There are plenty of options to choose from, but we’ve narrowed it down to 10 of the best secluded, underrated beach locations in the United States .

From isolated sandy stretches in North Carolina to hidden spots on California ’s rugged coastline and the breathtaking sunsets across Hawaii ’s Polihale Beach sand dunes, each of these would make an unforgettable holiday that’s far from the madding crowd.

Cannon Beach, Oregon

While some beaches trade off their sunshine quota, Cannon Beach in the Pacific Northwest is unique by virtue of being a marvel to visit whatever the weather. This long sandy stretch of coastline is home to the dramatic Haystock Rock, a giant towering rock formation that’s accessible on-foot at low tide. Adjacent stone “needles”, tidalpools and flocks of seabirds combine to make this an atmospheric spot. While a summer stroll is always pleasant, visiting in winter, with crashing waves and brooding skies is an unforgettable experience. Don’t leave without checking out the many art galleries and specialist shops that populate the town.

Outer Banks, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Outer Banks are a 100-mile plus stretch of barrier islands separating the mainland through a series of sounds and inlets. Home to wild horses, lighthouses and blissfully isolated expanses of sand, it’s the ideal place to seek out a spot away from the crowds. Hit the surf at Cape Hatteras, go fishing at Rodanthe Pier, or scramble up Jockey’s Ridge, the tallest living sandy dune system on the east coast.

Avalon Beach, New Jersey

Don’t be put off by its association with reality TV show Jersey Shore : this Atlantic region is home to 127 miles of sublime coastline, with plenty to interest and inspire. Head to Avalon on the Seven Mile Beach for white-sand beaches perfect for swimming, boating or kayaking, while North Wildwood is home to gentler waters and completely free to visit. Commercial boardwalks with amusements, water parks, shops and restaurants make this an ideal destination for a family break.

Kauaʻi, Hawaii

Hawaii ’s beaches are renowned the world over for their soft, white sands and tropical waters, but KauaÊ»i is best known for its dramatic cliffs, canyons and lush rainforests. Known as the “Garden Isle” for its verdant interior, it’s an ideal destination for trekking and kayaking, as well as being home to some of Hawaii’s most beautiful beaches.

PoÊ»ipÅ« Beach Park is one of KauaÊ»i’s most popular beaches, with a wading pool for younger swimmers and the occasional Hawaiian monk seal appearance, but travellers who really want to escape the crowds should head to the remote Polihale Beach. Located at the end of a dirty road, it’s a whopping 17 miles long, making it the longest stretch of beach in the entire state of Hawaii. Expect giant sand dunes, desert cacti and jaw-dropping sunsets. Polihale is notorious for being a very dangerous beach for swimming, however, so swap the dip for a steady stroll along the sands.

Cape Charles, Virginia

On the National Register of Historic Places, Cape Charles has one of the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century buildings on the east coast. This quaint Victorian-era town is home to award-winning golf courses, two nature preserves ripe for exploration, and watersports galore, including kayaking, paddleboarding and jet-skiing. Plus, Cape Charles’ soft, sand beach is free to access, with calm and shallow waters making it suitable for waterbabies.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

A 15-minute drive from downtown Corpus Christi is Padre Island, the world’s longest undeveloped barrier island. This conservation area, stretching around 66 miles, is a major migratory bird route and home to 350 different species, with nearly half of all north American migratory bird species passing through here at different times of the year. Explore this charming stretch of coastline by kayak or canoe, watch sea turtles being released, or simply walk along this untouched stretch of coastline. And if the prospect of returning to four walls doesn’t appeal, you can also camp here.

Seal Beach, California

California ’s not short of excellent beaches, but Seal Beach is an underrated gem. This laid-back town south of Los Angeles ’ Long Beach has soft white sand, incredible views from the second longest wooden pier in the state, and a 965-acre wildlife refuge you can visit. It’s also the start (or end) point of the San Gabriel River Trail, a 36-mile long cycle route that’s one of the best traffic-free spots in the valley for biking.

Dauphin Island, Alabama

Skip the crowds at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach and take the 40-minute ferry ride to the more secluded Dauphin Island. Known as the “sunset capital of Alabama”, this island is home to seven miles of white-sand beaches, great weather and crystal clear waters. Hike through the ancient maritime forest of Goat Tree Reserve, where you can spot birds including vireos, flycatchers and owls and sign up for a chartered fishing expedition, before feasting on crab and lobster at the acclaimed Skinner’s Seafood.

Wellfleet, Massachusetts

Cape Cod has long been a major draw for visitors on the east coast, but it’s also prone to overcrowding. Wellfleet, meanwhile, is a pretty, small and peaceful town surrounded by coast on both sides and centrally located, meaning it’s easy to travel around if you start to yearn for more action. It’s also famed for its excellent oysters, making it an dream destination for foodies. Head to Mac’s on the Pier for some of the best. And don’t leave without visiting the Wellfleet flea market, the biggest on Cape Cod.

Wildcat Beach, California

Fancy a challenge? Rewards don’t come easy at Wildcat, with visitors required to hike five miles to reach this remote California beach, but it’s more than worth the trek. Short on time? Mountain bike on the Stewart Trail, before cooling off in the Pacific. This peaceful spot is home to seals, striking cliff views and some incredible sunsets. And if you’d prefer to spread the hike over a few days, you can rest your bones at Wildcat Campground. Glass Beach, Port Townsend, Washington

Some people prefer to spend their time hunting for treasures on the beach instead of just lounging on the sand. Glass Beach, so named for its abundance of jewelry-quality sea glass, is a remote bluff and former small-town dump. Ecological concerns and development efforts saved the area from further pollution, and beachcombers are very grateful. You do have to work a little bit to get the goods, though: From North Beach, walk along the shore toward McCurdy Point, keeping your eyes peeled for pretty bits of smoothened glass. McCurdy Point is a three-mile walk, but you don't have to go that far. Be sure to get a timely start to beat the high tide, which can become dangerous if you're not careful, and enjoy views that include sea otters, bald eagles, and whales. Also, feel free to bring your pup.

Oak Street Beach, Chicago, Illinois

Usually, you have to leave urban areas to find the best shorelines, but this Midwestern metropolis is one of the few exceptions. The impressive Chicago skyline serves as the backdrop for this popular beach, located on the shores of Lake Michigan. Lounge chairs, umbrellas, and cabanas are available for rent, and there's a variety of food from local vendors. Bikers, joggers, walkers, and roller-skaters abound on the paved path surrounding the beach. Relax in the sun, people-watch, or get in on a volleyball game or chess match — the choice is yours.

Carlsmith Beach, Hilo, Hawaii

Because of the limited timeframe, it's best to plan your trip for weekdays in late May or early June, when it's also less crowded.

North Beach, Tybee Island, Georgia

Trade Spanish moss for grassy dunes at this coastal haven that's perfect for a quiet getaway. Reachable in about a half hour by car or shuttle from Savannah, North Beach is a peaceful, family-friendly spot frequented by locals. The stunning 360-degree views from the top of the historical Tybee Island Lighthouse are well worth the climb, especially during sunrise and sunset. When you get hungry, head to North Beach Bar and Grill , a casual restaurant with a tasty menu and a dog-friendly patio located between the beach and lighthouse.

Good Harbor Beach, Gloucester, Massachusetts

Good Harbor Beach is a family-friendly spot on Massachusetts' quieter cape with sugar-soft sand and relatively calm water. At low tide, you can walk across a sand bar and explore rocky Salt Island, while little ones get to play in warm tidal pools. Tasty snacks and toy rentals are available at the concession stand. Note that parking is limited and fills up fast, so arriving early is suggested. Off-site parking and shuttles provide other options.

