Eighty years after Premier Travel arrived in Cambridge as a coach company,  the agency is still at the heart of the historic city. Benjamin Coren visited.

As an iconic cathedral city, Cambridge has a busy town centre with high footfall. The only problem for a travel agency is that much of that is made up of incoming tourists.

So the team at Premier Travel, which has had a presence in Cambridge for 80 years, rely on their customer service to keep clients coming back time and again.

That level of service is evidenced no more obviously than at the back of the shop where the team proudly displays a number of awards the branch has received for outstanding customer service from the Cambridge Business Improvement District.

“The shop windows play an important part in a location with high footfall”, said branch manager Amanda Aldridge, who joined Premier 27 years ago at a different location in Cambridge. She returned to the 21-shop East Anglia miniple’s Cambridge branch, which has been in its current location for six years, after a spell at its shop in nearby Ely.

Independence wins customers

The freedom, as an independent agency and Worldchoice member of The Travel Network Group, to offer customers “that extra personal service” is what Aldridge puts her, and her team’s, loyalty down to.

“You feel part of that family,” she said. “More than half the staff have been with the company for 10 years or more. We are very well looked after, it’s not like in a big company where you don’t ever see upper management and you aren’t made to feel special.”

There is a mutual loyalty from many repeat customers, according to Aldridge, who said that is driven by virtue of the agency being independent and able to choose which suppliers they work with – Premier Holidays, the tour operator owned by the same parent company, is used but there is no pressure to choose it ahead of others.

“Because we are family-run we have the freedom to work with a wide range of operators,” she said. “Providing the organisations we work with are Abta bonded, we will book with them.”

Getting the right holiday for the customer is paramount, so Premier has a feature on its system that tells agents where everyone in the company has been – so they can contact them for their expertise of destinations. This year, Croatia, southern Italy, Majorca, South Africa and Florida are popular destinations.

The personal touch is also important. “We will do as much as we can for our customers,” Aldridge said. “Including getting customers’ boarding passes, and checking them in to flights. We take the pressure off them.”

Staff are encouraged to progress within Premier. Aldridge recently attended a leadership course, which she said “hugely helped me in managing the office” and has recently taken advantage of The Travel Network Group’s customer service workshops.

Drumming up new business

They also work hard to attract new business. One way is making the most of opportunities with customers coming in to use the bureau de change, managed by senior consultant Tracey Thornton – as well as taking to social media and forming commercial partnerships.

“We do competitions on Facebook and a lot of work within the local community,” said Aldridge. “We have a supporter’s partnership scheme with Cambridge United Football Club. We sponsor the hospitality suite and we hold monthly competitions so the winner can watch a game and go into the suite.

“We have also been up to meet the players and they do come in and talk to us, and we have even done bookings for [some of] them.”

The agency regularly participates in the annual Macmillan coffee mornings to raise funds for the Arthur Rank Hospice Charity, and sponsors an archway on the 5K Huntingdon Bubble Rush course, where participants run through bubbles to raise money for Children’s hospices in East Anglia.

The team also hosts client evenings, usually with a partner operator, but sometimes alongside a local business, to drum up custom.

Good teamwork and customer service at the branch, which has three full-time and four part-time staff, helps it keep its customers coming back. Maybe the tourists will start booking there next…

Ben’s Day at Premier Travel

Cambridge has a busy town centre and, although the bulk of the footfall is made up of tourists, the shop is buzzing with customers coming in to finalise their upcoming trips, make enquiries and make use of the in-branch bureau de change.

I was warmly welcomed by Amanda and her team. The bright, modern and tidy store was comfortable and there were smiles all around.

Two brochure walls flank the entrance with long haul and cruise on one side and short breaks, UK and Europe on the other, showing the breadth of product available.

The window displays show all the top offers to passers-by. The offer of the day comes through every morning from in-house operator Premier Holidays, but the branch is true to its independence by showcasing other operators too.

