Carnival Splendor Itineraries

Carnival splendor review, review of carnival splendor.

The 2008-built Carnival Splendor cruise ship belongs to Costa's Concordia-class liners - with sisterships Concordia (sunk in 2012), Favolosa , Fascinosa , Serena and Pacifica . Splendor was the largest "Fun Ship" until the debut of Carnival Dream in 2009.

The vessel (IMO number 9333163) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 372808000) and registered in Colon .

It was first announced that the ship would be repositioned to China in early 2019, then transferred to the fleet of P&O Australia in late 2019. At the end of September 2017 was officially announced that Splendor will stay with Carnival.

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Splendor cruise ship

The 3006-passenger ship Carnival Splendor is a big ship with a huge personality, which has already set herself apart in grand style. For first-time cruisers, Splendor has inaugurated a new cabin category, the spa cabin. The retractable sky cupola that covers Carnival Splendor's pool deck is also a novelty for Carnival. With Carnival Splendor, the line introduced its first-ever route in the Baltic and South America, a remarkable expansion for the fleet.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Splendor staterooms (1508 total, in 33 categories) include 54 Suites, 537 Balcony, 363 Oceanview and 585 Inside cabins, most of which are sized 170-185 ft2 / 16-17 m2. CCL Splendor ship also has 66 Cloud 9 Spa cabins and 29 wheelchair-accessible cabins. Most cabin balconies are sized 35 ft2 / 3 m2. The largest are the Captain’s Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 200 ft2 / 19 m2 terrace) accommodating up to 5 passengers.

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 8 are with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Carnival Splendor offers everything that's become a cruise industry standard, along with innovative surprises: a superb alternative restaurant, Indian tandoori grill, sushi bar, and stir-fry station. The premium coffee bar and Pinnacle supper club are the only onboard venues that come with an extra charge. The rest are all included in the fare you pay. Splendor's MDRs - The Gold Pearl and The Black Pearl, are grandiose dining venues. Dinner tables are assigned and the majority can accommodate 4-6-10 diners. Seatings are at 6 pm and 8:15 pm, orchestrated like a fine watch. Everyone knows it is time to say goodnight when Splendor's maitre d' starts singing and waiters jump up to dance on the tables.

Carnival Splendor cruise ship

The upscale steakhouse incurs an additional charge.
  • Masala Tiger (added in 2019) is a new modern dining concept created with the Australian palette in mind. It offers an authentic dining experience with Tandoori-style cooking. Passengers can enjoy a selection of chargrilled veggies and meats, curries, and naan bread fresh from the oven. The menu is included in the cruise fare and changes daily. Masala Tiger is to be located in the adults-only Serenity Retreat, also sheltering a nearby bar and Carnival Deli.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Carnival Splendor marks a new class of ship for Carnival. One of her most awesome features is the luxury, 21,000-square-foot spa, the most elaborate in the fleet. Pan-Asian in design, the Cloud 9 Spa spans on two decks and features a state-of-the-art fitness center which rivals any other at sea. There are many beauty and health rooms for treatment, as well as the first Thalassotherapy pool. With 24 lounges and bars, outdoor movies, a water slide and a singing maitre d', Splendor delivers exactly what Carnival cruisers expect: fun. Splendor's shipboard entertainment is not confined to evenings. Live music is all over the ship, day and night.

Itineraries

Carnival Splendor itinerary program was initially based on departures from NYC New York (to Canada/New England and the Caribbean), from Miami Florida (to Eastern and Western Caribbean), as well as roundtrips to The Bahamas, Caribbean and Cruises to Nowhere out of Norfolk VA .

In 2019, the ship was repositioned from Los Angeles USA to Australia (homeport Sydney NSW ) for year-round deployment. Operations started in November 2019, following the relocation voyage from Singapore to Sydney NSW. In Singapore, the liner was drydock-refurbished and new dining options were added for the Australian source market. It was previously suggested that Splendor in 2019 would join the P&O Australia fleet.

  • Bookings on Carnival Splendor Australia 2019 program (departures November 25 through December 28) were opened on March 23, 2018.
  • The Asia-Australia repositioning itinerary visited Indonesia (Benoa Bali, Komodo Island) and Darwin AU.

