Cruise Ducks: Tips, Rules & Everything You Need to Know

cruising ducks - cruising trend that will quack you up

Sharing is caring!

If you’re going on a cruise and have heard about cruise ducks, you might be wondering what its all about. Cruise ducks have been around for a few years and the fun trend is only becoming more popular!

While hiding cruise ducks is most well known on Carnival cruises , you’re likely to find cruising ducks on Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Disney and other popular cruise lines.

I’ve been cruising for about 20 years, and first heard about cruise ducks about 5 years ago. Since that time we’ve found cruising ducks on several cruise ships. On a recent Princess cruise, we finally decided to join in on the fun and participate in the cruise ducks trend.

In this post I go over everything you need to know about cruising ducks, from it’s origins to how you play the game.

What Are Cruise Ducks?

cruising ducks

Cruise ducks are small plastic or rubber ducks that cruise passengers hide in different areas of the cruise ship. You can buy traditional yellow rubber ducks or show off your personality with fun themed ducks.

Some cute ducks I’ve seen include sports themed ducks like hockey or baseball, holiday ducks for both Christmas and Halloween, Princess ducks, and more.

Some people create their own ducks by knitting or crocheting them, while others have been creating home made keychains. It’s pretty incredible to see how creative people are getting with this cruise trend.

However, this isn’t the whole story. Cruising ducks is actually a fun game, with a few rules to follow if you decide to bring cruising ducks on your cruise vacation.

The Cruising Duck Game

Cruise-ducks

The cruising duck game is similar to a game of hide and seek. People hide ducks on a cruise, and other cruisers look for the ducks. Sometimes this is referred to as Duck Hunting (in the sweetest way).

Once people find a cruise duck, they’ll often post a picture of it in a Cruising Duck Facebook page or use the hashtag #cruisingducks and post to Instagram.

Cruising Duck Game Rules

Are you wondering how to play? The cruise ducks game is simple, but there are actually rules to follow and a few things to know.

1. Buy or create ducks to hide

You can buy small rubber on Amazon and in party stores. These days you can even find cruise duck sets which include novelty ducks, tags and ties.

2. Label your ducks

Label your ducks with the following information:

  • name (can be family name)
  • cruise ship

As an example “Smith family – Carnival Mardi Gras – April 1, 2023)

3. Print out cruise duck tags

It’s fun to put your information on cruise duck tags or “passports”. Some people use stickers and place these right on the bottom of the duck, or may even label with a permanent marker.

4. Keep or Hide, You Decide

The cruising ducks game is really just meant for fun, so an important element is to use the message “Keep or Hide, You Decide” on the cruise duck tag.

It’s ok to search for cruise ducks and keep them, or to rehide some to continue the fun.

5. No hiding cruise ducks in shops, pools or hot tubs

Cruise lines don’t mind cruisers bringing the novelty ducks onboard. However, there is a rule that cruise ducks can’t be hidden in shops, pools and hot tubs.

6. Cruise ducks should never go into the ocean

Remember that you don’t want any ducks to go into the ocean, so never hide them on outer railings or anywhere where a gust of wind can blow them off the ship.

7. Post to social media (optional)

It’s fun for people who hide cruising ducks to see that they’re found, and they may include an instruction to post a photo to a cruising duck facebook page or to use a hashtag #cruisingducks. However, posting a photo of your cruise duck isn’t mandatory.

What is the Story Behind Cruising Ducks?

Cruising-ducks

According to everything I have read, the popular cruising duck trend was started by a young girl named Abby Davis in March 2018. Abby and her father Ashley Davis, went on a 7 day Carnival cruise and brought 50 ducks to hide during their Caribbean cruise.

Their purpose was just to play a fun game and make people smile – and did they ever!

Since that time, they started the Facebook group, Cruising Ducks – Original Group, which now has over 180,000 members. According to Abby’s dad Ashley, they never thought the group would get this big and that this “kindness project” would catch on as it has.

Cruising Ducks Communities

There are several Facebook groups, including the Original Cruising Ducks group, where you can get ideas and be inspired, as well as ask all the cruising duck questions you could think of.

In cruise duck facebook groups, people will post photos of their cruise ducks, tags and passports as they get ready for their upcoming cruise.

Cruisers who’ve found ducks onboard cruises post their photos as well.

What To Do if You Find a Cruising Duck

Cruising Ducks found on cruise ship 6 x 4 (1)

If you find a cruising duck on a cruise ship, it will usually have an instruction to “keep or hide, you decide” and a call to action asking you to post a photo within the Facebook group, if possible.

Some people decide to keep the cruising duck, while others may choose to hide it to pass on some fun to another cruise passenger or crew member.

You could even take the new found duck friend on your next cruise, and post about his voyage and how far he’s traveled.

Something to remember if you do embark on hiding ducks on your next cruise, is that you may never know who found your duck (although you might). Even so, your special duck probably brought a smile to someone and could mean more than you know.

“This group is a community kindness project” , says the admin message on Cruising Ducks Original Group.

Remember that not everyone has internet while cruising or social media (Facebook or Instagram).

How to Create Your Own Cruising Ducks

crochet cruising ducks

There are ways to create your own ducks. For instance, some people crochet or knit their cruising ducks. I’m amazed at the talent of Natali Sholes Young and her daughter, who crocheted some their cruising ducks to give away!

Some Cruising Ducks have a Story

One thing that I noticed, and that frankly surprised me as I researched this trendy activity, is that many people shared ducks that had an extra special meaning.

Some ducks were tagged in memory of someone special who had a love of life, but has sadly passed on. Other people shared ducks that had a beautiful message for Autism awareness or another worthy cause.

Natali, a first time participant, kindly shared the story of her special ducks (seen above). Half of her ducks will be tagged for breast cancer awareness and the other half for Type 1 diabetes, since she is sailing during the months of awareness for these diseases and they are important to her.

She says “I’m here to spread awareness with a whole lot of fun and smiles!!”. Love it!!

My ducks are absolutely not in a row meme life well cruised

How to Attach the Tags on the Cruising Ducks

You can use colored rubber bands to attach the tags to the necks of the rubber ducks, twine or some curling ribbon.

I recently saw this idea posted in a Cruising Duck Facebook Group. This fun duck themed ribbon is great for tying duck tags or passports on to your cruise duck.

Cruise Ducks Frequently Asked Questions

What size ducks should i order.

Most people seem to like the 2 inch size, although some buy bigger and some buy smaller. Do be careful with buying ducks that are very small as these could be a choking hazard for young children

Can cruising ducks not be ducks?

I can’t believe I wrote that, but you probably know what I mean. Rubber “duckies” come in different animal forms and creations.

It seems that there are various answers to this question, depending on which Cruise Duck Facebook Group you join.

Some say anything goes, after all it’s all in good fun. Others say ducks only. Personally, I don’t see an issue with having other similar novelty toys.

Will the cruise ship’s crew throw the ducks away?

Most cruise lines have made their crew aware of cruise ducks, and most crew members say they enjoy it. Early on, some reported that crew would throw away the ducks, but this doesn’t seem to be an issue now.

Crew may even enjoy the fun of receiving one from a guest . Some crew say they bring a couple home to their children when they finish their contract.

Carnival Cruise Line, where this trend is extremely popular has truly embraced it. John Heald, brand ambassador for Carnival has said that crew have been made aware of the cruising duck phenomenon and won’t be throwing away ducks.

Is there sample wording for my cruising duck tags?

Here are some ideas….

“ConQUACKtulations!”

“Oh what luck, you’ve found a duck. Keep or hide, you decide”

Don’t forget to let people know where your cruising duck came from, the ship and sail date and where they can share it/post it on social media should they want to (your cruise duck Facebook group of choice).

Many more ideas are posted with Cruising Duck Facebook communities, so definitely check the out.

I’ve scrolled through a few and have seen so any great ideas for ducks and tags. If you like the passport printable shown in the above photo, Dee has kindly created a printable which is available in the Cruising Ducks – Original Group Facebook community.

Cruising Duck Facebook Groups

There are a few Facebook Groups dedicated to the fun activity of hiding and finding ducks. They’re a place to connect with other cruisers, get ideas and see the ducks that are being prepared for upcoming cruises, as well as the photos posted of ducks that are found on board.

The nice thing about these groups is to be able to chat about cruising ducks and ask questions to other people who are really into this.

Check out the files section for resources like templates you can print out, and events where others in the group may be cruising with you. It’s similar to a cruise roll call .

I couldn’t help but notice that beyond these adorable rubber ducks, there are tons of other stuff all dedicated in some way to Cruising Ducks. I’ve seen people posting duck socks, duck ties, and duck t-shirts.

Some have pretty cute sayings that I got a kick out of, including shirts that said “Duck, Duck, Cruise “ . If you played this game as a kid, you might find it amusing too. You can find a wide array of t-shirts and other duck related stuff on Amazon .

Actually placing ducks on cruise-ships in nothing new. It was bsically started back in 2010 on a Royal Caribbean cruise when a group of women from Massapequa High School, N.Y, class of 74, placed over 250 ducks around the Freedom of the Seas as part of a scavenger hunt with clues supplied of the various locations where the ducks were hidden. One duck had a special note on it giving away a free cruise for two to the finder of the duck. That scavenger hunt continued on various cruises by this same group up to 2016 when the group stopped doing their yearly reunion on cruises. My mom was part of that group and kept the three ducks she located as keepsakes and mementos of those trips. Other high school reunion groups had heard about what MHS was doing and they started hiding their own ducks throughout the years.

The power of social media is probably the cause of this recent explosion of the cruising duck phenomenon where now thousands upon thousands of people are now hiding ducks on cruise ships all over the world. With the promotion on Facebook by “Cruising Ducks”, they have taken this to a whole new level.

People are becoming more creative with their ducks. Some even hand making crocheted ducks. It’s now become a fun thing to do with the kids prior to the family cruise and even more fun when the kids find the ducks while on the cruise.

Will be interesting to see how long this game will continue. Carnival has embraced the game while some other cruise-lines go along with it. Personally I hope it continues to grow.

I will be taking my next cruise in February 2021 and I will be bringing my ducks to hide. That’s for sure!!

Wow Rhonda! I had no idea this Cruising Ducks phenomenon had such history! It’s definitely a fun and lighthearted, and as you mentioned, creative activity and I agree with your sentiments.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a comment.

