A Bit Of History

Like many towns in the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun was once a Mayan cultural center. This particular piece of land was essential for the Mayan fishing and maritime trades. After the Mayans left the area and prior to the 1970s, Cancun was all but forgotten. Surviving with just 100 residents.

Fast forward to the 1970s, when the Mexican government deemed Cancun the best place to build the next Caribbean tourist destination!

The Mexican government actually had to finance the first few resorts themselves because it took a lot of convincing to get investors interested. Yet by the mid 1980s, Cancun had achieved its goal. It was the IT destination in Mexico.

Cancun Today

Since 1989, Cancun has seen significant changes and growth. It has become Mexico’s liveliest city, drawing millions of visitors each year. The rise of all inclusive resorts has made it a popular choice for vacationers seeking convenient and comprehensive experiences. Cancun’s pristine beaches, known for their soft sand and warm blue waters, have become iconic symbols of this coastal paradise. The city offers a range of adventurous attractions, such as water sports and eco parks, adding to its appeal. With a bustling nightlife and a diverse culinary scene, Cancun offers something for everyone. It has truly become one of the most sought after destinations on the Caribbean.

Is Cancun Safe?

Cancun is widely considered a safe city, especially compared to other cities in Mexico.

While gang related crime has risen a bit in recent years, it typically happens well outside of tourist areas and doesn’t target tourists.

With tourism the heartbeat of the Cancun economy, locals and government officials do their best to keep the crime rate low and the city safe. As long as you don’t go looking for trouble, use common sense, and are generally aware of your surroundings, Cancun can be enjoyed greatly and safely.

Where is Cancun?

Cancun is located on the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula by the Caribbean Sea. It is approximately an hour north of Playa Del Carmen and two hours north of Tulum . A flight from Houston or Miami is a quick two hours as well.

Adjacent to the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef  (the second-longest coral reef system in the world), Cancun is in a perfect spot for turquoise Caribbean waters, white sand beaches, and world-class diving and snorkeling. This is DEFINITELY the island life!

The Best Time to Visit Cancun

Looking for the best time to go to Cancun? The tropical climate in Cancun is quite predictable, and easy to make plans around. Without much of a temperature difference throughout the year, (the average temperature lingers around 83° F) it’s the rainy season that most travelers pay attention to.

January – April

Perfectly warm and clear weather-wise, but sees the highest influx of tourists. If you are not a people person, consider this. The ocean, cenotes and swimming pools that aren’t heated can still be a little chilly for some.

May – October

The hottest and most rainy months of the year but still plenty of sunshine and fantastic warm water for snorkeling & diving. Also, the hurricane season peaks in September and October, so keep an eye on the forecasts and definitely get travel insurance just in case. Fewer tourists mean you can typically expect lower rates at hotels, resorts and tour companies during this time.

November – December

The autumn-winter months are considered by many to be the best times to visit Cancun. The hurricane season has passed by this time, and the humidity is low. It can be a little “cool” in the evenings.

  When Is Cancun Hurricane Season?

Cancun hurricane season begins in late May and lasts until early November, with the peak occurring between August and October. The odds of a hurricane hitting Cancun are low (less than half a dozen hurricanes have hit the Yucatan in the past 40 years), but hurricanes traveling near Cancun can still cause inclement and severe weather. Be sure to check weather reports ahead of time, and we always suggest getting travel insurance during these months just in case.

How to Get to Cancun & Around

There are a few ways to get to Cancun and around the city.

Arrival By Air

Most people fly directly to Cancun as numerous international flights arrive in Cancun daily. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is located in Cancun City (Centro) and is around 13 miles from the Zona Hotelera. It is the largest airport in the region and greets more than 20 million visitors a year.

Airport Shuttles in Cancun

Private or Group Shuttles can be pre-arranged to pick you up at the airport and take you to your accommodation. Group shuttles may stop at numerous hotels before yours, so this method could take much longer than a private shuttle (while being a bit cheaper).

Shared shuttles are around $10 per person, while a private minivan shuttle can be booked for around $30-$40 per van. We recommend getting a private shuttle if you are in a group of 2 or more people.

Taxis in Cancun

Taxis are everywhere and will take you straight from the airport to your accommodation. The price is highly regulated so ask at the taxi stand for the price. Typically $40-$50 dollars to locations in Centro or the Hotel Zone. We recommend pre-arranging an airport shuttle instead (see above).

Taxis are a convenient way to get around Cancun for sure. Within the hotel zone or within Centro, prices are around $4-$7 dollars. Traveling between the Hotel Zone and Centro is $10-$15 one way. Your hotel can typically call a taxi to pick you up when you’re ready to depart your hotel.

Taxis between Cancun and Playa del Carmen or Tulum are an easy option but can be quite expensive. Be sure to discuss the prices in advance of taking the ride, so you don’t get overcharged.

Rental Cars in Cancun

Renting a car may be the most convenient choice depending on how much exploring you plan to do on your own. It is an easy and affordable option with rental cars costing as little as $15 a day. Be sure to check if your hotel has parking available.

The roads between Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum are very straightforward and safe. Having a rental car will give easy access to Cenotes and other sites outside of town. Watch out for Topes! (speed bumps).

Buses in Cancun

The most affordable and increasingly popular form of transport, buses go to most places you want to go, and some are even air-conditioned. Keep in mind that this is the slowest and least comfortable way to get around.

From the airport, there are frequent public buses available into the city. From Tulum and Playa del Carmen, buses are also widely available. Consult your hotel for pickup/dropoff locations.

Things to Do in Cancun

There is so much to do in  Cancun!  From live shows to sailing cruises and more, it’s really easy to make each day in Cancun a special experience. Here are just some of the activities you can enjoy!

1. Have A Beach Day

The Hotel Zone beaches go on for miles and are sandy and fantastic. Most resorts have their own stretch of beach with loungers and day beds but feel free to walk down the beaches to find your favorite stretch of sand.

Playa Delfines is the most popular (and beautiful) public beach and is a great place to take a swim and lay out for a tan. The water can get a little choppy at times, so it’s not ideal for small children. Delfines is home to the famous colorful “Cancun” sign too for those looking for that classic Instagram shot. For better swimming, try Playa Chac Mool which is also in the Hotel Zone. Gentle, quiet and tranquilo.

*Note: Since 2008, Sargassum (seaweed) has regularly arrived on the Caribbean coast of Mexico (Cancun, Tulum, Playa del Carmen, etc.) from April to August. Many resorts and beaches remove the seaweed from the sand daily, but it can pile up by the water’s edge and be stinky in places where it’s not removed. For this reason, we suggest getting a hotel with a nice pool area for swimming or spending some time on the islands of Cozumel or Isla Mujeres which are largely protected from the seaweed.

2. Experience The Adventure Parks

About an hour south of Cancun are a cluster of world famous adventure parks that are unlike anything you’ve probably experienced before.

The most famous is Xcaret , with its meandering canals you can swim through, incredible beach coves, cultural shows, jungle hikes, and so much more. They are a little pricey, but the adventure parks are widely considered a must-do in the area.

Other very popular parks include Xplor with its caves, ziplines, rafting and ATVs, Xel-Ha with its waterslides, snorkeling, mangrove tubing and other water activities, Xplor Fuego a nighttime torchlight adventure, Xenotes cenote experience, Xoximilco floating fiesta and the oddly popular Xenses optical illusion park.

3. Take A Day Trip To Chichen Itza

If you’ve never been to a Mayan ruin, why not start with one of the best! Chichen Itza is an epic collection of temples and monuments that are worth the trip to get there.

Around a two-hour drive from Cancun, many people combine the adventure with a swim at a cenote on the way back to cool off.

You can rent a car and do the drive yourself, but most people book either a private tour or take a group tour for simplicity. This also allows you to zonk out in the van on the way back! Note that group tours typically do not include the park entrance fee of $30 USD adult or $5 child.

4. Visit A Cenote

Talk about healing properties. The cenote choices in the Cancun area are vast and diverse as there are literally dozens of incredible locations nearby. A cenote is typically formed when a cave has collapsed on itself and then fills with rainwater or natural underground spring water. You can swim, scuba dive, snorkel or just walk through one of these breathtaking and powerful forces of nature.

5. Go Snorkeling or Scuba Diving

Hire a tour company to jet you around the lagoons or go with a dive shop and see what lies beneath.

The  Underwater Sculpture Museum at MUSA has become quite a popular attraction in recent years. Over 500 sculptures were built and installed in the shallow blue waters in an attempt to rebuild the reef system.

The Island of Cozumel , just a short ferry ride away, is known to be one of the best places in the world to dive and snorkel, so if you have the time, we recommend you try it! But there are plenty of other diving and snorkeling options as well! Get in the water and explore. A true treasure awaits.

6. Enjoy The Nightlife

You are in the Mexican Caribbean’s party center, after all! The northern part of Zona Hotelera is called Punta Cancun and is the nightlife party area with plenty of clubs and tourist bars. Some say the best club to dance and drink the night away is Coco Bongo but don’t let us sway your decision. There are many places to party on offer, mainly in the Zona Hotelera.

7. Explore The Rio Secreto Nature Reserve

This wild little day trip isn’t what you usually think of when you think of Cancun, but don’t let that stop you from taking a break from the sunshine and trying out a new adventure!

Rio Secreto (The Secret River) is an underground cave/cenote system filled with stalactites, stalagmites and beautiful fresh water that you’ll spend the day wading and swimming through.

Small group tours include a guide, transport, lunch, wetsuits, hard hats, water shoes and more. This is widely considered an unforgettable experience.

8. Visit The Islands

Just off the coast of Cancun are the magical islands of Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy . If you don’t have the time to spend a few days on the laid-back Isla Mujeres, be sure to take a day tour to visit.

There are a wide variety of catamaran and snorkeling tours available departing from Cancun. If you feel like getting a little more “wild,” include a stop at the Isla Contoy nature preserve.

9. Check Out Cancun Centro

If you skip downtown Cancun (Centro), you’re missing a quintessential Cancun experience.

For a glimpse at the local culture, check out the public square Parque de las Palapas. The square comes to life at night with free concerts, dance performances, and street artists working the crowds with slapstick routines.

For a traditional market experience, don’t miss browsing the aisles at Mercado 23 for colorful crafts and unique Yucatecan garments you won’t find anywhere else. You will also find a plethora of fantastic dining options in Cancun Centro.

10. Experience a Temazcal Ceremony

An ancient Temazcal ceremony can take different forms depending on where you are in Mexico. Temazcal is a cleansing ceremony that is typically performed in a stone-walled hut similar to a sweat lodge. The heat ritual and the shaman’s guidance provide a unique mental and physical experience.

The Temazcal ritual dates back centuries and is deeply rooted in ancient Aztec traditions. Benefits of Temazcal include clearing the mind, relieving pain, and reducing tension and stress.

11. Visit The Mayan Museum

If you want to add a little culture to your trip, you can get a Mayan ruin experience closer to Cancun’s Hotel Zone by visiting the Museo Maya.

