London RIB Voyages

London’s best Thames river cruises

Get a whole new perspective of the city with these top Thames river cruises

Think you’ve ticked off everything London has to offer? Think again. Try a Thames river cruise – and no, we’re not talking about the Clippers (well we are, but only a little bit). There are few better ways to take in the capital than by its famously choppy, murky central waterway. Plus the views, from Hampton Court down to the City and Greenwich, are some of the absolute finest our city has to offer.

It's time to ditch dry land and hop aboard a Thames river boat tour. And plenty of London’s top attractions are best seen from the water – so get your camera ready.

Best Thames river cruises in London

Thames Rockets

Thames Rockets

  • Ships and boats

Bring your waterproofs, because the slick RIB (rigid inflatable boat) operation offers a high-speed ride on the Thames. It's a great way to discover how exhilarating it can be to swoop along the Thames at almost 30 knots – that’s nearly 35 mph, nautical novices! We're not sure how much you'll actually be able to see, but there are plenty more leisurely-paced tours for that sorta thing.

Bateaux London Cruises

Bateaux London Cruises

  • Victoria Embankment

A good river cruise for those who want a spot of grub while taking in the sights along the Thames – Bateaux offer a full range of different dining cruises. There’s the lunch, afternoon tea and dinner cruise – or you could really pull the stops out and enjoy their three-course lunch with a live jazz band playing assorted swingin’ classics. All river cruises depart from Victoria Embankment.

City Cruises

City Cruises

  • Things to do
  • Walks and tours

Want to see the city in style? City cruises operate on a hop-on, hop-off basis and run from Westminster, Waterloo, Tower and Greenwich Piers with commentary along the way. All the departure points are convenient for the city’s various sights, with Greenwich Pier ideal for the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory.

London Duck Tours

London Duck Tours

Praise whichever brilliant mind decided to paint the scant remaining WW2 landing vehicles in bright, rubber-duck yellow! These duck city tours take in all the typical land-based sights – then has two ‘splashdowns’ into the Thames as it goes into nautical mode and takes passengers around Docklands, Canary Wharf and Greenwich.

Thames RIB Experience

Thames RIB Experience

  • Sightseeing

Instead of a usual tour’s drab history lessons and endless stream of tedious facts, why not try something a little more thrilling? The Thames RIB Experience is more like a rollercoaster than a classic sightseeing tour, and sees passengers jetted across the water at an impressive 45mph. Lifejackets and waterproofs are provided (fortunately), leaving you free to enjoy whizzing around in figure-eights in open water between Tower Bridge and the Isle of Dogs. Try and take in some sights as the high winds reshape your face.

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats

Thames River Boats take you all the way from the Palace of Westminster upriver to Hampton Court Palace. It’s a pretty leisurely 22-mile journey: in 90 minutes you’ll be at Kew; in another 90, you’ll be at Hampton Court. But this westward route is a lovely way to appreciate the Thames, as the banks get greener, less cluttered with high-rise buildings and the river buses are replaced by rowers.

Thames Clippers

Thames Clippers

These days the Thames Clippers are better known as ‘Uber Boats’, not because they’re the most incredible boats but because, you guessed it, they’re sponsored by a taxi company. Sure, they don’t go very fast (trundling along at a very leisurely 30mph), but they’re a pretty underrated, cost-effective way to traverse the Thames.

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Vintage Red Bus Tour and Thames Cruise

Why choose between the road and the river when you can have both? First up on this guided tour you'll be driven round the capital in a routemaster (that's the old red double decker bus), before boarding a Thames Cruiser to view the sites from the water. Sail past landmarks like Shakespeare's Globe and Tower Bridge, before getting back on the bus and heading to her Maj's residence: Buckingham Palace. There's also the option to add a ticket for the London Eye on this package.

Tate to Tate Boat

Tate to Tate Boat

A connecting service between either art institution, the Tate to Tate Boat runs every 40 minutes. Aside from getting you from one gallery to another, it’s also great for taking in lots of central London scenery. As you might expect, the boat itself is an arty affair: YBA Damien Hirst covered both the exterior and interior with his trademark spots. It’s also genuinely the quickest way to travel from Tate to Tate – this way, you avoid an irritatingly convoluted tube or bus journey.