Found my first duck Dec. 2019. I love the Facebook group, the positivity helped through 2020. We all look forward to cruising again. National Rubber Ducky day was yesterday, it’s held annually in order of Sesame Street Rubber Ducky, whose birthday is Jan. 13.

Thanks for sharing that Shantelle. I wish we were cruising this year so we could celebrate the special day on a cruise. Hopefully next year!

We will have a blast watching people look and find one for yourself. My grown daughter has collected them for her whole life. Thanks for a spark in our life. Daisy Robinson

I’m so sorry for your loss. It sounds like this cruise with you and your mom will be both fun and meaningful for you both. I hope you have an amazing time and these cruise ducks bring joy to you and others on your upcoming cruise.

My adult daughter and I have been cruising since 2011 when I started selling cruises at the travel agency where I work. She found her first cruise duck on the Panorama November 2021, which was her 31st birthday cruise, after the 2020 30th birthday cruise was cancelled. She was curious, as we knew nothing about them. Neither of us facebook. On our Bermuda cruise May 2022, she found another one and was thrilled. She went on a cruise in July with a friend (her first cruise) and her friend found one! My daughter told her about them and they were both so excited. We are planning on taking ducks to hide on our next cruise. We are having fun shopping for them, so far we have bought mermaid and unicorn ducks, just deciding about tags or stickers. Will be on Carnival Celebration in April 2023 and will have fun just hiding them this time. Finding another one would be a bonus! Thank you for your info, it was definitely beneficial.

This is great! Thanks for sharing and have an amazing cruise!

I love this post! It’s ‘lightbulb time’!!

The YMCA I belong to has a ‘Trunk or Treat’ the Saturday night before Halloween. Since my cruise starts 2 days later, Monday the day before Halloween, I’m going to order a BUNCH of ducks to give away to the kids and special needs young folks at the Y, and bring the rest onboard the cruise!!!

What the duck? Why people hide these kiddie toys on cruises ā€” and how you can, too

Ashley Kosciolek

On many a cruise, rubber ducks can be found peeking out from random hiding places, beckoning passengers to pick them up and read their accompanying information tags. Perhaps you'll find one hidden behind a plant by the Doe Family from Springfield or another carefully placed somewhere in the buffet by the Smiths from Greenville.

What the duck, you might be wondering, is the deal with hiding ducks on cruise ships?

As an avid duck hider, let me clue you in to this popular onboard pastime. Whether you're ready to hide ducks on cruises or want to send your kids on a hunt for cruise ducks, you'll need to get your own ducks in a row before you set sail.

Cruise ship rubber ducks, explained

cruise duck rules

Cruisers often bring rubber ducks on cruises in an effort to have a bit of fun by hiding them throughout the ship. The ducks usually have information cards attached to them bearing the names of the people who hid them and where those passengers are from.

What began in 2018 as a cute gesture by a 10-year-old girl named Abby ā€” who simply wanted to make other passengers smile ā€” now spans several Facebook groups with hundreds of thousands of members. In these groups, cruisers chat about the ducks they've ordered, the best places to purchase them, clever places to hide them after they've set sail and the best ways to attach the information tags.

The largest group I've been able to find ā€” yes, I'm a member ā€” is " Cruising Ducks - Original ," which encourages people to share photos of the ducks they plan to hide as well as ducks they've found on board. Think of it a bit like geocaching, but simpler ā€” and with ducks.

What to do if you find cruise ship ducks

cruise duck rules

If you find a duck, the next step is simple. Take a photo of yourself with the duck you've found and post it to the "Cruising Ducks - Original" Facebook group. Mention the name of the person who hid it. You might also choose to reach out to thank them if they have provided contact information on the card attached to the duck.

Then, either keep your new friend to take home with you as a souvenir or re-hide it according to the below rules.

Rules for hiding ducks on a cruise

cruise duck rules

It might sound silly, but there are rules for hiding rubber ducks on cruises. The first is that you should never put it in a pool or hot tub. You wouldn't want an excited child or inebriated passenger to fall in and drown or hurt themselves while attempting to fetch it.

Second, don't hide ducks in any of the onboard shops. If someone finds one hidden there and tries to take it with them, it could appear as though they're stealing something.

Third, don't place ducks where they might fall overboard. It's a huge no-no to toss anything into the ocean, even by accident.

When choosing ducks, the sky is the limit. I've seen everything from mini-ducks to giant ones that are a foot tall. You can find simple, classic yellow ducks in bulk online or you can choose to go all-out and purchase custom ones in a color or design that suits your personality. You might also choose to order plain ones and decorate them yourself with feathers, glitter or paint. Really, anything goes in terms of theme.

Some participants even choose to vary it a bit by hiding other duck-themed toys or objects, such as duck keychains, hand-crocheted ducks, duck-shaped Hot Wheels cars or small LEGO duck kits.

On a couple of my recent sailings, I won some inexpensive mini-ducks by playing a claw game in the arcade, and I used spare hair ties to attach my business card to them. It was a last-minute improvisation, but boy was it fun. Hiding them also kept the young daughter of one of my travel companions busy for an afternoon.

cruise duck rules

(Inspired by that experience, the cruise team here at The Points Guy got creative and had some specialty captain ducks made for the team to hide on upcoming cruises.)

For the tags, make sure to include your name and where you're from, along with instructions for the people who find your little quackers. Standard wording is generally something like this:

"Oh, what luck. You found a duck! Keep or hide, you decide. You found a cruising duck hidden by [name] from [city, state, country]. Hide in public places only ā€” no pools, hot tubs or stores. Take a photo, and post it in the Facebook group 'Cruising Ducks - Original.'"

At a minimum, the tag should tell the duck's finders that they can either keep or re-hide the duck and the places that are off-limits. It should also encourage them to share the ducks they find online. You can also choose to include additional information, such as a QR code or your e-mail address.

Bottom line

If you're hiding ducks, be sure to adhere to the rules. If you find a duck, whether you keep it or re-hide it, be sure to post a photo per the accompanying instructions.

Hiding rubber ducks on cruise ships is a fun way to connect with other passengers on your next sailing, as well as a fun pastime on sea days. Whether you find a duck and contact the folks who hid it or hide your own flock so others can reach out to you, it can help you to make new friends from all corners of the globe.

Cruise Ducks: A How-To Guide for Hiders and Seekers

Cruise Ducks have become a cruising trend on cruise ships over the past few years, sparking a playful hunt that fosters community and connection among cruisers.

Rubber ducks on the deck of a cruise ship, cruising through tranquil waters.

The concept is simple. Passengers purchase rubber ducks, customize them with mini tags, and discreetly hide them in spots around the cruise ship. Fellow cruisers then try to locate the ducks, take pictures, and often re-hide them for the next person to experience the fun.

Whether you’re new to the idea of Cruise Ducks or have questions about where to buy or hide them, we’ve got you covered in this ultimate cruise ship duck hunting guide.

Stick around!

What Is the Cruise Duck Phenomenon?

Rubber ducks adorning the deck of a cruise ship.

In case you’ve missed out on the cruise duck phenomenon, it’s pretty simple: Folks buy (or, if they’re creative, make) ducks, then hide them around the ship for others to find, enhancing the cruising experience.

Note: Jeep owners do the same thing and call it Jeep Ducking !

Sometimes, the ducks come with notes asking that their original owner be contacted or that, once found, a picture be posted in a specific Facebook group. In other cases, the ducks are decorated with the ship’s name and the sailing date, making them great souvenirs.

Whenever a duck is located, its finder must make a sometimes tough decision: Do they keep it for their collection or, after taking a picture and posting it wherever the tag asks, do they re-hide it for someone else to find?

I find it fascinating how such a small gesture can bring so much excitement to fellow cruisers. These adorable critters often come in various colors, designs, and sizes, making the hunt even more thrilling.

The main purpose of hiding and finding these ducks is to spread joy and foster a sense of community among passengers.

Most come with a tag attached to help differentiate cruise ducks from rubber ducks. The tag typically contains the name of the person who placed the duck, along with some basic instructions on what to do when one is found.

Here’s a typical format for cruise duck tags:

  • Name: John Doe (you can use your real name or a nickname)
  • Date Hidden: November 27, 2023
  • Message: “Congratulations on finding me! Please take a photo with me and post it on social media using the hashtag #CruiseDuck. Feel free to re-hide me so someone else can share the fun!”

A rubber duck sitting on top of a cruise passport.

I’ve seen creative ways to hide these distractions on a cruise ship ā€“ tucked in plants, perched on balcony railings, or even nestled in elevator corners.

That said, you must always prioritize the safety and cleanliness of the ship and its passengers. It’s crucial not to interfere with the ship’s property or operations while placing a cruise duck.

How Did Cruise Ducks Become a Sensation?

Rubber ducks with sunglasses on display in a store.

Although credit for the trend is given mainly to a 10-year-old girl named Abby, who hid about 50 ducks on the Carnival Breeze in the spring of 2018, references can be found to people playing hide-and-seek with the adorable plastic creatures as far back as 2015 on cruise vacations.

Abby’s adventure, however, seems to have kicked things into high gear and started a movement, the main purpose of which is simply to make other people smile.

It’s also been suggested that cruising ducks are a distant relative of the painted-rocks phenomenon, essentially a landlocked version of the same game.

Cruise ducks aren’t the only rubberized animals that find their way on board. While many different animals can be found, pigs are the second most popular variety, with flame-red devil ducks also showing strongly.

Types of Cruise Ducks: A Guide for Cruisers

A yellow rubber duck with the words ketchikan duck tour on it.

I have come across numerous themed ducks that make the entire experience more fun and engaging for cruise ship passengers. Let me share with you some of the most popular and creative variations that can be found on board a cruise ship.

Cruise ducks can be categorized into the following themes:

  • Origami ducks

Pirate-themed cruise ducks are a favorite among seafaring adventurers. Often adorned with eye patches, tiny pirate hats, and even miniature treasure maps, these delightful duckies bring an element of whimsy to any voyage.

A few pirate duck examples include:

  • Captain Quackbeard , complete with a felt beard
  • Buccaneer Duck , which sports a scarf and a gold earring
  • Pirate Parrot Duck , a clever twist with its parrot-inspired design

If you cruise during the holiday season, you might come across Christmas cruise ducks. These festive rubber ducks are often dressed up as Santa Claus, reindeer, or snowmen, and they can add a touch of holiday cheer to your journey.

