Dubrovnik is an Adriatic Sea cruise port and city in Croatia, and one of Europe's historically most prominent and popular vacation travel destinations. The city has population around 43,000 (metro over 66,000). Other major Croatian passenger ports (cruise and ferry) are Split , Zadar , Rijeka , Sibenik .

From Dubrovnik's Port Gruz (translated as "cargo port", locode HRDBV), regularly daily scheduled car and passenger ferries (operated by Jadrolinija) interlink the city with the Elaphites/Elaphiti Islands (Sipan, Lopud, Kolocep) and also with Bari Italy (4x weekly crossings, travel time 7,5 hours).

Medieval Dubrovnik (Ragusa) was founded by the Romans in the 7th-century BC. It was the second-largest independent city-state in the Adriatic Sea (after Venice Italy ). This picturesque town is on the Dalmatian coast and is a major resort vacation destination, best-known for its stone-made double walls and fortifications.

The perfectly preserved Old Town is unique with its steep cobbled streets, marble-paved squares, stone-made churches, palaces, fountains. Among the city's historic buildings are two monasteries, the Rector's Palace, mint house, customs house. However, the most popular tourist attraction are the city walls (visited by over 1,1 million people in 2016) running almost 2 km (1,2 ml) around the city. The walls are 4-6 m (13–20 ft) thick on the landward side, but much thinner on the seaward side. The system of turrets and towers was intended for protection.

The city-state Ragusa was under the protection of the Byzantine Empire (867-1205), the Venetian Republic (until 1358), the Kingdom of Hungary (until 1526) and the Ottoman Empire (until 1806), but remained self-governing as an independent republic. In 1808, Napoleon Bonaparte abolished its city-republic status. Following the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars, in 1815, the Congress of Vienna/Wien ceded the port town to Austria. In 1920, following WW1 (1914-1918), the town became part of Yugoslavia. During WW2 (1939-1945) it was occupied by the Germans and Italians.

The city's average temperatures are 9 C / 48 F (coldest / January) and 25 C / 77 F (warmest / August). The city is served by an international airport, located approx 20 km (12 ml) southeast of downtown. Bus service runs every 10-20 min, and is operated by all 9 bus lines. Bus tickets can be purchased at every newspaper stand, and also in the bus (at higher price).

From Dubrovnik cruise ship tourists can visit Cavtat, Trsteno and Ston.

Dubrovnik cruise port

Dubrovnik handles around 600 cruise ship calls and around 900,000 passengers annually. These numbers rank the cruise port as the Mediterranean's 10th largest (following Barcelona ,  Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Marseille , Naples , Athens-Piraeus , Genoa , and Savona ).

The port is among cruising industry's most regularly visited and unique destinations. Today. the city is at risk of being destroyed by an overwhelming number of tourists. In 2016, the cruise port handled a total of 529 ship calls and nearly 800,000 passengers. The number of calls in 2015 was 475, in 2014 - 463.

  • In 2016, UNESCO sounded the alarm by warning that the city's world heritage status is at risk, highlighting concern about “management of cruise ships” and “the maximum number of tourists in regard to the sustainable carrying capacity of the city”. In August 2016, in one day alone, the city (population around 43,000) was visited by a total of 10,388 cruise tourists. In 2016, the city was visited by over 5 million tourists, which was about 19% of the Mediterranean market.
  • In response, in January 2017, the city launched a plan to limit the number of tourists visiting Old Town to 8,000. Then were installed a total of 116 CCTV cameras to count people entering or leaving the complex. The situation is similar to that in  Venice Italy , where locals regularly protest against cruise ship tourism.

The city's UNESCO status was reviewed due to lack of both tourism strategy (focusing on cruises) and city management plan. Dubrovnik Port Authority is the main negotiator with cruise ship companies. However, there is an intention to let port's management to a foreign concessionaire. All signed for 2019 contracts limit cruise liners to 2 per day, and the number of cruise tourists to 5,000 daily.

Dubrovnik cruise terminal

In February 2016 was announced the concession contract for construction of a new cruise terminal in Dubrovnik.

  • The new facility is operated by "Dubrovnik International Cruise Port Investment" (abbrev DICPI). The company is jointly-owned by Global Port Holdings (GPH, Turkey) and Bouygues Batiment International (France). To allow cruise port operations, the state-owned company Dubrovnik Port Authority, granted a 40-year concession rights to the joint venture company.
  • GPH (world’s largest cruise port operator) handles annually around 5 million passengers in its ports worldwide. GPH operates facilities in such large seaports as Barcelona, Malaga, Lisbon, Valletta, Singapore, also several ports in Turkey.
  • Bouygues Batiment International (subsidiary of Bouygues Construction) was involved in the construction of Kai Tak Cruise Terminal ( Hong Kong China ).

Currently, Port Gruz has 2 quays - one with total length 810 m / 2657 ft (2 berths, completed in 2009, cost EUR 26 million) and another with length 230 m / 755 ft (1 berth, completed in 2011, cost EUR 8 million). The port's new quay has length of 400 m / 1312 ft (1 berth) and will be able to handle even the world's largest cruise vessels of RCI's Oasis-class.

Construction works in Dubrovnik port's Gruz area started in October 2016, with scheduled completion by 2018's end. By the agreement with Dubrovnik Port Authority, DIPCI removed existing buildings and cleared the area to build a modern cruise ship terminal, plus accompanying facilities - shopping mall, commercial multi-story garage (dedicated parking facility) and an international bus terminal (in the port).

The new passenger terminal is located just 3 km (2 ml) from the Old Town. The project's cost is around USD 100 million, financed by several major international and local banks.

Currently, Dubrovnik is also visited as tender port of call, which means additional (also smaller) cruise ships anchor in open sea (usually near Lokrum Island) and their passengers are transported to Port Gruz via the ship's tender boats.

Dubrovnik's local population is very friendly and ready to help cruise travelers find their way around or that special item to bring home with you.

Dubrovnik has withstood a real test of time, with many invaders, conflicts and countries trying to take it over.

Now that they are finally on their own, and Croatia is in the European Union, Dubrovnik is one of the most sought after destinations of Croatia , the Adriatic Sea and cruise ships on itineraries both in the Eastern and Western Mediterranean.

All major cruise lines include Dubrovnik on their Mediterranean itineraries and in particular on cruises departing or ending in Venice.

However, Marella Cruise does fly on Tui directly from Britain to the Dubrovnik's Airport and has a number of cruises starting and ending in Dubrovnik.

Where Ships Dock in Dubrovnik

One of the most wonderful cruise ship ports in Croatia, Dubrovnik is known as the "Pearl of the Adriatic' due to its location on the coast of the Adriatic sea formed by Italy and the Balkans.

However, it must be pointed out that the main Cruise Port in Dubrovnik (Port of Gruž) is around 2 miles (3km) from the Old Town where the top attractions are located, although sometimes cruise ships may also anchor. Find out more about where cruise ships dock  ❯

How to Get Around in Dubrovnik

Unless your cruise ship is anchored and tendering passengers to the Old Port, walking from Port of Gruž is not really the best option.

Good news: Taxis are available right by the gangway as the cruise passenger exits the cruise ship, costing €14.00 (Euros) per car each way. This fares have been updated in 2022.

Buses are available just outside the exit gate of the port - a return transfer to the Old Town costs €4.00 (Euros) per person. Learn More about Transportation in Dubrovnik  ❯

On the news after the breakup of Yugoslavia, when it was attacked by Serbian forces, Dubrovnik made a dramatic comeback after the war in 1991.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

Cruises that visit or depart from Dubrovnik sail in the Mediterranean. Perched on the Dalmatian Coast, this Pearl of the Adriatic is a medieval Mediterranean city known for its Baroque, Gothic and Renaissance architecture. Many tours visit the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and venture up to the ramparts of the city's iconic walls (with portions dating back to the 13th century) for panoramas of its splendid churches, palaces, monasteries and fountains. Dine and shop along Old Town's Stradun, or main street, before a tour of the Franciscan Monastery Museum and the Old Pharmacy, which has been operating since 1317. A filming locale for HBO's hit series "Game of Thrones," Dubrovnik offers plenty of guided tours for those wanting to see the settings of popular scenes shot in the show's fictional town of King's Landing. Other excursions include cable car rides for bird's-eye views and sea-kayaking adventures to the isle of Lokrum and a hidden beach cave.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port Guide: Everything you need to know

Just 3km (1.8m) away from Dubrovnik’s world-renowned Old Town is the Dubrovnik Cruise Port, perched upon the edge of a quaint area of the city known as Gruž.