Rockaway Beach, Queens, New York

This may not be a palm-tree-lined idyll, but for New Yorkers who can hop on a subway or bus to reach its white sand, five-mile boardwalk, and surf-worthy waves, it's heaven. And it's well worth the afternoon trip, as Rockaway Beach also features a skate park, volleyball and handball courts, playgrounds, spray showers, and restrooms. Barbecue areas for picnicking and eateries along the boardwalk ensure that no one goes home hungry.

Crystal Lake State Park, Barton, Vermont

Lined with about a mile of white sand and backed by scenic mountains, Crystal Lake's rich history dates back to the 1700s. The bathhouse with restrooms and a concession stand is made from granite mined from the nearby hills. The lake's cold waters are filled to the brim with rainbow trout, smallmouth bass, pumpkinseed, and yellow perch, among others, making it great for anyone who prefers to spend their beach days casting a line instead of swimming or serving a volleyball. It's a wonderful place to spend the night. There's an on-site cottage stocked with all the necessities (including a canoe) available for rent.

Gulf Shores Public Beach, Alabama

You can't do much better when it comes to U.S. beaches than the Gulf Coast. Pretty palm trees, clear water, and pristine white sand make this Gulf beach a standout. It's located close to a boardwalk, restaurants, and shops with easy access to parking. The well-kept beach is also a great place for activities like volleyball and boogie boarding in the relatively calm surf — and the $3 admission to the pier is worth getting to see the friendly fishermen, hungry pelicans, and an occasional dolphin.

Park Point Beach, Duluth, Minnesota

In Minnesota, you go big or you go home. Located on Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world , Park Point Beach is the world's longest freshwater sandbar. The beautiful beach and its waves have the feel of an ocean locale. It offers great views of Duluth and Lake Superior and is known for its spectacular sunrises. A nearby playground, barbecue grills, and a ball field are all popular with visitors. Leashed dogs are also welcome.

Asbury Park Beach, New Jersey

A little bit historic charm, a little bit rock 'n' roll, this Jersey Shore destination has everything you want out of a Northeastern summer spot. Stretching about a mile along New Jersey's Atlantic coast, Asbury Park Beach is a lively, clean, white-sand paradise. Sunbathing, swimming, surfing, fishing, and people-watching are popular activities here. It's backed by a historic boardwalk bustling with restaurants, bars, fast food, and interesting shops, in addition to a splash park and miniature golf courses. The Silverball Retro Arcade boasts more than 150 games including working pinball machines dating back to the 1930s. And just across the street is the fabled bar, The Stone Pony , made famous by locals Bruce Springsteen and Jon Bon Jovi.

Carmel Beach, Carmel-by-the-Sea, California

Carmel-by-the-Sea might be one of the most beautiful places in the U.S., apparent in its lapis-colored waters and rocky shoreline. This spectacular white-sand beach, located at the foot of Ocean Avenue, is a popular surfing spot. Visitors can enjoy a dip in the cool, crystal-clear waters with views of Pebble Beach to the north and Point Lobos to the south. Dogs are allowed off-leash with conscientious owners. Pack a picnic and a bottle of local wine (also permitted), and savor a magnificent California sunset in this seaside paradise.

Coligny Beach Park, Hilton Head, South Carolina

Hilton Head isn't just golf courses and candy-colored resorts. Its incredibly well-maintained beaches have made it a summer destination for people all over the southeast. The beautifully landscaped entrance to Coligny Beach welcomes you to its accessible location, made all the more popular by amenities that include showers, gazebos, benches, swings, free Wi-Fi, and a splash fountain to rinse off your sandy children. Wheelchair- and stroller-friendly matting leads to the water. Get there for sunrise, if you can, and keep an eye out for dolphins, which are known to pass by its shores.

Alki Beach, Seattle, Washington

Accessible by car or water taxi, this family-friendly beach on Puget Sound offers stunning views of the Olympic Mountains and downtown Seattle. Sand, salt water, volleyball courts, grills, and bonfire pits are all options for keeping yourself entertained. Joggers, bikers, and skaters fill the two-and-a-half-mile path that runs along the beach. Tip: Enjoy a sunset dinner at one of the unique waterfront restaurants.

Ocean Beach Park, New London, Connecticut

This half-mile, golden-sand beach with gentle tides provides great views of ferries and schooners sailing past the New London Ledge Lighthouse . Ocean Beach Park , located along the boardwalk, features a picnic area, playground, snack bar, mini-golf, arcade, and more. When you've had your fill of one of New England's premier sugar-sand beaches, take a dip in the Olympic-size pool. The on-site parking fee (from $30) covers admission for up to five guests. Otherwise, it's $10 for walk-ups.

Coney Island Beach, Brooklyn, New York

Nothing pairs with salt air like the smell of hot dogs and the sound of Rollerblades on the boardwalk. If you're seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without having to go too far, Coney Island is a perfect seaside wonderland of nostalgia and kitschy fun. With miles of sand, this public beach is rich in history and tradition. There are courts for beach volleyball, handball, and basketball as well as playgrounds to keep you entertained all day long. But, of course, you'll probably spend most of the time on the boardwalk that leads to the famed amusement park, home of the Wonder Wheel, Cyclone roller coaster, and New York Aquarium.

From fabled golden bays to little-known coves,  no shell has been left unturned during our hunt for the world's best beaches.

We have sent our writers everywhere in search of sublime, surf-pounded shorelines and remote pockets of hard-to-reach paradise for Lonely Planet's new book Best Beaches in the World . From Albania to Yemen and everywhere in between, our team has swam, snorkeled, slugged cocktails and hiked through rainforests, to create the definitive beach bible. 

Here's 20 of the 100 that were selected as our pick of the best beaches in the world.

1. The Pass, Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia

When the swell is good, The Pass has a right-hand point break that turns this stretch of pinkish-cream, pillowy-soft sand into a surfer’s paradise. Located at the most easterly point on mainland Australia, Cape Byron , it doesn't matter if you're a pro or a novice with the board, the bay has something for everyone, including lessons for beginners. 

The midden (a pile of shells and bones) next to the boat ramp points to the rich Aboriginal history of the area, while inside the subtropical rainforest that runs around the edge of The Pass are native koalas and brush turkeys. Delta Kay, an Arakwal Bundjalung woman, offers walking tours around the cape and several hiking tracks let you admire The Pass from different angles. The 0.3-mile (0.48 km) Palm Valley Currenbah track is wheelchair accessible and loops through the palm rainforest to some picnic and barbecue facilities. The most scenic track, however, is the 2.3-mile (3.7km) Cape Byron loop, which takes in the stunning homes of Wategos Beach and Little Wategos Beach . Note: if you want to surf The Pass, a 2023 law requires you to use a surfboard leash (leg rope).

Getting there:  The beach has limited paid parking. Either arrive early or walk from central Byron (20 minutes; the foreshore has a wheelchair-accessible path). Alternatively, neighboring Captain Cook and Clarkes beaches also have limited parking.

2. Ipanema Beach, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil

Renowned for some astonishing sunsets that the locals frequently applaud, Rio 's Ipanema Beach stretches for 1.9 miles (3 km). Local subcultures use its numbered lifeguard chairs as different markers for their area of the beach. For example, Posto 9, located off Rua Vinícius de Moraes, is the go-to spot for the fashionable crowd, attracting both the young and beautiful, alongside artists and hippies. Praia Farme, situated in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo, is where the gay community gathers. Posto 8 is where kids from the favela come together. Between Ipanema and Copacabana , Posto 7 is popular with surfers, and Posto 10 is where you'll find games of volleyball, soccer, and futevôlei (footvolley) going on.

