Experience History and Nature at Nickajack Cave

Historic Nickajack Cave, partially flooded by its namesake lake, is considered to be biologically one of the most important caves in Tennessee. This is primarily because of the thousands of gray bats that inhabit it from late April through early October, with peak numbers being in June and July. The gray bat, a medium-sized short-eared species, is one of over a dozen in Tennessee and is listed as federally endangered.

Cliff swallows also inhabit the cave, co-existing with the bats and building mud nests on the ceiling. The swallows eat the same insects as the bats, but during the day, while the bats feed at night.

Paddle to the Cave

The Maple View site is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Central Time from April through October. The Maple View area is minimally maintained, but there are a number of picnic tables and a pavilion. The restrooms are closed, but a portable outhouse is provided.

Some History of the Cave

A known landmark for hundreds of years, Nickajack Cave has served as a shelter for Native Americans and, later, river pirates. It was a source of saltpeter, used in making gunpowder, in both the War of 1812 and for the Confederacy in the Civil War. Although there seems to be a variety of opinions on the origin of the name “Nickajack,” there was once a Cherokee town of Nickajack located between the cave and the Tennessee River.

chattanooga cave boat tour

Both the town of Nickajack and the nearby town of Running Water were destroyed by territorial militias in 1794. Various commercial interests ran boat tours into the cave off and on since 1872. Before the lake existed, a creek ran out of the cave. The entrance once measured 140 feet in width by 50 feet in height, but since the formation of Nickajack Lake in 1967 flooded the entrance, the height is only 20 to 25 feet. The entrance was fenced off to keep boats out in 1981 in order to protect the bats. In 1992, TWRA designated Nickajack Cave as Tennessee’s first non-game wildlife refuge.

Directions to Nickajack Cave

Nickajack Cave is located in New Hope, about 25 miles from downtown Chattanooga. Going west on I-24, take exit 161 at Haletown. Turn left on Highway 156. In about 5 miles, you’ll see the cave across the water on your left. The Maple View Day Use Area will be on the left immediately upon passing the lake.

This was a bit of a challenge for me since I am not really comfortable being on the water. Experience Nickajack Cave and 300+ Years of Tennessee History

Nickajack Cave in Tennessee’s Marion County is a massive, partially submerged cave. What makes this cave particularly interesting is the plethora of historical tidbits that accompany it.

After the construction of the Nickajack Dam by the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1967, a portion of the area was submerged by Nickajack Lake.

In its original configuration, the width and height of the entrance were 140 and 50 feet, respectively. Because of the current water level (about 25-30 feet), the dry entry is only around 140 feet wide and 20-25 feet high. The rising water levels have threatened the vast population of gray bats who call this building home.

Nickajack, a Chickamauga Cherokee settlement situated between the cave’s entrance and the Tennessee River, inspired the name. When the Nickajack Expedition came through in 1794, they attacked and leveled the whole town.

An image of Nickajack dam and a beautiful rainbow behind it.

Nickajack Cave Location and Directions

New Hope is roughly 25 miles from Chattanooga. To reach Haletown from the westbound I-24, get off at exit 161, and take a left onto State Route 156. About 5 miles from here, you should be able to spot the cave on your left, across the river. Shortly after you cross the bridge across the lake, you’ll see the Maple View Day Use Area on your left.

Nickajack Cave History

Territorial militias wiped down Nickajack and neighboring Running Water in 1794. Since 1872, numerous for-profit enterprises have offered boat tours inside the cave. A creek once emerged from the cave before the lake formed.

In 1981, a fence was erected at the entrance to prevent boats from entering the cave, protecting the bats from harm. TWRA established Nickajack Cave in 1992 as the state’s first non-game wildlife preserve.

After 1800, James Ore began extracting saltpeter from Nickajack Cave. The cave was located on Cherokee land then; therefore, this exploration was only possible with their blessing. During the War of 1812, mining operations remained active.

An image of the dark, massive flooded entrance to Nickajack Cave.

Civil War Mining

Before the Civil War, Robert Cravens, a successful businessman from Chattanooga, ran Nickajack Cave and his cave, Lookout Mountain Cave. The Confederate administration quickly assumed control of Nickajack Cave after hostilities began.