At the back of the shop is another brochure area and an area staff personal targets, with a wall of awards for the month’s top seller. The celebration of the agents’ achievements nicely sums up the branch’s friendly atmosphere.

Up close and personal

Favourite destination… I love Saint Lucia, it’s so beautiful, the hotels are lovely and there is so much to see and do.

If I weren’t a travel agent… I’d be a teacher. I’d applied to Lincoln University to do teacher training, but I deferred and came to Premier.

Best trip? Florida. A week with a small group.

How long have you worked for Premier? Five years. I previously worked at Going Places and was a Travel Counsellor.

If I weren’t a travel agent… I always fancied being a florist!

Memorable booking? A lady who had never flown longhaul. She went to Canada for three weeks on her dream trip.

How long have you been here? I’ve spent 30 years working for Premier Travel.

If I weren’t a travel agent… I would still do something customer-facing.

Best trip? An Australia fam. We did hot-air ballooning, white water rafting and diving.

Chrishall Village History

Premier travel of cambridge and the chrishall buses.

by Rosemarie Gant | Aug 3, 2015 | At Work , Village Centre | 11 comments

Click on this picture and in the larger version you will be able to see the top of a double-decker bus just appearing over the snow as it comes down Crawley End towards the green. Winter 1963.

Where Loveday Close now stands in the middle of the village was for many years a much more industrial looking area.  For it was here that first Weeden’s, then Premier Travel of Cambridge and finally Funston’s buses transported village inhabitants to the local market towns of Saffron Walden and Royston, and at times much further afield.  In the winter time the buses struggled up the Chrishall hills to bring their travellers home and in the summer they took them off for day trips to the sea.  Here is a flavour of the Chrishall bus story…

Chrishall Bus Depot

premier travel of cambridge book

F E Weeden began operations soon after the First World War, originally operating from Heydon under the banner “Heydon & District” and a chocolate and maroon livery.

Premier Travel operated in a blue livery and began life as the brainchild of 10 undergraduates at Cambridge University in the early 1930s and as a diversion from their studies. It flourished after The Second World War, partly through acquisition of other companies. Discussions with Weedon had commenced before the war and resumed in 1945 when a takeover was agreed in the May. (The tickets on the right are over 60 years old!). As well as the maintenance depot – suitable sites for such facilities were scarce and expensive in Cambridge – Premier acquired some 7 vehicles and of course the valuable licences to operate routes between Chrishall and Bishop’s Stortford, Saffron Walden , Royston and Cambridge via Sawston. In summer, the Saffron Walden service went on to Clacton! There was also a London express service (via Clavering) to London Finsbury park.

The takeover of Drayton’s Motor Services of Barley was agreed in September 1947. This company operated in a dark blue and cream livery and offered similar services to Weeden’s – including another London express. This latter service started from Chrishall and went via Barley and Barkway whereas the Weeden service via Clavering started from Heydon – with the result that both services passed each other on Friday mornings going in opposite directions! Private car ownership during the 1950s was still the exception and the acquisition of Draytons established Premier as the main operator on the Royston – Chrishall- Saffron Walden axis. The Drayton family continued to own the Barley premises which they still operate as a motor garage and filling station serving the local community.

Chrishall was effectively a travel hub for these routes and after 1974 also provided maintenance facilities but its remote location had its disadvantges: in the severe winter of 1962 -63 no less than 16 buses had to be abandoned on one single day after getting stuck in snow drifts up to 6ft deep and passengers had to be led to safety on foot.  (See one who did make it home above.)

In the early 1970,s I worked wih Premier Travel, based at Haverhill depot. I drove various buses/coaches on Service 59 Haverhill to Audley End rail station, service 44 to Cambridge and express service Clacton to Blackpool. I knew Mr Lainson quite well, he put me forward for a Member of the Chartered Institute of Transport. I was headhunted by Don’s of Dunmow becoming a tours driver from Essex and Cambridge to various parts of the Scottish Highlands. I am now retired living in Somerset.