Getting there:  Ipanema Beach is in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro. Av Vieira Souto runs alongside the beach and the closest Metrô station is General Osório.

3. Ao Maya, Ko Phi-Phi, Krabi, Thailand

At just 49ft-wide (15m) and 820ft-long (250m), Ao Maya is a slip of a beach hidden by limestone cliffs. Yet it caught the eye of film director Danny Boyle who used its ombré turquoise waters and fine white sand as the setting for The Beach , the 2000 film starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The movie's popularity attracted around 6000 tourists daily to Ao Maya. However, the influx led to a buildup of trash, damage to plants and coral, and disruption of wildlife.

This prompted Thai officials to close the bay in 2018. They initially hoped the beach would recover within a few months, but it remained closed until 2022. It then reopened with better infrastructure and additional protections. New rules now regulate tourist activities: swimming is prohibited (although knee-high wading is allowed); boats cannot anchor in the bay; and only 375 visitors can visit in hourly slots. Still, the trip is worth it to spend time in this incredible paradise and appreciate the natural beauty that was almost lost.

Getting there  From neighboring Ko Phi-Phi Don , take an early morning boat tour here (20 minutes each way) to beat the crowds. Alternatively, it's reachable by speedboat from Phuket and Krabi .

4. Mnemba Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania

After a few action-packed days on safari in mainland Tanzania , Mnemba Island acts as the perfect retreat. Only accessible to guests of the andBeyond resort, which sleeps 23, this gorgeous white-sand beach is like your personal coastal paradise. Indulge in long walks and enjoy some of the best scuba diving and snorkeling around.

Getting there Resort stays include transfers from either Stone Town or Abeid Amani Karume International Airport on Unguja Island, Zanzibar. It's then a short boat ride to Mnemba Island.

5. Sarakiniko, Milos Cyclades, Greece

You'll need to bring all your own supplies for Sarakiniko , a set of sun-bleached volcanic rocks that dip into a small deep turquoise stretch of the Aegean. The arresting views and cooling waters make up for having to rough it, though. Centuries of wave-and-wind erosion made the rock formations at the beach dip and arch, creating caves to explore and alabaster cliffs to jump off. Sunbathe on the rocks or use them as your access point to slip into the water for some snorkeling.

Ranked among the best-loved beaches in Greece , Sarakiniko can get packed with tourists. To avoid the crowds, visit in September and October. If you’re here during the high season, arrive in the morning and the only sounds you’ll hear will be the wind and the lapping waves. If you can, check back in at sunset – it’s quite a sight as the alabaster-colored rocks glow against the fiery hues from the setting sun.

Getting there  Sarakiniko is 1.9 miles (3km) north of Adamas port, on Milos ’ northernmost coast. Several daily buses run here from Adamas during summer months and there’s parking for anyone arriving by scooter, car, or ATV. Milos airport has domestic flights to and from Athens, or you can also reach Milos by ferry from Athens ’ Piraeus port (2½ to 6½ hours) as well as other islands such as Santorini (two hours).

6. Chesterman Beach, Tofino, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada

Most people come to Chesterman Beach to surf, but it’s the views that will take your breath away. From misty mornings where the fog comes off the soft sand to the fiery skies in the evening as the sun dips below the cedar trees, you could spend all day here. The beach is also great for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding,  and observing the hundreds of colorful starfish, anemones, urchins and other sea creatures that appear in tide pools.

You can even enjoy the beach as you whale watch, partake in outdoor yoga, or walk across the sandbar at low tide. The calm summer months are perfect for beginner surfers and with several expert-led surf schools based locally. Winter, and its serious swells, draw experienced surfers. It also hosts surf competitions. Make sure you bring your wetsuit – water temperatures don’t get much higher than 57°F (13.8°C). 

Getting there  Chesterman Beach is 3.1 miles (5km) south of Tofino , near the far west end of  Vancouver Island ’s Pacific Rim Highway. You can easily cycle here from Tofino. Regular ferries run between Vancouver city and Nanaimo (on Vancouver Island) in just under two hours. From there, it’s a 125-mile (200 km) drive west to Tofino – around a three-hour drive or a four-hour bus ride.

7. Cabo San Juan del Guía, Parque Nacional Natural Tayrona, Colombia

Ringed by rainforest, the golden sands and coconut palms of Colombia ’s Caribbean coast are picture-perfect – especially Cabo San Juan del Guía. It is located in a national park that stretches along the coast from the Taganga near Santa Marta to the mouth of the Río Piedras, 22 miles (35km) east, and covers some 29,900 acres (12,100 hectares) of land and 7400 acres (3000 hectares) of coral-rich sea.

While it is a bit of a hike (approximately 2 hours) to get to this set of picturesque turquoise bays enclosed by rocky outcrops, it’s well worth it – and many others agree as the beach is popular with locals and tourists alike. If you want to wake up to the incredible view, you can rent a hammock, tent, or one of the very few cabins surrounding the beach. Note: they’re rented on a first come, first served basis so arrive early, especially in the high season (December and January). There’s also a restaurant so you won’t go hungry, but remember to bring your own water or purifying device as you’ll need it here. The park has banned plastic, so make sure you’re not carrying any in. You’ll want to leave this beautiful beach in pristine condition for future generations to enjoy.

Getting there It takes an hour by bus from the Santa Marta Public Market to reach the El Zaino park entrance, 23 miles (37km) to the east, with frequent daily departures. From the park entrance, colectivos (minibuses) run to the beginning of the trail. You can also reach the beach via a two-hour hike or a rough 50-minute boat ride.

8. Anse Source d’Argent, La Digue, Seychelles

With its pristine white sands shaded by coconut palms and shallow turquoise waters that gently lap against granite boulders, Anse Source d’Argent is usually found on lists of the world’s best beaches and rightly so. This is the beach of dreams. It’s an adventure to get here, but a fun one that involves a ferry, a bike ride (or walk) to L’Union Estate , a former vanilla and coconut plantation that charges a small fee to access the beach. Take a moment to tour the estate-turned-museum before you head 0.43 miles (700m) down the road ti get your first glimpse of heaven on Earth. While you enjoy the beach you can also sip on fresh fruit juices and coconuts (with rum, if you wish) from one of the rustic beach bars along the beach. To avoid the inevitable crowds, come in the early morning, but then return in the late afternoon (with your same entrance ticket) to enjoy the gorgeous sunset on a near-empty beach.

Getting there  It takes less than two hours to reach La Digue by ferry from Victoria on the main island of Mahé , and just 15 minutes by ferry from Baie Ste Anne in Praslin.

9. Playa Balandra, La Paz BCS, México

An enclosed cove beach with shallow deep blue waters, Playa Balandra is perfect for kids. Apart from swimming, this is also very much an activity-oriented beach with kayaks and stand-up paddleboards available for rent. Beachgoers can also explore tide pools and hike to neighboring coves. A protected area surrounded by arid, cacti-covered mountains, the beach is part of the azure Balandra Bay, which has glass-clear waters and white sands. Only 450 people are currently allowed on this beach per day (with two time slots from 8am-noon and 1-5pm), so it never feels too crowded, but it’s still best to get there early to secure a timeslot. The first Sunday of every month is exclusively reserved for locals, so make sure you plan your beach day in advance. Note that beach chairs and umbrellas are available to rent, but there are no other facilities.