From Australia, Carnival Splendor initially offered 3 itineraries (Sydney roundtrips) to South Pacific islands.

  • 8-NIGHT (2 sea days, Noumea, Lifou, Isle of Pines, 2 sea days), from AUD 1130 pp / double inside cabin rates
  • 9-NIGHT (2 sea days, Noumea, Mare, Lifou, 3 sea days), from AUD 1649 pp / double inside cabin rates
  • 9-NIGHT (2 sea days, Isle of Pines, Mare, Lifou, 2 sea days), from AUD 1699 pp / double inside cabin rates.

The longest Carnival cruise ever was the 24-night Transpacific crossing on Splendor - departing on October 5, 2019, from LA-Long Beach CA. The ship crossed the Pacific Ocean to Asia (Singapore), arriving on October 30. After extended stops in Honolulu and Maui, the liner visited Guam and Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia), then Saigon (Vietnam) - all the 3 ports were first for CCL (never visited before). The relocation cruise also featured the traditional ceremony held during International dateline crossings. Prices started from just USD 1650 pp ($69 pp per day) with double occupancy.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the CCL Splendor ship was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru May 2022), and was planned to restart from Sydney NSW on May 31st. Splendor's Australia 2022 itinerary program was based on:

  • 3-day Getaways (themed cruises to nowhere )
  • 4-day Tangalooma - Moreton Island
  • 5-day Tasmania (Port Arthur, Hobart)
  • 8-9-10-days "Great Barrier Reef" (Airlie Beach, Cairns, Port Douglas, Willis Island, Moreton Island, Willis Island)
  • 8-10-11-12-days "South Pacific Islands" (New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Fiji/including Dravuni Island )
  • 10-12-days "New Zealand" (Wellington, Lyttelton-Christchurch, Port Chalmers-Dunedin, Fiordland NP)

However, in early-February 2022, Splendor's Australian schedule 2022 (June 10-Sept 26) and Carnival Spirit 's Australian schedule (June 5, 2022, thru October 5, 2023) were both canceled. Carnival Splendor was redeployed to Alaska (May 2 thru August 30), and the Australian program was scheduled to start from Sydney on Oct 9th. Carnival Spirit was redeployed to the Caribbean and homeported in Jacksonville Florida (March 7th thru April 9th), then to Alaska from Seattle (May 3-Sept 13).

Carnival Splendor Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was done in 2016. Splendor is Carnival's sole vessel of Costa Cruises Concordia-class liners, with sisterships Concordia , Serena , Pacifica , Fascinosa , Favolosa .

The vessel has Fincantieri Sestri Ponente yard/hull number 6135, volume 113573 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 11553 tons, max draught 8,3 m. The powerplant is based on Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 12V46C) with combined output 75,6 MW (101380 hp).

In December 2016, Carnival announced that Splendor will be transferred to P&O Cruises Australia in late 2019. However, in 2017 this decision was canceled.

Fun Facts: this ship was originally designed to be part of Costa Cruceros fleet. That is why the boat has the largest Spa installed on a Fun Ship (2-deck area sized 21000 ft2 / 2000 m2) with winter garden and traditional tea house. Splendor also has fleet's largest kids playroom (sized 5500 ft2 / 510 m2). The main pool area is covered with a 2-deck-high retractable glass roof/dome.

In early 2013, CCL Splendor was relocated from LA (Long Beach) to NYC via itinerary route around South America. The reason for that long repositioning cruise was that (as Post-Panamax vessel) Splendor was not able to transit through Panama Canal .

Carnival Splendor refurbishment 2019 review

Carnival Splendor's next drydock refurbishment is currently scheduled for 2024 (August 5-24) to be conducted in Singapore (by either Sembcorp or Damen).

The ship's last drydock refurbishment was in 2019 (October 30 through November 24) done in  Singapore  (at Sembcorp Marine Shipyard). The USD 60 million drydocking project aimed to adapt the vessel for the Australian market as well as receiving Carnival's signature  Fun Ship 2.0 upgrades .

The project included general maintenance works, technical overhauls, refreshed interior spaces, adding new dining venues and bars (RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar, Guy’s Burger Joint), Serenity Retreat (adults-only sundeck), redesigned waterpark (with a free-fall drop waterslide).

