21 Tips and Tricks for Cruising on Carnival Valor

Although not quite as new and large in size as Carnival Vista , which is now also home-ported in Galveston, Carnival Valor has many of the same fun-filled features that cruisers know and love.

Carnival Valor view of the sea

1. Try the Sushi

While it’s not the branded Bonsai Sushi as seen on many of the line’s newer ships, the lido deck has a spot called Sushi at Sea. As an express sushi restaurant, you order at a window and take the food away rather than dining at a sit-in restaurant like at Bonsai Sushi. However, it features some of the same menu offerings such as the Bang Bang Bonsai Roll, a spicy tuna roll, sashimi, and more. The cost is à la carte, averaging about $5 per roll.

2. Pack Light

Carnival Valor operates short four and five-night cruises, so it should be easy to pack light. (I say that, of course, as someone who always overpacks.) The real motivating factor to pack light, however, is self-assist debarkation. Carrying your own bags off the ship versus waiting for your zone to be called and then searching for your bag among thousands of others will always be a quicker process, especially while the ship is still cruising out of the Port of Galveston – a port with a reputation for painfully slow debarkation lines.

3. Book the Steakhouse

As of August 20, 2018, Carnival updated its steakhouse menu, adding a significant number of appetizers like bone marrow & hand-cut beef tartare and a crab risotto. New entrées include an A-5 wagyu and a farm-raised honey vinegar chicken dish. And although the cheesecake is no longer listed on the new menu, it is still available to order! The new menu is increasing demand, so book your reservation early.

4. Check Out the Secret Decks

Many of Carnival’s ships, including the Conquest class ships, have “secret decks” at the front that many people don’t realize are accessible. Located just beneath the Captain’s Bridge, these decks offer stunning views to see exactly what’s ahead on the horizon.

5. Grab a ‘Coffee Lovers’ Rewards Card

If you visit the coffee bar, be sure to grab a coffee lovers rewards card to get stamped each time you purchase a coffee or tea. After six drinks purchased, your seventh is free with the rewards card.

6. Order Juevos Rancheros and Arepas at BlueIguana Cantina

If you’ve never had breakfast at BlueIguana Cantina, you’re seriously missing out. And while many people go for the amazing breakfast burritos (be sure to add on the crispy hashbrowns!), the juevos rancheros and the arepas deliver flavor on a whole new level. For those wondering, juevos rancheros is a Mexican dish consisting of a fried egg served on top of a fried tortilla, and at BlueIguana you’ll also get chicken. Arepas are a Venezuelan and Colombian dish and are usually a flat patty made of maize flour and filled with something: at BlueIguana, it’s cheese. Hungry yet?

7. Pre-Purchase the Drink Package

This tip goes for any Carnival cruise, but it seems like many first-time cruisers like to sail on the shorter itineraries on ships like Valor to “test the waters” (pun intended). But if you know you’ll be enjoying a few beverages each day – including some non-alcoholic ones like energy drinks or milkshakes – save a few bucks and pre-purchase the Cheers package.

8. Serenity Serves Sangria

Sangria is the wine lover’s answer to a cold, refreshing drink for a hot day, and Valor’s Serenity Deck serves four different options (technically five, as one is available as with either red or white wine). The bar also features a wide selections of wines, beer, and signature cocktails, including a “Skinny Cocktails” section for the calorie conscious.

9. Don’t Forget the Atrium Bar

The popularity of watering holes like Alchemy Bar, RedFrog Pub, RedFrog Rum Bar, and BlueIguana Tequila Bar sometimes makes them overcrowded and loud. However, oftentimes the atrium bar is clear of the same congestion due to its more secluded location down on deck 3. While it may get busier when large crowds pass through the atrium such as after a theater show or during a big trivia event, in general the atrium bar tends to see lighter traffic in the evening.

10. Get BBQ on Embarkation Day

Carnival Magic BBQ

The Ol’ Fashioned BBQ on Valor is a (complimentary) hidden gem, tucked away on deck 10 directly above the continental buffet on lido. On embarkation day, it’s nearly a ghost town. But after the first sea day, people discover what it is and where it is, and the lines start to grow. The added bonus: Although Valor’s BBQ spot is not a branded Guy Fieri Smokehouse like you’ll find on other ships, Fieri’s range of BBQ sauces are provided for extra flavor.

11. Grab Specialty Coffee on Lido

People swarm to the coffee bar on the promenade deck like bees to honey in the mornings. This can cause really long lines, and with typically only one crew member working the coffee bar the wait gets fairly long. However, there’s also a full-service coffee bar at the aft of lido deck that fewer people know about, meaning shorter lines and a quick caffeine fix.

