Viking Venus

Launched in May 2021 from Portsmouth, England, Viking Venus features modern amenities and a contemporary design. The ship can hold 930 passengers and 465 crew members. Amenities include multiple pools and shops, as well as a cinema, a live performance theater, a jazz lounge, a spa, a fitness center and a salon. Plus, you can attend a lecture or discussion with the onboard historian, who helps educate passengers on the cultural aspects of each destination. An onboard cooking school, The Kitchen Table, also allows guests to learn about each destination's unique cuisine. 

Cruisers can enjoy daily updated food options at The Restaurant, diverse cuisine at the World Café, expertly paired tasting menus at The Chef's Table and Italian favorites at Manfredi's Italian Restaurant. Seven Seas Splendor

Debuted in September 2021, the 746-passenger, 548-crew member Seven Seas Splendor is the newest ship within the Regent fleet. Seven Seas Splendor – along with most of the line's other ships – takes opulence to the next level by equipping each suite with its own private balcony. Other standard in-room amenities include interactive flat-screen TVs, luxurious bath products, bathrobes and slippers, signature queen-size beds and dining tables for two. There are 10 suite categories available, ranging from the smallest Veranda (307 square feet) and Deluxe Veranda suites (308 to 361 square feet) to the largest Regent (4,443 square feet) and Master suites (1,895 to 2,108 square feet). 

Guests have a wide array of things to do while on board. Spend your days relaxing at the spa, playing paddle tennis or bocce ball, working up a sweat on the jogging track or taking a dip in the ship's two whirlpools and two pools, one of which is an infinity-edge pool that stretches along the edge of the ship, providing swimmers with exceptional views of the ocean. The 930-passenger Viking Sky – which debuted in February 2017 – receives rave reviews from past cruisers for its port-heavy itineraries (fares include one complimentary excursion per port) and luxurious, comfortable staterooms. Cabins offer between 270 and 1,448 square feet of space and include balconies, complimentary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs and bathrooms with heated floors, among other amenities. Those who opt for an upgraded stateroom or suite are treated to additional perks, like priority reservations at the spa and specialty restaurants.

Viking Sky's activities include classes at the fitness center, treatments at the spa and destination-focused lectures. The ship also offers two pools and two whirlpools, including an infinity pool on the stern of the ship. In the evenings, passengers can enjoy live performances in the theater or watch destination-related movies in one of two cinemas.

Viking Mars

Viking's newest ship, the Viking Mars accommodates 930 passengers and, since it's a smaller vessel, it can dock in many ports where some of the larger ocean-faring cruise ships can't reach. The all-veranda accommodations on this ship, which debuted in May 2022, range in size from around 270 square feet to 1,448 square feet. In-room amenities include free Wi-Fi access, flat-screen TVs, safes, minibars filled with drinks and snacks, robes, slippers and 24-hour room service.

Visitors will find a relaxing spa, a hair salon, a yoga area and a well-equipped indoor fitness center (plus an outdoor fitness center) aboard the ship. Those looking to unwind with a book in one hand and a cocktail in the other should snag a cozy spot in The Living Room. Like other Viking ships, the Viking Mars offers educational programming, lectures, cooking classes and more on board.

Cruisers can also enjoy amenities like the main pool and hot tub, the infinity pool, the cinema, the theater, a jazz lounge and various bars. Dining options on this ship include Manfredi's Italian Restaurant, Aquavit Terrace, World Café, The Chef's Table and The Kitchen Table.

Viking Mars receives rave reviews from recent cruisers. The variety of excursions, the delectable onboard dining and the comfortable cabins are a few things previous guests highlighted as superb. However, the staff received mixed reviews: Some experienced attentive and friendly employees, while a few noted they were expecting better service across the board for the price point.

Resilient Lady

An adults-only, LGBTQ-friendly cruise ship, Resilient Lady has a capacity of 2,770 passengers and 1,150 crew members. With onboard experiences ranging from acrobatic performances to comedy shows to themed parties, Resilient Lady is best for travelers who are seeking an upbeat and social atmosphere.  

When you've worked up an appetite from your activity-filled day, grab a bite at one of the ship's 20-plus eateries, which serve everything from Mexican to Asian to Italian fare. Viking Jupiter

Debuted in February 2019, Viking Jupiter is the cruise line's sixth ocean vessel. The ship sleeps up to 930 guests in luxurious staterooms that include everything from large bathrooms to comfortable king-sized beds. As an added bonus, each room is equipped with free Wi-Fi access.

Travelers will have the opportunity to indulge in several onboard activities. They can visit the spa's snow grotto and chill beneath the snowflakes, go for a swim in the infinity pool or let their worries melt away in the hot tub. The Bar and The Living Room offer additional spaces to unwind with a cocktail or mingle with fellow cruisers.

