Chembra Peak Wayanad Timings

Trekking Time is from 7 am to 2 pm

Surrounded by hills, tea plantations and lush green valley, Chembra Peak is the highest mountain peak in Wayanad. It is 2100 m above sea level.

The place is protected by the forest department, and it has maintained its originality over the years. It is the ideal tourist spot if you're looking for a serene nature walk. Chembra Peak is a picturesque location from where you can get breathtaking views of the exotic flora and fauna of the region.

The forest department organises the Chembra Peak trek, which takes you through evergreen forests, waterfalls and lush greenery to a heart-shaped lake. The lake is bound to capture your heart at first sight.

As per the beliefs, Goddess Sita took bath in the Chembra Peak lake. It is also said this lake has never dried.

Walking through the tea plantations, towards the mist-covered views, you’ll have one of the most amazing experiences during trekking. On an overcast day, you’ll find yourself walking among the clouds.

Chembra Peak is perfect for a weekend trip with family or a trekking expedition with your friends. Get permission from the forest office, take a deep breath and start walking.

Things to do at Chembra Peak

1. Enjoying the panoramic views – About 1 km from the ticket counter, you'll come across the watchtower. You can climb to the top and enjoy the unadulterated views of the valley and the city. On a clear day, you might also see the peak. You can take your car up to the watchtower or walk the distance. It is the starting point for the trek.

2. Clicking photographs – For photographers, the place is heaven. You are surrounded with majestic views right from the beginning of your Chembra Peak drive. You’ll come across green tea plantations and spice plantations along the road. And as you trek your way up towards the peak, you’ll witness the lush green cover all around. The trek ends at the beautiful heart-shaped lake, which is also popular as Cupid Lake. Savour the moments with your camera.

3. Trekking up to the Chembra Peak Heart Lake – The Vana Samrakshana Samithi (VSS), a part of the forest department, organises day trekking to the lake. The management is under the control of the District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC) of Wayanad. It provides guides to accompany you during the trek.

Chembra Peak Trekking Details

People begin trekking from the ticket counter itself. But the starting point for the trek is at the watchtower, about 1 km away. And you can drive your vehicle to the parking spot near that tower. Jeeps are also available from the ticket counter to take you to the Chembra Peak trek starting point.

You will need permission from the forest department to begin your trek. And only 200 people are given Chembra Peak permission per day, on a first-come-first-serve basis. You can get yours on the spot from the ticket counter. The tickets also include the charges for a guide. Although you don't need a guide for the trek, having one will enhance the experience. The guides have interesting stories related to Chembra Peak, the city and the surrounding area.

From the watchtower, the trek to the heart-shaped Chembra Peak pond begins, the one-way distance of which is about 2 km. The pond, known as hridhayathadakam in the local language, is set among green meadows, alongside gorgeous panoramic views of the valley.

The trekking trail is rated as moderately difficult, and it takes you through tea plantations and the forest. Afterwards, you get in the open space, with an easy to moderate difficulty trekking.

At its highest point, you will witness the top view of the lake. From there, you can walk your way down to the lake. After spending time there, you must descend to the base, i.e. the ticket counter, by evening. Overnight camping is not allowed at Chembra Peak.

Chembra Peak Wayanad trekking is the most exquisite trekking experience in all of Kerala.

The total length of the trek is around 4.5 km to the Chembra Peak. The watchtower is about a km away from the counter and the lake is 2 km uphill from there. The peak is further 1.5 km from the lake, but the guards and guides don’t allow trekking till there. So, the effective length of the trek is around 3-3.5 km.

Chembra Peak Wayanad Timings and Entry Fee

The day trekking at Chembra Peak begins at 7 AM. It is organised every day if the conditions are favourable. Chembra Peak closing time is 5 PM, but you must reach there before 2 PM. No trekking permissions are issued after that.

Chembra Peak trek booking charges are ₹750 for a group of 10 (or fewer) Indian nationals. If the group exceeds 10 people, ₹75 is charged for each extra person. The fee includes the trekking permit and the services of a trekking guide.

For foreigners, Chembra Peak ticket rate is ₹1500 for a group of 5 people. ₹300 is charged for each extra person.

Along with the trekking charges, you also have to pay ₹20 as entrance fee and ₹40 as camera fee. Those charges apply to Indian nationals. Foreign nationals need to pay ₹30 as entrance fee and ₹80 as camera fee. For students, Chembra Peak entry fee is only ₹15.

Best time to visit chembra peak.

Therefore, the best season for the trek is during winter, after the monsoon. From December to February, the weather of Chembra Peak is cool, and the environment has a fresh green cover.

Also, it is best to start the trek early in the morning. You can thus enjoy your trek your way up to the peak in the cool dewy air.