The museum is an excellent place to learn about the history of the pre-Columbian Maya. If you are also planning to visit Chichen Itza, a stop at the museum will help you understand the Mayan history and culture before you go.

12. Go Tequila Tasting

Tequila and tequila tasting are art forms in Mexico, so why not enjoy this age-old tradition? Learn the difference between Blanco, Reposado and Anejo, and try local brands you may not have access to back home. Many restaurants offer tequila tasting options or ask your hotel about a more involved experience.

15. Discover Nichupte Lagoon

Nichupte Lagoon is a natural wonder with beautiful mangroves and water systems to explore. The awe-inspiring color of the lagoon is thanks to the mix of fresh and saltwater. There are a number of ways to see the lagoons including, kayak, sailboat, speedboat and more.

One of the best ways to discover the Nichupte Lagoon is by kayaking. As you explore the mangroves, keep an eye out for birds, fish, and even small crocodiles. Cancun essentials: Everything you need to plan the perfect Mexico getaway

For decades, Cancun, on Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in the southeast of the country, has been a go-to for Americans looking for a quick beach getaway. It's just a two- to three-hour flight from cities like Atlanta, Houston, St. Louis and Washington, D.C. Most travelers start with a visit to the ubiquitous Senor Frogs bar and grill chain and then work their way up to the city's classic nightclubs.

But, there is so much more to Cancun than its spring break scene. It's home to the world's second-longest coral reef, which means there are plenty of opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving. Parasailing and fishing are other popular pastimes and there are some Mayan ruins, such as Zona Arqueologica El Rey, that you can see right in town.

When to visit Cancun

December through April is peak season in this part of Mexico, but steer clear of March and April if you wish to avoid spring breakers. May through August brings warmer and more humid weather. You may encounter perfect weather from September through November, but it's the season for rain and hurricanes so keep that in mind as a possibility.

If you travel during hurricane season and your trip investment is hefty, consider buying trip insurance that covers named hurricanes. But if you want more flexibility to cancel your trip based on the threat of bad weather, purchase a policy with a cancel for any reason add-on .

How to get to Cancun

I know this is The Points Guy and we all love using miles and points for all our trips. However, it's usually quite easy to find very affordable airfare from U.S. gateways to Cancun. Where to stay in Cancun

As you search for the perfect resort, understand that Cancun is divided into two areas: the Zona Hotelera and El Centro. The Hotel Zone is a long beachfront strip of resorts interspersed with restaurants, bars, nightclubs and shopping centers. What to see and do

Sand, sun and sea are the main draws in Cancun and you can enjoy all three from the comfort of your resort. Most hotels in Cancun's Hotel Zone are beachfront with plenty of loungers, palapas or cabanas to choose from and they also have pools for when you're not in the mood for sand.

The world's second-longest coral reef is right offshore, so you can book snorkel or diving excursions -- or even just a sunset catamaran sailing if you'd prefer to stay topside.

If you do go diving, check out the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA) at the National Marine Park of Cancun and Isla Mujeres. You can explore 500 sculptures in three galleries: Manchones Gallery, in Isla Mujeres, where the sculptures are 26 feet deep and Punta Nizuc Gallery and Punta Sam Gallery, both in Cancun, with sculptures at a depth of 3 feet.

Shop for Mexican handicrafts at Mercado 28, located downtown. Just be ready for aggressive sales tactics and know that negotiating price is expected. There are some good restaurants and street food in the area and it's also a good place to find tour operators if you're not satisfied with the options at your hotel. You can book everything from parasailing to horseback riding to trips to a local cenote (a sinkhole swimming hole).

For a bit of history, check out the Mayan Museum of Cancun and the Zona Arqueologica El Rey ruins.

Finally, for adrenaline junkies, Xavage by Xcaret offers white-water rafting, jet boat tours, ziplines, ropes courses and even a "monster truck" experience.

Safety in Mexico

The U.S. Department of State, Bureau of Consular Affairs has issued a Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory for Mexico. You can read the COVID-19 health alert and the security alert pertaining to cartel violence in the country.

Despite the travel advisory, many Americans feel safe traveling to Cancun because it is a very defined resort area catering to tourists. Some visitors preferred to stay at their resort for the entirety of their stay. If you venture beyond your resort, take the same type of precautions you would at home. Be aware of your surroundings, know where you're going and how to get there, and avoid sketchy areas. Your hotel concierge can help you map out a plan to see the surrounding areas in a safe way.

If I’m being honest, the main drag is very touristy and kind of terrible. It’s a good place to go for your stereotypical vacation but there’s not much more than that there. During spring break, college kids flock here to get drunk and tan so it’s best to avoid visiting then (unless you also want to partake in the rowdy festivities). This is a city that was built for tourists.

However, if you leave the main resort area of Cancun, you’ll find a city with friendly people, character, and amazing food. It’s real Mexico!

And, throughout the region, you’ll also find plenty of Mayan ruins and numerous cenotes.

Cancun has a lot more to it than just Senor Frogs, resorts, and drunk college kids, but you do have to go looking for it.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Cancun

1. Explore Chichén Itzá

Chichén Itzá is a Mayan ruin dating back to 550 CE. It was home to an estimated 35,000 people – the most populous city in the Yucatan Peninsula. Historians believe the location was chosen due to its proximity to Xtoloc cenote, an underground freshwater source. Today, it is one of the largest (and most popular) Mayan archaeological sites in Mexico and one of the Wonders of the World. You can wander the UNESCO World Heritage Site’s ruins, including 5 square kilometers (1.9 square miles) of temples, intricately carved columns, tombs, and even ball courts. At the center of the ruins sits the famed El Castillo pyramid, a massive structure towering meters (98 feet). Entry is 571 MXN.

2. Explore the cenotes

In Cancun, you can find some of the world’s best underwater cenotes (natural pits or sinkholes that expose fresh groundwater) and cavern systems. The Yucatan Peninsula is famous for its cenotes, and they were an important resource for the ancient Maya. Popular cenotes near Cancun include Cenote Azul (150 MXN), Cenote Ik Kil (150 MXN), Gran Cenote (500 MXN), and Cenote Zahil Ha (200 MXN). Most are less than two hours away from the city by car.

3. Relax on Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres , which translates to “Women Island,” is just a short ferry ride away from Cancun. Originally a fishing village, the island maintains its charming atmosphere while being home to some 23,000 people. Kayaking, fishing, sailing, and swimming with sharks are popular activities here. You can enjoy snorkeling or scuba diving in the crystal clear Caribbean sea. The island is also a hatching ground for baby sea turtles.

4. Check out Cancun Underwater Museum

The Museo Subacuático de Arte features over 500 underwater sculptures in Cancun National Marine Park, which are designed to be platforms for coral growth to regenerate the damaged ecosystem. You can experience the magic via snorkeling, scuba diving, and glass-bottom boat tours. Since its founding in 2009, a lot of growth has occurred and every spring, more plants bloom. Snorkeling tours of the Underwater Museum cost around 965 MXN.

The downtown area is home to most of the colorful local craft markets in Cancun. Leather, silver, pottery, glassware, artwork, handicrafts, and traditional Mexican blankets are all sold here, making it the perfect place to browse, people-watch, and shop for souvenirs. It’s open daily from 9am-8pm.

2. Go clubbing

Cancun is famous for its nightlife. Most of the nightlife is concentrated around the Hotel Zone in an area aptly known as “party central.” Many of the world’s biggest DJs make regular appearances in the many clubs. During spring break, things get even more crowded and more expensive so be sure to book early if you’re visiting then. Coco Bongo, La Vaquita, and Grand Mambo Cafe are among the most popular places to go.

3. Hit the spa

Cancun is one of the top spa destinations in the world. There are tons of options to choose from, all offering varying treatments and package deals. Consider an ancient Mayan healing session or go with a classic massage. Temazcal Cancun offers massages for 900 MXN and is best known for its temazcal experiences. A type of sweat lodge, temazcal rituals date back to ancient Mesoamerica and were used to cleanse and purify after a battle, or to aid with healing the sick, as well as women giving birth. This experience lasts 2-3 hours and includes a temazcalero guide, volcanic stones, a bonfire, medicinal herbs, cleansing, and teas. The cost is 1,170 MXN.

4. Visit Museo Maya de Cancún

This museum is located on the south side of the Centro de Convenciones, Cancun’s convention center. Home to around 400 artifacts from important Mayan sites throughout the Yucatan Peninsula and throughout Mexico, the museum is one of the best sites in Mexico for learning about Mayan culture and history. Admission costs 70 MXN and includes access to the San Miguelito Archaeological Zone (an area of Mayan ruins).

5. Go diving

Cancun lies along the Great Mesoamerican Reef, the largest reef in the western hemisphere. The area has over 100 types of coral and more than 160 types of reef-inhabiting fish. There are also 5 different species of sea turtles here, making it a great place to spot local wildlife. Scuba diving costs around 2,700 MXN per person for a two-tank dive.

6. Swim with whale sharks at Isla Contoy

An easy day trip from Cancun, Isla Contoy is a small island nature reserve with stunning beaches and over 100 species of birds. It is also home to a large concentration of whale sharks. Whale sharks can grow up to 15 meters (almost 50 feet) in length but don’t worry, they are gentle giants! The island itself is small (it’s just 8.5 kilometers/5.3 miles long) and is only inhabited by a handful of biologists. Just 200 people are allowed on the island each day. You can book tours through a tour agency or hotel, or you can apply to visit with the park office in Cancun. Contoy Adventures is a well-known tour agency offering whale shark experiences for 3,260 MXN. Tours operate from May 20th until September 17th.

7. Take a cooking class

Cooking classes are one of the best ways to learn about a new culture (and the skills you learn are a great souvenir too). Mexico Lindo is one of the best in the Cancun area. Located in the jungle, the class duration is roughly 5.5 hours and includes breakfast, cooking a 6-course meal, snacks, and a tequila tasting. Cooking classes are scheduled Monday through Friday, with a different menu each day. The cost is 2,600 MXN.

8. Go on a taco tour

Street tacos are one of the best things about traveling in Mexico. Cancun Food Tours offers a 3.5-4.5-hour tour through downtown Cancun which includes a market tour and plenty of yummy taco tastings, with the opportunity to make your own tortillas, too. They also have vegetarian substitutions available as well. Tours cost 1,479 MXN per person.

Cancun Travel Costs

Hostel prices – Hostels are extremely affordable and plentiful in Cancun. There are 6-person dorm rooms for as little as 280 MXN, though 450 MXN is a more realistic price. For a private room, prices start at 1,000-1,500 MXN for a room that sleeps two. Most hostels offer free Wi-Fi and free breakfast.

Budget hotel prices There are plenty of budget hotels in Cancun with prices starting around 600 MXN per night for a room that sleeps two. You can find rooms in a 3-star hotel for as low as 950 MXN per night, which includes a private bathroom, Wi-Fi, and usually free breakfast as well.