For afternoon tea and light snacks, travelers can stop by Wintergarden, or for a heartier meal, the main dining room, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant or World Café offer scrumptious European delicacies, Chinese fare and everything in between. Viking Star

Debuted in 2015, Viking Star was the fleet's first ocean liner. Welcoming up to 930 passengers, the ship features all-veranda staterooms ranging from 270 to 1,448 square feet. The Owner's Suite offers a dining area that can seat six, an ocean view dry sauna and a 12-seat boardroom, among other amenities.

Beyond their rooms, passengers will find a spa, several shops, a theater that hosts live performances and lectures, two cinemas for screening movies and two pools, including a glass-backed infinity pool cantilevered off the stern.

There are eight dining options to choose from, all with no additional charge or fee. For fine dining, there's The Restaurant, Manfredi's Italian Restaurant and The Chef's Table, which touts a multicourse tasting menu with wine pairings. Holland America is marking a major milestone this year celebrating its 150th Anniversary . In the late 1800s, Holland first sailed immigrants looking for a new start from Europe to America. 5. Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line , or NCL, is known for bringing “freestyle cruising” to the industry. That means cruising the way you want, on your schedule, to enjoy your vacation, your way. You can leave your tux at home, there aren’t any set dinner times, and you’re not assigned to dine with the same group every night.

Oceania also maximizes its time in port with extended stays, immersive “Go Local” and “Go Green” excursions, and small group sizes. There’s evening entertainment, shopping, and even a casino on board, so you’ll need a variety of outfits to transition from day to night .

According to Clabbers, this small luxury cruise line is perfect for those who prefer “a smaller, more casual yacht-style experience.” Per the pro, the onboard vibes are best described as “upscale, but not stuffy or over-the-top.” It’s also worth noting that “each ship offers a water sports platform with kayaks, water trampolines, stand-up paddling, snorkel gear, floating carpets, and other ‘toys’ that are deployed (weather and location permitting, of course) at least once on most Greek itineraries.” 

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Windstar’s Greece itineraries, Clabbers is quick to call out the popular Treasures of the Greek Isles voyage, which sets sail each week from May through October. Passengers can visit beloved ports of call like Mykonos and Santorini, along with “lesser-known (and less-crowded!) places like Monemvasia and Patmos.” As part of the experience, guests have the unique opportunity to feast among the ruins in neighboring Turkey as part of the line’s complimentary Evening in Ephesus “after-hours” event, which, per Clabbers, features a decadent five-course dinner accompanied by a chamber orchestra. Speaking of culinary offerings, it’s worth mentioning that Windstar is the official cruise line partner of the esteemed James Beard Foundation, which means you can expect some of the top eats at sea.

Explora Journeys

“A new entrant in the luxury travel industry, Explora Journeys offers all the style and comfort of a modern European luxury resort property on its 922-guest yacht-inspired Explora I and, launching later this year, Explora II, ” explains Clabbers. The line has taken the industry by storm, doing away with cliche cruise staples like main dining rooms, large buffets, and notoriously small staterooms. Instead, says Clabbers, guests can choose from a selection of “excellent restaurants that other companies would call specialty restaurants,” as well as “four swimming pools, each with their own vibe,” and all-suite accommodations, some of which boast private plunge pools. Per the pro, it’s worth noting that “Explora Journeys is the first luxury line that offers a dedicated youth activity program and facility year-round;” as such, it’s an excellent option for multi-generational families looking to cruise Greece in style. 

Itinerary: Sailing round-trip from Athens, the aptly named eight-night A Journey from Athens to Athens itinerary includes a mix of popular ports like Mykonos and Santorini, along with hidden-gem locales like Syros, which is famous for its neoclassical architecture, a buzzy main town, and (essentially) crowd-free beaches. The cruise also visits the serene resort town of Marmaris in Turkey before heading to its final port of call, Kos , a gorgeous Greek island known for its sandy beaches, white-washed buildings, and historical sites.

Celebrity Cruises

According to Clabbers, " Celebrity Cruises was launched by a Greek shipping family," so the line has deep ties to — and many officers who hail from — the country. What’s more, he says, "When you visit Greece, they are taking you to their homeland, and it shows in their passion and love of the Hellenic nation." The line offers a range of larger ships and, thus, more options between accommodations (from economical inside rooms to luxurious suites in The Retreat), itineraries, restaurants, and entertainment; as such, Celebrity is "a great option for adults and families who like more activities on their ship." 

Itinerary: The nine-night Best Of Greece itinerary cruises round-trip from Athens on select dates from May to October and takes place aboard the 2,170-passenger Celebrity Infinity , which Clabbers described as one of the line’s “smaller and more seasoned ships.” The first port of call is Santorini, followed by Ephesus in Turkey and Mykonos. “Additionally,” says Clabbers, " Infinity   travels to Volos and Thessaloniki, ports that are not typically visited by large ships.” Kavala, located in the northern part of the country, serves as the final port of call before heading back to Athens. Here, cruisers can enjoy a mix of history, culture, and architecture — plus some seriously stunning landscapes (from lagoons and lakes to wetlands and beaches) along with lush flora and fauna.