Cruise structure and seating tips

thames river cruise seating

Most cruise boats have both indoor and outdoor seating with two-by-two seats.

For the best selfie-spots, pick an outdoor seat for uninterrupted views and perfect photo sessions if you don't mind the somewhat-harsh weather. However, it's a good idea to wear clothes that dry quick if you fear you might get wet.

If you are picking an indoor seat, pick a window seat, especially if you are travelling solo, for a great view. Indoor seats are also great if you think it may rain but still want to go on a cruise. These indoor spaces are also heated and most cruise boats are equipped with a full-licensed bar.

Opt for comfortable attire that allows freedom of movement. It's also advisable to dress in layers as London's weather can be quite unpredictable. This way you can add on more layers if the weather gets chilly. Don't forget hats and sunscreen if you are opting for a cruise during the day, especially in the summer.

No Smoking sign

  • Safety first:  Life jackets are provided and must be worn if instructed. Crew members will brief you on safety procedures before departure.
  • Smoking restrictions:  Most cruises have a no-smoking policy indoors, including cabins and enclosed areas. Smoking might be allowed on designated outdoor decks, so check signage.
  • Mind the gap:  Be cautious when moving around the boat, especially between decks or when disembarking. Wear sturdy shoes with good grip.
  • Keep it clean:  Bins are provided for waste disposal. Help maintain the cleanliness of the boat by disposing of rubbish responsibly.
  • Evening Cruise on River Thames: Children aged 13 and under are not allowed on the cruise. Outside food and drinks are not allowed and it is not wheelchair accessible.

Aerial view of the Thames

  • Dress for the weather:  Pack layers! London's weather is notoriously fickle. A light rain jacket, a scarf, and sunglasses (even in cloudy skies) are your allies. If it's a scorcher, a hat and sunscreen are essential. Opt for comfy shoes – you might be tempted to explore once you disembark.
  • Pick your pier on HOHO:  Consider your cruise's direction. Greenwich Pier offers a glimpse into maritime history, while Westminster Pier puts you near Big Ben. Research your starting point for nearby restaurants or pubs for a pre-cruise bite.
  • Pack like a seasoned traveller:  Bring a reusable water bottle and a tote bag. Plastic is a foe on the Thames! Pack snacks if you're on a longer cruise, but don't forget – most cruises offer food and drinks for purchase. Cameras are a must, and binoculars add an extra layer of swashbuckling fun!
  • Capture the golden hour: For stunning worthy for the ‘gram photos, go for sunset cruises, when the sky explodes with vibrant colors.

This iconic landmark isn't just beautiful, it's also functional! Tower Bridge is a combined bascule and suspension bridge famous for its raising center section to allow tall ships on the Thames.

You'll visit timeless cultural heritage sites throughout cities and towns steeped in hundreds, and even thousands of years of history. Tour craggy castles, opulent palaces, and majestic cathedrals. Stroll along medieval lanes in quaint English villages. Sip afternoon tea with scones and cream, or stroll along the top of windswept cliffs.

On England cruises, you'll depart from the seaside city of Southampton, gateway to England's South Coast. Visit the picturesque port of Dover, known for the iconic White Cliffs. Explore the northern port of Liverpool, with a fine maritime and music heritage. England Cruise Highlights

Serene countryside.

England’s countryside ranges from the rolling soft greens of the south to the mountains and rugged shorelines of North Wales. From Dover, you can’t miss the famous, chalky White Cliffs. Stroll along the top, taking in views across the English Channel to France and enjoying the breeze. If you have time in Southampton before or after your cruise, head out to the New Forest, a wooded National Park, known for its wild ponies.

Cosmopolitan Cities

Explore urban life on your cruise to England. See the sights in London, the buzzing capital, packed with galleries, museums, and world-class shopping. Learn about Liverpool’s maritime history and admire its regenerated waterfront. Beatles fans will, of course, want to take a tour and learn about the band’s beginnings. Soccer followers won’t be disappointed, either; Liverpool F.C, and rivals Manchester United and Manchester City are all based in the north, with stadium tours on offer.