12. Play Some Trivia

I used to never be one to play the trivia or the games onboard, but the new Hasbro partnership really improved the onboard offerings. For example, I spent an entire hour in the atrium one day just watching others play Trivial Pursuit because the game itself was interesting and the entertainment director made it into a show with how he injected humor and energy into the game.

13. Bring Your Own Straw

When the company announced they were going green and eliminating single-use straws, they were not kidding. The bartenders will still give you a straw if you ask for one, but it seemed like the ship is stocking fewer straws in general. In one instance, I ordered an iced latte at the coffee bar (a drink served in a cup that essentially demands a straw), and the barista apologized that she had run out of straws. (Luckily, I brought my own stainless steel reusable straw from home, bought off Amazon.)

14. Walk the Sports Track

Sure, there’s a fantastic gym onboard with treadmills, but when else can you walk outside with the sea? Enjoy a walk around the sports track on deck 11 to catch some fresh ocean air and stunning sea views.

15. The Spa is Free

While Valor lacks the upgrades of a Cloud 9 spa, it still offers a complimentary sauna and steam rooms. Located inside each of the men’s and women’s locker rooms, they are the perfect, most relaxing way to start or end your day.

16. The Aft Pool is Humid

The aft pool on Valor and other Conquest-class ships, located on deck 9, is enclosed by a second deck (10), which also has a retractable roof. When the roof is closed, the humidity inside the pool area can become almost unbearable. And even when the roof is open, the area can still be humid due to the limited airflow blocked by the second deck. The breezier the day, the less humid the area will be, but keep this in mind if you plan to spend all your time there.

aft pool cruise ship

17. Play Games at the Pub

Many people like to hang out in the library and play board games, but don’t forget that RedFrog Pub has games too, like checkers, bean bag toss (also known as cornhole), and a ring toss game. There’s also a nightly beer pong competition there, making it a much more lively atmosphere for game-play.

18. Mongolian Wok is Worth the Wait

Valor has such an extensive range of options for lunch, but a favorite among cruisers is still the Mongolian Wok. Unfortunately, as a popular spot this means it tends to attract a crowd with a long line, but I have yet to come across anyone who said it wasn’t worth the wait.

19. Pizza Pirate Delivers

Carnival recently started testing a pizza delivery service onboard its ships, and Carnival Valor is one of them. For just a $5 delivery fee, you can order pizza from Pizza Pirate (open 24/7) from anywhere on the ship through the Carnival HUB app, and a crew member will deliver it to you wherever you are.

20. Don’t Miss ‘Groove for St. Jude’

Whether or not you want to join in on the ‘groove’ part, Groove for St. Jude is always one of the best parts of any Carnival cruise. For just a $10 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, you’ll receive a t-shirt and bracelet, plus the good feeling of giving back. Thanks to your donations, St. Jude ensures no family ever receives a bill for the care that children receive at its hospitals.

21. SkyBox Sports Bar Serves Hot Pretzels

Okay, we’ll admit they’re pretty basic ballpark pretzels, but for only $1.25 you can’t beat the ability to order a hot pretzel while watching a sports game on the big screen. It’s almost like you’re at the stadium – but better yet, you’re at sea!

Carnival Valor Tips

  • Post published: May 14, 2023
  • Post category: Cruise Tips
  • Reading time: 9 mins read

The Carnival Valor is one of our favorite Carnival ships because it is a nice size and has a couple of features that some of the newer Carnival ships just don’t.  Those small details plus the fact that it is just easy to get around mean we have enjoyed sailing the Carnival Valor several times.  These are our top tips on how to make the most out of the fun features on board the Carnival Valor!

1. Know the adults only areas

The Aft Pool (the one on the back) is for adults (18 and up) only.  Because the pizza and an ice cream machine is nearby, children can walk around on the deck.  But the pool itself is for adults only.  The crew will come around and have the children leave and go to the main pool.

The Serenity Deck on 11 and 12 forward is 21 and up.  There are a couple of hot tubs on the Serenity Deck and some very plush chairs and loungers.  Be warned – it can get very windy up there!

3. Take the stairs

The Carnival Valor is really a relatively small ship.  Use the stairs – usually where you are going is only up or down a few flights.  It is a great way to get places a little faster than waiting for the elevators.  Plus it always makes me feel better about eating dessert at all three meals!

4. Don’t forget the kid’s pool under the slide!

While there are several adult areas on the ship, there is also a pool just for kids!  The small pool near the slide is a perfect pool for kids to enjoy since they can’t be in the one on the back of the ship!