Drydock 2016 was in the period March 6-20.

In late-2019, the ship was deployed to Australia (for roundtrips from homeport Sydney NSW ) and transferred from CCL to Carnival Asia (subsidiary). In Spring 2018, the liner was repositioned to Asia for roundtrips from China. Carnival Asia cruise shipping operations are partnership between Carnival Cruise Lines and Costa Asia ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary on the Asian market). The second Carnival ship in Asia was Carnival Spirit (2017-2018 winter season only).

As part of the "Carnival Journeys" itinerary program (offering longer enrichment voyages), in 2018 (August 25 - September 8) Carnival Splendor operated a 14-day roundtrip Alaskan cruise from Long Beach (Los Angeles) California. The itinerary featured Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point (day-long stay, whale and bear watching, world's longest zip-line). The list of onboard activities included Alaska-themed cultural and culinary events and themed seminars (photography, arts, crafts, cooking, celestial navigation). The list of Alaskan shore excursion included hiking, sea kayaking, canoeing, helicopter flightseeing tours, lake snorkeling. In 2017 (September 2-16), Carnival Miracle operated company's first-ever roundtrip to Alaska from California.

Cool Cruiser

Would like to hear others opinions of booking an Alaskan cruise on splendor or spirit. I’m having a hard time picking.

What about the decision are you debating?

I would chose the 8 day cruise option to visit Icy Strait Point.

Spirit for the ship. I prefer the smaller ship.

Two votes for the Spirit so far!

One more vote for Spirit.

CrzRani

We booked the 8-day leaving June 29 on Spirit.  I look forward to exploring this ship we have never been on.

If only actual ship is the factor I too vote Spirit.  I did not appreciate the cut up style of the Splender.

We went from Freedom to Splendor to Spirt!  So a vote for Spirt from me.  I could not handle the loss of Skagway.

The best lines for Alaska are Princess and Holland America.  Glacier Bay is THE port to visit and the majority of visits there are on those two lines.

Alaska is much more about the scenery and ports than the ship or even cruise line. Research the ports to find excursions that interest you, then pick a ship that spends the most time in those ports.   I booked Splendor on May 2 because of the itinerary and long days in Skagway and Juneau. I also sailed on Splendor previously and enjoyed it.

I'll be there as well on May 2nd (same cruise) if this broken ankle that I got four days ago in bonaire on the horizon heals up. Don't do the windsurfing in 3 feet of water. Not worth it!

Ditto. another vote for Spirit.

#Spiritclass. Spirit has a way better layout, larger passenger to space ratio, not crowded.. Great viewing spots..

Spirit Vote. 👍 👍

skiorcruise

Spirit Class ship over Splendor every time.  An Alaska trip needs to look at ports and excursions.

Spirit class ships are the least crowded ships in the Carnvial fleet.  Thats why I prefer them over any others.

Off topic, sorry, but I have searched and searched and can't find an answer.  We are booked on Spirit in July (happy to see the positive votes) and I am wondering if a 10:30 am return flight is doable?  Thank you for any info.

ilovesparky13

What does that even mean?

Splendor has a few decks where you cannot go forward to aft.  Dinning rooms and galleys get in the way.  Spirit class allows you to go forward to aft on all decks.

I see skiorcruise clarified what I was saying but yes that's exactly it.  I like the newer ships / RCL ships that's layout is where there is one central promenade and "most" restaurants, theaters, shops etc are all off that promenade...kind of like a mall feel.  The Splendor is not like that, you can need to go up or down a deck to get to most places, it has a cut up feel to me, similar to two different 2000 sqft homes where one has an open layout vs. one having all 9x9 rooms, thought the same size a very different feel.

Ohhhhh. The Radiance was like that lower decks. Wasn’t a fan of that.

Why Carnival Splendor Is a Great Choice for a Family Alaska Cruise

Carnival Splendor at Icy Straight Point Alaska

Our family just returned from our first Alaskan cruise. And it was one of the best vacations we’ve ever taken. On board were myself, my wife, our three kids (aged 11, 12, and 13), and my mother-in-law. Our cruise was a 7-day adventure from Seattle , Washington to three ports of call in Alaska, one in Canada, and the spectacular Tracy Arm Fjord. This was, coincidentally, not our first cruise, but was our first family cruise with everyone on board.

