East Africa — Tour Highlights and Travel Tips

Wildebeest Migration

Think of safari, and it’s East Africa’s landscapes that come to mind — one of the last places to catch the Big Five . Look beyond the plains in a trip to East Africa and you’ll also discover the Great Rift Valley’s many other wonders such as Lake Victoria, Kenya ’s pristine beaches, and the Zanzibar islands among them.

Tour Highlights

  • Jump into a 4x4 for that timeless safari experience in Tsavo East , Amboseli , or Ngorongoro - just three of a whole host of protected spaces from which to take home unforgettable memories of elephants, rhinos, and lions in their natural environment
  • Pull on your hiking boots and scale the heady heights of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain at 5,895 meters.
  • Experience the grandeur of Victoria Falls – ‘the Smoke that Thunders’ – up close, from the comfort of a viewing platform, or by rafting the bubbling white water of Zambezi Gorge
  • Hit the idyllic beaches of Kenya or Zanzibar and soak up the rays on pristine sands, splash about in the warm shallows, or delve beneath the waves for a spot of world-class scuba diving
  • Delve into the forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda for that once in a lifetime encounter with gorillas in the mist, coming eye to eye with our closest living relatives as their family groups relax in the shade of the lush vegetation
  • Witness one of the world’s largest animal migrations, as more than two million wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle cross the plains of the Masai Mara and Serengeti in search of fresh grass.

Travel Tips

  • The best time to visit East Africa is generally considered to be from July to November, during the region’s long dry season. Temperatures are mild, and July sees the start of the wildebeest migration, although this time is also peak period, with accommodation booking up quickly.
  • East Africa is incredibly safe as a destination, with tour companies and locals alike going out of their way to make visitors feel welcome. Follow standard practices, such as not leaving valuables unattended, and you won’t have any problems.
  • Do like the locals, and wear light weave and light color natural fabrics such as cotton, rather than tight-fitting man-made materials, to stay cool in the sun. Make sure you’ve also packed a sun hat.
  • Don’t worry if you don’t run to schedule. Time is a little more fluid in East Africa than in the west, however, this doesn’t mean you’ll have to miss out on any activities or experiences, with additional time built in for just this eventuality!

East Africa is home to an incredible number of iconic safari destinations. The Masai Mara National Reserve, Serengeti National Park, the Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Nakuru National Park … and the list goes on. And then there are the bucket-list highlights, such as gorilla trekking and the wildebeest migration. Making sense of how it all fits together and what can be done on a standard trip can be overwhelming, though. Luckily, SafariBookings has got you covered with a great selection of tours to fit everybody’s needs. Browse our favorite East African safaris to get inspired.

East African Safari Tours

1. Northern Circuit Safari in Tanzania (Including Serengeti)

Wildebeest migration

  • Days : 4 to 7 days
  • Parks : Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

If you’re looking for an action-packed safari with lots of variety, look no further than Tanzania’s Northern circuit. Just a short drive out of the gateway city of Arusha is Lake Manyara National Park, a scenic little gem in the Rift Valley. It’s known for tree-climbing lions, and the birdlife is phenomenal. Next you’ll spend a couple of nights in Serengeti National Park. The endless plains are dotted with big herds of grazers, and predators are never far off. You might also have a chance to see the great migration, Africa’s most impressive wildlife spectacle. On your way back to Arusha, you’ll descend into the Ngorongoro Crater. The forested crater rim creates a perfect backdrop for all the wildlife drama that unfolds on the crater floor. You’ll see more animals here in one day than you might have thought possible, including the endangered black rhino.

Northern Tanzania Safaris (4 to 7 Days)

2. Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar Island

Zanzibar beach

  • Days : 6 to 14 days
  • Parks : Nyerere (Selous) National Park , Lake Manyara National Park , Serengeti National Park , Ngorongoro Crater

Tanzania offers the perfect safari-and-beach combo. Most popular is a safari in Tanzania’s Northern circuit (see above), followed by a tropical Zanzibar beach holiday. The island is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar city. There’s plenty to do in Zanzibar. Recommended day trips include snorkeling on colorful offshore coral reefs, and spice tours into the island’s rural interior. Alternatively, for a quick safari add-on to a Zanzibar tour, Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve) is a great option. Here you can pack a lot into a short stay. Activities include game drives, walking safaris and boat cruises on the mighty Rufiji River.

Tanzania Safari & Zanzibar (6 to 14 Days)

3. Masai Mara Safari in Kenya

Great Migration of the Wildebeest, heading out looking for water

  • Days : 3 to 5 days
  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Lake Nakuru National Park

For incredible wildlife viewing in a classic African setting, you can’t go wrong with a Masai Mara safari. Come here from August to October and you’ll have a chance to see one of the biggest wildlife spectacles on earth: the great migration. On a 4- or 5-day safari you can make an overnight stop at Lake Nakuru. This scenic Rift Valley lake is known for its incredible birdlife and seasonal flocks of flamingos. It is also a great place to see white and black rhinos, Rothschild’s giraffes, hippos and a variety of antelope.