For Airbnb, private rooms average around 590 MXN per night (though you can find places for as little as 300 MXN per night). However, there are very few private room options available here. Entire homes (including studio apartments) start from 800-1,500 MXN per night. Be sure to book early to find the best deals.

Food – You’ll find a lot of rice, beans, fruits, and veggies like tomatoes, corn, avocado, and peppers in Mexican cuisine. Typical Mexican dishes include tacos, salsa, enchiladas, tamales (stuffed corn pockets), pozole (hominy stew topped with onion, avocado, and chili), and guacamole.

Street stalls and markets are the bestplace to find authentic and inexpensive food. Tacos, quesadilla, sopas, tortas, and other street foods cost generally between 15-45 MXN. Sometimes, you’ll find tacos for as cheap as 10 MXN. In Mexico, street food is the best – and most affordable- option. It’s the tastiest too and you should eat it as much as possible. It’s not gonna make ya sick if you eat where other people are eating.

A beer is around 30 MXN but double that at a restaurant.

Restaurants found in the Hotel Zone or near the beach are good but they are expensive as they cater mostly to the tourists staying in the zone. You can expect to pay 500 MXN or more for a meal in these restaurants.

Closer to downtown, you’ll find a variety of restaurants with dishes between 120-300 MXN. Choose from sushi joints and cafés serving bagels, pizza and pasta, to Indian, Middle Eastern, and French restaurants. Try La Troje, Café Con Gracia, or Café Antoinette.

A meal at a Mexican restaurant serving traditional cuisine costs around 120-400 MXN. Look for the ones filled with locals as that is generally a sign that the food is really good.

Tap water is not safe to drink in Mexico. Bring a portable water purifier or use bottled water ( LifeStraw makes a good one.

If you plan to cook your meals, expect to pay between 500-585 MXN per week for groceries. This gets you staples like rice, vegetables, chicken, tortillas, and beans. However, with street food so cheap and most hostels and hotels lacking kitchens, it’s best to simply eat local rather than cook.

Backpacking Cancun Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Cancun, expect to spend 1,000 MXN per day. This budget gets you a hostel dorm, street food and self-cooked meals, public transportation to get around, and mostly free or cheap activities like snorkeling and enjoying the beach. If you’re drinking a lot, I’d add another 100-300 MXN per day depending on how much you want to party.

On a mid-range budget of 1,800 MXN per day, you can stay in a private Airbnb, eat at restaurants serving cheap traditional cuisine, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like cooking classes or museum visits.

On a “luxury” budget of 3,800 MXN or more per day, you can stay in a hotel, eat out for all your meals anywhere you want, have plenty of drinks, take taxis everywhere or rent a car, and do some guided food or mezcal tours. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Cancun Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Outside the resort and tourist area, Cancun, like the rest of Mexico, won’t break the bank. Inside that area, everything is priced for tourists and you’ll burn through your money pretty easily. Here are some ways to save in Cancun to help you keep your budget intact:

• Eat street food – The street stalls that line the streets in Mexico are safe to eat at and provide the cheapest and tastiest food around. If you don’t want to eat there, find restaurants that cater to locals. If you start eating that’s designed for tourists, you’ll pay triple what you should.
• Travel off-peak – Try to visit Cancun in the off-season (between June and November) as accommodation is significantly cheaper.
• Stay with a local – Don’t want to book a room at a resort? Use Couchsurfing to stay with locals who have extra beds and couches for free. You’ll not only save money on accommodation but you’ll get to connect with a local who can share their insider tips and advice.
• Save money on rideshares – Uber is cheaper than taxis and is the best way to get around a city if you don’t want to wait for a bus or pay for a taxi.
• Being a water filter – Since the tap water here isn’t safe to drink and single-use plastic is bad for the environment, bring a water filter. LifeStraw makes reusable bottles with a built-in filter so you can ensure your water is always clean and safe.

How to Get Around Cancun

Public transportation – Cancun is pretty easy to get around. The bus runs 24 hours and fares cost 8.50 MXN. Try to have exact change as drivers cannot break big bills.

Taxi – In Cancun, taxis are not metered, but 30 MXN is a good guideline for city center travel. I’d skip the taxis if you can though as they add up fast.

Ridesharing – Uber is available here and is cheaper than taxis. A ride from the hotel zone to downtown costs around 198 MXN.

Bicycle – Cancun isn’t ideal for cycling but if you want to get around by bike, rentals cost 220-350 MXN per day.

When to Go to Cancun

Summer (May to October) is the rainy season in Cancun. You can expect it to rain each day heavily, but the downpour is usually short. Temperatures during this time are somewhere between 24-32°C (75-90°F).

From the beginning of August to the end of November is hurricane season and is not a good time to visit.

December to the end of April (winter) is the busiest tourist season and Cancun is packed with travelers from all over North America and Europe. This is the best time to visit if you’re looking to take advantage of Mexico’s tropical environment. The hotel zone is overflowing at times, so think about staying outside the zone if you’re on a budget. The average daily temperature during this time is 28°C (82°F). Prices are also higher during this time, especially in the hotel zone.

Spring break is probably one of the busiest times in Cancun as college and university students flock to the hotels and hostels. It is a crazy party and things can become very crowded very quickly. Prices also spike during this time, especially near the beaches. I would avoid coming here during this time unless you really want to splash out and party.

Note: If you plan to do anything in the ocean, be sure to pack biodegradable sunscreen before you leave for your trip. The guides on your snorkeling/diving excursions sometimes won’t tell you until the last minute that regular sunscreen is not allowed (it’s damaging to the coral and overall water quality).

How to Stay Safe in Cancun

Cancun has long been the playground of tourists from throughout North America and Europe. As with most tourist hotspots, the most common crimes here are pickpocketing and bag snatching. This is especially common in crowded areas and on the beach when you’re not paying attention. Make sure to always keep your valuables secure and out of reach.

Overall, dangerous crimes against tourists are uncommon here (it’s mostly jsut petting crime). The people who do tend to be involved in incidents are usually doing drugs or taking part in sex tourism. Avoid all of that and you’ll greatly reduce your risks here.

During busy times like spring break, petty crime increases. Don’t leave drinks unattended and be vigilant with your valuables. Be careful and aware of your surroundings when withdrawing your cash from an ATM. When possible, use indoor ATMs just to be safe.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe here but you’ll definitely want to keep an eye on your drinks, avoid walking alone late at night outside busy areas and just keep a watchful eye. If an emergency occurs, dial 911. If that doesn’t work (since 911 isn’t available everywhere), dial 066.

Always trust your gut instinct. Avoid isolated areas at night, don’t wander around alone at night, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. And make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past.

Everything you need to know before visiting Cancún

If my frequent travels to Cancún have taught me anything, it's that paradise will throw you a curveball from time to time.

Among the setbacks, I've experienced a costly car break-in, brazen price gouging and a debilitating bout of sickness with dengue fever, an ordeal that still makes my joints ache just thinking about it. But every time I found myself in need of help, the good folks in Cancún have stepped up big-time, and that's no small thing.

While some first-time visitors never leave the touristy, high-gloss hotel zone – which I get, the stunning resort offers pillow-soft Caribbean beaches – you’ll kick yourself later if you overlook the Centro, a bustling downtown.

This is where you can mingle with locals in the neighborhood cantinas and barter at traditional markets. Visit one atmospheric taco joint and you’ll be glad you made the effort. 

With that in mind, here are nine essential tips to make your Cancún trip run as smooth as possible.

1. Stay alert but don't let the clickbait headlines spook you

Despite all the grim news about Mexico 's drug-related violence, Cancún and the wider Yucatán Peninsula are generally considered safe.

Granted, you should never treat the crime problem lightly, but drug gangs rarely target tourists, especially if you avoid illicit activities.

That said, it's important to keep a close watch on your drink in bars and nightclubs. There have been reports of some tourists getting their drinks spiked with so-called date rape drugs. You should also avoid withdrawing money from ATMs at night, and never carry large amounts of cash.

2. Monitor hurricane season and seaweed surges

Cancún's hurricane season runs from June to November, and over the years the city has seen powerful storms cause devastating damage. Always check the latest weather forecast before you board a plane.

Also, keep a close eye on sargassum seaweed surges ( sargazo in Spanish), which can turn Cancún's turquoise waters brown. These blooms leave mounds of smelly, decomposing macroalgae carpeted across otherwise white sands. An influx of seaweed makes swimming and sunbathing downright unpleasant.

If it happens when you're in Cancún, consider doing less beach time and splash around in hotel pools and cenotes (freshwater sinkholes) instead.

The invasive surges occur intermittently, usually from March to August, but they can be unpredictable. The NGO  Red de Monitoreo de Sargazo posts daily updates on beach conditions in Cancún and the nearby Riviera Maya .

3. Tip generously and haggle respectfully

Keep in mind that many Cancún service workers (namely restaurant and hotel employees) depend on tips to supplement miserable wages. In restaurants, leave a 15% gratuity if the service is not already included.

Remember to check the bill carefully, though – some unscrupulous establishments have been known to tack on a "service fee" in the hope that customers unknowingly leave an additional tip.

For airport and hotel porters, tip about M$25 a bag, while for tour guides give an extra 10–20% of the cost of the outing, or perhaps a bit more for full-day excursions. Gas station attendants typically get about M$5 to M$10.

Bartenders, baristas and taxi drivers generally do not expect tips but always welcome them. It's acceptable to haggle with the market and street vendors to a certain degree, but remember that they're just trying to make a living.

4. Don't forget to pack ID, bug spray and casual clothing

To rent a car, you'll need to show a passport, driver's license and credit card. Mexican law requires you to have liability coverage, known in Spanish as daños a terceros .

Citizens from the US, Canada and EU countries, as well as residents from dozens of other nations, do not need visas to enter Mexico as tourists.

To protect yourself from mosquitoes and the sun, pack biodegradable insect repellent, long-sleeve shirts and a pair of pants. You'll definitely need the bug spray when visiting during the muggy wet season from May through October.

Even if you have repellent or sunscreen of the biodegradable variety, do not use them while swimming or snorkeling in fragile ecosystems such as coral reefs and cenotes. Loose-fitting clothes that dry quickly will serve you well for water activities and rainy days.

5. Explore the surrounding countryside

You can usually find plenty of things to do in the hotel zone and downtown Cancún but try to squeeze in at least one trip to see a different side of the Yucatán Peninsula. Seven to 10 days should give you ample time to tour Cancún and beyond.

Venture south to check out ancient ruins, jungle-set swimming holes and small fishing towns along the Riviera Maya, or head east on a day trip to  Valladolid , a colonial city with a rich Maya history.

Alternatively, the nearby islands of  Isla Mujeres and  Isla Holbox provide blissful nature escapes for snorkeling, diving and kayaking adventures.

6. Carry cash and bring a credit and/or debit card

Even though most places in Cancún accept major credit cards, it's always useful to carry some cash, especially in the smaller surrounding towns and islands.

Many hotels, and even some restaurants, accept US dollars, but they normally offer an unfavorable currency exchange rate.