Time to explore Chembra Peak Wayanad

It takes around 5-6 hours to complete Chembra Peak trek at a comfortable pace. It will take about an hour, on foot, to reach the watchtower. And from there, it is another 2-hour trek to the heart lake, through the tea plantations, forests and meadows. There, you can rest for an hour or walk around enjoying the views, before tracing your steps back.

When anyone from Bangalore wants to go on a weekend getaway there are a varied list of hill stations to choose from. One among them is Wayanad—a gorgeous district bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. With growing interest of people in travelling, it has become quite difficult to actually find some peace and quiet. Trekking, however, still has its charm left. Struggling to walk uphill, carrying your baggage and reaching the peak gives a satisfaction which is inexplicable.

One such trek is the Chembra peak. Mostly famous for the heart-shaped lake at a high altitude. It is moderately difficult, can be attempted by beginners and completed in one day. Read on to know the itinerary of the trek.

Getting there

The only airport that lies in the vicinity of Wayanad is Karipur international airport at Kozhikode. It is about a 100 km away. One will have to take a cab from the airport to Wayanad.

Regular private buses run from Bangalore to Wayanad district. Get down at the Kalpetta New Bus stand, which is 20 km away.

As there are no direct trains to Wayanad from Bangalore so one will have to take a train to Chamarajapuram from Bangalore, then take a taxi from Chamarajapuram to Wayanad. You can also drive down in your private vehicle from Bangalore via Mysore-Gundlupet-Bandipur-Wayanad.

No buses run from Kalpetta to the base of Chembra. Hence you will have to hire a rickshaw or rent a vehicle for the day. Chembra Peak VSS Trekking Ticket Office (use google maps) is where you will have to reach. From Kalpetta, Meppady is 13 km to the south. From Meppady follow the route towards the Ticket office. Chembra estate is where you can park your vehicle.

Prior permission must be taken to trek Chembra peak. Chembra Peak VSS Trekking Ticket Office is where one will get the tickets. The office opens at 7.00 am and permits are given only between 7.00 am to 12.00 pm. Cost of the permit for a group of 10 is Rs 500 for Indians and Rs 1000 for foreigners. Vythiri tea Garden Retreat is a splendid low budget stay. It is surrounded by tea estate and is at a walk-able distance from the main road.

Distance from Bangalore: 350 km by road

Trek distance: 4.5 km (one way)

Time to summit: 4-5 hours (one way)

Best time to trek: Throughout the year except for peak monsoon

Overnight Camping: Not allowed

Chembra is the highest peak in Wayanad with an elevation of 2,100 metres. It is one such peak that is visible from almost all points in Wayanad. The foot of the hill is spread with coffee and tea plantations. The initial walk amidst tall trees gives you enough shade. A kilometre walk from the trek starting point is the watch tower. Walk 2 km further and you will reach the heart-shaped lake. Until this point, the walk is easy. It gets difficult from here for the next 1.5 km climb to the peak. The view from the peak is spectacular and, if you're lucky, on a bright day you can see the towns below.

This peak's grandeur and splendour make it a popular destination for daring trips. Chembra Peak gives a beautiful backdrop and photo op for people who don't want to climb it, and it makes you fall in love with the surrounding landscape.

Chembra Peak Trek

The hike to Chembra Peak in Wayanad is widely regarded as the best that Kerala has to offer, and the offer is unquestionably excellent. The District Tourism Promotion Council, in collaboration with the South Wayanad Forest Development Agency, has put in place the required arrangements to facilitate trekking in Wayanad to the captivating peak.

The walk begins at the foothill of the Chembra peak, which is surrounded by a vast landscape of tea estates. The climb continues for another 1 km until you reach a watchtower with views of the Chembra peak and its surrounds. After another 2 kilometres, you will reach Hridayathadakam Lake, a heart-shaped lake. You can relax and enjoy the cool water by spending some time near this lake. After another 1 km of hiking from the lake, you will arrive at Chembra Peak. Overall, each side is a 4.5-kilometre ascent that takes between 3 and 4 hours to complete.

The walk is moderately arduous until the second stage, which takes you to the heart-shaped lake. The difficulty increases slightly beyond this point until you reach the peak since the trail grows steeper. Nature playfully blows gentle winds to invigorate and refresh you as you walk through the woodland. The cracking of dry leaves beneath your feet, the thin shafts of sunlight filtering through the thick branches, the joyous chattering of birds, and the faint sounds of beetles in the background will make you fall in love with nature all over again. Wading through the dense forests of the Wayanad Hill Range and discovering a pure and untouched environment is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

What to watch out for

  • A stunning heart-shaped lake

Midway up the Chembra peak is a lovely heart-shaped lake. Even in the summer, this lake is never dry. Even if there are overgrown grasses, the shape remains constant.