My personal favorites include:

  • Santa Duck , with a little red hat and a white beard
  • Reinduck , featuring antlers and a bright red nose
  • Snow Duck , a small snowman in duck form, complete with a top hat

cruise ducks holiday ship

For those looking to celebrate Halloween on a cruise, themed ducks can be found sporting various spooky disguises.

These ducks may be available during October, and some examples are:

  • Dracula Duck , a vampire duck with a cape and fangs
  • Mummy Duck , wrapped in white gauze, like an ancient Egyptian
  • Witch Duck , often found in a green state, wearing a pointy hat

If you’re fortunate enough to enjoy an Easter cruise, watch for ducks dressed as bunnies or in other Easter-themed attire. Some of these adorable rubber ducks include:

  • Bunny Duc , donning bunny ears and a fluffy tail
  • Egg Painter Duck , featuring an artist’s palette and paintbrush
  • Spring Flower Duck , surrounded by colorful blossoms

Lastly, some enthusiasts enjoy creating origami ducks while on a cruise for a creative and artistic twist. Constructed from paper, these ducks are a beautiful, eco-friendly alternative to traditional rubber ducks.

Origami ducks come in various shapes and colors, each a small masterpiece. I have seen passengers leave behind their creations as tiny surprises for fellow cruisers to discover.

Where to Buy Cruise Ducks for Your Next Cruise

Rubber ducks enjoy swimming in a pool on a cruise ship.

When it comes to purchasing cruise ducks, people have different preferences and needs. Some like to decorate or hand paint each duck independently, while others (like me) would just buy a bulk order of them online for their next cruise.

As someone who spends too much time looking for the best cruise ducks, I can recommend and trust a few sources I have used.

Some popular online platforms which offer a variety of cruise ducks for sale are:

Getting Quacky With Cruise Duck Tag Ideas

cruise ducks in the anchor

A duck tag is essential for bringing your cruise duck to life and sending it on its journey. The tag gives your ducky its backstory and instructions so that each finder can participate in the fun.

You have to be creative with the details when coming up with duck tags. On that account, here are some ideas to help you come up with fun tags:

  • Pick a fun and quirky name like Captain Beaks, First Mate Feathers, or Quack Sparrow. Pirate-themed names are quite popular!
  • Share as many details as possible. Examples:  “Hatched in Honolulu,” “Aspires to win a belly flop context,” etc.
  • Next, you need to add a mini-bio. Examples: “This is my first cruise!” or “I’ve sailed 15 ships; collect me for your flock!”
  • This is the most fun step; giving wacky instructions! A couple of my favorites are “Take me on a spa day” and “Buy me a tiny paper umbrella drink”. For a romantic twist, you’ll want to go with something like “Take me on your next date” or “I’m looking for love; can you introduce me to other ducks?”.
  • For photos, ask to do fun poses like “Do the duck face with me!”
  • You can add to the fun by offering a “Duck Finder’s Reward” for returning the duck. The reward can be anything from a drink to a gift mailed home.

By getting clever with your cruise duck’s tag, you can really set their one-of-a-kind personality and give each finder excitement as they hunt for these hidden treasures. Let your imagination run wild!

The Community and Social Media Influence on Cruise Duck Tradition

A rubber duck sits on top of a wooden shelf.

Do you think this is just some silly little game played by children? Think again!

Numerous social media groups are devoted to cruising ducks, including the Cruising Ducks Facebook Page, which has over 230,000 members.

The page is also a great resource, especially for those looking for templates for the “Passports” many use to tag their ducks.

With platforms like Facebook and Instagram, enthusiasts have found a resourceful way to connect and share their passion for these adorable ducks.

One of the most popular ways my fellow cruisers engage with each other is through Facebook groups. These groups provide a platform for members to post pictures of their latest duck finds, share stories of their adventures, and offer helpful information about the best spots to search for ducks aboard cruise ships.

New and seasoned cruise duck enthusiasts can join these groups, participate in discussions, or ask questions.

Moreover, the use of hashtags plays a significant role in connecting people on a global level. By using the hashtag #cruisingducks, members can quickly discover content related to cruise ducks, exchange experiences, and follow the journeys of these cute collectibles.

In addition to the community-driven aspect of cruise ducks, the influence of social media has given rise to an elevated sense of purpose.

The act of hiding and finding cruise ducks has become more than a simple game. It has become a social cause, fostering an environment of kindness and happiness amongst passengers.

These factors contribute to the overall vitality of the cruise duck community on a personal and social level. The passion for cruise ducks spills over into social media, bringing enthusiasts together to celebrate their shared interests.

Not Everyone Loves Cruise Ducks

A rubber duck sitting on a table next to a note.

Of course, as we all know, every party has that notorious pooper. Perhaps not surprisingly, given how big the whole cruising duck phenomenon has become, this particular party has attracted several varieties of complainers on Facebook .

Some have never seen a duck on board a ship yet are still inexplicably perturbed by the notion. “If I ever see one of these stupid ducks everyone is talking about,” posted one such curmudgeon to Facebook, “Iā€™ll take it home, set it afire, and post a picture of that. Man, people are stupid.”

Others have gone so far as to suggest that rubber ducks should be banned aboard cruise ships, prompting one concerned traveler to ask Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, if this would happen on its ships.

He not only assured his Facebook followers that the ducks were welcome on board (“Hide them. Find them. Have fun with them,” he wrote) but assured would-be hiders that “most” of the crew members knew not to throw them away if they came across them.

Where to Hide Cruise Ducks on a Ship?

A group of rubber ducks sitting on a wooden floor.

As a seasoned cruise duck enthusiast, I’ve picked up a few tricks for hiding ducks cleverly and creatively onboard a cruise ship.

Hiding your little rubber friends can be an enjoyable challenge and an engaging game of hide-and-seek for passengers.

  • Lounging areas: There are often chairs, tables, and cozy corners where passengers can relax. Tuck a duck beneath a cushion or chair, or place one atop a stack of magazines for a pleasant surprise.
  • Pool decks: Hide your duck near the pool’s edge, the steps leading into the water, or under a sun lounger. Be sure to avoid putting your duck directly in the water since it could end up lost or floating away.
  • Stairwells and elevators: Try hiding a duck on a stair’s ledge, resting on a handrail, or peeking out from behind an elevator door.
  • Buffets and dining rooms: Placing a duck atop a pile of napkins or nestled against the centerpiece on a dining table can be a delightful treat for those enjoying a meal. However, be mindful of food safety and avoid direct contact with food items.
  • Cabin hallways: A hallway corner table or a small decorative shelf can serve as a perfect hiding spot, especially if your duck can peek out just enough to catch the eye of a passing passenger.
  • In your stateroom: Those wanting to leave a surprise for the next passengers occupying their stateroom have even put a duck or two in the cabin’s safe.

That’s not to say everyone gets creative when placing their plastic friends. Some wind up in places like elevator corners or stairwells, looking for all the world as if they were dropped instead of hidden.

(Note: Always check with your cruise line to make sure cruise ducks are allowed. Disney Cruise Line recently started cracking down on passengers bringing cruise ducks onboard .)

Tips for Finding Cruise Ducks on Your Cruise

I’ve learned that finding cruise ducks can be a fun activity during a sailing. The key to finding them is knowing where to look and how to approach the search.

Here are some valuable tips for finding cruise ducks I’ve discovered.

  • Check popular gathering spots on the ship: Ducks usually gather in specific areas on the cruise ship, such as the pools, garden areas, and open decks. These places tend to have water, plants, and a serene atmosphere that attracts ducks. Watch for them while walking around the ship and during your leisure time.
  • Look during early morning or late afternoon hours: Ducks are most active during the early morning and late afternoon hours. Explore the ship during these times for a higher chance of spotting them.
  • Talk to fellow cruisers and crew members: Don’t hesitate to ask fellow cruisers and crew members for tips on where to find cruise ducks. They can provide valuable insights and may know secret spots where the ducks hide.

A Few Rubber Ducks

Have you ever stumbled upon a hidden rubber duck while on a cruise and wondered what it’s all about? Welcome to the world of cruise ducks, a fun and popular trend that’s captured the hearts of cruisers in recent years.

What Are Cruise Ducks?

Cruise Ducks with Ship in Background

Cruise ducks are small rubber ducks that passengers buy and hide around the ship for others to find. Each duck is usually tagged with a note that might share where the duck came from or instructions for what to do upon finding it. It’s a fun, unspoken rule that once you find a duck, you can either keep it as a souvenir or re-hide it, allowing the fun to continue for others.

This activity transforms the cruise ship into a massive scavenger hunt without any clues, fostering a sense of surprise and community among passengers. Finders of these ducks typically share their discoveries on platforms like Instagram or specific Facebook groups, using hashtags like #CruisingDucks or #CruiseDucks. Some even take the ducks on their future cruises, documenting their travels and sharing the journey online.

At its core, cruise ducks serve as a way to add an extra layer of enjoyment and connection among cruise-goers. Whether leaving a duck hidden for the next person to find or sharing the joy on social media, it’s a fun tradition that fosters a sense of shared adventure and community. It’s a way for passengers to connect, share smiles, and create lasting memories, all through the simple act of hiding and seeking little rubber ducks.

How Cruise Ducks Became a Sensation

Cruise Ducks

Cruise ducks became a hit sensation thanks to Abby Davis, an 11-year-old girl who, in March 2018, took 50 rubber ducks on her cruise aboard the Carnival Breeze, departing from Galveston, Texas. Alongside her father, Ashley Davis, Abby hid 7 of these ducks every day throughout the duration of their voyage. This initiative led to the creation of a cruising ducks Facebook page. This group has since grown into a community of over 253,000 members who share the fun of hiding and finding ducks on cruise ships.

Interestingly, the idea of cruise ducks shares a connection with the painted-rocks craze, which is about hiding and finding decorated rocks. Both activities tap into the human instinct for exploration and the delight in uncovering hidden objects. Cruise ducks, much like the painted rocks craze, bring people together through the simple yet profound act of sharing hidden items.

Some cruisers recall finding rubber ducks on cruises as early as 2015. Although it wasnā€™t until Abby’s initiative in 2018 that the activity exploded in popularity. Since then, it has become a global phenomenon, with people from all corners of the world participating in the joyous pursuit of hiding and discovering these rubber ducks.