The ubiquitous ATMs accept foreign debit cards but expect to get dinged with international transaction fees for withdrawals.

The same goes for many retail purchases as well. Some major credit cards won't charge such fees, giving you the most bang for your buck. Cancún's ATMs dispense Mexican pesos.

7. All-inclusive resorts are great, but you're missing Cancún's food scene

The hotel zone is home to most of Cancún's all-inclusive hotels, though high-end resorts are also cropping up in Punta Sam and along the sublime  Isla Blanca peninsula, north of downtown.

The all-inclusive experience ranges from luxurious adults-only setups with above-and-beyond service (personal butlers and all) to slightly more affordable family-friendly accommodations.

If you're looking for a safe, self-contained environment with multiple restaurants, bottomless drinks, easy beach access, alluring outdoor pools, and kid-focused activities, book an all-inclusive.

If you prefer the resort experience without the meals and booze, some places offer room-only rates. This pushes you to get out and dive into Cancún's diverse culinary and nightlife scene. Budget travelers will find more options downtown, where hostels and mid-range digs abound.

8. Rideshare services are available in Cancún

The app-based transportation service Uber operates in Cancún, but due to a long-running dispute by taxi union members, drivers and their passengers have faced harassment and, in some cases, attacks.

If you decide to use Uber, do so at your own risk. Do not order a car from the airport, bus station, ferry terminals, or other points where rival taxis may be watching.

For the most affordable transportation from the airport, look for the red ADO bus , which runs frequently from the airport terminals to downtown Cancún's first-class bus terminal. However, if you're staying in the hotel zone, you're better off taking a shuttle or cab.

9. Don't drink the water, and try street food with caution

Cancún's tap water is generally not safe to drink unless you know it's filtered (agua filtrada) . The same goes for drinks prepared with ice; when in doubt go without. Bottled or purified (purificada) water is your best bet to stay hydrated, and you'll need plenty of it to avoid heat exhaustion.

Eating street food can be somewhat dicey in Cancún, but it's a tantalizing risk that many visitors are willing to take.

I've Been Visiting Cancun for Nearly 15 Years — Here's My Guide to the Mexican City

Most of us know Mexico is one of the top travel destinations in the world. But do you know why? The answer is Cancun. Arguably one of the most iconic beach destinations in the world, Cancun as a city is what put Mexico on the radar for international tourism 50 years ago.

Before the 1970s, Cancun was little more than a stretch of sun-bleached beaches, thick mangrove jungles, lagoons, and tiny, remote fishing villages. The region we now know as Cancun's Hotel Zone was developed in the 1970s specifically for tourism. Today, the area is one of the most-visited beach destinations in the world.

I have been visiting Cancun regularly for nearly 15 years, which is baby steps in its lifespan, and yet I have seen the destination transform tremendously. Not only does it have the most photogenic beaches in Mexico , but it also has world-class entertainment, dining, natural attractions, and fabulous food. I also love that visitors are now venturing beyond the confines of their all-inclusive resorts to discover the more local side of Cancun, whether that's in its thriving Downtown or off the beaten path in the smaller surrounding beach villages.

And I'm not alone in my appreciation for Cancun. "The connectivity, entertainment and culinary options, and most of all, the Caribbean Sea and ultra-fine white-sand beaches are what I love about Cancun," said Zach Rabinor, founder and CEO of Journey Mexico and a Travel + Leisure A-List Advisor.

Close enough to the airport, while still feeling a world away, Nizuc Resort & Spa is all about quiet, low-key luxury and stunning design. "This is a great five-star property on the southern end of Cancun, close to the airport, but not to the overcrowded Hotel Zone. It features multiple restaurants and excellent service," said Rabinor.

Waldorf Astoria Cancun

When the Waldorf Astoria Cancun opened in 2022, it turned quite a few heads. So much so that it was listed on T+L's 2023 It List . Perched on 100 acres of powdery soft beachfront, the 173-key hotel evokes that classic art deco Waldorf Astoria elegance, with a decidedly Caribbean coastal energy. The spa, as well as Malpeque, the property's restaurant, are two signature standouts. 

InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort, an IHG Hotel

Travelers looking for an exceptional hotel option should consider the InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort . Rabinor recommends it for its spectacular beachfront access. The King Signature Suite Ocean Front rooms are an absolute dream, with stunning terraces overlooking the sugary white sand.

Live Aqua Cancun

Cancun is practically overflowing with fabulous all-inclusive resorts . But my personal favorite is Live Aqua Cancun. This oceanfront, adults-only all-inclusive overlooks one of the best beaches in Cancun, with a wide selection of excellent restaurants, sparkling pools, and gorgeous ocean-view rooms. Select accommodations on the higher floors for upgraded perks like access to the Aqua Club Lounge. Tip: Be sure to book a table at Sea Corner for its toes-in-the-sand tacos and ceviches.

Excellence Riviera Cancun

What I love about Excellence Riviera Cancun is that it hits every note just right: gorgeous suites, meandering pools, a prime Caribbean beachfront location, and a sprawling spa. Be sure to experience one of the best hydrotherapy circuits in the region, and book a table at the chic, alfresco Lobster House for a memorable romantic dinner.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

With a location at the northern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, Cancun is one of the best places in the world for snorkeling and scuba diving. Not only are the waters surrounding Cancun home to a brilliant array of beautiful coral and marine life, they are also home to MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art, featuring 500 submerged sculptures used to promote the growth of coral life. If you’re visiting in the summer months, you may have the opportunity to swim alongside majestic whale sharks.

Archaeological Sites

Within driving distance from Cancun are some of the most impressive archaeological ruins in Mexico . Chichén Itzá is a three-hour drive away, while Tulum and Coba are approximately two hours by car. You can also explore Ek Balam, a lesser-visited Mayan archaeological site just outside of Valladolid.

Isla Mujeres

A quick 20-minute ferry ride from the mainland will put you on the sun-bleached beaches of Isla Mujeres . This gorgeous, laid-back island is known for its shimmery, translucent water, some of the most beautiful beaches in Mexico, and a low-key energy that is completely different from Cancun's frenetic Hotel Zone. Pick a beach club and lounge for the day on Playa Norte, or rent a golf cart to circumnavigate the island and discover its breathtaking vistas.

Downtown Cancun

While most tourists stick to the Hotel Zone, locals will tell you that Downtown Cancun is where the real treasures are unearthed. Hop on a bus or take an authorized taxi from your hotel to discover the brilliant street art, the food trucks at Parque Las Palapas, or the Hotel Zone skyline views from Malecón Tajamar.

Unique to the Yucatan Peninsula is the network of underground rivers and caves. These natural sinkholes, known as cenotes , are sacred spots in the Mayan world, believed to be entrances to the underworld. Today, they continue to be protected sites, and visitors can swim, snorkel, and explore these subterranean secrets.

Luxury Avenue

Cancun is a paradise for luxury labels and internationally recognized brands. Luxury Avenue is one of the higher-end shopping malls within the Hotel Zone, home to shops like Cartier, Hermes, Patek Philippe, and Carolina Herrera.

Another affluent shopping center, La Isla is a hot spot for international brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Armani Exchange, Sephora, and Pull & Bear. La Isla is also an entertainment hub with the Sky Wheel, the third-largest panoramic Ferris wheel in Latin America, and an outpost of Ripley's Believe It or Not!

For local Mexican handicrafts and handmade souvenirs that are of a higher quality than what you might find in the Hotel Zone, Mercado 28 is one of the oldest flea markets in Cancun. Discover everything from T-shirts and tequila to food stalls and colorful gifts.

There’s a reason Coco Bongo has been around for nearly 30 years. The legendary nightclub is by far the most famous in Cancun's Hotel Zone and the one that brings the most energy with nightly acrobatics, large-scale video projections, and nonstop music. Rabinor said, "Coco Bongo is a must-visit, but be forewarned — serious nightlife enthusiasts only."

Every night of the week is an epic party at Mandala, a nightclub with over-the-top, themed nights like Carnival Mondays and Gone Wild Saturdays. Brace yourself for neon lights, strong cocktails, and nonstop pulsing music from open until close. 

Recreate the energy and colorful kaleidoscope of the Xochimilco canals in Mexico City. The Xoximilco Cruise Cultural Mexican Fiesta is a tour package party that takes visitors aboard a traditional trajinera boat with all the trimmings: live music, folk dancers, and, of course, unlimited food, tequila, and beer. It's one of the most fun theme parks in the Cancun area, and a party you won't forget.

The City Nightclub

One of the most famous nightclubs in Cancun, The City has a reputation for a stellar set list and dazzling light show to match. It features multiple floors, including an open-air terrace, an indoor dance floor, and a live music stage.

One of the most popular LGBTQ+ bars in Cancun, 11:11 is a staple in the nightlife scene. Here, cocktails are strong, performances are elaborate, and DJs spin everything from hip hop and Latin tunes to EDM.

Puerto Santo

Rabinor recommends Puerto Santo for its laid-back, open-air seafood dining directly on the beach. Fresh fish, oysters, strong cocktails, and a toes-in-the-sand setting make this one of the standouts for a relaxed and scenic dining experience in the heart of Cancun.

El Doctorcito

Along Cancun's Huayacán Avenue, El Doctorcito serves up exceedingly fresh Sonoran-style seafood. Crunchy tostadas topped with shrimp and local catch of the day, aguachiles , fish tacos, and even sashimi — you cannot order incorrectly at this local seafood joint. "Avenida Huayacán is the new area that most tourists do not know," said Fernández. "It's residential and very trendy, where many restaurants and bars are opening. It's definitely the place to be."

Siete Cielos Pizzeria by Frontoni

It's never a bad time for a classic Neapolitan pizza. So, if you're (understandably) craving one in Cancun, Rabinor recommends heading to Siete Cielos Pizzeria by Frontoni. Located near Puerto Cancun, the funky alfresco joint serves wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, calzones, and sweet treats.

If you still haven't quite satisfied that Italian craving, Rabinor says Cenacolo serves the best Italian food in the city. The elegant restaurant has an impeccable wine list, gorgeous cocktails, and a menu of handmade pasta that may have you Googling the next flight deal to Rome. 

Marbella Fish Market & Raw Bar

A personal favorite of mine in Cancun, Marbella Fish Market & Raw Bar is much more than a fresh seafood restaurant; it's also an experience. Make your way through the aisles of a small grocery store to be rewarded with a gorgeous restaurant terrace. Choose your own freshly caught seafood from the display case and the chef will whip it up to perfection.

The best time to visit Cancun is from November to March. Expect hot days and cool evenings, with minimal rainfall. Rabinor recommends November, in particular, for the slightly cooler, drier weather and absence of winter cold fronts.

That said, you'll find the best deals in Cancun over the rainy season, which begins in June. Hurricanes and tropical storms most likely occur from September to October, but this is when hotel and flight prices are at their lowest. 

The summer months are best for diving and snorkeling, particularly if you want the chance to swim beside the elusive whale sharks. Keep in mind summer will mean much hotter temperatures coupled with high humidity. 