The Dubrovnik Cruise Port is in a picturesque bay where you can find dozens of charming eateries and shops.

Best of all it’s just a stone-throw away from Dubrovnik’s key sights including the famous Dubrovnik city walls and Lokrum Island.

In this guide, I’m going to delve into everything you need to know about the Dubrovnik Cruise Port including tips on how to make the most of your day in Dubrovnik when visiting from a cruise ship.

Port of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik actually has two ports: a larger port in Gruž (where cruise ships can dock) and a far smaller old port within Dubrovnik’s Old Town itself.

Port of Gruž

Port of Gruz, Dubrovnik Croatia

The main Port of Dubrovnik is located to the west of Dubrovnik city, 3 km from Dubrovnik Old Town within a neighborhood known as Gruž.

Port of Gruž houses Dubrovnik’s cruise port which can be found to the very north of the port, close to the iconic Franjo Tuđman Bridge.

Gruž is a charming neighborhood within the city, consisting of numerous restaurants as well as a daily market that sells an array of fresh produce from fruit to honey.

Cruise passengers to the main Port of Dubrovnik can enjoy striking views of majestic houses surrounded by forests on the other side of the harbor, a reminder of the time when this idyllic neighborhood was a popular summer retreat for the city’s wealthy inhabitants.

Old Town Port

Old Port of Dubrovnik

Nestled within Dubrovnik’s charming and historic Old Town is the picturesque Old Town Port. This port is protected by two breakwaters, one of which is in front of the majestic St. John fortress.

Old Town Port is far smaller than the Port of Gruž and mostly houses small fishing boats.

There are two ferry companies that depart from the Old Town Port which take visitors to a handful of scenic destinations including nearby Lokrum Island and the picturesque town of Cavtat.

Cruise ships used to anchor up outside the Old Town Port but after renovations to the Main Port of Dubrovnik, cruise ships now dock there instead.

In my opinion, Dubrovnik is definitely worth seeing! Dubrovnik was one of the highlights of my visit to Croatia, especially walking atop the city walls.

Can you walk around Dubrovnik?

Dubrovnik Old Town is easy to walk around as it’s relatively compact. On a visit, you can walk the length of the city walls which encompass the Old Town.

The Dubrovnik modern city is quite a bit larger than Dubrovnik’s Old Town and whilst you can walk around the city, you can expect your step count to be high.

What kind of food is Dubrovnik known for?

Dubrovnik is perhaps best known for its grilled fish which are freshly caught off the coast. Other popular local dishes include oysters, stews, and gnocchi. You can also enjoy fresh olive oil and locally-produced wines.

Is Dubrovnik a Tourist Trap?

Dubrovnik is very popular with tourists and prices in the city are more expensive than elsewhere in Croatia so it is easy to see why it can sometimes be described as a tourist trap.

However, in my opinion, Dubrovnik is worth the hype as it is a spectacular city with unique monuments.

You can avoid some of the higher costs by eating outside of the Old Town and opting not to go on tours. It is possible to view the key sights and walk the city walls without a tour guide.

Is Dubrovnik Very Expensive?

Compared to other cities in Croatia and on the Adriatic Coast, Dubrovnik is considered expensive. Prices are more comparable to Western Europe.

To give you an idea of prices, the average hotel price in Dubrovnik is $85 per night and you can expect to spend around $35 per person for a typical meal out.

What is the best month to visit Dubrovnik?

If you’re looking for the best weather then July is the best time to visit Dubrovnik. You will have to contend with crowds at this time of year, however.

May or September provides the best balance between having relatively good weather and having a more peaceful time in Dubrovnik.

Dubrovnik Cruise Port

Final Thoughts on the Dubrovnik Cruise Port

Dubrovnik Cruise Port is in a very convenient location. It’s easy to visit Dubrovnik’s main attractions from the Cruise Port either on foot, by bus, or taxi. It’s especially useful that there is a bus stop and taxi rank so close by.

The Cruise Port itself is in a scenic location, offering beautiful views of the Adriatic coastline, and is just a few minutes away from restaurants and cafés.

Dubrovnik Old Town is a very unique location that I’d recommend adding to your bucket list and is easily viewable in a day. Therefore I think a visit to Dubrovnik via cruise ship is a must!

Cruise ship's docking spots in Dubrovnik

  • Gruz ferry/cruise port :  Gruz port is located about 3 km northwest from the Old Town. Even the biggest cruise ships can dock at this port and it's able to accommodate a few of them at the same time.
  • Ancoring in front of Old Town : If your ship anchor in front of the  Old Town  (next to the island of Lokrum ) a tender boat will take you to the Old harbour – just a few steps away from most Dubrovnik sights . This is the most favorable option since you don't have to worry about your transfer to the Old Town.
  • Ancoring in front of cruise port : If you are visiting Dubrovnik on a busy day (usually during summer months) your ship may anchor in front of new port. In this case tender boat will take you to the port (5 minutes ride).

Considering the number of cruise ships that can visit this port in the  Adriatic  at the same time (on some days even 10) for some cruise ships anchoring and tendering will be inevitable.

Getting from cruiseport to the Old Town

Many cruise companies provide free shuttles from Gruz port to the Old Town . It's 15-minute ride. You will be dropped off right at Pile Gate, the western entrance to the Old Town. When you go outside cruise port area you will find a taxi stand from where you can take a taxi to the Old Town. The ride to Pile Gate will cost you €12.00.

You can take city buses from the stop on main bus station (buses no. 1, 1A, 1B, 3). Tickets can be bought from the nearby kiosk or from the bus driver (can be paid by cash or credit card).

Since the upgrading of the port most ships will now dock instead of being anchored.

Only a very few ships will tender you to the Old harbor, right in the center of town, most others, the bigger ships, will dock at the end of the waterfront marina: the Gruz harbor (2.5 km from the old town) and provide shuttle buses to the Pile Square, from there it is only a few meters to the wall and old Dubrovnik.

Buses: If your ship doesn't offer a shuttle or you'd prefer to take transportation into your own hands, you'll find a local bus stop just outside each of the two the pier gates; look for numbers 1a, 1b and 8. 1,60 Euro one way. These buses can get very busy at times with school children etc. However, they have a better frequency than the cruise organized shuttles. The bus trip takes about 10 minutes.

Plenty taxis around at the Dubrovnik Cruise Terminal. 13 euros (set price and no need to change money) each way per taxi. If you travel with 2 or more people this often a good deal, as you avoid the busy lines when the shuttle buses return to port.

Sightseeing:

The old town is completely pedestrianized and easily small enough to get around on foot - some of the side streets are a little steep though!

Walk on the walls around the old town, great views! Warning - it's recommended to visit the walls during the early morning hours or the late afternoon hours, as it can become hot during the day! There are 3 entrances to the City Walls: on Stradun by the Pile gate, by fort Saint John's and at the Custom's House gate. Open:8AM-7PM. Entrance fee:150 KN (20 Euro) adults.

The Museum of Modern Art : Located near Banja's Beach, this museum welcomes you in from the sun to admire pieces by Vlaho Bukovac and other Croatian artists.

At the Pile Square you have a nice view of the harbor; from there you can stroll down the ramps into the old city.

The tourist office is at the point where the shuttle buses and taxis will drop you off.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Walking: You can get around by foot, mostly. There's really no reason to rent a car as the old city is pedestrian-only.

In the Old City, the Placa Stradun is the main pedestrian boulevard. You can access everything from the Placa. This is a walking destination and the smooth marble streets of the old town can be slick, particularly if it rains. Wear comfortable shoes. Remember this town is very compact, before you know it you are on the other side of town. The Placa is only 600 meters long and the old harbor is only 300 meters away.