According to Wikipedia, Nickajack Cave served as one of the largest saltpeter caves operated by the Confederate Nitre Bureau during the Civil War. Saltpeter was the main ingredient of gunpowder, and this made Nickajack cave a significant location. Losing the site to Federal troops was a serious blow to the Confederacy.

Johnny Cash’s Change of Heart

A picture of Johnny Cash strumming a guitar, sitting on a couch while looking up at the ceiling. Johnny Cash was planning to commit suicide at Nickajack Cave.

In 1967, musician Johnny Cash planned to commit suicide in the cave, but after having a spiritual experience there, he decided to abandon his drug use instead.

Gary Allan , a country music musician, wrote a song about this event for his 2005 album Tough All Over.

Since 1872, when record-keeping began, Nickajack Cave has been used for profit. A newspaper article from July 2, 1872, mentions the steamship R. J. excursions that left Chattanooga.

Jackson would take people to the cave on tours, and once there, they would be taken inside by boat with the help of guides.

Visitors could return to Chattanooga via rail from Shellmound, conveniently positioned just outside the cave’s exit.

In 1927, Lawrence S. Ashley, had mysteriously vanished while exploring the cave.

Newspapers in his hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and The New York Times, wrote about his disappearance. Ashley claimed he dug his way through a new entry 8 miles away after getting “lost” from August 15 through August 22, 1927.

But there’s a twist! The whole thing was a deception to get more people to explore the cave. By the 1940s, Leo Lambert, also credited with creating the neighboring Chattanooga attraction Ruby Falls , managed the cave.

It was sometime in the late 1940s when commercial operations at the cave ceased. As recently as the 1960s, before the cave was flooded, visitors could still see the remains of the gatehouse and the concrete floors that led to the interior chambers.

The cave’s entrance is enormous. Just outside the cave’s opening was a tiny lake nourished by the water from the cave’s internal stream.

When tours weren’t available, guests had to wade through waist-deep water for roughly a quarter mile to reach the cave proper. Once upon a time, it was said that the underground network continued for miles and miles, but a cave-in at the cave’s back now prevents that from happening.

Bats of Nickajack

Nickajack Cave is one of Tennessee’s most significant ecological caverns, despite being half submerged by its eponymous lake. The thousands of gray bats that live there from late April to early October (with the highest concentrations in June and July) are primarily responsible for this.

While there are more than a dozen species of bats in Tennessee, the gray bat is the only one on the federal endangered species list.

They give birth and roost in Nickajack Cave at this time of year, and after dark every day, they emerge from the cave’s mouth in a seemingly endless stream to forage for food, a process that takes around 45 minutes and involves, on average, over 100,000 bats.

These creatures consume an estimated total of 274,000 kg of insects annually. Mayflies and stoneflies are their favorite prey, although they will also consume mosquitoes, caddis flies, beetles, moths, and other aquatic insects if necessary. Bats leave their summer roosts searching for winter hibernation caverns as temperatures rise.

Along with the bats, the cave is home to cliff swallows, which make their nests in the muck that covers the roof. Swallows, like bats, eat insects but do so during the day, while bats prefer the darkness of the night.

How to Access Nickajack Cave

Paddling a canoe, kayak, or paddleboard to within viewing distance of a cave entrance at dusk is a common approach to observing bats emerging for the night. From the boat ramp at Maple View Day Use Area in New Hope, it’s only a short paddle to the water.

Nickajack Cave is located on one side of the bay, while an additional access point is the Cole City Creek boat ramp near Macedonia Baptist Church.

A walkway of about a thousand feet will take you from the Maple View Day Use Area, along the coastline, and through the woods to an observation platform, from which you may get a good look at the cave entrance, albeit not as close as you would get by boat.

chattanooga cave boat tour

After dusk, you might not see many bats for approximately half an hour. You may see them most clearly from the lookout if you look up at the sky. They usually make a U-turn and head in the direction of the tree line that runs parallel to the coast.

Between April and October, you can visit the Maple View location between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m. A few picnic tables and a pavilion sit in the sparsely maintained Maple View area.