There are a lot of reasons to choose Carnival for any family cruise, but a cruise to Alaska is often a once-in-a-lifetime experience and is very different from the usual tropical sailings most of us associate with cruising.

splendor atrium

An Alaska Cruise Is Not Like Any Other Cruise

It’s important to realize that an Alaskan cruise is nothing like a Caribbean or Mexican Riviera cruise . The weather is a lot less predictable, the window for cruising is relatively short (usually 3-4 months each year), and the costs are almost always much higher. Most people who take an Alaska cruise will only do so once in their lifetime. It’s a must-do bucket list item for most of us, but it’s also often an expensive one as well.

Knowing that, it is important to understand that if you’re taking the whole family on a cruise to Alaska, there aren’t too many family-friendly options available. Most of the cruise ships that go to Alaska are smaller and they often cater to couples or seniors. Which means they do not have water slides or on-deck games that kids might enjoy. Carnival, of course, is one of the exceptions.

One thing that is also important to note is that unlike going to a beach resort or something on land, cruises have strict minimum age policies for unaccompanied guests, including young adults. As a result, you can avoid much of the craziness you might find with young partiers.

We cruised on the Carnival Splendor, one of the cruise line’s most unique ships with wonderfully fun 1930s-themed decor, a decidedly pink and copper color scheme, and a size that’s about in the middle between the usual smaller crafts that most more exclusive Alaska lines employ and the larger, more hotel-like cruise ships that cannot enter the fjords or port in some places in Alaska without tendering (sending small boats ashore).

carnival miracle alaska

Carnival has three ships of about the Splendor’s size doing cruises to Alaska. The Miracle and Spirit are the other two, each of which is one deck (size class) smaller than the Splendor. Most of Carnival’s larger cruise ships will be found doing Caribbean or transatlantic cruises.

It should also be said that excursions for Alaska adventures are far more expensive than are most tropical excursions. Because of the limited time they’re available and the smaller sizes of most excursion groups, it can cost hundreds of dollars per person to go adventuring on planned excursions. We opted for a whale watching excursion only after getting a last minute discount on the dock as the salesperson tried to fill the last few seats on the boat. A $1,200 trip for the six of us was now $600. But don’t count on that being the norm. Most of our shore time was spent wandering the shops, looking at the local wildlife from shore or treeline, and sampling foods and other things. We had no excursion planned for Ice Strait Point, for example, but the kids had a great time checking out the starfish when the tide was out and skipping rocks from shore after we’d checked out the old cannery and its shops.

minigolf is great family entertainment

Most Carnival Ships Are Made for Family Entertainment

When it comes to bang for the buck, Carnival has more family friendliness than most other cruise lines. Sure, there are plenty of options for adults too, like 18+ comedy clubs, the adults-only hot tub deck, the casino, and the bars. But there are a myriad of things for kids to do as well.

The first stop is the least exciting, but is actually a great place to gather. That’s the ship’s library. There you’ll find a few tabletop games, books to borrow, plush seating, and tables. Sitting down for a game of cards, some Sorry, checkers, or even a family-splitting game of Monopoly is a great way to get together. We found that the library, being usually centrally located on the ship, was a great meetup area to gather everyone to.

camp ocean on Carnival Splendor

Near the library, at least on most ships of the Splendor’s size, will be at least one of the kids’ clubs. Usually the pre-teen or teen areas called “Circle C” and “Club O2” respectively. We’ll talk more about these and the small kids’ clubs in a minute. But know that they are good family-friendly spaces for kids when the parents want some alone time. Or, as is usually the case, when the grownups are “being lame” and the kids want something more interesting than sunning on the deck.

carnival splendor splash park

Most Carnival ships of the mid-size and larger also have water slides, miniature golf, and other games the family can play together. Plus dining, whether buffet-style on the Lido deck or in the three-course restaurant, is also designed with families in mind. Not to mention the various on-board activities the Cruise Director and activities personnel will have lined up, like trivia, dance classes, Simon says, and other on-deck or in-theater games.