Masai Mara Safaris (3 to 5 Days)

4. Kenya Safari & Beach Time

Sunbeds on the beach

  • Parks and reserves : Masai Mara National Reserve , Tsavo West National Park , Tsavo East National Park , Lake Nakuru National Park , Amboseli National Park

Kenya is the perfect destination for a classic bush-and-beach holiday. You’ll spend a couple of days exploring the world-renowned Masai Mara National Reserve. The open savannah is perfect for quality sightings of lions and cheetahs. If you’re lucky you might even see a hunt. You’ll only need a short stay in the beautiful Lake Nakuru National Park to see rhinos and a variety of other wildlife. To round off the safari, you’ll visit Amboseli National Park for inspiring close-ups with elephants and views of Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain. Time permitting, you can add on a few days in Tsavo (East and West) for a true wilderness experience and a chance to see unusual antelope, such as gerenuk and fringe-eared oryx. Finally you’ll head to the coast to spend a few days relaxing at one of Kenya’s idyllic beaches – the perfect way to end a holiday.

Kenya Safari & Beach (6 to 14 Days)

5. Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking

Silverback mountain gorilla

  • Parks : Bwindi Impenetrable National Park , Queen Elizabeth National Park

A Uganda gorilla trekking safari is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Looking into the eyes of a mountain gorilla isn’t only exhilarating, it’s also deeply moving. After an early breakfast you’ll head out with your ranger into the depths of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a true jungle wonderland. Following the gorillas’ tracks on slippery forest paths can be challenging, but the reward is an hour in the company of these gentle giants. On a 5-day trip you can either end your tour with a few days at Lake Bunyonyi or Queen Elizabeth National Park. The former is best if you want to wind down from your gorilla trek in a pretty spot that’s ideal for walking, swimming and canoeing. The latter if you want to track chimpanzees and enjoy a classic savannah safari with a chance to see elephants, buffalo and possibly even tree-climbing lions.

Uganda Safari & Gorillas (3 to 5 Days)

6. Gorilla & Chimp Trekking in Rwanda

Mountain gorilla family with silverback

  • Parks : Volcanoes National Park , Nyungwe National Park

Walk in the footsteps of world-renowned primatologist Dian Fossey on a Rwanda gorilla trekking safari. You’ll be staying just outside Volcanoes National Park in the Virunga Mountains. This is where Dian Fossey first habituated gorillas in the 1960s, and it is arguably still the best place in the world to see these gentle giants. Other activities here include golden monkey trekking, hiking to the original gorilla research camp and, for the very adventurous, summiting one of the Virunga volcanoes. On a 5-day trip you can also include a visit to Nyungwe National Park, one of the most beautiful rainforests in East Africa. A suspended canopy walk offers a unique bird’s eye perspective of the forest environment. You’ll have the opportunity to see several of the 13 primate species present in Nyungwe, including chimpanzees.

East Africa is home to some of the world’s most spectacular safari destinations. From the endless plains of the Serengeti to the forests of Rwanda, this region of the world offers abundant wildlife and stunning natural wonders. Here are several of the top countries in East Africa for spectacular safaris:

While East African safaris are possible year-round, many travelers aim for the annual Great Migration in Tanzania and Kenya between July and October.

The dry season from July through October is considered the peak safari season in most parks. Grasslands are less dense, making it easier to see the wildlife. Large herds congregate around dwindling water sources. From July to October, you can witness the Great Migration in Kenya's Masai Mara and Tanzania's Serengeti as wildebeest, zebra, and gazelle move between the countries.

Visiting during the November to June wet season has advantages too. Rains bring the landscape to life with greenery and wildflowers. The climate is also quite comfortable, aside from potential afternoon rainstorms. Ultimately the best time to visit East Africa depends on your safari goals, and we can help you find the perfect time for your trip.

With its sprawling savannas, majestic mountains, and abundant wildlife, East Africa offers seemingly endless options for extraordinary safaris. Here are some of the best places to visit in East Africa on safari :

  • Serengeti National Park, Tanzania: The Serengeti savannas are famous for the Great Migration and are home to the Big Five. Explore the vast plains and river crossings on the ultimate wildlife safari.
  • Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya: Known for large lion, leopard, and cheetah populations, Masai Mara is a wildlife viewing paradise. Time your visit for the Migration's incredible sightings across the lush landscape.
  • Ngorongoro Crater, Tanzania: The Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO site offering remarkable scenery and wildlife density in a unique caldera setting. From cultural villages to surprising landscapes, experience the untouched beauty on safari.
  • Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda: Home to endangered mountain gorillas, Volcanoes National Park offers travelers a chance to trek the forested slopes to observe the surprisingly friendly gorilla families up close.
  • Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, Uganda: The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is a prime destination for tracking endangered mountain gorillas amidst lush rainforest terrain to spend afternoons watching the playful animals.

From up-close encounters with iconic wildlife to seeing breathtaking natural wonders, East Africa promises unforgettable safari experiences. Here are some of the top things to do in East Africa on safari :

  • See millions of wildebeest and zebra cross the Mara River in Kenya and Serengeti in Tanzania during the Great Migration
  • Trek through dense rainforests to observe gorillas in their natural habitat

The diversity of iconic African wildlife you may encounter on an East African safari is truly phenomenal. Each park promises different highlights and concentrations of animals to discover, and here are some of the most notable creatures:

  • Nile crocodiles

An East African safari is a true adventure, so come prepared with proper attire and gear to make the most of your experience . We suggest safari-goers pack the following in addition to one’s typical packing list:

  • Neutral, light-colored clothing
  • Lightweight, waterproof rain jacket
  • Long pants for bush walks
  • Hiking boots or walking shoes
  • Camera with a zoom lens and extra memory cards
  • Insect repellent
  • UV protection, including but not limited to sunscreen, hats, lip balm, and sunglasses

Safaris throughout East Africa are safe.

