The album was also a commercial success, debuting at number three on the Billboard 200 and eventually being certified platinum. Index

The last time that SZA played a headlining show in Portland was six years ago at the modest Roseland Theater (capacity 1,410) while supporting her sophomore album, CTRL . Now embarking on her first solo arena tour, the rapidly rising neo-soul sensation will ignite Moda Center (capacity 19,980!) with songs from her new album SOS , which dances between cheeky TikTok-friendly bops about murdering your ex ("Kill Bill") to heartwrenching folk-infused ballads (e.g. "Ghost in the Machine" ft. Phoebe Bridgers and "Nobody Gets Me"). Fellow R&B pop heavy Omar Apollo will open the night with tracks from his acclaimed debut album, Ivory .

Omar Apollo and SZA Bring Super-charged, Emotive SOS Tour to Portland’s Moda Center

sza tour portland oregon

As a fan long before her official studio debut (‘ See.SZA.Run ’ anyone?), I’ve witnessed the dizzying rise of fame for the songstress known as SZA , real name Solána Imani Rowe. Her honest and emotionally charged lyrics strike a chord with listeners from around the world, but especially those in the throes of adulthood, young love and tumultous heartbreak. The impressive success of 2017’s CTRL , which is still topping charts six years later, has been effortlessly followed up with massive acclaim brought by SZA’s sophomore album, SOS .

Though SOS is only the artists’ second concert tour, the management team decided to shoot for the stars, leaving the small, tightly-packed theaters from her first tour in the rearview and opting for sold-out, staggering arenas. With many superstar tours dropping in 2023, including Beyoncé, Janet Jackson and Taylor Swift, SZA boasts the hottest ticket of the year thus far. Leading into the final handful of SOS dates, the Portland, Oregon, show on March 18 at the Moda Center was my opportunity to witness the over-the-top production and synchronized performance flair taking the media by storm since the tours’ launch in February.

The evenings’ opener Omar Apollo was a choice of perfection, with the alternative R&B artist walking out to an excited and adoring crowd. Developing a cult-like following since the release of his debut album Ivory and recently being nominated for a Grammy this year, Apollo exuded a humbling and magnetic stage presence. If you are yet to be familiar with this immensely talented, genre-shifting sensation, please take this opportunity to explore his intoxicating fusion of contemporary hip-hop and soulful Latin ballads.

I dare anyone to see Omar Apollo live and walk away unimpressed. Though SZA was icing on the cake, it was Apollo that blew me away.

From beginning to end, SZA brought her conceptual vision of SOS to cinematic life in impeccable form. Embracing the albums’ nautical thematics by spotlighting allegories we’ve inevitably had to face – diving to unknown depths, navigating stormy seas and sometimes, the daunting decision to sink or swim – were all portrayed in a powerful and immersive two-hour experience by the wondrously creative team at Human Person . These weren’t only limited to projections; several large-scale, physical fabrications, including a diving board, a gigantic ship’s bow and mast, a lighthouse and more were incorporated as well. The biggest marvel of any live show for me always lies in the dedicated and hard working industry workers executing these ambitious music productions. Trying to imagine the amount of people it takes to put on high-scale, intricately detailed events like these is a ridiculous feat, all made to look effortless to outside eyes.

In addition to the artistic elements of the show, SZA’s performance itself was heavenly and gilded, featuring bouncy choreography, soaring melodies and a tight, absolute rockstar band flanking both sides of the stage. Her tracklist was SOS heavy as expected, but also featured beloved Ctrl gems ‘Love Galore’, ‘Broken Clocks’, ‘Prom’, ‘Garden (Say It Like Dat)’, ‘Drew Barrymore’ and a cover of Erykah Badu’s ‘Bag Lady’. Though the night was full of momentous energy, the pinnacle of the show was felt towards the performances’ end. Hoisted above the crowd in a life raft being guided toward a towering lighthouse of retreat, the acoustic arrangements of these closing songs proved to be the best opportunity for SZA’s voice to shine clear as crystal.