Rosemarie Gant

That’s lovely Ray – thank you for getting in touch. Oliver’s shop must have been next door to the Chrishall bus depot at that time. I know at one point the bus drivers would go in there for their breaks. Was it like that when you were there or was that room on the left of the shop turned into the Post Office by then?

Mac Law

My family (Law family) were very much involved with the Weedon and Premier Travel companies in the village. My father joined Freddie Weedon in 1937 as a driver, travelling wherever he was sent, including all the local services, seaside trips and private hires.

During the war years, he was doing troop transporting all over the UK, rarely coming home for weeks. After the war when Premier Travel took over, the rest of the Law family joined including my mother Edna as a conductress, also my Auntie Mary, her husband Sid, with his brother Sam. Sid was a mechanic and Sam a driver on local services.

As my parents lived in Heydon, I as a child spent a great deal of my life in Chrishall and most days would visit Doug Oliver’s shop next door to the garage, to buy sweets and a bottle of corona.

My family (Law family) were heavily involved with Weedon’s and Premier Travel at Chrishall garage. My father joined Freddy Weedon in 1937 driving his buses on local services, trips to the seaside and London, plus all over the UK. During the war years he was involved with troop transportation countrywide and was away from home for many months at a time. At the end of the war when Premier Travel took over he was joined by the rest of the Law family including my mother Edna, my Aunt Mary and her husband Sid who was a mechanic and his brother Sam who did local work, mainly on the double deckers. Edna and Mary were conductresses. I, as a young lad, spent much of my younger years in Chrishall and most days bought refreshments from Doug Oliver’s shop next to the garage. I could always be found jumping on and off the buses whilst they were parked in the garage yard.

These are lovely memories – thank you so much for adding these.

Terry Knights

I joined Premier Travel as Frank Grice’s assistant in about 1960. My wage was £3 wp. I had various tasks, hiring relief coaches. We were always under pressure as the firm was financing it’s other branches, airport and travel agency. I knew Mac Law well, Chuffer and many others. I left in 1967, joining the police where I did 30 yrs. l now live in Stamford, having of course retired. I will never forget those times.

Peter Musker

Well remember this company for a very memorable trip I had booked the family, 2 adults and three children to go from Ashby de la Zouch to Chester on I think a Clacton to Liverpool service. On arrival the coach was full and the driver was non-plussed as he had no pickup instruction for Ashby. He acknowledged the tickets were correct and admitted us, standing to Burton on Trent where a couple of folks got off and we grabbed their seats before the passengers from there got on! So it progressed until we reached Chester with passengers performing musical chairs all the way! We still chuckle about it.

Richard Warham

Does anyone recall the Leyland double decker OCK 205? Presumably one of those sold off in 1972. In 1972 ten of of us used it to travel from Stockport round Scotland. We were officially the first double decker bus on Skye. Interesting getting on the ferry and up the west coast single track roads long before the 500 route. No idea what happened to it after we got back.

Ken Worland

Hi Richard, have just found this site, and your comments regarding OCK 205. I worked on Premier Travel straight from leaving school in 1972 and until Easter 1983, with my first year being at Chrishall depot in the Traffic Office with Frank Grice and Trevor Williams, Heather Bernardini and Maisie Francis. I well remember Olivers shop, and their son was actually a teacher at Chesterton Boys School during my time at that establishment from 1967 to 1972.The bus you remember was actually DCK 205, and one of a batch purchased from Ribble. It was, indeed, one of those stood down in 1972, when they were replaced by former Oxford AEC Bridgemasters. Of interest another of the same Leyland batch DCK 219 has been restored (sadly in Ribble livery). Hope this is of interest, and keep up the good work. Best Wishes Ken Worland

Peter’ Clay

I spent many hours on the old Premiere Travel double decker from RAF Duxford to Cambridge from 1958-1961 when I was stationed there. Sometimes we had to push start the blasted thing moving it out of the oil dripping from the engine. Great times though never to be forgotten. Many a drunken Friday or Saturday night leaving Cambridge on the old girl well over loaded especially upstairs. I have known the buses for years as I lived in Westmill not far from the buses main operating base in Chrishall.