Rules for Hiding Cruise Ducks

Cruise Duck 2

Cruise ducks are a fun and popular activity where passengers hide rubber ducks around the ship for others to find. To participate, you can get special duck tags and passports by joining the ā€˜Cruising Ducks – Original Groupā€™ Facebook group, which offers them for download. Or, you can buy these tags online or make your own. However, there are important rules to follow when hiding your ducks to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

Firstly, never hide ducks in places like pools, hot tubs, shops, or the ocean. These locations can pose safety hazards. For example, someone might get hurt trying to get a duck from a pool or hot tub, or it could look like theft if a duck is found in a shop. Also, accidentally dropping ducks into the ocean is harmful to the environment.

Ducks should only be hidden in public areas of the ship. This means avoiding private spaces such as restrooms, locker rooms, spa areas, and anywhere food is served, to maintain cleanliness and sanitation. Also, the ducks you hide shouldn’t be placed too high or in hard-to-reach areas, so they’re accessible to most passengers without the need to move things around.

Also, make sure that the tags or labels on your ducks are family-friendly, with no inappropriate content, as people of all ages may find them. This helps keep the game fun and suitable for everyone on board.

In summary, when hiding your cruising ducks, choose public spots where they are easily visible and reachable, avoid safety or sanitation risks, and ensure everything about the duck, including its tag, is appropriate for all ages. Following these guidelines will help everyone enjoy the hunt safely and respectfully.

Where Can You Buy Cruise Ducks?

Cruise ducks, which are simply plastic or rubber ducks, can be purchased from online stores such as Amazon, eBay, and Etsy. These platforms offer a wide range of designs, and it’s easier to buy them in large quantities compared to physical stores. You can also find them in gift shops and party stores, but the variety might be more limited.

If the ducks you buy don’t come with tags, there are plenty of tag templates available online. For example, the ‘Cruise Ducks – Original Group’ on Facebook has many you can use. If you’re feeling creative, there’s also the option to decorate or make your own ducks from scratch, although this could be too much work for some.

Types of Cruise Ducks

Unique Rubber Ducks

Cruise ducks come in a delightful variety of themes and styles, from festive rubber ducks dressed as Santa Claus to elegant ducks adorned with top hats. There are several types of cruise ducks, including Pirate, Christmas, Chef, Captain, Mermaid, Halloween, and Easter themed ones, to name a few. For those who prefer something simpler, plain cruise ducks are also an option.

Holiday ducks are particularly popular, matching the spirit of Christmas, Halloween, Easter, and other holidays. Additionally, many cruisers enjoy hiding ducks that reflect their personal interests or backgrounds. This could mean choosing a cowboy duck to represent Texas roots or a duck painted in the colors of a favorite sports team. Some even use these ducks to raise awareness for causes or to honor special individuals in their lives.

Creativity knows no bounds when it comes to decorating these ducks. Handcrafted crochet ducks are especially popular, with intricate patterns and vibrant colors that catch the eye. The sizes vary too, from tiny ducks that could fit in the palm of your hand to larger ones that are designed to stand out. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind and avoid making them too small, as they could pose a choking hazard for young children.

Personalizing your cruise duck is a fun activity, with stickers and various decorations available to make your duck truly unique. Whether you’re adding a bit of bling or going for a more casual look, customizing your duck allows you to express your personality and style in a playful way.

Where You Can Hide Cruise Ducks

Angel Rubber Duck

Here are seven places where you can hide cruise ducks:

Public lounges and seating areas: Look for hiding spots on shelves, near tables, stairwells, elevators, and chairs, window sills, or in nooks within public lounges and seating areas. Atriums are also popular places for hiding cruise ducks. These places are often busy with people, increasing the chances of your duck being found.

Deck chairs on the promenade or pool deck: Tuck a duck in a spot where it can be discovered by someone taking a leisurely stroll or sunbathing. Just ensure it’s not in a position to blow away or cause a trip hazard.

Childrenā€™s play areas: This should be done carefully to ensure the safety of the children. If the ship has a dedicated play area or kids’ club, consider hiding a duck where it can be seen and reached safely by the little ones.

CafƩ tables: Some cruise ships have small cafes or snack areas with tables. You might leave a duck at a table, perhaps near the condiment area or on a window ledge. However, make sure to avoid direct contact with food for health reasons.

Fitness center: Consider hiding a duck in a less trafficked area of the fitness center, such as near the water dispenser or near equipment that is less frequently used.

Library shelves: If the ship has a library, you might hide a duck among the books or on a shelf. Just make sure it’s visible enough so as not to be overlooked by someone browsing the titles.

In your stateroom: Some cruisers also choose to leave a duck in their stateroom for future cruisers to find. You can even leave a personalized message attached, welcoming future cruisers to the room.

After you’ve hidden your rubber duck, it’s a joy to think about who might find it. The act of hiding and seeking cruise ducks creates a shared experience of surprise and delight, bringing together the community of cruisers in a unique and playful way. So next time you’re on a cruise, consider hiding a duck or two. It’s a small gesture that can add a memorable twist to someone’s cruise.

Tips for Finding Cruise Ducks

Two Rubber Ducks

Whether you’re new to the concept or a seasoned hunter, there are strategies to improve your chances of finding cruise ducks. Here are some tips to get you started:

Check social media and cruise forums: Before your cruise, look up any social media groups or forums related to your cruise line or specific voyage. Participants often share clues or announce their intentions to hide ducks on board.

DuckPassport: A useful website for duck hunters is DuckPassport ( duckpassport.com ). This website allows you to select your specific cruise line and ship. Once entered, you’ll gain access to a list of cruise ducks, complete with photos, hidden by fellow cruisers.

Explore the ship thoroughly: The best way to find cruise ducks is by exploring. Walk around different decks, visit various lounges, check out the library, and wander through less frequented areas. The more you explore, the higher your chances of spotting a duck.

Head out early or late at night: Set off your cruise duck hunt early in the day or late at night, as many participants hide ducks during these times.

Join or start a duck hunt group: Some cruises may have organized duck hunt groups. Joining one can make the hunt more fun and social. If there isn’t one, consider starting it by inviting others through the ship’s message boards or social media groups.

Revisit areas: You should also revisit areas. Just because there wasn’t a duck underneath the sofa on Deck 5 in the morning does not mean that one wasn’t placed there throughout the day!

Ask around: Don’t be afraid to ask crew members where they’ve seen ducks hidden in the past. If one person on a previous sailing thought to put a duck in a specific hiding spot, there’s a chance it might be repeated on your voyage!

After you’ve spent time following these tips and hopefully finding some cruise ducks, remember to share your success and experiences with others. Posting your finds on social media or cruise forums not only spreads joy but also encourages more passengers to participate in this fun activity. If you hide a duck, consider leaving hints for others to find it.

Is Hiding Cruise Ducks Allowed?

Three Rubber Ducks

Thankfully, most cruise lines have embraced the tradition of hiding and finding cruise ducks. However, as policies and practices evolve, the future of this beloved activity could be subject to change across different cruise lines.

Recently, Disney Cruise Line has put a stop to the tradition of hiding cruise ducks on their ships. This came to light when Shirley from Florida wrote to Disney after being told she couldn’t hide ducks during her cruise. Adrianna, an official panelist, confirmed that guests are discouraged from hiding rubber ducks or any items in cabins or public areas on the ship.

Despite Disney’s new stance, the tradition continues to thrive on other cruise lines. John Heald, a Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador, has openly supported the duck hiding game:

ā€œMany of the crew love finding the ducks and have them in their cabins as they bring them cheer,ā€ said Heald. ā€œWe have absolutely no problem with guests leaving them as we do think itā€™s fun.ā€

Similarly, Royal Caribbean encourages passengers to hide ducks, as long as it’s done in public areas.

Although most cruise lines continue to allow people to hide cruise ducks, make sure to check with your cruise line beforehand as official policies can change.

Cruise Ducks Aren’t Universally Adored

Various Rubber Ducks

The vast majority of cruise-goers embrace the presence of cruise ducks, finding them a fun addition to the cruise experience. Those who don’t understand the craze are free to ignore any ducks they encounter. Despite this, as the popularity of cruise ducks has increased, so too has the number of detractors voicing their complaints. A discussion on Cruise Critic highlighted a passenger’s shock at another’s plan to bring 100 ducks on board:

ā€œI am a member of a roll call for a future cruise, and am amazed that one fellow cruiser has announced that she will be bringing onboard 100 cruising ducks, plus duck jewelry sets, all to be hidden on the ship. I am appalled at the whole idea – so much plastic tat, yet others on the roll call seem to think the whole idea is excellent. Am I being more of a grumpy old man than normal?ā€

The reactions range from seeing the charm in the hunt to worries about environmental impact, and the appropriateness of such activities on a cruise ship: ā€œNot really, I think it’s a bit tacky as well, but for those families with younger children I can perhaps see the fun aspect of it.ā€

ā€œProbably, but I agree with you. We are wondering how this habit fits with removal of plastic from cruise ships to stop unnecessary plastic pollution of the Oceans.  They may not be single use, but totally unnecessary.ā€

ā€œSorry this thread is now making me chuckle. Keep calm and chill people — they are plastic ducks (and very cute ones at that) and I am guessing that whoever finds them does not throw the packaging over the side.ā€

Critics have several complaints about the cruise ducks phenomenon. Some worry that if too many ducks are hidden, it could lead to clutter and a messy ship environment. Concerns also extend to environmental impact, fearing that ducks might be accidentally thrown into the ocean, contributing to plastic pollution. Others worry that commercialization could ruin the activity’s charm, with an increasing number of people adding business cards to the ducks.

On the other side, many embrace the cruise duck tradition. They see it as a simple yet fun way to connect with fellow passengers. Many highlight the joy and excitement, especially among children, that comes from discovering a hidden duck. However, some acknowledge certain drawbacks, such as ducks being placed in inappropriate places like buffet lines and drink stations, which is unhygienic, and even flushing them down toilets, causing blockages that are frustrating to deal with.

What are Cruise Ducks?

Cruise ducks are a fun and engaging activity for passengers onboard a cruise ship. People take small plastic or rubber ducks and hide in various cruise ship areas. The cruise tradition creates a mini-scavenger hunt for passengers to participate.