9. Use the Hub App

The Hub App has a wealth of information.  It has ship maps.  It has menus.  The app shows your bill and how much you owe.  It has the weather, plus the times of sunrise and sunset.  It has general information.  Make sure you download the app in advance and then utilize it while on board!

The Carnival Valor really is a great ship.  Sure it’s not the newest or most shiny, but it is holding up well.  The decks outside decks are convenient, there is a good number of pools for everyone and it’s small size really comes in handy!

Hope these tips make your cruise on the Carnival Valor the best possible!

A secret is to avoid climbing the rails because you might fall off.

A tip is to ask intelligent questions so that you get intelligent responses.

No big secrets for the Valor. Easy to navigate. Only place hidden kind of away is the Steakhouse. Can only access from the back of the ship. She's a lovely ship and I've been on her plenty. I love the seats off the atrium to the side to sit and people watch. Bbq on the level above the lido. Seafood shack is my favorite from all my cruises.

Thank you so much for your insightful response,  I don't know where I would be without contributors such as yourself.

Top Things to Do on Carnival Valor

Planning a cruise on the Carnival Valor? We will give you a sneak peek into all the action on board.

Book Carnival Valor Cruises

One of Carnival’s most popular ships, the Valor is an experience that no cruise enthusiast should miss. On this 2,984-passenger ship, there's plenty to do and eat; you may do as much or as little as you choose. Are you looking for some ideas to help you get started? We've compiled a list of things to do on the Carnival Valor to help you get the most out of your Carnival Valor holiday.

Top 5 Things to do on Carnival Valor

1. blue iguana cantina serves huevos rancheros and arepas.

You will be missing out on a one of a kind experience without breakfast at Blue Iguana Cantina. While many people come for the delicious breakfast burritos (don't forget to order the crispy hashbrowns!), the huevos rancheros and arepas take flavor to new heights. Breakfast at BlueIguana Cantina is considered among the most amazing things to do on Carnival Valor .

For those unfamiliar, huevos ranchero is a Mexican delicacy that consists of a fried egg served on top of a fried tortilla, with the addition of chicken at Blue Iguana. Arepas are a Venezuelan and Colombian delicacy that consists of a flat patty made of maize flour and filled with something, such as cheese at Blue Iguana. Hungry?

2. Indulge in a serene late-day nap

The adults-only two-decker Serenity is a wonderful location to unwind in relative solitude and quiet. This is your go-to place on the shipif you plan to just relax and maybe read a book or sip on a drink.

3. Catch a parade

The Seuss-a-Palooza parade is a blast for everyone. The parade, which is usually held once every sailing on a sea day, allows children (and adults) to dress up, be silly, and engage with Dr. Seuss' most beloved characters, such as the Cat in the Hat, Sam I Am, Thing 1 and Thing 2, among others. Even if you do not have any children, it is not a problem; you'll have almost as much pleasure watching the parade as you will if you participate in it. We're sure you won't be able to keep a smile off your face.

4. Lighten up on the water slide

Sure, you might have to compete with a slew of school-aged kids to reach the top, but what could be more enjoyable than slipping and sliding down a 214-foot curvy water slide? Leave your adulthood at the pier and prepare to be splashed. The waterslide ranks on the top of the Carnival Valor things-to-do list.

5. Join the camp on the cruise

If you are traveling with kids, encourage them to join the camp. Here, along with other activities, they will get a chance to indulge in various activities and learn new things through games. Also, the dedicated art sessions can help them develop a new hobby; you never know.

Parting Thoughts

The list of things to do on Carnival Valor Cruise is not this small; rather, these are some highlights. So, if reading this has peaked your interest, you can visit CruiseBooking.com for more information and book your tickets.

Carnival Valor Itineraries

Carnival valor review, review of carnival valor.

The 2004-built Carnival Valor cruise ship is the third of all 5 Conquest-class Carnival vessels - with sisterships Conquest , Freedom , Glory , Liberty .

The vessel (IMO number 9236389) is currently Panama- flagged (MMSI 354298000) and registered in Colon .

History - construction and ownership

Carnival Cruise Lines (CCL) is a US shipping company, trademarked brand and subsidiary of Carnival Corporation (shipowner). CCL was founded in 1972 as an independent company by Ted Arison (1924-1999, co-founder of NCL Norwegian ).