Excursion boats: These boats depart for various excursions from the pier of the old harbor (at the end of the Placa) and are a good value. 12 Euro for a 50-minute trip is the going rate. The nearby islands you will pass, have various nudist beaches, so don't be in for a shock. It is part of the Croatian way of life.

Ride the cable car for stunning views. About 19 euro round trip. The cable car has been completely renovated after the damage from the Balkan war and is now also accessible for the mobility impaired. However to get to the cable car you will have to negotiate many steps, in this case, use a taxi or a bus. Bus 8 from the cruise terminal makes a stop at the cable car.

You can also consider a panoramic taxi tour (1 hour costs 50 Euro per taxi). These tours start straight from the cruise terminal. A nice trip which will take you to the same spot where the cable car ends. Most drivers speak good English. They will drop you off at the old city or at the cruise terminal whatever you wish.

It pays to compare your cruise line tours here

Nearby Places:

Banje Beach, (in the vicinity of the Old Town.). A well-located pebble beach. There's a concession part with an entrance fee, but also a public part which is always livelier and more relaxed. Great way to beat the heat in the middle of the town. Amazing view to City walls, Old Town Dubrovnik and the island of Lokrum. Beach volleyball, mini football or water polo. You can also enjoy lying on a deck chair and have a drink.

Shopping and Food

The main shopping street is Placa Stradun, but some of the best shops you can find in the in the small and steep streets around the Stradun.

Typical Dubrovnik products are: Konavle embroidery, silver, and gold jewelry, and wine from the Dubrovnik cellars.

The port itself is full of souvenir stands. There are no duty-free stores in port.

The exception to this is the walk around the walls but you can pay by credit card at the office near the Pile Gate. Credit cards are widely accepted even at souvenirs stands and food stores.

Currency Converter

Communication:

Language: Croatian. English well spoken.

There are quite a few cafes which offer wifi, some charge extra even when you order a drink. Some do not, inquire first.

The charge for wifi in port in the crew center is 5 euro for 3 hours or 10 minutes for 1 euro if you want to use an internet station. No other tariffs are available.

Opening Hours and Holidays:

Banks and post offices are generally open from 7AM to 7PM without breaks, and public offices from Monday to Friday from 8AM to 4PM. During the tourist season, post offices are generally open until 9PM, including Saturdays.

Shops and department stores are open from 8AM to 8PM without breaks.

Since 2009 shopping hours are not regulated anymore, therefore, most stores in tourist destinations are open 7 days a week.

Dubrovnik, Croatia Cruise Port Guide

The ancient walled city of Dubrovnik basks on the coast of southern Croatia, surrounded on three sides by the sparkling Adriatic Sea. The entire Old Town is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and when you visit as part of your Dubrovnik cruise, you’ll see why. You’ll feel like you’re stepping into an exquisite living museum of stone palaces, ornate churches, and ancient mansions.

You’ll have a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque splendor. Wander along the Stradun, a stately stone boulevard. Peek into grand palaces, and stroll chunky ramparts, taking in the jumble of terracotta rooftops below you. Enjoy the beautiful outdoors on a kayak trip around the towering walls. Ride the cable car up Srd Hill for stupendous views, or head across to sleepy Lokrum Island to swim off the rocks in the crystal clear sea. On a Europe cruise to Dubrovnik, you’ll be charmed by this remarkable city.

Top sights & attractions for cruises to dubrovnik, the old city walls.

Dubrovnik is encircled by medieval ramparts connected by a series of towers. Strolling this vast wall gives you dramatic views down over the rooftops of the town and out to the glittering Adriatic beyond. You’ll also have a great view of the imposing Fort Lovrijenac, perched on a rocky headland next to the old city. After your walk, find your way through a tiny passageway to Buza, a rustic bar clinging to the rocks beneath the massive walls, for cold drinks and a chance to jump into the sea.

Franciscan Church and Monastery

This Gothic church was built in 1225 as the highest point of the city walls, and is one of the oldest structures in Dubrovnik. Climb to the top for yet another incredible lookout point over the city’s harbor. More than just a monastery, be sure to stop inside the oldest pharmacy in Europe and the museum library located within.

The Rector’s Palace and Cultural Historical Museum

This late 15th-century Gothic-Renaissance palace is where the rector of the city, who governed Dubrovnik, would live. Each rector was confined to the palace for a period of one month. Today, the palace serves as the Cultural History Museum. A collection of some 20,000 items including coins, statues, coats of arms, weapons, photographs, and textiles chart the history of the city from the 14th to the 20th centuries.

Things to Do in Dubrovnik

Stroll along historic stradun.

Stradun is the wide, elegant boulevard that bisects the Old Town of Dubrovnik, connecting the Pile and Ploce Gates, its smooth limestone gleaming in the sunlight. At one end is Onofrio’s Great Fountain, which has supplied spring water to the city since the 13th century. Stradun is lined with magnificent palaces, shops, and restaurants. Explore some of the shaded side alleys to find the most authentic places, and as part of your walk, visit the Franciscan Monastery and St. Blaise Church.

Take a Quick Cable Car Ride to the Top of Srd Hill

A cable-car ride takes you nearly half a mile up to the top of Srd Hill in mere minutes. You can take the cable car back down or take a 30-minute hike back down into Old Town. This view is especially beautiful, because you can see more of the southern Dalmatian coast than nearly anywhere else in Dubrovnik.

Take a Ferry to the Island of Lokrum

If you find yourself with extra time in Croatia, reserve a spot on a ferry ride to Lokrum, where you’ll trade in your tours for an relaxed, unhurried afternoon on this island in the Adriatic Sea. The island is inhabited by a massive population of peacocks. While you’re there, sunbathe or swim, enjoying the peace and quiet of this car-free, unpopulated island.

Top Food & Drink in Dubrovnik

You’ll find plenty of establishments serving authentic Croatian cuisine on your Dubrovnik cruise. At the most simple level, order a platter of Dalmatian ham and the salty local cheese and enjoy it with a crisp Pošip white from the island of Korcula. This makes an excellent lunch. You could also try the local specialty, a velvety squid ink risotto, which is jet black (check your teeth after eating this as your smile can be alarming for a few moments).

Pašticada is marinated, herb-stuffed beef, slow-cooked and served with pasta or gnocchi; you will find a lot of pasta on menus as Italy is not far away. Fresh fish is available everywhere, too, from sea bass and tuna to fresh oysters from the nearby town of Ston. Save space for dessert—look out for delicious dishes such as orange and olive cake, flaky apple or cherry strudel, and the ubiquitous gelato.

Culture & History of Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik was established in the 7th century as Ragusa, an independent republic that rivaled Venice for its riches. Dubrovnik was brought under the umbrella of the Byzantine Empire during the 12th century, and later was occupied by the Venetians, who completed construction on parts of the Old Town that stand to this day. In 1667, the city was devastated by an earthquake and lost much of its power. Unable to fight off the French invasion by Napoleon, Dubrovnik fell to the French and was bundled into Austria-Hungary in 1815.

The city became part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after WWII, a period that ended after the 1991-1995 Balkans conflict, which resulted in the breakup of Yugoslavia. The city suffered significant shelling during a seven-month siege in 1991; many of the houses you see today have new roofs following the war.

Today, the city enjoys spectacular success as both a tourist destination and a film location. Despite the fact that they are massively outnumbered by visitors in summer, locals are friendly and welcoming. During your visit, try to embrace fjaka , a Croatian concept of doing very little in a pleasurable way and living in the moment.

Dubrovnik Port Facilities & Location

At Dubrovnik, you’ll likely dock at the port of Gruz, which is just two miles north of the town’s center. Shuttles are available to take you into Old Town, or you can hail a taxi from the pier. The bus station can also be found walking distance from Gruz. All ferries depart from Gruz harbor. Some cruise lines will take you to Old Town from small boats, which feels like a step back in time as you approach and enter the city’s fortified walls.

Transportation in Dubrovnik

Within the city walls, the only way to get around is on foot, as almost the entire area is car-free. Transportation options to head further afield includes public buses that run to and from Gruz Port, where ships dock, or taxi, of which there are many. Ferries to Lokrum depart from the Old Town Port, and the cable car to Mount Srd is just inland of the Old Town, around 10 minutes’ walk from the Pile or Ploče Gates.