What’s not as well known is that most Carnival ships will have a pub-like bar that is usually only open in the afternoons and evenings. For the rest of the day, it will remain open but not serving. On the Splendor, we realized that the foosball, shuffleboard, and billiards tables were open and generally empty during those times of day. We had a lot of fun playing these games during the off-peak times on board. It’s worth wandering around during a day at sea to find these little tucked away gems.

And in general, the staff on board a Carnival ship are used to kids and treat them well and are always there to help if a child is looking for parents or something to do.

family on balcony of carnival splendor

Most Carnival Staterooms Are Kid-friendly

If your cruise is booked for the number of people going, you’ll have accommodations for them in one or more staterooms as you book. On our cruise, we booked a balcony room and an interior room. The balcony room could sleep up to three while the stateroom had four beds, two of them upper bunks. The kids loved the upper bunk option and we booked that room to be directly across the hall from the balcony room. Upon embarkation, we went to the customer service desk and had both rooms keyed so that we’d have access to both rooms between all of us.

Most Carnival ships also have adjoining room options and family suites for the same purpose. We based our choice on budget, our childrens’ ages, and the number of adults. Getting two adjacent balcony rooms and asking to have the divider between them opened is another option to consider.

splendor forward dining room

Anytime Dining Gives Flexibility Without Losing the Greatest Cruise Perk

For those who are veteran cruisers, it’s well understood that one of the highest (if not THE highest) perk is the food. Especially in the dining room, which serves three-course meals and has the service quality of a fine dining restaurant. These evening meals can be booked at a specific time nightly or as anytime wherein you choose the time via the Carnival App while on board and wait for a table to be ready.

Not every cruise line offers this kind of flexibility and not every cruise line is as conducive to family dining as is Carnival. That is one of the main reasons we prefer Carnival for an Alaska cruise. As a pro tip, if you get a group of waiters that you really like, request them when seating so you’re put at their table every time. Once you get to know your wait staff and they get to know you, you’ll have personalized service and can get perks like asking for the next day’s menu or pre-ordering to accommodate food allergies or the like. Our son, for example, loves the shrimp boat appetizer and the waiters would, once we sat down, ask him if he wanted one. Since you can order anything you’d like, he wouldn’t miss out on other appetizers later, but could have those shrimp right off the bat. We had similar experience with our “usual” dining drinks and the like. It’s well worth getting to know your dining room staff for every meal you eat there regularly.

kids club 02 on Carnival Splendor

Carnival Has On-board Kids’ Activities and Safe Environments

As mentioned before, Carnival has kids’ clubs for every age group. Younger children aged 2-5 can be checked by their parents into the Penguins club and day care for crafts, fun activities, and more. These aren’t fixed times and parents can come get their children whenever they’d like and bring them back later if they wish.

Likewise the Stingrays, for kids 6-8, is also parent check-in and check-out and has age-appropriate activities for kids of that age group. The Sharks, age 9-11, must be checked in by parents on their first day, but can otherwise check themselves in at will and require only a parental OK to check themselves out (that is up to the parents and can usually be done via the Carnival HUB app or in person). Finally, the Circle C and Club O2 areas for kids aged 12-14 and 15-17 (respectively) allow kids to come and go as they wish without parental supervision and host many great activities and get-togethers for pre-teens and teens.

These clubs for the older kids, as well as some of the family-only areas for those with a family suite, have gaming consoles, board games, supervised excursions around the ship, and other fun activities. Since most Alaska cruises have fewer children on them, it’s more likely that there won’t be any waiting or large group frustration. The same can’t always be said of summertime Caribbean cruises.

carnival cruise line Splendor in Alaska

That’s Why We Chose Carnival for Alaska

All of these reasons are why we chose Carnival for our Alaska cruise. Cruises to Alaska may not be for everyone. They’re certainly far more expensive than most Caribbean cruises during the summer, especially when factoring in hotel and airfare from the few ports that these cruises leave from. But it’s a once in a lifetime thing and taking the whole family made for memories the kids will carry with them forever. Which, in the end, is the whole point.