Silversea offers a variety of Greece cruise itineraries, and it’s one of few truly luxe all-inclusive cruise lines. Per Clabbers, the 596-passenger Silver Moon offers all-suite accommodations and a classic small-ship feel — complete with excellent meals, beverages, and shore excursions all included in your cruise fare. Speaking of the latter, he says, “The inclusion of shore excursions also makes it easy to dive deeper into Greek culture and culinary experiences.” 

Itinerary: While you can’t go wrong with any of Silversea’s Greek itineraries, Clabbers especially recommends the seven-night Athens to Athens cruise, which “calls on highlights, but adds places like Souda Bay in Crete, Nafplion, Patmos, and Rhodes ,” where he recommends visiting the “temple ruins at Lindos, with views over the Mediterranean, and then walk in the footsteps of the Crusaders in the old town.” The cruise also stops in Nafplion, which, despite its romantic seaside setting and lovely beaches, is yet to be uncovered by most American travelers — for now, at least.

Variety Cruises

According to T+L A-list travel advisor and small ship specialist Mary Curry , this local Greek cruise line offers its own fleet of yachts, most carrying fewer than 50 passengers. Since the ships are so small, says Curry, “you can travel a bit further off the beaten path.” Variety offers a handful of Greece itineraries, including specially themed hiking and wine cruises.

Itinerary: Travelers craving a true off-the-beaten-path experience can book the seven-night Unexplored Greece voyage, which sails round-trip from Athens. The first port of call is Ikira, a tiny island known for its hot springs that also happens to be one of the world’s Blue Zones. Then, it’s off to Patmos, known for its fascinating history and unspoiled beaches, before overnighting in Lipsi, a laid-back isle famous for its gorgeous scenery. On board, guests can taste the destination’s famous wine, Aposperitis. The fun continues in Levintha, inhabited by a single family who raises animals and runs a restaurant where guests can enjoy fresh-caught fish. After, it’s off to Amorgos, where scenic hiking and beautiful beaches abound. The next day, you’ll stop at Panagia Hozoviotissa, a cliffside monastery dating back to the 10th century, before heading to Koufonisia, which boasts majestic caves and rock pools accessible only by boat (thankfully, Variety as you covered). The final stop of the day is the serene island of Iraklia, which offers clear-blue waters ideal for swimming. After remaining here overnight, you’ll head to the final port of call, Serifos, where guests can visit a remote beach, followed by an onboard BBQ feast to refuel before heading to Chora, a fairy-tale village.

This French-owned cruise line offers an impressive fleet of small luxury ships. Additionally, says Curry, “Most cabins have private balconies, and travelers who plan early are rewarded with excellent value for the money.” What’s especially unique about Pontant, explains the pro, is that they “partner with Smithsonian Journeys on select departures to offer an enrichment program of included lectures and shore excursions in each port.”

Itinerary: Curry especially recommends the seven-night Cruising the Greek Islands of the Southern Aegean sailing, which will cruise round-trip from Athens in July and October 2025. The cruise calls on aforementioned spots like Patmos, Rhodes, and Amorgos before visiting Adamas in Milos, a volcanic island teeming with postcard-worthy white-washed towns and breathtakingly beautiful beaches. Adamas itself is a tiny fishing port where colorful boats shimmer against the blue waters. Finally, it’s off to Mykonos and Napflion before finally disembarking in Athens.

Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is world-famous for its exciting onboard offerings for children of all ages — including character and superhero meet-and-greets, dining options themed after beloved Disney princesses, and live performances galore — making it a favorite for families hoping for a fun-filled Greece vacation.

Itinerary: "Setting sail aboard the Disney Dream on the seven-night Mediterranean with Greek Isles itinerary is nothing short of magical!" says Megan Guinnup , a travel agent with Marvelous Mouse Travels . Cruising round-trip from Rome, the ship calls on Naples before exploring Greece. In addition to popular ports like Athens and Mykonos, you'll also visit Chania on the island of Crete, which offers a bustling harbor, exquisite architecture, and cobblestone streets that look like they were plucked straight from a (Disney) fairy tale. After exploring each locale, the fun continues back on board, where, per the pro, "there is enchantment everywhere — meeting beloved characters, enjoying deck parties with Mickey and Minnie, and indulging in exquisite cuisine."