Countries like Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, and Rwanda have incredible reputations as premier safari destinations, with wildlife posing little threat when proper precautions are taken. By following the instructions and guidance of your expert game rangers and the park rules, you can safely observe wildlife in their natural habitats.

Petty crimes like pickpocketing or luggage theft can happen but are uncommon during East African safaris within the tourism infrastructure. Simple vigilance in securing valuables and working closely with your guides will minimize any security issues.

Whether you seek the classic savanna wildlife spectacle or prefer going beyond the beaten path, we can help you find the best East African safari itinerary and tailor the perfect trip just for you. Here are some of our most popular safaris to inspire your travels:

Best of East Africa

20 days | discover the charming communities and innate beauty of these wide-open lands.

Cheetahs in Masai mara National Reserve

Take 20 days to uncover the best of eastern Africa as you travel across Kenya and Tanzania. Turn your attention to the wild as you search for flamingos in Lake Nakuru, the black rhino in the Ngorongoro Crater and the Big Five in the Serengeti. Swap the savanna for a higher elevation when you visit the Usambara Mountains, and then leave all your cares behind as you relax on the endless white sands of Zanzibar’s Northern Beaches. Give East Africa an in-depth viewing as you travel from Nairobi to Zanzibar with a local crew and a small group of avid travellers.

Trip overview

  • Venture into the incredible Masai Mara National Reserve for a full-day game drive in an open-top 4WD, looking for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes and more.
  • An early morning game drive through Lake Nakuru National Park might be your best chance of seeing black and white rhinoceroses in the flesh.
  • Take a cooking class in a small village and learn some Kenyan recipes, then share your creations at a camp dinner under the stars.
  • Explore the Serengeti, a wildlife arena like no other. You're bound to spot most of Africa's iconic Big Five game on your adventures at sunrise and sunset – when the animals are most active.
  • Meet with local community members and join in on village activities in Mto wa Mbu with a guided stroll around the farming areas.
  • This is an overland trip. That means you’ll be travelling with a group in a purpose-built vehicle, visiting remote communities, setting up your own tent, occasionally roughing it in the bush with no facilities, and getting the best possible views of the Big Five. While the trucks don’t have air conditioning, they do have sliding windows which let in the breeze and make it even easier to take spectacular snaps of the local wildlife. The drive days can be long, but it’s as much about the journey as the destination, and half the fun is the camaraderie. For more info on this style of travel, see our Africa overland page: https://www.intrepidtravel.com/africa/overland
  • In Loita Hills you will stay in a secure bush camp with basic facilities and cold showers. There is no Wi-Fi or upgrades available but the rewards of experiencing Maasai culture should more than make up for the lack of creature comforts.
  • Camp in the Serengeti National Park itself without fences between you and the animals. Your leader will brief you on the safety measures the group will need to take for the 2 nights spent in the park.
  • There will be many early starts either to make use of the better safari time or to beat the morning traffic on long travel days.

Jambo! Welcome to Kenya. Your trip begins with a welcome meeting at 6 pm. If you arrive with time to spare before the meeting, consider getting to know the city on an Urban Adventure like the ‘Nairobi Experience’. This optional 4-hour tour is a great way to get a feel for Nairobi, and includes lunch at a local restaurant. After the welcome meeting, perhaps join your new travel companions for an optional group dinner.

  • Hotel (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD45

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting as we will be collecting insurance details and next of kin information at this time. If you are going to be late please let your travel agent or hotel reception know. Ask reception or look for a note in the lobby for more information on where the meeting will take place.

Unfortunately, petty crime has become common in Nairobi and recently arrived visitors to the capital can often make for tempting targets. Your trip leader will verse you in a few worthwhile precautions at the welcome meeting, but generally you should get local advice on where to walk and keep valuables in a neck wallet or money belt at all times. Stay aware even when inside, as thieves and pickpockets have been known to operate indoors. There's no need to be paranoid but appearing vigilant is a great deterrent to would-be thieves.

For more information on Urban Adventure options in Nairobi go to urbanadventures.com/destination/nairobi-tours or speak to an Intrepid booking agent.

Drive north-west past splendid views of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha and Elementaita to Lake Nakuru National Park. Situated in the heart of the Great Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru National Park is a great location for spotting wildlife, which you will do in an early morning game drive tomorrow. For now, head to a nearby village with your leader. This is a fantastic opportunity to interact with the local folk and get a feel for everyday life here. Enjoy a cooking class and return later in the evening to share the results for dinner.

  • Camping (with facilities) (1 night)
  • Lake Nakuru - Village Walk & Cooking Class

Your travel time today will be approximately 4 hours.

Your camp, outside the park, is well-situated and has flush toilets and showers. Accommodation upgrades and Wi-Fi are not available.

Wake early for breakfast and head into the Lake Nakuru National Park for a game drive in the overland vehicle. Along with the other members of the Big Five, Lake Nakuru is home to rhinos, and there will be a good chance of spotting and photographing one of these magnificent beasts. Return to camp for lunch before driving to your camp near Lake Naivasha. One of the few freshwater lakes in the Great Rift Valley, Lake Naivasha has floating islands of papyrus reeds and a border of flat-topped acacias. It's also home to a healthy population of hippos and a tremendous variety of birds.