  • Trekking through tea plantations

From the forest office to the watchtower, you walk a few kilometres in this environment.

Take a walk through the lush green farms of Wayanad

  • Breathtaking view of Wayanad from the summit

The entire range of Wayanad can be seen from the summit of the Chembra mountain or the heart-shaped lake. Tea and coffee estates can be seen for miles on both sides.

Trekking to the top of the Chembra peak is prohibited due to the presence of wildlife .

Chembra Peak trekking time

The initial trek track takes 15 to 20 minutes from the starting point to the lookout tower. It takes 1 to 2 hours to walk from the watchtower to the heart-shaped lake. The trek from the heart-shaped lake to Chembra Peak takes another 1-2 hours.

How much do Chembra Peak permits and treks cost?

Permits must be obtained from the Meppadi forest office. Don't worry, the forest office is on the way to Chembra from Meppadi town. It's impossible to miss.

Chembra Peak Trek – Discovering a Heart Shaped Lake!

Umang Trivedi

  • October 25, 2023

chembra trek permit

I tried hard, squinted my eyes, but couldn’t see the top of Chembra peak.  Fluffy clouds were hiding the grandeur of Chembra peak. As the soft clouds glided swiftly along with a waft of wind, myriad patterns of nature unfolded in front of us. We had almost completed the trek. Another 30 minutes of trekking would help us discover a beautiful heart shaped lake enroute Chembra peak trek. We sat catching our breath back and glanced at the trek further. The climb, partially concealed by clouds, looked steep and daunting. But to marvel at the heart shaped lake, we rubbed off dirt and resumed the trek. Gradually, we reinstated our quest for nature and started trotting against the rough terrain and towards a phenomenal creation of nature! However, we would have to return from the lake as trekking upto the peak is not allowed anymore.

Chembra peak in Wayanad is one the most amazing treks one can opt for in South India. It doesn’t have the unpredictable terrain which is found in most of the rain forest treks in South India. Instead, Chembra peak is a perfect example of a trek which can provide rewarding views for anyone who is interested in nature, at a moderate effort.

Located at a distance of 13 KMs from Meppadi town, Chembra peak stands tall beyond the tea plantations and lush green landscapes. After you drive almost 10 KMs from Meppadi towards Chembra peak, you will reach a ticket counter. You have to buy tickets here in order to reach the heart shaped lake. The tickets include your guide fees, however, you wouldn’t require a guide to complete a trek as the path is marked clearly. But, paying these fees is mandatory.

Chembra Peak Wayanad

Many people start their trek from the ticket counter itself. However, if you have your own car, you can drive further ahead. After the point, till where you can drive your car, trek to heart shaped lake measures around 3 KMs. If you don’t feel like driving on the tough terrain, there are jeeps plying on the route, from the ticket counter to the end parking spot.

Chembra peak starts amidst tea plantations and gradually takes you in the damp forest and surreal surroundings. The initial leg of trek is easy as you trot on dry twigs, with bountiful views of tea plantations and valley on your right. After a while, you will find yourself amidst stalwart trees and filtered sunlight. The Chembra peak trek starts becoming a bit steep gradually. We continued the trek cautiously, making the grip on ground stronger with every step.

The trek begins to get a bit steep after this point (Chembra peak trek)

After we continued our trek for a while, we crossed the denser part of the forest and started ascending on a steeper part of the trek towards Chembra peak. The view behind us opened up and the valley which we saw earlier, looked even more gorgeous. With every step, we were inching closer towards the heart shape lake.

Further in the trek, we reached a point where clouds were almost at the same height as us. The clouds concealed the peaks around us but, Chembra peak stood tall, protruding above the clouds. However, the clouds gradually covered Chembra peak as well. We spent some time on this flat land before starting our last leg of Chembra peak trek.

Chembra Peak Wayanad

The last leg of trek towards Chembra peak lake

The trek further looked very steep. However, it took us lesser effort as compared to the previous trek. After cautiously navigating our way pass boulders, we finally reached the heart shaped lake. The lake looked beautiful as the gentle wind created ripples in the water. There were government employees keeping a watch on us to make sure that we don’t touch the water or take a dip in it. Known as “hridhayathadakam” in the local language, the heart shaped lake is a beautiful sight to marvel at. We hiked around the lake and discovered a cliff, hanging over a valley, allowing a gorgeous view of beautiful landscapes stretched till the horizon. We spent some time there, marveling at the nature’s beauty. The Chembra peak stood tall behind us as we stared in awe at the valley below.