Royal Caribbean

This mega-ship line truly has it all: Flashy entertainment and onboard activities — which, depending on the ship, can include everything from water slides to zip lines — and plenty of drinking and dining offerings to appease even the pickiest eaters. Guinnup and Kari Dillon, owner of Marvelous Mouse Travels, recommend setting sail aboard Odyssey of the Seas , which offers several Greek itineraries. "On board," says Guinnup, "There's a plethora of activities to enjoy, from bumper cars and roller skating to exquisite dining and a bionic bar — there's something for everyone!"

Itinerary: The seven-night Greek Isles itinerary sails round-trip from Rome with stops in Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Naples. Keep in mind that because the ship is so large, Santorini and Mykonos are both tender ports. With that in mind, Dillon recommends springing on The Key, an optional add-on that includes priority tender access so that you can spend as much time as possible on land basking in its beauty.

Virgin Voyages

Richard Branson’s adults-only line has taken the industry by storm with its innovative offerings, including 20-plus restaurants instead of buffets, an onboard tattoo parlor, adult-focused entertainment offerings, and a two-story nightclub.

Itinerary: Dillon especially recommends the seven-night Greek Island Aglow itinerary for travelers seeking a high-energy, adults-only option. She continues, telling T+L, “Not only does this sail to the islands of Santorini and Rhodes, but it [also] has an overnight in Mykonos, which is world-famous for its lively party atmosphere.” As a bonus, the cruise also calls on Bodrum in Turkey, which boasts beautiful beaches, flower-filled cafes, and a bustling nightlife scene.

Celestyal Cruises

The Greece-based Celesytal Cruises prides itself on offering an authentic Greek vacation experience. Additionally, Celesytal is unique in that it offers year-round Aegean Sea sailings cruising round-trip from Athens and ranging in length from three to 14 nights. On land, Celeystal guests can choose from a selection of the line’s “Authentic Excursions,” which are specially curated, small-group, expert-led experiences designed to take travelers off the beaten path. Options — including walking food tours and pottery-making demos at a local factory — abound, depending on the particular port of call.

Itinerary: The seven-night Idyllic Aegean voyage visits Thessaloniki (which offers an eclectic combination of history, nightlife, and gastronomy), Kuşadası (a popular Turkish resort town), and Heraklion (the capital of Crete) before heading to iconic isles like Santorini and Mykonos, where the ship will remain overnight. The Alternative to Huge Cruises? 3 Masts, 28 Sails and Wind Power.

We checked out the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit on a Mediterranean cruise. In this era of gargantuan ships, its elegant clipper design, wooden decks and relatively small size stands out.

From the bridge of the three-masted windjammer, the Sea Cloud Spirit , the captain called out the words we’d all been waiting for.

“Let’s set the sails!” he cried, after turning off the engines, while maneuvering to maintain an optimum angle for his 18 deckhands to climb into the shrouds and unfurl the ship’s 44,132 square feet of sails by hand.

Like acrobats, the crew scurried up the masts to the upper topgallant sails that rose nearly 200 feet above us. The ship’s captain, Vukota Stojanovic, later insisted that none of it was for show. “Whenever there is an opportunity to sail, we sail,” he said.

For the next hour, the crew hauled the ropes until the 28 sails were billowing in the wind, propelling the 452-foot-long ship — the world’s largest passenger sailing vessel on which the sails are raised by hand — toward its first port of call, Portofino, Italy.

At a time when cruise lines are packing their ever-more-gargantuan ships with water parks and basketball courts, the 136-passenger Sea Cloud Spirit, with its old-fashioned clipper design and wooden decks, stands out. It is the newest ship from the Hamburg-based Sea Cloud Cruises , and while it is the company’s biggest, Sea Cloud said it wanted to leave space for passengers to connect to the surrounding elements.

“Wherever you are on the ship, it feels like you are sitting on the water,” said Amelia Dominick, 71, a retired real estate agent from Cologne, Germany, who was on her third cruise onboard the Sea Cloud Spirit.

I had arrived for a four-night “taster sailing” from Nice, France, to the Ligurian region of Italy, designed to entice passengers to sign up for a longer cruise. Here’s what I found.

The ship and cabins

The Spirit has many comforts and luxuries, including a fitness center, library, hair salon and a spa with a Finnish sauna that overlooks the sea. The deck layouts are spacious, with nooks carved out for privacy and relaxation.

Sixty-nine spacious cabins have windows that open onto the sea. My room, a junior suite on the third deck, had two large arched windows, mahogany tables, a balcony and a comfortable couch and armchair. The marble bathroom was lavish, with a gold-plated sink and large jetted bathtub.

The elegant interior design is inspired by the original Sea Cloud, built in 1931 for Marjorie Merriweather Post, the American heiress of the General Foods Corporation, with glossy wooden panels and gold trimmings. The Sea Cloud was the largest private sailing yacht in the world before Post handed it over to the U.S. Navy for use as a weather-reporting vessel during World War II. The four-mast, 64-passenger ship has since been restored to its former glory and will sail across the Aegean and Adriatic this summer.