  • Lake Nakuru - Overland Vehicle Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 3 hours.

There will be an opportunity to access an ATM and visit a market today to stock up on items for the remainder of the trip. Your campsite tonight is basic, with showers and flush toilets. There are no upgrades available at our campsite this evening. Wi-fi is available at the bar.

Enjoy a free day to choose from a variety of optional activities available around Lake Naivasha. Perhaps venture to Hell's Gate National Park, which boasts beautiful cliffs, gorges, rock towers, volcanoes and a range of geothermal phenomena. Another great choice is to take a boat trip across Lake Naivasha – perhaps the best way to take in the atmosphere of this lush area. If you're looking for something active, why not hire a bike for the day and make some of your own discoveries, venturing beyond the cacti and olive trees.

  • Lake Naivasha - Boat trip
  • Lake Naivasha - Hell's Gate NP (Game Drive) - USD65
  • Lake Naivasha - Game Walk in Crater Lake Game Sanctuary (entrance fee) - USD50

The Crater Lake game walk and Hell's Gate National Park optional activities will also incur a USD 50 transport fee per vehicle.

Depart Lake Naivasha, making a short stop in Narok to do a spot of food shopping. Continue to Loita Hills, home of the Maasai people, stopping for lunch on the way. You’ll be camping at Tepesua Village, which is known for championing Maasai women’s health and education. When you arrive, be welcomed by traditional Maasai warrior song and dance, then your host will explain the details of Maasai warrior training. Take a walk to the community village which was founded to alleviate the poverty of Maasai widows, who traditionally are not allowed to inherit property. The village offers support, safety and economic growth through the ‘Tepesua Widows Income Project’. Spend the evening around a campfire and learn more about their age-old culture and traditions as you share stories with Maasai warriors into the night.

  • Camping (with basic facilities) (1 night)
  • Loita Hills - Cultural talk and village visit

Your travel time today will be approximately 5 hours.

Hot bucket showers are available in the morning. Wi-fi is not available and only minimal upgrades are on offer at tonight’s bush camp.

Today you’ll travel from Loita Hills to Masai Mara. The road is dusty when dry, and could be slippery and muddy when wet, so the going may be slow. The Masai Mara is the quintessential African experience, with sparse open plains, dramatic skies and some of the world's most tremendous animals. After setting up camp, sit down to some lunch. Then it's time to jump in 4WDs and go for a game drive through the wilderness of the Mara.

  • Masai Mara - 4x4 Game Drive

Your travel time today will be approximately 2 hours.

Your campground tonight is located outside of the national reserve and has flush toilets and showers. There is an option to upgrade, depending on availability. Please speak to your leader during your tour for more information on room upgrades. Wi-fi is not available.

Venture into the Masai Mara National Reserve for a full day's game drive in 4WDs. You'll explore this diverse environment and most likely see a multitude of wildlife. An optional balloon ride over the Mara at sunrise is available today. If you have pre-booked this activity you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site for a safety briefing from your pilot. Then you will glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, to get some amazing photo opportunities. Sometimes you will ascend, getting an overview of the enormity of the plains and of the early morning movements of the teeming herds. After landing, you'll be treated to a bush breakfast, then be returned to your campsite.

  • Masai Mara National Reserve - Balloon ride (from price) - USD625

The balloon ride must be booked in advance to secure a place, which you can do through an Intrepid booking agent. If you would rather wait and try to get a better price by booking this locally on the ground you are welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited. If you participate in this activity you will miss the morning half of the included game drive.

Your day is free in Nairobi today, until another welcome meeting at 6 pm tonight. Maybe head out and explore the National Museum of Kenya, the Karen Blixen Museum or the highly recommended Bomas of Kenya, where traditional homesteads of several Kenyan tribes are displayed in an outdoor village.

  • Nairobi - City Experience Urban Adventure - USD55

As this is a combination trip, your trip leader and group members will most likely change today.

Petty theft is common in Nairobi. As a general rule, the safest place for your valuables is on your person in a neck wallet or money belt, though your hotel room may have a safe in which to store things. If you do decide to go exploring, make sure you get local advice on where it is and isn't safe to walk – particularly for later in the day. Be careful not to leave bags unattended on chairs or on the floor when in bars or restaurants. Without being paranoid, appearing vigilant is a great deterrence to would-be thieves. Also, make scans of important travel documents and email them to yourself – this will save you hours of time in paperwork if anything does happen.

Depart early for Mto wa Mbu in your overland truck. The trip includes a border crossing from Kenya into Tanzania, so be sure to have your passport handy. While you're on the road, there will be a stop at an ATM and a market or shop to stock up on any supplies you might need for the coming days. Arrive in Mto wa Mbu and acquaint yourself with this delightful small village – it's a fascinating snapshot of small-town African life, situated well off the tourist trail.

Your travel time today will be approximately 10 hours.

Your camp tonight has Wi-Fi, a swimming pool, and optional upgrades (subject to availability). We recommend using local currency for any purchases or upgrades.

Get up early, put your camping and personal gear into a six-person jeep and head out for an excursion into the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Crater. Enjoy a safari in the crater, spending 3 to 4 hours exploring this incredible, perfectly intact volcanic caldera. Watch for black rhinos, lions, leopards, elephants, impalas, zebras and hippos. The crater floor offers excellent game viewing all year round (some 30,000 animals live here) and the photo opportunities are unrivalled. Next, it's on to the wide-open plains of the Serengeti. Green after the rains, brown and burnt in the dry season, this is perhaps the quintessential image of Africa – the home of thousands of hoofed animals and fierce predators. Your campsite is within the Serengeti itself, so listen out for the sounds of nocturnal animals as you drift off to sleep.