SZA has not announced additional dates for SOS , but her website lists a festival stop at Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. Stay tuned to the artists’ official website for updates, news and further dates .

About SZA: Born in St. Louis and raised in Maplewood, NJ, genre-defying, and GRAMMY Award winning recording artist SZA released her major label debut album Ctrl (TDE/RCA) in 2017. Revered for its raw and honest lyrics, it landed at No. 1 on Billboard ’s R&B Albums chart, No. 2 on the R&B/Hip Hop Albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200  chart, according to Nielsen Music. The now RIAA-certified 3xPlatinum album   received five Grammy nominations in 2018 and more than half the songs on Ctrl  are currently certified multi-Platinum and Gold. Ctrl  remains on the Billboard 200  chart since its release in 2017 and holds the record for the longest run for any Black female artist’s debut album. In 2022 alone it sold over 600,000 units and is the 10th best-selling female album this year in the country and 50th best-selling album in 2022 overall.

SZA has won various awards since the release of Ctrl including a 2022 GRAMMY Award for Best Pop Dou/Group Performance for “Kiss Me More” with Doja Cat, Billboard Music Awards’ Top R&B Female Artist, BET Awards’ Best New Artist, BET Soul Train Awards’ Best R&B/Soul Female Artist and Best New Artist, MTV Video Music Awards’ Best Visual Effects for the “All The Stars” with Kendrick Lamar, and NAACP Image Awards’ Outstanding New Artist. In 2019, she won NAACP Image Awards’ Outstanding Duo or Group for “All The Stars” with Kendrick Lamar and Outstanding Soundtrack/Compilation for the Black Panther Soundtrack . SZA also received Billboard’s 2019 Women in Music Rule Breaker award.

To this day, SZA continues to set the standard on creativity and songwriting, while shattering records with over 7.2 billion streams worldwide across all platforms.   To close out the trying year of 2020, SZA gifted fans on Christmas Day with the hopeful track “Good Days.” Grammy-nominated for Best R&B Song, the single quickly became SZA’s greatest gainer solo single release, peaking at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100  chart and marking her first time in the chart’s top ten as the main artist. December 2021, SZA scored her second lead artist top 10 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart with the official release of “I Hate U,” which debuted at #7. The song also entered at #1 on both Spotify and Apple Music US charts and broke the record for the most streamed R&B song by a female artist on Apple Music in its first week.  “Shirt,” her most recent single has garnered over 60 million streams globally since its release in October. SZA’s long-awaited new album SOS  includes features by Travis Scott, Don Toliver, Phoebe Bridgers and Ol’ Dirty Bastard; with production by Ctrl  hitmaking collaborators ThankGod4Cody and Carter Lang, alongside Jeff Bhasker, Rob Bisel, Benny Blanco, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds, Emile Haynie, Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Jay Versace, and more.

Born in St.

About Omar Apollo

Omar Apollo is one of music’s most exciting shape-shifters. In just a few years time, the Indiana-raised Mexican-American singer-songwriter went from teenage strummer to one of the most hotly-tipped rising stars of his generation— most recently honored with a Grammy Nomination for Best New Artist. His debut, critically acclaimed album “Ivory” released in April 2022 featured the Billboard Hot 100 hit “Evergreen” and was supported by 2 sold out North American tours including stops at historic venues like The Greek Theatre, Kings Theatre, and Coachella.

SZA, Kali Uchis and Tank and the Bangas light up Portland’s spring concert calendar

There’s a light at the end of this wintery tunnel, and it leads to fresh batch of outstanding shows. Late March brings a visit from Carrie Underwood’s epic Denim & Rhinestones Tour at Moda Center, and Tank and the Bangas will dazzle a lucky audience at Revolution Hall. Later this spring, Kali Uchis takes the stage at Keller Auditorium, and desert blues abound at Wonder Ballroom from Tuareg guitar heroes Tinariwen.