Carnival Splendor: Cruise ships leading the boom of ‘multi-generational travel’

Within five minutes of boarding, the penny dropped. There was a clear shift in the way Australians were travelling — and I was late to the party.

Detail that totally transformed family trip

It took about five minutes after boarding the Carnival Splendor in Sydney for the penny to drop. I had been holidaying all wrong.

Clawing through weekends away with a toddler in tow (and absolutely needing some kind of holiday after said holiday as a result) — it took a long weekend at sea for me to realise a booming trend in travel was well and truly upon us. And I was very late to the party.

As I sat down with my partner and our toddler and looked around the sun-soaked deck before sailing out of Sydney heads — I noticed that with every young family lingered an older figure in the wings.

A sprinkling of grey hair ready to pounce when M & D needed “just five bloody minutes” all to themselves.

On board the ship, the family holiday — it had appeared — was well and truly dipping into grandparent zone. And for the first time, my very own parents came along for the sail to see how holidaying all together — surrounded by masses of ocean — would go down.

Cruising with the grandparents – what could possibly go wrong? Lucky the old girl knows how to have a good time.

As I ushered our party of five on board and towards our staterooms, I knew the next 72 hours would go one of two ways.

I would be installing bunk-beds into our daughter’s room … forcing my parents to live with us forever and ever the end Or, I’d be changing the locks to our house the moment we got home, and telling them we’d moved far, far away.

At first, I put my money on the latter of the two.

Mum and dad were like two overexcited Gold Retrievers on day one, wanting to explore every deck, every restaurant and every bar before we’d even passed the Opera House.

But as we eased out to sea, the calm of the ocean set in.

“Why don’t you two grab a drink, and we will take bub for an hour or so,” mum said as the sun started to dip into witching hour.

The suggestion was music to our ears — and a holidaying concept that has triggered a growing trend among travellers especially on board cruises.

Serenity pool and adults-only bar was the place to be (and accessible given the grandparents were on board!).

While family getaways are nothing new, then concept of ‘multi-generational’ holidays is consuming more and more bookings amid the cost-of-living crisis — especially when it comes to jumping on board a ship.

“More families are looking for holiday options that offer maximum value without hidden costs,” Kara Glamore, Vice President Australia, Carnival Cruise Line, told news.com.au.

“Carnival Cruise Line provides an all-inclusive style holiday experience that appeals to families looking to control their spending while still enjoying a full and fun range of activities and offerings.”

“We often see multi-generational families choosing to celebrate special occasions with Carnival because everything is in one place and so much is taken care of, which really simplifies travelling with a large group.”

There’s a clear jump in families embarking on ‘multi-generational’ holidays.

Brett Mitchell, Managing Director of Intrepid Travel agreed, saying the rise of intergenerational travel can largely be attributed to the post-pandemic shift in travel, with recent trends indicating a 117 per cent increase in multi-gen trips on years gone past.

“Family tours have the highest growth in intergenerational travel, given the concept of the trips and the demographic we attached to that product,” Mr Mitchell told news.com.au.

“We’ve also seen an increase in grandparents’ and grandchildren’s appetites for travelling together and embracing a different type of adventure. We put this down to a combination of grandparents revelling in the face of retirement and grandchildren eager to embrace experiences and destinations they otherwise wouldn’t be able to.”

As someone who typically pulls the short straw when it comes to organising group or family trips, it’s clear to see why more and more bookings are leaning into ‘multi-gen’ reservations.

“Groups can organise private parties through our events team or choose to celebrate at one of our fun dance parties or theme nights such as our 80s Rock and Glow Party or Elegant Night,” Ms Glamore explained.

“Additionally, the ability to visit multiple destinations in one trip is a major draw for families. This takes the hassle out of planning logistics and removes the stress of co-ordinating multiple hotel stays, flights and other transport arrangements, making it an ideal choice for families looking to experience a variety of destinations together in one single trip.”

I was a little nervous about what dining options would be like, but our whole group was beyond satisfied by the array of options.

While we were on a ‘cruise to nowhere’, meaning our ship left and returned to Sydney within a 72-hour period, larger groups are gravitating towards certain routes more than others.

“Certain routes stand out when it comes to attracting multi-generational reservations,” Ms Glamore said.