  • Ngorongoro Crater - 4x4 Game Drive
  • Serengeti National Park - 4x4 Game Drive

Tonight’s camp is basic with limited running water. No accommodation upgrades or wi-fi are available. Our camp within the Serengeti National Park does not have a fence to separate the camp from the animals. This is quite the experience as animals such as buffalo and hyenas often come close to camp after sundown. On arrival at the camp, your leader will give a detailed safety briefing on what is required to ensure the safety of the group.

You may notice some Maasai villages in the region of the Ngorongoro Crater offering a cultural experience. Intrepid recommends avoiding these villages, as they can impact negatively on the Maasai culture and travellers' perceptions of it by selling an artificial experience.

Awake at dawn and embark on a game drive. You will head out while the animals are at their most active, then head back to camp for brunch at around 11 am. After spending the middle of the day relaxing, just like the animals do, head out again as the day begins to cool. You'll return from this second game drive in time for dinner. There's also the option of a balloon ride over the park this morning – in place of some of today’s game drives. If you have pre-booked this activity, you will be picked up before dawn and driven to the launch site. After a safety briefing, glide through the dawn, sometimes at tree height, getting some amazing photo opportunities. Sometimes you will ascend, getting an overview of the enormity of the plains and the early morning movements of the teeming herds. After landing, indulge in a five-star bush breakfast, then be returned to camp.

  • Serengeti National Park - Balloon Ride (from price) - USD745

The balloon ride is offered as a pre-booked service which will guarantee you a place. If you would rather wait and get a better price by booking this locally on the ground, you are welcome to, but keep in mind that this is a popular activity and places are limited. If you participate in this activity you will miss the morning half of the included game drive.

Rise with the sun and enjoy another game drive as you leave the Serengeti in your dust. Jump back into your overland vehicle and head for Mto wa Mbu. Once camp is set up, join the local community for a guided stroll around the farming areas, milling machine, and local homes and farmlands. After, we'll share a local dinner in town and if time permits you may have the oppertunity to watch how it's made with a local cooking demonstration.

After setting up camp, we'll take a guided stroll through the farming areas, milling machines, and local homes and farmlands, getting to know the local community and their way of life. Later, we'll enjoy a scrumptious local dinner in town. If time permits, you might even get to witness a local cooking demonstration and see how it's made.

  • Mto Wa Mbu - Village walk & local dinner

Prepare yourself for a long travel day heading for the Usambara Mountains. Stretch your legs during a brief supply stop in Arusha, then jump back in the vehicle and watch the ever-changing scenery, read your favourite book or get to really know your fellow travellers. Your base will be Lushoto – an old German colony and home to the Wasambaa people. This highland town sits at approximately 1400 metres and this evening you'll camp in the grounds of one of the oldest hotels in Africa.

Explore the beautiful Usambara Mountains today – a lovely unspoilt area of Tanzania. Unlike the coast and the north, very few tourists visit this part of the country, so it has a freshness that can be hard to find elsewhere. As beautiful as the surrounding mountains and rainforests are, however, the real jewels here are the local people and villages. You'll experience some hospitality on a visit to some of the small local communities. From your base, you will take a walk out to the gorgeous Irente viewpoint. It's best to pack some water and snacks in a day pack for this trip. On your way back, visit a local cultural project based at an Irente farm and enjoy a picnic lunch.

  • Irente - Lushoto hike
  • Irente - Local lunch

Leaving the mountains behind, travel further south to the coastal town of Kipepeo Beach in Dar es Salaam. Your camp at Kipepeo is by the beach, so make the most of it – perhaps take a stroll along the shore after you arrive and settle in.

Your travel time today will be approximately 9 hours.

Tonight’s camp is on the grounds of a hotel, so accommodation upgrades are usually possible (subject to availability).

Catch a ferry to Africa's 'Spice Island' of Zanzibar. Filled with pristine white-sand beaches, winding cobblestone alleyways and fragrant bazaars, Zanzibar has had a colourful history – everything from slave traders to Arabian sultans and fruit exporters. The sight of traditional dhows sailing along the coast evokes what the island must have been like in centuries ago. The old part of Zanzibar's main city is known as Stone Town, and the best way to see this is on foot, exploring the markets, shops, mosques, palaces and courtyards. Explore the many charms of Stone Town, the historic part of Zanzibar's main city, with a local guide. Taste the local delicacies and gain insight into daily local life living on Zanzibar.

When the sun is setting, why not grab a drink from a bar overlooking the seafront. A seafood curry at a local restaurant is also a great choice. You'll spend the night in Stone Town at a basic inn.

  • Stone Town Tour - Dharajani Market, Joseph's Cathederal, Palace Museum, Forodhani Food Market - USD20
  • Zanzibar - Prison Island Tour - USD25
  • Stone Town - Handicraft & Music Urban Adventure - USD50

As this is a combination trip the composition of your group may change at this location. There will be a group meeting to discuss the next stage of your itinerary and meet your new fellow travellers. Please note the Zanzibar portion of your itinerary may have more passengers than the maximum group size of 22 as we have a crossover of trips starting and finishing in Zanzibar.