When you find a duck on a cruise ship, you can keep it or re-hide it to continue the game.

Some people keep the ducks they find as souvenirs of their trip.

The idea behind ducks on cruise ships is to create a fun activity and foster a sense of community, interaction, and adventure during your journey.

So you may be asking, why ducks?

The simple answer is that rubber duckies are cute, universally recognizable, and easy to find. They’re also fairly cheap and only take up a little space in your luggage.

You can even get creative and bring themed ducks that showcase your personality. You can find unique ducks on Amazon, Etsy, or even travel-themed shops.

While the trend dates back to at least 2015, most people credit the trend’s popularity to a 10-year-old girl named  Abby Davis .

When sailing on Carnival Breeze in 2018 with her family, Abby brought 50 little ducks to hide around the ship.

Throughout the cruise, Abby and her family interacted with passengers who shared the joy and excitement of finding the little yellow toys.

Today, cruise ducks are a common pastime for cruise ship passengers.

You can find them on every cruise line if you keep your eye out.

I’ve found ducks on Royal Caribbean , Virgin Voyages, Carnival Cruise Line, and Celebrity cruises.

Many cruisers have created Facebook groups where you can share your findings and connect with other passengers who hide and search for cruising ducks.

Types of Ducks (And Where to Get Them)

five funny themed rubber cruise ducks

You’ll find all kinds of rubber ducks, from holiday themes like Christmas and Easter to more fun designs like pirates, unicorns, royalty, or ones with wacky hats and accessories.

Remember, the sky’s the limit when customizing your duckies.

You can get cute rubber duckies from a dollar store, Amazon, Etsy, or onboard most cruise ships.

Many cruise ships now offer claw games, where the prize is, you guessed it, a rubber duck.

Some cruisers add or personalize them with unique accessories. Other people get really creative by knitting or crocheting their own ducks.

The more inventive you can be, the more joy you’ll bring to fellow passengers when they discover your hidden treasure on their cruise vacations.

Rules for Hiding Ducks

The game is simple: passengers hide rubber ducks throughout the ship for others to find.

There aren’t any formal rules to the game, but we’ve put together some general guidelines to make the most of this activity.

  • Hide your ducks in public spaces.
  • Never hide a duck in a spot that could cause danger to someone looking to retrieve it.
  • Don’t place ducks in retail stores; otherwise, the finder may look like a shoplifter.
  • Refrain from hiding ducks in restrooms, spa facilities, fitness centers, restaurants, or any other places where hygiene is a concern.
  • If you place a label on the toy, ensure the label’s content is family-friendly.
  • If you place the duck outside, ensure it is safe from the wind. You don’t want your duck to be swept into the ocean, as it is against the cruise line’s policies and environmental concerns.

Keeping these guidelines in mind ensures the activity remains fun for everyone.

And don’t worry; there are plenty of places to hide your duck on the cruise ship. My favorite hiding places are the tops of signs, plants, sculptures, and bookshelves.

Some people like to attach little notes to the duck. The “cruise duck tags” usually contain a story about the passenger or a heartfelt message to the person who finds it.

After hiding a duck, it’s a lot of fun to sit and wait to see if someone finds it. You can check your hiding spot later in the cruise to see if your rubber duck has been discovered.

  • Keep your eyes open : Cruise ducks can be hidden virtually anywhere on the ship. Be attentive while walking around the vessel, and keep an eye out for small ducks hiding in nooks and crannies. You’ll often find ducks in hallways, on the pool deck, in the atrium, and in other public spaces.
  • Visit popular spots : Some areas on the ship are more popular hiding spots for cruise ducks. For example, on Carnival cruise ships, the RedFrog Pub is known to have ducks hidden in the restaurant’s fake palm trees.
  • Connect with fellow duck enthusiasts : Joining cruise-related social media groups or forums can help you connect with other duck fans. They can provide hints or share locations of ducks they’ve found on your specific cruise ship. The  Cruising Ducks Facebook Page  has over 200,000 members!
  • Keep it fun : Remember that finding cruise ducks is meant to be a lighthearted and enjoyable activity. Don’t get too competitive or frustrated if you can’t find any ducks during your cruise. The main goal is to have fun and create lasting memories.
  • Revisit hiding spots:  Ducks migrate to new areas each time someone finds one. If you’re keen on finding a duck, it pays to check the same locations multiple times throughout your cruise vacation.
  • Post on social media (optional):  It’s not mandatory, but many people post photos of the ducks they find on social media. So, take a picture, and use #cruisingducks to spread the joy.

When you find a duck, you can keep it as a souvenir, re-hide it in a new spot, or return it for another guest to see.

There’s no judgment about what you do when you find a duck. I like to re-hide them, but the choice is yours.

What Do Cruise Lines Think?

Cruise lines generally appreciate the cruise duck tradition as it adds an element of fun and excitement for passengers on board. It encourages engagement and interaction among guests, creating a sense of community during their voyage.

Most cruise lines have embraced the phenomenon, adding claw machines where passengers can win a little duck to hide on the ship.

Some cruise staff even get involved, joining the hunt or helping to hide ducks in creative locations.

I’ve talked to several people who hide ducks in their staterooms for the crew to find. If you want the cabin steward to take the duck, leave a note telling them it’s intended for them.

Otherwise, they may avoid taking it, thinking it’s your belonging.

But not everyone loves the duck tradition.

Some passengers feel so strongly against the scavenger hunt that they suggest cruise lines ban ducks altogether.

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, was asked in a Facebook group if the cruise line would ban rubber ducks. Heal said that “Many of the crew love finding the ducks and have them in their cabins as they bring them cheer.” He added, “We have absolutely no problem with guests leaving them as we do think it’s fun.”

As of now, were not aware of any cruise line adding rubber ducks to their list of prohibited items .

So go ahead and join the fun.

Cruising Ducks & Tags: A Guide for Your Cruise

Cruising ducks have become a popular game on cruise ships, and it’s easy to see why. The game involves hiding small rubber ducks throughout the ship for others to find, and it’s a fun way to add a little extra excitement to your cruise experience. But if you’re new to cruising ducks, you might be wondering how to get started. In this article, we’ll take a look at what c ruising ducks are, how to play the game, and why cruising duck tags are an important part of the fun.

What Are Cruising Ducks?

Cruising Ducks on NCL Sky

So, what exactly are cruising ducks? Simply put, they are small rubber ducks that are hidden throughout the ship by fellow passengers. The idea is to hide them in creative and unexpected places for others to find, and to try and find ducks that have been hidden by others. Some people like to collect ducks as they find them, while others prefer to just hide them for others to discover.

People also decorate their cabin doors with Cruising duck magnets , wear T-shirts to show off their love of the game and cruising ducks. Check out some of the duck magnet designs here .

Now, onto the game itself. If you want to get involved in cruising ducks, the first thing you’ll need is a duck to hide. You can buy them online or in stores, and they come in a variety of colors and styles. Once you have your duck, it’s time to find a hiding spot. The key is to be creative ā€“ think outside the box and look for places that are unexpected or hard to reach. Some popular hiding spots include on hallway paintings, stairs, chairs or even in a potted plant.

Once you’ve hidden your duck, it’s time to wait and see if anyone finds it. If they do, they’ll likely move it to a new spot, and the game continues. It’s also common for people to leave notes or messages with their ducks, adding an extra layer of fun to the game.

Cruising Ducks Tags

Cruising Ducks Tag

So, where do cruising duck tags come in? These are small tags that you attach to your duck, with your name and the date you hid it. This helps keep track of who hid the duck and when and allows others to see how long it has been since the duck was hidden. It also adds an extra element of competition, as some people like to try and find ducks that have been hidden for the longest time.

Being Social

Playing the cruising duck game is a fun way to pass the time on a cruise ship, and it’s a great way to meet other passengers who are also looking for ducks. Some people even organize duck-hunting events, where everyone meets up and tries to find as many ducks as possible.

Of course, it’s important to be respectful of the ship and other passengers while playing the game. Make sure you’re not causing any damage or leaving any mess behind, and don’t hide ducks in areas that could be a safety hazard. It’s also a good idea to check with the cruise ship staff to make sure they don’t have any specific rules or regulations about hiding objects on the ship.

cruise duck rules

Cruising ducks are a fun and lighthearted game that can add some extra excitement to your cruise experience. With a little creativity and some duck-hiding skills, you can become a part of this growing community of cruise ship duck hunters. And with cruising duck tags , you can keep track of your ducks and compete with others to see who can hide and find the most ducks. So why not give it a try on your next cruise ? Who knows ā€“ you might just become the next cruising duck champion!

Take a look around your next cruise ship and you may just find a unique souvenir: a duck.

Thatā€™s right. Ducks of all sizes and materials are popping up on cruise ships around the world. And it all started with a simple mission: to make people smile.

Cruising Ducks

The Cruising Ducks phenomenon started in 2018 with an 11-year-old girl named Abby Davis. Her parents say Abby asked them to buy some ducks to take on their 7-day spring break cruise out of Galveston, Texas , aboard the Carnival Breeze . They bought 50 ducks to hide and often saw people become so excited to find one. Her family says Abby even met a girl on the ship that told her how much she loved finding the hidden ducks. The floating hide-and-seek game only grew from there.

ā€œAbby started this to spread happiness, and we have never would have known it would have been like this,ā€ Abbyā€™s mom, Ashley, tells me. ā€œIt really is amazing even to us, how many lives the group has touched.ā€

A Cruising Duck found on a cruise ship.

Finding Ducks

Recently, my husband and I took an 11-day Greek Isles cruise on Norwegian Cruise Lines out of Athens . On the first day, I saw a woman place a duck on a ledge. It caught my eye because it was so unusual, but I chalked it up to her playing a game with her kids; I had no idea at this point about the cruising duck game.

A few days later, we were eating, and I saw another woman place something on top of a sign entering the restaurant. I thought this had to be more than a coincidence, so we checked it out and found a small duck with a note on it. After some research about Cruising Ducks, we spent the rest of our time looking for the small ducks all around the ship. We ultimately decided to bring the duck home for our kids, and they are already looking forward to hiding it on our next family cruise.