The experience felt authentic — even before the sails were set — with a detailed safety drill. On most cruises, the drill entails a safety video and signing in at an assembly point. But here, passengers put on their life jackets and walked through emergency scenarios that included rationing food supplies and fishing from the lifeboat.

Each day, the sails were set, even during heavy rain and wind speeds over 30 knots. Guests wanting to participate in the rigging are usually invited to do so, but the weather conditions made it too risky for this sailing.

“It was amazing to watch the work go into putting the sails up and down and to experience the wind power pulling the ship so fast without the engines,” said Malte Rahnenfuehrer, a 50-year-old psychologist from Zurich, who was traveling with his partner and two children.

The captain

It is rare for cruise passengers to see the ship’s captain after the initial welcome drinks or gala dinner. But Capt. Vukota Stojanovic was omnipresent throughout the cruise, from setting sails to lifeguarding to mingling with guests.

Originally from Montenegro, Captain Stojanovic piloted container ships for years. When he was asked to consider helming the original Sea Cloud nearly 10 years ago, he hesitated because he had no experience sailing. Even after he learned the ropes — and there are 340 ropes (known as running rigging) on the vessel — he was unsure. “I grew to love the sailings, the boats, the crew the lifestyle, but I still felt I belonged on container ships,” he said. “It would be a big adjustment, especially because I would have to shave every day,” he joked.

Eventually, he accepted the opportunity and worked tirelessly to learn how to sail and operate the ship. Today, he keeps an “open bridge” policy, allowing passengers to visit the control room, even when he is wrestling with the wind.

“The crew and the passengers are all part of the experience, and I like to meet people and receive their feedback,” Captain Stojanovic said.

Environment

Sea Cloud Cruises aspires to take a “gentle” approach, using wind power to drive its ships wherever possible, even if that means changing course for optimal weather conditions. When sailing is not possible, the Spirit has two diesel-electric engines that run on low-sulfur marine diesel fuel. The company is also working with ports that have shore power capabilities to plug into the local electric power.

Onboard, there is an emphasis on reusable bottles and paper straws, and crew members separate solid waste to be compacted and removed when in port.

Excursions and Activities

We made stops in Portofino, San Remo, Italy, and St.-Tropez, France, anchoring offshore and getting to land by tender — a contrast to the big cruise ships with their loud horns and thick plumes of exhaust spewing from their funnels.

For passengers wanting to take a dip (there is no pool), the crew marked an area in the water with floats and an inflatable slide. The water was frigid, but many passengers took the plunge from the swimming deck. Guests could also take “Zodiac Safaris” around the ship to get views of the vessel from the water.

Excursions ranged from food and wine tours to e-biking and beach trips. In Portofino, passengers were free to explore the sights independently, including the Castello Brown Fortress and the lighthouse on Punta del Capo rock. There was ample time to eat meals on shore as the ship did not depart until 11 p.m. Over the summer, the Sea Cloud Spirit will sail to Spain, Portugal, France and the Azores, among other destinations. On Nov. 11, she will depart for St. Maarten in the Caribbean for the winter.

Wherever the vessel goes, said Mirell Reyes, president of Sea Cloud Cruise for North America, the company tries to “stay away from the crowds and ports where big cruise ships spit out 6,000 passengers.”

Summer prices, which include food and beverages, range from $3,995 for a four-night sailing in a superior cabin to $9,420 for a veranda suite. Seven-night sailings cost between $6,995 and $16,495.

Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs. 

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price. 

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

Viking Cruises

If you’re searching for a cruise line for adults, Viking should be on the top of your list. The cruise line is best known for their ocean, river and expedition cruises for adults 18 and over. According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

3. Seabourn

This luxurious cruise line provides an intimate and personalized experience that will make you feel like you’re vacationing on a yacht. Per their website, their ships can carry between 264 and 600 guests at time (compared to Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas can hold over 5,000 passengers). As a result, the bookings are extremely popular and limited. (In fact, it appears that most of their summer dates are already sold out.) While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

4. Celebrity

While Celebrity allows travelers of all ages to board their ships, travel site  Sophisticated Travel  found that most passengers are between their 40s and 50s. As  one redditor commented , “[I] have cruised Celebrity a few times. They have a few amenities for kids, so there are [a] few kids. [However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season. 

The cruise line prides itself on its extensive food and beverage options, using world-renowned chef dishes in their specialty restaurants and a wide selection of cocktails at your disposal. Plus, fun entertainment and  nightlife events  exclusively for adults like the Undercover, which is an exhibition inspired by the 1920s, and the Jazz Joint that turns the ship’s signature club into a speakeasy. Plus, most ships feature the Solarium, a space only for adults to lounge around and explore the inside pool minus kids.