Centuries of History

History dates back thousands of years in England. Visit the neolithic stone circle of Stonehenge, established an astonishing 5,000 years ago. Fast forward to London and the often grisly history associated with the famous Tower of London, or admire graceful Canterbury Cathedral, all gothic spires and soaring interiors, on a day trip from Dover. Discover the serene old city of Winchester from Southampton, or wander around Roman-built Chester, all half-timbered houses and cobbled streets.

Find the best cruise for you

Featured cruise deals, cruising guide, why take a cruise vacation.

If you have a place on your bucket list, chances are, a cruise will get you there – provided the destination is along a coastline or inland waterway. Cruises cover the world, taking millions of passengers each year to regions such as the Caribbean, the Bahamas, Alaska, Europe, the Mediterranean and even Antarctica. Cruising offers a tremendous value, with trips that include your lodging, meals and entertainment – all rolled into one. Some luxury cruise lines even offer fully inclusive vacations, which cover drinks and tours ashore. And best of all, cruising means seeing the world conveniently after unpacking only once.

Cruises also provide a wonderful option for families, with many ships offering things like waterslides, mini-golf courses and fun clubs for kids, tweens and teens. While most are free, nursery programs can cost extra. Planning is easy: Pick your destination and the right ship (and line) for your travel style. The cruise line makes it simple, offering packages to help you save on extras like alcohol, shore tours or even airfare.

Travelers say they choose to cruise because cruising often costs less per night when compared with land vacations at a hotel, where they'll have to book -- and pay for -- every extra.

What are Tips for Finding Cheap Cruises?

If you're a flexible traveler, you'll have a better chance of finding cheap cruises. Take a cruise that doesn't sail over the summer or holidays, when prices are highest. Book an inside cabin, or take your chances with a "guarantee cabin," ideal for passengers who aren't picky about their stateroom location but really want the lowest price available. Book cabins on lower decks, which often come with lower prices than those rooms on higher floors – that is staterooms over suites.

Cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line and Royal Caribbean International offer rates that might drop as low as $75 per person per night -- and sometimes even lower.

If you want a real bargain, consider a transatlantic or repositioning cruise. These cruises are one-way or open-jaw trips, that start in one port and finish at another. You can score a deal sailing from Florida to Europe, for example, or even from New York to Florida. Just be aware, you'll probably have to pay a bit more for airfare to return.

What are Tips to Finding Last-Minute Cruise Deals?

While being flexible date wise will always get you the best last-minute cruise deals, it's particularly helpful if you live near a cruise port and can quickly drive there. That way you'll probably be able to jump on those deals that might pop up just a week or two before the ship is scheduled to sail.

Or if you don't have flexibility with either departure dates or embarkation locations, be willing to compromise on exact destinations. This will allow you to find a wider range of last-minute deals traveling to locations in their off-season or so-called shoulder season.

Do plenty of research and know what your ideal cruise is and costs on average, so both are already on your radar. When you see it drop, pounce! (Many cruise lines update pricing several times per day, so preparation is crucial.)

Best cruises in 2024

There's truly a cruise style and ship for everyone, and that has never been more the case than in 2024, as vessels continue to come in an array of sizes – from riverboats and expedition vessels to the largest-ever mega ships. And it's not an exaggeration to say some are loaded with so many activities that you couldn't possibly enjoy them all in a single sailing.

Families will find plenty of options and activities onboard big ships, which have transformed cruising, making the vessels as exciting as the destinations themselves. The Caribbean is always a great option for families, offering lots of sunshine, great beaches and culture. Alaska, famous for its incredible vistas and abundant wildlife, is also a solid family cruise option. Consider cruise brands such as Carnival Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Norwegian Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises and even Celebrity Cruises and Holland America Line for a great multi-generational voyage.

Or on the smaller side, by comparison, river cruising remains a hot ticket item this year, with exciting routes that send eager guests down the Danube or Rhine rivers in Europe or to lesser-frequented locations, like the Mekong River in Cambodia or Vietnam, or soon the Magdalena River in Colombia. Popular river cruises embark in timeless cities like Amsterdam, Budapest and Lisbon. River cruise lines to consider encompass Viking, AmaWaterways, Avalon Waterways, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, Emerald Cruises, Tauck, Uniworld Boutique River Cruises and Riverside Luxury Cruises, as well as American Cruise Lines for a domestic alternative.