CCL has the Corporation's largest fleet as number of vessels and GT-tonnage (ship sizes/volumes and passenger capacities). In 2023, CCL had ~9% (by revenue) and ~19% (passengers) share of the cruise industry's worldwide market. In 2024, the parent company (Carnival Corporation) had ~51% stake in the US$64+ billion industry.

Carnival Valor cruise ship

The 3000-passenger ship Carnival Valor and her sisterships are among the biggest in the CCL fleet. They are basically larger versions of earlier Destiny-class ships, as well as more feature-filled. More space reveals into additional decks, with even more bars and lounges, an upscale steak house, and well-proportioned public areas.

Decks and Cabins

Carnival Valor staterooms (1492 total, in 27 grades) include 54 Suites, 521 Balcony, 330 Oceanview and 587 Inside cabins, including 29 wheelchair-accessible (in all cabin categories). The ship has no "family cabins" but instead offers connecting rooms in various categories. Most cabins are sized 170-185 ft2 (16-17 m2). Cabin balconies are sized 35-75 ft2 (5-7 m2). The ship has 3 types of suites - Captain's, Grand, Ocean. The largest are Captain's Suites (500 ft2 / 46 m2 plus 150 ft2 / 14 m2 terrace).

The boat has 13 passenger decks , of which 8 are with cabins. Over 50% of all staterooms are outside, 60% of those are with balconies.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

On Carnival Valor, the two main dining rooms offer traditional dinner with set times and tablemates or flexible dining, via "Your Choice Dining" Carnival program. Washington Restaurant is nicer of the duo. It is located aft and framed by 3 walls of windows. Lincoln is positioned in a central spot, but both offer the same menu. At dinner, the vegetarian and low-carb fare is served, as well as Spa Carnival choices. Cuisine often exceeds expectations, especially at Scarlett’s Supper Club and the sushi station. The casual Rosie’s buffet offers a number of food stations with a variety of choices, including a salad bar, deli, dessert station, daily regional cuisines. The 24-hour room service provides a limited selection of items.

Carnival Valor cruise ship

Carnival Valor emerged from her 16-day dry dock on May 08, 2016 with a host of new restaurants and bars, including upgrades already received by most of the rest vessels in the fleet. In addition to the apothecary-like Alchemy Bar, candy story Cherry on Top, RedFrog Pub and SkyBox Sports Bar, the ship also received poolside RedFrog Rum Bar and BlueIguana Tequila Bar, as well as their complementary eateries, Guy's Burger Joint (which has a tie-in with Food Network superstar Guy Fieri) and BlueIguana Cantina.

Follows the complete list of Carnival Valor restaurants and food bars.

  • Lincoln Restaurant (744-seat forward Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings or “Your Time Dining”; offers “Seuss At Sea” themed breakfasts for $5)
  • Washington Restaurant (1122-seat aft Dining Room, with two fixed dinner seatings and open seating breakfast and lunch)
  • Rosie’s Lido Buffet Restaurant (1396-seat, self-service buffet restaurant with various food stations; operates as a bistro in the evenings)

  • Sushi at Sea (Lido Bar) mini version of Bonsai Sushi, offers a la carte priced menu with rolls, sushi, sashimi, prices vary between USD 1,50-7,50.
  • Alchemy Bar, candy story Cherry on Top, RedFrog Pub, SkyBox Sports Bar, RedFrog Rum Bar, BlueIguana Tequila Bar, Guy's Burger Joint, BlueIguana Cantina.

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

The theme of Valor's decor is "Heroes and Heroism," regarding not just Americans, but heroes from every corner of the world. Cruisers are first represented to the theme as they board through the atrium lobby on Deck 3. To be sure, there is still enough Farcus bling in the details, bright molded gold leaf-gilded eagles on simulated pedestals are scattered all around the liner, as well as coffered ceilings of glossy, reflective materials and plenty of blinking lights and flashing video screens to trigger a 1960's light flashback. Like her Conquest-class sisters, Valor also boasts a 3-deck theater - Ivanhoe, and a series of stores. Carnival Valor offers the typical Carnival experience blended with a handful of twists. The "old faithfuls" are also there: personal service and diverse evening entertainment ranging from Vegas floor show to jazz to the "piano man".

Itineraries

Carnival Valor itinerary program is based on week-long roundtrip cruises departing from Bridgetown and San Juan . Out of Port Canaveral , the ship offers Western Caribbean sailings to Puerto Rico, Mexico, Belize , Roatan , Grand Turk , and the Bahamas.