Once checked out of your Stone Town accommodation, consider booking in to an optional guided tour of the island's spice plantations, learning all about the history of this town's spice trade. You will have the opportunity to smell and taste various spices, such as cinnamon, vanilla and ginger, plus sample some teas made with these spices too. After lunch, head to the Northern Beaches, where white sands and sparkling blue seas await. This is the Indian Ocean at its best.

  • Bungalow (1 night)
  • Zanzibar - Spice tour - USD25

If you choose not to book in on the optional Zanzibar spice tour this morning, you will be transported directly to the island's Northern Beaches.

Enjoy free time in this beautiful archipelago today. There are many ways you can spend your day – perhaps talk to your leader for any recommendations they might have. Snorkelling in search of exotic fish is an excellent option, or you could take a traditional dhow boat on the water. You might also like to feast on a sumptuous lunch of grilled local seafood, or just relax in a hammock underneath a coconut tree with a good book. It's totally up to you!

  • Zanzibar - Snorkelling - USD50
  • Zanzibar - Dhow Trip - USD35

After checking out of your accommodation this morning, you will make your way back to Stone Town, arriving at a centrally-located hotel around 12 pm. With no activities planned for today, you are free to leave at any time. That doesn't mean your adventure has to come to an end! If you wish to stay on in Zanzibar, either at the Northern Beaches beach resort or in Stone Town, we'll be happy to organise additional accommodation (subject to availability).

If you wish to organise onward transfers today, please note that the easiest option is to fly out of Zanzibar Airport. However, if you have arranged to fly out of Dar es Salaam Airport, ferries depart Zanzibar at 7.30 am, 9.30 am, 12.30 pm and 3.30 pm. It's important to allow enough time to get back to mainland Africa if you need to catch your departing flight from Dar es Salaam. Speak to your group leader earlier in your trip for more information.

17 breakfasts, 12 lunches, 13 dinners

Overland vehicle, 4x4 Safari Vehicle, Ferry, Minibus

As the balloon only holds 16 people, places are limited and we recommend you book in advance. Please inquire when booking your trip to book this optional activity. 3. This trip is a combination of YGOK YNAI YXOP and YXON our most popular itineraries. As such the make up of your group and your leader may change on days 8 and 17. 4. The 10 Best Places for African Safari Tours

Animals in Kenya: African Elephants in the Maasai Mara

Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. All hosted affiliate links follow our editorial policies .

Created by William Cornwallis Harris during the Victorian era and popularized by authors such as Jules Verne ( Five Weeks in a Balloon ) and Ernest Hemingway ( The Snows of Kilimanjaro ), African safaris tours have existed in some form or fashion for nearly 200 years now.

Safari, meaning journey in Swahili, have evolved over time.

Where once safaris in Africa largely involved hunting and “roughing it” in the wilderness, these days they’re mostly about watching and photographing wildlife .

African safaris come in every level of luxury and budget you can imagine, with dozens of countries offering incredible African safari holidays.

And while wildlife safaris have become a global phenomenon (see: Galapagos Islands Animals , Alaskan Animals , Costa Rica Animals , and Indian Animals ), Africa remains among the best continents for nature and wildlife lovers to explore.

Here’s a look at 10 of the best places for African safari tours, from iconic East African countries such as Kenya and Tanzania to up-and-coming ecotourism hotspots like Malawi, Namibia, and Rwanda.

Safari tours in africa: Okavango Delta, Botswana. Photo by Dereck Joubert.

1. BOTSWANA

People seem surprised when we tell them that Botswana is currently #1 on our African safari bucket list.

But the country’s aggressively forward-thinking approach to wildlife conservation and its unique array of national parks and game reserves make it a haven for nature lovers.

The country’s anti-poaching methods are among the strictest in all of Africa. Botswana banned commercial hunting entirely in 2014, and environmental minister Tshekedi Khama launched an unofficial shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Anti-poaching units are overseen by the government-funded Botswana Defense Force, which means they have more training, weapons, and other resources than APUs in other countries.

And since wildlife management is largely left in the hands of local communities (which provides an alternative source of revenue to poaching), poachers are widely treated as enemies of the people.

As a result, Botswana has emerged in recent years as one of Africa’s hottest ecotourism destinations. The vast elephant herds of Chobe National Park and canoe-based wildlife safaris in the Okavango Delta are among the nation’s world-renowned tourist attractions.

But there are also traditional Big five animal safaris at Moremi Nature Reserve (Botswana’s first protected area) and uncrowded gems such as Makgadikgadi Pans National Park, Nxai Pan National Park, and the Central Kalahari Game Reserve.

Cheetahs with Gazelle Kill in Ol Kinyei Conservancy

As African safaris go, it’s difficult to beat a tour of Kenya’s national parks and conservancies.

Even if you don’t visit during Africa’s Great Migration– when millions of wildebeests, zebras, and other herbivores follow the rain north from Tanzania’s Serengeti– Kenya’s stunning natural beauty and dizzying array of wildlife defies adequate description.

Kenya offers 25 national parks , 16 national reserves, six marine parks and reserves, and countless private conservancies for visitors to explore.

The country boasts approximately 390 species of mammals (including 20 primates, 37 carnivores, and 43 ungulates), 1100 species of birds (eight of which are endemic ), 280 reptile species, and 115 amphibians.