If you're an adventurer at heart, an expedition cruise might be best for you. These voyages, often onboard small ships (only a few hundred passengers tops), offer an intimate experience that brings passengers right up next to glaciers, whales, penguins and iguanas. Ships visit tiny spots all over the world – from pole to pole – including the Arctic, Alaska, Australia, Greenland, the Galapagos and, of course, Antarctica. Passengers will spend their time zodiacing, kayaking, hiking, biking and exploring with expert guides and knowledgeable naturalists. Expedition travelers love cruise lines such as Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic, UnCruise Adventures, Silversea, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions), Ponant and Quark Expeditions, as well as an ever-expanding list that now even extends to Seabourn and Viking.

But for the most decadent form of travel, luxury cruises offer all-inclusive experiences onboard small to median-sized ships (usually under a thousand passengers) with perks like butlers, high-end amenities and personalized, intuitive service, not to mention the finest dining at sea. Ships often feature luxury touches like marble and crystal decor, intimate spaces and beautiful spas. Because luxury ships tend to be on the smaller size, they can often reach off-the-beaten-path destinations bigger ships simply cannot access -- ports like St. Tropez or Guadeloupe. If you're looking for a luxury cruise, consider Crystal, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Silversea, Explora Journeys, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and upcoming Four Seasons Yachts.

You won't be bored on a party cruise.

The magic of a cruise vacation is created with culinary delights, exotic ports of call, comfortable accommodations, carefully curated spaces and, of course, parties. These onboard celebrations can take many forms: large dance parties and quiet lounges, family-friendly and adults-only, adrenaline-pumping and relaxing activities, elegant and come-as-you-are events, and entire ships transformed into themed cruises .

Prepare for fun times on the following ships hosting the best party cruises at sea.

Ripcord by iFly is billed as the only skydiving simulator at sea; North Star allows cruisers to snap stunning photos from the tallest viewing deck found on any cruise ship; Sky Pad provides a virtual reality experience while patrons jump on a bungee trampoline; and the Ultimate Abyss, named the tallest slide at sea, plunges 10 stories down.
  • Surprise events: Scattered throughout the ship are several surprise activities that pop up among the scheduled itinerary of events. Join a toga party; boogie at a disco brigade; dress for a masquerade party; or transport back in time at an '80s-inspired extravaganza.

Suri cruise rings in 18th birthday in nyc while tom on set in london, suri cruise milestone 18th bday in rainy nyc ... dad tom on london set.

Suri Cruise is celebrating adulthood -- let that sink in -- as she rings in her 18th birthday in NYC by taking a rainy day stroll with a friend.

Despite the dreary weather, Suri didn't let a little rain wash out her big day ... she happily chatted away with her pal while under the shelter of her pink umbrella.

Suri had a gift bag in hand during her walk around town, suggesting the celebrations were already underway. It remains to be seen if there will be any larger festivities later -- she leads a pretty low-key lifestyle -- but ya gotta figure her mom Katie Holmes has something planned for such a big birthday.

As for Suri's dad, Tom Cruise , he most certainly won't be joining in on the birthday fun for a couple reasons.

First of all, Tom's across the pond from Suri right now -- he's busy filming a new project in London.

But, more importantly, the father and daughter reportedly haven't had a close relationship since 2012.

In fact, the last time they were publicly seen together was at Disney World that summer. That's also the same year Katie filed for divorce from Tom, when Suri was just 6-years-old.

At this point, they've been estranged twice as long as they were together -- so, the Tom factor's probably NBD for her.

Suri's eligible to vote for the first time. They really do grow up so fast!!!

It’s a unique opportunity to see modern Russia in the context of its intriguing history, ably assisted by friendly and professional academics and tour guides. A Volga Dream Russian river tour promises to leave you with an unforgettable afterglow of fond memories.

cruises in london

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Here’s a look at the nuclear sub, other Russian warships that will visit Cuba next week

The Cuban armed forces announced Thursday that Russia will dock three naval vessels and one nuclear-powered submarine at the port in Havana next week.