“Our sailings that include destinations like Fiji, New Zealand and Vanuatu are particularly popular among multi-generational bookings.

“These destinations offer exotic experiences and natural beauty that appeal across generations, from the younger members who enjoy the beaches, water activities and adventure sports to the older generations who appreciate the scenic landscapes and cultural excursions.

Carnival Splendor’s decor is bright and loud, leaning in to the fun of the ship.

“These routes allow families to experience a diverse range of destinations in one trip without the hassle of multiple bookings and logistic planning, making them ideal for multi-generational groups looking to make the most of their time together.

“Additionally, our cruises that visit local Australian treasures like Airlie Beach and Tangalooma on Moreton Island are favourites due to their accessibility and the variety of activities available, which cater to different ages and interests.”

A few hours baby free calls for cocktails. Many cocktails.

But the real appeal of these cruise-to-nowhere voyages is the need to not leave the ship at all — with several swimming pools, multiple restaurants, games rooms, stage shows, minigolf, day spas and a casino all within footsteps of each other.

“We offer fun for guests of all ages, so it’s the perfect opportunity to create special memories and share new experiences as a family,” Ms Glamore explained.

“With over 45 on-board activities to choose from, there’s something for everyone, from kids to grandparents and everyone in between.

We did a 'multi-gen' cruise and finally felt like I was on holiday.

“Some of our activities suitable for the whole family include our fan-favourite Sail Away parties that celebrate the start of each cruise, where our guests and team gather on the main deck to dance and party! Our Dive-In-Movies are another activity designed for the whole family to enjoy together, where you can enjoy blockbuster movies and fresh popcorn under the stars, from your lounge chair or while you swim. We also offer family friendly comedy, karaoke, trivia and games.”

Having mum and dad around was not only a highlight for me, it made our daughter’s trip all the more enjoyable. And for us all, it will be a memory thrown around the dinner table for years to come.

So what else was the highlight?

For me, you cannot go past a reservation at Fahrenheit 555. The ship’s fine dining steakhouse has some of the most incredible meals on offer.

The menu features premium cuts of beef cooked to your exact specification, as well as a huge selection of seafood, vegetarian dishes and an extensive wine list.

The restaurant has an elegant-yet-modern atmosphere (a perfect spot to dine on the more formal night of your cruise) and has incredible views over the ocean.

For a bit of pampering, make sure to book a treatment or two at the adults-only Cloud 9 Spa.

A complete oasis of relaxation away from the kids, you will not want to leave.

Make sure to spend an hour or two at Cloud 9 day spa.

The one-hour relaxation massage will send you straight to sleep — and be sure to book an hour or two at the thermal pool afterwards to complete your experience.

Carnival Cruise Classes

Carnival Cruise ships are divided into 8 different classes including Excel, Dream, Splendor, Conquest, Spirit, Sunshine, and Fantasy. Each class differs in amenities, type of cruise, and destination. This can help you with narrowing down which Carnival ship is the best option for you.

Excel Class

Featured On: Mardi Gras, Celebration

Excel Class ships are the largest and newest in the fleet. The ships with Excel Class also have the most amenities and activities on board. Noteworthy amenities include restaurant options, bars, roller coasters, and fun games such as Family Feud. Due to their size these ships may be more crowded and have less of an intimate feel.

Vista Class

Featured On: Vista, Horizon, Panorama

Vista is the second more extravagant Carnival Cruise class. If you’re looking for a more classic Carnival experience, Vista Class is a great option for you. Highlights include SkyCourse and IMAX theaters.

Dream Class

Featured On: Dream, Magic, Breeze

Dream Class ships are very similar to Vista Class ships, although they are slightly smaller in size. Dream Class is great for families and includes amenities such as video arcades, waterparks, mini golf, and a karaoke bar.

Spendor Class

Featured On: Splendor

Larger than the conquest (below), Splendor Class activities include things like casinos, comedy shows, waterparks, multiple pools, and so much more.

Conquest Class

Featured On: Conquest, Glory, Valor, Liberty, Freedom

While Conquest Class ships are slightly smaller they have plenty to offer guests in terms of amenities. They include activities like an adult-only top deck, great restaurants and dining options, and mini golf. If you’re looking to avoid crowds these ships are a great option for you.