Oceania Cruises only has six ships, but it’s been around since the early aughts. They sail around the world with destinations to New Zealand, Asia, Africa and 130 other locations. In fact, Oceania offers some of the longest stays on this list. Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared. 

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint. 

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

7. holland america line, holland america line.

A cruise line owned by Carnival (a popular family-friend cruise company), Holland America Line is possibly the oldest cruise line of the bunch. It dates back to 1873 and was used as cargo and transportation service. Today, the ships are used for leisure as they travel all around the world, docking in the likes of Hawaii and Japan. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40. 

A standout feature of their newer ships is the entertainment on board. If you’re a music lover, ships like the Rotterdam and Koningsdam have the B.B King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Lounge that cater to playing the classic hits. Holland America Line also partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to provide state of the art pickleball courts with impeccable views, as well as a casino and a spa, so every guest can find an activity they can enjoy on vacation.

Owned by Norwegian Cruise Line, Regent has been around for 30 years and continues to be a popular pick for older adults. As  one travel critic shared , the cruise line has an average of passengers that are over 40 on their ships due to its all-inclusive regent experience. The 2-in-1 deal features round-trip flight, unlimited shore excursions, unlimited Wi-Fi and more. They also stand apart from their competitors with their suite-only accommodations. Per  their website , Regent promises incredible ocean views and a private balcony just for you. Plus, 24-hour room service and all the traditional amenities (i.e., spa, fitness center and casino) that makes a cruise worthwhile.

Silversea is a luxury cruise line that’s great for romantic getaways. Once you step on board, you’re treated to  personalized service  (like 24-hour butler service), part of the inclusive package for each guest. Similar to Regent, there’s unlimited shore excursions, so you can explore every port on your trip. The fleet reaches about 900 destinations, including Galápagos Island, French Polynesia and Antarctica. The cruise line also offers complimentary beverages and fine dining. The most popular is the S.A.L.T Kitchen, which provides dishes based on your destinations. There’s even a more exclusive chef option only on their Nova-class ships for a more intimate setting. It offers the same experience with more food and wine options ready to try out.

10. princess cruises, princess cruises.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Additionally, all Princess ships have many ways to unwind and have fun that cater toward adults, like including their spa, theaters and pool decks.In fact, their latest ship, the Sun Princess, also has the Sanctuary, a pool area set apart from the rest of the ship that’s strictly for adults, so you can lounge under the sun all day without interruption.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean

You might think the best time to cruise the Mediterranean would be summer because that's when the most ships are cruising in Europe. But I'd argue that other times of year are better.

You'll find ships cruising in the Med year-round, so there's never a time when you can't cruise at all. You'll find the most ships and itinerary choices in summer during peak season and the fewest during winter's off season. Spring and fall are considered the shoulder season, when the Mediterranean cruise season is gearing up or winding down.

Taking into account price, weather and crowds, plus choices of ships and ports, I believe the best time to cruise the Mediterranean is during the shoulder season. Specifically, I prefer April. As your decision might be based on entirely different factors, let's dive into the variables to determine the best time for you to head to the region and hop on a cruise ship.

Introduction to Mediterranean geography

The Mediterranean Sea consists of 11 smaller seas. Shopping for Mediterranean cruises can be confusing because some cruise lines like to label their itineraries according to the smaller sea names.

You might find cruises to the Adriatic, between Italy's east coast and the central European countries of Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro and Albania; these will take you to ports such as Venice, Italy, and Dubrovnik, Croatia. Aegean cruises traverse the large open sea between Greece and Turkey and go as far south as Crete, with stops in Athens and Santorini in Greece and Istanbul in Turkey. Sailings through the Ionian Sea, located between the sole of Italy's boot and western Greece, bring you to the Italian island of Sicily and the Greek island of Corfu.

All of these cruise destinations are considered Mediterranean, along with Monaco, the southern coasts of France and Spain, and even Israel. Ports in Portugal are also included in Mediterranean cruise itineraries. Even though it doesn't have any coastline on the Mediterranean Sea, Portugal is considered part of the Mediterranean region.

The best time to cruise the Mediterranean based on choices of ships and itineraries

Cruise lines that sail the region all year include Viking , MSC Cruises , Costa , Celestyal and Norwegian Cruise Line . But while you might be able to cruise the Mediterranean in winter, your choice of ports is somewhat limited. We found no sailings to the popular ports of Corfu, Dubrovnik or Koper, Slovenia in December or January.

Most of the winter offerings cruise the western ports of Italy, plus France, and westward to Barcelona. There are a handful of longer sailings that sail from Athens or include Istanbul, western Turkey, Israel and even Alexandria, Egypt. Among popular cruise lines, only Viking includes stops in Santorini in winter, and only Costa offers cruises that include Venice in the winter. Norwegian's winter Mediterranean itineraries are focused on Spain and Portugal.