Getting there:  Make the 30-minute drive north from La Paz in a hire car or catch a bus from the La Paz Malecón bus station, with departures roughly every two hours from 9am.

10. Punta Paloma, Tarifa, Cádiz, Spain

With its soft sands, sparkling waters, and wind-carved dunes set against a backdrop of Morocco and the Strait of Gibraltar, it’s easy to see why Punta Paloma is one of the most seductive beaches in Spain . The deep blue Atlantic offers excellent swimming, the dunes offer dazzling views, and the chiringuito (beach restaurant) offers beachgoers tinto con limón (red wine with lemonade). Everyone from first-timers to local residents love this beach.

Walk along the west end of the curving sand will lead you to natural mud baths where you can paint your skin with mineral-rich mud. There are several other walking and horse-riding routes along the surrounding hills, some of which lead you to sights such as the prehistoric Los Algarbes necropolis. If you’d rather stick to the beach, there are several opportunities for kitesurfing rentals and lessons. Or, if you prefer sticking to the sands and watching the waves, you’ll likely also catch a glimpse of dolphins, whales, migratory birds, and maybe even a turtle. 

Ge tting there  Punta Paloma is 6.2 miles (10km) northwest of Tarifa and linked by bus during summer months only. Tarifa is easily reached by car or bus from Málaga , Gibraltar , Jerez , or Seville , all of which have international airports.

11. Punta Rata Beach, Brela, Makarska Riviera, Croatia 

Dreamy Punta Rata extends 1312ft (400m) around a headland protected by a nature reserve in a magical place where the Aleppo pine forests meet the cool, clear Adriatic Sea. One of the Croatian coast’s most exquisite beaches, the fragrant pine groves provide shade, while the deep blue waters offer ideal temperatures above 70°F (20°C) from June to October) for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, or stand-up paddleboarding. This beach is pure bliss. Linger on the nearby promenade to catch the magnificent sunsets, when the sky glows with deep orangey-reds and neon pinks, as the sun dips below the pine-dotted outcrop that rises from the sea.

Getting there  The beach is on the northwest edge of Brela (easily reached by walking or cycling), around 31 miles (50km) southeast of Split on Croatia ’s Dalmatian coast. Split has an international airport and good bus links to Brela (1 hour).

12. West Beach, Berneray, Outer Hebrides, Scotland 

The beaches of the Outer Hebrides look like they belong somewhere tropical rather than the North Atlantic shores of Scotland . West Beach is among the most picturesque – its powdery sands meet both the jewel-like green-blue waters and machair (grazing land). The wilds of this shoreline make it look like an untouched paradise, but these three miles (5km) of coast are a draw for tourists as well as locals. The brave might go for a swim in these chilly waters that rarely get above 55°F (13°C), but it’s a paradise for beachcombers, bird-watchers, and hikers. The grassy elevated dunes offer the perfect perch for pristine views of the beach and the best place to spot cormorants, gannets and more. Come in the spring, when the surrounding landscape is a burst of color thanks to the wildflowers that grow in abundance.

Getting there Stretching along the entire west coast of Berneray, you'll need to catch a ferry from Leverburgh in neighboring Harris (the southern half of the Outer Hebrides’ main island) to get here. There are flights from Edinburgh , Inverness , Glasgow and Southampton to Stornoway Airport in Lewis (the northern half of the principal island), which also has ferry links. You’ll want a car to explore; book the ferry in advance.

13. Rauðasandur, Westfjords, Iceland

Iceland’s Rauðasandur is a wild, 6-mile-long (10km) beauty with breathtaking sea cliffs and a turquoise lagoon that snakes through a sprawl of red, orange and pink sand – colors from crushed scallop shells. Located in the Westfjords, it’ll feel as if you have the beach to yourself, save from the company of grey and harbor seals that sometimes frolic on the shore. Rauðasandur also has some excellent hiking trails. It’s possible to walk to the famous Látrabjarg bird cliffs where thousands of puffins, razorbills, gannets, and terns gather during the warmer months.

Getting there  Rauðasandur sits 19 miles (30km) south of Patreksfjörður in the Westfjords , reachable on a 1-hour flight from Reykjavík . It's a 640-mile (400 km) drive from Reykjavík, or you can catch the Baldur car ferry to Rauðasandur from Stykkishólmur, 106 miles (170 km) north of the capital. The often-unpaved roads in The Westfjords require time, patience, planning and a sturdy 4WD vehicle.

14. Pink Beach, Padar Island, Komodo National Park, Indonesia

Only a handful of beaches in the world have the rosy, cotton-candy sands of Pink Beach, located inside Komodo National Park . Its distinctive hue comes from deep red organ pipe corals that have broken down offshore over centuries and mixed with the fine white sand grains to produce the soft, pink shoreline. With an abundance of coral, the beach is a popular snorkeling spot – schools of tropical fish love the reefs too. Simple beach huts dot the shoreline here, offering drinks and simple meals as well as the only shade on the sun-drenched beach.  Pink Beach is popular with tourists; arrive early or just before sunset for a quieter experience.

Getting there On the northwest shore of Padar Island, around 25 miles (40km) from Labuan Bajo , Pink Beach can only be visited on a day tour from the fishing town or a private day liveaboard cruise.

15. Dueodde, Nexø, Bornholm, Denmark

The wild Baltic Sea surrounds Denmark’s sunniest island, Bornholm . Famed for its crisp natural light, head to Dueodde on the southern tip to see why. The sun's rays kiss the pearl-colored sands and make the soft jade and cerulean waves at this lovely beach shimmer. Wading through the shallow water here feels like stepping into a painting. In the evening, its sunsets turn the sky pink, orange, and yellow. Whilst the campsites and cafes are busy in the summer, don't rule out visiting in the winter when the locals toboggan down the snow-covered sand dunes. For the best views, climb the 196 steps to the top of Dueodde’s blue-and-white 1960s lighthouse.

Getting there  Dueodde’s main patch of beach is 6.2 miles (10 km) south of Nexø, at the southern end of Bornholm, around 125 miles (200 km) east of Copenhagen . There are car parks at nearby Fyrvejen and Skrokkegard. Bornholm Airport has year-round 35-minute flights to and from Copenhagen, as well as seasonal links with Berlin, Aarhus and others. There are also regular ferry services to and from Ystad in Sweden (1¼ hours).

16. Keem Bay Beach, Keel, County Mayo, Ireland

A short 4.9-mile (8km) drive from Keel village, at the western end of County Mayo’s Achill Island , is one of Ireland ’s most glorious, secluded bays: Keem Bay Beach . The verdant green hillsides spill down to a deep-set horseshoe-shaped bay, where a pale-blonde beach sits framed by the Croaghaun Cliffs and the swell of the wild Atlantic. Tucked away beneath the cliffs, the bay offers calm (if cool) waters. Swimmers and snorkelers can both take advantage of the gentle sea here. Launch a kayak from the shore during the warmer summer months for fabulous views of the rural Ireland from the water. You might also catch a glimpse of pods of dolphins, which sometimes swim and feed by the bay.

Getting there  Keem Bay is accessible along western Achill Island’s snaking R319 road. The nearest airport is Ireland West Airport Knock, 59 miles (95km) east of Achill Island, or a 1½-hour drive away, with some international flights.