Shopping in Dubrovnik

There’s no shortage of shops in Dubrovnik. Things to buy include traditional Konavle jewelry, Croatian wines, products made from local lavender, silk ties, and locally made footwear. Entire shops are dedicated to merchandise related to the many movies and TV shows shot here. For something more authentic, visit the Pharmacy in the Franciscan Church, where the products are hand made; the delicate orange blossom face cream, for example, is exquisite.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Croatia is the Kuna (HRK), although you will see prices in Euros as well. It’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the exchange rate before going shopping. Most places accept credit cards, although you will need cash for shopping in markets. There are plenty of ATMs in the city.

There is a tipping culture in Croatia, but not a big one. Tip 10% for good service in a restaurant, and the equivalent of 5 or 10 Euros to a good tour guide.

All About Dubrovnik Cruise Port

cruise ship parked in Dubrovnik cruise port at night

The Croatian city of Dubrovnik is one of the most popular cruise attractions in both the Mediterranean and the world.

Many big cruise liners such as Holland America Line, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, MSC Cruises, and many more bring many passengers to the Dubrovnik cruise port each year.

Table of Contents

In 2018, 440 cruise ships made it to the port, carrying around 750,000 passengers. That made the Dubrovnik cruise port the third most active one in the Mediterranean Sea and the tenth in the whole world.

Over the years, the Dubrovnik cruise port has become a household name in the Eastern Mediterranean, on par with the greatest cruise stops such as Venice, Athens, and Greek Isles.

The experience of being on a cruise ship on your way to Dubrovnik is a priceless one in itself. In case you haven’t made any accommodations before getting on the ship, then worry not! Because you’ll be met a plethora of apartments and rooms just a few minutes from the port, alongside two great hotels: Hotel Petka and Hotel Berkeley .

Is Dubrovnik a Tender Port?

There are two possible docking spots for a cruise ship in Dubrovnik.

One, it’ll anchor just in front of the Old Town, next to  Lokrum island . In this case, a tender boat will take you to the old harbor, which is a walk away from the city center.

Cruise ship being visible from the walls of the old city, anchored near the Lokrum island

Two, if you happen to be visiting the city in the busy summer season, where sometimes up to 10 different cruise ships show up on the same day, then you’ll most likely dock in Gruz Port. Once there, a pretty quick tender boat ride will take you to the actual port, which is located 3km northwest of the Old Town. If you haven’t guessed yet, this is the least favorable outcome of the two. However, it’s not that much of an annoyance or a dealbreaker per se.

aerial view of the Gruz cruise port

It’s really hard to predict how it’ll end up for you since it all depends on the size of the cruise ship and the traffic, amongst other things. However, as we said, it’s not that big of a difference, and it will surely not affect the amazing time that you’re going to have in Dubrovnik.

What Days Do Cruise Ships Dock in Dubrovnik?

The Cruise season usually starts in March and ends in late November, with its height generally lasting from May to October.

During this period, we might see some days where there are no cruise ships in sight. However, most of the time, we see anywhere from 100 to 9000 people descending upon the city.

The majority of the ships set anchor between 6 and 8 in the morning, but sometimes we get “late” 2 PM arrivals.

Which is more than enough to book a private sunset boat tour with someone dear to you. Book Now!

How Far Is Dubrovnik Port from Old Town?

Getting to Old Town from the Dubrovnik cruise port is pretty easy and straightforward. For one, numerous cruise companies provide 15-minute free rides from Gruz Port to the Old Town, more specifically, Pile Gate, the western entrance.

However, if your cruise company doesn’t offer any, then you’ll have to take a taxi right outside the port to Pile Gate, which will cost you around €15.

You can also take the public city buses from the main bus station, and you’re going to be looking for buses number 1, 1A, 1B, and 3. You can always look up more information about the city’s public transportation .

Things to Do Once You’re in Dubrovnik

First and foremost, stroll along the city’s walls and thank us later. You’ll be greeted with an unforgettable view of the Old Town from an elevated position and numerous great angles for taking photos.

Afterwards, get thru a hole in the city walls and find some of the best beaches in Dubrovnik .

Moreover, you can take a cable car which will take you to the top of Mt. Srdj. While this cable car ride only lasts 3 minutes, you’ll still get some incredible views of the city of the Old Town and the numerous islands that encircle the city.

We highly recommend that you take advantage of the numerous organized city tours that are usually at the offer. There are tours of the city, of the surrounding area (Konavle, Peljesac region, etc.), and sea-kayaking tours, just to mention a few.

Explore Dubrovnik with our romantic sunset boat tour . Immerse yourself in the rich history of the city. Book Now!

You should also try some of the incredibly delicious local meals that you can get your hands on in most restaurants and taverns around the city. To no one’s surprise, the food is mainly based around seafood with the inclusion of some greenery, which is supplied from the surrounding agricultural areas of the city.

Finally, it would be best if you got your hands on some of that local wine, it’s something legendary, to say the least. And of course, make sure to grab some local products such as paintings, lavender, olive oil, sweet delicacies, and more. These will help remind you of your already unforgettable visit to the city of Dubrovnik. We hope to see you there soon!

Cruise ship docking in Dubrovnik cruise port

Dubrovnik’s main cruise port is located in Gruž / Kanatfig area (see below map) about 3 km away from the Old town . Most of the cruise ships dock there although some cruise ships dock in front of the Town’s Old Port from where visitors are ferried by tender to the shore. If you are visiting Dubrovnik by a cruise ship just for a few hours, here is an article what to do and how to spend just a few hours in Dubrovnik .

We will be on the Sept 29 Solstice cruise out of Barcelona and was wondering if Celebrity provides shuttle transportation from the port in Dubrovnik to Pile Gate. Thanks

There was a shuttle when we did this cruise in July. They sold tickets onboard the ship, and it was an easy way to get to the city wall. Just be sure to bring your ID with you! There were police officers boarding the busses and checking each person's identification. People had to get off of the bus and walk back to the ship if they didn't have it! We used our driver licenses. Dubrovnik was my favorite stop...enjoy!

We were in Dubrovnik just over a week ago, and they did check you had picture ID on the buses. Our shuttle with Azamara was free, but the bus area near the town is very small, very crowded, and very chaotic when there are a number of ships in . We used our bus passes, but any official form of ID with your picture included on it would suffice. It was also very hot, so take precautions with oil, hats etc too.

Despite all this, if you have never been, it is a must see trip. ! :)

Does anyone know if it is easy to get to Pile gate without using the shuttle bus options?

Taxi would be an option, and also there is a city bus if you have local currency, but it is much too far to walk.

Having been there in wonderful Dubrovnik on June 16 while sailing the Solstice, we used one of the many, many cabs that were there and available for our connection to the Pile Gate. The posted rate for your cab group would be ten euro.

The four of us got a cab when coming off of the ship and for 50 euro got BOTH a panoramic tour across the new bridge, up to several super scenic spots on the mountains above town, learned more on the early 1990's war there, etc. Then we were dropped at the main gate. We didn't need to do the Cable Car as we got to see the view from with our introductory cab ride around town. The cab ride for the four us from Pile Gate was ten euro.

You can go this posting to see lots more details for what we did in Dubrovnik, many pictures, etc. Also, check out our full live/blog report on our entire cruise, details on the Solstice, its food, etc.

THANKS! Enjoy! Terry in Ohio

Recently back from a June 7-19 Solstice cruise from Barcelona that had stops in Villefranche, ports near Pisa and Rome, Naples, Kotor, Venice and Dubrovnik . Enjoyed great weather and a wonderful trip. Dozens of wonderful visuals with key highlights, tips, comments, etc., on these postings. We are now at 30,483 views for this live/blog re-cap on our first sailing with Celebrity and much on wonderful Barcelona. Check these postings and added info at:

We started with a local cab driver who gave us a “panoramic tour”, including crossing this unique bridge near the main cruise ship docking area. He called this bridge their “Golden Gate” like in San Francisco. It is nine years old. You can see the Solstice docked to the right side and other newer housing around this bay NW of the historic walled city.:

Then we drove up and up through narrow twisting roads to the high point overlooking Dubrovnik and near the cable car high station. From this point, we could also see part of Bosnia and and Montenegro. The “super star” view was down below with this angle of the harbor and walled city. Beautiful!!!:

This is Dubrovnik’s Pile Gate as the grand western entrance to the walled city.:

I've read postings in the past from some who walked it but it is not close, roughly 2.5 miles. Even if you enjoy very long walks you'd be better to take the shuttle or a cab and save your walking for the old town. Personally I'd either take the shuttle, or take a taxi and have them do a short tour of the area (an hour or so) which ends at the top of the gondola. Then you can buy a one way fare on the Gondola down to the old town and enter from one of northern gates (two are a short distance from the Gondola station).