Spring and early summer bring more ships and more port choices. Beginning in March, we found dozens of ships scheduled to visit Venice, Corfu and Santorini. Holland America , Princess , Seabourn , Oceania and Regent Seven Seas Cruises all have ships ready to sail the Med in March. In April, the list of mainstream, premium and luxury lines cruising Mediterranean waters grows larger, and includes Windstar , Royal Caribbean , Silversea and Celebrity Cruises .

By June, the choice of cruise lines and itineraries is at its peak. Among the mainstream lines, only Carnival Cruise Line is still absent in June, opting instead to sail a short season of 10-and 11-night cruises in September and October.

Most ships stay in Europe through summer before beginning a global dispersion between October and November. Disney Cruise Line is the first to leave, with its last summer Mediterranean sailing usually falling in July. Celebrity is among the last to leave, often continuing its Mediterranean cruises well into December and even January, incorporating the holiday season.

If your dream is to see Venice or Santorini, or to cruise with one of the mainstream lines, you can rule out winter but should find ample choices between March and October. By the end of November, the number of ships calling at Mediterranean ports has dropped to winter levels.

The best time for a Mediterranean sailing based on prices and crowds

If your ideal Mediterranean cruise doesn't include crowds, winter is a good choice, other than December holiday weeks. But most travelers will prefer a little more warmth and a larger choice of ports while still prioritizing a good price and lighter crowds.

Across the board, from mainstream to luxury, Mediterranean cruise fares peak in June, July and August. Prices for big-ship cruises varied by as much as $60 per person per night between spring sailings and summer. On luxury lines like Silversea, spring cruise fares were hundreds of dollars cheaper per person per night compared to summer fares. March sees an upward tick in rates due to spring break travel. The best deals we found outside of winter fell in April and November.

To decide what crowds would look like in various months, we looked at two popular ports where the effect of multiple ships is felt the most -- Santorini and Venice. Visit Santorini in June or July and you will find yourself fighting for breathing room among as many as 15,000 other cruise ship passengers.

Compare that with an April or November stop there, where the daily cruise passenger load tops out around 3,000. We found days in April where only one or two mid-sized ships were scheduled to be in port.

I've been to Santorini when four mid-sized ships (approximately 5,000 passengers) were in port and found it challenging to walk through the narrow maze of shops, restaurants and hotels. It was crowded enough that I was concerned about returning to the ship on time because the lines at the cable car that takes cruise passengers down the cliffs to the tender dock were so long. With 15,000 people in port, I don't know how you'd be able to walk through town at all. Santorini is a good-sized island, but most of the things cruisers want to see are perched on the narrow rim of the cliffs.

Venice has recently cut back on its cruise tourism capacity, in part by forcing some ships to dock in alternate ports and bring guests to the city by bus. We included passenger counts from Trieste, Ravenna and Venice and found June numbers as high as 6,000 passengers arriving, but as low as 4,000. Cruise passenger arrivals in April are typically below 3,000 per day. The numbers are lower than Santorini — but then, Venice has a far more complicated crowd control scenario.

If avoiding high prices and crowd congestion is your priority, rule out summer months and stick with either winter or the shoulder seasons of spring and fall.

The best time to cruise the Med based on weather

Temperatures remain moderate across most of the Mediterranean year-round, but even Istanbul can be chilly, with an average high temperature of 48 degrees in January. Athens, Rome, Barcelona and most of the Greek islands see temperatures in the mid- to upper-50s in December and January, warming slightly in February.

Summer temperatures can be brutal in the larger cities. Athens reaches 90 degrees and higher on a regular basis in July and August. Rome and Barcelona average roughly 2 degrees cooler than that in the summer.

Rain is more common across the Mediterranean in October and November than most other months, but the average monthly rainfall, even in the fall, is three inches or less. The northern ports in the Adriatic see a bit more rain than most of the Med. Don't forget the famed Acqua Alta, or mega-tides in Venice, which will leave you sloshing through St. Mark's Square in rubber boots. Though a genuinely rare occurrence, the high tides are most likely to happen in November and December, making them a concern when booking a cruise on one of the handful of ships with November stops in Venice.

If chilly, hot or wet weather are deciding factors for your Mediterranean cruise, rule out January, February and December for the chill, July and August for the heat, and October, November and December for rain and tides. That leaves March, April, May, June and September as the best weather months for cruising in the Mediterranean.

Bottom line

Everyone has their own reasoning for the timing of a cruise. Yours might include traveling while school is out or maximizing time at the beach. Perhaps you are loyal to one particular cruise line or have your heart set on cruising on a newly launched ship.