In 2021, Carnival Valor has scheduled two Transatlantic crossings. Both itineraries are 15-days, one eastbound from Port NOLA New Orleans to Barcelona (January 25 - February 9, visiting Hamilton Bermuda, Funchal Madeira, Malaga, Valencia) and one westbound from Barcelona to NOLA (February 26 - March 13, visiting Cartagena, Malaga, Funchal Madeira; Philipsburg St Maarten, San Juan Puerto Rico). Both Transatlantic cruises were planned because of the 17-day drydock refurb at Navantia Shipyard (in Cadiz Spain ).

Carnival Valor Wiki

Fun Ship 2.0 upgrade was done in 2016. Valor is of Carnival's Conquest-class liners ( Fincantieri Monfalcone -built), with sisterships Conquest ,  Freedom ,  Glory ,  Liberty . The vessel was christened by godmother Katherine Anne "Katie" Couric - US journalist, author at "Yahoo! Global News"). Ship's interior design decoration follows the "Heroes and Heroism" theme (by Joe Farcus).

Due to scheduled drydock refurbishment projects , in September 2020 CCL canceled all planned for 2020 and 2021-Q1 itineraries for 4 ships.

  • Carnival Magic itineraries from Miami Florida were canceled from November 7, 2020, through March 13, 2021 (1st departure).
  • Carnival Paradise itineraries from Tampa Florida were canceled from November 2, 2020, through March 19, 2021 (1st departure).
  • Carnival Valor itineraries (28 total) from NOLA New Orleans were canceled from November 2, 2020, through April 29, 2021 (1st departure), including two Transatlantic crossings - from NOLA (January 25) and from Barcelona (February 26).
  • Carnival Spirit itineraries from Brisbane Australia were canceled from December 6, 2020, through May 16, 2021 (1st departure is on June 12 / repositioning cruise from Singapore to Brisbane).

Carnival Valor refurbishment 2016 review

The list of deckplan changes made during the ship's drydock 2016 refurbishment (April 23 - May 7, done in Freeport Bahamas ) includes:

  • New eateries and poolside bars (by the Fun Ship 2.0 program) were added on Lido Deck 9. These are Guy’s Burger Joint (replacing the Grille /starboard), BlueIguana Cantina (replacing the Grille /portside), RedFrog Rum Bar (pool forward starboard) and BlueIguana Tequila Bar (pool forward portside).
  • On Promenade deck 5 was added the Cherry on Top (candy shop) replacing the Formalities shop. New bars on Deck 5 are SkyBox Sports Bar (replacing Bronx Bar /portside), Alchemy Bar (replacing Jeanne’s wine bar) and RedFrog Pub (taking some space from the Club O2 lounge /portside).

Various technical enhancements were also be implemented, including shoreside power capabilities . Routine maintenance works included new hull coating.

In 2021-Q1 (February-March-April / refurb dates TBA) Carnival Valor will be drydocked at Navantia Shipyard ( Cadiz Spain ), mainly for general maintenance works.

Vessel's first drydock refurbishment  was in 2008 ("Fun Ship 1.0" / "Evolution of Fun"). A new Mongolian Grill was added to the Lido restaurant, and Lido Deck received the huge LED screen for outdoor movies and shows. The second drydock was in 2011 (2-week project).

In 2011 were improved the Serenity (adults-only sundeck), 6 new scenic oceanview rooms and 2 new suites were added. Routine maintenance and some enhancements in the hotel, the public area and lounges were also done. Drydocks 2014-2016 added "Fun Ship 2.0" upgrades - new bars, lounges, new dining and entertainment options.

10 Tips for Solo Cruising with Carnival

Are you searching for an epic solo cruising adventure? You’ve come to the right place! Some folks have more fun traveling with a group, and that’s totally okay. But for those who are looking for a little alone time, those who relish a chance to chart their own course and embrace the spirit of wanderlust with no compromise, now is the perfect time to treat yourself to an adventure with a Carnival cruise vacation.

Carpe that diem and plan a trip that’s all about the most important person in your life: you. Get started below with our complete guide to cruising solo with Carnival.

Our Tips for Solo Cruising

Travel anxiety? Never heard of her! As you begin to plan your Carnival cruise journey, these easy tips are sure to keep the planning stress at bay.

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Expand Your Horizons

When you take a solo Carnival cruise, you step out of your comfort zone and enter a completely new world of possibility. And trust us when we say that stepping out of your comfort zone has never felt so…comfortable! Whether you’re trying new foods, letting yourself wander through unforgettable destinations or kicking back and learning to enjoy your own delightful company, a solo cruise is the perfect way to build your sense of empowerment, confidence and independence, all while having the time of your life.