Ha – sounds like some great memories there Peter!

Cambridge Branch Manager

Tell us about your travel background:

“I started at Premier Travel’s Rose Crescent branch in 1992, then moved over to the Ely branch before becoming assistant manager of our Addenbrookes branch. I then moved back to Rose Crescent (now Sidney Street) where I’ve been assistant manager since 2013.”

What do you love about working in the travel industry?

“Every day is different and you learn something new every day too. I love talking to clients and working out what they want, and when they come back; seeing that they’ve enjoyed it and hearing about their trip. The challenge of arranging each holiday keeps it varied and there’s always something different happening.”

Where have you travelled to?

Mainland Spain, Switzerland, Austria, France, Canary Islands, Cyprus, Malta, the Balearic islands, mainland Italy; Sorrento, Lake Garda, the Channel Islands, Florida, New York and St Lucia.

Where are you off to next?

“Thorpeness & Aldeburgh; it’s lovely and peaceful and not your traditional bucket and spade break. It’s lovely and restful for a holiday.”

Favourite holiday destination?

“Nerja on the Costa del Sol in Spain – I love it there and go back every year. It’s a lovely small town with lots of cobbled streets and quaint shops, lots of nice places to explore and great places to eat! I also loved St Lucia for the beautiful beaches and amazing scenery – plus they have lots of lovely fish restaurants to eat at too.”

Book with me because….

“I’ll find out what your requirements are and what sort of thing you’ve done before, so I have an idea of where may suit you for your next holiday. I’ll ask a lot of questions in the beginning to make the process a lot smoother throughout the later booking stages.”

Travel Bucket list:

“I want to visit my friends in Seattle next year and then also visit other friends in Australia later on too. I’d also love to go back to the Caribbean again, but maybe to Barbados this time to try somewhere new. The beaches look beautiful there!”

Favourite travel memory:

“Everything about St Lucia… We cruised around the island on a catamaran which was a beautiful experience – the sun was shining, the weather was hot and the waters were clear turquoise. You could see the Piton mountains as we sailed around, which were breath taking.”

Top Travel Tip:

“Book early to get the best deal; depending on the type of holiday you want, there are lots of advantages to securing your holiday in advance. You can pay off the balance gradually and you’ll also have the first choice of accommodation, room type, airline etc.”

Never travel without…

“My iPad – it’s multi-functional and extremely useful, I use it if I need to double check my flight time en route to the airport or if I need to look back over my documents whilst away. Plus the camera is great too.”

Premier Travel has expanded its retail business in Cambridgeshire with the opening of a new travel outlet in Cambourne.

The independent travel company has unveiled an offshoot of its travel agency branches at its headquarters in Cambourne Business Park.

A section of the firm’s head office has been turned into an area where customers can pop in to browse through brochures, make holiday enquiries, book holidays and short breaks, and buy travel money.

Paul Waters, Premier Travel director, said: “We are delighted to open a new travel venture in Cambourne. Local people will be able to access the same services and products offered at all our branches in East Anglia.

“We decided to roll out our services into Cambourne due to demand from the local community. Since moving our head office to Cambourne in September, we’ve received many enquiries from residents and businesses interested in booking a holiday, so it made sense.”

Cambridge is a city in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, United States, in the Greater Boston area. It was named in honor of the University of Cambridge in England, a nexus of the Puritan theology embraced by the town's founders. Cambridge is home to two internationally prominent universities, Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The city, sometimes referred to as the " People's Republic of Cambridge ", now advertises itself as " a city where counter-culture still lives, classic culture thrives, and multicultural is a way of life ."