Whatever your reasons, there is not a bad time to cruise the Mediterranean. My favorite is April for the confluence of reasonable fares, pleasant weather, manageable crowds and an abundance of itinerary and ship choices, but I have loved sailings in other months as well.

My advice is simple: Even if I think shoulder-season months are the best time to cruise the Mediterranean, go when it works best for you and your travel partners. Because a dream cruise in Europe, even with less-than-ideal weather or annoying crowds, is better than no cruise at all.

Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s Pre-Wedding Celebrations Continue With a Multi-Day Mediterranean Cruise

Radhika Merchant and Anant Ambani’s wedding isn’t until July—but the celebrations are already very much underway.

It began with the couple’s grand hastakshar in March, which was held at Ambanis' home in Jamnagar, Gujarat. And in May, it continued with a four-day cruise that made multiple stops throughout the Mediterranean.

“It was a retreat for the people that have contributed to our life in different ways,” Radhika Merchant says of the event. The 1,200-person guest list included their friends and family, as well as employees at the Ambani family company Reliance Industries; the Merchant family company of Encore Healthcare; and Anant’s animal sanctuary Vantara. Even the family’s doctors were on board. “We had people from the ages of six months going up to 90 years,” Radhika says.

When it came to deciding on a location for the event, the couple quickly settled on Europe, as many of their guests—including Radhika’s family and many of their close friends from studying in America—were unable to make it to their hastakshar in India due to the distance. Meanwhile, they chose a cruise ship as the venue after struggling to find a destination that could accommodate such a large group.

The cruise’s events began in Palermo, Sicily, with a welcome lunch. At night, as they sailed up the Italian coast, the Ambanis held a starry-night-themed formal party.

For the first event, Radhika wore a gown designed by Robert Wun. Printed on the chiffon was a love letter that Anant wrote to her when she was 22. “He wrote me this long letter for my birthday about what I mean to him,” Radhika says. “I wanted it for posterity—I want to be able to show it to my kids and grandkids, and say that ‘this is what our love was.’” As the night grew later, the Backstreet Boys did a surprise concert.

After spending the next day in Rome, the Ambanis held a toga party back on deck. Radhika and Anant, who met during their college years, wanted a throwback to that time in their life: banners from their respective universities of NYU and Brown hung from the ceiling and David Guetta played a DJ set.

Radhika wore a custom “toga” designed by emerging New York–based designer Grace Ling, who attended Parsons School of Design around the same time Radhika attended NYU—which the bride-to-be saw as a fitting nod to her downtown Manhattan days. It featured an aerospace aluminum breastplate, made to mimic drapery, that the designer 3D-carved, sculpted, and then 3D-printed. It took more than 30 artisans to complete. “I want people to see couture coming from America, New York, as well, not just from Europe,” the designer tells Vogue. “She is an amazing, amazing person at her craft,” Radhika adds of Ling. Meanwhile, the groom’s mother, Nita Ambani, opted for a design by Schiaparelli.

On the third day of the cruise, they docked in Cannes for a masquerade ball at Château de la Croix des Gardes, planned by event producer The Isle of You. (The grand home was famously featured in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1955 film To Catch a Thief .) For the formal affair, Radhika chose a custom Versace dress with blue shades to match the color of the Côte d’Azur water, with help from her stylist Shaleena Nathani. She and the Versace atelier worked for a year to complete the dress. “I wanted it to just be romantic and young,” she says.

On her neck was a rare blue opal surrounded by diamonds by Lorraine Schwartz. The necklace is a symbolic one: Opal is her birthstone and diamonds are his. She put on a bridal fascinator to serve as her “mask,” and Anant joined her in custom Dolce & Gabbana.

The pinnacle of the evening? A performance by Katy Perry. As she sang “Firework,” real-life fireworks went off in the sky above the chateau. However, the night was far from over: As guests reboarded, a second concert by Pitbull began.

The final night of celebrations took place in Portofino. The Ambanis took over the main square and transformed it into an open-air market complete with food stalls. Event planner Vincenzo Dascanio oversaw the event design and florals, where tomatoes and Vespas served as la dolce vita decor accents.

Radhika wore a rare piece of fashion history for the occasion: an archival Yves Saint Laurent for Dior dress, sourced by stylist Mimi Cuttrell. “It seems like a simple dress, but if you look at the seams and the construction, you’ll see how detailed it really is,” she says.

As the sun set, legendary Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli performed. He sang “Can't Help Falling in Love” as well as “I Found My Love in Portofino.” At one point, his son Matteo joined him on stage. “It was just the most magical evening,” Radhika says. “I had goosebumps.”

And there are several more high-profile happenings to come. There will be multiple pujas (a prayer ritual for good luck) as well as a traditional sangeet ceremony over the next few weeks. Then, there are all the events surrounding the wedding itself. Radhika says the planning for it all is “going great.”

“I’m very excited to be married,” she adds.