With any game, there are some rules when it comes to hiding and finding ducks on cruise ships. Before you hide them, be sure to label the duck with basic information, like the name of the cruise ship and instructions on what to do when you find them. This message can be as simple as ā€œKeep or hide, you decide.ā€ Some cruisers handwrite their own labels, others create mini ā€œpassportsā€ for the duck ā€” you can get as creative as you want! There are plenty of templates online. The label can also include instructions for where to post pictures of you and your new duck so the hiders can see your joy.

When it comes time to hide the ducks, they should be in public places; stay away from shops (may look like shoplifting!), pools, or hot tubs (some kids canā€™t swim). Also, letā€™s keep the ocean clean ā€” please donā€™t hide the ducks somewhere where they can blow into the water (like a handrail). Other than that, get creative! Weā€™ve heard of ducks hidden in elevators, restaurant signs, or even in passenger cabins for the crew to find.

If youā€™re lucky enough to find a duck on your cruise, you have the option to either keep it or re-hide it. As I mentioned, we brought ours home to tell our kids about the game, but we plan to re-hide it on our next cruise. Some hiders want to see how far around the world their little duck can go!

ā€œWe want to see at least one duck travel on every boat!ā€ explains one Cruising Duck Facebook group member. ā€œI hope whoever finds ours will re-hide and keep sending off on another cruise.ā€

Epoxy duck items to be placed on cruise ships.

Different Ducks

Just as the game has grown over the years, so has the creativity when it comes to the ducks. While the game started with basic small rubber ducks, cruisers are now hiding keychains, snow globes, or even making their own duck creations.

You don't have to buy ducks, you can make them too! One cruiser crocheted little ducks for an extra special find.

ā€œMy past cruise, I made epoxy glow-in-the-dark keychains and epoxy anchor keychains,ā€ says one cruiser. ā€œIt allows me to be creative and make things.ā€ Looking online, you will see hand-made wooden ornaments, crocheted ducks, and rubber ducks with added bling to create a bride and groom or a Santa hat for Christmas.

The idea of hiding ducks may seem a bit silly, so I wanted to know exactly why people love and continue this game. I posed the question on the ā€œCruising Ducks-Original groupā€ Facebook group, and I received more than 100 responses within an hour! Even more after that!

ā€œI just heard about the duck hide and find game and I thought it was kind of silly,ā€ explains one group member. ā€œWOW was I wrong! Finding one was the highlight of my day!ā€ Another group member says, ā€œItā€™s nice to know that a complete stranger wanted to bring a smile to your face.ā€

Several group members recounted stories of small children melting down and parents struggling, but then they find a duck and suddenly everyone is happy! ā€œBelieve me, parents appreciate a successful meltdown stopper, when a child has just had enough,ā€ says one group member. ā€œWe carry a couple with us just for that reason.ā€

Others love the memories the ducks create. ā€œI do it because I travel with my children. It is a great time bonding and making memories.ā€ Others do it for the exercise: ā€œHid 100 ducks today. Definitely got my steps in!ā€

While the reasonings are vast, all of the responses had a similar theme: to spread joy. One group member put it best when she says, ā€œTraveling is the cake, cruising is the icing on the cake. Hiding and finding ducks are the sprinkles in the icing. Everyone likes sprinkles, donā€™t they?ā€

Cruising Ducks, what are all the rubber ducks on cruise ships?

A quick guide to ducks on cruise ships (and how to win a free cruise).

If youā€™ve been on a cruise within the past several years, youā€™ll likely have either come across a little rubber duck hiding somewhere or have heard about someone finding one. These ducks on cruise ships sometimes come with little tags with information about who hid the cruising duck and ask the person who found it to re-hide the duck for someone else (or keep it as a fun memory of the cruise). Furthermore, the tags might have instructions on how to share the find on a Facebook group, website, or Instagram with a hashtag.

Why are people hiding little rubber ducks on cruise ships?

The cruising duck phenomenon started a few years ago as a fun hide & seek game for people of all ages on cruise ships. Allegedly started by a young girl and her father as a fun game with no real purpose other than to just make others smile. Hiding ducks on cruise ships has evolved from simple rubber ducks purchased online to elaborate homemade & 3D printed ducks that more creative people love to hide (I canā€™t wait to find one of those!). Some cruisers even enjoy hiding things like duck keychains, stuffed animals, or little charms.

Admittedly, I thought the idea was silly, and there are other cruisers who are downright angry that people hide these ducks on ships. Some passengers even proclaim they’ll throw them away if they see them!

Until I found a rubber duck hiding on a cruise ship , I didnā€™t realize the fun of it all. On a Baltics cruise aboard the Norwegian Dawn, I happened to come across TWO ducks and it really just gave me a huge smile and it was at that point, I realized the fun of discovering a cute little creature hiding somewhere discreetly. Finding a couple of rubber ducks on a cruise brought out my inner child and reminded me how the little things in life could be good fun. Itā€™s infectious, to say the least. So on our two next cruises, there are a couple of ducks I plan on hiding myself for the first time.

Cruising Ducks - Rubber Ducks On Cruise Ships

Are there rules to hiding cruise ducks?

In short, not really, but there are some common sense (and common courtesy) things to consider when hiding a duck on a cruise.

Donā€™t hide ducks in shops

Only hide ducks in public areas

Avoid hiding ducks in pool, hot tub, and spa areas,

Donā€™t hide anywhere outside where the cruising ducks could end up flying overboard

We think hiding ducks in restaurants and buffets are not the best idea for sanitary reasons.

Some places where people find ducks on a cruise ship:

ā€¢Deep in the plants found in the atrium area

ā€¢Discreetly atop a video game

ā€¢Behind a piece of furniture peeking out

ā€¢In a cabin safe on the day of checkout for the next passenger to occupy the room

Do cruise lines allow rubber ducks to be hidden?

Most cruise lines havenā€™t said one way or the other on whether leaving these ducks around the ship is allowed. In fact, Carnival Cruise Line recently said that they embrace the fun to be had by hiding these little ducks. Furthermore, while some passengers have said they see staff taking the ducks away and fear them being thrown in the trash, itā€™s fun to know that even the staff enjoy finding these ducks and sometimes collect them. Almost all of the cruise crew know about ā€œduck huntingā€ and know not to throw them away.

Explained: Rubber Ducks on a Cruise Ship (And How to Find Them)

Maybe you’ve seen pictures of passenger finds posted on Facebook. Or perhaps you’ve gone on a cruise and seen a little rubber duckie sitting in a corner, seemingly hidden but also out of place.

Ducks found on a cruise ship

They are cute, fun, and if you look hard enough, these ducks can be almost anywhere on a cruise ship. So what exactly are they? How did they get there? And can you take them? Here’s what you want to know about those little rubber ducks that have invaded cruise ships.

A Passenger-Created Treasure Hunt for Ducks

Cruises are known for being fun. There’s music, events, shows, waterslides, arcades, and a lot more. But there can always be more fun, right? That’s where the ducks come in.

In a trend that isn’t quite clear where it started but has spread like wildfire thanks to social media, everyday passengers bring small rubber duckies with them onto the ship. They then plant these ducks around the ship in little hiding places that can be anywhere from the dining room to a lounge to the pool deck. If it’s a public place on the ship, there’s a chance that a duck is hidden somewhere.

Sometimes the ducks are adorned with a tag or label of the person/family that placed them or the date of the cruise and the ship. Other times they are simply there waiting to be found.

Look online and you’ll find all sorts of Facebook groups for finding ducks on cruise ships, or you might see them posted on the group of a specific cruise sailing.

As of yet, no cruise lines place ducks on their ships. This is all done completely by cruise passengers hoping to share a little joy via a duck “treasure hunt.” It’s simple, but an easy way to bring a smile to another passenger — especially if it’s found by kids who especially seem to love hunting ducks on the ship.

Cruise Duck Etiquette (Can You Take Them?)

So what do you do if you find a duck? Can you take it? Well, you have a few options.

If simply spotting a duck is enough for you, then you can leave it alone and let someone else find it. Some people just take a photo to show they found it and then let it be.

If you like, you can also snag it, see if there is an associated Facebook page for it or another way to share your find with others. If you want, you can also take the duck and keep it as a souvenir and a little memento of your cruise. Kids especially love to see how many they can collect during the cruise.

Perhaps the nicest thing to do is to “pay it forward” with the duck. When you find it, grab it and then find a new hiding place for someone else to discover. This keeps the duck in play and the hunt ongoing versus taking it out of circulation.

When hiding you want to make it a challenge (so don’t just set it in the middle of a table somewhere), but not so hard that it won’t be found before the end of the cruise.

Tips for Finding Ducks

Ducks found in a bathroom on a cruise

Want to find ducks on your own? It’s a fun way to spend some time if you are looking for something to do around the ship, and kids especially enjoy the treasure hunt aspect. If you want to be successful, keep the following tips in mind:

Keep Your Eyes Peeled: It goes without saying that if you want to find a duck, then you need to be paying attention. On a cruise ship, however, there are so many distractions with things to do, people, artwork, bars, restaurants, events, and more. It’s easy to lose your focus and start checking out other things than staying focused on the ducks.

Tune Into Pops of Color: One good thing about rubber duckies is that they do anything but blend in. The classic yellow color is eye-catching, but ducks can come in any color from purple to blue to pink. The one thing that’s nice is that they are always a bright color that will mean they stand out. While ducks may be hidden on the cruise, you can’t say they are camouflaged. Keep your eyes tuned into pops of color and you might find a duck faster.

Get the Whole Family Involved: It makes sense that multiple sets of eyes are better than one. If you want to up your chances of finding a rubber duck on your cruise, then make it a family activity. Have everyone in on the hunt and you’ll cover more ground and be less likely to overlook a hidden duck.

Remember, these ducks are all hidden by passengers. That means the number of ducks on the ship will vary. We’d guess that cruises during the summer and holidays when there are more kids sailing are more apt to have a greater number of ducks as it seems to be popular with families. In other words, it could be that your cruise has a lot of ducks to find or fewer than normal. You’ll never know until you start searching.

Cruise Ducks: Everything You Ever Wanted to Know!

Cruise ducks are a fun phenomenon that has truly taken flight aboard cruise ships, but why? What is so appealing about these cute and quirky figures, and how can you join the feathered fun?

In This Article…

What is a cruise duck.

A cruise duck is a small rubber duck that gets to take a big vacation aboard a cruise ship. These colorful toys may be plain or themed, and may even be homemade or decorated. They are hidden around cruise ships in a fun, passenger-led game of hide-and-seek.