  • Travel Solo, But Not Alone

This might sound backwards, but just because you’re cruising solo doesn’t mean you have to be alone! From the moment you step onboard a Carnival vacation, you’ll be joined by fellow adventurers from all corners of the world. Don’t let the idea of traveling solo hold you back from meeting new people and making life-long connections. Onboard, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for meeting other travelers, whether you’re striking up a conversation at the RedFrog Rum Bar or teaming up for trivia night. Pro tip: most times, it’s as easy as saying “hello.”

  • Remember: You Control the Pace

When you’re master of your own voyage, you have total freedom to thrive. The itinerary, food, activities—you name it, it’s all up to you. Think less compromising, and more doing whatever strikes your fancy, whenever you want. Follow your own desires and tailor every single moment to your liking— who’s going to stop you? Don’t forget to relax and build some down time into your schedule. Whether you want to chill by the pool or even watch one of our Dive-In Movies at Carnival Seaside Theater™, You won’t want to miss a second of all the sweet relaxation you’re in for!

  • Stay Informed with Plenty of Research

Before you set sail, arm yourself with knowledge about your destination. From local customs to must-visit hotspots, a little research goes a long way in ensuring smooth sailing on your solo adventure! Whether you’re exploring a bustling metropolis or a serene island town, it’s never a bad idea to have a foundational understanding of the traditions, culture, history and etiquette of the place you’re visiting. It’s also a good idea to research your ship’s layout, dining options and entertainment venues before you set off; this will allow you to navigate with ease and get a rough idea of what you want to do, see and experience.

  • Be a Safe & Smart Traveler

Traveling solo means traveling safe and smart! The first step to solo safety is keeping your loved ones in the loop by sharing your itinerary and staying in touch throughout your journey. Provide them with essential details like port and excursion information, and check-in often. Don’t share any sensitive information with strangers and be vigilant about your surroundings! Whether you’re deciding which excursion to join or striking up a conversation with a fellow traveler, don’t forget to trust your instincts and intuition. Your inner compass is there to guide you, and staying in tune with it will allow you to sail on with confidence and peace of mind.

  • Practice Doing Things by Yourself

Cruising alone doesn’t come naturally to all of us, and doing things with just yourself for company can feel a little strange at first. So… why not practice first? Before embarking on your cruise, get used to being by yourself, if you aren’t already an independent adventurer. Treat yourself to a solo spa day, go see a movie, take a cooking class or read in the park; these pre-cruise activities will prepare and empower you for an unforgettable solo trip on the high seas.

  • Make Friends with the Carnival Crew

The friendly faces of Carnival’s staff aren’t just here to make sure you have a great time; they’re also your partners in fun, your guides to the best adventures, and honorary members of every vacation squad. Yes, even yours! Don’t be afraid to strike up a conversation with the service desk attendant, or ask your bartender to show you their best dance move. With irresistible charm and insider tips you won’t find anywhere else, our staff is here to turn your journey into an unforgettable occasion.

  • Sign Up for Shore Excursions

Shore excursions are the perfect way for a solo cruiser to explore a new destination, with none of the stress! Every Carnival destination features unique excursions that cater to every interest you could imagine. AKA, you can lean into the things you love, or explore something new! Cultural excursions can introduce you to the flavors, people, history and art of a region, letting you soak in all that delicious local flavor.

If you want to get your adrenaline-pumping, adventure excursions are guaranteed to leave you with windswept hair and memories that’ll last a lifetime. Best Cruises for Solo Travelers

Like we said before: when you’re cruising solo, the only person you have to please is yourself. That means total freedom of choice! But let’s not get ahead of ourselves— we have to start at the beginning: choosing a destination. Traveling by yourself means the entire map is yours to explore, which is admittedly a lot of pressure. That being said, you know we’re here to help.

You can’t go wrong by setting off on a Carnival cruise vacation in late March-April over Spring Break; whether you’re dreaming of lounging on pristine beaches or exploring faraway regions, Carnival has it all. Whether you’re looking to unwind by the pool, enjoy live music and shows, or try your luck at the casino, there’s never a dull moment on board.