U.S. intelligence officials assess that none of the vessels will be carrying nuclear weapons, and the Biden administration is dismissing the Russian movements as a messaging ploy in response to U.S. assistance to Ukraine. But the deployment is expected to be part of a larger Russian military exercise in the Caribbean over the coming weeks, involving both warships and aircraft, that could be the most significant Russian activity in the region in at least five years.

What ships will Russia deploy to Cuba?

The main warship in the Russian deployment is the Admiral Gorshkov, a state-of-the-art frigate that is the lead ship in a new class of six combat vessels Moscow has commissioned through 2025.

Gorshkov-class ships can serve multiple roles for the Russian Navy, capable of performing anything from long-range attacks to escort missions or anti-submarine warfare — duties often reserved for destroyer-class ships. They are equipped with Russia’s most advanced weapons and sensor technology and can each carry a single attack helicopter on board.

Just last month, a video shared on social media by the Russian Armed Forces showed a NATO reconnaissance aircraft in the crosshairs of Gorshkov’s crew in the North Atlantic.

The second Russian ship in the deployment is the Nikolay Chiker, a tug point and icebreaker that last year was tracked by British authorities while stalking critical oil and gas pipelines near the Scottish coastal region of Shetland.

The second ship, the Pashin, is an oil tanker that is part of the Russian Navy’s Arctic fleet.

What kind of submarine is involved?

Cuban authorities said that Moscow is also sending the Kazan, a Yasen-class nuclear-powered submarine, to Havana as part of the deployment.

The Kazan is said to be a state-of-the-art submarine, part of a new class of vessels intended to replace Russia’s aging Soviet-era nuclear submarines, that are capable of carrying and firing nuclear cruise missiles. On a routine basis, they are presumed to be carrying land-attack cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles, anti-submarine missiles, with a crew of up to 85 sailors.

In April, Russian-state media said the Kazan conducted a live-fire exercise, firing a conventional cruise missile at a coastal target in the Barents Sea.

Paranoid Putin ‘starts wearing bulletproof vests for public appearances’

Vladimir Putin could be wearing bulletproof vests for public appearances amid fears he might be assassinated.

The Russian dictator appeared to be discomforted by the supposed body armour while he walked with ex-defence minister Sergei Shoigu, on Red Square, on May 9, for the annual Victory Day military parade commemorating the defeat of Hitler.

A source close to the Kremlin and two Russian officials said the country’s special services ‘have ramped up the already strict security measures surrounding President Vladimir Putin to an unprecedented degree’.

Recent attacks on politicians in Europe and Asia has left the Kremlin ‘rattled’ and it is on ‘high alert’ following the invasion of Ukraine .

Multiple security operatives were seen at the parade when Putin laid some wreaths.

Portable body armour in the form of suitcases can also be seen being carried around close to Putin.

Jade Miller, a security consultant, said: ‘Putin appears to be walking in a rather rigid manner and there are no natural creases appearing at the back of his overcoat when walking and shaking military personnel hands.’

She added his body frame ‘looks unnatural and his shoulders appear rather wide & square, showing no shape of the back and shoulder blades.

Vladimir Putin walking with ex-defence minister Sergei Shoigu at the May 9 Victory Parade on Red Square in Moscow.

‘At one point a part of his overcoat appears to get caught under what could potentially be a ballistic vest.’

She concluded Putin ‘appears to lift and adjust his shoulders in a way that shows discomfort from how a ballistic vest is designed to sit on the shoulders or collarbone.

‘In my professional opinion, Putin is wearing some form of ballistic protection during his time attending the parade.’

The Russian source said: ‘The Kremlin takes Vladimir Putin’s security very seriously.

‘He is protected by a whole army of visible and invisible guards.’

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko take part in a flower-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier on Victory Day, which marks the 79th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two, in central Moscow, Russia, May 9, 2024

The source goes on to say that Putin has been wearing body armour at outdoor events ‘since at least 2023’.

‘He has been doing so on the strong recommendation of the Presidential Security Service (SBP), a unit within the Federal Guard Service (FSO) that protects the president,’ the source said.

Putin recently looked unwell and weak while in Belarus amid ongoing rumours of bad health.

He seemed frail and off-colour while meeting with his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko to discuss the ongoing war in  Ukraine .

The summit took place in Minsk, the Belarusian capital, on Friday.