Exciting to find and cheerful to share, cruise ducks come with a “hide or keep, you decide” philosophy. Some passengers love to re-hide ducks to bring joy to other passengers, while some collect ducks as whimsical vacation souvenirs.

Various Cruise Ducks

Many cruise ducks are labeled with stickers, tags, or ribbons with the name of the ship and sailing date, and may also include a family name, social media hashtag, or QR code with an invitation to snap a duck selfie to share in Facebook groups or on other platforms such as Twitter or Instagram.

Some ducks travel even further than a single cruise, and may eventually be spotted on different ships all around the world as they are kept by different guests for re-hiding on future sailings.

How Cruise Ducks Got Started

The exact beginning of the cruise duck phenomenon is shrouded in mystery, as some guests remember setting sail with rubber ducks for many years as far back as 2015 or earlier.

The most widespread acknowledgment of the accepted beginning of cruising ducks is in March 2018, when an 11-year-old girl named Abby Davis brought 50 ducks aboard Carnival Breeze , setting sail from Galveston to spread kindness and fun during her spring break vacation. The project was a rousing success, with one duck “hiding” in plain sight for three days before being found.

Cruising Ducks Original

Today, the cruise ducks phenomenon has become a type of oceangoing geocaching, with guests from all over the world eagerly hunting ducks on every major cruise line, including Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International , Holland America Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line , Princess Cruises, and more.

Social media groups dedicated to the ducks continue to drive interest in the game, and finding even one duck can be a source of delight for folks of all ages. Similar to the painted rocks scavenger hunts, the hide-and-seek of ducks can add even more fun to every cruise sailing.

Types of Cruise Ducks

The traditional cruise duck is a small rubber duck, similar to the classic bathtub toy, but that’s only the beginning of the fun.

any rubber ducks have themed designs, and holiday ducks are especially popular for Christmas , Halloween, Easter, or other holiday sailings. Pirate, captain, or mermaid ducks are other fun designs popular on cruises.

Themed Cruising Ducks

Many guests also choose ducks with themes to match their hometowns – cowboy ducks for Texas cruisers, for example – or to represent their favorite sports teams, careers, animals, or military branches. Some ducks are used to help raise awareness of individual causes, or to celebrate a special someone.

Handcrafted ducks are a popular favorite, or basic ducks may be hand-decorated with extra bling. Crocheted or origami ducks are also great choices. Many cruisers are opting for even more unique ducks with key chains , magnets, hair barrettes, or plush toys. Some ducks have wacky hairstyles, and some even light up.

Guidelines for Hiding Ducks

No matter what type of duck will take a cruise, there are basic guidelines for safely and effectively hiding the ducks. While no formal rules exist, these guidelines help ensure everyone can enjoy cruise ducks.

  • Ducks should be hidden in public areas only, never in crew-only areas or on any restricted equipment such as lifesaving gear.
  • No ducks should be hidden in any retail stores to minimize any hint of shoplifting or theft when the duck is discovered and picked up.
  • Do not hide ducks in restrooms or locker rooms, spa treatment rooms, on buffet food serving dishes, or anywhere sanitation may be a concern.
  • Duck tags or labels should be family-friendly without any vulgarity or profanity, as it is never known who will find and pick up the duck.
  • Avoid placing ducks in any spot that may be windy or if there is any risk of the duck accidentally going overboard, which would violate many cruise lines’ environmental policies.
  • Do not place ducks in a ship’s pools or hot tubs where kids might overreach in their eagerness to collect the duck and could fall into the water.
  • Do not place ducks irretrievably high where they will be hard for most passengers to reach, even if they do spot the duck.
  • Ducks should be in relatively plain sight so they can be seen without moving or rearranging items such as stacks of towels, library books, or dishes.

Fortunately, there are many great nooks and crannies to hide ducks. In stairwells and elevators are favorite spots, as are nestling ducks into potted plants or balancing them on sculptures, artwork frames, or statues.

The tops of signs, sitting on tables or chairs, atop a piano, in corners, or in a ship’s atrium are other popular places to hide cruise ducks. Some cruisers also choose to leave a duck in their stateroom for their attendant or future cruisers to find.

Once ducks are hidden, many participating cruisers enjoy going back to the hiding spot to see if the duck has been discovered, and it can be even more fun to try and find the same duck later during the cruise.

Tips for Finding Ducks

You don’t have to hide ducks in order to find them, as the game is not necessarily a reciprocal activity. If you find a duck, you can choose to rehide it, or you can keep it as a souvenir or gift . But how can you improve your odds of finding a cruising duck?

  • Be alert to unique and unexpected hiding places, especially high (above eye level) and low (closer to the ground), and frequently check for clever hiding spots.
  • Choose different stairwells and elevators when walking around the ship to cover as many potential hiding spots as possible.
  • Head out early in the day on a duck hunt to check out as many hiding spots as possible, as many participants hide ducks either late at night or early in the morning.
  • Revisit different areas of the ship throughout the day, as ducks may migrate to new spots each time they are found and rehidden.

Two Cruise Ducks

When you find a duck, the choice is yours whether or not to keep it or hide it again for someone else to enjoy, with no judgment about which you choose. Some travelers reposition ducks immediately, while others might wait for a day or two.

Some even keep ducks until their next cruise, or photograph them on different adventures at different ports of call, even on different ships as they travel the cruising world.

What Do Cruise Lines Think?

There is a lot of debate about whether or not cruise lines approve of hidden ducks or not. While there are no official policies about cruise ducks, in general, crew members enjoy finding them and may keep or hide the ducks again themselves.

Some guests report seeing ducks discarded in the trash, though this was more frequent when the game was less well-known than today.

Large Duck!

Carnival Cruise Line brand ambassador John Heald has commented on cruising ducks, and encourages the fun aboard the Carnival cruise ship fleet.

“Many of the crew love finding the ducks and have them in their cabins as they bring them cheer,” Heald said. “We have absolutely no problem with guests leaving them as we do think it’s fun.”

While there are always those who hate ducks and think the practice should be banned, no cruise line has yet added “little rubber ducks” to its list of prohibited items .

Travelers who think the activity is silly can simply overlook any ducks they see, just as all cruisers are able to pick and choose which activities onboard a ship they want to join in and those they prefer to avoid.

Where to Buy Cruise Ducks

If you want to bring your own toy ducks to hide onboard a cruise, where do you buy them? Any small rubber duck will work, such as those found in claw game vending machines or sold as bath toys for young children.

Ordering ducks online generally works better, with a greater variety of designs and themed ducks available with bulk quantity discounts. Amazon, party stores, and toy store websites generally have good selections of ducks available, and you can even buy duck kits that include pre-printed labels to attach to the ducks .

Different Options in Shop

Other options to check for buying ducks are local discount or dollar stores, as well as flea markets that may have bulk toy vendors. Online auction sites like eBay may also have great deals on ducks perfect for cruising.

If the ducks you buy do not come with pre-made labels or tags, a variety of templates for cruise duck tags can be found online, including on the dedicated cruising ducks Facebook page and groups .

You can also choose to make cruise ducks with whatever craft you enjoy, such as crocheting or knitting ducks, making hair bows, carving wooden ducks, creating felt ducks, or decorating duck ornaments. Every style is welcomed in the game, and more unique ducks make even more desirable and sought-after ducks to find.

There is a new activity between passengers that we keep seeing more and more of. Are you intrigued?

No, not a real duck ā€“ cruise ducks are little rubber ducks that have been hidden on board the ship by a passenger. And thereā€™s a good chance youā€™ve seen one without even realizing it.

Many cruise ships are known for a place to have fun, and hiding and finding a rubber cruise duck is just a fun game like searching for a hidden Mickey or painted rocks! What is a Cruise Duck

So, what exactly is a cruise duck? A cruise duck is simply a rubber duck that has been hidden on board a cruise ship by a passenger. The object of the game is to find as many cruise ducks as possible, take a photo of it to share on social media and then hide them again for the next passenger to find. Itā€™s a game that can be played by both children and adults, and itā€™s a great way to pass the time on long voyages.

Many ducks hide in the trees, by the hot tub, or even get left in the room in a drawer or safe for the next room occupants to find when they unpack. Look high and low when you start to hunt and try to be creative if you ae hiding some ducks.

Cruise ducks have been around for years , but theyā€™ve only become really popular in recent years. Thanks to social media, passengers are now able to share photos and videos of their finds with friends and family back home . This has helped to spread the word about the game and encourage more people to take part.

Why do people hide cruise ducks? There are a few reasons. Firstly, itā€™s a fun way to pass the time on long voyages. Secondly, itā€™s a great way to make new friends onboard. And finally, itā€™s a nice way to spread some happiness around the ship. After all, who doesnā€™t love finding a hidden rubber duck?

Some ducks are hidden very well while others are in plain sight. Some of the kiddos might need help from an adult to spot some of the ducks in a tricky hiding place. If you have a difficult time locating one you can always ask a crew member if they have seen any, they may give you a clue! Most crew members know to leave them alone and will not move them or throw them out.

Thinking about joining the fun on your next cruise? Make sure if you hide some cruise ducks to add cruise duck tags if you want to follow the whereabouts of your ducks. Join a cruising ducks Facebook page for ideas and hints from a fellow passenger.

How did Cruise Ducks Get Started

People started doing this before 2018 but it grew in popularity in 2018. The inspiration for the new game of hide-and seek with toy ducks came from a young girlā€™s wish to bring joy and happiness. Her name is Abby Davis, this 10-year-old girl helped popularize this fun activity with her mom, Ashley Davis on their 7 day Carnival Breeze cruise back in 2018! Carnival cruise line is known for fun, but this game is now on other cruise lines as well. It is less likely to spot ducks on an adult only ship but not impossible.

How to Play

Now folks like to buy ducks at places like Amazon and Oriental trading because itā€™s easy to find cute ducks for pretty cheap and get free shipping. But you can make handmade ducks and label them with the name of the ship or the date, buy special colors of ducks, duck key chains or anything fun you can think of. Many kids like to find them so try to keep your ducks and their notes family friendly!

You can make little cards and tie them to them, or leave business cards on them so cruise passengers can post and tag you or email you a pic of them with your duck. Once you find a duck, you can keep it, or just take a photo of it (use the hashtag #cruisingducks) and leave it be. If you keep it try to leave one of your own ducks somewhere for someone else to find. There are no official rules for the cruise duck game, but please do not put them in gift shops, do put them in a public space, and not where they can be blown overboard or where they create a safety hazard. Do try to be courteous and have fun with the rubber duckies! Purchase Ducks .

