I have a zone 1-6 travel card (monthly) and need to travel from Bishopstortford. Can I duy a monthly ticketthat covers upto Enfield Lock then use my 1-6 travel card?

' class=

Bumping this somewhat as I am not certain though I travel that line as a commuter.

Most trains from Bishops Stortford don't stop at Enfield Lock and I suspect that ticket inspectors (who have been frequent of late) wouldn't look favourably on such a scheme.

You might be OK if you bought a monthly ticket to Tottenham Hale (where pretty much all trains will stop).

I'd love to know what the answer is.

Generally speaking, no.

"You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire

journey and one of the following applies:

(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);

(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one

ticket to another; or

(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not. "

In other words it is valid to extend a monthly Z1-Z6 travelcard with a day return to Enfield Lock (condition c) on a train that does not stop at Enfield Lock, but it is not valid to extend a monthly Z1-6 with a monthly ticket to Enfield Lock, unless your train STOPS at Enfield Lock, and for this you will have to change at Broxbourne or take the stopping train to Stratford.

A Bishops Stortford-Enfield Lock weekly season ticket is £58, while a season to Tottenham Hale, which is valid on all trains is £77.

(Monthly cost is weekly * 3.84)

Basically with the £58 weekly you'd need to change at Broxbourne for a stopping train, while with the £77 weekly you could use any train.

Another option is Bishops Stortford - Brimsdown at £62 weekly; there are two semi-fast morning trains from Bishops Stortford to Liverpool Street that call at Brimsdown, so if these suit your travel pattern, then this ticket would work; you'd still need to change at Broxbourne coming back however.

Note that the Anytime Day Return from Bishop's Stortford to Boundary Zone 6, at £13.40 daily (available at the station ticket office or possibly by phone sales), and the Anytime Day Return from Bishop's Stortford to Enfield Lock at £13.80 return (can be purchased online easily) are both valid from Bishop's Stortford.

£13.80 * 5 = £69, which is cheap than a Tottenham Hale weekly season.

The monthly Tottenham Hale season is £295.70, which is 21.4 daily returns to Enfield Lock, which with a 5 in 7 travel pattern comes out at 30 days, or basically exactly the same cost as buying daily tickets to Enfield Lock.

If you are getting a recurring Z1-6 monthly season 'free' then the best option is probably a monthly + 2 days (or whatever, timed to end on a Friday), since the extra days cost 1/30 of a monthly, season to Tottenham Hale, which is the least hassle and still cost-effective.

If you are getting the season ticket free, it's still worth it, even if you have to pay tax on the Benefit in Kind, because the tax + Tottenham Hale season is still cheaper than buying the Bishop's Stortford - Z1-6 season outright.

jason said 'I have a zone 1-6 travel card' which includes travel to and from Enfield Lock, in zone 6.

I don't think jason can combine a season ticket from Bishops Stortford to Enfield Lock with a zones 1 - 6 Travelcard.

There is a very slightly cheaper option than a season to Tottenham Hale, which is Bishops Stortford to Zones 5 and 6 season (valid e.g. to Ponders End, Enfield Lock)

This is £75.60 weekly, £290.40 for a month, and this would be the best monthly option assuming you don't want to take the slow route via Broxbourne.

It saves only £5.30 a month, but you might as well have it - it is valid because both tickets are zonal so you can combine them without making any stop in zone 5 or zone 6.

thanks for teh detailed replies guys. So with the last option could i travel BS-Tot hale? Im getting the 1-6 from work, so just looking at the cheapest option to get me from either stansted or BS to the start of my 1-6 cards usage.

Either buy Bishops Stortford - Enfield Lock daily return tickets, or buy Bishop's Stortford - Zone 5 + 6 travelcard. The Tottenham Hale season works but is slightly more expensive than z5+6 travelcard.

A Stansted Airport - Zone 5+6 season is £81.50 weekly, so about £15 more per month than Bishop's Stortford and is valid for travel from Stansted Airport on all trains towards London stopping at any station along the way and for travel from any point between Stansted Airport and London also; e.g., the Stansted Airport season would allow you to start your journey from Bishops Stortford if you preferred. The Bishop's Stortford season would not be valid from Stansted since Stansted is further from London, so the Stansted - Zone 5+6 monthly season is the most flexible option for you. Obviously if you are only going to travel from Bishop's Stortford just get that....

bishop's stortford travel card

What you need to do is catch the hourly train to Stratford, that goes direct to Enfield Lock from Bishops Stortford normally arrives/departs Platform 4 at Bishops Stortford. I know it's not as frequent but it's direct but honestly during the Olympics there may be more trains on that route just check http://www.greateranglia.co.uk

Can you take the season ticket to a station and ask to have it changed to cover the entire journey - with you paying the extra? May need to ask your employer if they allow that?

Bishop's Stortford is an historic market town in Hertfordshire . The historic core of Stortford is covered by a Conservation Area, with 105 heritage-listed buildings. Much of the Conservation Area is also an Area of Archaeological Significance. Many of its 41,000 residents (2020) commute to London for work.

Understand [ edit ]

bishop's stortford travel card

A market town established during the rule of the Roman Empire, but then abandoned after the Romans withdrew from the UK. Then, during the Saxon era a new settlement developed at the same location known as Steort-ford. Then in 1060, the Bishop of London purchased the manor house, resulting in the name of the town today. The town lies on the River Stort, the river being named after the town (not the town after the river).

(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);