Cancun is one of the easiest destinations to reach in Mexico. The Cancun International Airport is the second busiest in the country, with direct international flights from more than 30 cities in the U.S.

Once on the ground in Cancun, most hotels offer transportation services for a fee. You can also book taxis, shuttles, and private transfers ahead of time. One thing you cannot take in Cancun is Uber. It exists, but because of tensions between the taxi companies and Uber, it is not recommended to use the ride-share app. Uber is also not permitted to pick up at the airport.

Hotel Zone : By far the most popular neighborhood for tourists in Cancun, the Hotel Zone is the skinny, Caribbean Sea-facing stretch of beach that is lined with the majority of resorts in the city. Here, you'll find restaurants, nightclubs, beach clubs, and most of the city's tourist attractions.

Downtown : If you're looking for a neighborhood where the locals hang out, Downtown Cancun (El Centro) is it. Packed with restaurants, bars, food trucks, public art, and shopping, this area is just as full of life as the Hotel Zone, except you'll be hanging out with locals rather than other tourists.

Isla Mujeres : Just a quick ferry ride away, Isla Mujeres is the laid-back sibling to the pulsing Cancun scene. Chill beach bars, open-air restaurants, and spectacular beaches make this one of the prettiest and low-key areas to explore in Cancun.

Puerto Morelos : For something low-key on the mainland, Puerto Morelos is a small village just 20 minutes south of Cancun International Airport. Today, it's seeing an increase in hotels opening around it, but the beachfront town itself is known for its sleepy vibe, small boutiques, charming restaurants, and sliver of shockingly white sand.

Taxi : This is the easiest way to get around in Cancun, albeit one of the most expensive. Companies like Uber are difficult to use in Cancun, due to hostility between taxi companies and the apps. It is much more acceptable to take a cab from a licensed taxi stand. Taxi rates are high in Cancun, but they're based on distance, so you can easily confirm the price before accepting the ride.

Bus : Cancun has a reliable and safe public bus system that travels up and down the Hotel Zone and throughout Downtown. The most popular routes are the R1 and R2. Buses run every five minutes and a one-way ride is roughly 10 pesos. 

Car Rental: Cancun has almost every car rental company you can think of, whether at the airport, in the Hotel Zone, or Downtown. If you'd rather have your own car, there are many opportunities to rent one. Parking facilities are widely available, though they usually come at a cost.

Cancun Itinerary at a Glance

This Cancun itinerary is packed with things to do because I thought you may want to make the most of it during your stay in Cancun.

However, you can switch around the day or switch a day out with a day basking in the sun, especially if you are in an All-inclusive hotel on the beach, by all means! You are on vacation it shouldn’t feel like work!😂

Day 1 – Cancun highlights: Isla Blanca – El Meco – Mercado 23 – Playa Delfines – El Rey – La Isla (sunset)

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula: Chichen Itza – Valladolid – Cenote

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry): Isla Mujeres

Day 4 – Tulum bound: Tulum Archeological Site – Tulum Beach – Cenote

Day 5 – Cancun backyard: Cancun Cenote near Puerto Morelos + Lunch on the beach, relax in your hotel

Day 1 – cancun highlights.

On your first day in Cancun, you either want to spend all day in your spectacular all-inclusive hotel on the beach or you can’t wait to explore and see as much as possible of Cancun.

Either way, I think a day trip itinerary in Cancun would be perfect. I have included the top Cancun sites for a day packed with things to do but you can skip some of them if you don’t feel like doing everything.

It would be ideal if you had a car so it would be much easier to move around. As I mentioned before along the Cancun Hotel Zone you can take the R1 or R2 buses but to get to Mercado 23 or Isla Blanca it gets complicated.

If you don’t have your own car, ask your hotel for a recommended taxi driver.

8.30 am – Isla Blanca

start your day with one of the most spectacular and off-the-beaten-path beaches of Cancun, Isla Blanca .

Keep in mind that there is nothing there, so we won’t stay too long so that you can explore more of Cancun. Also, you would get there early morning so the sun is not too strong. Regardless, remember to bring:

• sunscreen, hat, water, and towels

10.30 am – El Meco archeological site

Situated on the way to Isla Blanca you can stop by on the way back. It won’t take long to visit as it’s very small but definitely worth it. The ancient Mayan ruins are surrounded by a lush tropical jungle home to birds, squirrels and iguanas among others. You may be able to see a family of the funny Coaties hanging around.

12.30 pm – Mercado 23

On the way back to the hotel zone you can make a detour and check out Mercado 23 where the locals hang out. This is a real authentic market where you can find local produce and all sorts of food. You can try the local restaurant for some authentic Mexican tacos, quesadillas, or tortas (Mexican Sandwiches)

14.00 pm – El Rey

El Rey is another small but interesting ancient ruin located right by the beach in Cancun opposite to Playa Delfines.

15 pm – Playa Delfines and Cancun colorful sign

Playa Delfines is one of the most popular attractions in Cancun together with the colorful Cancun sign located right on the lookout terrace, with the spectacular turquoise Caribbean sea as a backdrop.

Playa Delfines is an equipped public beach where you can find bathrooms and showers, sunbeds and shades for rent. Before rushing to the beach make sure you take a minute to enjoy the view from the lookout terrace.

When I was younger and I just arrived in Cancun, I used to get there at 6 am to take surf lessons. I was happily surprised to find out that the surf school is still there and there are actually more surf schools in Cancun now.

Although this area is not the best surfing spot in Mexico you can still find good waves and take classes if you want to learn. Check out Good vibes surf school as well.

Otherwise, you can just take nice walks on the beach and relax after a long morning exploring Cancun

5 pm – Plaza La Isla

I love hanging out in Plaza La Isla around sunset times, window shopping, or maybe even shopping, and stopping by the Nichupte lagoon to watch the sun setting over the Cancun skyline.

Keep in mind that the sun sets around 6 to 630 in winter and 7.30 in the summer.

After sunset, you can decide whether to go back to the hotel and get dressed for dinner or, just stay out for dinner in Plaza la Isla since there are many delicious restaurants to choose from.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 1 of your itinerary

If you think that this plan is not for you, you may want to check out other things that you can do in Cancun on your day-1. Here is a list

✔️ Relax on the beach in one of the all-inclusive hotels – If you chose among the spectacular Cancun All-inclusive resorts I suppose you want to spend at least one day in the resort enjoying the beautiful If you are not staying in a resort on the beach, worry not.

Many hotels offer a day pass option, where you can pay a fee that usually includes lunch and drinks and the use of beach beds and hotel facilities.

✔️ Join a tour on the Nichupte’ Lagoon – The Nichupte’ Lagoon is a spectacular huge body of water that separates Cancun Downtown from the Hotel Zone. It’s home to a wealth of wildlife and a great place to practice all sorts of watersports.

There are different tours that take you to explore the Nichupte lagoon. Here are my favorite ones:

👉 Sunset boat tour – One is a 4-hour tour at sunset by a small fisherman boat cruising around the mangroves spotting the wildlife and watching the sunset that you can drive yourself. Another one, more eco-friendly and fun, in my opinion, is kayaking either at sunrise or sunset. ↳ BOOK IT HERE

👉 Kayaking in the Nichupte’ lagoon – this is more ecological but requires some work on your end 😜. Kayaking is not easy but doable. The Nichupte’ lagoon doesn’t have strong currents so you should be ok even if you don’t have a lot of experience. They have tours at sunrise and sunset, both amazing. BOOK IT HERE

✔️ Go scuba-diving – If you are a certified diver you cannot miss the chance to dive here. Scuba diving in Cancun is a great experience ad a choice among many different dive sites, including a shipwreck and the MUSA underwater museum, among others.

✔️ Reef and Shipwreck Snorkeling Tour – If you love being in the water but you don’t dive, this tour is perfect for you. It’s only 3 hours 30 minutes and it takes you to some of the best sites for snorkeling including a shipwreck and coral reefs.

Day 2 – Explore the Yucatan Peninsula

On day 2, my suggestion is to explore the cradle of the Mayan heritage in the heart of Yucatan and visit one of the 7 wonders and UNESCO World Heritage site Chichen Itza.

8.30 am Chichen Itza – The majestic site is definitely a must if you have never seen it before. Include El Castillo (the largest pyramid) the thousands column, the observatory, the ball game field, and the sacred cenote, among others.

If you don’t go on an organized tour you should hire one of the certified guides that you will find at the entrance of the site.

Try to get there by 8.30/9 am to avoid the crowd.

12.00 Valladolid – at only 45 minute drive from Chichen Itza you will find the pretty colonial town of Valladolid. It’s worth taking a walk around the iconic plaza and walk along the Calzada de los Frailes to the Convent.

Along that road, you will find some local restaurants where you can have your lunch. There are many vegan and vegetarian options as well. Although Valladolid is a popular tourist destination, it conserves the old town’s charm.

3.30 pm – You can either visit the cenote Zaci which is located only 2 blocks from the main square, or you can explore further many different hidden cenotes around Valladolid. In this guide, you can find some amazing suggestions.

For this day, the best option is to rent a car and drive around at your own pace. This way you will manage to skip the lines and enjoy the day in peace and tranquillity.

If renting a car is not an option for you, there are many amazing organized tours, which include transportation, a guide, and a stop at a cenote and Valladolid.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 2

If you have been to Chichen Itza already, I would suggest checking out Coba archeological site. It’s only 2 hours drive from Cancun if you take the internal road, skipping Tulum.

Day 3 – Boat tour (or ferry)

If you are staying 3 days in Cancun you cannot miss a boat tour – Your 3 day Cancun Itinerary couldn’t end better than with a boat tour to Isla Mujeres. After two days spent exploring the cultural stuff and the magic of the Yucatan peninsula, on day 3 of your Cancun itinerary, we are going to take it easy and relax.

Isla Mujeres is a pretty Mexican island located just 30 minutes ferry ride off the Cancun coast.

There are different ways to visit Isla Mujeres , here they are:

► Spend a couple of days on the island

This is ideal if you have plenty of time ad want to relax on the north beach or in a luxury boutique hotel in Isla Mujeres. There are quite a few options available. You can check out my post about Cancun vs Isla Mujeres to see which destination is the right fit for you.

► Take the ferry and explore Isla Mujeres on your own

Enjoy a quick ferry ride while you admire the spectacular turquoise waters of the Caribbean sea. Those colors only are worth the trip.

The ferry lives from different locations, one in Puerto Juarez , and other locations in the hotel zone such as Playa Tortuga and Playa Caracol . Check out the rates and schedule on the Ultramar ferry site

Once you get to Isla Mujeres you can rent a golf cart and explore the island, which is only 5 km long and bask in the beautiful playa norte, the perfect place where to swim and enjoy the crystal clear calm waters.

► Join a catamaran tour

The other option is to join a catamaran tour which usually includes a snorkeling stop, lunch, and some free time in Isla Mujeres.