Conclusion:

Are you ready to get on board with the cruise duck phenomenon? If youā€™re planning a cruise, make sure to keep your eyes peeled for hidden rubber ducks and join one of the numerous social media groups to get started on the fun! And if youā€™re feeling adventurous, why not hide one yourself? Remember, the more people playing the game, the more fun it is for everyone involved.

Cruise ducks: what are they and what do you do with them.

Smalls Skeleton in his cruise fedora with rubber ducks

Thanks to friends with Jeeps, I knew about Jeep ducking. Which sounded fun. I mean, how cool to be out and about and come back to find someoneā€™s left a duck on your Jeep. But what I didnā€™t know until our cruise last year was that people do cruise ducks too!

In fact, cruise ducks may have inspired Jeep ducks. Ashley Kosciolek explained on The Points Guy how a 10-year-old girl named Abby started the cruising ducks phenomenon in 2018 with what was meant to be a cute gesture. According to Auto Outlets USA , Jeep ducks didnā€™t take off until the pandemic in 2020.

Itā€™s all the same principle: you get a duck, whether itā€™s buying some or finding them, and leave them for others to find. You can put tags on them, either that you make yourself or buy online.

For cruisers, a lot of people leave their names (or social media handles), the cruise shipā€™s name, and date. Some pre-made tags come with the hashtag ā€œ#cruisingducksā€ already on it, while others have a blank space to add your own. Tags make it more fun but theyā€™re optional. So is taking a selfie with your duck and posting it on social media.

Searching for Cruise Ducks

On our cruise last year, Court and Wayne sat with a couple at dinner who said theyā€™d left some cruise ducks around the ship. They were a little bummed, though, because they kept checking social media, but so far nobody had found one. Or if they had, they hadnā€™t posted about it.

Well, that sparked Courtā€™s interest. She knew Iā€™d get a kick out of looking. So the hunt was on!

Court and I looked and looked but never found one. I found Dr. Seuss and some great towel animals, though!

Smalls Skeleton riding gator towel animal

The one place we never looked was offshore, however. Maybe cruise ducks were left there too? Since it was our first time trying to find them, we didnā€™t think to look there.

Smalls Skeleton looking out at shore from aboard Carnival Horizon

However, it turns out we werenā€™t looking in the right places. There are some rules we didnā€™t know about then that we do now. (Weā€™ll get to that.)

It wouldā€™ve been exciting to find a cruise duck, but we never did. Near the end of the cruise, Court asked the coupler at dinner who had hidden some for hints on where to look. The next night at dinner, she brought one for Court, which she immediately gave to me. Appropriately for our writer in the family, itā€™s holding a book.

Cruise Ducks Rules

However, I didnā€™t just want to find them. I wanted to leave them too. After all, it is more rewarding to give than receive. So I asked Court to keep an eye out for any fun duck options for our next cruise. The other day at Target, she spotted the perfect one. Black and white skeleton ducks!

Smalls Skeleton with three skeleton rubber ducks

But I also wondered what the protocol was for leaving them. The Points Guy had some great pointers. Some of the pere-made cruise duck tags weā€™ve seen also include some of these rules.

  • Donā€™t hide them in pools, hot tubs, or spas.
  • Donā€™t hide them in any of the onboard shops.
  • Donā€™t place them where they might fall overboard.

Where to Find Cruise (and Jeep) Ducks

Iā€™d venture to say cruise and Jeep ducks have reinvigorated the rubber ducky industry. There are so many options now. All different sorts of designs and sizes. As well as handy dandy tags to make leaving those easy too. (Something my boney hands appreciate!)

Etsy and Amazon are good places to find both ducks and tags. Facebook is the place to find cruise duck groups.

We added a Cruise Ducks shelf ā€”and a Jeep Ducks one tooā€” to the Skareporium since Amazon carries both a variety of ducks and tags. You can buy them in bulk as a theme, like Halloween, or just an assortment.Ā Some of the cruise ducks tags come with #cruisingducks printed on them and a pre-punched hole, but no cord. But a lot include fasteners too. Here are some examples of both ducks and tags that youā€™ll find in our Skareporium now.

How fun. Well, if I ever do go on a cruise, I’ll be sure to bring along a bunch of ducks! The skeleton ducks you found are PERFECT.

' src=

Itā€™s funny timing that Iā€™m just now reading this. A couple of days ago, I noticed a little rubber duck with a tag wedged next to the driverā€™s seat of my husbandā€™s Jeep Wrangler. I go ā€œwhere did you get that?ā€ He said someone left it on his Jeep at Costco a while back and he forgot about it. I am not on most social media anymore either to know itā€™s a thing. Those skeleton ducks are cool!

' src=

Hey! This is so cool you discovered my post after finding a duck in your husband’s Jeep! He got ducked! It’s cool he kept the duck even though he didn’t know what it was all about. So glad I wrote about this now! Thanks for the comment!

It’s SO much fun to leave them and find them, Ms. Priscilla!!!!

The ducks often have information cards attached to them bearing the names of the people who hid them and where those passengers are from.

The origin of cruise ducks is not entirely clear, but they have become a fun way for passengers to interact with each other and add some excitement to their cruise experience. Some passengers even bring their own personalized ducks to hide, adding a unique touch to the game. While cruise ducks are not officially sanctioned by cruise lines, they have become a beloved tradition among many cruise enthusiasts .

I am one of these cruise duck enthusiasts! Plan ahead, and you can have a lot of fun.

If you're planning to participate in the cruise duck game, it's important to keep in mind the rules and etiquette. While hiding ducks is encouraged, it's important to make sure they are not placed in areas that could be hazardous or cause damage. Additionally, it's important to respect the rules and regulations of the cruise line and avoid hiding ducks in restricted areas. With these guidelines in mind, cruise ducks can add a fun and lighthearted element to your next cruise vacation.

What are Cruise Ducks?

Cruise ducks are small rubber ducks that are brought on board by passengers on a cruise ship. These ducks are usually brightly colored and decorated with themes such as pirates, superheroes, or even sports teams. They are often placed in public areas of the ship, such as hallways, stairwells, or lounges, with the intention of being found by other passengers.

The tradition of cruise ducks began as a fun game among passengers, where they would hide the ducks and leave clues for others to find them. Over time, the game has evolved into a community activity, where passengers share photos and stories of their ducks on social media and online forums. Some passengers even collect and trade ducks with each other.

Cruise ducks are not an official part of any cruise line's activities or events, but they have become a popular pastime among passengers. Some cruise lines have even embraced the tradition and have created their own branded ducks for passengers to purchase and collect.

While cruise ducks are not required for a successful cruise experience, they can add an extra element of fun and excitement for passengers. They provide a unique way for passengers to connect with each other and create lasting memories.

Benefits of Cruise Ducks

Cruise ducks provide a fun and unique way to connect with other passengers on the ship. 2. Adding excitement to the cruise

Cruise ducks add an extra element of excitement to the cruise experience. Whether you're hiding a duck or searching for one, it's a fun way to pass the time and add some adventure to your trip. It's also a great way to get the whole family involved in a fun activity.

Overall, cruise ducks provide a fun and unique way to enhance your cruise experience. Whether you're a seasoned cruiser or a first-timer, hiding or finding a duck can add an extra element of excitement and help you create lasting memories of your trip.

How to Use Cruise Ducks

Cruise ducks are small rubber ducks that have become a popular trend among cruisers. They are typically hidden around the ship for others to find, and many people collect them as souvenirs. Here are some tips on how to use cruise ducks:

  • Bring your own duck : If you want to participate in the cruise duck trend, bring your own duck to hide. You can purchase them online or in stores, and they come in a variety of colors and designs. Make sure to write your name or cabin number on the bottom of the duck so that others can identify who hid it.
  • Be respectful : When hiding your duck, make sure to be respectful of other passengers and the ship's crew. Don't hide your duck in areas that are off-limits or that could cause damage to the ship. Also, be mindful of other passengers who may not be interested in the cruise duck trend.
  • Follow the rules : Some cruise lines have specific rules about the cruise duck trend. For example, they may require that ducks are only hidden in public areas of the ship and not in cabins or private spaces. Make sure to check with your cruise line before participating in the trend.
  • Have fun : The cruise duck trend is meant to be a fun and lighthearted activity for passengers. Don't take it too seriously and enjoy the thrill of hiding and finding ducks around the ship.

Overall, the cruise duck trend is a fun way to add some excitement to your cruise vacation. By following these tips, you can participate in the trend while being respectful of others and the ship's rules.

Cruise Duck Safety

When it comes to hiding cruise ducks, passengers should always prioritize safety. While it may seem like a harmless game, hiding ducks in certain areas of the ship can cause safety hazards. For example, hiding ducks in lifeboats or on the ship's navigation equipment can interfere with the crew's ability to carry out their duties and can potentially put passengers at risk.

To ensure that everyone stays safe, passengers should follow these guidelines when hiding cruise ducks:

  • Do not hide ducks in any areas that are off-limits to passengers or crew members.
  • Do not hide ducks in lifeboats, on the ship's navigation equipment, or in any other areas that could interfere with the ship's operation or safety procedures.
  • Do not hide ducks in areas that could pose a tripping hazard or cause other safety concerns.
  • Always be aware of your surroundings and make sure that hiding a duck will not cause any safety issues .

In addition to following these guidelines, passengers should also be mindful of the impact that hiding cruise ducks can have on the environment. While most cruise ducks are made of plastic or rubber, they can still contribute to pollution if they end up in the ocean. Passengers should make sure to dispose of any unwanted ducks properly and avoid hiding them in areas where they could end up in the water.

Overall, hiding cruise ducks can be a fun way to add some excitement to a cruise, but passengers should always prioritize safety and be mindful of their impact on the environment. By following these guidelines, everyone can enjoy the game while staying safe and protecting the beautiful ocean environments that they are visiting.

Before every cruise that I go on, I buy a bunch of the little yellow rubber ducks and tags. I write my name and wish the finder of the duck a fun and happy cruise. I also enjoy finding them, and residing, hoping that a small child might find it and help put a big smile on their face.