17. Ruby Beach, Olympic National Park, Washington, USA

Two miles (3.2km) south of the Hoh River and bordered by a rainforest, Ruby Beach is a great introduction to the Pacific Northwest. It looks like waters have lashed wildly against the shoreline here until trees have toppled and the sea are stacks found with a swirling froth crashing at their feet. It's great for beachcombers – agates, garnets and sea glass all glitter in the sand – but there is treasure inside its tide pools, too. Anemones, sea urchins, purple starfish and skittering crabs, make it a wonderland for children and adults alike.

Getting there  Ruby Beach is on the southwestern coast of the Olympic Peninsula and borders Hwy 101, which loops around the peninsula and the national park. The beach is 172 miles (277km) west of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.

18. Stanhope Beach, Prince Edward Island National Park, PEI, Canada

Stanhope at Prince Edward Island National Park has some of Canada ’s best beaches. Glistening wetlands meet the north coast of the Atlantic, with 25 miles (40km) of beach framed by rolling dunes that provide refuge for the endangered piping plover bird. Boardwalks hover above the red-gold sand, and offer beautiful views of the coast while also connecting the dunes to the shoreline. During summer the water is warm enough for swimming and there’s a popular campsite among the trees just back from Stanhope Main Beach, so you can stay for the beautiful sunset and wake up to the lapping of the waves against the shore.

Getting there  Stanhope Beach is around 12 miles (20km) north of Charlottetown , PEI’s provincial capital, which has flights to Toronto, Montréal, Ottawa and elsewhere in Canada. Getting there  Pacifico Beach is 13 miles (21km) or a 30-minute drive north of Surigao’s domestic airport, and 31 miles (50km) north of the island’s main tourism hub, General Luna. The drive from the latter, typically undertaken by rental scooter, takes just over an hour, but most visitors make a day of it, lingering at the many viewpoints and other attractions along the way.

Dr. Stephen Leatherman, aka “Dr. Beach,” Director of the Laboratory for Coastal Research at Florida International University, releases his rankings of the best beaches in America every year.

Dr. Beach evaluates contenders on 50 categories, including sand softness, water temperature, and the number of sunny days to determine the top beaches in the country. 

This year, he named St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle as his top pick, saying, “This long barrier island, far from urban areas, is a favorite destination for beachgoers, anglers, and bird watchers as nature abounds.”

St. George Island State Park, Florida Panhandle, Florida

This remote barrier island is perfect for vacationers looking to get away from it all. Crystal clear water invites swimming, and the powder white sand only adds to the picturesque appeal. 

Dr. Beach says he enjoys “beachcombing and shelling” at St George Island. 

Where to Stay: There are no hotels located within the state park, but Buccaneer Inn is one of the closest places to stay—and it overlooks another lovely beach.

Duke Kahanamoku Beach, Oahu, Hawaii

Waikiki Beach is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful places in the world, and it draws a big number of visitors accordingly. Find some peace and quiet on the west end of Waikiki Beach at Kahanamoku Beach, which is the widest beach around—offering plenty of empty space to spread your towel.

Where to Stay: Accommodations along Coopers Beach are primarily private homes, but the quaint 1708 House is an easy bike ride away.

Caladesi Island State Park, Dunedin/Clearwater, Florida

Accessible only by boat or a 3-mile walk from Clearwater Beach, Caladesi Island State Park is a truly remote escape. “The white beach is composed of crystalline quartz sand which is soft and cushy at the water’s edge, inviting one to take a dip in the sparkling clear waters,” says Dr. Beach.

Poipu Beach, says Dr. Beach, is “actually two beaches in one. A tombolo, which is a narrow sand spit that extends from the shore to an island, separates the two pocket beaches.”

Where to Stay: In peak season (mid-June to Labor Day) beach parking is restricted to Eastham residents and vehicles with handicap placards. Trunk Bay is long with fluffy white sand and has calm waters and thriving coral reefs that are perfect for snorkeling and kayaking. It has all the amenities you’ll need too—a snack shack, restrooms, showers, picnic tables, beach chairs, and a rental shop for beach gear. Unfortunately, there’s a small entrance fee though.

The beach can get crowded (especially on cruise dock days). Luckily, if you head left from the entrance, you’ll get more privacy and better snorkeling. And if you continue beyond the rocks, you’ll discover a small secret pocket beach, Jumbie Beach!

Wailea Beach, one of Hawaii’s beaches that is consistently on the world’s best beaches list, is the beach for the Grand Wailea and Four Seasons resorts. So, if you’re feeling fancy, this is your spot.

Wailea Beach is wide, has soft golden sand, and umbrellas and cabanas are sprinkled along the water. There’s a paved walkway that runs the length of the beach, bathrooms, showers, and free public parking.

When the ocean is calm, boogie boarding, body surfing, and snorkeling are great to do here.

6. Big Island: Hapuna Beach

Not only one of the best US beaches in February, Hapuna Beach is regularly voted among the best beaches in the world! It’s roughly 200 feet wide and stretches for about a half mile. It’s a breathtaking beach with pure white sand and a gradual slope into the ocean.

Besides being beautiful, the beach has everything you will need. There are restrooms, picnic tables, beach and gear rentals, food concession stands, lots of trees for shade, lifeguards, and a large parking lot. Snorkeling is good on the north and south sides too. 

I absolutely loved my time on this beach, I stayed for almost the full day! (And the fish tacos at the food stand were delish!)

There are multiple volleyball nets set up on the beach too. And some resorts have full service on the beach, so you can get food and drinks right at your beach chair.

The beach is lined by the Hollywood Beach Broadwalk, full of restaurants, boutiques, dessert shops, live music, and great people watching.

Santa Barbara is a charming, quintessential California beach town. It has a laid-back vibe with beautiful Mediterranean-style architecture.

In the following article, I provide a description of over 50 of the best places and their beaches in the United States for the best warm winter vacations. They are found in 7 states – South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas, Arizona, California, and Hawaii – and one US territory – Puerto Rico.

All of them boast an average temperature in winter of over 60 o F, with many consistently reaching 70Fs and even 80Fs. They offer a selection of airports that make them easily reachable and excellent hotels, mostly steps to the beach. In addition, there are countless other activities found nearby for those looking for fun and excitement both on and off the beach.

Puerto Rico: Best Places In Winter In USA For A Beach Holiday

If you want one of the best places in winter in the USA for a beach holiday, Puerto Rico offers 270 miles of beaches. Spanish is the dominant language in this area, and the beautiful architecture reflects its’ Spanish influence.

Tropical weather means an average year-round temperature of 80˚F. January is the coldest month, with the possibility of it dropping to 70 degrees as a low, but still plenty warm with average highs of 83 degrees. Hurricane season runs from June to the end of November. If you are looking for the driest season, then the best time to go is December to March. If you are looking for the best beaches in the USA in winter, Puerto Rico is an excellent choice. 

Puerto Rico is an island so flying into Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan and renting a car is your best option. Public transport is unreliable, and taxis are expensive. You can also fly directly to regional airports of Ponce and Aguadilla from many US Cities. 

Ocean Park Beach, San Juan

If you prefer a less crowded beach, this mile-long wide sandy beach with a few almond and palm trees is one of the best US beaches in winter. You can dip a toe or more in the Atlantic Ocean or enjoy the refreshing deep blues, shading to dazzling aquamarine. In addition, you can indulge in the usual water sports of paddle boarding, windsurfing, and kite surfing. 

In the evening, you can explore the bioluminescence in the bay with a night-time glass-bottomed kayak tour. Although the amount of bioluminescence each night can’t be guaranteed, it is an incredible experience.