As a wildlife refuge, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency now manages Nickajack Cave. Over one hundred thousand bats make their home in the cave.

In the spring, pregnant gray bats will go to the cave, which serves as a maternity roost for the bats. Visitors can see the bats take off at dusk to eat from a viewing platform next to the cave’s mouth.

Civil War-era Graffiti at Craighead Caverns in Sweetwater TN

The History of Craighead Caverns

Although the concept for the Lost Sea in Tennessee didn’t begin to take shape until 1915, Craighead Caverns have been used by humans for centuries.

They were named for original owner Chief Craighead, who used the East Tennessee caverns as a meeting place for Cherokee tribal councils. An array of Indian artifacts (including pottery, weapons, and jewelry) have been found nearly a mile from the Lost Sea entrance in a cave now known as “The Council Room.”

After European settlers made their way to the Blue Ridge Mountains of Tennessee in the 1820s, they began used the Lost Sea caverns (which maintain a constant 58°F temperature) for storing potatoes and vegetables.

During the Civil War , the Confederate Army mined the Sweetwater TN cave for saltpeter, an essential ingredient used to make gunpowder. Graffiti in the cave from 1863 has been carbon tested and authenticated as being 160 years old!

The underground cavern lake was discovered in 1905 by a 13-year-old local, Ben Sands. He played in the caves often, and crawled into a room so large he couldn’t see its walls with his lantern. He threw mud balls in all directions and heard splashes.

Unfortunately, by the time he convinced his dad to investigate, the water level of the lake in the cave had risen, so he could no longer find the entrance.

But when local explorers re-discovered the cave decades later, Sands got the credit. A beaming portrait of him visiting the attraction as an elderly man adorns the wall of The Lost Sea caverns entrance today.

In 1939, explorers found the fossilized remains of a Pleistocene Jaguar and an Elk fawn, which led to an excavation by paleontologists from the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.

The Tennessee landmark was added to the US National Parks list of National Natural Landmarks in 1974.

Flowstone formations at Craighead Caverns/Lost Sea Adventure Cave in Sweetwater TN

Exploring Craighead Caverns

Craighead Caverns is a little more off-the-beaten-path than major Tennessee caves such as Ruby Falls. Located between the small towns of Madisonville and Sweetwater TN, it’s surrounded by pastoral farms .

Where the Ruby Falls cave is narrow and filled with intricate geological formations, Craighead Caverns is more expansive. And where tours at Ruby Falls run like clockwork, in our experience the Lost Sea caverns tour felt more casual and leisurely.

Our Lost Sea guide chatted with guests amiably before briefly outlining the rules (which also appear on signs at the entrance), instructing us not to touch anything due to the vulnerability of the geological formations in the caves .

Then he led us across a narrow wooden  bridge to see one of the cave’s few examples of stalactite (which hang down from the ceiling) and stalagmite (which grow up from the floor) formations.

Our young guide had an expansive knowledge of the Lost Sea caverns features, pointing out anthodites , a.k.a. “cave flowers .” These cave formations have long, feathery white crystals that look like tiny versions of Superman’s “Fortress of Solitude.”

Making our way down deeper into the caverns, we saw the late-1800s graffiti, an authentic Appalachian moonshine still that was found there, a wooden vat used to cook saltpeter, and even some small waterfalls .

There are lots of interesting little details along the way, but the entire walk to the Lost Sea’s main attraction– the world-famous underground lake of Sweetwater TN– takes no more than 20 to 25 minutes.

Underground Lake at Lost Sea Adventure Caverns in Tennessee

The Underground Lake at the Lost Sea Adventure

The Lost Sea measures approximately 800 feet long and 220 feet deep, with a maximum depth of around 70 feet. This makes it second to Namibia’s Dragon Breath Cave among the largest non-subglacial underground lakes in the world.

We’ve written about how much we love lakes many times, and have visited countless lakes on 6 continents. But the Lost Sea’s underground lake was like nothing we’d ever seen, with colored lighting casting an eerie, mysterious glow.

This is one of the few caves with boat rides in the entire world, and the voices of everyone on our Lost Sea tour became hushed and reverent as soon as we laid eyes upon the gorgeous lake .