We talked to our destination gurus, and they used their personal experiences and industry knowledge to suggest some of the top destinations and best cruises for solo travelers:

  • Alaska – For nature, adventure and wildlife enthusiasts, there’s no better destination than Alaska. A cruise here will provide more once-in-a-lifetime experiences than you can count, whether you enjoy them on your own or with a group.
  • Canada and New England – Looking for untouched landscapes, delicious seafood and endless scenic views? A Canada and New England itinerary may be just the cruise for you. Did someone say photo op ? This scenic and peaceful corner of the world is also known for being welcoming and safe— perfect for solo cruising.
  • Caribbean and Bahamas – The Caribbean and Bahamas were made for cruising, and offer the quintessential solo cruiser experience. Even better, you can experience Carnival’s private destination islands, including Half Moon Cay and Princess Cays , to enjoy a number of fun activities with other Carnival cruisers! Celebration Key , coming in summer 2025, will have five distinct “portals,” including options for every type of solo traveler! Stay tuned for more info on this Carnival-exclusive destination.
  • Mexico – Home to a friendly local scene and vibrant cultural experiences, Mexico is an ideal spot for solo cruisers to experience. With a number of itineraries available, you can decide whether you want to experience the Pacific charm of the west-coast Riviera or east-coast Caribbean and its island magic.

One last question for you: why settle for an unremarkable spring break when you could have the solo adventure of a lifetime? Just think about it! After you’re done thinking, head over to our booking page (aka, where the magic happens). It’s solo cruise o’clock! Click here to buy your tickets.

Best Carnival cruise ships: Here’s which ship you should sail, based on your travel style

MSN has partnered with The Points Guy for our coverage of credit card products. MSN and The Points Guy may receive a commission from card issuers.

Choosing a Carnival cruise ship is no simple task, especially if you’re new to cruising. As one of the largest cruise brands in the world, Carnival Cruise Line has more than two dozen vessels in its fleet, offering everything from megaship adventures to smaller-ship experiences. Many variables — price, embarkation dates, travel companions, ship size and amenities, and destination — can shape the way you make your choice.

So, what is the best Carnival cruise ship? Here are my picks for the top options in several categories.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG’s cruise newsletter .

Mardi Gras: Best Carnival cruise ship for families

The best Carnival cruise ship for kids is undoubtedly Mardi Gras . Not only is it one of Carnival’s newest vessels, but it’s also one of the largest, and it has tons of activities to keep families with children busy.

At the expansive kids club, daily programming includes scavenger hunts, arts and crafts, and video games. The club draws in young cruisers and gives them space to make friends and play with peers. Beyond the dedicated kids facilities, the ship has a massive arcade and many top-deck diversions. One of these is the Ultimate Playground — a space encompassing a ropes course, waterslides and Bolt, the first-ever roller coaster at sea . (Note that the arcade and Bolt cost extra.)

Related: The 5 best cruise lines for families

Mardi Gras is full of fantastic family-friendly dining, including the line’s Dr. Seuss-themed Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (for a small fee). The ship also includes pizza, soft-serve ice cream, Shaq’s fried chicken and Guy Fieri burgers in its fares. Even the pickiest of eaters will be satisfied. Kids can order off special menus in the complimentary main dining rooms and join in their waiters’ rollicking dance performances just when they start to get antsy sitting still.

The ship also does a nice job of accommodating families of all sizes and budgets. Many of Mardi Gras’ standard cabins sleep at least four people, and the ship offers connecting cabins.

Its Family Harbor staterooms provide access to a special family lounge area with TVs, sitting areas and internet stations. Breakfast is offered there each morning, and snacks and drinks — including free soda — are provided throughout the day. So, you never have to go far when the kids need a snack. Cabins in the Family Harbor category feature a nautical theme, plenty of storage and space to sleep at least four people.

Mardi Gras’ new sister ship, Carnival Celebration, is also a fantastic option in this category, offering a nearly identical experience (with just a few changes in the names and themes of specific venues).

Carnival Horizon: Best ship for luxury lovers

Let’s be clear: Carnival is not a luxury cruise line, nor does it offer huge suites on most ships. The suites it has are smaller than most other brands’ high-end accommodations, and they do not include amenities like butler service.

With that in mind, one ship that offers slightly more exclusive options is Carnival Horizon — the second vessel in Carnival’s three-ship Vista class. It offers a top-deck, adults-only Serenity sun deck area; an extensive menu of spa treatments, salon services and fitness classes at the onboard Cloud 9 Spa; and a handful of upmarket cabin offerings.

If you’re into wellness, relaxation and self-care, check out the spa and fitness center’s manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, teeth whitening treatments, acupuncture, anti-wrinkle procedures, state-of-the-art cycling classes, thermal suite, hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms for a fee. For digs that include pampering, try a Cloud 9 Spa cabin to receive extras like complimentary thermal suite access and two free yoga or Pilates classes.