El Tuque Beach , Ponce

El Tuque Beach offers a family recreation center with a sandy beach near Ponce. You can have a great time with picnics on the beach and plenty of fun activities in the water park complex. As well as fun in the water, you can enjoy white water rowing, hiking, snorkeling, diving, and swimming in one of the best American beaches in winter. 

In the nearby Ponce International Speedway Park, there is drag racing for the speed demons in the family. There are over 18 beaches in the area, so in theory, you can visit a different beach every day of your vacation. 

Ponce is the second biggest city in Puerto Rico. There are ferry trips to some of the uninhabited islands nearby. Of course, that means even more beaches and water sports. Alternatively, visit the dry Gaunica State Forest , or the nature spot on land and sea in the La Parguera Nature Reserve .

The old town is colorful and rich in historic buildings like the 17 th Century Ponce Cathedral, a survivor of numerous earthquakes. 

Holiday Inn Ponce is the closest to the beach, but you will still need to drive to reach it. This hotel also puts you in the perfect place to enjoy the city and its many attractions.

Florida is sometimes known as the amusement park destination in the world with the theme parks Disney World Resort and Universal Orlando . However, it is so much more.

There are countless Florida destinations for nature lovers to discover and explore. In addition, it has plenty of gorgeous beaches but the Gulf Shore (on the Gulf of Mexico) with sandy white tropical beaches is considered among the world’s best. 

With all of its amenities, amazing restaurants and hotels, Florida is one of the best places in the USA for a beach vacation in winter.

Winter temperatures don’t normally drop below 75-80 degrees, so Florida is a great place if you want a winter beach holiday. The average temperature of the water, even in winter, is comparable to a warm bath.

Florida has dozens of international and regional airports. Once you figure out your dream beach destination, you can easily find the closest international or domestic airport that best suits your airline choices.

Miami Beaches

Miami has 20 miles of stunning coastline with Florida’s trademark fine sands and warm water. If you want a family holiday without hiring a car and one that is less than 10 miles from Miami International Airport, stay in South Beach. Once you have unpacked your suitcase, you have some of the best beaches in Florida within walking distance:

• Miami Beach – 100 yards.
• Lummus Park Beach – 150 yards.
• South Pointe Park Beach – 1,400 yards.

If you don’t mind a slightly longer walk, you can visit Fisher Island Beach at 1.7 miles.

Best Things To Do

Jungle Island (formerly Parrot Island) offers shows, interactive exhibits, and a fun and educational experience with animals to photograph, including a Liger (a cross between a lion and a tiger) called Hercules.

Miami has all the big city attractions of shops, theatres, a zoo and plenty of museums and galleries. The Art Deco District offers pastel buildings, retail, and delicious places to eat lunch or an evening meal.

If you want to add some culture, the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens offers an enjoyable day out. Events like the farmer’s market in the nearby village provide the option of some hand-crafted gifts.

In line with the coastal theme, one of the most popular attractions is the Miami Sea Aquarium , where you can get close to large marine animals (swim with a dolphin) and learn about their work to support the manatee. 

Miami is nearby two amazing national parks. For a more natural connection to marine life, you can check out Biscayne National Park, one of the most unique national parks in the United States, which is only an hour away. This National Park is 95% underwater. Alternatively, head over to Everglades National Park to experience swamp life including alligators, crocodiles, dolphins and manatees.

Poipu Beach In The South

The spectacular natural feature to observe (from a distance) is the Spouting Horn – a natural blowhole on the lava shelf that can project the seawater up to fifty feet. The best (and safest) areas for swimming are at either end of the bay – Baby Beach and Baldwin Cove. In the center, the breaking waves are stronger, so pay attention to the waves and maybe have a word with the lifeguards stationed on the beach on how the ocean is behaving on the day you visit. 

Paia town is charming, and you can go gift shopping or find somewhere to eat. The Paia Stupa (consecrated by the Dalai Lama in 2007) is a landmark worth a visit. Visitors are welcome to admire the 27 feet Stupa and turn the Mani prayer wheel. There is a regular meditation program that you can book if you feel like resting your mind. 

La’akea Farm run by a vocational community, supports learning challenged adults and children. It hosts a farmer’s market and craft studios. It’s a beautiful place to visit, and your support helps keep it running. 

Baldwin Beach Park is 15 minutes from the airport.

Georgia: Best Warm Beaches In US In Winter

Georgia (the home of Coca-Cola) has some of the best beaches in the US in winter. In addition, January and February are low season and very affordable.  

The coldest month is November, and the daytime temperature can drop below 50 degrees. October, December, January, and February all have daytime temperatures above 60 degrees. You might not want to go swimming, but you can enjoy water sports and other beach activities.

Tybee Island or Savannah Beach

On Tybee Island, you get a city on an island with a pirate’s past. The sand is smooth, you can bike around town, and the seafood is fresh and delicious. It is a haven for nature lovers (Turtles and Osprey) with the added attraction of water sports and historic buildings (Civil war fort and Tybee Lighthouse).

The lighthouse is the oldest and tallest in Georgia. The exhibits in the nearby cottages cover the history of Fort Screven, the Euchee tribe, and island history.

You can take classes in sea kayaking or rent a sea kayak if already proficient. Winter isn’t peak dolphin season (although there are one or two), but you can still take a Captain Mike Tour to see the lighthouses (Tybee and Cockspur) and Fort Pulaski from the water. 

Most people enjoy using a bike to see the island because the roads are bike-friendly, and the island has plenty of scenic trails. 

There are other attractions in the area, but they are all over ten miles away. If you enjoy getting out and about, other places to visit are:

• Marinas – Savanah Bend, Tidewater Boatworks, Bahai Bleu, and the Isle of Hope. 
• Isle of Hope Historic District – a hundred years of occupation with an eclectic mix of architectural styles.
• Bonaventure Cemetery – famous for its role in “Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil”. This is a must-visit for lovers of the book or film. You won’t see the Bird Girl (relocated to a museum in Savannah), but the trees and bird life are astounding.

You see a mixture of upright and fallen trees with that evocative driftwood patina achieved by sea polishing and aging. The trees did not drift in but are a result of the erosion of the land over the past 500 years. You see whole trees, including the roots. 

You can swim here, but there are no facilities to shower or have a bathroom break. This is an ideal choice for a beautiful warm beach in winter in America that connects you to nature.

The Georgia Sea Turtle Center lets you see any current patients and provides exhibits about sea turtle conservation. If you visit the center, make time for a walk around the Jekyll Island Historic Landmark District. 

The Summer Waves water park will keep the big, and little kids in your party entertained – but check opening times. 

Bike trails are a popular way to visit the island’s many historic features:

• Horton House (ruins of Georgia’s first brewery), 
• St Andrews Beach (outdoor installation showing the history of a slave ship), 
• Historic Wharf and Mosaic the island Museum showcasing the rich and famous overwintering on Jekyll Island back in the early 1900s. 

Cumberland Island National Seashore is less than an hour away, shorter by boat.

The closest airport is Jacksonville International Airport (about 63 miles), and you will need a car to get here. 

The Seafarer Inn has a swimming pool, and you can walk to these beaches:

• Jekyll Island Oceanview Beach Park – 200 yards.
• Great Dunes – 900 yards.
• Driftwood beach – 1.7 miles.

South Carolina: Best US Destination For A Warm Winter Beach Vacation

The southeast of South Carolina has 2,876 miles of sea coast with some of the best US beaches in winter.

The coastal areas are mild, and the daytime temperatures rarely fall below 60 degrees. The night-time temperatures can be significantly cooler. You can still wear light clothing throughout the winter, but pack a warmer layer.

