries. The place was an old Chinese port that was used to trade with British Malay, Mainland China and Hong Kong. A shrine of Mazu (A Chinese sea goddess) sits in the middle.

The mansion was then converted into an art gallery paired with several nearby buildings. You can now enjoy browsing through artworks of local artists, order food in the surrounding cafes or attend exhibitions that are organised here. Kind of a laidback relaxed place.

Lhong 1919

5. Ratchawongsee

Ratchawongsee is the pier right next to Chinatown, the busiest area of Bangkok. You can love it or you can hate it.

Yaowarat: Yaowarat Road, the centre point of Chinatown is also a major trade hub. Expect to find bright red Chinese lanterns, shouting vendors with a cart full of oriental dishes, roasting chestnuts, shops full of herbs, spices and teas and large looming shops of gold jewellery.

Yaowarat Road, Chinatown, Bangkok

Wat Mangkorn: One of the most popular Chinese shrines, Wat Mangkon is located here. Wat Mangkon Kamalawat, also known as Wat Leng Ni Yi was built 147 years ago. The shrine is open for everyone. As you enter the temple, the smell of incense will hit you in the face. You can observe the locals paying their respects to the numerous gods inside the shrine.

6. Pakklong Taladd

Yodipman Flower Market: The boat halts at the Pakklong Taladd which is right next to Yodipman Flower Market. It is an indoor market with a large number of wholesale vendors selling tropical flowers. These are probably shipped out across the country and even exported from here. I wouldn’t say that you will see a lot of exotic varieties of flowers. Most of them are the regulars that you will see across Thailand, but the scale is fascinating.

Here is a decorative flower class that takes you around the market and provides detailed information about local flowers and the community in the area.

Yodipman Flower Market

Museum Siam: If you walk a little, you can also visit Museum Siam. This museum is a part of the initiative of ‘Discovery museum’ concept of Thailand. Its objective is to get people to learn about the local culture using modern technology and multimedia. I personally think that it is one of the most creative and fun museums I have ever been to. Although take some time out to visit this one.

Museum Siam Entrance

7. Wat Arun Pier

Wat Arun: You can guess, what is waiting for you here as you near the pier. The tall tower of Wat Arun looms above you from a distance. Wat Arun also called as ‘the temple of the Dawn’ is one of the most important shrines of Thailand that has also become a cultural icon of the country.

It was built, rebuilt and renovated across several decades by several rulers of the Chakri Dynasty to what stands now. The premises are usually quiet and serene if there aren’t too many people around. There is also a temple right next to it if you want to spend more time here.

Wat Arun as seen from close

Wat Pho: Wat Pho, also known as ‘the temple of the Reclining Buddha’ is another important temple of Thailand. Located right on the opposite side of Wat Arun, Wat Pho is a must-visit if you haven’t been here already. The striking gold statue of Buddha lying down near his time of Parinirvana (final journey to death) is the centre of attention.

Wat Pho was also an educational institute. The inscriptures at this place are registered with Memory of the World Programme by UNESCO. Wat Pho offers four courses in Thai Pharmacy, Thai Medical Practice, Midwifery and Thai Massage. A traditional Massage is also a unique and special experience here.

Statue of Reclining Buddha inside Wat Pho

8. Tha Chang

The Royal Palace: Tha Chang is the gateway to the Royal Palace. The Royal Palace definitely tops the chart of the Best Places to see in Bangkok, without a doubt. After all, it is the living proof of all the wealth, culture and prosperity of the nation.

The Royal Palace is a set of several buildings inside the premises. It comprises of the assembly halls, coronation hall, the royal residence, numerous offices and the most important temple in Thailand, Wat Phra Kaew or The Temple of the Emerald Buddha. A recent addition to the place is the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles that you must not miss either.

However, there are some strict rules and odd timings on visiting the place. Make sure you are aware of them before you plan your visit.

The Grand Palace, Bangkok

9. Tha Maharaj

Tha Maharaj: If you haven’t realised till now, not a lot of local visit the usual touristy places that we have been talking about till now. This is more like the type of place where the young locals like to hang around.

Tha Maharaj is a sort of renovated shopping complex with boutique shops, hip cafes and outdoor seating. A lot of sculptures and 3D art has been done to bring life to this place and has been very successful with the local crowd. A good stop for a meal perhaps. On the first and the second floor is also somewhat gloomy-looking amulet market.

Tha Maharaj

10. Thonburi Railway Station

Siriraj Medical Museum: This is the way to two museums in the area that people rarely visit. One of them is the Siriraj Medical Museum which is right next to the pier. The museum is a collection of human body parts, skeletons and even mummified bodies. Fetuses of unborn children and headless criminals are also part of the collection. While it can be grotesque to hear, kids seem to enjoy the information.

Bangkok Forensic Museum

Museum of the Royal Barges: The other one is the Museum of the Royal Barges for which you will need to take a cab. It is a sight to witness the procession of the royal barges that take place once in several years. But you can see the royal fleet of boats for yourself here. It is the dock where the gorgeous gold-coloured boats carved in wood sit during the time they are not in need.

Royal Barges in Thailand

11. Phra Arthit

Khaosan Road: This will conclude the trip if you are not starting here. This is near Khaosan Road, a comfortable destination for the backpackers living in the area. If you aren’t then you must party at least once in Khaosan Road. If you do not like loud music, you can also head to a parallel road with great restaurants, bars and foot massage parlours.

What to wear on your trip

There aren’t any restrictions when it comes to what to wear on your trip. However, if you plan to visit any of the temples in the above list, you will need to take care of what you wear.

For most temples, all you need is your knees and shoulders to be covered for both males and females. You can always use a scarf to do that. In most tourist areas, there are even shops near the entrance that sells streetwear that are both comfortable and affordable.

But if you are planning to visit the Grand Palace as well, make sure your clothes aren’t torn, too tight or too revealing. Read more about it on our guide to the Grand Palace.

If you are travelling to South-East Asia for the first time, check out our guide on What to Pack for South-East Asia .

Other Experiences like this

Bangkok is also called ‘Venice of the East’. That is because of the intricate web of thousands of canals that runs across the city. Since bus, metro and taxis have taken over, travelling via canals has taken a backseat.

If you want to experience the age-old way of travelling using the canals, you will need a smaller boat. Some boat services run of selected routes but you need to plan your trip yourself. If you want to do it as a tourist, hiring a personal longtail boat is the best option.

A great experience using a long tail boat will be travelling towards the Thonburi side of the city all the way up to Taling Chan Floating Market and back. Here are some experiences to check out.