Our our cruise last fall Celebrity's shuttle service was $10/pp. Times and lines were OK.

This June the cost for the Celebrity shuttle was $12 per person for all day transportation to/from the Pile Gate.

I believe a taxi to for a one-way trip is 10 euros. The prices are fixed and there was a sign at the port stating the rates. So if you have a few people in your group, a taxi would be cheaper unless you plan to make more than one round trip during the day.

thanks for the great info and suggestions. is there any need to get kunas? it sounds like euros are widely accepted. we were there in 2004 and they only wanted their own currency.

excitedofharpenden

excitedofharpenden

They do accept euros at most places, but on the advice of someone on the ports board who lives in Croatia I took kunas with me. It was easy to pay the 80 kuna return cable car ride. I've got some kunas left. It's a perfect excuse to go back:) I love Dubrovnik.

We arrived by Jadrolina ferry and just took the bus up to the gate. We bought our tickets in the little store on the traffic island between the taxi rank and where the busses were. . As I recall, there were a few local bus routes that went by the gate. We took the bus because there was such a long line for taxis at that particular time. We had kunas because we had spent a few weeks in Croatia but we always use the currency of the country that we are in. The city can be a zoo when the cruise ships are in. Try and stay in town as late as possible as the pedestrian traffic really thins out as the afternoon/evening progresses. We found it to be almost a different city at night and in the early morning.

Thank you all for the great information. We have got about £40 of kunas to take with us which will be enough to start the day off!

craftymom914

I agree with TLCOhio (we Ohioans think alike).....when we were in Dubrovnik we took a cab (4 of us) and gave us a great tour of the higher places in the area. Amazing views and a great a sense of the history. If, however, you want to walk the wall you may want to take a can right to the old city and do that first - before it gets too crowded and too hot.

Glad to hear from our smart/wise Ohio neighbor in Cleveland. YES, walking the walk is wonderful in Dubrovnik. We had time to do the panoramic cab ride, have a nice lunch, walk the wall, see various shops, etc., etc. We were, however, lucky on June 16 as our cruise ship was the only one in port that day and it was a mild 70's weather day. When crowded and super hot, I can appreciate the challenge in being there under those more difficult conditions.

Below are a couple of wall walking pictures. That experience was one of the best during our entire cruise. Don't miss doing that wall walk in Dubrovnik!! It's very unique and special, as was being at the "TOP" overlooking this spectacular city.

From the walled walk, this shows one of the domed tower going up to one of the main corner towers at the highest point for wall surrounding the town. Plus, another visual from that wonderful walk showing how the wall faces the Adriatic Sea.:

We found we needed no kunas. Everyone took Euros except the cable car gondola and they took charge cards.

Agree with Larry. That was our Dubrovnik experience. No need to get kunas. The wall walk won't take euros, but the credit card worked fine there.

Getting a cab to take you on a tour of the area above the town would be great. We had a car for two days and travelled south. The roads above Dubrovnic will provide some great views.

They took Euros from us on the wall walk in 2007 and again in 2010

Will the cab drivers accept only krona or credit cards??

Many of the shops accept Euro however we found the prices to be better when paying in Kuna.

The ships shuttle was $12pp last October. It ran very frequently.

dln929

It most certainly is not! It's a nice 45 minute stroll past some spectacular cliffside scenery. We rea l l y l iked walking into town. No problem at all.

1,000+ Club

So USD12 p.p. for a ship's shuttle or EUR 10 or 12 for a private taxi that would take 4 people. I wonder which option we will use. Not!

Why are cruise lines that stupid? Do they deliberately price themselves in an uncompetative way?

Same goes for shore excursions. 10, 15 years ago they did have their passengers pretty much by the short and curlies. It was difficult and time consumingbtonresearch other tour options for ports. Now, a few key strokes on the computer and the internet will let you see what else is available and at what price.

I am sure that passengers would be happy to pay a premium of, say, 25% to use ship's tour services over being bothered to research their own excursions.

In 2011 payment for the walls and the marine museum had to be in Kunas or by card. Shops and restaurants in the town would take Euros, however, though not at a very good exchange rate.

Hi, is that $12 per journey or for the day?

Thanks, Rick.

Most definitely a charge - can't quite remember if it was $12 or $15 per person.

Just checked and last September it was $12 per person.

Lovemychoos

We have just come home from Constellation, and the shuttle was $12/return per person. However, you can get a taxi for a fixed price of 13euro (each way), which is what we did, as there were four of us. Totally avoided the normal 'scrum' for the shuttle buses back to the ship. We are so glad we did, as there were 6 ships in port when we were there

Thanks everyone, thats very helpful - as there are 3 of us, think we will take a taxi. Can you tell me if its easy to get a taxi back to the ship and where they leave from.

25+ Club

Charge of $12.00

There are loads of taxis just before the place you get the shuttle back - you won't have any problem :-) xx

late2cruisin

There's also a city bus that stops not too far from where the ship docks and takes you to the main gate of the old town. Runs day and night. Cheap. :D

we always use this

costs about 1 to 2 euro's

the stop is next to the port gate, buy tickets on the bus ( slightly more) or the kiosk next to the bus stop.

return bus is where you get off at the main gate to the walled city ( same as the ships bus)

One year we walked off the ship and there was a massive queue of people waiting for taxi's and the shuttle without shelter heat, there was alot of upset passengers at the time.

we walked past, out the gate and stepped onto the local bus, 10 minutes later we were walking into the old town.

Be brave and DIY :)

Always google everything before you go and study the google maps for your port stops.

Been to Dubrovnik once.

Taxi from the ship was easy- it was right outside. Driver tried to talk us into a taking a tour but we refused. We only wanted to go to the city center.

Taking a taxi back was more difficult. Our group was second in line, and there were no taxis. We waited around for bit and one showed up for the first group. He refused to accept the posted rate and insisted on being paid more. Stated there was a lot of traffic. The first group wasn't happy, but accepted the fare hike as it was getting late.

Next taxi came to get us several minutes later and the driver did not try to hike the price on us. There was traffic (the first guy wasn't lying). We also saw a lot of passengers waiting for the bus transfer from the cruiseline. I'm sure they had to wait a long time due to the traffic.

My advise is to leave the ship early and try to come back early if you are doing taxis. Also if you are going to climb the walls they only take their own currency or VISA- no Euros. I paid with my VISA card. No problems there. Shops and restaurants will take Euros.

50+ Club

You can walk back to the ship in about 30 minutes. Buses run frequently too and are very cheap.

Many thanks to you all for your help, much appreciated! x

40,000+ Club

Since our good friend (Dubrovniklady) is sleeping today (she hasn't posted on this thread) we will summarize. You have lots of options between the port and the gates of the city. One can walk (a fast walker can do it in 30min...but for many it would be closer to 45 min), take the port shuttle bus provided for your cruise ship, walk out of the port and simply take the local buses (you can buy discounted local bus tickets at some of the small shops across the street), or you could negotiate a fare with a taxi (they like to overcharge cruisers). Or, like one guy on our recent cruise, you could bring your bike on the cruise and just peddle into town (actually faster then the buses).