Some tours combine the spectacular protected reserve Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres in only one trip which is great if you are short of time and you want to see as much as possible. Here below the top-rated tours.

Day 4 – Tulum bound (4-day Cancun Itinerary)

Your 4-day Cancun itinerary ends with Tulum, an unmissable spot on the Riviera Maya. Located about 95 km from Cancun on the Riviera Maya, Tulum is one of the trendiest beach destinations in Mexico.

Europeans usually prefer staying in Tulum rather than Cancun but they are both great destinations, just different.

If you are based in Cancun you can visit Tulum on a day trip either by car or choosing one of the existing tours.

If you go on your own I would visit first the Tulum archeological site before it gets crowded and hot, and then you can hit the beach for some swimming time and lunch in one of the Tulum Beach Club.

I love Posada Margherita and Cinco Tulum.

Then you can visit one of the Cenote near Tulum and on the way back to Cancun you can stop by the spectacular Xpu-ha Beach or Yalku-lagoon , near Akumal beach one main attractions in the area.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 4

This 4-day Cancun itinerary is well-packed with all the major highlights in Cancun and the surroundings but you may also want to consider just chilling for one day and enjoying your resort facilities or one of the stunning Cancun Beach Clubs.

Day 5 – Cancun backyard

I like to call Puerto Morelos Cancun Backyard as the pretty underrated town is located only 30 minutes drive from Cancun Cancun.

Here you can check out some of the Cenotes of the Ruta Puuc, take a boat tour to the coral reefs from the beach, and eat in one of the seafood restaurants on the beach. My favorite one is El Merkadito.

You can rent a car and easily get there on your own or, you can join some of the organized tours available.

Alternative things to do in Cancun on day 5

If you don’t feel like moving from Cancun you can always do some boat tours. If it’s from June through September I would recommend swimming with whale sharks . It’s an unforgettable experience. Here is one of the top-rated tours.

Day 6 – Playa del Carmen day

On day 6 of our Cancun Itinerary, we’ll head out to check out some spectacular beaches on the Riviera Maya, and some cenotes and we’ll stop by the vibrant beach town of Playa del Carmen.

It’s advisable to rent a car for better comfort but this itinerary is definitely doable by bus.

First stop: Cenotes on the Riviera Maya – Leave Cancun around 8 am – if you want to take the bus, get to the ADO station and hop on the Playa Express mini vans right opposite the ADO entrance or the ones on the other side of the Av. Tulum.

They will take you to Playa del Carmen, and from there you will hop on one of the minivans that go to Tulum and stop at Cenote Azul.

Right there you have so many cenotes options to choose from or you can see them all. It’s cenote Azul, Cenote Cristalino, Cenote Eden, and the Cenote park Chikin-ha . They are all close to each other and close to where the van will drop you off.

PRO TIP – Mind that the ADO bus doesn’t stop there. You need to get the minivan (colectivo or combi) and ask the driver to drop you off at Cenote Azul.

2nd Stop – Xpu-ha Beach – After enjoying the cenotes you can go back to the main road ( federal highway) and wait for the next COMBI to arrive. Hail at them and they will stop. Tell the driver to drop you off at Xpuha beach. it’s just 6 km from Cenote Azul.

You will have to cross the road, so be careful because cars and trucks travel at a very high speed. And then you have to walk for about 600 mt to reach on a dirt road to reach the spectacular Xpuha beach.

There you will find restaurants and beach chairs for rent or you can walk a little further north if you want to stay more isolated from the crowd.

3rd stop – Playa del Carmen – when you are tired of the beach or maybe you think you had enough sun, you head back on the main road where you catch your minivan in the direction of Playa Del Carmen.

There you can take a stroll on the famous Quinta Avenida, sit in one of the trendy bars for an aperitif and you can even wait for dinner in one of the local restaurants. La Cueva del Chango is one of them and the top rate on TripAdvisor is “The traveler table” ( I have never tried that but it has excellent reviews).

Or you can just head back to Cancun either by combi or ADO bus or of course your car if you rented it.

Day 7 – Long day out (7-day Cancun Itinerary)

If you were lucky enough to complete the full 7-day Cancun Itinerary, on your last day you can either relax on the beach or add one more exciting adventure to your vacation.

My first choice would be to visit the Protected Natural Reserve of Rio Lagartos + Las Coloradas and the ancient Mayan ruins of Ek Balam, one of my favorites.

If you have a car rental and go on your own make sure you contact Will , the best tour guide in Rio Lagartos, he’s a biologist and a photographer and is from there, passionate about his hometown and its spectacular nature.

He’s in high demand so, if you decide to take his tour get in touch early and arrange it. He speaks English.

A certified tour guide will take you around the spectacular Sian Ka’an Biosphere, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its diversity of landscapes, flora, and fauna.

After seeing the hidden gem of Muyil Mayan Ruins, you will walk through mangroves and tropical vegetation until you reach your boat to navigate the ancient canals used by the Mayas in the pre Hispanic times.

You will have time to swim in the lazy river and have a nice lunch before heading back to Cancun.

Things to do in Cancun at night

What I love about Cancun is that it has everything for anyone and if you are a party lover you can also find many opportunities and places to dance the night away.

The Coco Bongo is an institution to see great performances and dance in between. Otherwise other places are Mandala and the Hip Hop Nightclub experience among others.

What if you are not a party person? (like me) Well, there are many other things we can do at night, besides a lovely dinner in one of the fine Cancun restaurants or in one of the on-site restaurants of your hotel. Here below some ideas.

Travel to Cancun: know before you go

Before diving into the itinerary details I thought I should share some important information that you should know before traveling to Cancun . So here you go.

How many days do I need in Cancun?

If you are wondering how many days are enough in Cancun , the short answer is it depends on how many days you have available and what you want to do with your time.

Some people prefer to have a base for the entire travel time and do small day trips, others prefer to rent a car and spend the night close to the attraction they are visiting.

There is no right or wrong here. It all boils down to what you feel like doing and what sort of vacation you want to have.

I would say two days are enough to explore Cancun and do some of the tours, but if you want to stay longer, I assure you, you won’t get bored. It’s a promise.

How to get to Cancun?

Whether you are flying from another country or from any other city in Mexico, Cancun international airport is the closest and most convenient airport to fly into.

Cancun is one of the most trafficked airports in Mexico after Mexico city which means that you have a lot of great connections with the major hubs from the United States and Europe with the best chance to find great deals.

I suggest you should check on n  Expedia for flight or package deals as they always have the latest offers.

How to get around Cancun?

If you are wondering, there is Uber in Cancun, but it’s complicated . Even though the law finally approved the car-shared services a few years ago, many taxi drivers didn’t approve of it and showed their disagreement with violent actions.

However, the taxi association decided to meet the UBER car share company halfway and now some taxi drivers have also joined. However, you can use it in the Hotel Zone or in the proximity of a taxi stand. 

How to get Cancun International Airport to your hotel

There are many ways to get to your hotel from Cancun airport. The easiest way, and my favorite one, is a door-to-door private shuttle service offered by Cancun Airport Transportation because it’s all about comfort and convenience. Cancun Airport Transportation staff speak English, are reliable, and professional, and provide a minimum waiting time service!

Public transportation

The public transportation options within the Cancun area are not very convenient unless you stay in the Hotel Zone, in which case you could hop on and off the R1 and R2 public buses for approximately 10 MXN.

To travel around the Yucatan Peninsula (Day 2 and Day 4 of your Cancun itinerary) you can use the ADO buses or the minivans (colectivos), when possible.

Sometimes, I love to join tours when they combine different attractions and destinations that would be impossible to visit by bus in one day simply because there aren’t enough connections or because buses don’t even get there.

Tours are also the best option for water-related activities, such as snorkeling or scuba diving in Cancun , which is amazing.

Also if you have little time and want to see as much as possible, tours are great and you also have a knowledgeable tour guide that will share useful historical and cultural data.

Car Rentals

However, my favorite way to explore Cancun and Mexico overall, is by renting a car, because you have the freedom to make your own itinerary, change it when you want, and drive at your own pace.

To find the best rental car deal I recommend the Discover Cars platform where you can compare different car rentals and then pick the one you like the most, for price and conditions. (Read the full Discover Cars review) .

If you want to use a local car rental, instead, I often use MexrentaCar . Their customer service leaves a lot of room for improvement, but every now and then they offer great deals and full insurance.

Driving in Cancun is quite easy although it may take some time to get the hang of it, just like when you rent a car in any foreign country.

Travel Insurance

Do I need travel insurance to travel to Cancun? Yes, you do. I actually purchase my travel insurance everywhere I go just to have peace of mind, one of the most important aspects of my travels.

If you ask me I have two recommended sites, one is  SafetyWings , which I find relatively affordable and quite comprehensive.

The other one is the Travel Insurance master  site which will help you find the perfect insurance for you.

You fill out the form with the information about your profile and requirements and they select the insurance company that is a good fit.

Where to stay in Cancun

While planning your Cancun itinerary you may need to decide where to stay in Cancun.

Luckily for you, there are many different options, whether you want to stay right on the beach or in town, from all-inclusive resorts to affordable hostels , small hotels, or apartments.

Is Cancun safe?

The short answer is yes, Cancun is relatively safe to travel to and to get out of your resort and explore. There is a crime in Cancun and there have been quite a few unpleasant episodes. The positive part of it is that those were all drug and cartel-related and if you stay away from that, you should not have any issues.

However make sure you don’t do silly things that may put your life in danger, be aware of your surrounding, and if you go out at night avoid dark isolated streets and keep an eye on your drink. Also, don’t get wasted, please!

Cancun is also a great solo female traveler destination but make sure you use common sense and stay aware of your surroundings, avoiding shady areas, especially at night, including walking on the beach alone at night, which is not recommended.

Among other things you should watch out for are, mosquitos (use repellent), strong currents in the sea, sunstrokes, and tap water (don’t drink it).

Use a refillable water bottle instead and fill it up in your hotel or restaurant and always take it with you. More about it later in this post.

The best time to travel to Cancun

It’s always a good time to travel to Cancun, it just depends on what you are looking for. Here I am sharing some information on Cancun seasons and the best time to travel to Cancun depending on different factors. Then you can head to my detailed guide (like here) for more specific information.

• Cancun’s hottest month : June
• Most humid month in Cancun:  September
• Cancun’s driest month of the year:  April
• The coolest month to travel to Cancun: February
• The most popular time to travel to Cancun:  Holy Week  
• The best month to travel to Cancun Mexico:  May
• Best time to visit Cancun weatherwise:   January through March
• Less crowded and cheapest months : shoulder season (May-June and September – November )
• The perfect time to travel to Cancun : April  –  June
• The cheapest time to visit Cancun : September through November

Cancun by season in a nutshell

June – October – (summer)  – Cancun wet season – more chance of rain (and hurricanes) and higher temperatures. Sargasso will most likely show up in these months. The Sea is warmer and Hotel prices are lower.

December through April (winter)  – Cancun dry season – Winter is also called the dry season when the weather cools down a bit and the sky is blue and sunny. The water temperature is cooler as well though, but it’s less likely to rain.