The most popular of Kenya’s national parks include 151-square mile Amboseli , a UNESCO World Heritage Site near the Tanzanian border that’s known for its massive elephant population, 400+ bird species, and spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro .

And of course the Masai Mara National Reserve needs no introduction as the northern stop of the Great Migration route.

But the 583-square mile reserve is just a part of the Greater Mara Ecosystem, which includes neighboring, owned by the Maasai people , the private Massasi Mara conservancies and conservation areas.

The Greater Mara area is home to about 25% of Kenya’s wildlife, including an exceptional population of Big Cats (cheetahs, East African lions, and leopards) as well as their prey.

Lake Malawi - African safari holidays

Most people would be hard-pressed to locate Malawai on a map (hint: it’s south of Tanzania and Zambia, north of Mozambique), let alone explain why the country is considered an up-and-coming ecotourism destination to watch.

The country is tiny (45,747 square miles), relatively undeveloped, with most of the population rural and impoverished.

So why visit? The #1 reason is Lake Malawi National Park, which takes up approximately one-third of the country.

It’s one of the most biodiverse lake regions in the world, providing a fertile home for around 200 mammal species (including big cats, elephants, hippos, monkeys, and more), 650 species of birds , and more than 5,500 plants.

But Malawi also has four other national parks (Kasungu, Lengwe, Liwonde, and Nyika), four wildlife reserves (Majete, Mwabvi, Nkhotakota, and Vwaza Marsh), and two biosphere reserves (Lake Chilwa and Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve), some of which are developing a reputation as off-the-beaten-path havens for birdwatchers .

Cape Fur Seals in Namibia - safari trips in Africa

Located on the continent’s southwestern coast, Namibia is utterly unlike any other nation in Africa .

With just two million people living in an area of over 300,000 square miles, it’s one of the least populated countries on the planet.

The land in-between the cities– most of which is dominated by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts – is wild and relatively unspoiled by any sort of development.

But don’t let the stark images of the ghost trees of the Deadvlei and the striking red dunes of Sossusvlei fool you: Namibia is positively teeming with life.

With 12 national parks as well as numerous other reserves and protected areas, the country has plenty of wildlife-rich areas to explore.

Etosha National Park, which is home to four of Africa’s Big five animals (no Cape buffaloes), is so dry that you can usually find animals gathered around its watering holes.

Bwabwata National Park, located on the narrow strip of land near Zambia and Zimbabwe, has wetlands that make it a great place to spot elephants and birds .

The remote wilderness of Khaudum National Park is home to loads of lions, cheetahs, hyenas, Roan antelope, and elephant herds.

But the country’s most unique protected area may be the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. It’s home to one of the largest Cape fur seal colonies in the world, with a population that can exceed 500,000 animals!

African gorilla tours - Mountain Gorilla in Volcanoes National Park Rwanda

Talk about this landlocked East African nation and the first thing that usually springs to most people’s minds is Hotel Rwanda and the mass Rwanda genocide of nearly a million people back in 1994.

But the last 29 years have brought a lot of infrastructure investment in Rwanda, and the result is one of Africa’s most impressive (and fastest growing) ecotourism destinations.

Most people are familiar with Rwanda’s mountain gorillas , whose plight for survival was made famous by National Geographic and the late Dian Fossey in the 1970s and 80s.

Thanks to conservation initiatives created by Fossey and still executed today by the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fun d , the latest census shows that the population in the Virunga Mountains continues to grow.

A few years ago, the total number of Rwandan Mountain Gorilla’s exceeded 1,000 for the first time in decades.

There are 10 habituated gorilla families in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, with groups of 8 trekkers allowed to visit them for one hour each day.

Spending time with these gentle giants ranks easily among the best African safari experiences. But it’s far from the only awesome activity for nature lovers in Rwanda.

From trekking to see habituated chimpanzees and numerous other primate species in southern Rwanda’s Nyungwe Forest National Park to a more traditional Big five safari in eastern Rwanda’s Akagera National Park, this country remains a relatively uncrowded gem for wildlife watchers.

Rhino in Kruger National Park

6. SOUTH AFRICA

Apartheid ended in 1994, and in the ensuing years South Africa has emerged as one of the most popular destinations for African safari vacations.

Its location makes it convenient and cheaper for U.S. residents to fly to, while the well-developed infrastructure of its major cities (including Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg ) makes it easier for luxury travelers to find the creature comforts they love.

With nearly one million annual visitors, Kruger National Park is the country’s biggest attraction for nature/wildlife lovers.

Part of the UNESCO-protected Kruger to Canyons Biosphere Reserve , the park encompasses around 7,500 square miles in the northeastern Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces.

On the positive side, Kruger boasts impressive biodiversity and is the rare national park where visitors can self-drive themselves and still have a superb safari.

Spend a few days there and you’re virtually guaranteed to see the Big five animals , as well as rare species such as African wild dogs and cheetahs.

On the downside, the park has grown so popular that overtourism is an issue: Major sightings during peak season will find dozens of vehicles angling to get a peek, and not everyone obeys the rules.

To experience more intimate and luxury African safari tours, visit any of the major private game reserves located in the Greater Kruger area.

KwaZulu-Natal, in southeastern South Africa, also offers excellent safari opportunities in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park, the wetlands of iSimangaliso Wetland Park (a UNESCO site), and numerous private reserves.