Since nobody has mentioned it yet, I thought I'd throw this in: If you buy the "Dubrovnik card", it includes free transportation on city buses. We bought the 1 day card (it also comes in 3 and 7 day versions). If you're planning on walking the walls of the old city, the fort, the Rector's palace...you're already ahead by buying the card vs. individual admission fees. There are a bunch of other museums included too (if you have the time!) And a nice, colorful tourist guide of the sights and history of the city. We bought the card at a hotel near the docks so we could start using the bus for free right away. (They accepted credit cards; not all the places that sell it do). The 24-hour period starts when you first use the card, so we were able to go into town, walk the wall and see the museums, go back to the ship, go back into town at night (it's all lit up and much less crowded), then go back the next morning and see the Fort and another museum. I'd say we got our money's worth...:)

Affordable Island-Hopping in Croatia? What Could Go Wrong?

A 30-percent-off Black Friday sale on a cruise aboard a yacht meant off-season sailing and being prepared for the unexpected.

A view from a hill of a red-roofed town surrounding a harbor. In the foreground, the ruins of an ancient fortification wall follow the downward slope of a steep hill. And in the distance, beyond the harbor with its numerous small boats, is a string of small green islands.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

As Croatians tell the story , the Greek hero Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive on the Croatian island of Mljet. Visiting in May, I and six other sailors embraced the myth when the motor on our 54-foot yacht failed.

“Remember, Odysseus spent seven years on Mljet,” said Ivan Ljubovic, our captain. “We can do two nights.”

In the scheme of things, the clogged fuel filter that impeded our progress on a seven-night, island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik on a yacht — which the passengers helped sail — was minor. Though an engine, even on a sailboat, is vital for docking and sticking to schedules on becalmed days, most of my shipmates agreed that getting waylaid in a village with Roman ruins on a turquoise bay was an acceptable fate.

I had been resigned to what were, in my mind, worse inconveniences when I had signed up for the trip last November. Then, the tour operator G Adventures had put several trips on sale over the Black Friday weekend. Its best deals were in the off-season, which meant potentially chilly weather and closed restaurants and attractions. But leaving in late April for seven nights of island hopping at roughly $1,300 — after a 30 percent discount — was too tempting to pass up.

My cousin Kim agreed and we made plans to pack rain gear and meet in Split to test the budget waters.

‘Everything between is an adventure’

Little about the itinerary was published pre-departure and none of it was firm.

“Split and Dubrovnik are fixed,” said the captain, who would pilot the ship solo and double as our guide, on our first day. “Everything between is an adventure.”

It started with the Sauturnes, a handsome Kufner yacht with four snug guest cabins, four economical bathrooms where the retractable faucet doubled as a shower spigot, and a spacious galley. Our “crew,” a mix of Australians and Americans ranging from 18 to 75 — all of whom had also jumped on the promotional pricing — spent most of the time atop the boat, where foam mattresses invited sunbathing and a cockpit awning provided shade.

The weather, which turned out to be sunny and comfortably cool, was not our greatest concern. The G Adventures website had mentioned well-known islands, including beachy Brac and Vis , which played a convincing Greek idyll in the movie “Mamma Mia 2.” But since many places would be closed in the shoulder season, we would proceed, according to the captain, based on the dictates of the weather and conditions on shore.

Meals were not included, which meant finding open restaurants was critical. For shipboard breakfasts and lunches, we each chipped in 50 euros (about $54) for communal groceries, which we shopped for at local markets. At night, we would dine at restaurants; G Adventures advised budgeting $250 to $325 for the week, which was accurate, though we often splurged on Croatian wine (a carafe of house red averaged $15).

Small ports

After the frenzy of grocery shopping and moving into the bunk-bedded cabin Kim and I shared, we experienced the Zen of sailing as the ship set off on a sunny morning for 43-mile-long Hvar , the longest and purportedly sunniest island in Croatia.

Neighboring islands drifted past as the wind patterned the sea in shifting ripples and ruffles. A flock of shearwaters soared by at eye level.

Within a few hours, the ridgelines of steep Hvar appeared, revealing terraced lavender fields and olive orchards. Motoring down a long, narrow inlet, we arrived in Stari Grad , a village of stone homes with terra cotta roof tiles, as travelers had since 384 B.C., when Greek sailors from the island of Paros settled here.

Our mooring provided a front-row view of fishing boats and cafes animating the waterfront. Stari Grad’s attractions, including the Greek ruins of Faros and a 17th-century Venetian cathedral, had yet to open for the season, but we relished exploring the old quarter’s narrow lanes and deserted plazas.

From the waterfront, an aerobic 20-minute hike up a steep hill crowned by a giant white cross offered views over Stari Grad and the plains beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fourth-century agricultural fields, with stone walls circumscribing grapevines and olive orchards.

That evening, we visited them to reach Konoba Kokot , a farm restaurant that specializes in “peka,” a kind of barbecue in which meat cooks under an iron lid piled with hot coals. The family that runs it opened in the preseason, welcoming us with bracing shots of rakija, a local herbal liquor. At a long table under an arbor, we gorged on homemade goat cheese, wild boar pate and, from the hearth, roast lamb, veal and octopus with limitless jugs of red and white wine for 35 euros a person.

Starry nights

Small ships are unmatched at getting into small ports, but a yacht trip is also a little like camping, starting most mornings with D.I.Y. instant coffee. Marinas offered free bathhouses with showers.

Cool temperatures apparently deterred the celebrity-filled mega yachts, which are known to anchor in the town of Hvar on the south shore of Hvar island. Our captain declared it the “Mykonos of Croatia” as we motored by the port bustling with visitors carrying shopping bags and cones of gelato.

With clear weather in the forecast, we moored in an undeveloped cove east of town. The mooring belonged to the owners of Moli Onte restaurant, who ferried us to land on a motorized dingy, allowing us enough time before dinner to visit the fortress above Hvar and have an Ozujsko beer on St. Stephens Square, the largest in the region of Dalmatia.

Back on board, with no artificial light to wash out the night sky, we hit the upper deck for stargazing. As my shipmates peeled off to bed, I grabbed a blanket and beanie and bedded down under the stars for the evolving show, periodically waking to catch the drama of the moon rising, reflected in the still water.

Little Dubrovnik

Fingers of gray rock reached down to meet sloping vineyards along Hvar’s south coast as we departed for its neighbor, Korcula. On our longest day of sailing, five hours, I welcomed the chance to play first mate, manning the lines on the jib sail.

To break up the trip, Captain Ljubovic navigated to a quiet cove off the Peljesac Peninsula where the Caribbean-blue waters, cloudless sky and sandy bottom convinced us to jump in despite numbing sea temperatures.

Fifteenth-century walls ring the historic center of Korcula, earning it the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Past the stone gates carved with a winged lion representing the empire of Venice, which controlled much of the Adriatic after the 13th century, narrow alleys led to ornate churches and mansions. There was no better history trip than getting lost in the web of pedestrian lanes. Or so we told ourselves as we passed the purported home of Marco Polo, still closed preseason.

Along the seafront walls, restaurants served pizza and seafood under lights strung in the pines and we caught sunset from a former turret, now converted into Massimo Cocktail Bar , which requires patrons to climb a ladder to the rooftop, a caution against second rounds.

The most romantic port of the trip was also the rowdiest, at least in the marina, which was hosting a Polish sailing regatta. When I headed for the showers at 6 a.m. the next morning, I found a group still cheerfully dancing atop a yacht littered in empty booze bottles and crushed potato chips.

Marooned on Mljet

We left Korcula on strong 20-knot “jugo” or south winds and Captain Ljubovic unleashed the sails, saying “You paid for a sailing vacation, not a motorboat.”

As we tacked back and forth toward Mljet , the boat heeled at a queasy angle and we took face shots of ocean spray.

On Mljet, where the western end of the island is home to Mljet National Park , we rented bikes (10 euros) to ride a lung-busting route over the park’s mountain spine. On the other side, we cycled around a pair of inland lakes and took a boat trip to a 12th-century monastery built on an island in one of them (park admission, 15 euros).

Docked in the still sleepy town of Polace, we heard tales of high season, when up to 100 yachts anchor in the bay and members of the band U2 were once seen biking in the park. After a brief shower, the town glimmered at sunset and the restaurant Stella Maris welcomed us with grilled sea bass (25 euros) and prawns (20 euros).

“I’m so glad I chose this time, because I don’t do crowds,” said my shipmate Nova Hey, 46, of Sydney, who was traveling with her 18-year-old daughter.