For this reason, it’s also called High Season and you will find the highest hotel prices in Cancun and anywhere in Mexico actually. It’s also the most crowded, hence the higher prices.

Whether you are a spring breaker or you want to avoid spring breakers, keep in mind that March and April are usually the months when you will find parties all over the place and packed hotels that welcome this kind of tourism.

Shoulder season (spring)- from after Easter through the beginning of June – That is my favorite season when you can find great deals, there are no big crowds and it’s not so hot and humid yet.

Shoulder season (fall) – mid-September – November  – During this shoulder season you will find more risk of rain and hurricane until the end of October. it’s really hot and humid until the end of October when it’s starting to get better. The sargassum is leaving the Mexican Caribbean coasts. The water temperature is still pleasant.

Cancun Itinerary: final thoughts

In the early 1980s, little was known about Cancun and only a few dozen hotels were built here. By the mid-1980s, with the large-scale constructions were built that made Cancun became an international tourist destination. The state of Quintana Roo currently generates more than 4 billion Dollars annually, accounting for about 35% of the total income in the tourism industry of Mexico.

Cancun is comprised of three distinct but intertwined areas: The city of Cancun, with about 950,000 inhabitants (2020) living entirely rely on the tourism industry; a protected natural ecoregion for tourists to visit; and a hotel zone with hundreds of hotels, resorts and restaurants.

Cancun still retains the characteristics of the ancient culture of the Mayan people. Mexico has tropical climate, but because of its high terrain, winter is not too cold and summer is not hot or stuffy. The climate is quite mild, making it become an ideal summer vacation and leisure destination. The North has a subtropical climate. The average temperature in January ranging 10 – 25 degrees Celsius, July ranging 15 – 30 degrees Celsius. So, visitors can visit anywhere in Mexico at any time of the year, including Cancun. However, the period from December to April next year is considered the peak tourist season of the year. In winter, the northern Mexico has a cold climate with an daytime average temperature from 8 degrees Celsius to 12 degrees Celsius, at night the temperature drops to minus 5 degrees Celsius and sometimes snow fall. Cancun International Airport (CUN) is the main airport in Cancun, about a 20-minute drive from the airport to the hotel zone. Visitors can fly directly to the International Airport of Cancun or transit in the capital of Mexico City before taking another flight or taking a train or bus to Cancun. Chichen itza.

The first place not to be missed is the Chichen Itza, which is a complex of Mayan ruins. Only here you can see from thousands of years ago how the Mayan civilization developed. When entering the Mayan’s arena, you can hear an echo. That is, standing in one spot, you let out a sound, you will hear your echo 7 times. Or when you standing in front of a pyramid (El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan) and clapping your hands, you will hear the echo as of a local bird. Until now, scientists also cannot explain why it is like that. But many predictions are due to the way the Mayans built this castle.

The complex of Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza dating back over 1,500 years old with the most ancient and unique ruins in Mexico. The second spot you must-visit is Cenote Ik kil which is located not far from the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza. Cenote means deep well. This is a very big well, very deep, but you can still swim. Since the well is very deep, it is not recommended for those who cannot swim. After swimming, you can go up where there is a restaurant to eat and drink.

The sacred well to pray for rain, Canote Ik Kil, where virgin girls were pushed down to sacrifice to the rain God. The well is located about 20 meters below the ground. This used to be the relaxing place of the ancient Mayans as well as a water supply for sacrifices.

This can be seen as an amusement area. Cancun has a lot of Cenotes, so they make the most of these Cenotes to turn them into great recreation spots. The admission to enter Xplor is $100 including buffet lunch or dinner. This amusement park is like Vinpearl in Vietnam, which means you buy tickets to enter and play games or rides freely, if you play bored, change rides. The XPlor rides include: Zipline (the last zip line will drop you into the water), Jeep riding into forests and caves, swimming in the Cenote area, hammock splash (ie there is a hammock, you sit on it then it is released along a rope, you slide and then splash into the water). Xplor makes me feel like Phong Nha cave in Vietnam, but they let me be more free, do what I want freely, if I want to swim, let’s swim…

Dinner on Captain Hook’s Pirate Ship

Another interesting experience you should try is: Dinner on a pirate ship Captain Hook on the Caribbean Sea. You can book in advance and order dishes online. Depending on dishes you choose, the prices vary from $70 – $95 per person. Joining this tour you will have dinner on the ship, the boat will sailing out to the sea and they performe pirate scenes for you to watch. I think this price is a bit expensive, but if you go with your children they will like it. The price for children is as cheap as 1/2.

Almost of the tours I took, I was not book in advance at home but book at the resort when I arrived in Cancun, only Captain Hook tour I booked online. You do not have to worry about being ripped off in Cancun because most travel agencies in Cancun run by locals, so they also do not rip you off, but also free-offer a pick-up service from your hotel.

The next place that we want to recommend to you when traveling in Cancun is Cozumel Island, where there are many of the top famous coral reefs in the world.

Thanks to a light flowing water, calm sea water, this has become a place to attract many tourists who want to dive into the water to see the corals as well as look for strange creatures, large and strange fish which only appears in Cozumel Island’s waters along with countless rare fishes swimming around you.

Cancun Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA)

In addition, on the island of Cozumel there is the largest underwater museum in the world built in 2010 to raise awareness of locals and tourists, to restore the marine ecosystem that is gradually being destroyed around Isla Mujeres island. There are up to 400 works of art with all different themes. Each style of artwork is also a highlight to make a difference to help visitors feel that each work will have different meanings like a longstanding architecture existed under the sea and was found after years of being lost.

Mayan Museum of Cancun

Opened to visitors in 2012, the Maya Cancun Museum is a place to keep many long-standing historical relics and artifacts, hiding mysterious stories. The hugh area 409m2 of museum space displays countless wealth of valuable artifacts in the flooded caves of Tulum. In addition, it also owns a 10,000-year-old bone fragment gallery of La Mujer de las Palmas (The Woman of the Palms) which is very interested in archeologists. Visitors note that the museum is closed every Monday.

Scenic Tower

Best Months to Visit

While Cancun weather is wonderful year-round, there are certain times of the year that might suit your interests.

December through April brings low humidity, cooler Caribbean waters and warm sunshine.

This is a great time to go if you want to visit cultural sites as you won’t be dripping in sweat before you get to where you’re going.

If you want to avoid crowds, the best time to visit Cancun is April through June (as well as November) are good times to book a trip.

Stay away from late February through March as this is prime spring break season.

Nature enthusiasts will want to visit in May for sea turtle nesting and whale shark sightings.

For great deals and low crowds, July through October are your best bets.

It is the rainy (and hurricane) season, so if you’re more into casinos, shopping and indoor entertainment than the heat, humidity and rain of the great outdoors, you’ll be happy.

There have only been two hurricanes in Cancun in the past three decades, so the chance of a hurricane is a fairly low possibility.

Between TSA-approved toiletries, airline entertainment and resort casual apparel (not to mention the swimsuits, water wings and snorkel gear), your Cancun packing list can quickly become overwhelming.

What to Bring

It’s always best to keep it simple when packing.

Cancun is typically warm and sunny year-round, so you’ll want to include light and comfortable items.

Shorts, cool tops, flip flops and water shoes for the beach and pool, sunglasses and a sun hat are the top items for a sunny Cancun vacation.

Some of the resort hotels recommend “resort casual” at the more upscale restaurants, so be sure to pack a nice for dining (dress for women and a shirt with a collar for men).

Don’t forget sunscreen, though you can also purchase that in various places around the city or at the resort.

Performance fabric shirts are highly recommended for staying burn-free.

For peace of mind, consider bringing a waterproof phone case, a waterproof camera and a dry bag to store valuables.

What to Pack for Kids

If your kids have a swim floatie they love (and will actually wear), I would definitely bring it along.

Water safety is no joke and the less complaining about ill-fitting water wings and life jackets, the better.

A travel baby carrier is another lifesaver if you have an infant or small one.

It’s still a good idea to exchange some of your dollars for pesos to use at local markets and for tipping taxi drivers, street performers and waiters at off-site restaurants.

Timeshare solicitors are the bane of most every traveler I’ve ever met.

They try to capture your interest everywhere.

Give a polite, but very firm, “No, thank you” and keep walking.

Organized day trips to sites like Tulum or Chichen Itza are the way to go when it comes to seeing the cultural side of things.

What Not to Do

Cancun is very tourist-friendly, but there are some tips to follow to avoid trouble and wasting time and money.

• Taxis can get extremely expensive and take longer. Consider using the bus for affordability and time constraints as buses have their own lanes.
• Don’t buy bottled water at the resort. All-inclusive packages usually include beverages and bottled water.
• Don’t accept the first price that’s offered by street vendors. You can usually negotiate to get a better price.
• Don’t exchange money at your hotel or at the airport. You’ll get the best rate by doing it ahead of time at a bank.
• Don’t book tours and excursions off-site from your resort. This can result in scams and safety issues.

Culture & Customs

My favorite thing about visiting another country is experiencing new cultures and customs . Cancun offers museums, cultural attractions and archaeological sites such as Coba, Xoximilco Cancun, the Museo Maya de Cancun, Tulum and the Mexican-themed Xcaret park.

Cultural festivals and events include Dia de los Muertos (October 31 – November 1 and 2), Children’s Day in April, Semana Santa (Holy Week) at Easter, Carnival in Cozumel (which coincides with Mardi Gras) and the Spring Equinox at Chichen Itza.

Where to Stay

Whether you’re looking for a luxury resort, a small hotel or mid-size accommodations with a kitchenette, deciding where to stay in Cancun can become overwhelming. To help narrow it down, start by deciding whether you prefer a bustling city vibe or a laid-back and natural setting (or something in between).

The Hotel Zone is the most popular resort area and offers a wide variety of family-friendly hotels with all-inclusive packages, pools, fitness centers, restaurants, spas and live entertainment.

The downtown El Centro area is a good choice if you like the beach but also want the option of other activities and attractions.

About an hour from downtown, the laid-back Playa del Carmen is for the nature and water lover.

At just four miles long, Isla Mujeres is located just off the coast of Cancun and provides an idyllic setting of crystal blue water, lush palm trees and quiet relaxation.

Puerto Morelos, located between the Hotel Zone and Playa del Carmen, offers boutique hotels and local businesses in the charm of a Mexican fishing village.

Cozumel is one of the area’s most popular islands. It’s accessible by a 20-minute flight or a 45-minute ferry ride. Travelers who enjoy history and authentic Mexican culture will love this island setting.

What to Eat

Between your resort and the Hotel Zone, you’ll have plenty to choose from when it comes to finding the best restaurants in Cancun . The area is packed with choices ranging from steak, sushi and seafood to Mexican, Italian and French cuisine. Carnivores, vegetarians and the pickiest of eaters can all find something to please their palate among the casual cafes, upscale restaurants and waterfront grills.