Some venues are still mandating COVID-19 precautions like masks and proof of vaccination. Check with the venue for updated requirements.

Carrie Underwood

Now on her Denim & Rhinestones Tour, country-pop powerhouse Carrie Underwood is at the top of her game and still climbing. Fans will get to see her flaunt those iconic legs while belting out early, fresh-off-the-heels-of-American Idol singles – “Before He Cheats” and “Jesus Take the Wheel” – along with newer heartbroken bops like “Hate My Heart” and “Ghost Story.”

7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 16, Moda Center; $55.50-$172, Ticketmaster.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

Tank and the Bangas

New Orleans band Tank and the Bangas are beloved for their mind-blowing live performances, which they’ve brought to Portland venues like Roseland and Pickathon Music Festival in recent years. Led by the incredible, soulful, and ultra-animated Tarriona “Tank” Ball, they’ll be getting into songs from their 2022 album, “Red Balloon,” hopefully including the Earth Wind & Fire-inspired “Cafe du Monde,” (featuring Trombone Shorty and Jamison Ross), the feel-good “Communion in My Cup,” and the succinct refusals of service nestled in the groovy “No ID.”

8 p.m. Friday, March 17, Revolution Hall, 1300 S.E. Stark St., all ages; $25, revolutionhall.com . Also: StubHub , Vivid Seats .

2023 spring live music guide

Musician Masego performs live on stage during a concert at the Astra on Dec. 11, 2022 in Berlin, Germany. (Photo by Frank Hoensch/Redferns) Redferns

Born Micah Davis, Jamaican-American musician Masego made his mark in 2017 with the massive and catchy single “Tadow,” with FKJ, just one stellar example of the artist incorporating saxophone throughout his self-proclaimed “TrapHouseJazz.” This month the Atlanta-based multi-talented artist and singer dropped his self-titled sophomore album, following up the vacation vibes on 2020′s Studying Abroad: Extended Stay , and the sonic fusion going on here is pure alchemy.

8 p.m. Saturday, March 18, Roseland Theater, 8 N.W. Sixth Ave., all ages; sold out, roselandpdx.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

SZA takes no prisoners on “SOS,” the acclaimed follow-up to 2017′s “Ctrl.” While she’s delightfully ruthless on the self-titled intro, and on the following murderous “Kill Bill,” and “Seek and Destroy,” the trend-setting R&B singer-songwriter tackles everything from big feelings (“Snooze,” “Nobody Gets Me,” and “Open Arms”) and toxic attachment styles (“Gone Girl,” “F2F,” “Conceited”). Playing her largest Portland venue yet, fans will be ecstatic to hear her stunning live vocal, relatable lyrics, and thriller-inspired storytelling.

8 p.m. Saturday, March 18, Moda Center; $220-$445, Ticketmaster.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

The War and Treaty

For anyone who’s seen the pair live, stating that spouses/music duo The War and Treaty are vocally unparalleled will feel pretty accurate. Remember when Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston sang the duet “When You Believe” for “The Prince of Egypt”? Well just imagine that – in all its soul-riddled, gospel-informed goodness – but with a heterosexual married couple singing it, for at least 60 minutes.

7:30 p.m. Thursday March 30, Doug Fir Lounge, 830 E. Burnside St.; sold out. Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

Vanessa Carlton

Many of us know her for rising to prominence in the early aughts for her wildly popular radio-friendly singles, “A Thousand Miles,” and “Ordinary Day,” but pop singer/songwriter/pianist Vanessa Carlton is back. Carlton’s show got moved from Mississippi Studios to the Aladdin Theater, and tickets for the original venue will be honored at the Aladdin.

9 p.m. Monday, April 3, Aladdin Theater, 3017 S.E. Milwaukie St.; $25, aladdin-theater.com . Also: StubHub , Vivid Seats .