In the morning, I had the trail to the peak of Montokuc to myself. The roughly three-mile round-trip hike reached one of the highest points on the island, a rocky knob with stunning panoramas shared by a family of feral goats.

Not long thereafter, the Sauternes’ engine refused to turn over, stranding us in a national park on a remote island with no mechanics.

Teeming Dubrovnik

The next morning, Captain Ljubovic jimmied a fix but it didn’t last long and the engine died again, this time just opposite a cave on Mljet that we joked had to be the refuge of Odysseus.

After a morning of light sailing, a mechanic from the mainland arrived by speedboat and within an hour we were motoring toward the Franjo Tudman Bridge that spans the inlet to the Dubrovnik marina where hot showers awaited.

“Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia,” said Captain Ljubovic as we spent the last of our pooled money, 70 euros, hiring a taxi van to get us to and from the walled heart of the ancient city about 15 minutes away.

With two large cruise ships in port, Dubrovnik was teeming with visitors and the price to climb the stone walls that encircle the city was a sticker-shocking 35 euros. (In the ensuing two days Kim and I would spend post-cruise in the city, we bought the more comprehensive Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros that included admission to the walls as well as several museums and public bus transportation.)

On our final evening, we measured the lack of crowds versus closed museums; perfect hiking weather versus swim-inviting water; ample dock space versus more restaurant choices — and felt we’d come out ahead sailing in the bargain season.

Plan Your Cruise With AAA

With many cruise lines now catering to the single crowd, going on a cruise as a single adult can be a great way to meet interesting people to make new friends, new connections and lifelong memories.

No matter what you envision from your dream singles cruise, you can find a ship and a series of destinations that will create unforgettable memories. There are a lot of options to explore, however and the sheer range of choices can quickly feel overwhelming. To help, we've highlighted several of the best cruises for singles. Keep reading to learn what, exactly, sets these expeditions apart.

1. Celebrity Millennium: Bali, Malaysia and Thailand

Many singles gravitate towards exciting adventures in exotic destinations such as Bali, Malaysia and Thailand, which hold appeal simply because they provide such distinct scenery and such powerful cultural experiences.

Not all singles are willing or prepared to navigate these destinations on their own, however and this is where the Celebrity Millennium comes into play: an upscale cruise removes the hassle of planning and, instead, encourages you to relax in style.

This particular Celebrity Millennium adventure spans nearly two weeks, incorporating a unique blend of serene island adventures, cosmopolitan exploration and meaningful temple visits. Onboard, globally inspired menus and resort-style lounges are to be expected, along with plenty of adults-only spaces that will appeal to singles.

2. Celebrity Apex: Norwegian Fjords

If Norway's iconic fjords are on your bucket list, you can't afford to miss this awe-inspiring Celebrity Apex trip . Departing from Southampton, the eight-night cruise meanders along the coast of Norway, hitting pleasant spots such as Geiranger or Kristiansand for spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures. Side trips are available and, with up to ten hours docked, there is plenty of time to explore at your own pace.

Accommodation options abound and, when traveling alone, the staterooms' king-size mattresses feel extra spacious. An adults-only solarium will appeal to relaxation-oriented solo travelers, while abundant dining and entertainment options make it easy to find and connect with new friends.

3. Celebrity Summit: Grand Heartland Adventure

If you're struggling to choose between glamorous onboard experiences and outdoorsy experiences on land, you're in luck: Celebrity Summit provides the best of both worlds with its various Cruisetour offerings. There are many excellent options that depart from Vancouver, Anchorage or Fairbanks — but the Grand Heartland Adventure is worth considering if you crave something new.

During the Grand Heartland Cruisetour, you'll explore the stunning Inside Passage by cruise ship, before docking in adventure-oriented destinations such as Juneau and Sitka. From there, you'll continue to observe national treasures such as the Hubbard Glacier. Further exploration takes place aboard a glass-domed railcar and even a riverboat.

There's also a lot to experience onboard. The AquaClass stateroom represents a true oasis for single travelers, but the exclusive cocktail lounge and martini bar also warrant a visit. With nearly two weeks of cruising and exploration, you'll have plenty of time to unwind on your own but can also form fast friendships with similarly adventurous travelers.

4. Celebrity Edge: Taste of Luxury

Cruises for singles over 50 often emphasize the finer things in life, like elevated cuisine or exquisite wines. These sophisticated details are in abundant supply aboard the Celebrity Edge, which offers a decidedly elegant experience with its Taste of Luxury tour. Although often frequented by retired couples, Celebrity Edge's trips work well as singles cruises.

Available for three or four nights, this remarkable journey begins in Sydney and primarily emphasizes curated on-board experiences. That being said, there are enticing opportunities to explore while docked in Tasmania. With such glamorous suites, restaurants and clubs on board, however, the best attractions can be enjoyed without ever leaving this luxury cruise ship.

5. Disney Wish: Bahamian Cruise from Port Canaveral

Don't assume that Disney cruise adventures are only for kids or families. If you are a proud Disney adult, you can make amazing memories aboard a thematic cruise for singles. This is a popular vacation among theme park enthusiasts, who enjoy a dose of Disney magic while also finding valuable opportunities to indulge and relax.

Disney Wish's three-night Bahamian cruise is also an excellent option for singles who crave a sea-based experience but only have a few days to spare. Yes, young travelers will be around, but there are plenty of adult-only spaces, including sports bars, dance clubs, dedicated pools and even an onboard spa and salon. Musicals, 3D films and fireworks encourage you to embrace your inner child.

6. Oceania Cruises: In the Path of Cartier — Boston to Montreal

As we've mentioned, smaller ships provide some of the best cruises for singles over 50. Not everyone desires a river-based trip, however and with Oceania Cruises , there is no need to choose between exclusivity and ocean liner grandeur.

A signature experience can be found aboard Oceania Cruises' iconic Nautica ship, which is calming, yet elegant. Echoing the journey of the famed explorer Jacques Cartier, this tour provides a powerful introduction to Quebec, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and New Brunswick.

The land-based excursions are highly educational and, of course, beautiful to behold, but there's also a lot to love on board. Belgian chocolate, Bulgari amenities and turndown service await, with many accommodations also providing spectacular views. Open-seating dining makes it easy to interact with other vacationers while wine-tasting and guest lectures promise plenty of onboard enrichment.

7. Oceania Riviera: Ancient World Wonders — Athens to Istanbul

Another appealing option for singles who prefer slightly smaller ships, Oceania Cruises' Ancient World Wonders tour provides stops at some of the world's most iconic locations, such as Santorini and Corfu. Adventures in Dubrovnik and Istanbul can also be expected. On board this remarkable vessel, you'll gaze in awe at the Lalique Grand Staircase and, in general, enjoy a refined ambiance.

Be prepared to try new flavors and forms of expression as you explore unique offerings such as the Artist Loft and Culinary Center. Deep relaxation awaits at the Aquamar Spa or within your luxuriously contemporary stateroom or suite. This ten-night voyage provides plenty of time to lose yourself in the grandeur of the ship and the treasures of Greece, Montenegro, Croatia and Turkey.

A cruise ship rescues 68 migrants and finds 5 bodies in a boat adrift in the Atlantic Ocean

  • Copy Link copied

MADRID (AP) — A cruise ship rescued 68 migrants and found five bodies in a traditional fishing boat that was drifting off the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said Thursday.

It said an oil tanker traveling from northwestern Spain to Brazil spotted the drifting boat on Wednesday afternoon about 815 kilometers (506 miles) south of Tenerife, one of the seven islands in the Canaries archipelago.

Spanish authorities diverted the Insignia, a cruise ship, to rescue the migrants. The Insignia crew also recovered three of the five bodies on the fishing boat. The remains of two people were left at sea because of bad weather hampering their recovery.

The canoe-shaped boats, known as pirogues, are used by fishermen in Mauritania and Senegal.

It is unusual for cruise ships to make rescues of migrants on the Atlantic route, but the pirogue “was a long way out and they could be in danger,” said a maritime rescue’s spokesperson, speaking on condition of anonymity under departmental rules.