For dinner with a view, El Fish Fritanga, Navios and Captain’s Cove feature seafood and Mexican cuisine by the beach, on a deck and overlooking Nichupte Lagoon. Craving sushi? Head to Irori. For the vegetarian, Elefanta has lots of options.  

Parque de las Palapas is a casual and laid-back park setting with taco, dessert and empanada vendors. 

If you’re a fan of creative cocktails, check out Nebrina Gin & Cocina. The menu offers a variety of gin concoctions and Mediterranean cuisine. 

Tempo, by Michelin-starred chef Martin Berasategui, offers a Basque menu in a contemporary setting. Lorenzillo’s is a popular place for lobster. For a traditional Mexican meal, head to La Fonda del Zancudo. Breakfast and brunch at Café Antoinette or Marakame Café are excellent ways to start the day.

Where to go Shopping

For mall and big-name brand Cancun shopping , head to La Isla Shopping Village, Malecon Americas and Plaza Las Americas in Cancun.

Puerto Cancun Marina Town Center is an open-air venue with local boutiques and souvenir shops as well as a movie theater, restaurants and chain stores.

For bars, restaurants and designer shops like Fendi and Coach, check out Luxury Avenue and Plaza Kukulkan.

Market 28, or Mercado 28, in downtown Cancun is one of the best places to find local handicrafts, pottery and jewelry.

You’ll be happy to hear that, according to official travel information for Cancun, Mexico, the area is very safe for tourists and visitors. The Hotel Zone is guarded with patrol cars and surveillance cameras in public areas. A lot of the large resorts have gated entrances and strict security rules as well. It’s still wise to pay attention to your surroundings and not wander off into unfamiliar areas.

The biggest safety issue you may encounter is rough surf at the beach. Swimming in the warm waters of the Caribbean is one of the best things about Cancun. You’ll just need to use caution and pay attention to the conditions and the lifeguards.

For those wondering if you can drink the water in Cancun, the answer is yes, but with caution. You can rest assured that water at the resorts in the Hotel Zone has been purified and is safe to drink. You should be more careful the further you get from the Hotel Zone. Bottled water is always best, and it’s typically included in all-inclusive packages.

Getting Around Cancun

Rental cars are one of the best ways to get around in Cancun, especially if you’re traveling with your family. With a car, you’ll have the freedom to explore the region whenever and however you like. Buses are another way to get around Cancun. They’re cheaper than taxis and usually faster. You will want to take a taxi, or a resort shuttle bus, to and from the airport. The ferry is a fun (and usually the only) way to get to islands such as Isla Mujeres.

Entry and Exit Requirements

Everybody, adults and children, traveling to Mexico needs a passport and a tourism card (or FMM) to enter and exit the country. Tourism cards are required for U.S. and Canadian citizens and can be obtained from your airline, the Mexican tourism office, a Mexican consulate or online. You will need this card when leaving the country, so be sure to keep it and your passport in a safe place.

Parting Words 

When it comes to choosing the perfect Mexican getaway, I’ve explored quite a bit.

Cancun, with its unique balance of resort luxury and historic sites, sets itself apart. 

Yet, its competitors shouldn’t be overlooked. 

Playa del Carmen, with its smaller-scale resorts, offers a quieter escape, yet brims with nightlife.

Meanwhile, Tulum is a bohemian paradise, with rustic cabanas and ancient ruins right on the beach. 

Over in Cozumel, you’ll find some of the best snorkeling in the world, but the resorts might not feel as plush as Cancun’s. 

Cancun is my top pick for its blend of relaxation, history, and activities, but every traveler’s dream destination can be different. 

You just need to explore and find your own.

Best Times To Visit Cancun

The best time to visit Cancún is from December to April during the peak season. Even though the crowds are heavier, you'll experience near-perfect weather and find some of the cheapest flight and room rates for a winter getaway at the beach. Just try to avoid traveling from mid-March to early April – that's when spring breakers descend on the Yucatán's shores. There are also significant discounts in late spring, summer and fall, but Cancún summers are sweltering and the fall months are prone to storms.

Memorial Day is one of the biggest sales holidays every year for mattress companies, and whether you’ve been holding out for a better discount or have suddenly found yourself in the market for a new mattress, it’s a great time to get a good deal. On top of discounts, a lot of brands will throw in bundles of accessories (think pillows, sheets, mattress protectors), which can be beneficial if you’re in need of a whole new bed setup.

I’ve been writing about mattresses and sleep for about three years, so I know a good mattress deal when I see one. To help you figure out what’s worth buying, I’ve rounded up some of the best deals we’ve found so far — including a few deals that are exclusive to Strategist readers. Like most holiday sales, the deals start earlier and earlier every year. We’re already seeing mattress deals now, but I’ll continue updating as new deals go live or as deals increase (many brands offer deeper discounts the actual weekend of Memorial Day). So read on for some of the best current deals (listed in alphabetical order), or come back later to see what other sales have cropped up.

Amerisleep makes three different all-foam mattresses with its Bio-Pur foam, a memory-foam alternative that’s meant to be more breathable and responsive. Avocado specializes in making mattresses with all-natural, nontoxic materials for a human- and earth-friendly product. Helix has one of the widest selections of mattresses from any brand on the market divided into three mattress lines: Its Core, Luxe, and Elite lines each consist of six mattresses ranging from ultrasoft to ultrafirm. The Core are the cheapest and most minimal, while the Elite are the most expensive and extravagant — seriously, they are some of the most luxurious mattresses I’ve seen. Besides the Leesa Original, our favorite all-foam mattress, Leesa offers a fairly wide range of mattresses, such as the newer Sapira Chill, Legend Chill, and Reserve Hybrid. I recently had the chance to test these models in a showroom and I particularly liked the Reserve Hybrid — it had just the level of sinky-ness I like for pressure relief, as well as a cool-to-the-touch cover. The Nectar Original is one of the most popular memory-foam mattresses on the market — it’s currently our top pick for memory foam. It has a classic “hugging” memory-foam feel, but uses gel infusions to cut down on the heat retention. I also appreciate how affordable the bed is, at just over $1,000 at full price for a queen size, and for Memorial Day, it’s up to 40 percent off, along with the rest of Nectar’s mix of memory-foam and hybrid mattresses.

While its mattresses can work for a variety of people, Nolah focuses on making the best mattresses for side sleepers, who tend to need a little more cushioning around their joints. I recently tried out its best-selling Nolah Evolution mattress in the Luxury Firm model (it also comes in Plush or Firm) and was impressed with the bed’s sturdy edge support and the cozy tufted top layer.

Already a budget-friendly brand, Siena is running a 50 percent off deal on mattresses. Choose between the Siena Memory Foam, Essential Memory Foam, or Premier Hybrid mattresses. The latter is the most expensive but is still under $1,000 at full price for a queen.

Report: Patrick Beverley Threw A Ball At A Pacers Fan For Saying ‘Cancun On 3’

The waning moments of Thursday night’s game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Indiana Pacers saw Patrick Beverley get into it with a fan. Beverley threw a ball into the stands twice over his apparent frustration with what the fan had to say in the aftermath of Indiana’s series-clinching 120-98 win, which led to Charles Barkley calling for him to get suspended on Inside the NBA later in the evening.

There was one question that hung over this: What, exactly, did the fan say to get this reaction out of Beverley? According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, things started to get tense when the fan screamed “Cancun…Cancun on 3.”

Obviously, a longtime Inside the NBA bit is to say that teams that lose in the playoffs are heading to Cancun, with Chuck and the gang occasionally going “ 1-2-3 Cancun .” It goes a bit farther back than that — you can read the full story right here — but “1-2-3 Cancun” gets thrown around a lot nowadays, so even though Beverley probably wasn’t in the best mood, it sure doesn’t seem like this alone should have set him off like that.

As Charania noted, next up is an investigation from the NBA into this incident and an incident in the locker room postgame . It could’ve been worse, he could’ve said “1-2-3, Galveston.”

With their first-round Western Conference playoff series with the Clippers tied at 2-2, the Mavericks could see their season end as early as Friday night. In that case, the Dallas players might actually appreciate the contents of a billboard that’s near Crypto.com Arena for Game 5 on Wednesday night.

But probably not.

The ad at L.A. Live was placed by global travel company Skyscanner on the building at 1011 S. Figueroa St., just across Chick Hearn Court from the Clippers’ current home facility.

It reads in big letters, “Dallas to Cancun.” In smaller print underneath, it says, “For great flights to Cancun, visit Skyscanner.”

There’s no mention of the NBA, its teams or the playoffs, but the implication is clear — time for the Mavericks to start planning their vacations because this series is essentially over.

Andre Le Masurier, the global head of brand at Skyscanner, told The Times in an email Wednesday that the idea behind the billboard was “not so much to solely troll the Mavs, just to have some fun and stir the pot a little.”

“We’re a global company, comprised of NBA fans, fans of basketball and sports culture in general,” Le Masurier said. “We saw this moment as a fantastic opportunity to engage with Clippers and Mavericks fans and show some of our values and personality.”

The Clippers told The Times in an emailed statement Wednesday that “the billboard at L.A. Live is not owned or operated by the Clippers.”

“We have the utmost respect for our opponents and in no way endorse this message,” the Clippers added.

According to Le Masurier, the ad was inspired by the “1-2-3, Cancun!” catchphrase that was first uttered by then-Laker Nick Van Exel during the 1998 Western Conference finals, when the team was on the verge of being swept by the Utah Jazz.

“We’ve always thought the ‘1, 2, 3, Cancun’ meme was super fun, so when our creative partners at Courage Inc. came to us with the idea to do something clever and support the local team, we couldn’t resist,” Le Masurier said.

“We thought it was a fun way to bring some attention to Skyscanner with a little playful banter on a giant billboard outside one of the NBA’s most famous arenas. ... The trash talking, trolling and rivalries are part of what makes the sport so compelling. But win or lose, Mexico is always a great spot to recharge the batteries and Skyscanner is one of the best at helping you get away for less.”

Of course, the series is anything but over.

Each team has won a game apiece at Crypto.com Arena. The fourth-seeded Clippers won Game 1 over the fifth-seeded Mavericks 109-97 without the services of Kawhi Leonard , their star player who was out with an inflamed right knee. Leonard returned for Game 2 , scoring 15 points on seven-for-17 shooting and missing all five three-point attempts in 35 minutes during Dallas’ 96-93 win.

The series moved to Dallas, where Leonard had nine points and nine rebounds in 25 minutes as the Clippers lost 101-90 in Game 3 . Leonard missed Game 4 with the same knee issues, but the Clippers won 116-114 behind James Harden , who finished with 33 points and scored 11 of the team’s final 16 points.

Leonard has been declared out for Game 5. The teams will return to Dallas on Friday for Game 6.

If there’s a Game 7, it will be Sunday at Crypto.com Arena, after which the members of one of the teams actually might find themselves on Skyscanner or another travel service booking their vacations.

“We hope fans of the Clippers and Mavs get a chuckle out of it,” Le Masurier said of his company’s ad.
