“This is against the background that Tourism has been positioned as the base for our structural transformation of the economy as indicated in the MW2063 and MIP1. “The 2023 MITE will be held under the theme, We are back! Ipatse Moto! Because indeed we are coming back from all the hardships and effects of the Covid 19 pandemic that barred us from having the expo in the past two years. We are coming back stronger and we will give it our all to make sure Malawi thrives,” she said. She added “As you may know, as a country we have been through the hardest times ever, with cyclones and disease outbreaks. Recently we have just been hit by a devastating cyclone Freddy that has left many people displaced, missing and many feared to be dead. “At this point the nation may be on its knees and many may even wonder why we should be hosting such an expo during this tough time. But certainly this is the right time and we need to do it because we are resilient and we are a strong people. It is the right time to show the world what it means to be Malawian and why we are known as the warm heart of Africa.” The minister said her ministry being in the tourism sector, they want to showcase the potential and opportunities that Malawi has in as as far as tourism is concerned. Said the minister “This is why I spent my time with the team at Music crossroads to see how they can fit into the expo to promote our culture through arts, music story telling.” Kamtukule said, they will not only give a platform to the locals but also host international buyers and international media so as to position Malawi as the preferred tourist destination in the world. She said as part of complementing this, her ministry has come up with an aggressive domestic tourism’s strategy enshrined in the Tourism Master Plan to allow Malawi citizens enjoy the experience of the country is offering in the tourism induy. “It is an anomaly that we the people of Malawi should not experience the parks and the good things this land has to offer,” “Some people ask us why we are inviting all these people to Malawi yet our airports are not that nice and as magnificent as they wished they would be. And my response is, “the children in the home don’t stop eating because their father has lost a job” life must go on and the kids need to eat. We are not inviting the people to see our airports we want the to experience what it means to be Malawian. Why we are the warm heart of Africa and why such a small nation can be so resilient in the face of such challenges,” said Kamtukule. Pikisy of ‘Unamata’ fame, Wikise, Drimo, Kell Kay, Kelvin Silungwe, Kondwani Kachamba Ngwira and Yamikani Nicholas Kachingwe are among people that have been invited to attend event.

The two-day international tourism expo tagged “Takulandirani” brought together tourism operators, experts, DMCs, and local suppliers to transact business at the Bingu Wa International Convention Centre in Lilongwe.

“On this last day of the Expo, I felt it necessary to come and join you in person for one simple reason. I wanted to demonstrate my government’s unwavering commitment and support to the tourism industry in Malawi as a central piece of our ATM Strategy for revolutionizing the three sectors of Agriculture, Tourism, and Mining to boost the productivity of our economy and the prosperity of Malawians,’’ the President said.

The Malawian leader also revealed he has directed Vera Kamtukule, Minister of Tourism, to look at the environment of Malawi to identify both the tourism assets and obstacles hindering its progress in order to create a buoyant tourism sector.

‘’In this respect, I directed the Minister of Tourism, Hon. Vera Kamtukule, to look at the environment of Malawi with a new and critical eye to identify both our tourism assets and the obstacles we must lift this year to turn them into tourist attractions that generate revenue, both from Malawians with disposable incomes and international guests with a taste for beautiful and hospitable countries, of which Malawi is the crown Jewel,’’ President Chakwera added.

“While we as a government are working on creating a conducive environment for tourism to thrive, there is no substitute for the changes and innovations that players in the tourism sector itself have to embrace in order to make the most of the environment we are creating. ‘’

President Chakwera said his government is committed to supporting the growth of the sector being an important enabler of Malawi 2063.

On her part, Vera Kamkutule, Minister of Tourism, said the event exceeded their expectations considering the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on businesses and destinations.

“We were planning for 70 exhibitors to take part in this year’s event considering the break due to Covid-19 challenges, but I am happy to report that instead, we had 115 exhibitors this was one of the success stories in this year’s event. We also had Zimbabwe Ministry of Environmental Affairs, Tourism and Hospitality Management and Tanzania Tourist Board represented,” she revealed.

The Minister, who was full of appreciation for the support from the tourism industry, extolled the resilience of the people of Malawi for showcasing the country’s warmth to the visiting delegates in spite of the multitude of challenges particularly the recent cyclone, which has seen almost 1000 lives lost.

She was optimistic that the various networking session between the international buyers and local tourism service providers shall lead to business partnerships that will transcend into Malawi tourism products being sold on the international markets starting this September 2023 when most tour packages are developed for the 2024 season and beyond.

My first stop was at the pavilion of the awesome Ben Michael Mankhamba – a Malawian musician (guitarist, singer, songwriter, composer and performer). He is also Village Headman Chingalire and owns Chingalire Rural Homestay and Rural Growth Centre just outside Lilongwe City. Mankhamba’s ecotourism facility offers accommodation, activities, workshops and live music. The centre also has a cultural troupe that performs traditional dances that are aimed at promoting and preserving culture.

I was also told that the Malawi Air Force transfers passengers to the island although they didn’t have the exact details of how to access this service.

Rising water levels in Lake Malawi

An official of the Mangochi Tourism Association, a grouping of hotels and lodges in the lake district, lamented the rising water levels in Lake Malawi. Due to increased rainfall this rainy season, rising water has inundated resorts and other facilities along the lakeshore. Some properties are under water while beaches are completely submerged in others.

I had a chat with Sosten Lingwalanya, the deputy director of the Department of Tourism. I inquired about the progress of the implementation of projects under the Malawi Tourism Investment Master Plan and was referred to the Public Private Partnership Commission (PPPC). The PPPC is the sole authority that facilitates the implementation of public-private partnership programmes in Malawi. The commission didn’t respond to my request for this information.