'Exodus' of Russian Ships From Black Sea Fleet's Reserve Base Sparks Rumors

N ew imagery appears to show vessels with Russia's Black Sea Fleet have left the country's Novorossiysk base, after Moscow relocated its ships further east in the Black Sea to shield its fleet from persistent Ukrainian attacks.

The imagery, dated June 5, indicates a possible "exodus" of Black Sea Fleet vessels from the base in Russia's southern Krasnodar region, an open-source intelligence account posted to social media.

Newsweek could not independently verify the imagery, and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry for comment via email.

Ukraine's navy said early on Thursday that four Russian ships were in the Black Sea, including a Kalibr-cruise missile carrier, as of 7 a.m. local time.

Russia had used the occupied Crimean city of Sevastopol as its primary Black Sea base, but consistent Ukrainian missile and drone strikes—and substantial Russian naval losses—forced Moscow to relocate many of its assets further east in the Black Sea, including to its Novorossiysk base.

Western intelligence has evaluated that Russia has restricted its activity in the northwestern Black Sea, where Ukraine can more easily threaten its fleet. Kyiv's targeting of Sevastopol has made Novorossiysk a "crucial" port for harboring the Black Sea Fleet's "most valuable assets," the British Defense Ministry said earlier this year.

"Essentially, we have confined the Russian fleet to the Novorossiysk bay," Vasyl Maliuk, the head of Ukraine's SBU security service, said in late May. Reports have also suggested the Kremlin is planning a new military base at the port of Ochamchire in Abkhazia , a breakaway region of Georgia. This would put Russian assets even further from Ukraine's coastline.

Although Ukraine can more easily target the Crimean base of Sevastopol, Kyiv has also looked to threaten the fleet in Novorossiysk. In mid-May, Ukraine launched drone attacks on military facilities in Novorossiysk and an oil refinery along the Black Sea coastline.

In late March, the British Defense Ministry said Moscow had started using four barges to guard the entrance to Novorossiysk, designed to strengthen the port's defenses against Ukrainian naval drones. Satellite imagery published by London earlier this year indicated that Russia had painted decoy silhouettes of at least one Kilo -class submarine at Novorossiysk, likely designed to confuse Ukrainian drone operators.

Russia's former defense minister, Sergei Shoigu , previously announced that Moscow would beef up the protection around its Black Sea fleet, adding large-caliber machine guns to shoot at incoming drones before they can hit Russian vessels.

Taylor Swift and Cara Delevinge hugging

Sweater weather is a state of mind.

Taylor Swift returned to one of her longtime favorite labels to catch Cara Delevingne’s penultimate performance in “Cabaret” in London last Friday, wearing a sky blue Stella McCartney sweater ($1,690) with a fringed hem.

Trading her bedazzled Eras Tour costumes for something cozier, the Grammy winner pulled her pal in for a hug backstage after the show, as seen in a snap Delevingne shared on Instagram Thursday spotlighting some special moments from her several-month-long run as Sally Bowles.

It makes perfect sense that Swift would opt for Stella for this particular outing; the vegan brand’s been a go-to of hers since her 2019, when the pair collaborated on a collection inspired by Swift’s “Lover” album. (One of the tracks, “London Boy,” even includes a shout-out to the British designer.)

In addition to incorporating McCartney’s sustainable styles into many of her street style looks since then, the “Cruel Summer” singer also posed in one of Stella’s plaid coats for the cover of her woodsy “Evermore” album in 2020.

“Stella is so creative,” Swift  told fans during a YouTube Q&A  ahead of her music video premiere for “Willow,” the album’s lead single.

“I told her I had a secret project and she designed clothes that were EXACTLY what I imagined. I drove to her office, picked them up and took them into the woods!!”

Taylor Swift is seen on October 26, 2023 in New York City.

Clearly, the appreciation is mutual; “Knowing someone well makes creating something for them easier. With Taylor, everything happened so naturally; the pieces I made reflected the effortless emotionality of her album,” McCartney wrote on Instagram at the time.

“Complementing a friend’s creation is rare and precious and feels incredibly special.”

Delevingne’s long been close with McCartney as well, having walked in her runway shows, attended multiple Met Galas in her designs and, most recently, starred as the face of her brand’s summer 2024 campaign.