Committed to soft focus throwback aesthetic, Denver husband-and-wife duo Tennis – aka Alaina Moore and Patrick Riley – is beloved for their dream pop inclinations, strong melodies and happily married vibes. Their recent album “Pollen” – out on the band’s own label Mutually Detrimental – is loaded with twee pop and atmospheric, danceable grooves.

8 p.m., Saturday, April 22, Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W. Burnside St., all ages; $27, crystalballroompdx.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

A singer performs on stage.

This winter, Y La Bamba frontwoman Luz Elena Mendoza Ramos released “Dibujos De Mi Alma,” and with it announced her forthcoming album “Lucha” will drop April 28 via Tender Loving Empire Records, along with an album release show that’ll kick off the band’s spring tour. Written in isolation during the COVID-19 lockdown, vocalist and lead producer Mendoza Ramos continued writing it while she moved from Portland to Mexico, her parents’ home country. The album became an exploration of her complex, non-linear process of healing from trauma, and also an imagined continuation of the stories her ancestors set out.

8:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, Wonder Ballroom, 128 N.E. Russell St.; $27.50, wonderballroom.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

English R&B singer-songwriter Ella Mai has one of those distinct voices that’s full, deep, and smooth as honey. Having gotten her start auditioning as part of a trio on The X-Factor , Ella Mai previously played Portland venues like Crystal Ballroom, as opening support for fellow R&B artist Kehlani. The Portland crowd gave the singer an overwhelmingly positive reception, and that was the foreshadowing of her imminent rise to mainstream success. 8:30 p.m. Sunday, May 14, Crystal Ballroom, 1332 W. Burnside St., all ages; $39.50-$50, crystalballroompdx.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

Raspy-voiced singer Rico Nasty is known for her eclectic range of influences, from punk rap to her self-described “sugar trap,” but her latest album Las Ruinas takes that to a whole other level. Along with highlights from Las Ruinas , and 2020′s Nightmare Vacation, she’s basically guaranteed to perform early hits like “Smack A Bitch” and “Poppin,” which could have the Roseland as lit as it’s ever been.

8 p.m. Wednesday, May 17, Roseland Theater, 8 N.W. Sixth Ave., all ages; $25, roselandpdx.com . Also: SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

Sampa the Great

Having been a clear highlight at last year’s Pickathon Music Festival, Zambian singer/rapper/songwriter Sampa the Great headlines this highly anticipated show at Revolution Hall. Sampa the Great puts on fleshed out, high-energy, unforgettable live shows showcasing impeccable live versions of songs like the feminine-powered “Energy,” and chilling pro-Black anthems “Final Form” and “Never Forget.”

8 p.m. Thursday, May 18, Revolution Hall, 1300 S.E. Stark St.; $28, revolutionhall.com . Also: Vivid Seats .

2023 spring live music guide

Born Karly Marina Loaiza, Colombian-American singer-songwriter Kali Uchis has established herself as one of the must-watch artists in R&B for light and mature vocals, radically femme aesthetic, and signature blend of neo soul that pulls from vintage influences, making them into something exquisite and ethereal. Uchis also is credited as director for her luxurious and otherworldly music videos, like for her viral hit “Telepatía.” Her new album, “Red Moon In Venus,” is an ethereal journey into all things soft, sultry and feminine.

8 p.m. Sunday, May 21, Keller Auditorium, 222 S.W. Clay St.; $39.50-$79.50, portland5.com . Also: StubHub , SeatGeek , Vivid Seats .

Psychedelia heads, fans of Mdou Moctar won’t want to miss Tinariwen headline Wonder Ballroom at the end of May. Founded by Ibrahim Ag Alhabib in 1979, the Tuareg music collective formed while in military training in Libya. They’ll be playing their signature blend of African blues, especially from their 2019 album “Amadjar.”

8:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, Wonder Ballroom, 128 N.E. Russell St., all ages; $35, wonderballroom.com .