One of the passengers on the cruise ship, Steve Dilbeck from Huntington Beach, California, said they were not told about the dead.

Image

“They did say the boat had been at sea for 20 days,” Dilbeck told The Associated Press in a text message. “We were diverted in the evening and took us two hours to reach them. They were brought on board and placed in the Insignia Lounge, which is where they have all their shows.”

“The area has been closed off to passengers. Told they had them remove their clothes and put on jumpsuits. Then they asked passengers if they had shoes and clothes they could donate, particularly for men. Their announcement said 62 were men, with the rest women and children,” he added.

The Marshall Islands-flagged Insignia had left Mindelo, a port city in Cape Verde, on Tuesday. Its operator, Miami-based Oceania Cruises, did not immediately comment on the rescue.

The Spanish rescue agency emailed a statement saying the Insignia is expected to arrive on Friday at the port of Santa Cruz, Tenerife.

The Canary Islands is a destination for boats packed with migrants departing from northwestern Africa on a perilous Atlantic route in search of a better life in Europe.

Spain’s Interior Ministry says a record 55,618 migrants arrived by boat — most of them in the Canary Islands — last year, almost double the number of the previous year. More than 23,000 have landed so far this year, the ministry said.

The Spanish nonprofit organization Caminando Fronteras (Walking Borders) says more than 5,000 migrants have died so far this year through May while trying to reach Spanish coasts, most of them on the Atlantic route. The figure for all 2023 was 6,600, more than double the number for 2022.

Associated Press writer Beth Harris in Los Angeles contributed to this report.

6 Top Transatlantic Cruises for 2024

T ransatlantic cruises are unique when you compare them to traditional cruises most people book for family trips and romantic getaways. These voyages tend to be longer in general, and they have more built-in days at sea and offer a lot more time on board as a result. Repositioning cruises that include a transatlantic crossing tend to attract more retirees and travelers who just want to relax and enjoy their ships' amenities, especially since fewer days in port means fewer excursions and more time doing nothing at all.

That said, the fact that transatlantic cruises can last as few as seven nights means they may fit in your plans more easily than you may think. There are also some benefits to transatlantic crossings that may not be obvious, including lower nightly rates, more onboard credit, and more time to kick back and relax at a floating luxury resort in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

If you're curious which transatlantic cruises are best for 2024, here are six top picks with different cruise lengths, itineraries and unique destinations to explore.

Explore cruises on GoToSea , a service of U.S. News.

Cunard Line

Date: Departs May 5, 2024

Departure port: Brooklyn, New York

Starting price: $2,449 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 7 to 18 nights

In May of 2024, Cunard's Queen Mary 2 vessel will offer three different transatlantic crossings of various lengths. Choose from a seven-night sailing from Brooklyn, New York , to Southampton, England; a nine-night sailing to Hamburg, Germany ; and an 18-night round-trip sailing that departs from Brooklyn and crosses the Atlantic twice on the way back to its starting point. This unique combination of itineraries lets you cross the sea and tailor your trip to how long you want to be away from home.

The 18-night itinerary is especially interesting, since it lets you depart from the United States and arrive back in Brooklyn in the end with stops in both England and Germany, as well as plenty of sea days in between. Luxury cruise line Cunard is known for its elegant design, lush amenities and upscale feel, and the Queen Mary 2 is one of the line's most luxurious ships. Highlights on this exclusive vessel include the Royal Court Theatre, a casino, gala evenings, an onboard spa and a vast library. The Queen Mary 2 holds up to 2,691 guests with 1,173 crew to cater to your every need.

Seabourn Cruise Line

Date: Departs March 24, 2024

Departure port: Miami

Starting price: $5,949 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 21 nights

Seabourn is offering a 21-night transatlantic cruise from Miami on Seabourn Quest in March 2024 that offers a diverse range of ports of call before ending its voyage in Las Palmas in Spain's Canary Islands . Departure from Miami is followed by nine days at sea. Then, you'll enjoy multiple stops in the Canary Islands – including Santa Cruz de La Palma and San Sebastián de La Gomera – as well as stops in Praia and Mindelo the Cape Verde archipelago.

This journey with Seabourn makes it possible for travelers to see some of the most beautiful and remote tropical islands in the world. The Canary Islands are known for their white sand beaches , volcanoes and lush greenery; similar landscapes can also be found in Cape Verde's coastal towns and villages. Seabourn Quest, a smaller ocean vessel, accommodates just 229 guests.

MSC Cruises

Date: Departs Nov. 8, 2024

Departure port: Southampton, England

Starting price: $769 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 16 nights

The MSC Virtuosa from MSC Cruises is repositioning from Europe to the Caribbean in November 2024, which gives travelers the chance to enjoy a lengthy transatlantic crossing with plenty of unique ports. This sailing departs from England with eight sea days plus stops in France, the Azores of Portugal, St. Maarten , Antigua and Barbuda, and Martinique . The ship ends its journey in Pointe-a-Pitre, Guadeloupe.

The MSC Virtuosa is a larger cruise vessel that boasts an impressive grand promenade with a LED dome ceiling, dedicated clubs for children and teens, an onboard spa, a lavish casino and the luxurious MSC Yacht Club section of the ship. This vessel holds a maximum of 6,334 passengers at once.

360 Kiosk Email : Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Princess Cruises

Date: Departs July 5, 2024

Departure port: New York City (Manhattan or Brooklyn)

Starting price: $4,098 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 31 nights

Princess Cruises also offers its share of transatlantic sailings on various vessels. Its 31-night crossing from New York to Barcelona, Spain , on Island Princess in July 2024 is jam-packed with exciting destinations to explore. This lengthy transatlantic voyage has only 13 sea days with planned stops in Canada's Newfoundland, Greenland, Iceland, Scotland, England, Spain, Portugal and Morocco before the journey ends in Barcelona.

This intriguing sailing experience with Princess takes passengers to eight different countries in the span of a month. Island Princess is a nice ship for a long sailing because of its smaller size, with just 2,200 passengers and 900 crew. But the ship is also large enough to have a huge selection of included and specialty dining options, a Vegas-style casino, a sports court, a large central atrium for gathering, and several pools and hot tubs to enjoy.

Celebrity Cruises

Date: Departs April 11, 2024

Departure port: Fort Lauderdale, Florida

Starting price: $760 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 12 nights

Celebrity Cruises is offering a 12-night sailing on Celebrity Equinox in April 2024 that starts in Fort Lauderdale, Florida , and ends in Lisbon, Portugal – making it possible for travelers to enjoy eight relaxing days at sea. What's interesting about this sailing is its stops along the way, which include the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda; Porta Delgada in Portugal's Azores archipelago; and Porto in mainland Portugal.

The Celebrity Equinox accommodates a maximum of just 2,852 passengers at once, so this Celebrity vessel is a solid choice for travelers who want just the right size ship instead of a smaller vessel or a megaship. There are also plenty of onboard features to keep you happy and entertained as you float across the Atlantic Ocean, including The Casino, The Lawn Club with outdoor games like bocce ball and croquet, The Martini Bar, the adults-only Solarium and more.

Royal Caribbean International

Dates: Departs Oct. 24, 2024

Departure port: Barcelona, Spain

Starting price: $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees)

Cruise length: 14 nights

Royal Caribbean's Oasis of the Seas is hosting a transatlantic voyage in October 2024 that departs from Barcelona, Spain, and ends in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. This vessel will make stops in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia, Cartagena and Málaga in Spain, then spend eight days at sea. After that, enjoy a day in Nassau in the Bahamas before the cruise drops passengers off in sunny Florida.

Interior staterooms on this Royal Caribbean sailing start at just $876 per person (plus port taxes and fees), which works out to around $60 per night, per person. The Oasis of the Seas megaship can hold a total of 6,771 guests and 2,109 crew, so it's an enormous vessel – to put it mildly. This size may not be ideal for travelers who want a more intimate cruising experience, but it's perfect for cruisers who want plenty of space to spread out and endless activities to take part in. Oasis of the Seas boasts 20 different restaurants and cafes, 11 bars and lounges, a variety of pools and whirlpools, a rock climbing wall, the AquaTheater diving and entertainment venue, mini-golf, a casino and plenty more.