I couldn’t tell you how long our Lost Sea boat ride lasted, because we were so thoroughly mesmerized by what proved to be an almost otherworldly experience.

Warm lights with autumn colors illuminated the water just enough to draw our attention to the trout that live there. Our guide explained that the fish were brought in as a tourist attraction years ago, and are fed by the staff regularly.

Our eyes eventually began to adjust to the dim lighting of the Lost Sea caverns , but it was still a strain to see the far reaches of it.

There’s no music , so the only sound in the cave is that of an aerator used to help the fish get more oxygen. The overall effect is truly magical, and precisely what you’d want from an underground cave in Tennessee .

Due to the incline, the hike back up to the top of the cave was a challenge for some guests on our Lost Sea Adventure tour.

But thankfully the guides took it slow and easy, stopping for rest (and questions) several times along the way as we walked back to the Craighead Caverns entrance.

Other Lost Sea Adventure Tours

Once you exit through the gift shop (which offers a quirky collection of souvenirs and other tchotchkes), you’ll have a chance to explore a charming   village that includes a general store, old-time blacksmith’s workshop, sweet shop, and more.

But if you want to spend even more time exploring Craigshead Caverns, check out the Lost Sea’s Wild Cave Tours , which is designed for groups such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, schools, camps, and churches.

In addition to the regular cavern tour, daytime and overnight Wild Cave Tours take visitors into undeveloped cave rooms that require some crawling through cracks and crevices to reach hidden nooks.

During these tours,  guides take more time to point out striking geological formations such as anthodites (of which the Lost Sea contains 50% of the world’s known formations).

Note that adult chaperones are required for the overnight caving excursions, which have a required minimum of 12 participants. Long pants are also required, as are good flashlights with extra batteries, sleeping bags, and ample drinking water.

It’s a rare opportunity for camping inside this unique Tennessee cave system, and all participants can purchase a “Lost Sea Wild Cave Spelunker” as a keepsake of their incredible experience. –by Bret Love; all photos by Bret Love & Mary Gabbett

We had a fantastic time exploring the beautiful Chattanooga area through its various boat tours and river cruises. The Tennessee River offers stunning views, and there’s no better way to experience it than by boat.

Here are some additional things to consider when planning your Chattanooga boat tour experience:

  • Tour duration: Most tours last between 1.5 to 2 hours, with some private excursions offering 6-hour trips.
  • Price range: Prices can vary widely, from $30.99 for sightseeing cruises to more expensive private charters.
  • Age restrictions: Some tours may have minimum age requirements or recommend certain ages for the best experience. Be sure to check before booking.

In short, exploring Chattanooga’s waterways through its boat tours has been an unforgettable experience. We highly recommend adding one of these river cruises or boat tours to your itinerary when visiting the Scenic City.

Chattanooga Ducks

This was our second trip on the Ducks. It is both entertaining and educational. I have never done anything in Chattanooga that I enjoyed more. A must for out of town guests. We plan to take some more friends in a few weeks! Captain Barry is fantastic!

We were aboard the General Bradley with our captain, a native Chattanoogan who has a vast knowledge of the local history, the city, the river, and the craft. Very informative. He let the kids drive while on the water. Gave some info about local eateries and places to visit. I highly recommend this tour.

While we were not quite sure what to expect, we had a blast both on land and in the water on our tour. Our guide and driver was knowledgeable and entertaining, which made the whole experience a pleasure. Highly recommend!

This is a GREAT historical tour wrapped up with some humor and just plain fun. If you are an adventurous young person, you just may be able to be "captain for a day". This is a great way to round out your sightseeing in Chattanooga, with a cruise on the Tennessee River on a DUCK.

We were a very small tour, but had so much fun. Our guide was super informative and we learned all about the history of the area and the Tennessee River. The tour was on time and definitely worth the money. We would do it again.

Taking a tour on a duck is always a good time and Chattanooga Ducks is no exception! The tour guide was super friendly and had tons of interesting information and history about the history as we toured around. He also had a wealth of information about all the things to do and see in the city during our trip!