The winters are dry, and by visiting in the winter months, you miss both hurricane and tornado season. 

Hilton Head

There is a selection of beaches, including the popular Coligny Beach Park , and while you are on the island, you can enjoy luxury spas, golf, and tennis. There is a wide range of beach activities, including canoeing and windsurfing. You can explore the trails by foot, bike, or horse. There are also lots of amazing day trips from Hilton Head .

The nearest airport is Hilton Head Airport which is centrally located. 

Sonesta Resort is practically on the beach. Within walking distance, you can access these amazing beaches:

• Hilton Head Island beach – 200 yards
• Coligny Beach Park – 1.1 miles.
• Hilton Head Island Beach South – 1.8 miles.

Sullivans Island

Sullivans Island is a small island (only three miles across) and the inspiration for Edgar Allen Poe’s short story – The Gold Bug. White sand and great water sports make this one of the best US destinations for a warm beach escape when it’s cold. 

Sullivan Island Lighthouse has a unique triangular shape and an elevator to cut out climbing the stairs to the lantern room. You can’t tour the lighthouse (they used to get visitors to sign a document acknowledging the risk of injury), but it is an ideal subject for a photograph or sketch. 

If you enjoy historic forts, you can visit Fort Moultrie and Fort Sumner . These fortifications have a fascinating history from the wars of independence, civil wars, and World War II. Part of the less savory history is the international slave trade, and there is an exhibit outlining Sullivan Island’s involvement. 

If you are a fan of Edgar Allen Poe, then a visit to the library in a converted bunker near Fort Moultrie is a pleasant hour. Poe did his military service on the island. 

For those who enjoy taking home unusual gifts, drop into the Sandpiper Gallery where there are regular exhibitions of modern artists and a sculpture garden. As well as art to hang on your wall, you can browse for jewelry, ceramics, and glass. 

For outdoor activities, you have plenty of choices – kiteboarding and electric bike tours, as well as water sports.

The nearest airport is Charleston international Airport which is a 25 minute drive.

Flag Street 1851A hotel has an ideal location. It is only 200 yards from the beach and offers most home comforts. 

Huntington Beach State Park

This is one of the smaller of the best beaches in the US in winter. Hungtington Beach State Park only offers only three miles of beach. However, there is plenty of wildlife to see, and interesting history.

You can fish and enjoy trail walking as well as hanging out on the beach. The beach is wide and sandy but has few visitors. You can tour Antalya Castle , the former winter home of the sculptress Anna Hyatt Huntington, but most people come for the wildlife and the trails. 

Nearby Brookgreen Gardens has plenty of winter events, including the Nights of a Thousand Candles (from the end of November to the beginning of January) and gothic folk tales around Halloween. The regular attractions are American sculptures, Lowcountry Zoo, and the botanical gardens. 

You can enjoy a varied program of water tours from the Crazy Sisters Marina and enjoy the spectacular views from the Murrays Inlet Marsh walk.

Lee’s Farmers Market gives foodies local produce and Italian products (over 100 authentic products shipped in from New York ). The market supplies local restaurants with the finest ingredients, but you can fill a shopping bag with delicacies to take home or eat for a picnic lunch. 

The area has plenty of beaches in addition to Huntington Beach:

• Murrells Inlet Beach – the marsh walk is enchanting and lets you see nature from a different angle.
• Garden City Beach – friendly atmosphere with water sports, crabbing, and fishing.
• Surfside Beach – pier, boardwalk, and a water park nearby.
• Litchfield beach – quiet and relaxing, surf, swim, or collect shells. Learn about the former rice plantations at the Gullah O’oman shop. 

Congaree National Park is just under 3 hours away.

The closest airport is Myrtle Beach International Airport, a 25 minutes drive.

A friendly and comfortable hotel is Hampton Inn Murrells Inlet . In addition, it is very close to the beach.

Unlike wildlife, most families don’t migrate to warmer climates to escape the winter weather. 1.  Siesta Beach

Where: Siesta Key

As its name implies, Siesta Key is the place to relax. The expansive beachfront rarely feels overcrowded and the fine quartz-crystal white sand stays cool to the touch, so be sure to dig your feet in whilst reading your favorite magazine. (Ahem.) Pack your cooler with your adult beverages—no glasses allowed—and, if you bring a designated driver, get there early as parking fills up quickly. Should you feel the need to exert yourself, kayaks and paddleboards are available for rental.

2.  Cape San Blas

Where: Gulf County

If you are a nature lover looking for a secluded, dog-friendly beach filled with soft white sand brimming with local wildlife and offering fantastic sunset views, then Cape San Blas is the place for you. This 17-mile peninsula is home to a wilderness preserve featuring hiking trails, scallop beds and great snorkeling spots. It is also one of the few spots in Florida where you can ride a horse right on the beach.

3.  Santa Rosa Beach

Where: Walton County

The panhandle of Northwest Florida is known as the Emerald coast given the gorgeous green hues of its waters. Where the gulf meets the Santa Rosa Beach, the sugar-white sand is packed so tightly that you can hear your footsteps as you walk across it. High-rise hotels are not allowed, which helps keep the crowds down, and there are several entrances to Point Washington State Forest, a lush 15,000-acre preserve home to hiking trails, campgrounds and local wildlife.

4.  Dry Tortugas

Where: Monroe County

Some of the best snorkeling in Florida can be found off of the pristine beach at the Dry Tortugas National Park, located about 70 miles off of Key West . The only way to get there is by boat, the Yankee Freedom III high-speed catamaran ferry or seaplane (our choice, obviously). Sunbathe on the soft powdery sand, snorkel the clear blue-green waters or take a guided tour of Fort Jefferson.

5.  Flagler Beach

Where: Flagler and Volusia counties

The most exciting thing about this six-mile stretch of beach located between Daytona and St Augustine is the nice portion that grants pet-friendly access, allowing leashed dogs on the beach. It’s also a fantastic location to watch the incredible sunrises over the Atlantic Ocean and there are plenty of affordable houses available for rent right on the beach that allow pets for free or a small fee. A perfect home-away-from-home for you and your pooch, indeed.

6.  Pass-a-Grille Beach

Where: Pass-a-Grille 

Located at the Southernmost end of St Petersburg Beach on central Florida’s west coast, Pass-a-Grille Beach is the best spot to watch the sun set over the Gulf of Mexico. Relax or stroll along the wide, sandy beaches, take a paddleboarding lesson in the Gulf waters or explore the tiny island by taking a self-guided walking tour courtesy of the Gulf Beaches Historical Museum. Then toast it all with a cocktail at the fabulous Don CeSar resort, known locally as the “pink palace.”

7.  Sanibel Island Beach

Where: Sanibel Island

Shell seekers come from all over the world to Sanibel to comb the beach for one of the more than 250 different types of shells that the gulf tides wash up onto the silky sand. In addition to the beautiful beach with its shallow waters leading out into the gulf, buildings are no more than three stories high, so there are plenty of locations to take in the incredible views of the sunset.

8.  Amelia Island

Where: Nassau County

Amelia Island sits on 13 miles of wide golden sand on a barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean just north of Jacksonville . Once you make your way over the large sand dunes dotted with sea oats, you will see that the beach is wide with plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the expansive ocean views. As you watch the sandpipers and seagulls at the shore, keep your eyes open for dolphins swimming in the ocean.