Related: The 8 best cruise lines for elegance and exclusivity

If exclusive stateroom enclaves are what you seek, you’ll want to book one of the ship’s Havana Cabana cabins. They come in several varieties, from 185-square-foot insides to Havana Suites, which offer 260 square feet of interior space (with a dividing wall to separate sleeping and living areas), plus a 100-square-foot patio area with loungers and a hammock. All Havana Cabana cruisers get access to an exclusive lanai and pool deck. With a suite booking, you’ll also receive priority embarkation and disembarkation.

If a traditional suite is more your style, consider a Grand Suite, which includes priority embarkation, disembarkation and dining times, as well as access to the Havana pool area. Note, however, that Grand Suites run only 345 square feet with 85-square-foot balconies — disappointing when you consider some of Royal Caribbean’s largest rooms are nearly five times that size.

The only ships on which you’ll find larger accommodations are the line’s newest: Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, all of which house Presidential Suites. Those accommodations offer 1,120 square feet of space with 600-square-foot balconies and separate living and sleeping areas. However, the ships — part of the line’s Excel Class — are so large and attract so many families that I’ve ruled them out as the most luxurious.

Carnival Conquest: Best ship for budget travelers

If you’re on a budget and simply looking for one of the cheapest Carnival cruise ships, a solid bet is Carnival Conquest. It offers Bahamas and Caribbean voyages of three to five nights. Think of it this way: The shorter the cruise , the less expensive it will be.

Plus, it sails from Miami, one of the world’s largest cruise hubs. More ships leaving from a specific port means more competition, which can drive prices lower.

Related: The 8 classes of Carnival ships, explained

Carnival Conquest is one of the line’s oldest ships, but it’s also a ton of fun. Because short sailings tend to attract a more lively crowd, passengers can expect lots of dancing, socializing and late nights at Henri’s Dance Club. During the day, passengers enjoy spending time around the pool and grabbing free burgers from Guy’s Burger Joint.

It’s also one of the few vessels left in the fleet that still features jaw-dropping interiors designed by renowned architect Joe Farcus, who made Carnival synonymous with quirky patterns, bright colors and neon lights.

At the time of publication, prices started from $47 per person, per night, for an inside cabin.

Carnival Sunrise: Best Carnival cruise ship for singles

Unfortunately, Carnival has been slow to adopt solo cabins, meaning that no ships in its fleet offer accommodations for one.

Because all staterooms are designed for double occupancy, it’s generally a rule that a person traveling alone must pay both fares. This means they would pay twice as much per person as two people sharing a room.

Related: The best cruise ships for solo travelers

In order to make the single supplement as affordable as possible, solo Carnival cruisers will want to balance finding an inexpensive vessel with choosing one that sails short itineraries. They’ll also probably want one that’s a bit livelier (read: not the oldest in the fleet).

A great contender for the title of best Carnival ship for singles is Carnival Sunrise. Formerly Carnival Triumph, the ship was completely gutted, overhauled and renamed in 2019. Although it originally debuted in 1999, it feels fresh and nearly new. It offers the line’s signature Serenity adults-only sun deck, RedFrog Pub, Alchemy Bar and a slew of lounges, nightclubs and daily activities.

Combine that with short, affordable voyages from Miami, and you can sail to the Bahamas or Caribbean for four or five nights from as little as $104 per night if you’re solo. Short sailings also tend to draw a more fun-loving, social crowd. So, if your goal is to mingle and potentially meet other solo cruisers, you stand a good chance on Carnival Sunrise.

Carnival Pride: Best ship for retirees

Retired travelers have all the time in the world to take longer cruises, which generally allow them to visit more far-flung locales. Those trips can come with a substantial price tag, which is why, as a budget option, Carnival is such a great choice.

In particular, Carnival Pride’s voyages consist of nine- and 12-night itineraries to the Baltic, British Isles and Iceland on a regular cadence. Longer voyages mean more time to explore but also fewer children and less of a frat party vibe. (Take note if you’re thinking of bringing your grandkids.)

Related: The 7 best cruises for seniors who love to travel

Carnival Pride is one of the oldest ships sailing for Carnival. That actually works in its favor if you’re a retiree who enjoys smaller ships and vintage design — in this case, more artwork and decor by Farcus.

In addition to a comedy club and an onboard spa, the ship also offers an adults-only sun deck, several bars and lounges, and plenty of dining options and daily activities to stave off boredom on longer voyages.

Bottom line

So, which Carnival cruise ship is the best? It all depends on your specific preferences. Whether you’re searching for an inexpensive vacation, a family-friendly vessel or a ship that will take you on a longer voyage to Europe, there’s a Carnival cruise to fit your taste and budget.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.