After spending some time near the heart shaped lake, we started descending. There were chances of rain and we were supposed to trek down before the rains started. I was the last person to leave the spot as I tried to capture the best view of the heart shaped lake. But, the government officials were too strict to allow me trek a bit further. When I asked the reason why weren’t we allowed to trek till the top, I was given influence of Maoists as a reason. Well, it’s sad how politics can bar you from discovering nature! But, maybe this is just an excuse. The real reason may be saving an endangered bird species which is comparatively abundant near Chembra peak.

Finally, we returned back to the parking spot where our cars waited for us. On our way back, the sky was getting darker and the sun fainter. We were now heading back to our town, where a rainy evening waited for us!

You can read more about Wayanad on my blog. I have mentioned the other blog posts below.

Wayanad Itinerary

Places to visit in Wayanad

I have answered some questions which I think can arise while planning for Chembra peak trek.

Can I trek till the top of Chembra peak?

Earlier, the trek used to be till Chembra peak. But, now you can only trek till the heart shaped lake. Due to the influence of Maoists, the government has banned the trek till the top of Chembra peak. However, this seems to be just an excuse. The actual reason is most likely saving an endangered bird species which is abundant only near the Chembra Peak.

How to reach Chembra peak?

If you have a car, you can drive till the parking spot from where the trek starts. If you are relying on public transport, there are buses plying from Kalpetta to Meppady. From Meppady, you can get an auto rickshaw which will charge around Rs 200 for one way. You will hire the whole auto rickshaw for Rs 200 and not per person

Is camping allowed?

You can not camp near the heart shaped lake. It was allowed 4 years back, but camping is now banned. This ban is unfortunate as I would consider it a beautiful camping site!

How long and tough is the Chembra peak trek?

If you start the trek from the ticket counter, the trek is around 4 KMs (one way). But, if you start from the parking spot beyond the ticket counter, it’s a 3 KM (one way) trek. Considering the steepness of the trek, if would take you around 3 hours to complete the whole trek.

The grade of Chembra peak trek is easy – moderate. I saw some kids completing the trek! However, the trek becomes difficult in monsoon as the rains tend to make the path slippery.

Is there a permission required for Chembra peak trek?

Yes, you need a permit from the forest departments. But, you can get the same from ticket counter itself. You don’t need to get a permit from anywhere else in advance.

How much does Chembra peak trek cost?

For a group of 10 people, the trek would cost Rs 750. For every additional member, Rs 75 more has to be paid. Carrying a camera would cost Rs 40. For foreigners, the cost would be double.

You might have read elsewhere that the trek costs Rs 500 for 10 people. However, this has been revised and the cost is Rs 750 for 10 people as of 15th April, 2016.

What are the timings for Chembra peak trek?

The forest department office, which issues permits and tickets, open at 7 am. You can start trekking once you have the tickets. The tickets are issued till 2 pm. However, you might have to leave the heart shaped lake by 3 pm, if there are chances of rain. The government officials would not allow you to stay there. So, it’s best recommended that you start the trekking latest by 10 am as rains are considered to be frequent in the evening time.

Is carrying plastic bottle allowed?

Yes, carrying plastic bottle is allowed. However, you will have to give Rs 20 per bottle as deposit, which is refundable once you complete the trek and show the bottle. This impressive step has been taken to keep the Chembra peak zone plastic free.

Is smoking/drinking allowed?

Smoking and drinking is strictly not allowed in the Chembra peak zone. In fact, there is a hefty fine, around Rs 5,000, if you are caught smoking or drinking

Is spotting wild life possible?

You might spot wild life. But, because there are many trekkers frequenting the place, the chances of spotting wild life is minimal.

Is there a guide required for Chembra peak trek?

Actually, there is no guide required for the Chembra peak trek. It is a clearly marked trek and you have other fellow trekkers along with you. However, a guide is compulsory and his cost is included in the ticket cost.

Is high level of fitness required for the trek?

The trek is pretty moderate and a basic level of fitness would suffice to complete the trek.

Which is the best season for the trek?

September – February might be the best season. March, April & May tend to be a bit hot. But, if you are lucky, you can discover the day to be cloudy. June, July & August are monsoon months which would make the trek slippery. However, the landscapes are lush green and amazingly beautiful.

I hope you liked the blog post and found it to be useful. If I have not covered your question, share it in the comment section.

Best Time to Plan Chembra Peak Trek

The picturesque beauty is enhanced by the blossoming flora and abundant greenery, making this the perfect place for trekking. Particularly well-liked are the months of October and November, which provide the ideal ratio of pleasant temperatures to striking scenery. The monsoon season (June to August) must be avoided, as heavy rains can make the trails treacherous and difficult to navigate. Planning the trek a few months prior to visiting is recommended as it ensures a safer and more enjoyable experience.