9.  Bahia Honda

Bahia Honda is a 500-acre park with beaches fronting both the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico. The beautiful beaches are divided by a gigantic crumbling remnant of one of the original bridges built in the early 1900s for the railroad that connected the Florida Keys to the mainland. After spending the day lounging, kayaking or snorkeling on the gulf or oceanside beach, you can sleep under the stars at the campground just steps from the ocean.

10.  Blind Pass Beach

Where: Sarasota County

You’ll find more seagulls and sandpipers than people on this secluded beach which is a favorite spot of shell-seekers. Spend the day relaxing on the soft sand or combing the gulf’s edge for shark’s teeth, sand dollars and shells that wash up on the beach. Sea turtles nest here and you might spot a manatee or two in the water as you wander through the trail in the nearby mangroves.

11.  Navarre Beach

Where: Navarre 

As you drive over the causeway on the Emerald coast, you are greeted by Navarre Beach’s 12 miles of soothing, white quartz-sand beach and emerald-green water. After relaxing gulf-side, make sure to pay just $1 to walk the long fishing pier that juts out into the gulf as you will get terrific views of the local sea life including rays, sharks, sea turtles and a variety of fish.

12.  Indian Rocks Beach

Where: Pinellas County

The views of the sunset from the west coast of Florida cannot be beat and Indian Rocks Beach is a local favorite when celebrating the end of another beautiful day. The dune-lined beach is rarely crowded, easily accessible and there is plenty of parking and beach access. For a change of pace, take a stroll along the boardwalk to explore the lush mangroves.

13.  Cayo Costa State Park

Where: Lee County

This beach is only accessible by boat or ferry, and the extra effort it takes to get here is completely worth it. Low tide is the best time to search for shells. While sunbathing, make sure to keep an eye out for the dolphins, manatees and sea turtles that live in the surrounding waters. The island is pet-friendly and has amenities such as restrooms and a restaurant selling snacks and cold drinks.

14.  Haulover Beach Park

Where: Miami-Dade County

Looking to get an all-over tan? Then this is the beach for you. Haulover Beach Park offers a rare clothing-optional section, located on the northern one-third of the largest remaining stretch of undeveloped beachfront in Miami-Dade County, right between lifeguard towers #12 and #16. Beach ambassadors sporting green safari hats are on hand to provide etiquette tips on navigating the nude beach, and restrooms, umbrella, chair rentals and concessions are all on offer.

15.  Madeira Beach

Where: Madeira Beach

This two-mile stretch of beach is located on a Gulf coast barrier island, and John’s Pass Park, on the south end, is a quiet location for soaking up the sun. Parking, chair rentals and covered picnic areas are all available. California is home to 1,271 miles of shoreline, with expansive state beaches, reserves and local beach hot spots along its coast. Whether your idea of a beach day involves swimming, surfing, hiking, sunbathing or just people-watching, there’s a beach for you.

But with so many developed and undeveloped beaches to explore, narrowing your options can be daunting. If you’re visiting the Golden State, or just want to discover more of the state’s sand and sea, these are the best beaches in California to visit.

1. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

You’ll find Point Lobos State Natural Reserve along California’s central coast. It’s accessible on Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) 1, a few miles south of the quaint community of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

It’s been described by artists as “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world” because of its picturesque cliff sides and seascapes. Point Lobos SNR offers rich scuba diving and snorkeling opportunities due to its 70-foot-tall kelp beds.

If you'd rather stay dry, stop by for a daytime hike, picnic or just stroll through this ecological gem. Chances are you’ll leave with plenty of fresh air and breathtaking pictures as a lasting memento.

2. Baker Beach

Baker Beach is nestled at the base of San Francisco’s Presidio shoreline. It offers an iconic view of the Golden Gate Bridge, with miles of Pacific Ocean between Baker’s shore and the Marin Headlands across the way.

The 1-mile beach is a popular destination for locals and visitors so don’t expect to feel secluded. Still it lends itself to sunbathers or picnickers who want to catch a glimpse of local sea life, like dolphins. The Sand Ladder also offers beach-accessible hiking trails to the California Coastal Trail or the winding Batteries to Bluffs Trail.

Even when San Francisco’s infamous fog rolls through, visitors can appreciate the atmospheric mood it creates.

3. Pfeiffer Beach

Pfeiffer Beach is one of the best California beaches near PCH 1. For many, just appreciating Pfeiffer’s iconic views from the lookout point along the highway is enough. But if you want to get your toes on the sand and are willing to drive over 2 miles down the very narrow Sycamore Canyon Road, you can access the shore.

At the end of the forested road, you’ll find a small parking lot where you can foot it the rest of the way to the beach. There you can discover sand dunes, active tide pools and gorgeous photo-worthy rock arches and caves for wandering, including Keyhole Rock.

Get here early to grab one of only four picnic tables that are first come, first served. Pfeiffer is also dog-friendly, but leashes are required.

4. Pismo State Beach

Pismo State Beach is in the central California town of Oceano. This beach has a little bit of everything — it’s popular for on-beach camping (reservations required), swimming, bird-watching and more. It also has abundant walking trails through the sand dunes.

If you visit between late October and February, you might be able to observe Western monarch butterflies. This species migrates into the Monarch Butterfly Grove shelter, which is just a half-mile south of Pismo Beach.

5. El Matador State Beach

El Matador is one of three pocket beaches within the Robert H. Meyer Memorial State Beaches cluster. It’s just off PCH in Malibu and is more intimately sized compared to other beaches on this list.

There’s a small parking lot on the bluff, or you can park along the PCH (just pay attention to parking restrictions on signage). A somewhat steep dirt path from the bluff leads down to the sand.

Despite its smaller footprint, El Matador rewards visitors with stunning rock formations and sea caves. It’s the perfect location for taking photos, snorkeling, swimming or just to sunbathe and relax. There are many bold seagulls looking for their next snack so keep unsupervised food hidden.

6. Venice Beach

If you’re looking for the best beach in California purely for people-watching, and nothing else, head to Venice Beach in Los Angeles. The area is known for its quirkiness, and you’ll spot all walks of life along the Venice Boardwalk. It doubles as a busy tourist area, but — coming from a native Angeleno — it’s an essential California beach experience nonetheless.

Watch street performances, stop by the skate park or check out the historic Muscle Beach Gym, which California’s very own ex-governor Arnold Schwarzenegger once frequented. You’ll also find crafts and wares by local artists, and don’t forget to grab an elote or fresh fruit from a local street vendor while you’re there.

If the boardwalk isn’t your scene, bring a bike or rent one and ride along the dedicated winding paved path through Venice Beach. Or you can just roll out a blanket on the sand and get vitamin D while having restaurants and restrooms within reach.

7. Manhattan Beach

If a quintessential sandy, swimmable beach is what you’re after, head to Manhattan Beach in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. It offers 115 acres of beach with ample parking along its 2-mile stretch.

Compared to other beaches along the westside of L.A., Manhattan Beach offers an expanse of sandy shores and cleaner water for avid swimmers. At the northernmost point of Manhattan Beach is El Porto, a popular destination for local surfers. There are also public volleyball nets throughout, and fishing is welcome on the pier.

8. Crystal Cove Beach

Located in the city of Laguna Beach in Orange County, Crystal Cove Beach welcomes visitors with a sun-drenched belt of sand. Here, you can explore the tide pools in the area, dip in the water, bird watch or scuba dive off the edge of the shore.

The beach is hugged by dramatic bluffs and offers access to the area's 18 miles of hiking trails. You can find high and low trails that offer impressive vista views as well as sweeping California’s backcountry with native flora and fauna.