Spirit Class

Featured On: Spirit, Pride, Legend, Miracle

If you’re looking for adventure then the spirit class is for you! These ships sail to amazing locations such as Australia, Alaska, and Europe. There are plenty of amenities and activities on board to keep you busy such as spas, pools, waterparks, and the famous SkyCourse.

Sunshine Class

Featured On: Sunshine, Sunrise, Radiance

These are Carnival’s smaller and older ships. Don’t worry, these ships have all undergone various renovations and offer similar amenities to the newer Carnival cruises.

Fantasy Class

Featured On: Ecstasy, Sensation, Elation, Paradise

Fantasy Class ships are the smallest in the Carnival fleet. If you’re looking for a more intimate cruise experience then Fantasy Class is a great option for you. Be aware that there are fewer amenities onboard these ships.

Carnival Cruise Cabins and Suites

Carnival offers several different cabins and suites for cruisers to choose from. These include…

Specialty Suites

Offer: Family Harbor, Cloud 9 Spa, Havana

The specialty suites are the most extravagant on the ship. Depending on the specialty suite you choose, some of the suites cater specifically to families with kids, while others cater to couples, and those wanting more outdoor space. Specific ships offer different specialty suites.

Suites are the most spacious onboard Carnival Cruises. They sleep 5 guests, have their own balconies, and offer a host of amenities. These include things like priority embarkment and disembarkment, priority dinner reservations, complimentary water, pillow-top mattresses, and comfy bathrobes.

Balcony staterooms are a step down from suites and feature their own balconies, which are fantastic for longer cruises with more time at sea.

Ocean view staterooms are larger than interior rooms and include a window. These rooms can accommodate up to 5 people, but only 3 people comfortably. You can request a connecting room for a bit more space.

Interior rooms are the most basic and budget friendly option on Carnival Cruises. Much like ocean view staterooms these rooms can accommodate up to 5 people, but only 3 people comfortably. You can request a connecting room for a bit more space.

What To Consider When Choosing A Ship

Of course destination and budget needs to be taken into consideration when choosing a Carnival Cruise. While many of the cruises contain similar amenities, they may not all be included in certain packages.

If traveling as a family, parents will want to consider places to unwind and relax as well as kids clubs and fun spaces. Solo travelers and singles will want to consider the nightlife and choose a cruise geared more toward entertainment for adults.

Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line, the most popular cruise line in the world.

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line, the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises. In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

"Despite increasing Carnival Cruise Line's capacity by almost 25% since 2019 including transferring three ships from Costa Cruises, guest demand remains incredibly strong so we're leveraging our scale in an even more meaningful way by absorbing an entire brand into the world's most popular cruise line," said Josh Weinstein , chief executive officer of Carnival Corporation & plc. "In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line, which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"P&O Cruises Australia is a storied brand with an amazing team, and we are extremely proud of everything we have accomplished together in Australia and the broader region," said Weinstein. "However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

"We look forward to building on the history and heritage of P&O Cruises Australia by bringing some of our innovations to more cruise guests in the region," said Christine Duffy , president of Carnival Cruise Line. "While we plan to make some technology upgrades and other small changes to the two P&O Cruises Australia ships, they will continue to be geared to the unique Australian market with a familiar feel and much of the same experiences for P&O Cruises Australia guests. The most notable change will be the availability of our popular HubApp, enabling guests to make online dining and excursion reservations, request food and beverage delivery, and chat with other guests, among other features. P&O Cruises Australia guests will also be invited to participate in Carnival's loyalty program and promotional offerings specific to Carnival ships sailing in the region."

"Over the coming months, we will find ways to celebrate and honor P&O Cruises Australia – a valued part of our legacy and an important contributor to the tourism industry in the South Pacific," said Weinstein. "We value the connection our P&O Cruises Australia guests, employees, travel advisor partners, public officials and destinations have with our company and are committed to building on this association moving forward as Carnival."

[EDITOR'S NOTE: This announcement does not impact P&O Cruises (UK), which is a separate Carnival Corporation & plc brand based in England and dedicated to the UK market.]