African tours and safaris - Masai Giraffes in Tanzania

7. TANZANIA

As the starting point for the world-renowned wildebeest migration, this East African hotspot ranks second only to Kenya among the continent’s most popular safari destinations.

And with good reason: The 16 Tanzania national parks , three game reserves, and two marine reserves offer an extraordinary wealth of wildlife and other natural wonders.

The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is arguably the most fascinating of Tanzania’s protected areas.

The UNESCO World Heritage Site is centered around the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera , whose 100 square miles are packed with approximately 25,000 large animals at any given time.

Serengeti National Park , where the Great Migration begins, may be Tanzania’s most famous.

But lesser-known gems such as Gombe Stream National Park (where Jane Goodall conducted her famous chimpanzee research), Tarangire National Park (home to a sizable population of  endangered elephants in East Africa ), and Lake Manyara National Park are all equally exceptional in their own right.

Most people don’t think of Tanzania as a birdwatching destination. But the country is home to some 1100 different bird species.

Of these, 43 are rare, 36 are listed as threatened by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and 23 are endemic.

Zebras at a waterhole in Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda - Africa safaris

Winston Churchill once called Uganda “the Pearl of Africa ,” and the country’s natural attractions have helped it move up in the rankings of the best safari destinations in recent years.

In addition to its impressive array of wildlife (around 365 species of mammals and nearly 1100 species of birds ), Uganda is also home to African’s highest mountain range as well as the world’s largest free-standing volcano, second-largest freshwater lake, and the headwaters of the world’s longest river.

The Bwindi Impenetrable Forest , which is home to nearly half of the world’s remaining mountain gorilla population, is the most well-known of Uganda’s protected areas.

But the 93,065-square-mile country boasts nearly 30 other national parks, wildlife reserves, and sanctuaries that are equally worthy a visit for lovers of nature and wildlife.

Visitors to Queen Elizabeth National Park can enjoy tracking chimpanzees in Kyambura Gorge and looking for the unusual tree-climbing lions of the Ishasha sector.

Murchison Falls National Park allows visitors to take a wildlife-watching cruise along the Nile River : The area is home to approximately 450 species of birds and over 75 species of mammals.

And the forests of Kibale National Park, which is next to Queen Elizabeth, is home to chimpanzees and 12 other primate species.

Thornicraft's giraffe - safari holidays in africa

Though not nearly as popular as the traditional African safari destinations (Kenya and Tanzania), Zambia– like Botswana– is widely considered the continent’s next big thing.

The President is keen on conservation, the nation’s economy and infrastructure growing quickly, and there are 20 national parks within its 290,587-square mile area.

The most famous of these is Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, which is named after the Lozi language phrase for the legendary Victoria Falls, “ The Smoke Which Thunders .”

The park borders the Zambezi River and is mirrored on the other side by Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls National Park.

The wildlife section of the park is home to animals such as African elephants , Angolan giraffe, Burchell’s zebra, Cape buffalo, crocodiles, hippos, impala, sable antelope, and more.

But there are numerous other noteworthy national parks in Zambia. The Lower Zambezi National Park offers a rare opportunity for a safari by canoe, with animals such as hyena, leopards and lions occasionally seen stalking impala, waterbuck, and other ungulates near the water’s edge.

The 3,400 square mile South Luangwa National Park offers world-class African safaris, including the rare Thornicraft’s giraffe and around 14,000 elephants.

And the privately managed Kasanka National Park, located along the Lake Bangweulu basin, is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 400 different avian species.

10. ZIMBABWE

Zimbabwe’s reputation was tarnished for years, due in part to the iron-fisted rule of dictator Robert Mugabe and in part to the controversial killing of the world-renowned Cecil the Lion.

But since Mugabe was ousted by a coup that forced his resignation in 2017, both the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority and the local tourism industry seem determined to make the country a premiere place for African safaris.

Inbound tourism to Zimbabwe hit record highs within a few months of Mugabe’s resignation. Interest in the country is surging rapidly as the new administration works to develop infrastructure that will help it meet consumer expectations.

The 354-foot tall Victoria Falls is its most popular attraction. White water rafting , bungee jumping, and wildlife safaris in the neighboring (and much larger) Zambezi National Park are among the many activities on offer in the area.

But irresponsible tourism practices, including walking with lions and elephant riding tours , still abound.

But there are other great safari options in the country. Hwangwe National Park is the largest and most famous, as this is where Cecil was killed in 2015.

It’s home to more than 100 species of mammals (including a large population of endangered Cape wild dogs) and 400 species of birds.

What people love about East Africa Tours for Couples

We had an amazing Tanzania safari to Tanzania! Our guide was gracious and knowledgeable and found us so many animals, including all of the Big Five! Kiriwe Travel made the booking so easy; Frank was wonderful to work with. Everything ran so smoothly and exceeded my wildest expectations. If you want to see it all and just book 10 day Tanzania great wildebeest migration. It was truly stupendous! We will be sure to book with you again in the near future!!
It was my first time to visit Tanzania and i was worried my colleagues did safari with this company told me it was okay because they provide best service and their pickup and drop off work really great also during the safari they provide us with the refreshments drinks also she ensure me that it will take away my stress from work.So i book for 5 day safari and it was wounderfull the driver have experience over 15 year and they were very kindy , helpfully the they give us time to see everything, the hotel was nice and the driver take alot of care after safari they told us if we were interested to see the orphans home
It was nice to have a good tour guide to find the animals and guide us to the points of interest along the way.