Lingwalanya expressed optimism about the potential that the tourism sector has. He however lamented that some investors do not build properties according to standards that have been laid down by the department. There are many cases where properties are constructed without consideration for standards. When the department refused to grant a license, some property owners try to use politics to influence the process. In some cases, the department has had the last laugh as either those poorly constructed properties do not stand the test of time or tourists do not patronise the facility due to their poor design.

There has also been poor between different government departments, Lingwalanya said. One case in point where poor coordination has been a problem is when the Ministry of Lands allocates land for tourism properties to be constructed in areas that the Department of Tourism does not deem fit for tourism developments.

After the absence of the expo due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the return of the Takulandirani 2023 was an important step in putting Malawi back into the international tourism spotlight. The fact that the event was oversubscribed goes to show how important this platform is to players in the tourism sector. It is also a crucial sector of the economy of Malawi as expressed by the minister of tourism  in her recent public lecture.

Malawi Tourism’s first Takulandirani Tourism Expo since the start of the global Covid19 pandemic ended yesterday evening on a high, with an excellent uptake of exhibitor stalls and reports of a sharp rise in interest in the destination by regional, continental and global buyers who has attended the trade fair.

Notably did Malawi’s President H.E. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera perform the closing ceremony of the international tourism expo, a sign how highly valued the tourism industry has become in the country.

President Lazarus Chakwera to Takulandirani 2023

In his remarks , President Lazarus Chakwera said that the Takulandirani Malawi International Tourism Expo has unveiled growth prospects of the sector in infrastructure, jobs and revenue. Majete reaches new heights in African Parks’ 2023 Annual Report

Tuesday, 18 June 2024

African Parks, responsible for the management of 3 of Malawi’s major national parks and wildlife reserves, have released their latest annual report . Over a series of articles, we are taking a look at the achievements, successes and future plans all three reserves. We began with Liwonde National Park and you can see that article here . Soon we will be taking a look at  Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve but before we do, this article focuses on Majete Wildlife Reserve .

Creating a future for Majete

This year, African Parks celebrated 20 years of operation in Majete Wildlife Reserve. This milestone gave us an opportunity to reflect on the successes and challenges encountered over two decades of reviving the reserve. We wrote an article about it at the time here . While progress has been made, enhancing the resilience of local communities is an ongoing commitment, and managing wildlife within park boundaries to maintain species populations is a constant focus.

With over 12,000 large mammals now in the reserve, Majete’s success extends beyond its borders, supplying over 1,100 animals to help restore other Malawian parks since 2016. Today, Majete has emerged as a pioneer for large-scale wildlife reintroductions and is home to nearly 3,000 relocated animals from 17 species, including black rhino, elephant, lion, giraffe, cheetah and wild dog. To safeguard the park and gather crucial wildlife data, over 40 rangers and wildlife monitors have been employed, 350 km of road network developed and a long-range communication network for wildlife and security tracking implemented. As a result, no rhino or elephant have been poached since their reintroduction, while a 144 km predator-proof fence, maintained by full-time fence technicians, has drastically minimised human-wildlife conflict.

Biodiversity Conservation

Three new giraffe calves were born in 2023, bringing the total population to 30, the largest population in Malawi. The black rhino population also grew, with four healthy calves born – Majete’s third generation of rhino. Twelve wild dog pups were born in May, bringing the population to 23 and prompting a decision to donate five to the Wild Dog Range Expansion Programme. Majete’s lion population is flourishing, with over 70 individuals. To ensure the population doesn’t outgrow the available resources, a decision was made, through consultation with the Malawi Government and species experts, to start a contraception programme to minimise the population growth rate – 11 females have received temporary contraception so far.

Community Development

Human-wildlife incidents dropped to the lowest level in several years. Farmers experiencing challenges from bushpigs and baboons are being supported to find solutions that they can implement themselves.

The C-Quest stove project was rolled out, providing 23,000 fuel-efficient cookstoves to households to reduce the reliance on charcoal in the region.

Over 70,000 indigenous trees were planted in communities as part of a reforestation programme. Overall, 643 people benefitted from enterprise development initiatives, more than double those in 2022. Community beekeepers produced almost four tonnes of honey, up from three tonnes in 2022. Community freelance guides earned US$ 5,805 overall for their guiding services. A total of 117 scholarships were awarded, 102 to secondary school students and 15 to university students. Majete provided seven workplace internships for Malawian students.

Tourism revenue increased by 49% since pre-Covid-19, generating US$ 759,087 for the park and making Majete the most economically successful protected area in Malawi, an achievement recognised by the Malawi Tourism Council. Of the total visitors, over 8,000 were local. To keep up with this visitor demand, two new safari tents were built at Thawale, as well as a new day visitor site in the park.

Park Management & Infrastructure Development

The 144 km predator-proof steel fence was completed after five years, replacing the wooden fence and greatly minimising human-wildlife conflict. Other construction included a dormitory at the Education Campsite for schoolchildren taking part in environmental education programmes, a new kitchen at Thawale, and renovation of several ranger and fence attendant outposts. Some 26 km of new roads were built, to facilitate fire management wildlife monitoring, and 403 km of existing roads were maintained.

Objectives for 2024

  • 10% increase in tourism revenue
  • Build a bush camp at Pende/Pwadzi
  • Produce seven tonnes of wild honey from community beekeepers
  • Trial a community-led conservation initiative outside the park
